At Roberts Grove, there are many tasks to be completed every day for smooth operation of the resort. They are all important but some work is done behind the scenes and not readily known by guests or even staff. One such area is the financial operations of the resort. It is a demanding and time consuming task while stipulating close attention to detail from a consummate professional. Finance Director Cindy Linarez is the consummate professional that is in charge of this area of operations. Cindy is hard-working, detail oriented, and knowledgeable in all aspects of resort operations. She handles all tasks required of her in a competent, proficient manner, completing them in a timely fashion. She has a good rapport with all staff members and is well-respected among her peers. Cindy is a very important contributing member of the Roberts Grove team and well deserving of the Employee of the Month award. Congratulations Cindy and Thank You for your work!

Fifty Years Later, Fishing Co-op Evaluates Future By Jolie Pollard and Justino Mendez PBTIA Director, director@placencia.com; SEA Education Officer; outreach@seabelize.org The Placencia Producers Cooperative Society Ltd. is celebrating its’ 50-year jubilee since it was founded in 1962. The Co-op was once the heart of Placencia Village, exporting seafood products and operating a seafood processing plant which employed 24 workers. The peak year of co-ops’ productivity was in 1986 when they produced a total of 250,000 pounds of whole fish, 75,000 pounds of conch, 40,000 pounds of lobster tail, but ever since has been declining. (Carne, “Way Bak Den”, 1999) Still, on Friday, June 22, members of the Co-op will gather on the beach at a special ceremony honoring the co-op’s contributions to the Placencia community over the years and paying special recognition to all founding members and key

players. Today the Placencia Co-op is taking some time to evaluate their position. Through assistance from the Southern Environmental Association and funding The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and MAREA, they have hired a consultant to help them plan for the future health of the organization with clean emphasis on strengthening management as well as indentifying two alternatives to fishing. The Co-op has been facing many challenges as more fishermen are not as active as they once were coupled with fishermen preferring to sell independently to resorts and restaurants. Considerations are being made to venture beyond the fishing industry and explore other alternative options and one such option is “seaweed” farming. With funding from COMPACT, the co-op

embarked on a pilot project to create 10 farms measuring 100 x 100 ft, with plans to begin first harvest in August 2012. One other alternative that has been discussed is a “ tourism” project which will provide alternative income for the Coop in rentals of office space, museum, conference hall and restaurant. Plans and a “concept” paper have been sent to “Compete Caribbean” for grant funding and it is the Co-op’s dream to make this a reality. If you are a local fisherman, fisherwoman, tour guide, operator or restaurant owner, the Placencia Producers Cooperative Society Ltd, asks that you support them in buying their produce and for all fishermen to continue their traditional way of bringing their product directly to the Co-op, which in turn will only make it more strong and viable. Mr. Clarence Lopez was one of the proud team of 12 who built the co-op’s processing plant. It was a big step forward for the families of this village, as it provided money by exporting packaged seafood products to the States. Mr. Lopez and other fishermen also traveled to Nicaragua or Puerto Cortes in Honduras to sell their product. Jobs were also provided to younger women who packaged the produce on shipment day. The coop was also responsible for providing the electricity of the homes using their generator. Prior to this amenity, villages used gas lamps for light.

Eight-seven-year old Clarence Lopez started fishing at the age of 21. In his early days, he fished from his sailing canoe and moved on to sailing boats, using the stars, the sun and the knowledge of his ancestors as his compass. At this time, he and other fishermen sailed to Belize City and purchased ice to keep their product cool in Placencia. Fishing and seasonal catching of lobster and conch was the only source of income for the families of

During Mr. Clarence’s early days, a hundred lobsters sold for $11.00! Back then the price of seafood was small, but it paid off because it was in great abundance. Mr. Clarence explained that the fishing co -op was a major part of this community. “If it were not for our ancestors and the sea knowledge they imparted to our younger fishermen, they wouldn’t be the experienced tour guides that they are today,” said Lopez.

