PBTIA Promotes Placencia as Summer Destination to Belizeans at Trade Show By Apolo Caliz PBTIA Front Desk and Membership Officer, frontdesk@placencia.com It has been a really rewarding experience to work for the Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association (PBTIA). I was recently assigned to represent our Chapter at the Belize Agriculture and Trade Show (BATS) in Belmopan. My mission was to showcase Placencia as a premier tourism destination in the summer for Belizeans. Thanks to some of our PBTIA members, I was able to take promotional materials with me to the grounds and inform the Belizean public that an affordable Belizean vacation is possible and easily within their reach. Upon arriving to Belmopan on Friday, I quickly noticed how dedicated the BTIA National team was to their work. They had just gotten through with the Belize Tourism Expo (BETEX) in Belize City and dived right into the weekend at BATS. On Friday, we prepared our booth for the crowds and stocked up the storage room with everything that we had taken with us to give away. At the show grounds itself, I decided to take a little walk and see who all were participating at this year’s BATS. I also saw livestock including a very intimidating nine-year-old bull, horses, pigs, chicken “both fried and live.” That night, our team stayed in very comfortable rooms at Rumors Hotel on the outskirts of San Ignacio. On Saturday, we arrived at the grounds at 9 a.m., and the crowds were already lining up at the SMART and Belize Telemedia booths. I was excited and knew that much work was in store for the BTIA. It was amazing to find out how many

Belizeans believe that it is too expensive to vacation in their own country. I was happy to show them that on the Placencia Peninsula, there are accommodation, dining and tour options for different budget levels and that our natural attractions would allow anyone to have an amazing vacation, not to mention our upcoming Lobsterfest in June. In addition to executing my assigned mission to “big up” the Placencia Peninsula to Belizeans, I also worked along with the BTIA team (BTIA National Executive Director Efren Perez, Membership Officer Talia Tillett, Intern Andrew Usher, Volunteer Mr. Sutherland) to promote BTIA’s Belize Staycation raffle and sell tickets. On Sunday, another volunteer, Karina Cunil joined us to help with the raffle promotion, proceeds of which benefit our entire organization across Belize. Belizeans from all different sectors of society visited our booth. I met teachers, various industry professionals and many others who were intrigued about the prospect of being a tourist in their own country and sharing that information with their respective networks. They were also thrilled to learn about BTIA’s raffle which offers grand all-inclusive, two-week tours in different hot tourist spots throughout Belize including Placencia during the summer months. Needless to say, BATS is an excellent option to showcase your business, and I am happy to report that it was certainly worth our PBTIA members’ efforts

Welcome A Letter From the Editor: A man called our office at the Placencia Tourism Center expressing his disappointment that we had published a sentence above our calendar of events in Creole: “Sih weh di goaan.” He said he was a tourist and only knew English and Spanish and that we should have translated that sentence into English. We graciously gave him the translation over the phone, but defended our decision to omit a translation. In this issue of the Breeze, that phrase is in Garifuna, and there’s no translation. If you don’t know what it means, here’s what I want you to do: Make your way to Vern’s Kitchen in Seine Bight Village and while taking the opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal, find someone who speaks Garifuna and ask that person to translate for you. We like to encourage visitors to our Peninsula to immerse themselves in the local scene and what better way to make that connection with our culture than to start a conversation about language?▪ Jolie Pollard, director@placencia.com to drop off their promotional brochures and cards at the Placencia Tourism Center before I set off for my trip. Thank you. I truly hope that next year, we have many more items to take to Belmopan. I encourage all our members: small to large hotels, restaurants, gift shops, real estate agents, everyone – to recognize the value of marketing at BATs. The BTIA is working hard to promote Belize to Belizeans during the ‘slow season’ and we hope that you organize to have your services available to them during the upcoming summer months. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the Placencia Tourism Center. ▪

