“Mr. Nick”, One of Placencia’s Oldest Residents, Passes at 91 — Bob Nicolait, better known as Mr. Nick to generations of Placencians, passed away on April 1 while visiting relatives in the United States. The following is a short biography compiled by his family.

In 1949, Robert married Joyce McClintock and had two children from that union, a son, Lander, now of Santa Barbara, CA, and a daughter, Eva, now of San Francisco, CA. The first marriage ended in divorce in 1970.

Robert Nicolait was born in the U.S. state of New Jersey on March 31, 1922, but grew up on Long Island, New York, near the sea. He built his first boat at age 12 in which he explored the marshes and inlets of the marine landscape. His love of the sea and boats never left him.

Robert Nicolait began his professional life as a food technologist and for 15 years was the quality control supervisor for the world’s largest door-to-door bakery in Los Angeles. After leaving Los Angeles, he owned and operated a soft drink bottling plant in Santa Barbara, CA, which he sold before moving to Belize.

Lobsterfest 2013 Design Celebrates Local Fishermen The Sierra Brothers of Placencia Village have won the Placencia Lobsterfest T-shirt Artwork Competition for the second consecutive year.

Grayson and Omar, ages 21 and 24 took a more intimate approach in this competition that was very different from the more expansive festival scene depicted in their 2012 submission. The 2013 winning artwork portrays a close-up shot of two fishermen standing in a small skiff and removing a spiny lobster from a traditional wooden lobster trap.

Inspiration for the painting came from a photograph on display at the Placencia Producers Cooperative seaweed processing plant. The Sierra Brothers say they were struck by the photo, which featured popular Placencia fishermen brothers, Dale and Louis Godfrey. “We decided that this would be the best way to have grassroots people representing something that everyone loves and enjoys,” said Omar. Of course it may have also been the appeal of another set of hard working Belizean brothers.

A graphic art submission from The Flying Pig proprietor, Patrick Gonzalve, joined the Sierra Brothers’ painting for voting at “A Taste of the Peninsula” – the sixth annual benefit for the Placencia Volunteer Fire Department held at the Tipsy Tuna on March 9.

The Sierras won the competition with 73 votes while Gonzalve’s entry took 53 votes. “It feels good to have our art join the ranks of popular local artists and previous Lobsterfest winners like Anton Leslie and Ernest Garcia,” said Grayson. “Maybe we’ll give someone else a chance next year.” ▪

Soul and Passion Visit Placencia Belize’s dynamic upcoming music star Melonie Gillett, alongside Chami-Ka, recently graced the stage and wowed guests at Robert’s Grove’s regular Saturday beach BBQ. Robert’s Grove was excited to have been chosen as the venue for the video shoot accompanying Chami-Ka and Melonie’s new song, “Lo Que Siento Por Ti”.

“Singing at Robert’s Grove Beach Resort is always memorable!! It was a very personal experience, allowing me to make a one on one connection with the audience. Jean-Marc, Michael and the entire Robert’s Grove team are so great to work with. They offer the most humbling experience, and the Ascenthium guitarist, Wamalali drummers, and singers Trecia Gabourel and Chanelle Parks all complemented the overall performances by Chami-ka and I. Another huge achievement was the development of her own production business, Metamorph Creatives, giving the opportunity to work with prominent businesses. At only 28, no newcomer to the music industry, Melonie recently became a spokesperson and member on the board of the Music Industry Association of Belize, and realizes that a music career goes far beyond singing and recording music. This year she plans to release her 3rd album and share more dynamic music videos through Metamorph Creatives, as well as expanding horizons outside of Belize.

He spent his first six months there designing a 40 foot schooner and collecting materials for its construction. The keel for the boat was laid in May, 1974, and the sailboat steamed out of the Belize River in October.

Robert founded his company, Robert Nicolait & Associates Ltd., in 1979 which he built into a business specializing in solar energy and water treatment. Because of the business, he and his family lived several years in Belize City, on the sea where he was never far from his beloved schooner. He ran his company until ill health forced him into retirement in 2007 at the age of 85.

Nick, as Robert was known to his friends and family, was destined to live the rest of his life in Belize. His love and respect for the people of Belize, for the sea, and for boats enriched his life, as did his passion for reading and painting. He enjoyed at least two generations of Placencia and Belize City school children sitting at his table doing homework or standing at the window watching him paint. His door was always open and he was always willing to lend a helping hand. Nick became a citizen of Belize in 1989.

