Allyson Lyons & Conner Boynton October 1, 2011 Photography by Jim Goodwin Photography

Allyson Lyons & Conner Boynton 10.1.11 Love Story: We met in college at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. After 8 months of long distance dating we decided one of us had to move because we couldn’t stand being apart anymore. I found a job near his hometown of Hendersonville, TN and moved. We were absolutely inseparable from the moment I moved and a few months later he took me ring shopping and we picked my engagement ring out together. Since I knew a proposal was coming he had to be creative in order to surprise me. I am a speech language teacher in a school system and he showed up at my school one day and got the secretaries in on his plan. One of them came to my room and asked me to come meet a new child that I would be getting in speech. She told me he was in the conference room so as I opened the door to the conference room there was Conner down on one knee holding a rose with the ring in the middle of it. It was absolutely perfect and I was beyond shocked! THE BIG DAY: Conner and I were engaged for 6 months. From the moment we got engaged my parents and I started planning. Believe it or not my dad was the true wedding planner. He is very organized and took on this huge project. I can’t imagine the planning process without him. He was incredible. I can truly say everything worked out exactly how I wanted it to. My colors were bright red and white. I just wanted red everywhere and it was. The wedding and reception were beautiful and everything I had imagined. In the beginning we did have a few little hiccups. For starters my mother-in-law couldn’t get her dress zipped up all the way, the zipper had gotten stuck on some fabric, so we had to send the wedding coordinator out to get safety pins and she pinned it up for her. Then about 15 minutes before the wedding started my mom stepped on something and broke the tip of the heel off her shoe. She called my dad and he brought her some super glue. He opened the super glue while he was holding onto the steering wheel and some of it oozed out and his hand was super glued to the steering wheel! Luckily my mom found some baby wipes and wiped his hand until it came free. I didn’t learn about this huge fiasco until right before we walked down the aisle so needless to say there was a lot of laughing going on. During the ceremony as we were saying our vows my now husband was playing with my ring on my finger and wasn’t paying attention to the priest so it took the priest three times of says the vows before Conner finally repeated him. All of these little mishaps just made the day more exciting and fun!

HeyGrooms

Don’t Say This During Wedding Planning! “Sounds good, whatever you think.”

If it only mattered what your bride thought, than she wouldn’t take the time to ask you for an opinion. Contrary to popular culture, most brides desperately want their groom more involved with the wedding planning. While there will be some aspects that you have less of any opinion than others, it is important to not fall mute for majority of the major decisions. After all, a wedding is the first step in your new life together and I’m betting you want to have a say in that.

“How much?!”

Constant criticism of how much is being spent really takes the fun out of planning a wedding for all parties involved, particularly your bride. Instead, map out a budget that you can both agree on for the wedding so you both have a clear understanding of how much money is being spent where. With financial woos the number one precursor for divorce; start off on the right foot.

“I’m really whipped... I just want to chill. Can all this planning stuff wait?”

Let me clarify... grooms get a hall-pass on this statement a couple times. By the third, fourth, every time we ask for help and you responsed with another excuse to postpone, our patience is wearing thin. Brides see a mountain of work ahead of them when it comes to all the details of a wedding. From decor to family drama to slimming down for our dream dress, we see our own sacrifice everywhere and need you to pitch in. After all, the wedding is for the both of us.

“Didn’t I mention that? I must have forgot.”

It is important that both bride and groom are kept in each other’s loop regarding the wedding, guest’s travel plans and Mom’s sudden one-eighty considering her help with the rehearsal dinner. A wedding can be a logistical nightmare and “forgetting” to mention vital details can derail a timeline and add a lot of undue stress to your bride. When you have new wedding information, make a point to share this with your fiancé, pronto. I’m betting there’s an app for that...

“This really doesn’t matter to me. I don’t want to help.”

Agreed, tying ribbons around hundreds of wedding programs or filling custom seed packets for favors may not be your cup of tea. But your bride is excited and loves the details that make your day personal and heartfelt, including those that are somewhat time-consuming. And when you love a person you do things that are not important to you because they matter to the person who matters most to you.

Danielle Erickson & Daniel Thornburg May 21, 2011

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Cable Photography

Danielle Erickson & Daniel Thornburg 05.21.11 Love Story: I originally met Dan through a good friend mine, Anna. She and her husband have been life long friends with Dan and they had invited me to their house to watch movies. Daniel happened to be there, and we started dating a few days after. Daniel proposed to me on Christmas morning. I like to see how many presents are under the tree, and who they are addressed to. But I could not find one addressed to me. However, after giving Dan all of his presents he told me to close my eyes. I could hear him digging in the tree and chuckled to myself as I couldn’t figure out what would be so small to hide in the tree. He had wrapped the ring, and I honestly thought it was going to be a necklace at first. When I opened the box I started crying, and couldn’t talk for quite a while. Dan says I scared him, he thought I was crying because I was going to say no. When we told my mother she screamed so loud her dog yelped. The Details: Our wedding was Victorian themed. We chose New Canton Plantation because of the antiques as well as the century the plantation was built in. In order to make our wedding even more Victorian cameos were incorporated into just about everything we could think of. My bouquet had a cameo tied to it; I still wear this as a necklace. The cake had gum paste cameos on each tier. At the greeting table we had a few cameos near the programs. We had party favors made out of dark and white chocolate. These were small boxes filled with candies, but the top of the box featured a cameo design. Our center pieces, clear cylinder vases with a submerged rose and floating candle on top, had small cameos and other gold and crystal trinkets in the bottom. My Mother and I designed the center pieces, and Copper Creek helped finish off the concept by providing a means for keeping the roses submerged. They kept floating. The colors we chose were deep burgundy red and black, with a small amount of gold. Charles, from Copper Creek, suggested that the flowers have purple mixed in, as well as small amount of pink. Personally I dislike pink, however the mix of the Black Magic roses, with purple and a dusty rose colored flower was beautiful! I would have never thought of mixing those colors, but it was perfect. Wedding Advice: My advice to anyone who is planning a wedding is to give yourself enough time. You can’t plan your dream wedding, and have it turn out perfect, in a month. You can’t even plan it in six months! Really, you do need a year.