Rotary Club Helps Placencia With New Dump Truck By Greg Valiton Placencia Rotarian, gregvwandas@gmail.com It may not be the most glamorous thing there is, but anyone that has spent any time on the Placencia Peninsula knows that trash pickup has, at times, been difficult due to the age of the equipment being used. The Placencia Sanitation Company has done a great job despite the obstacles, however, Goliath (the existing truck) has seen much better days and is ready for a rest. Seeing these problems, Placencia Rotarian Elaine Hoch and her husband, Bend, Oregon Rotarian Axel Hoch, decided to try to do something about it. Elaine describes the process as follows: “During January 2011 Elaine and Axel Hoch visited the Rotary group meeting in Placencia. We were very impressed with the projects and involvement of the Rotarians and heard that a garbage truck was needed for the peninsula. We contacted Bruce Bailey of Bend Garbage and Recycle to ask if he could help us find a garbage truck for Placencia. Bruce considered this request and offered a 1981 International Cab Over Chassis garbage truck. He said he would go through the truck with his mechanics and check it out. Bruce, his son, Brad Bailey, his nephew and chief mechanic, David Artnz, and the seven mechanics at Bend Garbage restored the truck, including newly upholstered seats in the cab. The truck is in really good shape. Bend Garbage and Recycle through Bruce and his wife, Karin, donated the truck. This presented an opportunity to figure out how to deliver the garbage truck to Placencia. Contact was made with Honorable Roland Yorke, General Counsul of Belize, located in Los Angeles, California, who encouraged the project and offered his assistance. I filed an application for airlift of the garbage truck with the United States Air Force under the Denton Program, an humaritarian aid program. This was the first time for the United States Air Force to provide humanitarian assistance to Belize. As part of the application, a letter of exemption from customs duty was issued by the Belize government and written assurances for payment of other taxes and fees were provided by local government. After getting the green light (approval of the application and a very involved airlift certification), the United States Air Force airlifted the truck in a C-5 aircraft from Klamath Falls, Oregon, air force base on Easter Sunday and delivered the truck to an air force base in Charleston, South Carolina pending a flight schedule to Belize. On May 19, 2012, the garbage truck was airlifted from Charleston to Belize

City and driven to Placencia. Bruce has said that he donated the truck but all the necessary doors were kicked open to have the truck finally in Placencia. It took less than a year from the time of applying for Belize government approval and the United States Denton Program for humanitarian aid to Saturday, May 19 when Dr. Alexis, Charles Leslie, Jr., Chairman of the Placencia Village Council, Harald Wallen, Steve Wade and other Rotary members drove the truck into Placencia.

Mega U.S. Airforce jet unleashes refurbished garbage truck from its belly at the Philip Goldson International Airport in Belize City.

After the airlift, the military personnel under the Denton Program, offered further assistance in the event there are other projects for Placencia and Belize in the future. We are both from Europe; Elaine is from England and Axel is from East Germany. We made three visits to Placencia last year, living in the community for several months. One of these days we would like to move to Placencia. We made lots of friends through Rotary and a lot of welcoming arms from the community” What was accomplished goes beyond anything our Rotary Club has ever been involved with. We are extremely grateful for all of the hard work and perseverance by Elaine to make this a reality. This demonstrates what can be accomplished when people set their mind to it and work with others to achieve a common goal. Elaine and Axel deserve high praise for their efforts. Elaine and Axel are supposed to return to Placencia soon and Bruce and Brad Bailey are visiting us in late June. Despite the busy time of the year with Lobsterfest and our annual Rotary Handing Over Ceremony, the Rotary Club of Placencia will do its’ best to let these generous people know what a difference they have made in our community. We hope that Placencia residents will join us in welcoming them and go out of their way to let them know how much their caring and generosity mean to us.

Other Rotary Club News May was an extremely busy and successful month for the Rotary Club of Placencia. BINGO On May 24, a large, very enthusiastic crowd once again gathered at JDees for an evening of fun, cash prizes, and a chance to win the big progressive jackpot (which now is locked in at over $3300). The lucky winners of the regular games were Winnie, Miriam, Juicy (2 time winner), Malu and Steve (split pot), Karl (2 time winner), Harold and Annette. Since the progressive jackpot has gotten so large, an addi-

tional 2 numbers have been called for each game in an effort to find a winner. Despite 63 numbers being called in the “cover all” game, there was no winner of the jackpot, however, Dawn and Marion split a pot of $175. The next game will see an increase in the numbers called for the “cover all” jackpot “, so the odds of winning the big jackpot are increasing with each game. Bingo is scheduled to be held every two weeks, so, make sure to mark your calendars. In an effort to make the games more fun and give people a chance to win more often, changes are being considered that we will share with you at the begin-

ning of each game. As always, we wish to thank our regular caller, Kathy Anglin, J-Dees for providing the venue, and, of course, all the people that come out to play and support their community. SENIOR LUNCH On Sunday May 20, one of our Club’s favorite events of the year, the annual Senior Lunch, was held at the Tipsy Tuna. The day began with Placencia Rotarians (some, like Jim Weller and Steve Wade, fresh from a long day Saturday in Belize City for the arrival of the garbage truck) transporting and Please see Rotary Club News on page 18.