Nick considered it a blessing that he had discovered Placencia when it was still an isolated fishing village without roads or telephones.

He appreciated all that he learned from the seamen and fishermen and took a lively interest in the local sailing boats which were still in use when he moved there. He never tired of recalling memories of conversations and words of wisdom shared throughout the years with those he called the “old timers”. ▪ Editor’s note: “Miss Lou”, the 40’ schooner Nick built 39 years ago, is still in use as a fishing vessel at Turneffe Atoll.

Best Year Yet for “Taste of the Peninsula”

By Cindy Weller Taste of the Peninsula Event Chairperson Those of you who attended last month’s “Taste of the Peninsula” will no doubt agree that our 6th annual benefit for the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department turned out to be the best PVFD benefit yet!

Tipsy Tuna once again provided us with the perfect setting on the beach for our signature fundraiser for the Volunteer Fire Department.

Guest and host satisfaction this year had much to do with the change in format. At the gate, each guest exchanged their entrance ticket for 10 food coupons to “spend” as they wished.

Once inside the gate our guests discovered a wide array of savory appetizers and tasty desserts to choose from, all arranged outdoors allowing room to move about.

Because guests were able to move freely among the many offerings, lines were minimal and each person was able to choose the items they especially wanted to taste.

Due to personal choices for each plate, we experienced far less waste than in years past; and all guest plates, bowls, and cutlery were biodegradable.

The exceptional quality and quantity of food, exciting raffle prizes, great music, and lively guests all made this an event to remember.

Worth More Alive Than Dead: Belize Contributes to Historic Trade Protection for Sharks and Rays

By Dr. Rachel Graham Director Gulf and Caribbean Sharks and Rays Program, Wildlife Conservation Society, rgraham@wcs.org In March, government and conservation leaders in Belize made a historic and bold decision to protect sharks and rays from the ravages of international trade. In doing so, they are also protecting the economic future of Belize and Belizean families.

Country delegates attending the 16th conference of the parties for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) voted on Thursday, March 14 to list five commercially fished species of sharks and three species of rays currently threatened with extinction.

Tarpon Caye Lodge Guest Scores Two Grand Slams in Two Days!

Carlos Cortez of Chile made waves at Tarpon Caye Lodge in March when he scored two grand slams in just two days! Any fisherman will tell you that this is not an easy feat. According to Tarpon Caye Lodge Marketing Director Charles Leslie, Jr., the 51-yearold is an expert fly fisherman. “With a seasoned guide like Charles Leslie, Sr. who knows how to get the client top of the fish, it is harmonic speaking sweet nothings in the fish God’s ear,” said Leslie.

Cortez works as a Salt Water Advisory Specialist for Fly Fishing The Run – a sport fishing guidance and travel service targeting fishermen worldwide. Cortez joined Fly Fishing The Run during 2012. Born in southern Patagonia Argentina, he has been fly fishing salmon for over 35 years. Since 2008, he has frequently visited the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Turk and Caicos, Mexico, Cuba, Florida and Belize getting a solid knowledge about fly fishing in salt water.

According to Leslie, Cortez first visited Tarpon Caye Lodge in January during which time the “weather gods were not too nice.” The relentless fisherman decided to make another trip to Tarpon Caye when the best catch came his way in just the first two days.

Placencia Caye Yacht Club Holds 6th Annual Easter “Notta Regatta” On Easter Sunday, the Placencia Caye Yacht Club (PCYC) celebrated their 6th annual Easter Notta Regatta. Unlike most regattas in the Caribbean, sailors in the “Notta Regatta” don’t take themselves too seriously. There is much goofing around and merry making on board.

After departing from Yoli’s Bar and Grill with blue sunny skies overhead, the 12 participating teams enjoyed a lovely north easterly wind along their course. The boats sailed towards Colson Caye, then looped around and headed out to the Placencia beach front. The last stretch saw a flock of bright white sails cruising through the turquoise Placencia channel making their final stop at Yoli’s.

Placing first in monohulls was Wolf II; first place in catamarans was Iguana Dance; first place in trimarans was Gaan Klayr and an honorable mention went to Baby Cake, who placed last overall.

