On our peninsula, you might see the Jonkunu dancers in Seine Bight during Christmas week and you can stop by Vern’s Restaurant for some Garifuna dishes. Creole families in Placencia will enjoy a turkey and ham dinner served with rice & beans, stuffing and potato salad followed by black fruit cake laced with rum. Hopefully you will hear some “brukdown” songs like “Good Morning Miss Lady” and other old favourites. The weeks before Christmas are a frenzy of cleaning and hanging new curtains to get ready for visiting family and friends. Veggie vendors will have apples, pears and grapes for special treats and of course, look out for some Rumpopo.

Rotary Club of Placencia, 2015 Haunted House, The Black Pearl The Rotary Club of Placencia, along with Kathy Placencia Anglin, Luci Rotary Club Wallen, Tracy Eiley and many other members of the community put on yet another spectacular Haunted House. By Wanda Stakutis

Many hours went in to the building of this set and the crowd that came through screamed loud and long! Based on the volume of the screams we think it was a success! The work was actually started in August, building props and continued right up to opening night. All told over 40 people were involved and about 500 man hours to create this!

This year the theme was Pirates of the Caribbean and the ghost ship The Black Pearl. For anyone walking by the community center on October 31 they would have noticed the ship crashed into the building.

Rotary Ladies Night

The Placencia Rotary Club hosted the “Crimson Sunset” ladies night gala on Saturday, November 14th at the Tipsy Tuna Seaside & Sports Bar. This was the second year for this event and with the change of venue they were able to accommodate 130 ladies along with 45 volunteers. Due to the constant downpour of rain, the only sun we saw was visual on our beautiful sunset mural (designed and painted by Kashana Tonozzi ). Sal & Gillian, owners of the Tipsy Tuna, worked tirelessly the entire day to insure that our guests were dry & comfortable. There were 11 local businesses

Inside, there were ghost pirates and other ghouls to scare young and old alike. A desert island came complete with a reluctant bride and a mean pirate. There was a cave and of course the inside of the ship including a brig, galley and captain’s quarters.

set up with vendor table’s along with an array of business cards from other local businesses. The demonstrations done by BB Yoga Flow, Miss Agnes BalawejderBusch, Jarka Tesnerova, Christina DiGammarco, Jan Knight, Nikki Wildman, Nicole Harvalik , Zumba with Nicole Havarlik & Severine Aragon and Belly Dancing by Wendy Lewis were absolutely stunning. We were also treated to a guest appearance from Titteman, the Cultural Ambassador Of Belize. We listened to the story of Tiffanie Westby along with an informative talk from Lyra Sprang from Taste

Belize Tours. The DJ for the evening was BeBe along with solos by Miss Vannie Ferrel. The MakeOver Queen this year was Marjorie Tucker who was treated to a manicure by Antonette Westby from Tips & Toes, pedicure from Z-Touch, make-up by Bev Brooks & hair styling by Lindsay Moore. She also received a beautiful shawl designed by Kathy Johnson from Bliss Boutique and a gorgeous necklace & earring set. She looked beautiful. Everyone was treated to a wonderful array of tasty treats from a chocolate fountain, trays of fruit and veggie, chicken wings

and cupcakes. The whole evening was topped off with a beautiful fashion show which was a tribute this year to Miss Mary Allyson Smith and called “Ally’s Alley”. The show was commentated by Dave Diffendal & Lindsay Moore. We imported our terrific models from Placencia Village and with the help from Kathy Johnston from Bliss Boutique, Anna from Anna’s Fashion Boutique and Crystal from Strike-A-Pose, they were able to show you that shopping here in the village is a great experience. The ladies arrived in their most beautiful gowns and partied into the night. Big thanks to everyone who helped to make this evening such a big success. By Lynne O’Brien

Placencia’s Future Shines Bright By Shaylene Todd

The ground breaking ceremony for Itz’ana Resort and Residences brought with it a welcome slice of sunshine as it marked the official launch of construction for the up and coming ocean front hotel. Mrs. Kim Simpliss, First Lady to Prime Minister Dean Barrow, attended as an esteemed guest and longtime supporter of the project. She gave a heartfelt speech and shoveled the first bit of concrete onto the construction site alongside valued investor, Fernando Piaz, who is currently building five Hyatts in Central America. Conceptualized by the Foundry Collective, Itz’ana will be the sister beach resort to the Belizean inland adventure hotel, Ka’ana, best known for infusing luxury with adventure and local culture with design. On Wednesday, the Itz’ana team opened their exquisite model home to residents with enthusiasm and pride. The beautifully designed two bedroom villa by Roberto De Olivia Castro boasts high ceilings and beach chic furnishings by Samuel Amoia. Guests were also invited to explore the future resort grounds and indulge in local culinary delights by renowned chef Mara Jernigan. Lagoon side residences are now available for purchase and offer a passive rental income with a side of adventure and luxury. Prior to their anticipated completion in early 2017, you’re invited to reserve a seat at one of their Pop-up Limilita dinners or visit the sales office at mile 20 on Placencia Road. Visit www.itzanabelize.com for more information on this project and the Pop-Ups.

