Point of View - Salad Days Did you know that the phrase Salad Days is Shakespearean in origin and refers to a youthful time and the enthusiasm that comes with it? I don’t have the youthful part much anymore, but I do have enthusiasm for SALADS this month!

The Secret Garden offers a Greek Salad that is plied with cukes, tomatoes, sweet onion, Greek olives, feta and pepperoncini. It’s all tossed with a traditional Greek dressing that has a hint of oregano to differentiate it from regular vinaigrette. I made an exception to the “no white” plan and gobbled up the pita wedges that came along side.

Inn’s on-site “farm” makes this a true organic experience.

Known for his pizza and sushi, Rick at Rick’s Café really “gets it” about salads, too. The Veggie Salad is that and more, plenty of good greens and different kinds of vegetables according to what’s fresh in the Village on any given day. His Dress for Success on this salad is a A departure from any ho-hum salad, tahini-based creamy delight. I ordered the Organic Salad Nicoise at Turtle Inn. Oh boy, this was a beauty! Kalmata olives, boiled potatoes, string beans, eggs, capers and grilled snapper instead of the traditional tuna. The lime vinaigrette complemented the ingredients…so big I ate it in two sittings. Turtle

I recently vowed to take a break from “white things”…too much bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, and tortillas on my table lately and I feel it. So, I set out the past few weeks to get some GREEN back in my diet and it turns out, it’s easy being green around restaurants in the Village. Dress for Success!

onion and LOTS of beef strips all tossed with a zippy concoction that had chili oil as a base. Excellent!

Iceberg, Green Leaf, and Romaine seem to be the most abundant greens at the heart of local salads. It’s the dressing that kicks up the taste and variety of choices. I recently had The Whole Big Dinner Salad at Mojo, a satisfying plate of lettuce, hard boiled eggs, chicken dressed with a perfect balsamic vinaigrette. The name doesn’t lie! On to The Shak for lunch to devour the Fish Salad. Great chunks of sautéed fish, the usual crunchies, and this time dressed with a Lime Cilantro mixture. This flavor was a perfect go-with for the fish. I could probably drink this dressing! I asked for the most popular salad on the menu at Fusion and was rewarded with the Thai Beef Salad. Translucent strips of cucumber,

PIA Students Learning in the Real World By Loretta Logan

Peninsula International Academy, approaching its 4th year of operation with 62 students is a private Preschool-Std. 6 primary school. PIA offers a learner-centered environment, with rigorous student work focused on a personalized competency-based learning system, which identifies crucial learning outcomes, gives students the instruction and practice they need at their level of readiness, and monitors and adjusts instruction for as long as needed until competency is fully achieved. Reflecting PIA’s commitment to social justice, sustainable development and equity, twenty-four (24%) percent of the

student body is on a scholarship and pay low or no tuition. PIA’s goal is to educate students to become independent thinkers, lifelong learners, to pursue academic excellence and individual achievement, in a context of respect for others and service to the community. This goal is supported by experiential learning and small school design with numerous daily opportunities provided for critical thinking and collaborative work. A critical design element of PIA is that students learn from the real world. In 2015-16 PIA had three major real world projects: the Placencia Village parking lot creation, our first annual Earth Day celebration, and the Sustainability Skit in collaboration with World Wildlife Fund. The sustainability skit reflects the social, economic and environmental implications of development in

Belize. We are constantly reflecting and asking questions about the management and maintenance of our natural heritage, noting that we all have apart to play. These three pillars are used in discussions, writing and project base classes in the middle and upper levels at PIA. Each scene highlights key stakeholders in the village: Jack Young (fisherman extraordinaire), Brenda Muschamp (Culinary), Lydia Villanueva (historical hotelier), Japs (marine farmer), Marine biologist (local NGO), Tour guide, fishermen, among others. The skit is a combination of student’s research, stories and observations. PIA students were

selected to film the skit after making a great impression on Jamal Galvez, Sea to Shore Alliance, at their first earth day event. The filming was lead and edited by 13 productions and sponsored by World Wild Life Fund. https://youtu.be/5UbcJwbxhPQ Other info: Script: Loretta Logan Costume design: Omar Sierra Coordinator: Selena Lucas Sponsors: Alrin Muschamp, Claudia (One World Rental), Jalima Gold All scenes were shot in the village.

What is all this fuss about Lionfish? Most people know by now that Lionfish (Pterois Volitans) are an invasive species in the Caribbean! They are a beautiful fish and do not cause a problem in their native environment where they have natural predators. They are native to the Indo-pacific oceans and the Red sea.

Introducing the Lionfish to the Atlantic and Caribbean has turned out to be one of the cruelest and potentially catastrophic tricks ever played on an ecosystem!