Natalie Champion & Ryan Doyle August 20, 2011 Photography by Jim Goodwin Photography

The Big Day: It’s hard to remember the big day! It was all such a blur. I woke up and had breakfast at Cracker Barrel with all of my bridesmaids and their guests. It was great to have a relaxing meal before all the commotion started. It was one appointment after another and no time in between. Probably the funniest thing that happened was when Ryan and I were arriving to the ceremony site at the same time. We didn’t want to see each other before the wedding so I had my maid of honor call him and ask where he was. He might have been 5 cars behind us! He and his best man waited at the gas station until we could get inside the place where we were getting ready! I don’t really remember crying, maybe I shed a tear or two but I knew if I started to cry, I couldn’t stop! Things were always so happy that day only tears of joy could be shed. I remember getting close to crying after the ceremony when I was telling my mom thanks for allowing me to have the fairytale wedding that I had always dreamed of. Our wedding colors were pink and green. Even though those are my two favorite colors we did pink for me and green for Ryan. They looked beautiful together. We used a vibrant pink and a light lime green to make the colors coordinate and “pop” together. The big detail of our wedding was mainly our floral arrangements. They truly brought out our colors and added a few more. Absolutely beautiful work done by Two Buds and a Blossom. wedding Budget: I was never given a budget from my parent’s but from the beginning I knew I wanted to keep our wedding “budget friendly”. I tried to keep costs at their lowest even though we did splurge on a few things. Mom felt the most comfortable with Main Street Catering since they have high recommendations and their food was made right across the street from our ceremony site. Not much could really happen in that short of a distance! My friends from high school did our floral arrangements and I knew I couldn’t go with anyone else. Our photographer was wonderful and we really hit it off from the beginning. Once you find the people that you feel comfortable enough to be a part of your wedding day, sometimes it’s worth the splurge!

Kateland Sykes & Adam Owens August 20, 2011

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Reflective Moments Photography

Kateland Sykes & Adam Owens 08.20.11 Love Story: Ironically, Adam and I met in the last place I ever thought I would find my soul mate, Stateline Bar & Grill. We were both out with friends, sharing a night of dancing and relaxation when we locked eyes. As cheesy as it sounds, I knew from that moment that he was special. Interestingly enough, we lived only 10 minutes from each other at the time and had no idea that the other even existed. Within a couple of minutes of sparking up a conversation at the bar, Adam was able to make me laugh and left me with a permagrin on my face for the entire night. He is able to read my thoughts without me saying a single word. He finishes my sentences and even now, 3 years later, still makes my heart skip a beat. When cuddling, we fit perfectly together like two puzzle pieces made for one another. And finally, he is the only human being that can touch my feet without provoking a near panic attack. That is true love. Being the romantic that he is, Adam’s proposal was thoughtful, sweet, and unique. He sent me on a scavenger hunt to a few of the places that played a part in making our relationship exciting and memorable. Along the way, he left random scrabble pieces that, in the end, spelled out “Will you marry me?” in French, my second language. I found him kneeling in our home, surrounded by a sea of red rose petals, with ring in hand. It was truly a flawless moment. Wedding Details: The theme of our wedding was “Peacock” and every aspect of our big day pulled from a single feather. Our colors were purple, royal blue, jade, lime green, gold, and black. My bouquet was a fan of peacock feathers with a base of deep purple hydrangeas. Our favors were fans with an attached poem: Emily Dickenson’s “Hope Is the Thing with Feathers”. Birdcages were used throughout the venue. Allandale’s Heron Dome served as the perfect backdrop for our ceremony given that the centerpiece of the dome is a pair of birds. It was important for my wedding to be simple and affordable, yet elegant. Therefore, I spent a lot of time with the help of one of my dear friends DIY-ing many of the decorations. We put together the favors for guests with personal touches, created our own centerpieces with Moroccan-style blue lanterns and feathers, made pomanders for the aisle from scratch, as well as a number of other special touches. Not only did these craft projects allow the bridesmaids to spend some quality time together, but also added a certain unique spark to the motif. Given that we aren’t your ordinary couple, rather than reciting traditional vows, Adam and I chose poems to reflect our feelings for one another. Ultimately, our attempts to thwart crying failed miserably and we both choked up. For our grand finale, we joined our wedding party in dancing out to Chris Brown’s “Yeah x3”. It definitely caught our guests by surprise, earned more than a few giggles, and set the tone for the rest of the evening. PARTY!