Sierra Brothers Take Top Honors in T-Shirt Competition By Jolie Pollard PBTIA Executive Director, director@placencia.com This year the Placencia BTIA took the plunge into the social network scene and held its annual Lobsterfest t-shirt design competition on Facebook requesting that voters “like” their favorite image. Like soon turned to love as Grayson and Omar Sierra’s design quickly took the lead and received 181 likes by the time voting wrapped up at noon on May 7. This is the first time 23-year-old Omar and 20-year-old Grayson have joined forces to work on Lobsterfest art. The Placencia brothers have competed against each other in our previous competitions with Grayson victorious in 2009. Why work together this year? Turns out Grayson and Omar had the same vision. “I told Omar about this idea I’ve had for two years, and he said he had the same idea, so that’s why we decided to come together and do this one piece. We think alike,” explained Grayson. Previously, the Placencia BTIA had submissions on hand at our annual Sidewalk Arts Festival where festival goers would select their favorite piece by paper votes. The Sierras said that this year gave them more time to plan their art work. “As artists, we were always busy preparing pieces for the Artfest, so we never had the time to put in the detail we wanted.” And those details captured fans on our Placencia Lobsterfest Facebook page. The painting shows a typical Lobsterfest scene with crowds packed under the Belikin tent dancing to live music while lobster is sizzling on the beach grill. But just at the bottom of the realistic scene is a hint of surrealism. Crawling towards the big party is an adult Caribbean spiny lobster and two juniors tagging behind. “This is depicting that the fest is not just for adults, but for kids as well. It’s a family event!” explained Grayson. “We are also trying to tell people that the Placencia Lobsterfest could not be Lobsterfest without lobsters joining us,” he added. While the concept had been brewing for over two years, Grayson and Omar said they took about three hours to complete the painting in one session. “We are happy to continue to bring original hand-painted art to Lobsterfest, and I must say we shall return. I already have an idea for next year,” said Grayson. JOLIE POLLARD

Vern’s Kitchen Dishes Up Flavour and Tradition By Jolie Pollard

THE MENU AT VERN’S KITCHEN

PBTIA Executive Director, director@placencia.com

Everyday, Vern’s serves a special Garifuna dish. She also cooks Creole favorites like rice and beans, stew beans with coconut white rice, stew chicken, fish (broiled, steamed, fried) beef meatballs and porkchops. At breakfast time, many stop by for fresh Creole bread, Johnny cakes, bun and powdah (powder) bun, delicately fragrant with her fresh coconut milk. These are served with eggs, beans, fry fish and even stew chicken, although Verna says most people just ask for butter. Verna is open to cooking something special on request and advises that large groups call in advance to make reservations: 667-0459. VERN’S SPECIAL GARIFUNA DISHES: •

Hudut: Fish cooked in coconut milk seasoned with special herbs and spices and served with a side of fufu (mashed boiled green and ripe plantains). This is Vern’s most popular dish. Expect snapper, grouper or barracuda in Vern’s hudut.

Bundiga: Small balls of grated, seasoned green bananas cooked in coconut milk with fish. The balls give this dish a heavier consistency than hudut.

Darasa: The darasa is a meatless dish that looks like tamales and is made out of grated green bananas and coconut milk. It is lightly spiced and wrapped and cooked in plantain leaves. Vern’s serves it with fish or stew chicken on the side.

Tapou: Green bananas sliced and cut into wedges, simmered in coconut milk with fish, herbs, and seasoning.

erna “Vern” Marin’s success as a restaurateur did not just appear out of thin air; it’s built on a family legacy of hard work. Every Saturday, at just eight years old, when there was no road on the Peninsula, she and her grandmother would walk along the beach in the hot sun to Placencia Village to wash clothes for a few paying Placencia families. There was no running water or electricity then, so they would have to visit the wells with buckets to fetch water, which her grandmother Petrona “Miss Petty” Moreira would use to wash clothes by hand. Vern would pin the wet garments on the clothes line and also scrub the homes of these families. When they were finished, they would walk their tired feet back home. And today, the 48-year-old business woman wakes up seven mornings a week at 3:30 to prepare for her patrons at Vern’s Kitchen in Seine Bight Village. She usually works straight through the day, taking no breaks and closes at 9 p.m. Verna doesn’t view her operation and hard work as just business, but as a social commitment to her community and culture.

“It was embarrassing that there was no restaurant serving Garifuna food in Seine Bight,” she recalls. “I saved my money and opened a small kitchen.” That kitchen has since expanded to a restaurant with six tables and aside from providing a service to her community, it is becoming a popular cultural attraction on the Placencia Peninsula attracting both locals and visitors. Verna was born and raised in Seine Bight Village, and was taught how to cook traditional Garifuna fare by her mother Helen Moreira (deceased 1989), who was a popular cook on the Peninsula. At 16 years old, Verna assisted her mother in the kitchen at a temporary British Army camp set up in Placencia Village. In her 20s, she collected a wealth of experience as a waitress working at Kingfisher Restaurant in Placencia Village, Tropical Paradise Restaurant in Caye Caulker and Convention Hotel in Belmopan. She credits her venturing off the Peninsula to youthful curiosity and a yearning for adventure and new experiences. She values the relationships she built with her colleagues.

