assie and Brice Dial could very well be your unconventional 21st century role models for young independent minded women everywhere. They strut their impressive post-pregnancy figures in shortshorts and mini-skirts while working their derrieres off and getting a tough job done. As the founders of Barefoot Bar, they have been the power house behind 21st century Placencia bar life. And while they have had their share of trials and tribulations most residents would agree that the village has been undoubtedly enriched by their commercial and social presence. Frequently mistaken for gringos, the Dials are true village girls and can speak a thicker Creole than born and bred Belizeans from the city. So, how did these blondies stake their claim in the local entertain- Brice and Cassie Dial at Barefoot Beach Bar. The girls moved to Placencia as young children with their family ment scene? and have since grown into fiercely independent business women. (MUZAMANZIE PHOTOGRAPHY) We’ll go way back to the late 1980s on a cattle ranch in Humboldt County, California. Here a quad of siblings Cassie, Brice, Ellie and Josh grew up with a lovingly mismatched couple of parents: Ms. Penny a prim and proper debutante from Ohio who held an undergraduate degree in political science and Mr. Dave, a wild, Indiana Jones, anti-status quo, no boundaries kind of man, also from Ohio, who had previously served as a U.S. Army captain in the Vietnam War.
through the rural towns of central Mexico. “It wasn’t scary at all,” recalled Cassie. “We enjoyed it. Dad made sure we loved it.” The entire trek took them three weeks. As brave as Mr. Dave was, he soon realized that the underpopulated environment of Toledo in 1990 was too much for his family, and that’s when he discovered the charming village of Placencia.
On the cattle ranch, Ellie home schooled her younger siblings, and they all hunted from the land and ate fresh produce from their gardens. Then one day, Mr. Dave saw a small classified ad in the back pages of a small farm journal promoting an investment opportunity to produce biodiesel at a small pig farm in Punta Gorda, Toledo, Belize.
The Dial kids loved it, and while they were most definitely a minority living among the predominantly Creole community, it didn’t take much time for them to make friends. Eventually, they spoke so much Creole in their social circles that their parents were unable to communicate with them at home, forcing Mr. and Mrs. Dial to implement an “English-only” rule in the household.
And as Mr. Dave’s adventurous spirit dictated, the family packed up their belongings and headed down south to Belize in an old Chevy pickup truck with a camper. Rather than taking short cuts, Mr. Dave took the longest routes making sure his children saw all that could be seen along the way as they travelled
“It was definitely a different life from Humboldt,” said Cassie who had just turned 11 years old when she landed in Belize. Ellie was 17, Josh was 13 and Brice was only nine years old. “In Placencia kids didn’t need invitations to visit each other’s homes. Sometimes we would have 20 kids show up to our