Lori Smith & Derek Hess June 23, 2012

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Cable Photography

Lori Smith & Derek Hess 06.23.12 The Proposal: We met over 3 years ago when we were both students at East Tennessee State University while taking a bowling class. I was a sophomore and he was a senior. Derek and I didn’t talk for the first 2 months of class and, during that time, I just assumed that he didn’t notice me because he talked to everyone else in our class except me. Looking back on it now, I wouldn’t change a thing because he was definitely worth the wait. Once Derek finally got up the nerve to come and talk to me, we clicked immediately. We fell in love and soon realized that we both wanted to get married someday, when we were ready, and especially when we both graduated with our degrees. The night that Derek popped the question was on Wednesday January 5th, 2011. For me, that night was just another ordinary night that we had planned to go out to eat at Stir Fry in Johnson City, TN for half-price sushi, pick up a movie, and relax back at my apartment like we had previously done so many times before. While we were gone, Derek’s two sisters came over to my apartment to decorate and left before we came home. When I opened the door to my apartment, there were candles and rose petals all over my living room along with a dozen roses and daisies (my favorite) and pictures of us all around the room. I was completely surprised! I turned around and there he was on one knee. I couldn’t believe what was happening because I was so overwhelmed with emotion and excitement. Before he could get out the words to ask me to marry him I was already saying “Yes!” Two camcorders were set up to record the night, so we have it all on DVD to remember that night forever. It could not have been anymore perfect. We believe that we’re a perfect match because, when we’re together, we’re always having fun. We both love to play games and try new things. Whether we’re enjoying a night out to dinner and a movie or simply curled up on the couch, we’re always enjoying each other’s company. Our life goals and beliefs interconnect in a way that it makes our relationship effortless. We ultimately bring out the best in each other. We both believe that things happen for a reason and know that the two of us meeting was no accident and thank God everyday for bring us into each-other’s lives. We really wanted to capture all of these characteristics of our relationship in our engagement pictures. Our photos were taken at Holiday Lanes Bowling Alley in the same five lanes that we used to play when we met. Others were taken at ETSU, where we both graduated. Lastly, we wanted a picnic scene of us feeding the ducks and playing cards as we often love to do together.?: ????????. Planning: We will have been engaged for 1 year and 5 months when we get married this June. We chose our date because it gave us plenty of time to plan the wedding and because I will be graduating in May, two months before the wedding. One of the most important aspects of our wedding is that we want our families to be able to relax and enjoy our wedding as much as possible. We are doing this by planning early and thoroughly, and hiring vendors so that none of them have to work or stress to get things done. We didn’t really begin with a budget but always planned to keep it as inexpensive at all. With this, we did decide that we wanted to have all that we imagined for our wedding day and would do what it took to make it happen. We hope to have around 150 people at our wedding.

Kara Woolsey & Gavin Lankford Photography by Jim Goodwin Photography

The Engagement Story: It all started with a voicemail. He told me he had lost his phone. NO surprise; that’s a weekly thing! He had (supposedly) been riding horses on my parents’ farm, so we just decided to look for it after the hometown football game. After the game, we headed to my house with me in the passenger seat yellling, “slow down! This isn’t Nascar!” Once there, we started up the four-wheeler and repeatedly called his phone, straining to see its light. Finally, we spotted it. He stopped the four-wheeler and grabbed my hand, dragging me to where his phone sat on the ground. As he reached down to pick it up, he flipped a switch. There it was: our swing lit up with a MILLION Christmas lights; and that’s when I knew. He bent down again and turned on the song that he had told me all along was reserved for “when this thing is serious business”. He had thought of everything: a dozen roses and tons of petals, mason jars and sparkling grape juice, and… the ring tied to the fishing pole he got me. I literally fell into his arms a happy, babbling mess; poor guy had to force me to stand up just so he could hit a knee! He said something so perfect (that neither of us really remember) and asked the question of a lifetime. With my right hand still covering my mouth, I waved my left hand impatiently in front of his face as if to say “put it on already!”. Drenched in tears and happiness, we embraced each other and the change in status: engaged to be married. Wedding Vision: Our wedding will be a CELEBRATION! Of family, of friends, and of love. We will be married in a huge open field on my parents’ farm, under the shade of oak trees and looking towards the most beautiful mountain range. It will be a casual, laidback affair, full of fun and fellowship, love and laughter, and of course, food and dancing! Nothing could fit us better. And the best part is… at the end of the day I’ll be married to my greatest friend and confidant. The Two of You: I (Kara) will be graduating from CarsonNewman College in May and (hopefully!) off to medical school in the fall, so we are sort of in a limbo state until we figure out where we’ll be heading next! Spontaneity is a good thing, right? Gav gave me a gorgeous horse (whom I completely adore), so we love to ride together. There’s nothing more relaxing. We both just love the outdoors: fishing, hiking, hunting (just kidding… that last one is just him). We love sports, but we both can get competitive so we have to be careful. ☺ We are both very serious about our faith, so that’s another big part of our relationship. Ultimately, time together is time well spent. why did you choose your Photographer?: Who WOULDN’T choose Jim Goodwin photography after meeting those two?! Krisna was the only photographer I met with (and trust me, I met with A LOT) who convinced me that my day was just that: MY day. She had the BEST attitude, instantly convincing me that they could make my vision come to life. I knew that they would positively deliver everything that I could ever imagine and more. They are so willing, going way above and beyond what is expected of them, and so genuine, I knew I wouldn’t be able to find better. And I was absolutely correct. Thanks for your overall amazing-ness, Jim & Krisna!

to Make the Most

WAYS

of Bridal Shows

Your engaged and now it is time to start planning… With so many things to see and vendors to talk to, wedding shows can be overwhelming and feel a bit like, well the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Savvy brides see through the chaos and make the most of what bridal shows have to offer by way of inspiration, advice and vendor giveaways. With these 7 tips, you can too!