Other participating sailing vessels included Ally Kat, Latitude Adjustment, Lill, Mariposa, Moonslipper, Chkm8, Seaker and Elixir.

Sailors also had chance to participate in a “Luck-of -the-Draw.” Baby Cake won a Tutti-Frutti gift certificate ; Iguana Dance, a Maya Beach Bistro gift certificate ; Gaan Klayr, one case of beer from Yoli’s Bar; Moonsplipper, one case of beer from PCYC; Seaker, one bottle of rum; Elixir, one bottle of rum; Chkm8, one bottle of rum; and Wolf II, one bottle of rum.

Placencia Sailing Club Brings Home More Medals!

On March 9, the Placencia Sailing Club took five young sailors to compete in the Baron Bliss Regatta in Belize City. Carlos Villatoro brought home the silver medal for placing second and Isaac Ritchie brought home the bronze for third place. The Placencia Sailing Club encourages everyone to congratulate the boys because they are making the organization very proud.

The 6th annual Notta Regatta was organized by PCYC Commodore Jeff Scott and Race Committee members: Wini Mertens and Steve Lobban, Kim and Nick Carpenter, and Deb Coston and Ted Berry.

Some young members of the Placencia Sailing Club joined the crews on board for a one-of-a-kind fun learning experience! ▪

Sanitation Wins Second Annual 5-A-Side Tournament Again!

Team Sanitation are back-to-back champs!

The Placencia Sanitation Department is the back-to back champion of Placencia’s second annual InterOffice 5 A-Side Tournament. At an exciting game on March 29 at the Placencia Village Sports Complex, Sanitation defeated Robert’s Grove 5-0. Still, both teams were in good spirits after the game and award presentations. The Inter-office 5-A Side has become a favorite evening attraction for local villagers seeing the support of many families, work colleagues and friends.

Placing third in the tournament was Captain Jak’s Rentals and fourth, Rumfish Bar. Other participating teams represented Wendy’s Restaurant, Wallen’s Hardware, Barefoot Bar, The Moorings and last year’s runner up, Turtle Inn. Tournament competitions started this year on January 25.

Officials for the 2013 tournament were: Elsworth Eiley, David Torres, Lennox Leslie, Davaughny Tillett and Anthony Baptist.

The Placencia Inter-Office 5 A-Side Tournament has grown significantly since its debut in 2012 increasing the number of participating teams and sponsors. According to organizer, Selvin Monteroso, their accomplishments have received so much recognition countrywide that the Football Federation of Belize have invited them to discuss the possibility of joining the Federation’s nationally recognized 5 A-Side(or Futsal) tournaments in Belize. Community Pitches in to Upgrade Placencia Police Station When Inspector Mark Flowers took command of the Placencia Police Sub-Formation in July 2012, he saw an urgent need to upgrade the peninsula’s main station in Placencia Village. Aside from its run down appearance, the compound according to the Inspector, was inadequate for effective policing.

After immediate consultations with Placencia Village Council Chairman, Charles Leslie, Jr., efforts took off to make some changes.

“The Placencia Village Council started lobbying the community for financial support and so many people stepped in,” said Leslie while standing in front of the police station undergoing renovation. “What you see happening here is the product of a major group effort.”

According to the chairman, the anticipated cost for the project, which started in January 2013, is $80,000. Thus far the entire police station has received a paint job, old holding cells are being converted into office spaces and a new adjoining structure will be used for the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB). Within the compound, a separate two -story structure using a building donated by Peter Dahl is under construction. The chairman says it will support two holding cells and an office on the first floor and living quarters for police officers on the second floor. When the construction dust settles the Placencia BTIA will add the final touch of landscaping.

Flowers is the first officer of inspector rank to lead peninsula law enforcement as previously the commander’s post was slotted for a sergeant. Complementing the upgrade was an increase in man (and woman) power which has seen the force grow from 18 to 31 police officers. “This additional space is important for the growth of our security services in this expanding Peninsula-wide community. It’s satisfying to see action being taken to improve the

work environment and outside appearance,” said Flowers.

Chairman Leslie thanked all individuals and businesses who have donated towards the Police Station upgrade project. He also recognized Placencia Village hotelier Jacki Tipton for her assistance with collecting donations and her hands-on work as well as Maya Beach contractor Rhoan Whyte for contributing his time and skills towards the construction efforts.