Not long after Verna had opened her small kitchen in Seine Bight, personal circumstances had forced her to close, and she moved to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, home of her only child and granddaughter and where Vern’s Kitchen became a favorite among San Pedranos and tourists during its nine years of operation. Vern’s menu was solid, and she discovered a renewed sense of confidence. Determined to keep her commitment to her community and for the “love of her people and her village,” she returned to Seine Bight in 2010 and reopened. “I felt strong,” she remembers. And strength is what she needs. When Verna wakes up before the crack of dawn, she begins to prepare her Johnny cakes and Creole bread. Please see Vern’s Kitchen on page 9.

APRIL 2012

The work behind the scenes under the management of RG will never go unnoticed. The Staff Kitchen at Robert’s Grove requires constant attention to make sure that employees are fed nutritious food to time. Our staff looks forward to that warm and tasty cooked meal to revitalize their energy. One staff member who ensures that this is accomplished is Abigail Westby. She exemplifies the work ethic and team spirit that RG embodies. She is a very introverted individual, but is loved by all, thus the title of April 2012 Employee of the Month. Go Abby!!!

Vern’s Kitchen Continued from page 9 On most days when it’s not raining she cooks over the ‘fyah haat’ (fire hearth). At 6 a.m. her faithful assistant Louise Guzman of Seine Bight Village joins her and the two begin to prepare the rest of the day’s menu. It’s no easy task in Vern’s Kitchen. There is constant attention to the oven and the four or five pots simmering on the stove. Each day, Pancho, a gentleman from the village, manually grates 40 to 50 coconuts, which Verna uses to make coconut milk – the essential ingredient in almost every item on her menu. She is constantly on the lookout for fish and never fails to satisfy her customers with her Saturday Hudut. Andrew, another gentleman from Seine Bight cleans her fish. “Without my little staff this would not be possible.” Why work so hard? Why the long hours? Why not choose canned coconut milk to make life easier? “I nuh waan dih cultcha fuh dead (I don’t want the culture to die); it’s for the grandkids and their kids,” said Verna. “This is my life, and I love cooking and baking. It makes me happy ... I like it when people come back again. It motivates me.”

APOLO CALIZ

Teachers from St. John’s Memorial Anglican School celebrate Teacher Appreciation Day on May 8 at small gathering organized by the school’s Parent Teacher Association.

And Verna Marin doesn’t stop with traditional cooking methods. She is sending Louise to Belize City to shop for cloth, which they will use to sew traditional Garifuna dress for the staff. “We push. We push,” said Verna. ▪

Lobsterfest 2012 T-shirt Design Continued from page seven Placing second was a stain-glass styled, digitally-enhanced drawing of a Caribbean spiny lobster and marine friends by Laura Godfrey, owner of Placencia Office Supply. Coming in third was The Shak Proprietor Magda Morales’ water colour painting of a fisherman throwing his lobster catch into a dorey. Fourth place went to Beverly Cabral’s digital image of a grayscale lobster overlaid with a bold catch phrase reading “Bring it!”Placing fifth was Isabelle “Matea” Fleisch’s painting, reminiscent of archaic Native American art, of a red lobster on a black background surrounded by a wavy caramel coloured border. The Placencia BTIA would like to thank all these talented artists for taking the time to participate in our t-shirt design competition! Grayson and Omar received a $200 cash prize courtesy of the Placencia BTIA. We look forward to seeing everyone sporting the Sierras’ design on our Lobsterfest t-shirts, which will be available for sale at the Placencia Tourism Center and at the grand event on June 22, 23 and 24 in Placencia Village. ▪

Eat, Drink and Dive Into the Live Music Scene at De Viners By Lynn Upham Contributing Writer

hen you’re walking along the beach front in Placencia Village, that gentle wafting scent of incense between Julia’s Guest House and the Tipsy Tuna Sports Bar will lead you to an inviting Bohemian wooden deck decorated with a disco mirrored Buddha and a comfy Indonesian covered bed. With neighboring businesses offering Belizean, Caribbean and American favorites, the owners of De Viner’s Beach Bar have added to Placencia’s signature culinary diversity with a menu serving English pub-style grub. You can have your fancy fish and chips, home-made sausages, shepherd’s pie, a scotch egg, or stray a little and have Devine chicken wings and bruschetta. Hot and fancy a swim? The bar has a convenient fresh shower for anyone who goes for a cooling dip in the sea. Walk in and see Kareem, the bartender with his dazzling grin, handing over a signature “Front – Bottom” drink … and sink into the only padded beach bar seats on the strip. Earlier this year the drummer from the Grateful Dead, Bill Kreutzmann played on De Viner’s stage, which is backdropped by wall art painted by popular visiting English artist Boyarde Messenger.