•1•

Come Prepared. The boy scouts were on to something here… Make sure you have the essentials. Have a pen to take notes and sign up for all the wedding day give-aways. Better yet, pre-print mailing labels with your name, phone number, email and wedding date to save a ton of time. Also, remember to bring your camera to capture all the wedding inspiration on display… vendors are putting their best decorating foot forward and you will want to remember everything you saw.

•2•

Don’t eat (a lot!) before you come. Weddings have food and so do wedding shows. Caterers and bakers use this opportunity to showcase great samples of their food so hold off on lunch & come hungry!

•3•

Leave the little ones at home. Children have small attention spans and even with all the cake samples, will quickly lose interest becoming dead weight. It is distracting to have fussy or bored children (or adults!) in your party while you are walking the show floor and trying to talk with vendors. Think carefully about who will join you on wedding show day.

•4•

Do your homework. It’s worthwhile to familiarize yourself with the services you are still seeking, what questions to ask and who is exhibiting at the show. This helps to maximize the time you have at each booth which can sometimes be limited with busy shows and popular vendors. Having other details such as your wedding date or budget mapped out, are also helpful… you don’t want to fall in love with a vendor only to find out, that they are booked on your wedding date or out of your price range.

•5•

Come ready to make a deal. Many of the vendors will offer show-only discounts and specials for brides ready to book. If you have done your research and have your checkbook in hand, the savings will add up fast. Keep in mind that vendors are not as busy during the fashion show so if you have your dress, use this time to talk one-on-one.

•6•

These boots are made for comfort. Remember the show floor is big with lots of walking so leave the heels for later that night and wear comfy shoes!

•7•

FREE tickets! Many local vendors are given free show tickets to hand out to perspective brides that they would like to personally invite to the show. If you plan to set up meetings with vendors before the show, make sure to ask if they will have a booth and you just may get free tickets.

Lisa Herman & Miguel King June 18, 2011

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Cable Photography

Lisa Herman & Miguel King 06.18.11 Big Day: Lisa and I had written out our ceremony together from everything to the music, vows, exchanging to rings and prayers, which made the ceremony so much more purposeful and meaningful to both of us. I remember waiting in front of the alter listening to the musicians play “Your Love is Strong” by Jon Foreman and being so excited, but at peace knowing that I would see my beautiful bride soon. Then, the bridal recession began and at the crescendo of the song, my bride and her father walked through the doors. She was ravishing; simply stunning. She told me that she had some doubts about her Maggie Sottero dress, but it was evident that Lisa made the dress look beautiful and not vice versa. I did everything I could not to break down and cry uncontrollable. All the waiting and the practicing of patience for this day had finally come.

As we kissed, the song, “Tonight” by Pitbull featuring Ne-yo came on and we along with the entire bridal party put on sunglasses and proceeded to dance a choreographed dance out the church! The church was filled with clapping, shouts, and of course laugher! To this day, several of our friends and family have stating that our ceremony was one of the best ceremonies that they had attended. Wedding Details: Our theme was more of an outdoors, rustic, theme. Our reception was at an outdoor pavilion on a farm. Our centerpieces consisted of wood slabs, lanterns, candles, moss, and rocks from a near by river. Our wedding party colors were a light silver and lilac. The girls were in the silver dresses and the guys had on lilac shirts. However, the reception theme colors were brown, green, and a creamy white. We did A LOT of DIY projects. We bought an invitation kit and printed and put together all the invitations. We cut down a tree for the wood slab centerpieces and collected rocks from a river. I also strung photos of all the guests with Mig and I around the reception area. I spray painted clothespins brown and used them to hang the photos cross some twine. We also had a friend take photos of us for our “save the date”. She unloaded it and type on the photo. We printed them in black and white and addressed them. A neat detail was that every table had two bottles of wine – a white and a red. Each bottle was from a different country around the world. We created the postcards on Vista Print and put a love quote or bible verse that related to love on it along with a cute picture of two owls in love! We asked guests to write us a postcard instead of signing a guestbook. We did not find much purpose in a guestbook with a bunch of signatures; however, we did find purpose in receiving postcards all year long! We asked guests to write advice, a funny story they remember of Mig and I or a personally message to us. We had a basket for the basket for guests to “drop” their postcards and then the maid-of-honor sent us one a week!

Natisha Sturgill & Cody Mabe July 17, 2010 Catering by Main Street Cafe and Catering

The BiG Day: The big day was on July 17, 2010 at the Oaks Castle in Johnson City, TN. I was so nervous because I wanted everything perfect. The weather first of all wasn’t cooperating that morning as there were stormy clouds in the vicinity. All I kept praying and wishing for was a beautiful ceremony and for it to stay dry. Starting at 10 am that morning, I got a knock on the room door that we were all getting ready in. As someone looked through the peephole, they told me to get in another room...It was Cody delivering a note, a rose in a glass vase with water and seashells in it, and dove chocolate. With each approaching hour, I kept receiving more notes, roses, a dozen roses, and dove chocolate. Every note had so much thought in meaning to it. All of this continued until right before 6pm, before the wedding began. As I got into my wedding dress, it was every emotion I had hoped for. I didn’t want to take it off when I decided it was the one, and I couldn’t wait for Cody to see me in it. As I was anxiously awaiting for the song to play that signaled my walk to my dad and then the walk to Cody, I thought I was going to throw up. Not because I was nervous, dreading it, or unhappy, but because I was marrying the man of my dreams, I hadn’t seen him since the night before, and I couldn’t believe it was actually taking place. I’ll never forget the moment as I seen my dad’s face... He was so happy for me, but choked up. He told me “ Tisha, you look gorgeous”. I was so happy to be walking down the aisle by him. As tears welled up, and the song “I love you” by Crawford Crossing played, the look on Cody’s face when he seen me will be one that I will never forget. I had never seen him drop a tear, and sure as ever he did when he seen me. Of course this made me start to cry, and I was ever so happy to finally see him! During the ceremony, Cody had written me another song that I had yet to hear which he played. It was called “Nothing Like You” and was yet another beautiful piece. I mean how many girls have a husband or man that is able to sing to them and play the guitar at their very own wedding? ME! :) I am so blessed!! Wedding Details: My vision was to have a fairytale wedding, hence having it at the Oaks Castle. I wanted it to be in the evening, with rose petals already placed down the aisle with a heart made out of rose petals where Cody & I stood, kissing balls hung above where we stood, etc. My colors were beige, taupe, champagne, cream, and white. My reception was outside underneath a tent outside the castle, with lights inside and a dance floor. I had always imagined that and it was perfect! We had white roses, hydrangeas, taupe bridesmaid dresses, tan tuxes, white chair, etc. Our cake was one of a kind with a champagne color, square 5 tiers, with edible pearls and rhinestones placed all over it.

