Avery Thomas wins Miss Garifuna Pageant in Seine Bight Avery Thomas has proven that she has what it takes to be the Peninsula’s ambassador for Garifuna culture.

Thomas was chosen as Seine Bight’s new Miss Garifuna at the village pageant on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Seine Bight Cultural and Community Center. She will join other “Miss Garifunas” competing in the National Miss Garifuna Pageant in Belize City on November 3.

Placencia Offers Ideal Location for Marathon and Half Marathon The paving of the Placencia road continues to prove its advantages. While it has done wonders for infrastructural development, trade and commerce and travel convenience, it has also allowed more people to appreciate the scenic route of the Peninsula, especially those on foot.

When the idea came to mind to plan a marathon to support social needs on the Peninsula, he completed a full 18-mile-test run by himself in March 2012. “I had planted bottled water at every mile. I figured, ‘If someone in his 60s can do this then this can definitely work,’” recalled Lovett.

Mesmerized with the beauty of the Placencia Peninsula, chemistry professor and avid runner, Chip Lovett became convinced that Placencia would be an excellent location to join the growing number of destination marathons in the world.

He immediately began networking on the Peninsula to plan the event. In just a few months, Lovett created a website: www.runbelize.org, which provides general information on the marathons including a course map, preparation advice and an online registration form.

With just a short length of time to advertise, a total of 40 runners from various locations in United States have registered. But what has surprised and really impressed Lovett, is the overwhelming interest shown by runners from all over Belize.

“Some marathon courses can be really convoluted,” explained Lovett, “but Placencia is perfect. It is simple, the road is flat, and it offers the most beautiful view of the mountains, the lagoon, the beach and village life.”

Rules: The minimum age for entry is 18 for the marathon and 16 for the half marathon Course: The 26.2 mile marathon course begins at the Placencia Village football field near the south end of the Peninsula, goes through Placencia Village, Seine Bight Village, and Maya Beach, with multiple views of the Caribbean Sea along the way. The course then loops back a few miles south of Riversdale. The 13.1 mile half marathon course begins at the marathon turnaround and both races finish in Placencia Village. There will be water stations at about every mile. The course is completely flat.

Belize Triathlon Association Giovanni Alamilla and even a teacher from Belize High School in Belize City who is bringing a group of students to participate. Several participants volunteered to assist Lovett with recruiting other runners.

Lovett is confident that this marathon/half marathon will serve as a springboard for a much larger Peninsula attraction in 2013. “With these destination marathons, people look for comments on previous runs and pictures. We’ll be able to advertise earlier and market to more people for the next one,” said Lovett.

Proceeds from the event will benefit various charitable needs on the Placencia Peninsula.

This was their talent portion for the night, and the confident contestants demonstrated cooking, washing, lighting the fire hearth, beating plantain, picking oranges and fishing all while shaking their hips, moving their arms and shuffling their feet.

Meet Me in the Alley at Jaguar Lanes!

J

ust a few months ago J. Lindsey Short decided to buy Jaguar Lanes, the Placencia Peninsula’s one and only bowling alley. But why did this vacation-home owner decide he wanted to own a bowling alley in Belize of all things? Simply put, he wanted to give back to the community. …and what better way than to provide adults, kids, locals and vacationers alike a place to hang out and have some good, clean fun?

He has enlisted the help of long-time Placencia expatriates Bob and Pam Thomas to manage the alley along with providing some great renovations to the facilities. Among the changes are a kitchen expansion project and the recent additions to the building’s outdoor seating area. Delphina, formerly the cook at De Lite Café, is manning the growing kitchen serving up a variety of “alley food,” as Bob refers to it. This includes burgers and desserts all for under $20. Also on the menu are draft beer, “Pam’s Famous BBQ Pulled Pork” and ice cream sandwiches made from homemade cookies and vanilla

ice cream. Ask any of the alley’s many regular players and they will tell you that you can not go wrong with anything on the menu.

Despite the expanding menu and dining facilities, Bob assures everyone that Jaguar Lanes is “still a bowling alley” with four lanes, rental shoes, and good, old-fashioned, pen and paper score keeping.

