PLACENCIA Breeze A Placencia BTIA Publication

Belize’s Biggest Beach Bashment Easter in Placencia Placencia has long been the beach to head for on Easter weekend. All the major beach bars, Barefoot Beach Bar, Tipsy Tuna Seaside Bar and Cozy Corner have music, food and drinks except Good Friday when no alcohol is allowed. The Placencia Municipal Pier is more laid back and has great swimming too with food vendors plus nearby restaurants. If you are looking for something quieter, Punta Negra is having their beach party on Sunday, April 16th (details on Page 31). There are many streetside vendors selling BBQ and other great food and all gift shops are open with memorable souvenirs and T-shirts of Placencia. And don’t forget all the relaxing resorts north of Placencia Village in Seine Bight, Maya Beach and Riversdale. Most have amazing restaurants and beach side bars.

From the Fire Hearth: Easter April 2017 means Easter. In Belize, a country that is mostly Christian, with 40% Catholics making the largest denomination, Easter is a big deal, not to mention a 4-day weekend! Good Friday is observed with the sizzling sound of fish being fried across the country. Demand is so high that prices rise, fishermen are out for days prior to Easter weekend and illegal fishing practices are an annual Easter problem for enforcement officials. Alongside that crispy fried fish there will be no cold beer, unless you purchased some ahead of time, as on Good Friday alcohol sales are typically banned across the country. This doesn’t stop anyone from celebrating Easter Weekend with spectacular parties, however, as Placencia is one of Belize’s top destinations for Easter Weekend Bashment. This bacchanalian festival of spring is an annual event along the coastal areas and islands of Belize, the traditional Easter destination for Belizean families. Our beaches will be crowded with Belizeans celebrating Easter, especially in front of Tipsy Tuna and Barefoot Bars, where live music, big name DJs, organized competitions and alcoholic drinks will flow freely from sundown on Good Friday until Easter Monday. Part of the festivities are contests, ranging from the standard strong man, bikini and dance competitions to the food and beverage section that interests us here. For the kids, soft drink and watermelon eating contests, while for the adults, beer drinking and coconut husking competitions are popular. Don’t get it wrong, this is a bashment and entertainment value is the most

important part of these activities, so or Good Friday but can be found coconut husking is conducted with all Easter Weekend. Placencia Players Theatre Presents “Just Another Day in Paradise” By Rebecca Walton Placencia Players Theatre performed their first production, “Ebony Scrooge” at The Tipsy Tuna on December 19th which was attended by over 400 people and was able to raise, through donations only, over eleven hundred dollars BZ for Rotary Club of Placencia Lunch with Santa. Additionally, fifty unwrapped toys were collected and given to the Placencia Village Council to be given to needy children throughout the peninsula. On April 9th Placencia Players Theatre will once again take the stage at The Tipsy Tuna for their Spring production of “Just Another

Croc Corner Is that an American Crocodile? Maybe it is a Morelet’s Crocodile? Have you ever seen a croc that looked a little out of the ordinary from what you normally see? Well, that may be a hybrid you are seeing! Hybridization happens in many species especially in areas where there has been loss of habitat, low populations of one or both species, and/or when they have overlapping ranges.

Hybridization is a hot topic among the scientific community- are hybrids to be protected like their parent species? For the genetic purity of both species do we intervene or do we let nature takes it

course? Scientific data from Belize and Mexico suggest hybridization has been occurring over thousands of generations between the American and Morelet’s Crocodiles. When the two species interbreed the 1st and sometimes 2nd generation offspring tend to take on characteristics of both parent species, which can confuse the crocodile scientists trying to identify species for their research! The Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) have noticed crocs with traits from both parent species, such as a pre-orbital hump found in the American Crocodiles and intermittent scutes found in Morelet’s Crocodiles, on the same croc

around the Placencia area. In reality we know very little about these animals as there has not been a lot of research on American x Morelet’s hybrids since the mid-1990s, however the CRC will be mentoring students in investigating the genetics and physiology of the hybrid crocs. Hybrids between Indo-pacific Crocodiles and Siamese

Crocodiles are known to grow as large if not larger than the parent species, as well as grow faster. They are also thought to have a greater ability to adapt to changing environments. Whether or not these characteristics are the same for the hybrids in Belize, future studies will let us know!

Day in Paradise” an original adult comedy based in a fictional Caribbean village. The play takes place in a beach side bar where a cast of misfit characters come together to figure out their own place in paradise. Tourists, ex-pats and locals will delight in this irreverent take on living the dream in paradise. There will be two shows, one at 6pm and one at 8pm. The shows are free of charge, but donations are encouraged to benefit The Placencia Humane Society. Get there early, as seats are first come, first served. For more information visit our Facebook page Placencia Players Theatre. The CRC may need to add a new character to their croc mascot team (Ally Acutus and Morris Moreletii) as these two crocs are no longer the only crocs in town! Can you help us name our newest hybrid friend? He or she must have a name that starts with an H. If you would like to help email us at program.coordinator@ crcbelize.org!