Chelsea Lane & Austin Albright July 16, 2011 Photography by Kadee’s Approach Photography

Love Story: Austin and I have known each other since middle school, but we started dating our junior year of high school. We have become best friends over the years. I could not ask for a more wonderful person. He is extremely sweet, loving, playful, silly, determined, thoughtful, caring.... I could not ask for anything more! We were engaged in December of 2010 and were married July 16,2011. So it was a short engagement. My stepmother was very helpful! She was constantly “google-ing” ideas! I definitely could not have done it with out her! The most important thing in my wedding was definitely my husband! The Big Day: It couldn’t have been a better! I was worried with it being a July wedding that it would be miserably hot, but it had been cloudy all day until right before the ceremony the sun peaked out! They day went perfectly! Austin made goofy faces all day that made me laugh! I loved that we had mini cupcakes! My colors were red and baby blue. I wanted everything to be simple and elegant! Banq was the perfect place for that! It was already a beautiful building that it didn’t take much to decorate it! Advice: The best advice I could give is to “breathe!” Do not stress out over the little details! It will all come together beautifully! Have fun planning your wedding. When you feel stressed take a break! Plan ahead so small things are done before your big day! As long as you have your groom and close family and friends nothing can ruin your day! Marriage life has been great so far! We have become even better friends!

Lindsey Davis & Isaac Sproles September 10, 2011

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Reflective Moments Photopraphy

Lindsey Davis & Isaac Sproles 09.10.11 Love Story: Isaac and Lindsey met in middle school. They were always great friends who’s paths kept meeting. After years of being friends, the pieces fell into place and they started dating seriously. A few days after their third date, Lindsey told her mother that she could marry Isaac and be happy for the rest of her life. And that’s exactly what they did. Before Isaac left for a trip over seas they made it official. It was just the two of them, no distractions or overwhelming feelings of anxiety. Being married was the most amazing feeling. However, it was not everything Lindsey had dreamed; So they decided that when Isaac came back they would celebrate by having a ceremony with all of their family and friends. The Big Day: The planning process took about a year. Isaac and Lindsey totally agree that they owe everything to their amazing planners and Sharon (Lindsey’s mother). With out their expertise and desire to make the day perfect, it simply wouldn’t have been. To them the most important thing was that they shared the beautiful day together. The day was chaotic and stressful. Everyone was rushed and on their toes trying to make sure things went right. People were running late but the amazing team of planners and vendors they had really eased their minds. They both agreed that the best part of their day was seeing each other before the ceremony. It calmed the nerves of the day! Everything about that day was everything and more that Lindsey had dreamed! Being surrounded by family and friends that loved them was more than enough. However, it was like the cherry on top to walk into the Martha Washington and be blown away by every detail from the cake to the flowers. Marriage Advice: Advice for wedding planning would have to be, don’t stress and don’t be afraid to ask for help. The happy couple should not do everything. Even if you don’t plan to have a team of planners, ask family and friends to pitch in where help is needed.

BRIDAL MYTHS

Debunked!

Is wedding advice coming at you from every angle? Determine what’s fact and what’s fiction by debunking these common wedding myths.

1

IT’S NOT REALLY A WEDDING IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW TRADITION. The first person to buck tradition and wear white was Queen Victoria (that’s right...brides have not always worn white). This is now taken for granted as standard attire as is a wedding cake, first dance, bouquet toss and something blue. A wedding simply requires an officiant, license and witness. The celebration of said wedding should be an expression of the couple’s personalities and sometimes breaking the rules leads to new traditions that are a better fit than those of past generations.

4

The Bride’s parents pay for wedding and reception, groom’s parents pay for rehearsal dinner. Wouldn’t it be nice if Mom and Dad still footed the bill but not so with modern weddings. This myth goes out the window as at least a third of wedding costs are now covered by the couple themselves. Families today are pooling their resources and then together, determining how funds are spent for all related events.

2

Thank you notes can be sent by email.

3

THE BRIDE CAN ONLY BE GIVEN AWAY BY HER FATHER.

While email is the preferred way of communication for many a message, it is generally frowned upon when thanking your wedding guests. Hand written thank-you notes are far from out-dated and though tedious to a generation of texters, it must be done. Appreciate this dying art and take the time to communicate as your grandparents. Years later, a friend will dig out your hand written note, carefully saved. Not your email.