The restaurant/bar/concert hall also serves as a venue for private family parties, weddings, or any moderate gatherings for up to 100 people. Guests at a recent private birthday party played beach games just off the stage along the water’s edge, and caused a riot of laughter with Twister and Limbo on the deck. De Viners also promote local visual artists displaying choice artwork for sale on the walls in their indoor lounge area where musicians play when a light shower hinders performances on the deck stage. The lounge features a comfortable nook in one back corner where a small group can snuggle up and chat or take pictures beneath the gold De Viners sign. The exotic assortment of artwork and décor reflect John and Kim’s former past working in the fashion industry in London. John and Kim have carefully crafted all the cozy little details that present a more laidback atmosphere than the larger bars. Hand-carved and cushioned chairs along the bar will not only make guests feel like royalty, but can make it hard for them to leave. Guests will also appreciate the thoughtful hooks underneath the bar for pocket books. Drinks range from dirty martinis to margaritas and of course, icy cold Belikin beer. For a surprisingly delightful treat, try John’s Rock-n-Roll Breakfast drink: a delicious chocolate concoction that tends to be a usual for their visiting musicians. Furball Raises Money to Support Placencia Humane Society By Pam Thomas Contributing Writer, seaturtlep@yahoo.com The 2012 Placencia Humane Society Fur Ball fundraiser was a huge success. The very generous gifts of great prizes donated from within the entire country of Belize made this year's event the best ever! We were blown away by the huge support of PHS through those donated prizes. Placencia Humane Society would like to thank everyone who donated prizes, bought raffle tickets, worked hours upon hours setting up, and, most importantly, Barefoot Bar for offering of such a great venue, and for their generous donation to the Placencia Humane Society. Thanks to the entire staff for tending to the party animals. Job well done! rd

The volunteers who also made the 3 annual Furball a smashing success were Penny Dial, Cindy Weller, Kim Yount, Doran Yount, Shannon Romero, Adriane Vernon, Judy Kosanovich, John (buy my tickets) Kosanovich, Candy Powers, Bob (DJ) Thomas, Pam Thomas, Lisa Macias and Kristina Morgan. Without these volunteers, the Furball would not have been possible.

BOB THOMAS

Peninsula Citizens for Sustainable Development Director Adrian Vernon assists with the Furball raffle alongside PHS Treasurer Candy Powers at Barefoot Bar.

Then there was the fantastic music to move your feet. Graham and Fred brought on some great tunes and were kind enough to share the microphone for DJ Bob to announce all those prize winners. They were awesome. We even caught a few of those party animals on the dance floor! What a great and fun time was had by all. This year’s event has taken PHS to a new level. It is generous donations and events like this that allows PHS to serve the animals of the entire Peninsula and surrounding communities like, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Independence, Mango Creek, Monkey River and all surrounding areas and cayes in need with sick, abused and abandoned animals. Without the generous donations and support, PHS could not do what PHS does. Congratulations to the winners of the prizes. Many heartfelt thanks to EVERYONE who made this possible! ▪