Miss Belize Visits Schools in Placencia Area By Rebecca Rath

On Thursday I visited Independence Village and met some very inspiring women. Girls and boys danced and sang their heart out, and I am so happy to have been to be a part of that event. On Saturday, Seine Bight hosted an inspirational event as well and I met an 11-year-old who ran a 13-mile marathon, and some kids that want to be soldiers, chefs, athletes and even a future Miss Belize! They were so well behaved and attentive and very supportive of each other. Then it was on to Placencia where young men and women danced and read poems and showed us how smart they were! I spoke along with 2 other extremely talented Belizeans who shared their stories. The day ended with a full sidewalk tour with Ms Cunchie and her niece Andrea and then a peaceful 5 course dinner courtesy of Itz'ana. Thank you so much to everyone who gave to make this possible. I have always loved Placencia and I was so happy for the chance to meet everyone! Can’t wait to go back! Thank you, Megs Yearwood, for organizing a wonderful visit! You are something special! For more pictures follow Maz Carr on Facebook. She gave her time and skill to us and was able to capture every moment!

Reef Week 2017

The Annual Reef Swim Challenge was held March 12th. The event, organized by the WWF, features a 1.6-mile swim of the English Channel [from English Caye to Goff's Caye]. This year some 25 swimmers braved the sea, including 17 Coast Guards. Among the swimmers was Jolie Pollard from Placencia who came first in the women's division. The Challenge is a part of the activities for Reef Week.

“In the Name of Wild” is a transmedia-ethnographic research project that explores cross-cultural meanings of wildness and the consequences of naming landscapes natural, wild, or pristine. Between 2014-2020 Royal Roads researchers Dr. Phillip Vannini and Dr. April Vannini will be travelling to 24 UNESCO World Heritage Natural Sites across six continents to explore how wild natures are made, protected, and experienced. We have been busy learning from local people and exploring the Belize Barrier Reef: in danger Unesco World Heritage. Yesterday we spent time with Mambo learning about the fishing, free diving, conservation, and tourism. Mambo is a man of many experiences and much knowledge. His father (Editor's note: Mambo's father is Mr. Villamar Godfrey) taught him how to free dive for lobster when he was a teenager, started the first touring/guiding business in Belize, activist, conservationist and is an advisor to SEA Southern Environmental Association. SEA manages Laughing Bird Caye (designated Unesco WH). SEA director Arreini Palacio-Morgan talked to us about their organization, management, conservation and education programs.

Page 11

“In the Name of Wild” We are feeling extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Villamar Godfrey today about what it was like to fish, dive, and explore the barrier reef and cayes in the past. We are not the first to speak with Mr Villa. In 1972, Mr. Villamar Godfrey was photographed by National Geographic while free diving to spear jewfish for a story about Belize. Now 83 years old he talks proudly of being a man of the ocean and how he used to sail around the Blue Hole (iconic symbol of Belize) before anyone knew the Blue Hole existed.

We spent some time with Lisa Carne learning about coral restoration in the Belize Barrier Reef around Laughing Bird Caye. Fragments of Hope, Belize is a wonderful communitybased organization working on the restoration of coral reef habitats and advocating for sustainable management. More corals=more fish! They also took us out on a kayak paddle around Placencia lagoon to learn about the vital importance of mangroves to the reefs ecosystem. Occasionally we also need to eat so we joined Lyra and Peter from Taste Belize and visited Ixcacao Maya Belizean Chocolate a small family operated cacao farm. YUMMY 100% chocolate! Here in a country where many families struggle to take care of basic needs the care of stray animals can easily be overlooked. But, thanks to the efforts of the Placencia Humane Society, there can be a bright side. Here is one such story.

“He wandered into our lives at The Turtle Inn in early January. It appeared that all the patrons loved him, but we allowed him to stay in our room nightly, walked down the beach with him, took him all over on our golf cart which included lunches and dinners and actually walked him on leash. We bathed him and I allowed him to sleep in bed with me at The Inn. Let's just say, this is not the first time that has happened. I am known to make friends with local cats and dogs from Mexico to Panama, Hawaii to Europe. Often I find homeless animals and take care of them while I'm on vacation but never take them home and it breaks my heart. The reason we decided to take Jackson with us, other than just loving him, is the result of an earlier experience I had with another loveable stray.