This myth dates back to the days of old, when daughters were literal property of their fathers and a wedding was merely a business deal for Dad to expand his fortunes through the sale of his daughter. While the tradition still sticks to this day, I doubt very much that modern brides would describe themselves as part of dad’s estate. Your aisle escort should be a person that played a significant and supportive role in your path to find true love.

5

WEDDING LUCK (AND MARRIAGE) DEPENDS ON A SIXPENCE, SPIDERS AND SUPERSTITIONS. Here’s the thing about luck... it all depends on the belief that wearing a certain color, carrying a token or changing your behavior will shift future events to their preferred outcome. Luck is mostly used as a way to counter those things completely out of our control and has often been a way of explaining the unexplained. If only making it through the first year of marriage was as easy as saving the top tier of your cake. Make your own luck with careful planning, professional vendors and a positive attitude.

6

Vendors will always give a discount if you ask.

7

If you can’t foot the bar bill, offer a cash bar.

Wedding vendors are not Mexican bazaars where you haggle the best possible deal. While a vendor may run a promotion, expecting to get a discount because you’re a bride is like expecting your doctor to run a special because you’re a patient. This doesn’t make long-term business sense. Instead, plan to attend a local bridal show for show-only specials or giveaways and be honest about your budget and vision with wedding vendors. Professionals will work with brides to find creative ways to stretch your buck and meet their bottom line.

Cash bars are T-A-C-K-Y... as well as anything else on your wedding day that require your guests pony up cash. Remember these are the same dearly loved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding. During the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses. Tactful Solution… If you are set on offering liquor at your wedding but fear the cost, consider a limited bar with only wine and beer (better yet keg beer, often costing half as much per serving as bottled).

10

8

Brides on a budget save big with DIY Projects.

9

Wedding Day is the Bride’s Day.

With the vastness of today’s World Wide Web, the likelihood of finding a bargain can make DIY more costly than one thinks. This is even more apparent when your inner crafter is not well matched to make DIY magic (but Martha Stewart made it look so easy!). And remember time is money, even if it is your time. Be realistic about how much time will need to be dedicated to DIY projects, particularly in the last few weeks leading up to wedding day (when the to-do list is never ending and you’d rather be with your family). If the budget is stretched thin, it might make more sense to skip it all together.

While you and your groom are certainly the guests of honor, a bride with her sights set on making wedding day entirely about her is likely to be labeled a bridezilla. Weddings are as much about the happy couple and their new life together as it is a celebration for all the related family members. Instead find ways to celebrate your family or close friends and their traditions with your new love and the traditions in store for years to come. This ensures your guests feel part of a truly special event.

Your bridal party must have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Today’s bride has thrown out all the rules when it comes to bridal parties. With you closest friends and family by your side on wedding day, trying to stay in the box of specific numbers or even genders just doesn’t work. Nowadays, your maid of honor is now your man of honor, pooches are playing ring bearer and dancing to the altar is what makes wedding ceremonies personal, memorable and unique.

Jamie Williamson & Benjamin Coates November 12, 2011

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Cable Photography

Jamie Williamson & Benjamin Coates 11.12.11 Love Story: I’ve worked at Hair Benders Salon with my sister in law for about seven years. Bens’s sister had been a client of my sister in law for a few years or so, and when he and I both became single at the same time they decided to set us up. We got along great from the start and developed a great friendship even before the romance set in. He and I have alot of the same morals, religious views, work ethic, etc. We both just completely understand each other for who they are and don’t expect perfection, just love. He is by far the most amazing person I’ve ever met. We also share a love for alot of the same activities. On Sunday May 22, 2011, (which was a beautiful afternoon) we went trail running at Bays Mountain Park. We took the Fire Tower trail all the way to the top, and then began to head back down. Now, Ben is much more of an athlete than I am (especially with running) so he said he would like to go ahead at a little faster pace. I said of course and continued my little jog. There is a long curve on this trail and right at the bend there is a large tree, where Ben was hidden. When I came around this curve, I was SHOCKED to see Ben down on one knee with the ring out, and asked me to marry him. We both were crying and hugging of course and there was no one around during the entire event! It was beautiful, extremely personal and very sweet. Absolutely perfect.. The Details: We were officially engaged about 6 months. However, we had begun planning the wedding a few months before so that the major details were set before anyone wanted to persuade our “vision” of our wedding day. Pretty much throughout the entire process, we did everything on our own. With errand running (especially closer to the wedding) my mom helped in an enormous way! His mom and sister both contributed to many ideas and vendors like the baker, caterer, and florist. Bens father was also a tremendous help with the all of the parties and showers as well as helping to set things up with the caterers for the wedding! I didn’t hire a planner, but did hire a coordinator for the wedding day to oversee things so that family and friends could enjoy it. The most important thing to us about the wedding was each other. Neither of us care alot about all of the hype around the wedding so much as we cared about one another and MARRIAGE. Thats what it’s all about anyway!! Our vision was simple, yet elegant and very much the concept of less is more. Banq is absolutely beautiful all on its own so we just added our own personal touches here and there. Our colors were black and white, we had little flameless candles and calla lilies as our flowers. DIY projects were our thank you notes on the guests tables with our favors. Favors were little bags with hershey kissed, a tiny wedding bell with a poem, and cups that were monogrammed with a C and our names and wedding date. For our immediate family members, we put together a little bag of green M&M’s and a little personal note in memory of my father. His favorite candy was green* M&M’s.

Don't be that bride

Thank You Notes are a Must!