Placencia Mommy and Baby Take on Recycling Mission By Jolie Pollard PBTIA Executive Director, director@placencia.com It’s no secret. Many recyclables on the Placencia Peninsula make their way to the landfill or the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It’s an unfortunate reality that many people do not realize that improper disposal of these plastics can threaten our environment and create eyesores on our cherished coastlines. But some people are making a difference. Ysela Zabaneh, proprietor of ZTouch Beauty Salon in Placencia Village has transformed an arduous task into a beneficial daily activity. Ysela might seem like just another ordinary mom while she takes her evening strolls along the Placencia sidewalk and road pushing her 18-month-old son in his special toy car, but on closer examination you’ll see large black trash bags trailing from the little driver’s rear end. The two make it a priority to collect as many plastic bottles and containers as they can; baby is the spotter and mom the picker-upper. While the beautician spends most of her day styling, massaging, painting and waxing, this dirty evening job is no big deal. “It’s okay. I wash my hands. I take my gloves if I remember,” said Zabaneh even though she is sometimes attacked by ferocious red fire ants when she’s sorting through the trash piles. Among the plastic recyclables, Zabaneh collects water, soft drink, juice and detergent bottles as well as packaging in all shapes and sizes. They take home up to six large bags of plastic material after each stroll. That’s less plastic to bury at the landfill off the Peninsula and less plastic in our oceans. Zabaneh is not getting paid for her efforts that ultimately reduce the volume of garbage produced on the Peninsula, but her collection is building up points for her nephews attending Belize Elementary School (BES) in Belize City. Last year in September, BES kicked off a school house competition where the house that has collected the most pounds of plastic will be awarded a grand trophy at the end of the school year in June. According to BES Principal Deanna Nisbet, the school is advocating environmental awareness and earning income for their general operations. The program’s partner, Belize City-based Belize Recycling Company, travels to the school every two weeks to pick up the plastics Zabaneh and others have collected then transports the recyclables to their facility just outside the city on the Western Highway. There, said founder Juan-Carlos Dussan, the plastics are sorted and classified according to international specifications then compacted or grinded and shipped to companies in Central America, North America and Asia. These manufacturing companies transform your Placencia recyclables into clothes, new containers and other materials. Zabaneh credits several businesses and individuals in the community for saving their plastic bottles and containers in support of this initiative: De Tatch Restaurant, Seaspray Hotel, Ranguana Lodge, Sweet Potato Restaurant, Wendy’s Restaurant and Bar, Tipsy Tuna Sports Bar, Elsie Leslie, Denyse’s Originals, Wood Carvers Melissa and Tyrone, George and Lisa Westby of Westwind Hotel, Alvin Neal, Doran Yount of Doran’s Services, Tony Pinder of Tony’s Gym, Ritchies’ Bus Service and Siripohn Thakham of Siripohn’s Thai Massage. If you would like to help Ysela, save your plastic bottles and containers and let her know where she can retrieve them, or simply bag up the recyclables and throw them over her backyard fence at Z-Touch. ▪

BELIZE RECYCLING COMPANY

Plastic recyclables like these bottles are compacted at a recycling facility on the Western Highway and shipped off around the world to manufacturing companies.

JOLIE POLLARD

It takes a mom, a toddler and a toy car to collect up to six trash bags of plastic recyclables in Placencia Village on each evening stroll.

Placencia Launches Optimist Sailing Club By Jolie Pollard PBTIA Director, director@placencia.com Placencia received a large group of sailing enthusiasts on Sunday, May 6 at the official launching of the Placencia Optimist Sailing Club held on the beach in front of South Waters Resort. The Club is open to youths up to age 15 and according to local organizer Alvin “Tuso” Cabral, 12 Placencia youths have already expressed interest in joining and more are welcome. At the official launching, young experienced sailors and instructors from the Belize Sailing Association (BzSA) in Belize City accompanied aspiring Placencia sailors as they took the small optimist dinghies out to the calm Placencia harbour. “This is good for the community. It is good for the kids. We would like everyone to support. We want parents and other villagers to come out and help them practice,” said Mr. Cabral. Annual membership only costs youths $25. And adults who want to assist in the initiative pay a $50 annual membership fee. According to the BzSA, the parent body of the club, it costs $200 to support the instruction of each young sailor for the year and each optimist dinghy costs $3,500. Mr. Cabral said that he would like to see at least 10 dinghies in Placencia. Thanks to generous local donors, the Placencia Optimist Sailing Club has already received sponsorship for three dinghies totaling a contribution of $10,500. These sponsors include Paul and Gail Petit, Paul Hagopian and Salvador and Gillian Zabaneh. Secretary of the BzSA Alan Usher, said the Optimist Sailing Club is an exciting opportunity for Placencia youths to participate in international competitions. This October, prepared sailors will be traveling to Valle de Bravo, Mexico for the Optimist North American Championship, but it will take some time and instruction for new Placencia members to reach the level necessary for competition. According to Usher, because of the Belize Sailing Association’s full membership in the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), members in Belize including youths in the Placencia Club can enter any competition in the world.

The Placencia Breeze/ MUZAMANZIE PHOTOGRAPHY

Seven-year-old Victor Zabaneh tests his sailing skills on an optimist dinghy, which was sponsored by Belize Telemedia Limited.

Placencia is the most recent addition to the BzSA whose other members include clubs in Belize City, Belmopan, Corozal, Caye Caulker, Honey Camp Lagoon and San Pedro, Ambergris. The Optimist program, launched a year ago with 26 racecertified boats, now has over one hundred boys and girls, ages up to 15 years, learning to sail.

The BzSA supports seven regattas annually and has lodged with the ISAF its long term plan for support under the International Optimist Class solidarity program to enter the Olympics in the year 2016 with the Laser Standard and Radial, 2020 with crewed sailboats, and 2024 with multihulls. To support the newly launched Placencia Optimist Club with sponsorship or supervision and instruction, contact local organizers Alvin and Maria Cabral at 620-7320 or at southwatersresort@yahoo.com. Boat sponsors receive their individual or business name/logo on the side of the boat. Other sponsorship opportunities: Placencia Optimist Sailing Club is in need of the following items needed for participants ranging from ages 8 to 15. New or used in good condition are accepted. • • • •

Life jackets (preferably waistcoat styles.) Short finger sailing gloves Water booties or water shoes Optimist Club training sails

Please contact the club’s organizers for more details on these items.

