and needed my full-time attention. At the same time, the BTIA decided to expand the Breeze into a monthly newspaper. Wende took over the by Risa Frackman expansion and has nurtured it into the publication It was late summer 1997. My late husband Bob it is today. But I’m happy to see that many of the Frackman and I, the original owners/founders features we started 20 years ago remain, along of Robert’s Grove, went up to Belize City for a with other timely articles and peninsula news. national BTIA meeting. Although Wende Bryan, president of the Placencia chapter at the time and I had crossed paths a number of times, this was the first occasion we really bonded– over drinks at the Biltmore, where we were both staying. After laughing until we couldn’t breathe, we started chatting about the peninsula. Since I had a background in Public Relations, Wende asked me what I thought the BTIA could do to help visitors. My answer was swift. “I think we need some sort of newsletter describing what is going on – restaurants, hotels, events, activities, attractions, etc.,” I said. It seemed to me that our peninsula was starting to grow and offering a greater variety of entertainments, but nobody visiting had any way of knowing what was available beyond the hotel they were staying at. After all, in 1997, internet technology was just getting off the ground and communication was minimal at best. Wende said she had been thinking the same thing. At that point, I volunteered to write/edit a four-page newsletter, to be published quarterly, under the banner of the BTIA – as long as Wende agreed to be my guide to people, places, things. Bob and I had only been in Placencia for a year. And so, the vision for The Placencia Breeze was hatched. As soon as I got back to Robert’s Grove, which at the time had only two guest rooms, I began writing and designing. Over more laughs and I’m sure many more drinks, Wende and I created the first issue, which I suggested we call The Placencia Breeze. Of course, I had no idea that “Placencia Breeze” had another meaning and Wende was concerned that Coral Bevier, the grande dame of Rum Point Inn would disapprove. But everyone turned out to be on the same page and by Christmas that year, tourists had their own guide to all the joys of the peninsula. I continued to write/edit the Breeze for two years. But by 2000, Robert’s Grove was growing

One of the CRC’s greatest passion is the development of the next generation of Belize’s leaders in conservation and wildlife. In 2016 we started the Next Gen Croc program in Caye Caulker training high school students to conduct monthly crocodile population surveys. The data collected by the students is analyzed together with the CRC so the students can make their own report to the Belize Forest Department about the status of crocodiles and habitat in their community as well as make conservation recommendations. We have graduated our first class and are working on developing the next round of conservation croc-stars. Starting in October we also began working on developing our Next Gen Croc Placencia program. Our first member is Lucas, a student at the Peninsula International Academy (PIA). Lucas is 12 years old and his conservation story is near and dear to our hearts. He is inspired by having grown up watching

Steve Irwin and is interested in the conservation of crocodiles and wildlife in general. As part of his school program he is an official CRC intern and will be working with us to kick start our Next Gen Croc program on the peninsula. As part of his work with us, he is learning to conduct biodiversity surveys of the Placencia Lagoon, about crocodile biology and ecology, collecting crocodile population survey data, and some GIS work involving mapping. He has also already been a huge help in our education and outreach and was a part of our team at the Boo at the Zoo event hosted by The Belize Zoo in October. We are very excited to see him become a conservation leader in this community and are chomping at the bit to get the program fully up and running in Placencia. Stay tuned for more updates on our Next Gen Croc program in Placencia and the great work being done by our young, local conservation leaders.

From the Fire Hearth: All Fruits Ripe This month’s column marks a year since I started writing From the Fire Hearth for our little local newspaper. We hope you have been enjoying reading it! Last December 2016 I talked about different kinds of foods common during the season, from rum po po to rice pudding and baked gibnut to cowfoot soup. This year I want to highlight Belize’s signature Christmas treat, fruit cake. Fruit cakes are an essential component of the Christmas experience in Belize. Associated initially with British colonialism and the Creole culture, Belizeans of all backgrounds now make and look forward to delicious cake for the Christmas season. In many communities and families, certain bakers, usually women, are considered the best. Orders for cake will be placed many weeks before the actual Christmas holiday and cake baking is a brisk business during the month of December. No jokes about leaden fruit cakes in our country! Most bakers will make two fruit cakes, one light in color and thus named “white cake” and one colored black with caramel coloring, the aptly named “black cake”. Black cake is the most famous Christmas fruit cake across the land. Airplanes full of fruit cakes crisscross the country with a special cake label on the box with families eagerly anticipating their arrival. Many decades ago in Placencia, some Creole ladies would candy papaya and citrus for their black cakes and use local cashew seeds hand roasted in their yards to provide a rich