I bring you a gift and you write a thank-you note. Seemingly simple, modern brides are regularly falling prey to this etiquette blunder.

Thank You!

I remember my paternal grandmother forgetting my birthday one year. Waiting patiently for the signature shape of a Hallmark card, with neatly written check tucked inside to arrive, I remember waiting and thinking...was she just getting old and forgetful? I received piles of presents from friends, my parents and other grandparents acting quickly as a distraction to this oversight. I would find out later that the oversight was actually on purpose. Seeing that I had forgotten to write her a thank-you card the year before, she had forgotten to write me the check I expected. Lesson be learned young one. Years later, this lesson sticks with me and while I may be late with a thank you now and again, I always make it a point to call or write. Pleasantries are not to be overrated after all, particularly a thank you.

While, I would not describe myself as particularly sentimental throwing out magazines once read, rarely hanging onto ticket stubs and reveling in purges related to closet reorganization, I do have a secret. I have kept every thank you note, neatly stacked and held by a fraying rubber band, from the brides I worked with in my past life as a wedding planner. Every single one. Why? They make me feel good, great really. After all the blood, sweat and tears I dedicate to make a bride’s day flawless, receiving a sweet note in the penmanship of a new wife or husband, suddenly hard work is a distant memory buried in appreciative bliss. And apparently, I am not the only one that feels gratified to open their mailbox to find a handwritten note. Biggest etiquette complaint I hear repeatedly from wedding guests, family and bridal party member post wedding... I spent XXX amount of dollars on this person’s wedding as their bridesmaid, guest, etc and never received a thank you note. Nothing pisses people off more than not being appreciated. Nevertheless, our busy lives inevitably get in the way, particularly for a pair of newlyweds with honeymoons, post wedding planning exhaustion, the purchase of a new home (that needs paint and furniture and decorating) and even children. Repeated attempts to send out

a card are lost when we can’t seem to find so and so’s address or figure out what to write. Months have gone by and perhaps it’s too late...you set out with the best intentions and that’s what counts, right? No, dear reader... intention is not nearly enough in regards to your thank-you cards. However, my goal is not to lecture on the manners on the day but rather offer insight and solutions. First step - organization is key. This seems like common sense but I can’t tell you how many brides cite a lost address as their reason for a delayed thank-you. As you are organizing names and address for your invitations, keep these handy for later reference when addressing your thank-you cards. Additional, task a friend or family member to track gifts when they are being open so you know what’s what. The case of a detached card? A card-less gift, should be set aside as well as lonely cards. After all gifts are open, attempt to pair the lost mates. No luck? Ask Mom or Dad if they have any idea... often guests will share planned gifts with family. A vague thank-you, not mentioning an exact gift may be another option in a pinch. What do you say? Sadly, technology has turned many of us into miserable writers that speak in code less than 140 characters. Knowing what to say can be another reason for delayed letter writing. Simple and sweet is my best recommendation... thank your guest for coming, making reference to a favorite part of the day (yours or what you might think their’s was) and bringing Item A (mentioning how you might use this, specifically if cash was given). Signed, sealed and delivered. Finally, writing 100 plus thank-you cards in one sitting is bound to make the grateful task into a surefire chore. Break up your thank-you notes, writing them over a few nights of must-see TV (with wine in hand!). And don’t forget the groom... last time I checked he’s capable of a thank-you, too. For the bride hard press for time or looking for inspiration there’s an app for that. Recently, I stumbled across Thankster.com, a site offering computer generated hand-written notes (in your penmanship, no less). While I still strongly argue for writing thank notes to wedding guests by hand (they were important enough to get an invitation, right?), this also offers a great resource for clever and thoughtful words of appreciation. Finally, politics aside, former President George W. Bush was said to begin every day in office hand writing thank you notes. Through waning popularity, economic collapse, two wars and a shaky legacy, he still found things to be thankful for everyday. That, if nothing else, tells us the power of a thank you. The Story: Adam and I met in pharmacy school; going through that rigorous process together fortified our relationship with mutual respect and a sense of commonality. The Big Day: I laughed at how much I cried! I was emotional all day, I was so full of love for Adam and our friends and families that it was pouring out of me, literally. My something old, an embroidered handkerchief, was totally soaked at the end of the night. Our most memorable moment was our first dance as husband and wife. We aren’t the best dancers but we totally had our moment. We danced to Ryan Adams version of Wonderwall; it was like we were the only two people in the room. Wedding Details: There were two things we did that really allowed us to enjoy our wedding to the fullest. First was to get nearly all of our posed wedding party pictures before the guests arrived. Keep in mind that this requires seeing each other before the ceremony so it isn’t for the superstitious, but it worked for us, and we were able to immediately join our guests at the reception. The other was having a receiving line (just the two of us). Not only did it pace the flow of guests through the buffet, it enabled us to eat too, which we vowed we were going to do. We were then able to make causal rounds to each table without worrying that we might miss greeting one of our guests. It was also important for the day to be very “us”. From the converse sneakers, to the Indian food and the harpists’ rendition of Stairway to Heaven and Freebird, it was all about us and what we wanted our wedding to be. It all started with the venue. I wanted a clean, modern aesthetic so BANQ was the perfect choice for us. I was the DIY queen! I made all of my flowers and centerpieces. My bouquet consisted of around 125 white, cobalt blue, sky blue, turquoise, and parakeet green paper roses. The main wedding colors were turquoise and black. Advice: My goal when planning the wedding was to always keep Adam in sharp focus and everything else blurry. I was able to execute my vision without losing sight of what was most important- that we were getting married, not just having a wedding.