Efforts Underway to Connect Restaurants With Farmers By Lyra Spang PhD Candidate, Food Anthropology, lyraspang@yahoo.com Stann Creek District farmers produce a lot of food – but more of it could make its way to our Peninsula. A project which began in 2011 is trying to do just that. It is a major combined effort, which links farmers, vendors and local restaurants – and involves cooperation from the Belize Ministry of Agriculture, Stann Creek Agricultural Extension agents, Peninsula chefs and restaurant managers, Indiana University’s Food Studies Program and Department of Anthropology, the Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association and the Peninsula Citizens for Sustainable Development. This project is not without precedent in the Stann Creek District: a successful farm-to-restaurant initiative exists in Hopkins where micro-farmers supply several restaurants with specialty products for the tourism market. To kick off the initiative, Stann Creek Extension Agents and representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture recently met with farmers within a 30-mile radius of the Placencia Peninsula and determined that farmers in Red Bank and Santa Rosa Villages are especially eager to participate in the Placencia food market. They compiled a list of products currently grown in Stann Creek for comparison with lists of products regularly used by restaurants on the Peninsula. The Ministry of Agriculture and local chefs are also investigating specialty products that Stann Creek farmers can produce. The next step of the project will tentatively take place Monday, 2nd July 2012, when farmers from Red Bank and Santa Rosa will visit the Peninsula to meet chefs, tour restaurant kitchens and observe local restaurant operations. The purpose of this visit is to allow restaurant operators and chefs to demonstrate the type and quality of goods they need, and to provide farmers with information on how their products will be used. Farmers will then display samples of products at a meeting location (to be determined) in downtown Placencia so that interested persons can see what products are available and speak with the farmers directly. We hope to see everyone out to take advantage of this opportunity to buy local and support our Stann Creek farmers. Interested produce vendors, chefs and restaurant managers will also have the opportunity to visit local farm operations at a future date. For further information or to get involved in the project, contact current project coordinators, Dr. Richard Wilk of Indiana University (wilkr@indiana.edu), Lyra Spang, a doctoral candidate at the University of Indiana (lyraspang@yahoo.com or 664-8699) or Fernando Tzib of the Belize Ministry of Agriculture (sukunmayaworld@hotmail.com). Special thanks to participating restaurants in our previous meetings: De Tatch, Singing Sands, Rumfish y Vino and Robert’s Grove. We hope to hear from more restaurants! ▪

