PLACENCIA Breeze A Placencia BTIA Publication
Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival February 11th & 12th New Artists, Chocolate Making, Art Auction and More! For over a decade the Placencia Sidewalk Arts Festival has brought together Belize’s top artists and those people, local and foreign, who appreciate the work they do so well. This year’s festival, through the sponsorship of Naïa Resort and Spa, will be adding a new dimension to the annual event. “Art After Dark” is a gala dinner that is honouring six painters from the Placencia Peninsula who have left their mark on Belize’s cultural scene. Not only will attendees get to meet, dine and forge relationships with the honourees, Anton Leslie, Earnest Garcia, Greta Leslie, Lola Delgado plus Omar and Grayson Sierra, but will also be able to bid on their latest works in a silent auction. Naïa invites you to join them on Saturday, February 11, at Naïa’s restaurant “1981” for what will certainly be a night of good food, good company and great art. Seating is limited so please purchase your tickets early so you won’t be left out. One of the highlights of the Festival will be the demonstration of Maya chocolate making by Ixcacao on Saturday at 11:30am and 2:30pm under the main tent by the PVC Old Master Bar. Mayan Pride will be selling Mayan Cuisine such as tamales, corn tortillas with chicken caldo
and corn tortillas with heart of palm. They will also have a booth selling plants and pottery. Nationally and internationally known artists such as Walter Castillo, Gilvano Swasey, Pen Cayetano and Kelvin Baizar of Depiction Paintings will also be showing their work. Jack Dooley, Emmit Young, Allie’s Beach Worn Seaglass Jewelery, Tanisha Burgess and Kim Wedemeyer are just a few of the talented artists that will have booths. Also along the sidewalk are many jewelery, wood carvings and art shops The contest for the Placencia Lobsterfest artwork will take place on Saturday at 4pm at the Placencia Tourism Center booth, all artwork must be dropped off at their booth by noon on Saturday. The winner’s artwork might be used for the BTIA T-shirt and marketing if suitable. On Sunday, after strolling the sidewalk, the Placencia Village Council is having a Sunday Funday at their bar sponsored by Old Master Rums starting at 1pm. Old Master will have their electronic bull riding challenge with prizes. Miss Deb’s food truck will be on hand with Baby Back Ribs as a special along with many other booths in the Food Court.

Village will be graced with their presence this month, at the Placencia Sidewalk Arts Festival. Look for their table Saturday, February 11th at the main tent on the beach, where they will be doing chocolate making demonstrations on their heirloom stone tools at 11:30 and 2:30 PM. Enjoy samples, load up on chocolate trivia and plan your trip down south for their famous tree-to-bar chocolate tour.
February, that sacred month of pink heart shaped cards and boxes of decadent treats, is a good time to write about chocolate. And not only because savvy marketers link sweets with love. February falls smack in the middle of Belize’s cacao harvest. Across southern Belize, farmers are inspecting their cacao tree orchards and hand picking pods filled with the seeds that will become Valentine’s Day’s favorite candy. Today Belize is known for producing some of the most delicious cacao beans in the world. Fine chocolate makers across the planet are flocking to our little jewel hoping to get their hands on some cacao. Prices are rising and farmers are benefiting from international attention, but this is nothing new for our part of the world. Cacao became a luxury good in Central America thousands of years ago and the Maya city states in our region grew and traded this sought after treat via long distance trading routes that
landed beans as far north as Arizona. The seeds of the cacao tree were so valuable that up until the arrival of the Spanish, people across Central America and into Mexico used them as a default currency. Poor people traded this money that grew on trees instead of drinking up their savings. Consuming chocolate beverages everyday was a sign of wealth in a world with no metal currency. After the apocalypse of European conquest, the surviving Maya peoples continued to cultivate cacao for home consumption, serving it for special feast days, engagement parties and weddings, a practice that continues to this day. With the founding of a farmers cooperative, the Toledo Cacao Growers
Association (TCGA) in 1984, Belize’s modern cacao commerce began. Maya family farms continue to form the backbone of this increasingly diverse and dynamic industry. In the last 14 years a number of small chocolate companies have opened in Belize. Here on Placencia Peninsula, Goss Chocolate Company uses TCGA grown certified organic cacao beans to produce their chocolate bars, cacao nibs and cacao powder which can be found in stores across the peninsula. On the mainland in Maya Centre Village at the entrance to the famed Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve, tiny Che’il Chocolate produces both dark and milk chocolates from local beans. Further south in Toledo District we
enter the heart of Belize’s chocolate trails, where over 90% of the country’s cacao is cultivated. Cotton Tree Chocolate operates out of a small facility in Punta Gorda Town. Not far away, in the Kekchi Maya community of San Felipe, Ixcacao Chocolate, a Belizean Maya family enterprise, produces some of Belize’s best dark chocolate, using organic, farm to table production techniques and sustainable farming systems. Croc Corner Dr. Marisa Tellez
The Crocodile Research Coalition has been in full swing since the start of the new year, surveying multiple portions of the Sittee River for our Belize Nationwide Morelet’s Population survey, conducting our weekly biodiversity surveys and crocodile behavior observations, and continuing our educational outreach programs. We also have been coordinating with St. Alphonsus in addition to other youth along the peninsula to commence our Next Gen Croc program, which will include mentoring students in the field of conservation biology that includes assisting us during our wildlife surveys, as well as providing an environmental educational component to monthly wildlife outings. If anyone is interested in learning more about the development of the Placencia Next Gen Croc program, or helping the CRC sustain this program, please contact the CRC via email at program.coordinator@ crcbelize.org or message us on facebook for more information.