The Chief Justice said the new court will play a significant role in curbing crime in the Southern Stann Creek area, as well as addressing the rise of undocumented immigrants.

Residents of the Placencia Peninsula and surrounding communities will soon have a more efficient avenue to pursue justice. With the opening of the new Magistrate’s Court in Independence village—a quick fifteen minute ride across the lagoon— peninsula residents will no longer need to travel north to Dangriga for court duties. The new location will speed up case management, reduce travel expenses and address security issues of having to transport alleged criminals to Dangriga. These and other improvements were cited by Honorable Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin during his address at the formal opening of the court on Friday, June 8. Benjamin described the previous situation as a “wholly unsatisfactory state of affairs” and emphasized that the judiciary should be accessible to all people in their area of living

Rotary Club News Continued from page 15 setting up tables and chairs and getting everything ready for the arrival of our honored guests. The seniors from Placencia Village started arriving shortly after 11 a.m. and were followed by the seniors from Seine Bight Village, who were transported by a van from the Paradise Resort. Once the guests were seated, Rotary Club of Placencia President Steve Wade welcomed everyone and Placencia Rotarian Lydia Villanueva led the group in a prayer before Mistress of Ceremonies Maretha McCullock got things going for our guests who included Lawrence Augustine (aka Wayal), Balbina Guzman (aka Aunty Bal) , Elogia Lopez (aka Aunty Logi), Dominica Augustine (aka Aunty Meaty), Elizabeth Guzman (aka Aunty Dove), Estell Augustine, Vincent Lopez (aka Bee), Henrietta Augustine, Ionie Augustine (aka Aunty Ion), Francis Guzman, Ann Martinez, Petronela Alvarez (aka Aunty Peto), Anastacio Augustine, Rufina Valerio, Liberato Valerio, Florence Augustine, Olivia Thomas, Angelita Zuniga, Rojelia Estrada, Justo Williams, Nicodema Fernandez and Daniela Flores from Seine Bight Village and Joyce Eiley, Celia Muschamp, Sonia Leslie, Emma Westby, Aldrich Westby, Myrtis Villanueva, Elise Leslie, Lilly Eiley, Hortence Cabral, Ethel Vernon, Gwen Weaver, Nick Nicolait, Lou Nicolait, Evan Fairweather, Alma Fairweather, Juan Caducio, Carlton Young, Karl Lovell, and Jessie Eiley from Placencia Village. Following a delicious lunch of turkey, ham, stuffing, potato salad and flan (with some meals delivered to seniors that were unable to attend) , the group was all driven under the bar roof by a passing shower where they were entertained by Evan Fairweather playing a diverse selection of music on his accordion, singing, dancing, stories, and jokes from several of the seniors and traditional

According to Dangriga Magistrate Edd Usher, once the schedule is regularized he will be traveling to the Independence Court from Dangriga on Tuesdays and Thursdays to hear cases. Chief Justice Benjamin said the Independence Village Court should be fully staffed with an appointed magistrate by July. Furniture for the new courtroom was provided by donations from area residents and businesses, including the Placencia Peninsula. Garifuna singing and dancing from a group of Seine Bight seniors. Through the afternoon, raffles were held and prizes, including grocery baskets, gift certificates for ice cream, free Bingo games, Crystal juice, free water (2 months in each Village), gift certificates for the pharmacy, free cable (2 months in each Village) and cash prizes were won by many of the seniors. At the end of the event, all seniors were given small gift bags containing useful items and sent home with smiles on their faces. As previously indicated, this is the favorite event of the year for many of our Placencia Rotarians as we have an opportunity to honor some very important citizens of our community and let them know how much they mean to us. There are many people to thank, but, Placencia Rotarians Lydia Villanueva and Maretha McCullock have to be at the head of the list for all the work they do putting this event together and making the day so special for all involved. We also wish to thank

Last, but far from least, we wish to extend our deepest gratitude to Salva and Gillian Zabaneh for hosting this event for the second year in a row and going out of their way to help out. Without them, this event would not have been the success that it was and their commitment to the community should be an inspiration to all. UPCOMING June will see the Rotary Club of Placencia holding a joint Board meeting between the incoming and outgoing Officers and Board of Directors to plan for the next Rotary Year, which will begin with the Handing Over Ceremony at Laru Beya on June 30, and ensure a

smooth transition for the projects that are ongoing. As always, we will be sharing a booth at Lobsterfest with the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department to answer questions and provide information as well as selling tickets for our infamous Duck Race that will be held on Saturday (weather permitting) during Lobsterfest. We will, of course, be continuing with our Bingo games every 2 weeks and hope to be planning some additional fund raisers for next year as well as helping out where we can with the annual Battle Cancer Walk to be held on June 22. OUR CLUB The Rotary Club of Placencia has just 20 members at this time. We meet Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. at Yolis; lunch is $10. Come see what is being worked on and how they may help. If we would all strive to make just a little difference in the world, it will add up to a big difference, wouldn’t you like to be part of that?