Tasting Belize One Tour at a Time By Shaylene Todd

Having spent her first 18 years working on the family cacao farm, there really is no better person to guide you to Ixcacao Chocolate. You will spend the morning picking, roasting, grinding, moulding, and finally eating your own chocolate made right from the pod. In addition to sucking the delicious pulp from the cacao beans, you’ll be privileged to enjoy a hot cup of natural cocoa and a lunch of chocolate chicken and fried cassava. All of this is prepared by the personable Mayan owners, Abelina aka “The Chocolate Queen” and Juan, who work handson with you to prepare the chocolate you’ll take home as a souvenir.

Whether it’s chocolate, coffee, hot sauce, bittas, or a homemade dish made by native hands, our food is a reflection of the diversity of our nation. From the fruits, vegetables, herbs, and seafood that flourish around us, to traditional preparation methods, our Belizean identity can be discovered and experienced through taste. In an effort to ‘transcend the restaurant experience’, Lyra Spang, local tour guide and founder of Taste Belize, has created a menu of delicious tours that explore the diverse ecosystems, cultures, and customs that form our culinary identity. Whether you’re a local Belizean, a long-time resident, or visiting, these tours use food to connect you with While chocolate is in her blood, Lyra`s interests the history and people of Belize. and tour offerings extend far beyond that. You can spend the day with the enchanting Ms. Gloria, a Garifuna lady with an infectious smile. She will guide you through making your very own bowl of Hudut; a savory fish stew with a creamy coconut base that is a staple in the Garifuna menu. You will pick the basil, husk the coconuts, peel and mash the plantains, stoke the fire hearth, and set the table with banana leaves. Ms. Gloria`s love for cooking and patient manner will keep your hands busy and your mouth watering. a local meal cooked by you! On a mission to support fair trade, local businesses, and farm-to-table initiatives, Taste Belize offers each of us the opportunity to experience and understand the food culture of Belize. All of these tours are a joyride for more than just the taste buds. In addition to having a great meal or scrumptious treat, you’re on the farms, in the homes, and having an intimate experience with Belizeans over a Creole, Mayan, or Garifuna fire. As her website states, “You haven’t experienced our country until you Taste Belize!” Lyra was the first to bring food and culture tours to Placencia and is always working to ensure Taste Belize tour offerings are as diverse as our bountiful country. This Festive Season, Be A Human Being Not A Rescue Cat door I’ve just cracked open. They bowl each other over in the race to be first to the breakfast kibble. There is some head-butting and some half-hearted hissing but soon the kerfuffle settles into the steady munching-crunching-slurpingburping of rescue cats greedily filling their none-too-small bellies. Animals who have sniffed starvation are never slow to eat. And for their owners, restricting the intake of our darling gluttons is something we wrestle with daily.

They say a mother is acutely sensitive to the sound of her own baby crying. Pet owners know this to be true. A soft, pleading meow outside my window in the pre-dawn hour breaks my sleep. A minute later, the dawdling rhythm of the morning is lost to the percussion of two cats bursting through the

The Placencia Breeze December 2015

4th End of the World Marathon December 6, 2015! This will be the fourth time Placencia will Placencia be hosting the Rotary Club End of the World Marathon. Organizer Chip Lovett is very pleased with how things are coming along. There will be over 100 runners from all around Belize and the World! By Wanda Stakutis

There will be an additional station featuring Garifuna culture in Seine Bight. Also keep your eyes open for the Rotary Scholarship students who will be helping at many of the stations. As always, there will be a “judge mobile” and professional water station judges.

All proceeds from the Marathon go to the Rotary Club of Placencia Scholarship program. This year we have 21 high school students and 4 6th Form students.

As in the past, the water stations are not your normal water stations with water being passed out. In true Placencia fashion, the water stations are interactive and each one has a different theme. The runners have come to enjoy this part of the event almost a such as running! For the past two years the Maya Beach Bistro has taken first prize. Who knows who will win this year!

Please come out and cheer the runners on! The race starts at 5:30 AM, in Placencia for the full marathon and at Caribbean Way at 5:30AM for the half marathon.

Lionfish Event A Success! The Southern Environmental Association (SEA) held a Lionfish Hunting Event on Friday November 20th, 2015 in Placencia Village with the support of Oceana, A Belizean Nirvana and MNM Service Station. Fishermen and Tour Guides with Sunny Side Tours braved the rough seas and brought in 246 lionfish in three dives within and around the protected areas in the southern barrier reef including Gladden Spit & Silk Cayes Marine Reserve and Laughing Brid Caye National Park. The beautiful red lionfish (Pterois volitans) is not native to Belize and are an ideal species for aquariums around the world. Its voracious nature has been no match for the marine ecosystem in the Atlantic when it was accidentally introduced in the 1990s. These predatory fishes possess many characteristics that makes them particularly successful invaders, including rapid growth and maturation, high reproductive rates, eighteen (18) defensive venomous spines and no proven natural predators. In 2011 SEA in collaboration with Blue Ventures, initiated the exhilarating Lion Fish Hunt as an effort to curb the numbers inhabiting the reef of Belize. Over the past four years over a thousand pounds have been fished from the southern waters during the competition with the filleted meat sold with the proceeds used for protected areas management. The Lionfish caught in this event will be used at SEA’s Fund Raising Evening with David Shaw, scheduled for Saturday, December 5th, 2015 at Turtle Inn, Placencia. All are invited to attend. For more information on tickets, contact the Southern Environmental Association at 523-3377/3501, or see our website www.seabelize.org
