It’s conversation after rehearsal and laughter on the way home from performance.

It’s seeing your grandchild welcomed into the chorus that has brought you so much joy.

It’s the first time your voice blends into a magical ringing chord. It’s arranging a piece of music — and then hearing your arrangement sung for the first time onstage.

It's a commitment to Musical Excellence that drives us not to take each other for granted. It’s all this and more. It’s what you give when you donate to Sweet Adelines International. All gifts made between May 1, 2022–April 30, 2023 count toward the Support Life on a High Note campaign. Our goal is to raise $200,000 to support programs through the Education, Scholarship, Young Singers, and Greatest Need Funds. Giving to the Support Life on a High Note Campaign supports the Musical Excellence that has been the hallmark of Sweet Adelines since 1945 that is not only our history but part of our journey into the future together! To donate or find out more, visit www.sweetadelines.com/give, text “Support” to 1.918.992.4838 (U.S. phone numbers only), or contact philanthropy@sweetadelines.com.

Thank you (for everything you do),

Our staff has been busy with preparations for this event and will continue to be on the job until the very last note is sung. The partnership with our membership has been forged in the fire of the past couple of years, and we look forward to the strength and power of that partnership as we move into our future together.

PHOENIX 2022 | 3

Welcome to the Sweet Adelines International 2022 Convention and Competition! How appropriate that after two years of restrictions that kept us away from this annual tradition, we meet in Phoenix, a city named after the legendary bird that symbolizes rebirth, resilience and immortality. Like the new Phoenix rising from the ashes, we are presented with the opportunity for a new beginning that rises from everything we were before with the promise of all we have the potential to become! We are returning with a new appreciation for everything that makes our organization great. In the spirit of the resilience of the Phoenix, we survived and thrived during the time of restrictions. We learned how strong our community is as we supported each other through a time when we couldn’t sing together in person. We capitalized on the advantages of technology to keep our educational excellence progressing forward. And finally, we now get to enjoy live, in-person educational sessions to kick off our convention!

As always, I am filled with gratitude for all of you. I am so excited to hear you cheer on each performer, greet each other with tears and laughter and to catch up over shared stories and experiences. I am thrilled to be here with you at this time and in this place as we rise and continue the Legend of Sweet Adelines.

Our valiant competitors have been preparing under conditions that we can describe as challenging at the very least! The work you have been doing to re-establish vocal and performance skills while adapting rehearsal environments is remarkable and inspirational. You have the gratitude of our whole organization for being a part of this event that will provide one of the most important first steps toward our future.

Like the Phoenix, we are being reborn again as we return to our celebration of live performances and to sharing moments of friendship, love, humor and introspection through our mutual love of singing. What a joy it will be to hear the glorious Sound of our Music as we ring our chords again and present Visual Communication of our authentic Expression through live, in-person performances. And no one will be as joyful as our judges as they provide assessments that will serve us so well in guiding and encouraging us to soar high again!

The first International Champion Chorus trophy was retired in 1995. It was designed by the Balfour Company and represents Sweet Adelines International’s continuing efforts to harmonize the world. The traveling trophy, 1973-1995, was first presented to the Racine (Wisconsin) Chorus, directed by Jarmela Speta. It is now at International Headquarters. Currently a new trophy is presented each year and is retained by the winning chorus. Special Performance 2023 International Champion Chorus Closing Songs

Special thanks to track producers Tony De Rosa and Michaela Johnston for donating their time and talents to create learning tracks for this arrangement. All three versions are available free of charge at shop.barbershop.org and you can also find the TTBB and SATB at www.advocals.com (Tony) and the SSAA at www.officialjohnstonmusic.com (Michaela).

Performance Notes

1) This key (F) should work well for female barbershop ensembles, but feel free to pitch it up or down if that better fits your particular ensemble’s vocal strengths. This arrangement is also available in A b (TTBB for female voices) and C (SATB for mixed voices).

From the Composer/Arranger

3) The song starts with a simple message: “it’s the music that brings us together,” and continues to tell the story of what music means to us. From sweet melodies to grand harmonies, music is the emotional fire that fuels our souls. Music is passion, music helps us through good times and bad times, and when our troubles might be especially great, music is there to help ease the burden. The message starts simply, grows more emotional, passionate, and grand, and then comes back to the simple thought that “it’s the music that brings us together” . . . but it’s the friends we share music with that matter the most and that make each day special.

2) There are optional notes shown in measures 17 (bass), 18 (bari), and 20 (bass). These work just fine, and may be considerations for your ensemble depending upon the voices and the key you choose.

This song was written shortly after “shelter-in-place” for COVID-19 started. As with many barbershop ensembles, my chorus had just started virtual rehearsals and it was inspiring to see how many barbershoppers still wanted to find ways to rehearse, learn more, talk about music, and most importantly, stay connected to all of our barbershop friends. It’s easy for me to get emotional about the impact barbershop has had on my life, but with the craziness of everyday life, we don’t always get a lot of opportunities to remember WHY barbershop is so important in our lives. Sharing a song or a great tag with friends is one thing that made us all go nuts for barbershop in the first place. Even when we're not able to sing together, it's incredibly inspiring and helps us remember WHY when so many still do so much to virtually get together with the friends that make music so meaningful to all of us.