March 29th was their most recent test and what a test it was! Exploring Inland Treasures with Cockscomb Prodigy, Doyle Gardiner Continued from page 7 named Doyle’s Delight – Doyle maintains he has nothing to do with it.) The Cockscomb is co- managed by the Belize Audubon Society and covers 125,000 acres of the Maya Mountain range. The protected area carries an especially intriguing history and having been mentored by Dave Vernon who was directly involved in efforts to protect the area, Doyle offers insightful stories into his history presentation. Visitors learn about the key players who brought the Cockscomb into protected area status. The area had previously been used largely for logging and hunting. While the Cockscomb does boast perhaps the highest density of jaguars in the world, a paw print in the mud or a painted plywood cutout of the animal is the closest most visitors ever get to the animal. That’s why Doyle and other guides focus on the hundreds of species of plants and other fauna found along the sanctuary’s many Expect to engage all your senses of sight, sound, taste and smell on Doyle’s tour. (JOLIE POLLARD) trails and water courses. Following his history presentation, Doyle begins his expert tour of the jungle’s flora with a special initiation. He removes the stem from a plant used by herbalists to treat ringworm and dots everyone’s outer palms with its orange ink. The “oohs” and “aahs” continue as Doyle reveals the most peculiar plants on the jungle trail: leaves as soft as cotton and as rough as sand paper and even some that “fall asleep” at the slightest touch. He shows the group “horse eye” seeds that travel all the way to Norway with the ocean’s currents and that he says he used to rub against concrete as a mischievous child creating a fiery heat that would burn his friends. Throughout the natural history tour there is plenty of interaction including touch, smell, taste and sound. At one point, Doyle stands on a large mound and stomps his feet calling out gigantic ants. He picks up one of the monsters and takes turns placing it next to the ear of each member of the group who listens to the surprisingly loud squeaky sound of the insect. Lunch time: Doyle dishes out an incredible feast prepared earlier that morning by local cook Miss Malu. The group is treated to as fine a plate of Creole stewed chicken as can be found in any Belizean restaurant. The meal provided just A lesisurely float along the river is the prelude to an exciting rock sliding adventure. enough calories for the group to survive the wild (JOLIE POLLARD) adventure ahead. While holding black rubber tire tubes, the group hikes along a trail between two tall fields of wild cane finally coming to a stop at a peaceful river. At Doyle’s instruction everyone floats along with butts up over the rocks in the shallow waters. It is dry season, and the currents are gentle, but no one can deny the cool water is most refreshing on the hot day. The leisurely floating allows ample time for chit chat and the group becomes more familiar with each other. Doyle even chimes in on Belizean politics and the local economy during the float at the behest of Nayla and Rebecca, two New York University graduates Doyle had picked up earlier from Miller’s Landing Resort.
he changed from smiling flight attendant to daredevil test pilot. It was time for rock sliding, an activity in the jungle that puts those massive slides at popular water parks to shame. “This is the part of the trip that sets Doyle’s adventure apart from those of all other guides,” said Vernon, who taught the young guide how to skillfully move over the slippery rocks connecting the waterfall to the next jungle trail. It is risky business, but Doyle has been doing this for many years.
After making the stop along the river bank, the pace picked up quickly. Tubes were put aside on the start of a more demanding jungle trail, and the trek towards the waterfall began. It was almost as though the easy float on the river was some kind of smokescreen for this part of the tour. After about 40 minutes climbing over rocks and thick tree roots, which proved exasperating for some novice hikers, the group was finally rewarded with a delicious frothy waterfall roaring into a small pool of cool water framed by “Trust me,” he says to the group as everyone ancient boulders and lush green jungle. approaches the first Some in the group thought this was the last stop, but again another smokescreen. Exploring Inland Tr e a s u r e s w i t h Cockscomb Prodigy, Doyle Gardiner Continued from page 14 slide with caution and listens to instructions. Maybe it’s his handsome face or those inviting eyes, but each member in the group takes Doyle’s word and embarks on a crazy spree of sliding down rocks of all sizes and swerving in all directions and making big splashes into pools of water. “This was the best value for my money!” said Starr from Chicago who had been on several other tours during her trip. “I loved it. It was awesome!” added Bart, a Slovakian visiting from Ireland. Bart said he chose the Cockscomb tour because “pretty much every guidebook tells you to do it.” There is a less strenuous jungle hike back to the park following rock sliding, and visitors can ex- Nayla and Rebecca visiting from New York pose near waterfall. (JOLIE POLLARD) pect some more fun facts there too. Sometime after 4:00 p.m. everyone was returned safely to the Peninsula taking in their day’s adventure and pondering what they would do for an encore. ▪

Heartfelt Thank You from The Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department By Kathy Anglin Fire Chief, PVFD gailgustafson.smith@gmail.com
On behalf of the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department I would like to thank all those who contributed to making the recently held Seventh Annual Flaming Heart Ball, featuring “A Taste of the Peninsula,” such an outstanding success! We gratefully and proudly announce that thanks to the hard work and generosity of so many, the net proceeds for the evening exceeded $17,000 making it our most successful Flaming Heart Ball to date! All proceeds will be used to ensure that our fire department will be able to continue to protect our community, with the money being used to fund the daily operations and the maintenance of the equipment of the PVFD. This wonderful evening was again held at the Tipsy Tuna Seaside Bar, and we are very grateful to Gillian and Salva Zabaneh for once again donating not only their premises PVFD members are presented certificates thanking them for their contributions to the Peninsula community. for the evening, but also for all the (MUZAMANZIE PHOTOGRAPHY) help they and their staff gave hosting the event! We were also very fortunate to have had such a fabulous line-up of entertainers who ensured that all the guests had a great time! Of course, the “Taste of the Peninsula” was particularly fantastic this year as a result of the creativity and talent of the best chefs on the Peninsula. They offered our guests absolutely fabulous “tastes” that were enjoyed by all! Our community is truly fortunate to have such culinary artists! We also had super raffle prizes which had been donated by so many of our community businesses and services. Of course, such a successful event does not “just happen” and we had a wonderful team of volunteers who gave much time, energy and talent to create this outstanding event. The FVFD is truly appreciative of every one of you! And last, but not least, thank you to all those who attended The Flaming Heart Ball and who so generously supported Tipsy Tuna Owners Salva and Gillian Zabaneh are recognized for their continuous support to the PVFD for the PVFD again this year. ▪ hosting and staffing the event and so much more. Karaoke started off as one of the most eventful happenings on the Peninsula. Today several bars in the village take turns hosting karaoke nights for a faithful following.
Deb Vernon, Lee Nyhus and Ellie Dial karaoke on a girls’ night out. (FACEBOOK)
With tourism having just entered its blooming stage and business being fairly quiet on the Peninsula, karaoke night was a most welcomed occasion for locals to socialize, drink and sing their favorite songs playing on the radio. Eventually the sensation started seeing more participation from international visitors as well as an expanding karaoke track book when it moved over to the current Sunset Pointe area towards the southern end of the Placencia Lagoon at the Sugar Reef Bar, which closed in the late 2000s. While lovers of this Love FM karaoke playlist continue to enjoy a cherished pastime at J-Dee’s, those with different tastes including hip hop, heavy metal and everything in between have been able to find their niche at the Tipsy Tuna Sports Bar on Thursday nights with young karaoke DJ Karl Lovell. More recently, the newly opened Charo’s Bar & Grill has also been hosting karaoke nights catering to both crooners and party starters. So whatever your nationality, musical tastes or singing talents... Placencia just may be your karaoke heaven. ▪

