ChaChi’s: The Placencia Haven for Musicians Placencia BTIA Membership Spotlight

by Jolie Pollard Some are motionless, others are swinging their hips, but one thing is for certain, the audience on the upper deck at Cha Chi’s located along the newly emerging restaurant row next to Tutti Frutti and Rumfish y Vino, is transfixed by a powerful stage presence. A paranda band, “Zero Tolerance” visiting Placencia from Hopkins is playing the soulful and sensual form of Garifuna rhythms and many would attest that they have never heard music quality so sweet on the Placencia Peninsula. “It’s not just anyone who can make you sound as clean and neat as the guys at Cha Chi’s,” said the young Garifuna paranda artist and Zero-Tolerance lead singer Clayton “C-Wills” Williams. The 26-year-old Hopkins native who travels and plays both locally and internationally, and who has also performed with celebrated Honduran paranda artist Auerlio Martinez, said he looks forward to every invitation to play at the hottest new music spot in Placencia. “You know, Stephen just blends in with our Garifuna culture when he joins us on drums. He’s a really cool guy,” said Williams, referring to the live music venue and pizzeria’s namesake.

They’ve truly brought this part of the Placencia Main Street to life,” said McGroarty who has been visiting the village since 2014. “Anybody can play music, but it takes someone really special to present it so well,” added Smith. Cha Chi’s has also found a special space in the heart of several Placencia musicians including 23-year-old Kylon Eiley who recently released his first single, “Sailing.” “Right now it’s one of my favorite places to play music in Belize because it’s a place that is run by musicians, and I always try to get close to people like that because they know a lot.” Eiley, who is currently studying dentistry in Mexico, says he especially enjoys playing for his family and friends at the venue. “They come to see me every time and even my dad (George “Judge” Eiley) plays from time to time. We always have a blast and having them there is always so important to me,” said Eiley. “I really hope more people come to see what’s happening at Cha Chi’s.” For Mitchell, two-years of personal sacrifice for the new chapter of his life in Belize has not come without its trials, but he stays on course with the reminder of his true artist’s calling. “This is our opportunity to play music from the heart.”

Croc Corner Be a Wildlife ChampionProtect our Wildlife and End Wildlife Crime by Dr. Marisa Tellez

Protecting our wildlife goes beyond the wildlife itself; protecting wildlife and the habitat in which they live enhance our way of living. Healthier environments = healthier and stable wildlife populations = improved livelihoods among communities who utilize wildlife for food, eco-tourism and other resources. Exploiting, overharvesting, or unmanaged illegal hunting of animals eventually leads to extinction, which can have a serious negative impact on the population stability and health of other wildlife and the local community that depends on the environment for their own livelihood. Belize has been a leader and continues to be a leader in wildlife protection, collaborating with various NGO’s

and international researchers to obtain the data needed to implement the most appropriate conservation action as well as educational outreach programs to ensure or improve human– wildlife relations. Unfortunately, with the height of tourist season, much of the wildlife in Belize faces a heighten danger as illegal hunters kill various animals, such as jaguars, crocodiles, ocelots and parrots (just to name a few) to sell wildlife parts as jewelry or home décor. IT IS ILLEGAL TO SELL ANY WILDLIFE PARTS IN BELIZE. Jaguar tooth necklaces, scarlet macaw feathers, crocodile teeth earrings ARE NOT LEGAL TO SELL, and the sale of such wildlife products can lead to prosecution in Belize (not to mention charges by customs

in other countries if such wildlife products are found in tourist luggage upon their return home). Additionally, the HANDLING OF WILDLIFE DURING TOURS is illegal and can lead to the death of an animal- either the animal habituates to humans, becomes aggressive and must be killed, or habituates to humans and is an easy catch for illegal hunters. So, what can YOU do to help our wildlife and become a Wildlife Champion? If you see the sale of wildlife products or know of tours harassing wildlife (such as through handling

of

wildlife),

please

inform the police, contact Forest Department (533-3014 or 8221524), or a local NGO. And don’t forget to empower your neighbors and visitors with the knowledge about our wildlife and laws! With your help, you can ensure that the environment and wildlife remains healthy for future generations in Belize. Crocodile Research Coalition crocodileresearchcoalition.org

From the Fire Hearth: Sweets Up! by Lyra Spang

European connections to fashion wheat flour into an array of baked goods. Lemon merengue and coconut pies and tarts are the two classic flavours although I hope one day soon to sample pies using some of our other tropical fruits as well. Don’t miss Merl’s Café next to Yolis Bar for a delicious lemon merengue pie or whatever other sweets she has available!