Do not let the manual scoring scare you though.

Bob will happily explain how it works and once you have tried it, you will agree that whilst bowling in paradise, tallying your own score is part of the fun and charm.

Also part of the fun are league nights. When asked why she bowls in the women’s and couple’s leagues, Nora Myers replied that it “is a fun indoor activity (and there’s always AC) and it’s so different from anything else we can do here and the people are so much fun to hang out with.” For those that are not ready to commit to league play, there is always the open bowling nights.

New Placencia resident Dawn Walton recalls her first time bowling in the alley excitedly stating that “They even gave me a “handicap” – my first!” (Jaguar Lanes uses a handicapping system to equalize its bowler’s skill levels offering beginner and experienced bowlers equal opportunity for bowling glory.)

Also, new adventures Bob and Pam are beginning to offer at the bowling alley, are birthday parties and private events like October’s Cosmic “BOO” Bowling.

INTER-OFFICE FIVE-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT Continued from page one.

Placencia successfully hosted its first fully-organized interoffice football competition. Organizers managed to recruit eight teams from the Peninsula to compete in the fierce tournament. Teams represented The Moorings, Wallen’s Hardware, Barefoot Bar, Placencia Office Supply, Tropic Air, Turtle Inn and Sanitation (Water Board). “Veterans Over 35,” a team comprised of more mature football players, was allowed to join in for the fun.

Lead Organizer Selvin “Sello” Monteroso was pleased with the tournament’s large following and success. “It feels nice to see all the support and people coming out,” said Monteroso the night after the championship game. “It has been a lot of work.”

Monteroso and fellow organizers Steven “Pele” Lopez, Charles Westby, Harry Neal, Conrad and Villanueva started planning the tournament in August. They held small fundraisers and solicited a few donations to buy trophies, medals and to rent chairs for the games. “Raising funds was the biggest challenge,” said Monteroso.

The games were held at the Placencia Village Sports Complex every Friday night starting on Aug. 24. The tournament brightened up the village during the “off” season and provided fun family entertainment. “We’ll definitely have it again next year ," said Monteroso.

“We’re trying to organize a sports committee that will bring provide more opportunities for localized competitions like these.

We want to include more sports, not just football.”

Edwin Alvarado on Becoming Chef at Francis Ford Coppola’s Turtle Inn

F

rancis Ford Coppola is famous around the world for his films, and the popularity of his wines is soaring too. In our area, he’s probably better known for his fine resorts, Turtle Inn in Placencia Village and Blancaneaux Lodge in Cayo. Both consistently rank the top 10 lists for best resorts in Central America and their hard working and well-trained employees play a pivotal role in maintaining those rankings.

In December 2011, while Coppola was dining with his family around a large table at Turtle Inn’s Mare Restaurant, he requested to try every item on the menu. Twenty-six-year-old Chef Edwin Alvarado carefully supervised his kitchen staff and was sure to sample every dish before they were delivered to the big boss. Coppola, known to be a very discerning food critic at his resorts, later informed the chef that everything was excellent and that the young man had a long future ahead of him.

This meant the world to Alvarado. The married father of two had travelled a long and arduous journey overcoming many obstacles to reach this point in his culinary career. Alvarado was born in Guatemala and at two years old, he moved with his family to the tiny rural village of El Progresso located on

the rustic back roads of the Mountain Pine Ridge of Cayo. After he completed primary school, he chose to work instead of continuing on to high school, which was a long and bumpy bus ride away from El Progresso. His first job was serving gelato from the Janus Foundation’s gelato truck. Janus Foundation was a non-profit German/Swiss company, which operated various small enterprises on its Maya Ranch in the Pine Ridge. Alvarado was moved from the gelato truck to the bakery where he started cleaning then quickly moved up to Head Baker in less than two years. He was now making the gelato too. This experience at Janus would set the stage for the rest of his career.

however, this was his first time being away from his wife and children in El Progresso. Like many who work in the Placencia resort industry, he worked 12 straight days in Placencia before being allowed to take four days off to be with his family. “It was hard at first, but I began to adapt,” he recalled.