And if you ever wanted to learn more about crocodiles and other apex predators of Belize, come visit the CRC along with members from The Belize Zoo and the Belize Raptor Center from San Ignacio at the Placencia Artwalk next month! We will have plenty of fun educational material and games for kids of all ages to engage everyone in learning more about the majestic wildlife we have here in Belize, and how you can be a Wildlife Hero, ensuring these species are conserved for future generations to come! The CRC has recently received three reports of poached American crocodiles around the Placencia Peninsula. The killing of crocodiles for any reason is illegal in Belize, and the Forest Department is planning to have a regular presence along the peninsula to further regulation and protection of crocodiles and other wildlife. Many animals, including fish, have been known to disappear when crocodilians are removed from an area due to crocodiles controlling their populations and modifying habitat in ways other species utilize. Naïa is Peninsula’s Newest Luxury Resort Placencia BTIA Membership Spotlight
What makes Naïa unique are a number of factors. The site, for one, is unlike any other on the peninsula. Most of the native foliage was left untouched and where alterations were made—deftly, by veteran landscaper Sarah Robinson—they complement the existing vegetation rather than overwhelming it.
Construction started quietly in February 2015 and while at its peak close to 200 workers labored daily on the project the building of Placencia’s newest resort took place largely under the radar. But Naïa is hidden no longer.
Interspersed between those beachfront palmettos, cocoplum, craboo and sea grapes are 30 studio and one bedroom units designed by longtime peninsula architect Andrea Bacher. The spacious bungalows all feature outside garden showers, oversized tubs, original artwork and fine hardwood furniture. Six have their own plunge pools. For families, five two and three bedroom houses offer full kitchens and expansive decks.
Following a soft launch in October Naïa Resort and Spa formally opened its doors on January 7. And if early reviews are any indicator the luxury property will soon take its place among the country’s most popular overnight destinations. With 35 individual “beach houses”, three restaurants, eight pools and a spa that must be seen to be believed, Naïa takes its place among the region’s growing number of luxury offerings. But in Placencia “high end” does not necessarily mean “hoity-toity”. “The vibe at Naïa is as friendly and personal as your smallest guest house,” says Naïa’s managing director Stewart Krohn. “A hotel can have all the fancy amenities in the world but if the staff is not in sync with the broader vision it will never quite live up to expectations”. And that vision is 100% Belizean. According to Krohn, Naïa’s investment group has been together since 1982 and made its mark in Belize City with the development of Channel 5, Belize’s first local television station. Having lived and worked in Placencia in 1973 the journalist-turned-developer knew that it was only a matter of time until he returned. After successfully completing a pair of small subdivisions on the peninsula and building a weekend beach house in the mid 90’s, the turning point came with two unrelated events in 2001.
“You had the terror attacks on September 11th and people thought that Americans would never again get on airplanes,” recalls Krohn. “Then less than a month later Hurricane Iris obliterated the peninsula leaving behind nothing but rubble and despair.”
When a 254 acre beach-to-lagoon parcel became available the company mortgaged all its assets and took the plunge. The result was Cocoplum, a master planned residential community at mile 17.5. And while the global recession delayed the development of It turned out to be a good time to Cocoplum’s 19 acre resort core, the wait was well worth it. buy real estate.

