From the Fire Hearth: Sustainable Seafood! This month’s issue of The Breeze is all about the Caribbean Sea. And of course living here right next that beautiful body of water, the first thing most of us want to enjoy on our plates is some delicious seafood, fresh from those lovely blue and green waters. In Placencia we can find lobster and conch (in season), shrimp, crab and a variety of fish at area restaurants. Unfortunately the Caribbean Sea, like seas and oceans all over the world, has been suffering the effects of overfishing, uncontrolled coastal development, pollution and climate change. Times are tough for mangrove forests as developers continue to bulldoze and fill them, and for coral reefs around the world as water temperatures and pollution levels rise.
What can you do? As a consumer of seafood there are things we should know and do to help curtail illegal fishing practices and support a sustainable seafood industry. In Belize we have laws meant to help ensure a sustainable future of our seafood industry. On Placencia Peninsula the Southern Environmental Association (SEA), and Fragments of Hope are two NGOs that work to secure the future of our piece of the beautiful Caribbean. Fragments of Hope focuses on coral restoration and educational outreach. They have produced a handy little Seafood Guide for Belize which can be found around Placencia and on their website at fragmentsofhope.org. You can help protect our future seafood meals in several ways. One is abiding by our closed seasons. Closed seasons are periods of time during which it is illegal to catch, sell or eat certain animals. Typically the animal is reproducing during this time. Whether you are a visitor,
part time resident or proud Belizean, please do not ask for or accept seafood being offered during closed seasons. If we harvest our sea life during mating season, we eliminate future generations. The end resultno more lobster dinner. Lobster Season is closed from February 15th until June 14th of every year. Conch Season is closed July 1-September 30th. Nassau Grouper is off the menu December 1-March 30th. Sea cucumbers should not be harvested July 1-December 31st, West Indian Topshell is off limited January 1-September 30th and wild shrimp may not be fished July 14-March 14 (choose our readily available farmed shrimp instead). Sharks should not be on your plate August
1-October 31st and we urge you consider avoiding them entirely. The fishing of top predators like sharks in our beautiful Caribbean unbalances the entire ecosystem. Certain sea life and sea products are completely banned including: harvesting of coral and all parrot fish, blue tang, surgeon fish, doctor fish, which play an important role in keeping the reef clean and healthy. Permit, tarpon and bonefish are also banned from harvest so sport fishermen can sustainably hunt these fish. All marine turtles, whales and nurse sharks, marine mammals such as manatee and crocodiles are also protected species. Diced conch or lobster may not be sold as it is impossible to tell if the

conch or lobster harvested were of a legal size. Conch shell length must be bigger than 7 inches and lobster cape length larger than 3 inches to be of legal size. Please do your part to support legal and fair fishing practices and to promote development that is sustainable and not destructive to the mangrove, sea grass and coral reef environments upon which our future seafood dinners depend. We want you to enjoy your seafood meal with a clean conscience. Lyra Spang is owner/guide of Taste Belize Tours, a unique cultural & culinary tour company. Croc Corner Placencia Lagoon – where have all the crocs gone? The Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) is often asked “How is the croc population in the lagoon?” Based on our surveys the local population is lower than it should be in relation to the amount of what is considered good habitat that is available. In the Placencia Lagoon we have counted a total of 19 crocodiles, and those are made up of American, Morelet’s, and hybrid crocodiles. Although this number is not high relative to historic numbers (early 1800s-1900s), it does illustrate some recovery from heavy poaching pressures pre-1980s. The Placencia Lagoon is considered brackish water and due to its proximity fresh water it has created the perfect area to find both species and hybrids between the two. We discovered this during our recent surveys in connection to the Nationide Morelet’s Crocodile Population Survey. You may be wondering where are all the crocs if they are not in the lagoon. Well the answer is they are trying to find good habitat, especially nesting habitat, as more prime habitat and mangroves disappear. The loss of mangroves
shouldn’t be a concern of only crocs, but to us residents of the lagoon as well. Mangroves protect us from storm surge, and they are the nurseries for various animals such as fish. If you depend on fish for food or eco-tourism, the loss of mangroves should be of greatest concern- research has shown the decline of fish correlates to the loss of mangroves. This is when we need to begin the discussion of a balance between development and nature, because the high rate of development is not sustainable for the community nor local wildlife who depend on the Placencia Lagoon for their livelihood, not to mention as lack of good croc habitat will only push crocs into urban areas increasing human-crocodile conflict.