Rotary Club of Placencia News April saw Bingo continuing for the Rotary Club of Placencia, continued planning and work on ongoing projects, a Fireside, preparations for the new Rotary Year (beginning July 1, 2012), and the induction of a new member. BINGO The Bingo games continued in April with many lucky winners, but, no one winning the progressive jackpot. On April 12, an enthusiastic crowd gathered for a chance to win over $3000 in the progressive jackpot game and the winners were Keith (2 time winner), Therese, Suzie (4 time winner), Sonny (split pot with Suzie), Kim, and Dickie. The winner of the jackpot game was Celia who, despite not winning the big prize, still walked away with a nice pot. On April 26, a large crowd gathered for a chance at the big money. Unfortunately, the list of winners was misplaced, but, we can tell you that Ivan was a big winner (3 times in the regular games). The jackpot game winner was, of course the way the evening went, Ivan who, despite 58 numbers being called for the progressive jackpot, did not cash in on the big prize, but still won a nice pot. Yet another large, enthusiastic crowd filled J-Dees for another shot at the big jackpot. The lucky winners were Cheryl, Dave, Ally, Danny (2 time winner), Therese, Danny and Dave (split pot), Celia, and Denis. The progressive jackpot, despite 61 numbers being called, was still not won, but, Theresa and Demintri split a pot of $250. Bingo will be held every 2 weeks from this point on (instead of the 1st and 3rd Thursdays), so, mark your calendars to make sure you don’t miss out on a chance to win the big money. Several changes are being contemplated in an effort to make the games more fun and give more people a better chance to win, so, please come out and play to see what we have in store for you. As always, we wish to thank all that come out to play and support their community and we wish to give special thanks to Kathy Anglin for calling the games and J-Dees for providing an excellent venue. DEFIBRILLATOR The proceeds from several of the latest Bingo games have been designated for the purchase of a much needed defibrillator for the Clinic and we are very close to our goal to purchase one with several sets of spare electrodes. Thanks to the extreme generosity of Marcus S. Betts, AIBD of Hood River, Oregon, USA, who donated a defibrillator through our Club, the Village will have 2 when our Club’s purchase is completed. These devices can make the difference between life and death and we are hoping that more will be donated or purchased in the future. Donations like this from people like Mr. Betts all help make our community a better and safer place and we wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Betts for his donation. NEW MEMBER For the past few months, we have had the pleasure of working with Lynn Ann Snellman, who has generously volunteered her time to help out with many of our projects. Early in April, on her birthday (we won’t say which one), we had the extreme pleasure of inducting Lynn Ann as a member of the Rotary Club of Placencia. Her involvement in the past has been a tremendous help on various projects and we look forward to working with her more in the future. Members like Lynn Ann make the work we do possible and we hope that more members of the community will step forward and join us in making this beautiful place we live the best it can be. FIRESIDE April 28 saw a group of Placencia Rotarians and their spouses and guests boarding boats for our latest Fireside (Rotary parties that are generally held 4 times every Rotary Year) at Ivan Leslie, Jr.’s beautiful caye. The day, as always, featured good food and great company with the added bonuses of a nice boat ride out and back and some excellent snorkeling right off the caye. We wish to thank Ivan for hosting the party and providing transportation to the caye as well as Harald Wallen and Sonny Vernon for also transporting us out and back. These parties are always a good time to enjoy each other’s company, reflect on the good things we have tried to accomplish, and talk about plans for the future in a relaxed, informal setting. PAINTING Saturday May 12 saw a group of Rotarians and volunteers gather to paint the firehouse and the fence at the cemetery. We are pleased to announce that, despite some touch up work being required, both of these projects are essentially completed. We wish to thank the Rotarians that showed up to work and Kathy, Lynn. Dick and Lynn (yes there were 2) for their help.

UPCOMING/ONGOING We have many projects of varying sizes in the works and expect to complete many of them in the near future as funding has been obtained for additional work at the St. Alphonsus preschool in Seine Bight and the construction of picnic tables and benches for the ball field and on the beach, as well as several other projects. Our next big event will be the Annual Senior Lunch to be held in May, as we gather senior citizens from Seine Bight and Placencia to honor them for all that they mean to our community, serve them lunch, and provide them with an opportunity to visit with old friends and make new friends. This has become one of our Club’s favorite events and we look forward to it every year. Lydia Villanueva and Maretha McCullock have been hard at work planning this event and we have no doubt that this one will be the best yet. OUR CLUB Every year at this time, we begin to try to wrap up as much as possible from the Rotary Year (which runs from July to July) and begin planning for the new Rotary Year, which will begin on June 30 with the Handing Over Ceremony to be held at Laru Beya. Outgoing President Steve Wade, his officers (Suzan Riegal, Secretary and Sandra Steele, Treasurer) and his Board of Directors (Director of Club Administration Wanda Stakutis, Director of Service Projects and President Elect (2012-2013) Jim Weller, Director of Membership Harald Wallen, Director of Rotary Foundation Bob Edmunds, Past President Lydia Villanueva, and Director of Public Relations Greg Valiton) will hand over the Club operation to incoming President Jim Weller, his officers (Wanda Stakutis, Secretary and Sandra Steele, Treasurer) and his Board of Directors (Director of Club Administration Wanda Stakutis, Director of Membership Sonny Vernon, Director of Rotary Foundation and Past President Steve Wade, and Director of Service Projects and President Elect (2013-2014) Greg Valiton). We look forward to another successful year and, as always, will try to make the next year better than the last. Our Club currently has 20 members and we are always seeking new members that want to give back to their community as part of a group of great people. We work hard at times to get things done, but the fun we have working together and the sense of satisfaction we receive from helping out and giving back makes it all worth it. If experiencing this satisfaction appeals to you, please consider attending one of our meetings (Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. at Yoli’s, lunch is $10) to see what is happening, what is planned, and how you can help. ▪