WEDDING VENDORS

You’ve got questions and I have answers to your most common questions when booking and working with your wedding vendors. Let’s cut through the red tape and get to planning! by Pink Lady Krista at ThePinkBook.com

1

I ‘m getting overwhelmed by all these wedding emails! What can I do?

2

Is it appropriate to let vendors know that you have booked someone else?

3

Is it true that vendors charge more when it’s a wedding?

4

First things first... set up a separate email account for your wedding planning. This will keep wedding emails separate from your personal account and once you’re married, you can simply stop checking it. Check out MyBridemail.com for a wedding specific email service. What not to do? Don’t report the email as spam unless you are sure that it is. If you no longer wish to receive emails from a vendor, simply unsubscribe from the email (at the bottom of nearly all email newsletters) or contact the vendor directly asking to be removed from their list. Reporting an email as spam can limit a vendor’s ability to email other brides and grooms that want the information.

Absolutely! Letting a vendor know that you have decided to go with another vendor is definitely a good idea. Not only will this stop email follow-up but vendors are able to release a date to other couples looking to book. Sending a short email will generally do the trick. If you feel so inclined, giving a reason on why they weren’t the right fit is normally appreciated as well. Professional wedding vendors want to know how they can better serve future brides and grooms!

The answer is often yes... and it should be. While this may not seem fair, the difference in the amount of work related to a wedding vs. other social functions or corporate events is fairly significant. Often an event of similar size and budget for a retirement party or family reunion will require a third of the email and phone correspondence compared to a wedding. Corporate clients are even less and rarely ask for tastings, multiple meetings outside business hours and numerous proposals adjustments. All this increases the overall time a vendor spends when working with brides and grooms and since time is money, weddings cost more. If this still doesn’t seem right, ask your vendors to explain why they charge more. Confident and professional vendors are happy to explain pricing so it makes sense to their clients. If not... go with a vendor that has fair pricing policies.

My wedding vendor is not returning my calls and I’m not happy with their services! Isn’t that a breach of contract? Ideally, no bride or groom should ever have to deal with a poor performance by a wedding vendor, during or after the planning process. While I am not a legal expert, I have been on the both sides of this fence. Before you do anything, take a good look at the contract and cancellation fees. While few contracts will address customer service, a client always reserves the right to cancel their agreement. This will likely result in a loss of your initial deposit and could send you on a frantic last minute hunt for a vendor. Instead, I suggest sitting down with your vendor for a heart to heart on your concerns. Stay calm and offer suggestions for how your problems can be addressed. Avoid being overly dramatic and attacking a vendor as it will get you nowhere, fast. If possible, ask to work with another employee that might better mesh with you personally or ask to speak with a general manager or owner. If no solution is in sight, follow your gut and find a new vendor. Better to lose a small deposit than have a wedding vendor disaster on your big day. Note: The closest your wedding day is, the higher the cancellation fee will likely be. Address your apprehensions when they occur, rather than wait until a budget crunch leaves you little option other than to hope things will work out. Small Claims Court can be some help here but probably not in time for wedding day.

Jessica Crews & Jonathan Grindstaff August 27, 2011

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Jim Goodwin Photography

60 The Pink Bride Magazine

Jessica Crews & Jonathan Grindstaff 08.27.11 The Proposal: I had just taken my last Praxis exams to become eligible to teach school one very early Saturday morning in January. I went over to Jonathan’s house, like I always did, to find that he was not there but my friend Lucy was there with a camera and a sealed envelope with my name on it. This would start a journey that would change our lives forever. He led me on a scavenger hunt of envelopes and family members. Each envelope contained a riddle that led me to another family member. I was able to see my grandparents, my friends and everyone close to me. The final clue led me to one of our friend’s cabins where Jonathan was waiting on bended knee, ring in hand, with a letter that read “Will you marry me?” We celebrated with a bonfire and cookout with a few close friends that recorded the entire event. The Big Day: From start to finish, our wedding day was like a fairy tale. I was the princess getting married to my prince charming at a southern plantation. We were very blessed to not have anything happen that we were not prepared for the day of the wedding. I know it may sound cliché, but one of my most memorable moments of the day was when we turned around after our first married kiss and faced our families as husband and wife for the first time. It is a moment that I will never forget. Jonathan says his most memorable moment was seeing me for the first time when I turned the corner during the ceremony. Seeing the excitement of his face is a very, very close second for me. One of the funniest moments was when the music had stopped for speeches, the ring bearer and cutest 3 year old you will ever see, walked over to the DJ and asked him to put the music back on because he wanted to dance. He then walked back to the center of the dance floor and waited for the music to start. It was precious. The Details: We wanted a traditional wedding. We wanted it to feel like the “old days” of the forty’s and fifty’s when everyone got dressed up to go out. We kept with that theme through the reception as our first dance was to “Always” by Frank Sinatra and the wedding party walked in to “Sign, Sealed, Delivered”. The rest of the evening also featured music from the same eras. We kept the décor simple because the elegance of the Martha Washington Inn didn’t need our help to set the mood for fun and romance. We chose to do shades of lavender and brown for our colors because lavender is my favorite color and, with it being Summer, the brown tuxes seemed a good fit. One project that was a DIY was our lemonade stand at the ceremony. As the guests came in and signed our thumbprint tree, they also had an opportunity to get a glass of tea or lemonade and leave the bride and groom their “2 cents” worth of advice of marital bliss. Without the help of my bridesmaids and one very artistic bridesmaid’s husband this dream of mine would never have came true.