From potato pound to lemon merengue pie, cuttobrutte to stew pumpkin, cheap and plentiful sugar from the sugarcane fields of northern Belize guides our taste buds. Many bakers prefer our brown sugar which North Americans would call raw or turbinado sugar as it has never gone through a bleaching process. Some classic desserts are

best when baked the traditional way-in a cast iron pot over a wood or coconut husk burning fire hearth. Potato pound and cassava cake are two of these. The sweet potato or cassava root is finely grated and mixed with rich fresh made coconut milk, lots of brown sugar and grated ginger root. The starches in these root vegetables cause the mixture to thicken as it is baked so it can be cut into squares. The best pieces of course are from the edges, where the sugar has caramelized against the hot cast iron and the coconut milk, sugar and ginger have melded together to luscious effect. Both of these delicacies are sold out of Tupperware containers around Placencia and Seine Bight Villages. Cassava cake is often called “plastic cake” for the translucent appearance and slightly chewy/rubbery texture of the sweet. Bread pudding is another favorite in households that have stale bread to put to use. Moving beyond puddings, pies and tarts are popular in Placencia Village, where Belizean Kriol culture channels its

Ah February. The end of lobster season coincides with Valentine’s Day, what some consider the sweetest day of the year. Here in Belize we are a nation of sugar addicts. From an early age toddlers suck on sweets from the shop or sample sugary soft drinks out of their baby bottle. Diabetes is a serious side effect of this sugar dependency that affects Belizeans across the nation. That said, as an occasional treat Belizean sweets are a delicacy not to be missed. Often they are sold out on the street in Tupperware containers so don’t be shy-ask what’s in that box and you might find a delicious dessert is the answer.

Point of View Buba Wuba.... Great Grubba! Placencia’s newest gathering place and watering hole is, appropriately, an outdoor bar right on the lagoon. Buba Wuba opened last month to local laid-back, but enthusiastic reviews...”You gotta try the smoked fish dip” was the first clue that this place has a great vibe.

Bobby Coppock, a retired and permanently transplanted New Yorker, told us it was a trip to Placencia back in 1989 that first gave him the yen to return. And he did, in 2001, and then put down his retired roots here two years ago. A successful lifetime

Candies can also be found across Belize. Some of the most popular are made from coconut. Cuttobrute is a candy made out of roughly chopped coconut cooked with brown sugar and sometimes a hint of ginger, while tableta is made of finely grated coconut cooked with ginger and brown sugar, cooled and cut into squares. Stretch-miguts has a fanciful name for a taffy made from coconut water that is increasingly rare in Belize today. This classic sweet has deep roots in Belizean Creole culture but it seems to have disappeared from the public eye in Placencia. Fudges made from peanuts, cashew and sesame seeds are also popular as is a sweet made

of opening eateries in his home state, Bobby found himself catering for local tours like Daytripper and Monkey River excursions. Since he had to get up early to fulfill those orders, a kitchen and now the bar, were the logical next steps. Buba Wuba opens at 7:00 for the breakfast crowd and serves right on through to 7:00 in the evening.

of sesame and brown sugar that is called “wangle sweet”, wangla being a West African word for sesame that is the common name for it here in our jewel. If you are investigating sweet things in Placencia you cannot forget fruits stewed in brown sugar. Local wild fruits like the marshmallowy cocoplum and aromatic cashew fruit are popular candidates for this treatment, as is half ripe papaya. They are slowly cooked in brown sugar, sometimes seasoned with allspice berries or a touch of rum. It is not traditional but I love stew cashew fruit over thick Greek style yogurt. And a topping of the crunchy cashew seed itself is a great addition to this unorthodox dessert. Don’t be afraid to experiment and to ask around-there are more sweets to be found across Belize than I can write about in one column! of the Buba Wuba sign is the magic ingredient to this enterprise. Bobby has been smoking meats and fish all his life he says. The key to the succulent result is time and moisture. The smoked pork tacos are a prime example...a different and delightful take on a Placencia favorite. In addition to the smoked offerings, Bobby says the The “smoke shack” part Conch Fritter and Conch

Ceviche have also become instant favorites. When asked about the name, Bobby says Buba Wuba means “my house is your house” in Garifuna. So pull up a bar stool or plop down at a picnic table, watch the lagoon float by, catch a sunset, and be welcome in Bobby’s house. Located about 4 houses down at Harbour Place North. Did you know that the Rotary Club also hosts a blood drive every 3 months? Our blood drive was held on January 20. We are always looking for more blood. Saturday March 10, 2018 Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department Presents 11th Annual Flaming Heart Ball Saturday March 10th 5pm till 12am Under the Stars @ Tipsy Tuna

Live music, Dancing, Cash bar, Food Tickets available from Volunteer Fire Persons All proceeds benefit the PVFD

Dear Placencia BTIA Member

ATTENTION ALL CHEFS

The Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department (PVFD) will be hosting the 11th Annual Flaming Heart Ball on Saturday March 10, 2018.