Due to financial troubles, the Janus Foundation closed its doors and Alvarado decided to enroll in the Belize Tourism Board’s tour guide course. He only had three internships and a CPR course to complete when a chef who had trained him at Janus hired him to work at Cahal Pech Resort in San Ignacio, Cayo. While at Cahal Pech, Alvarado’s uncle called him from Turtle Inn and informed him about a vacancy in the resort’s gardens.

He started at the appetizer and salad station and very soon he was at every station trying to learn as much as he could. “I was so excited. This was my dream,” said Alvarado. He especially enjoyed learning how to prepare the Italian dishes.

Alvarado grew up in a farming family and was eager to work in the organic gardens at Turtle Inn;

Then, Alvarado’s healthy connections at Janus opened another door of opportunity for him. Janus’ sous chef was now working as Turtle Inn’s head chef. “What are you doing in the gardens? You should be in the kitchen. You’re very good at baking,” the Swiss chef told him. “If you train me, I’ll go for it,” responded Alvarado.

As a young cook, he trained under various chefs during his time at Turtle Inn and formed very close bonds. He still communicates with one of his mentor chefs, Italian, Mario Carlino who told him after Please see Chef Alvarado, pg. 14

Placencia Opens First Seaweed Processing Plant

The Placencia Producers Cooperative Society Ltd (PPCSL) established in 1962, held the grand opening of their new seaweed processing facility and offices on 23 October 2012. The project aims tor educe pressure off of traditional commercial species by farming seaweed in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. Funding that made this possible was from the United Nations Development Programme/Global Environment Facility Small Grants Pr gramme/ Community Management of Protected Areas Programme (COMPACT), US AID/MAREA and SEA. But Alvarado didn’t always have good working relationships with chefs at Turtle Inn. An unfortunate case resulting from questionable jealousy and ego issues, as is common in many busy kitchens, saw Alvarado’s temporary departure from the resort. The young cook was relieved in a sense and returned to El Progresso where he worked on the farms for four months. But his kitchen reputation wouldn’t allow him to stay in El Progresso for much longer.

so impressed with Alvarado’s passion for learning and Italian cuisine that he invited him along on a trip to Italy. In no time, Alvarado had a passport and visa in hand and was on his way in a cab from New York to New Jersey where he met Coppola on his private jet. “My nerves were getting hype,” recalled Alvarado.

In Italy, Alavarado stayed at Coppola’s newest resort called Palazzo Margherita located in Bernalda, a small hilltop town 125 miles from Naples. A room located right next to the kitchen had been reserved for him. He quickly connected with the kitchen staff at the hotel, and they were surprised at the bits of Italian language he had picked up during his mentorships at Turtle Inn. They were also impressed with his knowledge of Italian cooking and found it intriguing that in a small village called Placencia far away from Bernalda, people knew their cuisine.

The highlight of Alvarado’s trip to Italy was discovering new flavors and foods.

He enjoyed a ragu made with horse meat purchased from the local meat shop. A dish made with lamb brains wrapped up in lamb intestines made such an impression on his taste buds. He made sausage under the tutelage of elderly women in the town and learned how to make fresh mozzarella cheese at a farm. He cut fragrant herbs and grapes in the gardens and tried figs for the first time.

He was asked to lead the team at a small restaurant in Caye Caulker where he implemented helpful changes, after which he took another job in the kitchen at the new Bella Maya Resort in Placencia.

After Coppola recognized the talent that existed in his kitchen at Turtle Inn that night in December, he began to take special interest in Alvarado’s culinary skills. Coppola would e-mail Alvarado new recipes to try, and the young chef would expertly create the dishes and deliver pictures of his work. Coppola was

Aspiring Electricians Complete Fundamental Course: Instructor Continues Program As the Placencia Peninsula continues to grow and construction work is on the rise, the need for competent and reliable electricians is paramount. Recognizing an opportunity to develop an educated local workforce, resident leading electrician, Ben Williams successfully implemented his first training course designed to provide the theoretical platform needed before advancing into the field professionally. The program, which wrapped up in October, produced four graduates. They are: Joshlin “Josh” Merwin, David “Rat” Torres, Harold “Boy” Wallen, IV and Ceasar Ortiz. “I am very proud of the initiative they put forward to learn these aspects of electrical training,” said Williams.