“All of us benefit, so you have to give back to the community,” said Whyte.

Placencia Mooring Master’s (PMM) Community Update Principal Stephen Whyte at Placencia’s St. John’s Memorial Anglican Preschool and Primary School accepted a donation of 20lbs of rice for the school’s feeding program from PMM. “Pat the Jaguar”: Popular Item for Kids at the Placencia Tourism Center The Placencia Tourism Center, headquarters for the Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) has partnered with The Added Touch to support an educational initiative that will introduce many children in Belize and around the world to an amazing jaguar. The story of Pat the Great Cat, a Jaguar’s Journey (PTGC) (2011, Sharp Literacy, Inc.) is an informative and touching story of Pat, a Belizean wild-born jaguar whose injuries rendered him unable to survive in the wild.

Before we tell you the amazing story of how this book came to be, first, Jared Baeza of Grace Primary School in Belize City earned the honor of naming one of Pat the “Great” Cat’s newborn cubs.

Jared chose the name Zean (pronounced Zee-ahn!) because it comes from the word BeliZEAN and the contest required that the jaguar cub's name should reflect his heritage. The school children of Belize and Milwaukee were an integral part of creating a the book. Part of the wonderful tale that grew out of the project occurred recently when the Zoo requested that students from Belize and Milwaukee name the two jaguar cubs born to Pat and Stella, his mate.

“I love that name!” stated one Placencia woman.

“If I had a son, I would name him Zean!” Jared may have come up with a name that will be given to more than a jaguar cub!

But who is Pat the Cat and what was his journey?

The beginning of his story starts long ago. There was once a young boy who stuttered so badly he was picked on, much like the jaguars were in Belize at the time. Back in those days, people shot jaguars because they believed them to be dangerous and predatory. This stuttering boy, Alan Rabinowitz, became a scientist and came to Belize to study jaguars and their habits in the area known today as Maya Center. His research dispelled the beliefs that the great cats commonly stalked livestock and even people. As a result of Rabinowitz’s research and efforts, the Government of Belize created the first of its kind in the world, a jaguar preserve, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Pre-

But thanks to Alan Rabinowitz’s research, Belizeans learned about great cats. Pat was saved and moved to the Belize Zoo, where the loving staff nurtured him back to health. (Years ago, Pat would have been shot for attacking cattle, the only food he could catch while injured; so he was lucky to have lived in this time) Pat was finally moved to the Milwaukee County Zoo where he now lives and where he recently (November 13, 2012) became the proud father of two adorable cubs.

Pat’s is a wonderful story that needed to be told and Nancy Kennedy wanted kids to tell it. But who would write it? (Cats are magnificent, but so far, none has become an author.) The answer, of course, was children, because they will be the researchers and rescuers of endangered species in the future. And it is children who have the heart to understand such stories. While Nancy Kennedy presented the story to children in Milwaukee, Belize

Zoo educators presented the story to students in Belize. A mountain of material such as essays, art work and poetry was collected from the students and this was taken by SHARP Literacy Inc., and woven in to the re-telling of the real-life story of Pat the “Great” Cat: a Jaguar’s Journey.

In Belize, Pat the Great Cat Literacy Project was spearheaded locally by Mrs. Barbara Thummalapally but that included many aspects, collaborators and contributors.

After the book was published, Ms. Nancy and Ms. Barbara knew that the book truly belonged to the children of Belize. How could they get it into their hands? The Ministry of Education was happy too with this Belizean born story! In 2012 the MOE officially endorsed PTGC as a supplementary reader for all Belize primary schools. With the book approved, the next hurdle was obtaining 30 copies for each primary school. Where would the money come from? Last summer, Ms. Barbara began the momentous task of raising $50,000USD in donations to insure that the books would be printed and shipped to Belize. She succeeded with the help of good friends and supporters including Delta Airlines, Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) and Rotary Clubs of Belize, to name a few!

Trucks, buses and tractors MUST drive at 15 mph within our villages. While in other villages, according to national law, all other vehicles may drive at 25 mph, the Placencia Village by-laws (to be approved) calls for all other vehicles to drive at 15 mph south of the Placencia Village Water Tower. A driver should, when about to enter villages or any inhabited areas, SLOW DOWN and drive with EXTREME CARE and should always be on the lookout for CHILDREN dashing from road sides.