nuttiness to the finished product. The black color of the cake was achieved by burning sugar to a dark deep hue. Today it’s almost impossible to find a black cake made without imported pecans or walnuts and garishly dyed citrus peel and maraschino cherries. Store bought caramel coloring completes the picture. Yet the rich rum laced flavor and dense moist texture of a proper black cake continues to be an essential part of any Belizean Christmas. This is not a cake for the timid or the teetotaler! Whether store bought or home candied, fruits are soaked in rum, sometimes for months at a time. Dark stout beer is added to the batter as well. Lashings of butter and eggs ensure a rich and moist result and local Belizean brown sugar only enhances the caramel flavor of the “blackening” that colors the cake. Many people also pour a liberal topping of rum onto the warm cakes when they are cooling, ensuring that Christmas festivities will indeed be celebrated with much good cheer.

There may not be snow falling or Jack Frost nipping at your nose, but a big slice of black cake and a snifter of rich rum laced egg nog (Belize’s famous rum po po) will put you into the holiday mood immediately. No wonder they say Santa loves Christmas in the Caribbean best of all! Lyra Spang is owner/guide of Taste Belize Tours, a unique cultural & culinary tour company. She writes about food whenever she can. tastebelize@ gmail.com tastebelize.com

Ingredients:

Ingredients: 9 Eggs 4 Nutmegs (Grated) 1 Oz Cinnamon Stick 1 Pint Colorless Rum 5 Tins Large Evaporated Milk 3 Tins Condensed Milk (Or to taste) ½ Lb. Raisins Directions: Beforehand, soak cinnamon stick and raisins in rum for 2 days. Beat eggs well (15-20 minutes removing beater and rinsing in clean water several times to remove strings or eye of egg). Next, add evaporated milk & beat again. Add condensed milk and check for desired sweetness. Then add grated nutmeg & rum that was used for soaking (be sure to strain before using). Blend the mixture again and store in clean dry bottles. Store the final product in the refrigerator. Shake well before serving. Enjoy!

1 lb. butter 1 pt. stout 1 qt. rum 2 lbs. flour 1 tsp. allspice 3 lbs. brown sugar 1 lb. of each fruit Raisins, Prunes, Currants, Dates, Cherries, Pecans ½ pt. caramel coloring 8 eggs 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. nutmeg Directions: Stew all the fruit with 1 lb. brown sugar and rum. Cook the mixture until the liquid becomes thick syrup. Let the fruits cool overnight. In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter along with 2 lbs. brown sugar and add in eggs one at time. Then add flour, baking powder, all spice, stout and caramel coloring one at a time to the mixture. Lastly, fold the stewed fruit to the mixture. To avoid having the stewed fruit sink to the bottom of the mixture, drain them, mix with 1 beaten egg and dredge in flour before adding it to the batter. Now, line your cake pans with parchment paper and fill about ¾ ways with the batter. Bake at 270˚F for about 3 hours.

Placencia MYSTERY DOG MIRACULOUSLY Humane RESCUED AT SEA! Society On Sunday, 15 October, 20 divers, guests at Belize Ocean Club, were diving a few miles from Pompion Caye. Someone yelled: “Hey, there’s a dog in the water!” He looked weak, paddling around in the middle of the Sea, miles away from land or boat. A diver jumped into the Sea, but the dog began to fearfully swim away. Another attempt was successful, and this pooch was gently lifted into the boat.

The Placencia Breeze December 2017

6 End of the World Marathon th

On Sunday, December 10, at 5:30 AM, more than 250 runners from twelve countries and fourteen US states will participate in the 6th annual End of the World Marathon and Half Marathon. Traversing the length of the Placencia Peninsula, the event promises to be an inspirational and gratifying day for runners, volunteers, visitors, and residents of the peninsula. The EOW team thanks the 140 volunteers, from all of the peninsula communities, who will ensure that everything runs smoothly and that the runners have an extraordinary experience; without them the EOW marathon would not be possible. We look forward to the creative efforts and zany antics of the water station volunteers as they compete for best water station awards. This year we will have more than 20 water stations along the 13.1 mile course. The EOW marathon is helping to foster a culture of endurance running and overall fitness consciousness on the peninsula and throughout the country. EOW has become the culminating running event in Belize following a year of races where winners have earned free EOW registration. During the past year on the Placencia Peninsula there was the Young Runners for Life 5K in February hosted by Seine Bight Unite, the Battle Cancer 5K Walk/Run (June

22nd), and the Swan Villas 5K & 10K in November. Beyond the peninsula there was the inaugural Chiquibul Challenge Marathon & Half Marathon in March, organized by Dr. Isabelle Paquet-Durand and inspired by the EOW marathon and the Hope Project 5K in Dangriga in July. The Seine Bight Girls Running Club, organized by Wanda Stakudis to address the underrepresentation of local girls in athletics, is now in its second year and several young women from the club will be running the half marathon on December 10. A very special thanks to the many event sponsors whose generosity and support not only makes the EOW possible, but will ultimately help educate countless Belizean children. As always, all of the proceeds of the EOW marathon will go to high school scholarships through the Placencia Rotary Club Scholarship Program. EOW funding is currently supporting dozens of Belizean students with four-year scholarships, and the tireless efforts of Rotarians ensure the academic success of the students through individual mentors and sponsors.