Jackson is a sweet, wonderful dog that deserved a good, loving and stable home. When first presented with the opportunity however, Jackson was not entirely ready to cooperate. Jackson was adopted by Rene Brown in 2010 from PHS. Rene wanted him as a guard dog for the Moorings but Jackson wanted no part of a fence or leash. Rene said she should have named him Houdini because he always found a way to escape. He would spend his days and nights at the Flying Pig, where ever there were people and chicken wings. But his wandering ways were not without danger. A dog that runs free can be attacked by other dogs or wild animals, they are susceptible to TVT, a sexually transmitted disease, if not neutered or spayed and there is the constant danger of being run over by a car.

had to be fostered for two weeks before he could be could shipped to the states. With the help of Mary Smith and Miriam de Shield of Belize City Jackson was kenneled overnight in Belize City and finally transported to his new permanent home in California. It took three flights and many long hours in cargo or kennels but Jackson finally arrived in his new forever home on January 24. Christina reports on his arrival and integration in his new environment. “Jackson has been here in Beverly Hills with my two adopted kitties since April of 2016. We had discussed getting Waimea a playmate but I was not ready to commit until that adorable, well mannered Jackson came into our lives. He is the most calm and loving dog and we are overjoyed to have him here with our family. He and Waimea are such great buddies. They wrestle together, walk together and come to lunches and hikes with us. They have also become such snuggle buddies!! His name now is Jackson Turtle. We kept Jackson, as he knows his name, but added Turtle in memory of where we first met. He is complimented daily by passersby and welcomed into restaurants, hotels and wine tasting rooms with us.”

While on vacation last April I found a starving Whippet in Kauai in the Waimea Canyon. I learned the evening I found my beloved Waimea, as I named the Whippet, that they are used for hunting. They assist hunters to hunt wild boar, pheasants and deer and often get left in the mountains to starve or get killed by another animal. As soon as I learned that from many locals, I decided he was coming home with Christina sends her deepest thanks me! Likewise, after so much time Fortunately for Jackson he to Mary Smith, Miriam de Shield bonding with Jackson it was simply eventually found his way to the and all of the volunteers at the not an option to leave him behind.” Turtle Inn and that was where he Placencia Humane Society who Christina contacted Mary Smith found his new forever home people. made this wonderful success story from PHS and the process began. Update on the Belize Shrimp Industry By Linda Cardelli Thornton

Owner Cardelli Farms Ltd., Vice-President of the Belize Shrimp Growers Association

The shrimp industry is a major employer in the Stann Creek District in Belize employing over 1500 workers in the area, with the majority being women that work in the processing facilities. In early 2015, our industry was hit by a bacterial disease referred to as EMS, Early Mortality Syndrome also known as AHPNS, Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Syndrome. The bacteria that causes this disease is known as Vibrio parahaemolyticus and is ubiquitous in seawater. A mutation occurred of this bacteria in nature and was first found off the coast of China, in 2009. The bacteria was invaded by a plasmid, a small DNA molecule, that when the population of bacteria reach a high population

level a toxin is produced that infects the gastrointestinal tract of the shrimp that degrades the tissues and leads to death. This toxin acts like an insecticide on the shrimp since shrimp are basically marine insects. The bacteria somehow managed to cross the Pacific and entered the ecosystem of Mexico and then eventually moved into Belize.

When the industry was hit in 2015 this led to lowered production and many of the 13 farms shut down for the second half of the year. Our industry responded quickly to learn how to manage this disease. Members of the Belize Shrimp Growers Association traveled to many countries that had a history with this disease such as; Thailand, Indonesia, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Panama. Consultants were invited

to visit our farms and advise us for its employees and local on new management strategies to communities. Belize is proud to be recover our production. the first country in the world to be Our peak production occurred awarded this recognition for over in 2014 with close to 17 million 90% of its production. field lbs. with a value of $US 45 million . The majority of this product was exported to Mexico, the Caribbean and the European Union. The farms have now invested new capital into modifications of infrastructure, new genetic breeding stock and training of staff to improve the detection of disease before it hits and causes extensive losses. The industry received the prestigious Aquaculture Stewardship Council Certification in 2015 that recognizes sustainability in environmental responsibility and social awareness

Visit www.placencia.com

Due to our management changes to become more sustainable our farms are now discharging less effluent, some have complete recirculation now, and have become even more efficient with the use of feed and fertilizer input almost cut to zero. The farms that have implemented changed management strategies are finding ways to control the bacteria and continue sustainable production. We project full recovery in our industry by 2018. Any further inquiries or questions can be addressed to the Belize Shrimp Growers Association and linda@cardellifarms.com.