On Saturday March 10, 2018 the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department will host the 11th annual Flaming Heart Ball. Once again, we are inviting all local chefs, amateur and professional, to showcase their talents by donating samples of their best dishes.

Tickets $35 single, $60 couples, $10 children under 10

This is our major fundraising event of the year. The raffle that is held throughout the evening is responsible for a large portion of the money raised.

This event will, once again, be held at the Tipsy Tuna where guests will be offered a variety of sweet and savory dishes prepared by our community's most talented chefs. Stations will be set up with each dish and chef/business being clearly identified as guests move freely between stations to choose the dishes they wish to sample (each guest receives tickets to sample 7 dishes with additional tickets available for purchase), therefore, we ask that your donation contain a minimum of 60 sample size portions.

Based on this, we are requesting that your business graciously consider making a donation. Such as gift certificates for services you offer to the community. Or other prize ideas could be in the form of room accommodations, meals, jewelry, art work or hats and t-shirts. No donation is too small as we will combine some donations to offer gift packages during the raffle.

Last year's Ball drew approximately 350 people, so we hope you will recognize this as unique opportunity to display your culinary skills and promote your business, while helping fund this valuable community service. We will provide tables, table coverings, signage, guest plates and cutlery. We can also supply a limited number of volunteer servers and stations with electric connections (please request in advance).

All the money raised will go toward the daily operation of the Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department or for purchasing additional fire service equiptment that will enhance the fire protection services available to our community. We hope that this request meets with your approval and ask that you contact Kathy Anglin at peninsulafirechief@gmail.com.

We hope that you will participate in this event and will be contacting you to discuss your donation soon. Should you have any questions or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact the undersigned.

Many of the area businesses support our event each year and we are hopeful for their continued support and look forward to welcoming new friends to join in supporting this wonderful social event.

Very truly yours, Greg Valiton, Secretary PVFD Fireboard gregvwandas@gmail.com 523-3193

We look forward to working with you in our efforts toward continued improvements in our fire protection services on the Placencia Peninsula for a very long time. Very truly yours, Kathy Anglin, Chief PVFD 626-0667 peninsulafirechief@gmail.com

Native of Placencia, I am passionate about the ocean, and its conservation. Growing up on this once laid back fishing community, I have seen and experienced its fast changing environment that within a matter of time grew into one of the most popular touristic destinations in Belize. With this growth came both positive and negative impacts. Exposed to this, I found it imperative that I take responsibility of the actions of others and myself towards my community. I began volunteering with NGOs and later achieved my education in Natural Resources Management. I then became employed by a progressive institution, but later resigned to pursue my true passion. I am committed to making a positive change by focusing on restorative, sustainable and conservative programs to create a long lasting impact for future generations. I would be most grateful for your help to tackle my SDG "Life Below Water". Thank you in advance for supporting my journey. Merit360 is a special opportunity to work with passionate young people from all over the world to create a positive impact. Crucial to World Merit as a charity is fundraising. In order to attend, delegates must demonstrate their ability to create fundraising opportunities by completing the minimum required fundraising amount of US $1600.00. As a donor, you can track your fundraiser’s progress here and observe the journey to the biggest sustainable development event: Merit360 Philippines.

Advanced Level Birding Guide Birding and Archaeology Guide Barebones Tours Placencia Peninsula is not considered a prime Birding destination and people mainly associate the Peninsula with the beach and water activities. But in fact it should be. Placencia itself has excellent birding and with some of our top birding destinations within less than an hour reach from the Peninsula, Placencia could be a top vacation destination for people focusing on bird watching and would be very attractive to the more average Birder or Bird watcher – especially those who would like other activities in their vacation than just birding. It just need more advertising and to be featured on web sites for resorts. Most Birders come to inland resorts, which features birding as a main activity or just as part of their program. They often have abundant space with good birding habitat on the resort as well. While the last is not so often the case in Placencia, then Birders also love the beach and an evening swim after the birding tours.