Placencia Offers Hope to Families and Friends Affected by Addiction A Narcotics Anonymous Family Groups Meeting (Nar-Anon) will be starting in Placencia on Tuesday, June 19. Meetings will be held every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Placencia Community Health Center. The Nar-Anon Family Groups are a worldwide fellowship for those affected by someone else’s addiction. Addiction and alcoholism are family diseases that affect not only the person using the drugs or alcohol but also those around them. The sickness spreads to those of us who care the most as we try to control and fix the addict/alcoholic. Obsession with the addict or alcoholic’s behaviors, stress, worry, fear, guilt, shame and lost of sleep are among some of the symptoms of our illness. Nar-Anon is a 12 step program, part of the family of 12 step programs including Al-Anon, Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous (which are for the addict or alcoholic). If you are affected by someone else’s alcoholism or addiction and are seeking relief, Nar-Anon offers fellowship and hope. Once we accept that addiction is a disease and that we are powerless over it and over the addict, we can do something positive with our own lives and be of greater help to ourselves and others. We can find peace, serenity and recovery for ourselves. If you or someone you know is affected by someone else’s addiction or alcoholism please feel free to join us at weekly Nar-Anon meetings, every Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Community Health Center. What you say in meetings will be held in confidence and your anonymity will be respected. Nar-Anon is not religious, but rather is a spiritual program and as such, respects and accepts all religions and denominations. For more information, please call or text 664-8699. ▪

Nationwide “Artists in Development Tour” Makes Stop in Placencia By Jolie Pollard PBTIA Director, director@placencia.com The Institute of Creative Arts (ICA), a department of the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), stopped in Placencia on May 16 as part of its countrywide Artists in Development Consultation Tour. The Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association (PBTIA) worked along with ICA to canvass local artists to attend the seminar, which was held at Paradise Vacation Hotel. Attendees at the seminar learned of available resources that can aid a wide range of artists with nurturing their artistic skills and developing competitively using creative strategies. ICA Creative Industry Development Officer Jackie Castillo spoke of one program for basket weavers, which fuses traditional Mayan basket weaving with contemporary twists such as ribbons or new designs in order to make the final product more original and marketable. Castillo also presented information on an ongoing artist directory project, which upon completion will allow artists from all over Belize to become part of an online network. Artists will be able to showcase samples of their work and share contact information with potential clients. In addition to learning of available opportunities in the art industry, seminar attendees also shared their ideas with ICA for developing art in Placen-

cia including the revival of the presently defunct local arts association. According to PBTIA board member Aline Habib who also chaired the Placencia 2012 Sidewalk Arts Festival Committee, Placencia has the potential of becoming a leading force in the visual arts and audiovisual industries in Belize. “We have such talented painters, musicians, jewelers, wood carvers, poets and artisans right here, searching for ways to better promote themselves and get their work out there,” she said. “We need to come together and create a tangible association, to stand united as a group, rather than as individuals struggling on our own.” Habib believes that unification will increase Placencia’s chances to receive grants and sponsorships for events, training and seminars.

ALINE HABIB

Local Placencia Artists Greta Leslie, Lola Delgado, Anton Leslie and Ernest Garcia submitted these paintings to Coca Cola’s “Open Happiness” Competition in March. While none placed among the competition’s finalists, their paintings are currently being showcased around the country on a traveling exhibit until October after which they will be auctioned off in support of the Lifeline Foundation. ICA’s Artists in Development Tour aims to strengthen the creative and marketing skills of these and other artists.

Castillo said that ICA is willing to assist with this endeavor. Fourteen artists were present at the seminar including: Greta Lee Leslie, Carlton Young, Skip Weaver, Anton Leslie, Jeanna Casey, Francis Eiley, Ernest Garcia, Khadija Assales, Silvana and Kent, Aline Habib, Safaria Salam, Rosaria Cal, and Mellaky Mibbes. ▪
