Martha Eiley is Pickled Parrot Chili Cook-off Champion! Martha Eiley knows how to make good chili! She placed first out of a record-breaking 18 entries submitted to this year’s Pickled Parrot Chili Cook-off – a fundraiser for the Placencia Assassins football team. The home-cook told guests at the event that she hadn’t planned on entering the cook-off, but was encouraged by her husband Glenn Eiley who said he loves her chili. Judges Charo Westby, Lola Delgado and Big Al loved it too. Each entry, identified only by number, was available for tasting by paying guests who waited in long lines. Eiley’s pot was one of the first to finish. Placing second was Brenda of Brenda’s Caribbean Cooking, third: Resident Retiree Cindy Weller, fourth: Dawn Berry-Pollard of Dawn’s Grill ‘n’ Go and fifth: Jerry Winters. According to Pickled Parrot Co-owner Wende Bryan, this was their largest chili cook-off yet. The party rocked from 4 p.m. until closing time late in the night with the chili-eating crowd dancing away to live music by resident and visiting musicians: Steven Fasano, Mark Finnegan, Mitch Thorndike, Beau, Graham Berrie and Emmeth Young.

U.S. Soldier and Girlfriend Reunite in Placencia

I

n April 2011, 30-year-old paralegal Shelby Duncan learned that her boyfriend would be deployed to Kuwait for 13 months. It would be a long time apart for the North Carolina couple who had been inseparable since they started dating in June 2009. Before Bryan Anderson, a 36-year-old mechanic with the United States National Guard set off for his mission, he and his girlfriend had decided to plan a special meeting in the tropics at the end of his deployment. While most soldiers reunite with loved ones and families at home, Shelby and Bryan wanted to celebrate their reunion in a place far away from North Carolina with plenty of time to spend with each other.

Shelby Duncan and Bryan Anderson enjoyed Easter festivities in Placencia and much more.

The two had their eyes set on St. Lucia. But while Bryan was on his high-level threat mission in the Middle East servicing war tanks, somewhere else showed up on the radar. Please see REUNION IN PLACENCIA on page 21.