We are happy that we have so many boys coming out on Saturday morning in addition to all of the girls! We are still looking to move towards a track and field team as we get more adult volunteers now that the kids are really starting to take running (and jumping and working out) more seriously.

Recently a group of 12 people from all around the US came to Placencia on vacation. They are part of a bigger group called Gobundance. Gobundance is an organization of people who like to travel but believe in packing with a purpose wherever they go. Back in March a member of the group, Patrick Cullinane, contacted Seine Bight Unite and asked what would be needed for the school and kids in Seine Bight. Principal Moreira and the Seine Bight Running Club gave quite a long list. No

one heard back from the group until early November when they said they had arrived and had some of the stuff on the wish list. They went over to St. Alphonsus, met with Miss Moreira and gave her a ton of arts and crafts supplies that were on the wish list. They then presented the school with THREE brand new laptops!! The school had only one old and finicky computer so this very generous gift was greatly appreciated. Not only will the office finally have a working computer but the students

Keri Webber and St. Alphonsus Several years ago, Canadian teacher came to Seine Bight as part of the group of teachers for the Summer Reading Program. As frequently happens, Keri fell in love with Belize, Placencia and Seine Bight, and most importantly, she fell in love with the students at St. Alphonsus. Keri is now teaching full time in Canada at Millwood High School grade 11 and thought that she should share the joy off giving back with her students. “I have this idea for my English class that I am teaching this year. We have a school goal at my school to become more culturally responsive and aware. When I was there two years ago it really moved me to see how amazing the students and community members were. It excited me to see the children interested in learning and how different schooling and living is compared to where I come from. I felt like it is so important for our new and upcoming

generation to learn about other cultures and be able to connect to each other.”. This thought of Keri’s led to her starting her students, and other students in the school, on a fund-raising program. They have been selling hot chocolate with marshmallows or candy canes and had an event that is popular in Canada called “human vs. Zombies that they charged $10 admission to. They have raised quite a bit of money and have a goal to reach of purchasing a laptop for the school. Additionally, they are trying to get a pen pal program going between the two schools! Her students are looking to do something meaningful. Her students had so many questions about the students here and are genuinely excited and interested to learn more about them. Thank you, Keri, for your love of the children here and sharing that with your students up North.

Young Runners for Life

The 4th and final race of the year has been run for the Young Runners for Life series of races. This last race was combined with the annual Swan Villa 5K/10K and it was a fantastic race. The older students who ran, most of whom are registered for the Half Marathon, were required to run a 10K this time. The results of the four races are still being tabulated but we expect to have the award ceremony for the winners in each category by early December.

Zumba and Teens The teens in Seine Bight love Zumba. They come every Wednesday to the class taught by Nicole Harvalik when their school schedule allows. But as with all teens they want to put their own twist on it. What they want to do is put together their own music from songs that they like and make them feel good, and start their own Zumba class. They have asked Nicole to help

now have the beginnings of a computer lab (more computers and other equipment is still needed to make that happen). Several days later they came to running practice and turned over to the running club 29 pairs of brand new adult size running shoes donated by the manufacturer LALO. The shoes will be given to the teens and young adults from the running club signed up for the End of the World Marathon. Thank you so much Gobundance for your extreme generosity!!!

them with the choreography as Zumba is not just dance but a form of exercise and getting the right moves put together is very important. Nicole is more than happy to do this and updates will be posted on Facebook as this new venture moves forward. Many thanks to Nicole for donating her time and energy to the students in Seine Bight, both primary school and high school.

Mark (Mawi) Leslie - Sunrise: November 11, 1968 Sunset: November 10, 2017 Mark Leslie and his common-in-law wife, Myrna Vasquez lost their lives in a tragic road accident November 10th. They will be greatly missed by family, friends and the community.

"Marks greatest love was the sea. It was there that he was most peaceful, even in the midst of his struggles, ad his passion for the marine world was apparent on every tour he guided. His love of his country and its natural beauty made him a famous ambassador for Belize."