important habitat for fish and invertebrates. More Corals = More Fish!
It is true that corals can live through a mild bleaching event, and later repopulate with algae. If the event is moderate to severe (just like prolonged diarrhea) it leads to coral death.
Fragments of Hope has successfully outplanted over 70,000 corals to Laughing Bird Caye National Park, which was hit directly by a category 4 Hurricane (Iris) in 2001. They have increased coral cover by > 35%. The average coral cover in Belize (2015) is just 16%, and in Florida, less than 6%. One of the easiest ways to see the results of their work is to snorkel Laughing Bird Caye National Park and see for yourself the thriving coral populations! The work has now expanded to South Silk Caye, Moho (aka Traps aka Wild Orchid Caye), and Coral Caye (aka French Louie Caye). Nurseries have also been installed near South Water and Tobacco Caye, and in Turneffe Atoll for restoration work planned there though 2019.
Fragments of Hope was one of the first organizations in the world to host a screening of the documentary Chasing Coral, on its actual release date. Tipsy Tuna kindly cohosted the event on Friday July 13th at 7pm. A mix of approximately 50 locals and visitors attended. It When a bleaching event was a delightful clear and occurs the corals are reacting beautiful night. to an external stimulus, and Chasing Coral follows expel the algae. An analogy the first-person emotional is when humans get sick, account witnessing the and expel things within us widespread, decimating via vomiting and diarrhea coral die-off in the Great even though often what Barrier Reef (GBR), which we expel (like fluids) are occurred 2015/2016. During beneficial to our own health. this severe bleaching event about 1/3 of the GBR experienced severe to moderate coral die-off, with much of the reefs followed during the film showing a dismal 90-100% mortality rates of corals during the three months of filming.
The phrase “coral bleaching” is a term that belies the severity of the event. Corals are animals related to the anemone which live in colonies. Corals by themselves are not colored but live in a symbiotic relationship with algae. It is the algae that give the rich hues we have all witnessed diving and snorkeling in our beautiful Belizean waters. The algae, as plants do, are able to enzymatically harness the sun’s energy and combine with carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce sugars and complex carbohydrates via photosynthesis. The coral (animals) utilize the sugars and carbohydrates as food from the algae. In return, the corals provide the algae with a safe location and give the algae nutrients (waste nitrogen from the corals) in which to live. This is called mutual symbiosis. And so the algae genus that live within corals are named Symbiodinium. FUN FACT: Dr. Robert Trench, a born- Belizean who studied in Jamaica and later
One of the main causes of coral bleaching is the rising water temperature brought about by climate change. A seemingly small 2°C (3.5° F) temperature shift may not seem very drastic, but think about how you feel when your normal body temperature of 98.6° F rises (by 3.5° F) 102.2 ° F. Remember about how awful you feel with that fever. That is similar to what the corals are experiencing, for months at a time. Corals are immensely important to the quality of life here in Belize and to life on the planet as a whole. Corals sequester carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) and turn it into calcium carbonate, thereby removing it from the atmosphere. The algae within the corals, produce oxygen which diffuses into the water which fish and creatures need to live. Corals also build a natural breakwater which reduces the destructive erosion of waves. They protect our precious land during storms and hurricanes. Plus corals provide the
While the film, Chasing Coral did not showcase what we can do to offset these horrible events, our own Fragments of Hope, based here in Placencia, has been a pioneer of reef restoration for over a decade. Fragments of Hope is a local non-profit, community based organization, whose main goal is to restore damaged coral populations. They work to install coral nurseries and to outplant these corals into previously damaged reefs.
Thank you attendees! Thank you Chasing Coral! Thank you Tipsy Tuna! Thank you Fragments of Hope! Chasing Coral was produced by Jeff Orlowski, who also directed the multiple, international award-winning and Emmy nominee 2012 documentary Chasing Ice. Both films are on Netflix. Many times, before leaving the swelter of DC I questioned my decision to head to the heat of Belize in July. Not once in a week vacation did I regret the decision. The cool breeze off the Caribbean Sea is the perfect antidote to the swamp (political and climate-wise) of Washington in the summer. The benefit of returning to a favorite vacation spot is the ability to instantly unwind as soon as you step off the plane on to the tarmac. Knowing how long the ride is to your hotel and looking forward to your favorite local treat is like going home, without all the family drama. Miramar Apartments Miramar apartments is a solid option in Placencia. While location isn’t necessarily a major concern in this small village, there are few better spots. nothing you need is further than you can toss a coconut. Ample parking and paved walkways make traveling with a roller bag of dive gear manageable. The rooms in the original buildings are reasonably priced, clean and well-appointed, if the furnishings are a bit dated. The new studio apartments are a bit more but have amazing views. The common areas include the newly installed pool, rooftop lounge, pergola-covered beach sitting area and outdoor grills. To top it off, Ilsa Villanueva, the Manager, has the brightest smile, which you are treated to daily, since she seems to always be on hand to help with any request. facebook.com/ThePlacenciaBreeze Membership Spotlight Miramar Apartments in Placencia Village started from humble beginnings as the family home of Felice and Rodwell Williams. Gradually two studio apartments were added and in 2006, the condo style apartments were completed.
Page 19
Miramar Apartments
Now, with the final expansion complete, the Miramar is a jewel on the Caribbean Sea with new ocean view apartments, pool, roof top deck and shaded beach area with BBQ. The studio apartments have amazing views of the beach and sea and are equipped with full kitchens. The first thing you notice when you come in is the quiet and coolness‌ no noise from the pool and other apartments. The A/C quietly keeps the room cool and the bathrooms are perfect with an extra-large walk in shower and a vanity with lots of storage and room for your personal products. The location puts it in the center of Placencia Village within walking distance to restaurants, shops, bars (but not too close!) and all other amenities. Certainly, one of the highlights is the attention the manager, Ilsa Villaneuva, along with the eight staff members give all their guests. Ms. Villaneuva is also the Chairlady of the Placencia Village Council.