About The People’s Coalition of the Placencia Peninsula The People’s Coalition is a citizen’s advisory group established to provide critical and independent advice and support to the Police in order to effectively with the crime situation on the Peninsula.

Rationale:  To work closely with the police to improve the quality and effectiveness of the response to the crime community.  To work with the police and community to enhance police and community relations.  To encourage and assist in the professional development of police officers in the community.  To assist in the development of a peaceful environment for the residents of the Peninsula.

Objectives:  To provide training opportunities for police officers in areas such as community policing, crime scenes, criminal justice and administration.  To assist in securing necessary equipment to enhance the police’s response to crime.  To identify criminal activities that need addressing, e.g., sale of alcohol to minors, drinking in public places, gangs, crimes against children, the elderly, or the community etc.  To coordinate public forums, workshops, seminars to educate the community in areas such as parenting skills, human rights, laws, etc.

Isaac Ritchie, Carlos Villatoro and the PSC crew are making waves in regattas.

On October 14, the Placencia Sailing Club (PSC) travelled to Corozal Town for the Corozal Bay Regatta. PSC junior members, Carla Lopez, Carlos Villatoro, Isaac Ritchie and Richard Chan competed, teammates Tyler Garbutt, Victor Zabaneh, Wilson Riveria, and Clarence Rowland tagged along to cheer them on. The group was accompanied by PSC members Alvin & Maria Cabral, Paul Hagopian, Carol Milnes, Glen and Martha Eiley, Gillian and Salva Zabaneh, Paul and Gail Petit and Jacqueline Ritchie. Needless to say, our Placencia sailors had quite a crowd there to cheer them on!!

U-12 Football Team are 2012 Mundialito Champions The Placencia Young Bombers had another impressive showing in this year’s Mundialito football tournament. They placed first in the under-12 category defeating a team from Independence Village and placed second in the 17 and under category succumbing to another team from Independence. Team Sponsor Wendy Lemus thanked thr Placencia Village Council, Eworth Garbutt, Dalton Eiley and Sandra Steele for assisting with fuel expenses and boat transportation to Independence Village where the tournament was hosted. She also thanked the under- 17 team coach, Selvin “Cello” Monteroso and under 12 coaches, Dean Ferrel and James “Turkey” Augustine. The under-15 team did not place in this year’s tournament.▪

The morning started out with uncooperative weather. It was hot, overcast and there was barely any breeze. Luckily at around 10 a.m. the breeze picked up just enough to start the races. There were six heats in all. There were even some close, nail biting races that the PSC came close to winning! Isaac and Carlos made it to the finals with Carla and Richard finishing the regatta. It was pretty interesting as in the middle of the final race the breeze had come to a full stop! In the end, Isaac got a finalist medal and Carlos got the silver medal! ‘HURRAY.’

All of our sailors did an excellent job representing Placencia and made us very proud. They showed great sportsmanship congratulating the winner of the regatta and impressed quite a few by doing such a great job in a sport they were recently introduced to. In fact, Placencia has done so well since our club was formed that Carlos will be competing in The Nationals in San Pedro on November 18.

Rt. Hon. George Cadle Price

By Emonie Rowland Std. III Student, St. John’s Primary School Hon. George Cadle Price was born on January 15, 1919. He passed away on September 19, 2011 in Belize City. He was the first Prime Minister of Belize. He is referred to as the Father of the Nation.

George Price was a very humble man. He was kind and friendly to everyone he met. He never forgot a face or name. The welfare of the people of Belize was his first priority. The first thing Mr. Price would do when he met someone was to ask about that person’s family.

George Price was a co-founder of the people’s united party (PUP). He served as Prime Minister of this nation for four decades as leader of that political party. Because of his mannerism, humble personality and his generosity he will be missed by the entire nation of Belize. He was a very good prime minister and leader of the country. According to Prime Minister Barrow Belize will never have another Prime Minister like Mr. Price.