And while Naïa/Cocoplum’s nearly mile long beach attracts the marine enthusiasts it is Naïa’s spa that has visitors coming back for more. With five single and one couple’s treatment rooms, manicure/ pedicure salon, private pool and its own “Reflections“ café, the 7,000-square foot facility is spread out over a series of jungle covered islands in the middle of a fresh water lagoon that can only be described as breathtaking. An amazing movement studio (offering aerial and other yoga classes) and well equipped fitness center round out the spa’s incredible environment. The spa, as well as Naïa’s signature restaurant “1981”, are rapidly gaining notoriety both locally and internationally and are open to the public. Amik Kil Ha’ in Maya Beach By Amanda Harris Our connection with Belize began 30 years ago when my husband Jim made a connection with Bob Gayer, a visionary met through his law practice in Vancouver, Canada. Bob was the original owner and developer of Maya Beach in the mid-60’s when he purchased a huge swath of land from just south of Coco Plum, north to just south of the Belize Ocean Club. Bob was about 50 years ahead of his time; he imagined shops, schools, luxury hotels with heli-pads and a thriving community that did not materialize in his lifetime. Beavers Away! Based on true story of beavers being parachuted into the Idaho wilderness in 1948, it is packed with interesting info about beavers, their critical role as a keystone species and ecosystem engineers, and how they can help in the fight against climate change. Beavers Away! is a great gift for kids of all ages! It is available at itascabooks.com, amazon. com, Water Street Books in Williamstown, MA, A great book by Jennifer Lovett, one of Maya Beach’s part time residents.
We now own Plantation Palms Limited, Bob’s original company which he incorporated in 1964 in what was then British Honduras. We are developing part of the land it still holds which was subdivided in 1968. We have named our development Amik Kil Ha’, which is a rough translation from Q’eqchi’ Mayan meaning ‘Friendly Waters’. Our development is located across from
the fabulous Maya Beach Bistro, in behind A.L. Construction. We currently have 24 waterfront lots for sale. Each one borders a 40 foot wide canal that lead out to the gorgeous and rich Placencia Lagoon which is home to manatees, and many fish and birds. Friendly Waters is a true summation of the development. It is peaceful, full of wildlife, has gorgeous trees, calm channels of water, and, being tucked away from the main road, is very quiet. The views of the Mayan Mountains are spectacular and the sunsets bathe Amik Kil Ha’ in a golden light that is gorgeous and soothing. We are working to create a community at Amik Kil Ha’. We are not encouraging people to purchase lots to hold for an investment. Amik Kil Ha’ will be a place where people live; either renting, owning or vacationing. A place of energy and life! Within a 5 minute walk or bike ride, one finds restaurants, cafe’s,a bowling alley, groceries, bars, a gym and more! Maya Beach is an established community 8 miles north of the tip of the Placencia Peninsula, which many people call home, both full or part time. We have a stunning bamboo house for sale, as well as bare serviced lots for you to dream your own dream home on!

And Eve Said “To Hell with GOD” This book was written for adult readers as it deals with the various reasons why so many marriages and relationships fail. The author, Sal Rivers, proposes several theories on the reasons why, beginning with the existence of a female Goddess, present at creation as to why the men and women are ensnared in the “battle of the sexes” today. The readers can actually go on the Publisher's website, Archway Publishing.com or Amazon.com and read the introduction, preface, table of contents and the first two chapters without commitment. Sal Rivers is a part time resident of Placencia.