The egg sac contains a chemical deterrent that discourages other fish from eating the eggs. A single Lionfish may reduce the number of juvenile native fish by approximately 79% in just 5 weeks!

A Message from the Placencia Humane Society Childhood Cruelty to Animals: Breaking the Cycle!

psychological distress. It often indicates that a child has experienced violence first hand or is at risk of becoming violent towards people. Many studies have recorded that violent offenders frequently have childhood and adolescent history of serious and repeated animal cruelty. That is why we are eagerly asking all parents, teachers, and animal lovers to speak up when they see a child or teen abusing animals or educating our children so it won’t ever start.

The love of animals, we always want to make sure they’re treated as a part of our family. Yes, Animals feel pain. More and more it’s come to our attention that the animals brought into PHS or flown to Belize City for treatment are victims of abuse caused by children. We would love to educate our Villages, and by sharing this post you Animal cruelty includes a can help to educate others. range of behaviours that is It’s been documented that harmful to animals whether animal cruelty is a sign of

its intentional or knowingly. Depriving an animal of food, water, shelter, socialization, veterinary care, tortures, maims, or mutilating any animal constitutes as cruelty to animals. A lot of these we see in our Villages and it’s up to us to stop it, by education and correction.

Many children go through a stage of exploration during which they might harm insects or other small animals, which is innocent exploration since all children when young are curious what things are or how they work. With guidance from parents and teachers, most eventually develop empathy

for animals and understand that they can feel pain. Some children still persist in harming or torturing animals well past the age of curious exploration. That is when it’s vital to step in when a child continues to harm animals despite adult correction or when you see a desire to harm animals. If you want to know more, or to see what else you can do to help besides educating our children, please contact your local Humane Society. If you suspect an animal being abused, please contact the Placencia Humane Society. Let’s break this cycle together.

Creative Arts Summer Camp at Pen Cayetano Studio Gallery By Maxim Del Pozzo

When I was 6 years old, I got the “feeling” of being a painter. I saw it as a gift from God, more than an inspiration. When I was 10 years old, I earned money for painting supplies by shining shoes. Later I earned a living working on a banana farm and a The Pen Cayetano Studio sugarcane plantation. It was Gallery in Dangriga held a backbreaking work, but it 4-day painting workshop supported my passion for for children ages 7 to 12 during the first week of July. I was very excited to have the chance to learn different painting techniques from a famous Belizean artist, Mr. Pen Cayetano, and also to ask a few questions about his views on painting.

painting.

direction and pressure to develop skills that will “get you a job”.

At what age do you think children should start to paint?

How can parents encourage their children to paint?

A talent can express itself very early on and when it does, it should be nurtured. A lot of effort and dedication need to go into developing that talent. Gifts disappear because of parents’ and society’s misguided

Parents can guide children to do what they enjoy doing and give them the freedom to do it. Did you have a mentor? How important is it for a child to have a mentor?

Benjamin Nicholas was my only mentor; he painted at Sacred Heart church in 1963. At that time Belize didn’t have many artists, so I mostly taught my self. It’s important to learn as much as you can and practice. Can you give a few words of encouragement to children who want to paint? Practice every day to get the sense of the direction you want to take in art. Explore different creative avenues – you don’t have to settle on only one. I divide my time between art and music, but I also explore other creative avenues like wood working and furniture building. Mr. Pen believes that his gift was given to him to be shared with others. I am very grateful that I was one of the people he shared it with.

What inspired you to become a painter?

A fun afternoon at Fusion with Ms. Diane, the Bead Queen, as she guided ten eager crafters through the stages of bracelet making. Sort of like a Quilting Bee but with wine, the best part was the camaraderie and making new friends. A glass of wine, the materials, and Ms. Diane's instruction and patience all included for $40BZ.

Talking Croc: Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) Update of the Placencia Lagoon By Dr. Marisa Tellez

Let’s start by talking poop… croc poop that is! Research has shown that one of the MANY reasons crocodiles are important for the ecosystem is because of their role in nutrient recycling: croc poop is very rich in nitrogen which is taken up by aquatic plants to grow, and thrive. The nutrients created by the plants are then fed back into the food chain as other animals consume the plants… thus a thriving and continuous Circle of Life! Interestingly enough, a strong correlation has been illustrated that as crocodile populations have decreased, so does the fish populations due to the lack of nutrients in the aquatic habitat, and the disruption of the local ecosystem function. Additionally, crocodiles have been shown to control fish populations: stronger fish competitors are kept at bay by crocodiles, preventing the stronger fish competitors from dominating the local ecosystem… what that means is that crocodiles assist in fish biodiversity by keeping stronger fish competitors wiping out other fish species. For fishing communities, ensuring local fish biodiversity, as well as continuing stable fish populations is highly important for people’s livelihoods, thus why various communities around the world are happy to know crocodiles are in their area, co-existing with these archaic predators (which is VERY possible!). Various communities, such as in South America, have witnessed the depletion of fish as the crocodilian population decreases, and are currently working on bringing back these reptilian predators to restore the ecosystem, and their fishing livelihoods!