Headlights must be on at all times when driving a vehicle at night.

A driver should use the mechanical indicators whenever he changes lanes, turn or pulls out into traffic from a parked position.

In order to avoid accidents it is safe to drive one vehicle length from the vehicle in front of you for each 10 miles of speed.

Peninsula’s Young and Old Treated to Free Eyesight Testing Back on November, members of the Rotary Club of Placencia and volunteers April, Justin and Liz started doing preliminary eye tests on all students from St. John’s and St. Alphonsus primary schools.

Due to the holidays and school schedules, the testing was finally completed in February. About 700 students were tested. Out of that number, 100 students failed the basic vision test (72 from Seine Bight and 28 from Placencia) and needed to see an eye doctor for further testing. BCVI, Belize Center for Visually Impaired, arranged for a team of doctors and volunteers to come to the peninsula on March 13 of this year. This was organized by Dr. Leolyn Garcia of BCVI. The team hails from Kentucky and is part of His Servants Ministries. This is the third year this organization has sent doctors to Belize and the first time they have visited our communities. The two Doctors of Optometry, Dr. Luckett and Dr. Peplinsky, brought with them Lois and Rayanne to handle the organization, check in and paperwork and ten students( Lauren, Kim, Kevin, David, Erica, Emily, Courtney, Johnny, Liz and another Emily) from The New England College of Optometry.

These students have already completed their Bachelors degree and are in their second year of a four year program for an OD degree (Doctor of Optometry). Everyone on the team was professional, courtesy and just plain nice! It was an honor and a privilege to work side by side with people who paid their own way and gave up vacation time to help us out.

They divide into two teams. One team went to Placencia and the other team went

to Seine Bight. Rotarian Gail Smith, along with Jim Weller and Lynn O’Brien, headed up our volunteer team in Placencia and coordinated getting the students to and from the community center as well as keeping records of the students. Rotarians Wanda Stakutis, Greg Valiton and Linda Cazin handled things for Seine Bight with help from Marion Carr.

HSM brought with them many pairs of free glasses and sunglasses. In addition they provided free frames for the students that were not able to be fitted with the glasses they brought.

The free frames reduce the cost of the glasses by half!

Out of all the students seen, there were several from Seine Bight and Placencia that actually needed glasses. Only seven students were not able to get their glasses that day.

The team also saw about fifty adults from each village. Many of these adults received free eye drops for various conditions including glaucoma. There were several adults that are in need of cataract surgery which hopefully they can get from a team coming later this year.

Unfortunately, time ran out and not every adult could be seen. We are hoping that this group comes back again!

The best thing was walking back through the school yard and seeing students wearing their brand new glasses! There is a direct correlation between poor eye sight and poor grades so it is very important to make sure the students can see.

Sunglasses help protect the eyes from harmful UV and should be worn at all times in the sun to keep the eyes healthy.

“Pat the Cat”: Available at the Placencia Tourism Center Continued from page 25 book in their classrooms, but also to exchange lesson plans and ideas on how to incorporate the many areas teachers need to cover in the classroom. Barbara, an educator herself, continued her collaboration with the MOE to help teachers use the book in their classrooms. She knows what it is like to have too many students, too few resources and not enough time to create lesson plans to teach from a new book, no matter how good it is. With the blessings of the MOE, she recruited a team of teacher trainers, US Peace Corps volunteers, all educators working with the MOE in five districts of Belize. They helped create ready-made lesson plans based on PTGC. Since then, Barbara and her PTGC Team have traveled the country providing workshops for Standard IV teachers. Class sets of 30 books will be shared by every Standard IV classroom in Belize by the end of this school year. The plans will help teachers provide opportunities to use good reading and literacy strategies, in addition to enrichment activities in areas of the curriculum, including natural history of Belize, the Maya, geography, science, math, ecology, conservation, creative writing, art and beauty, which come alive for students through the journey of a very special, and very real, jaguar.

Pat’s GREAT story will now be read by all of the Standard IV children in Belize, because it is their story, their “great” cat and Pat’s adorable cubs are Belizean Ambassador's too, carrying their uniquely Belizean names, Zean (from BeliZEAN and pronounced Zee-ahn) and his brother B’alam , a Mayan word meaning great and powerful king.