Hurricane Preparedness It’s never too late
Hurricane Iris 2001
Hurricane Season
June 1st through November 31st 2017 by Blow Hard Yap, it’s that time of year again. Hurricane Season is upon us. As someone who has been through every hurricane in Miami since 1953, survived Hurricane Andrew on August 24, 1992 and every storm on the Belize peninsula since April 5, 2005, I don’t claim to be an expert of any kind. What I do have is experience in the real world. One thing I can say is this, ‘DO NOT UNDER ESTIMATE
A HURRICANE’. Even a tropical storm can and will do damage. Consider it like staring down the throat of a hungry Jaguar. You’re pretty sure you know that something is going to happen, you just don’t know what. That’s a hurricane!
over you realize how wrong you were. Even though we do our best to prepare, we always for one reason or another don’t do the one thing that will cause us to say, ‘I wished I’d a dun dat’.
It’s now (as I write) June 2017. Being prepared is something you Hurricane Season 2017 is here and think you are. After the storm is already the tropics are heating up.
Scientist try to do their best and are doing a much better job than when I was a boy. Back then, we waited for the Hurricane Hunters to return with the data. Then it had to be reviewed, then put into something we could understand. We would get at the most 3 days warning. I remember one night Dad got a call in the middle of the night. He came into the bedroom and said, ‘wake up boys, we got a hurricane coming. We have to wake the neighbors and prepare.’ A neighbor worked for a local TV station and the report just came in that a Hurricane that went north turned a 180 degrees and was heading directly towards Miami. There we were waking neighbors, opening garages and putting up shutters with car lights and flash lights. The adults were gathering supplies we all had for the neighborhood after the storm. All the stores were closed and there was no time. We got the storm, all was fine, cleaned up, went back to school and waited for the next one. That was the life of a boy in Miami in the 50’s. Today these storms are more severe. As someone who survived Hurricane Andrew and lost my home along with 200,000 other home owners, all I can say is; ‘Just when you think you are prepared, think again and do more.’ I know there are a lot of you that survived Hurricane Iris on October 11, 2001, you know what I am talking about. Iris had winds of 140mph CAT 4 and was the strongest storm of that season. Andrew’s winds were reported as high as 220mph CAT 5. Both are catastrophic. Don’t hesitate to start preparing now. Ask those who weathered the storms and get their knowledge and use it wisely. Be as prepared as possible and whatever you do, try to be permanent, meaning, shutters should be metal not wood. They are stronger and will last you for years to come if installed properly. Lights should be solar. You don’t have to worry about batteries and will save you money in the long run. Simple thought and a little investment will save you money and protect you and your loved ones more. Don’t forget your neighbors. It’s team work that gets you through. Prepare, be safe, talk around, gain knowledge, pay attention and PREPARE SOME MORE. Happy Hurricane Season

Villamar Godfrey by The Godfrey Family “January 22, 1934 - June 1, 2017 was born to Apolinaria Godfrey and Persival Godfrey in the village of Monkey River. At the age of two, he moved to Belize City to attend St. Ignatious school where he joined the football team, "The Black Knights"; a team sponsored by none other than George Cadle Price. At age 18, he went to work at Half-Moon Caye with his father who was the lighthouse keeper there.

His spirit and stories live on. Our deepest condolences to the Godfrey family and the village of Placencia. Rest in peace Mr. Villa Godfrey.
Villamar accomplished many things in his life: he was one of the first men to introduce free diving, which paved the way for the fishing industry in Placencia. He loved to read, he loved nature and always wanted to learn and educate himself about it; he subscribed to National Geographic and received magazines every year. Then one day, low and behold, He was featured in the 1972 edition showing him spear fishing a grouper. He was also featured in a book called Seven Underwater Wonders of the World in
which he spoke of Belize's "Great Blue Hole" and how his father, and his father's father before him, used to fish there. He was also featured in many interviews and always advocated the necessity of protecting our barrier reef through sustainable fishing.”