Placencia Assassins: PLB Champions Defeat Police United 3-2 and Bash it Up With Fans at Home By Jolie Pollard PBTIA Director, director@placencia.com When we boast that Placencia is the best tourism destination in Belize, we may hear some arguments from San Pedro and Cayo, but one thing is certain: we are number one in football. On Saturday night, May 12, Placencia fans rocked the FFB Stadium in Belmopan when the Assassins clinched their place in the record books with a 1-1 draw against Police United. It was all the Assassins needed to win after a 2-1 Victory in the first game of the finals played at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence Village the previous Saturday night. The Assassins were presented individual championship medals, a trophy and a cheque for $25,000 from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. The Assassins also scored big with Team Captain Dalton Eiley being named the Premier League of Belize (PLB) Most Valuable Player. As is Placencia custom, people partied hard. The following week the team paraded through Placencia Village on a truck booming their special victory song written by local tour guide Harry Neal with faithful fans dancing behind. The party continued at the Tipsy Tuna Sports Bar where fans collected t-shirt autographs from all their favorite players. Team Coach David “Rat” Torres opened the celebration with a short prayer: “Lord, continue to bless this Placencia Assassins team and the country of Belize” followed with a “One, two, three – ASSASSINS!!!” Reacting to the victory, team fan Ardie Young was busy getting her t-shirt signed when she said, “We produce the best. We expect nothing less from our boys.”

tion as it was formed after a break away from the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) who led the Belize Premier Football League (BPFL). But this year, for any doubters, the Assassins proved themselves as the legitimate football champions of Belize by fighting tooth and nail for the first place trophy in the first ever PLB football tournament, the officially sanctioned football tournament by the FFB and the result of a merger of the BPFL and the Super League. Ferrell said he is proud to say that none of his players are getting paid. “They make a huge sacrifice to become champions.” The team manager also shared the reason for their win. “Even though we have players from Independence, they are related to our players. They know each other from kids. Family is the essence of our success. I really believe that.” Assistant Manager Charles Westby also thanked sponsorship. “This team relies on community support and businesses. We really have to express our appreciation to everybody who helped us this season.”

Placencia Assassins MVP Dalton Eiley rides atop the truck in the parade and fan Jacob “Dooby” Malcom hangs on.

The Placencia Assassins thank Re/ Max, Placencia Waterboard, Placencia Village Council, Hatchet Caye, Ranguana Lodge, Tipsy Tuna Sports Bar, Cozy Corner Hotel Beach Bar and Grill, Sea Spray Hotel, Pickled Parrott Bar and Grill, Omar’s Diner, De Tatch Restaurant and Bar, EMM and all other sponsors for supporting the team. ▪

Team Captain Dalton Eiley, who has been representing Placencia in tournaments for the past five years, said he didn’t expect to be named MVP. “I feel honoured, but I don’t think I deserved this. I got injured. My players work fuh mek I get dis (worked for me to get this).” The humble champion continued: “Coach push we farthest we could go. Without our coach pushing us to our limit, we wouldn’t reach the championship … Lot of long nights,” recalled Eiley. As for the feelings he has for his fans, “Nothing but love. They’ve been with us through thick and thin. They never leave our side. You’ve never seen fans like Placencia fans.” Placencia Assassins Manager and Part-Owner Dean Ferrell was also gleaming like everyone else on celebration night. “It feels special. Two different leagues. Champions in both. First team to accomplish that feat,” recounted Ferrell. For the second year in a row, the Placencia Assassins have fought their way to the championship title. In 2011 the Assassins won the Super League of Belize Tournament – regarded by some football enthusiasts as a renegade competi-

♫ Behind the Placencia Assassins Victory Song ♫ Local tour guide and now song writer, Harry Neal said he recorded “What a Brave Police Squad” just before the championship game with United Police. “I predicted we mih wah be (would have been) victorious,” said Neal. “I wanted to develop something to intimidate the police dem.” Neal said it only took him 45 minutes to write the catchy track. He texted the lyrics to team player Byron “Bomb Squad” Ferrell who is also a disc jockey. “Because they (Police United) were league leaders, they were overconfident,” explained Neal. “They were acting like champion before they were champions.”

JOLIE POLLARD

Left to Right: Team Manager Dean Ferrell, Assistant Manager Charles Westby, Assistant Coach Venancio and Coach David “Rat” Torres celebrate the end of hard work.

The popular chorus of the song goes: “What a brave police squad. First dem happy, now dem sad. (First they are happy now they are sad.) Staat feel good just fuh feel bad. (Start off feeling good just to feel bad.)” Another part of the song also pokes fun at a national sports writer who had predicted the Assassins’ loss in one of his articles. “Statsman claim BDF mih wah win (would’ve won)… if you cyaant (can’t) beat, den (then) join Assassins.” Neal said he enjoyed how much the fans appreciated the track, but noted that he didn’t write the song for publicity. “I do it as a haadcore fan.” ▪ Despite the loss against the Police United, Placencia Police Sergeant Benguche still wore his Assassins Champions shirt with pride.