Interestingly enough, we have heard from various fisherman living in historically crocodile habitat in Belize (such as in Placencia) that fish populations are not like how they use to be… is it perhaps because of the decrease in crocs in the area? We are not sure as there is no baseline data to work from. However, the CRC (established Jan 2016) has been performing research in the area and hoping that our data will not only give us insight about the local crocodile population, but also how the crocodiles interact with their ecosystem, which includes how declines in crocodiles may affect other wildlife populations (such as fish) in the area.

poaching could lead to their extinction. When it comes to losing animals forever, we need to ponder the longterm ramifications… how will our negative actions affect the environment, which can ultimately affect our livelihoods (such as our fishing and tourism

industry). Furthermore, if crocodiles are being poached, other wildlife most certainly is.

The CRC is currently collaborating with the Belize Forest Department and the Wildlife Conservation Society on creating an anti-poaching program for

crocodiles. We intend to educate about the dangers of feeding crocodiles (Costa Rica is a prime example as once shy crocodiles are now attacking locals and tourist boats after YEARS of feedings), as well as educate the negative ramifications poaching can have not only on the local biodiversity, but also on the local economy. If you have any information on poaching, or illegal feedings of crocodiles, please contact us via our Facebook page or call us at 670-5852 or 660-4655. Any information will be kept private and anonymous. Please join us in our efforts to ensure that Belize continues to remain “wild” for future generations to come!

So what have we found thus far? In brief, we have found a thriving population in the more isolated or uninhabited areas of the Placencia Lagoon, and a lack of crocodiles observed around Punta Placencia and Seine Bight. Maybe the lack of crocs in these two areas is a result of the lack of habitat? Or maybe this is because of an illegal activity… poaching! It has come to our knowledge that the poaching of crocodiles for the black market, as well as for local consumption, may be more common than previous knowledge around Placencia. It is ILLEGAL to poach, harass, and feed crocodiles in Belize. Crocodiles are likely being lured by illegal feedings (which is VERY dangerous given the crocodiles will lose their fear of humans and will be bolder to attack pets and humans) or caught in illegal gill nets. The American crocodile and Morelet’s crocodile is nationally and internationally protected by law, and the unregulated act of consumption or Visit www.placenciabreeze.com

My Bus Ride to Punta Gorda By Vickie Locke

A very loud rendition of Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" set to a toe-tapping reggae beat. At least 3 different languages. Tiki huts. Banana farms. Mayan children playing in the clear waters of the river below us as we crossed over a one-lane bridge. A weathered sign pointing down a gravel road to "Beyoncé’s Bar and Grill." Three mothers boarded the bus with their pre-schoolers. These ladies patiently answered a million questions from their kids. A nursing mother, no doubt grateful she had a few years to wait before becoming a pre-school encyclopedia. A Latino rendition of

Kenny Rogers' "You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me Lucille." Three very friendly Mennonites in long sleeves and ankle length cotton dresses. (Did I mention the temp was about 90 degrees? I don't know how they do it. Briefly, I imagined stripping down to shower-ready and joining those smart kids in the river.) A recording of Garifuna drumming--my shoulders started to bounce. Majestic mountains draped with a magical halo of clouds. My excitement simmered then boiled over. Oh look! The Caribbean Sea! That beautiful, spellbinding fluid of life! Oops...gotta go...this is my stop.

Turtle Biology

 

 

Sea turtles are gentle ocean dwelling reptiles. Slow-growing & late maturing (may take between 12-40 years to reach adulthood depending on the species). Range in weight from 40 kg to 1,000 kg. They are primarily omnivores but the green sea turtle is an herbivore.

Reproduction

  

Tips

Adult females may nest for two decades or more. A gravid female may lay 2-6 clutches of 80-200 eggs per year. The eggs are incubated in the sand for 50-65 days, during which the temperature plays a crucial role in determining gender of the hatchlings. Mature females return to nesting grounds in 2-5 intervals.

Dim/turn off the lights nearby beaches and nesting sites. Don’t drive on sea turtle nesting beaches. Fill any holes you dig while visiting the beach. Remove all beach chairs, umbrellas, boats or any other furniture from the beach before leaving at night.

Tipsy Tuna

Remove any trash from the beach when you leave.