The Unstoppable Girl Power Behind Barefoot Bar Continued from page 11 her father with the tour shop, and all the girls continued gaining more experience in the food and bar business while taking on different shifts at Tentacles and Dockside. Not long into their new Placencia life, Josh left the Peninsula and joined the United States Army, and Ellie, the eldest daughter left the household and started her own with a son of a well known Placencia family. She eventually led the Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association at the Placencia Tourism Center for 11 years leaving a solid footprint in the development of the local tourism industry. By the time Brice was 15 and Cassie was 17, their father decided it was time for the two girls to become reacquainted with their roots. He thought village life was not stimulating enough, and both girls needed to start the college path in the good ole’ USA.
the local bar scene. Local businessman Salva Zabaneh offered them a leasing opportunity for a beach bar on his property in front of his Tipsy Tuna indoor sports bar. “We jumped on it!” recalled Cassie. “We had never run our own business before, but we were ready.” Barefoot Bar was an immediate success and there was not a single moment that the girls thought “it wasn’t going to work.” Cassie and Brice did everything in the early years at Barefoot. They bought ice at the Placencia Fishermen’s Cooperative and wheel barrowed it to the bar. They did their own inventory and bookkeeping. They crafted food menus and tended bar too. Starting in December 1996, they lived with their 79-year-old grandmother in the suburbs of Akron, Ohio. She knew nothing about Belize, and the girls were miserable. But high school was easy. Ellie’s homeschooling coupled with the education system in Placencia had prepared them so well that Brice was even bumped up a grade. Eventually both girls tested successfully into college. However, the American way was short-lived. “There was no question. Placencia was home for us,” Cassie said. “There was a huge cultural gap in the States. We met so many narrow-minded people who were completely unable to understand our life in Belize.” The girls quickly devised a plan to escape. During the summer before they were supposed to start college, they consumed their time by working at horse stables, department stores, and restaurants –everything they could to save money for their plane tickets back to Belize. By late November 1999, they were back in Placencia and “dad was pissed.”

And that’s how Street Feet Night Club was born on Feb. 14, 2014. Brice had actually invented the name some years before and kept it in hiding until a need for it arose. The huge, bright pink ambitious investment near the village market square and across from the football field became an instant hit. Protected with thick concrete walls, the party gets loud inside Street Feet and continues until the wee hours
of the morning. “It has definitely been another good chapter for us,” said Cassie. And her mother is very proud. “My daughters put so much energy and time into what they do, and they do nothing half ass,” Ms. Penny said hoping she had used a nicer word. Now operating Street Feet Night Club and Barefoot Beach Bar successfully independently with her sisters as her only business partners, I asked Cassie what important business lesson she has learned throughout her history of running the Barefoot Bar and she said, “Listen to Brice.”▪

Maya Beach Resident’s Reef Moment Wins Third Place in OCEANA Contest Congratulations to Deborah Hamrell for winning third place in the OCEANA Instagram Competition! We asked Deborah to tell us a bit more about herself and how she captured this beautiful image: “I first came to Placencia in November 2012 and was back and forth several times from Canada until I decided to make Maya Beach my permanent home in October of last year. I like many have come to this beautiful country to escape the Canadian cold winters, but mostly to fulfill a dream of living in the tropics. I have travelled around Belize, but found a love for the Peninsula, the sea, the jungle and the lagoon. Every morning I wake to the sound of the birds and the beauty totally filled with gratitude of being here. I discovered the photo contest on the Placencia Classifieds Facebook page. And when I read about Reef Week, I remembered my time last year at Hol Chan Marine Reserve. It was a spectacular snorkelling trip. I was armed with my underwater camera and had no clue what I was about to encounter beneath the surface of the water at the reef.
“Everyone wanted to be in the picture.” Hamrell’s photo taken at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve won third place in the OCEANA Instagram competition held online in March. (DEBORAH HAMRELL)
It was like entering another world. The waters were plentiful of living species, and it was a bit overstimulating – the amount of creatures that were swimming
around me. A bit unnerving for this novice snorkeler! I took a deep breath and just floated silently as I watched the beauty swim around me. I was about to take some photos and as I stretched
out my camera, the group gathered. It seemed they all wanted to be in the picture. My awareness has been heightened about the reef since I have moved here and the importance of car-
ing for it. Be respectful. So thank you to OCEANA and the work they do to create awareness. and thank you to them for choosing my photo. It represents a great memory for me.▪