Students Compete in George Price Essay Contest For September 21, 2011, to commemorate Belize’s 31 st year of Independence, the Placencia Village Council (PVC) commissioned an essay contest for the upper level primary school students of St. John’s Memorial Anglican Primary School in Placencia Village. The theme of the essay was “The Father of the Nation – Honorable George Cadle Price.” The PVC wanted the students to write an essay from a personal point of view and what they know about George Cadle Price. First place winner, Emonie Rowland received a $100 cash prize, second place winner, Giovanna DeAngeles received a $75 cash prize and third place winner Marlon DeLacrus received $50. ▪

Placencia Mooring Masters Update October 2012

By Marion Carr PMM Coordinator, muzamanzie@gmail.com As the tourism season approaches, PMM is preparing to get maintenance and overhaul of anchor mooring buoys installed under the project. The component parts are expensive as they have to be shipped in from the United States. The hardware, like shackles and thimbles, are not only difficult to source locally, but they are expensive as well. This is why as a voluntary non-profit community organization, we rely on donations and funds raised through PMM fundraising merchandise like tshirts, wristbands and dive mask slap straps.

One of our biggest sources of operating funds comes via California Friends of PMM, a small group of fans of PMM's work to help protect our reef from anchor damage. On November 17 California Friends of PMM will be holding their Autumn Fundraiser in San Francisco to benefit PMM. As always, prize packages of two-night hotel stays with meals and tours and massages donated from local businesses have been solicited for the event’s raffle. This totally awesome raffle includes two island adventures and two Placencia-based prize packages.

PHS Shares Update on No Name’s Recovery

By Doran Yount Chairman, Placencia Humane Society In the last issue of the Placencia Breeze, we told you the story of “No Name”, an abandoned, starving dog who was discovered by the owners of Danube Restaurant in Seine Bight. The dog had been tied as a puppy and left to grow with the rope getting tighter and tighter around its neck.

The Placencia Humane Society (PHS) have theorized that “No Name” must have cut the rope with its sharp puppy teeth, but spent the next several months before being rescued trying to survive and hunt for food on the streets while struggling with the choking rope. We also believe that many people chose to ignore the dog because of his unpleasant smell due to the infection caused by the rope.

After the PHS rescued “No Name” and immediately removed the rope and treated the dog with the assistance of veterinarians, he was left in the temporary care of Danube owners Herbert Kollmann and Simone Gareis who fed him food and medications.

Since No Name was rescued, he moved into my house where he became friends with another abused dog named Bambi who was rescued in Maya King by some tourists. Bambi served as a mentor to No Name, and he also developed friendships with other animals: Sheba, Sara, Red and Fluffy.

“No Name” was then relocated to a house on the beach where he met other dogs: Buddy, Jackie and Blackie. “No Name” was undergoing a miraculous recovery. He played with the dogs on the beach, running up and down chasing the waves. They would play and roll in the sand all day taking time out for naps and meal times. “No Name” then stayed at my house again for a while and seemed to really enjoy reconnecting with Bambi – his first canine friend.

With Bambi’s influence “No Name” learned to dig in the sand and go crabbing. He seemed to enjoy tasting those land crabs. Then one day, “No Name” met PHS board member local massage therapist, Patricia Celenza. He seemed very trusting of Celenza and they bonded immediately.

It wasn’t much longer before “No Name” had found a new home.

“No Name” met Celenza’s four dogs, and they all go for long walks on the beach. But for all of us at PHS, one of the biggest day’s “No Name’s” recovery phase was going swimming in the sea with the other dogs. This is when we knew for sure that “No Name” had a healthy future ahead of him and pulled a major breakthrough. This dog is experiencing a love that it could’ve only dreamed of during those dark days when he was simply struggling to catch his breath and swallow a morsel of food on the streets. At this time, Celenza is teaching “No Name” how to be on a leash, which isn’t very easy

since he is scared of them, but we are confident that he will happily surrender in due course. “No Name” is also being treated to special doggie massages. The PHS is ecstatic that “No Name” has found his “FUREVER HOME!” Give No Name a new “furever” name! ear PHS members and the Placencia Peninsula Community,

As the time grows near to the end of my first year as the Chairman of Placencia Humane Society (PHS), I felt a need to tell you what we have accomplished and where we wish to go. Most of you know that this current board had no intention to be elected to office. The last election was such a difficult event that the members voted in new people from the community that would turn around the image associated with PHS. We believe we have done that.