Zumba!
Zumba was introduced to Placencia 5 years ago, by Yolanda Brown who started out holding small classes for friends at her house and eventually launched the very popular Zumba Dance Party at Tipsy Tuna on Friday nights. I instantly gravitated to her style of Zumba and became her ardent student, taking over when she left. I continued Friday nights at Tipsy Tuna and added a weekly class at the Placencia Community Center. Yolie returns each winter and between the two of us we offer several classes a week, free of charge and open to everyone.
If you want to get in shape, but jogging or the gym are not for you, consider taking Zumba classes. Zumba is a fun, vigorous mix of dance moves inspired by Latin, African, Indian, and Hip Hop dance styles. Its choreography is repetitive but varied to keep your interest while making routines easy to learn. It’s ideal for any level because you can vary the intensity by adjusting your level of effort. You can step or jump, use your arms or drop them, and really accentuate each move for the greatest Please contact Nicole at impact.

The SEA NN SPAGS!
By Roneisha Williams Have you ever heard the word SPAGS or why they are important to our fishing industry? Here’s a tip for you. Belize is blessed with several reef fish spawning aggregation sites (SPAGS). Spawning aggregation is a predictable gathering of adult fishes for the purpose of reproduction. Many species of economically important coral reef fishes form spawning aggregations, creating an amazing spectacle that can consist of tens to thousands of fish. In Belize this usually happens during the full moon of specific months. The Nassau grouper is one of the larger fish to be found around coral

in the entire country of Belize that allows fishing. Traditional fishermen from stakeholder communities around Placencia must meet several criteria to obtain a Special Fishing License from the Fisheries Department to be able to fish in this SPAGS site. Southern Environmental Association (SEA) Rangers carry out several patrols, especially during spags time, to ensure compliance with fisheries laws and prevent illegal fishing. So this coming full moon, remember, there are fishes spawning and aggregating somewhere near you. Kindly also be reminded of the closed season for Nassau Grouper which extends from 1st December to 31st March every year. Learn more and practice sustainable fishing because our livelihood depends on it!

Mandy and Shawn Marshall took me in!
What I do know, though, is I was hit by a car. I had a broken leg, and I wandered around Maya Beach, starving. My tank was running on broken leg was not infected, and I was not in pain. empty. But someone saw me, and in I overheard Judy telling Kenny: that moment, my life changed “What a very gentle dog. She is not completely and forever. I survive at all aggressive, and her eyes talk today because that one person cared to us, Kenny. Her eyes are shouting enough about me to alert others to out at us: HELP ME!” my situation.
And they named me “Princess!”
This kind person phoned Pat VanDuerzen, begging: please could Dr. Floyd Bennett help me when he came to Placencia during his next vet visit?
How lucky that Dr. Cliff Barnett from Florida had a vet clinic in Cow Pen Village that weekend. Kenny drove me over there and my leg was amputated.
Mandy speaks: “Princess is the sweetest dog ever, she taught me how animals need dignity as well. When she first arrived, she couldn't even squat without falling into her own mess and was so shy about me cleaning her. She would lean against me when we walked as if I was her missing leg and climbing stairs was the best therapy for her. Madge (our PHS rescued dog) and I would sit one or two steps ahead of her and encourage her until we made it to the top. Princess brought Madge out of her shell as well. Placencia Rotary Events The Rotary Club of Placencia had a very successful Winter Olympics. After a bit of a wet start the blue sky and sunshine arrived to make for a fabulous day on the beach.
The events were Team Cross Country Skiing, Dog Sled Racing and Poke a Snowman in the morning. The afternoon events were Individual Cross Country Skiing, Coconut Curling and, of course, our infamous Human Foosball. The Foosball Court was modified to a longer length and received many compliments. After a day of fierce competition and fun, the results are in. The Biggest Losers are "The Birthday Party of Five" aka The Glitter Team. Coming in a very close second is Tropic Air. The Champions of the 2017 Rotary Winter Olympic Games is Island Pool Supply!! We had a lot of fun hosting this event and look forward to the Summer Beach Olympics coming up. Speaking of events coming up the Rotary Club of Placencia is now hard at work organizing our Annual Rotary Auction. Tipsy Tuna will be hosting this exciting event on Saturday, February 4, 2017. Viewing of auction items starts at 5:00 with the Live Auction starting
at 7:00. Also, included in this event is a large Raffle and the ever-popular Silent Auction. Drop by Tipsy Tuna on the 4th for your opportunity to bid on fantastic items and services donated by local businesses and individuals. Honorary Rotarian, Chip Lovett presenting to Rotary Scholarship Committee a cheque for $28,400.68!! This is the proceeds from The End of the World Marathon that Chip organizes every year.