In the beginning it was not easy to find any volunteers who wanted to help. Look at all the wonderful people volunteering to help the animals now! There was no transition from the past to present board. We had to figure it out for ourselves. Not only did we, but we had a great time doing it. There is still a long way to go. We now have an accountant willing to donate services to keep the financials in better shape. We have a volunteer keeping inventory and other records.

PHS has been recognized by Humane Society International and is working with this board to help improve our program! We hope to follow in their footsteps using their proven guidelines. They are willing to help us! PHS offered free clinics all year long.

This worked very well as those who could afford gave more donations to cover those who could not afford. We are seeing lots of animals who have not seen a doctor in years. However PHS has been informed by Humane Society International that it should revise its program to focus on free Spay and Neuter programs. After review, we are restructuring that now.

We were requested by the Placencia Village Council (PVC) to help them in the situation of the loose and attacking animals. It has taken us almost a year to come up with a plan and program that was accepted. We have teamed up with the PVC and the Placencia Police Department to address the stray, roaming and biting dogs.

Together, we have come up with a plan. It was a team effort. PHS is now tracking and collecting data on the feral cat population with a tattoo program.

We also are in the process of implementing a micro chip program and have received a donated chip reader! PHS is working with K9. Lifeline on this program. PHS is working with an animal rescue group in Kansas City, Mo. We hope to have the funds donated to acquire our 501-3-C status in the U.S. This allows U.S. Citizens to donate to PHS as a tax deduction. It also opens us up to request grants to promote our programs.

PHS is working to implement an education program in the schools as well. We are in

negotiations with other local organizations to help further the program. A true team effort.

PHS was able to provide Seine Bight with three free clinics this year. After the first clinic with Dr. Baptist, Dr. Lopez and Dr. Roches, PHS quickly realized Seine Bight needed more help than PHS could financially provide. With help from Hopkins Humane Society they put us in touch with PAWS Without Borders. They brought us much needed medicines and supplies to replenish what was used in Seine Bight.

PAWS have requested to come and donate their services for another free Seine Bight clinic in March 2013! Once again, another team effort.

On September 24 & 25 Clara Lee Arnold from Hopkins Humane Society along with Dr. Tina Cone and staff of Collier County Vets Without Borders, Dr. Orlando Baptist, members from San Pedro’s Humane Society, Humane Society International, K9 Lifeline and members of the Placencia Humane Society Volunteer group all volunteered for two days of animal care. Right on their heels coming in on September 28 and 29 were Dr. Barnett along with a team of doctors and technicians from Florida, assisted by Dr. Bennett. teers rose to the occasion and spent another two days of animal care in Seine Bight.

Instead of venturing off the Peninsula we have realized there are many pets that need our help right here on the entire Peninsula.

But we see animals from all around, from Punta Gorda to Belmopan. We hope to get these communities more involved in the future. We at PHS think that partnering with Hopkins Humane Society, San Pedro Humane Society ( SAGA ), Humane Society, International, K9 Lifeline, PAWS and more is the way to progress PHS. With their support, we believe we can continue to promote animal health and humane education programs . With this team effort, we can make a difference.

If you like the direction PHS is taking please help us. Join our TEAM. Become part of a team that wants to work together for the common goal. Become a board member or volunteer. Do you have an expertise? Are you a historian? accountant? store clerk? educator? medical assistant? trapper? anything? Or do you just want to help in any thing you can? Help us research and implement our programs. There are many positions to fill. We need your help. If you can’t help that way, we hope you will support us with your donations. That is how we can do what we do for the animals of the Peninsula. If you like the new positive and fun PHS, become a member, come out and vote for progress on November 23 at our annual meeting.
