PLACENCIA Breeze A Placencia BTIA Publication

Celebrating Easter Placencia Style Starting off the fun on Thursday, March 24th is the Children’s Easter Egg Hunt on the beach beside Tipsy Tuna at 3pm. Tracy West-Eiley and Kathy Anglin Wade have been organizing this colourful event for many years.

Good Friday is the time for a trip to the cayes or a picnic on the beach with family and friends. Liquor Licencing laws prohibit alcohol sales that day. The Placencia Municipal Pier is another great area to swim or do some boat watching. If it’s water activities you want, check out Tipsy Tuna’s new Beach ‘N Rentals…rent a paddle board, kayak, mask and snorkel plus or

some of their other water toys.

Easter heats up Good Friday at midnight with some amazing DJs at Street Feet Lounge and Nightclub. Saturday and Sunday it’s Easter Fest on the beach starting at 10am at the Internet Beach between Tipsy and Cozy Corner with games, contests and music both days and nights. Tipsy Tuna has a free concert by Australia Band Conkarah and Barefoot will keep the action going with music and stiff drinks. Placencia Village welcomes everyone to have fun but please be respectful of this beautiful area by picking up your garbage…keep it green and keep it clean.

it – hopefully it had made its way On the morning of 24th February back out to deeper waters. there was a definite buzz around Why the whale had come to our Placencia. The excitement was shallow coastal waters is unknown; justified – a 30+ft long humpback possibly due to illness or injury whale had been sighted just a few although there was no obvious miles offshore. This is likely to be external evidence of this. Maybe it the first ever documentation of such simply got disorientated and lost. It a whale in Belize’s waters. Initial seems probable that this is the same reports came from the Harvest Caye humpback whale that was reported area but over the next day and a to be hanging around for an extended half, the whale moved to the outer period of time in a shallow area off st nd channel of Big Creek port and was the coast of Livingston, Guatemala, last seen behind Placencia Caye. A a couple of weeks ago. The Placencia Sailing Club is proud to host the Placencia Regatta on few hours later, no one could find May 21st and 22nd. Come and support our young sailors.

Another Great Sidewalk Arts Festival Saturday, the first day of the Sidewalk Arts Festival, opened with a bright and cool day with lots of visitors mingling with vendors lined up along the sidewalk. As always the sidewalk became a colorful tapestry of crafts, paintings and Jewelry.

There was a demonstration at the Belize Image Factory booth of how bowls are carved from tree stumps with the finished results on sale the next day all polished and varnished. Besides the usual crafts made by Mayans and Belizean wood carvers, there were artisan botanical

soaps, oils and lotions, green products such as reusable bags & biodegradable products and artisan vanilla extract and products made with the extract. Depictions Art “Kevin Baizar” also gave festival attendees the treat of seeing him working on a new painting “artist at work” at his booth. Excitingly there were some new and up and coming Belizean artists also present selling and showcasing their art. Entertainment during the weekend was provided by DJ Papi’s Sound, Pen Cayetano and his turtle shell band with special guest Titiman Flores playing Garifuna classics as well as some of Pen’s

newer compositions. Emmeth Young and the Talla Walla band had festival goers dancing to his distinctive drum beat style. For the thirsty and hungry festival attendees there were genuine Mayan dishes for sale by Mayan Pride, old favourites festival food sausage on stick by Big Beck’s BBQ and delicious coming out and by 2pm the sun was freshly made Belizean snacks like back out and the sidewalk was full of people viewing and purchasing arts & crafts. Placencia Sailing Club 2015 Optimist Sailing Season By Maria Cabral (PSC board member)

In 2012 the Placencia Sailing Club was founded, a non-profit organization with the sole goal of encouraging and training Placencia Peninsula children to sail, teaching them discipline, team playing and a skill which one day could enable them to be employed as captain of a sailing boat, private or charter. We also dream one day to have a child of Placencia to represent Belize in the Olympics. Big dreams but nothing is impossible if we all work hard for those dreams to happen. With all non profit organization started from the roots of Placencia, funding is always an issue but we as a club have been fortunate to have support from the community in donations and volunteers. This season we didn’t bring back any of the top medals but we got real close to getting a few of them. The Optimist National Regatta season is comprised of 6 regattas’s which carry points per race. These points add up through the optimist sailing season and determine who qualifies to attend the BzSA National Championships at the end of the sailing season’s regattas. On November 13th - 15th 2015, the BzSA National championship was hosted in Corozal. Six of our young sailors were able to attend with three sailors placed in the top ten at the end of a difficult weekend of sailing weather. The highlight for our club was Peter Joo who has only been sailing for 3

years, winning 3rd Place Sailor of the Year. Peter is a great example of what can be achieved when a young person sets their mind to working hard to improve their sailing skills by listening well and practicing hard. Following the Nationals, three of our qualifying young sailors, Peter Joo, Tyler Garbutt and Christian Ferrell Jr (better known as CJ) along with their Commodore & Chaperones, headed to Puerto Aventuras, Mexico for the Puerto Aventuras Regatta 2015.

Fish Y Vino, Barefoot Bar, Pickled Parrot, D’Thatch, Laru Beya, Tranquillo Bar, Placencia Village Council, and a whole lot of other supporters. In final review of this year, the Placencia Sailing Club is overwhelmed by the continuing support of our community and very proud of what our young sailors have achieved; we look forward to seeing them continue to improve. Our thanks also go out to…..

our Commodore Alvin Cabral who has giving up his time to train the sailors, fix the boats, build the trailer rack for the boats, house the boats and attend all the regattas with the sailors. Not forgetting the teachers and principal who gave our sailors time off from school to our sailors in order that they were able to attend the regattas. A special thanks to all of you that assisted the club in any way from buying T-Shirts to supporting our fundraisers, buying raffle tickets and giving the sailors a smile. Without the wonderful parents who support and encourage their children to regularly attend the training classes we thank you for trusting us with their children as we teach them to sail and take them to regattas throughout the country. Thanks all our supporters and sponsors of our sailors for their kind donations which made it possible for our young sailors to attend Corozal and the other regattas. A big THANK YOU to Pickled Parrot, Tipsy Tuna, Tranquillo Bar, “Uncle “, The Placencia Store, Sea Spray Hotel, Placencia Village Council, Rick’s Cafe, Remax, D’Tatch, D’Tourz & Annelise Hagen, Ally Smith, Lou Nicolait, Wende Bryan & Placencia Now. Point of View - A Bitters Sweet Tradition I’m certainly not the first person to write about Belizean Bitters and I bet I won’t be the last. If you are a local reading this, skip it, you probably know more about Bitters than I’ll ever know. But if you are a visitor here in Placencia, read on and get a taste, so to speak, of a Belizean experience you must have. I promise it will be a memory to take back home with you and give you a story for your next cocktail party.

Bitters is a natural, magic elixir that many Belizeans swear by. Made from roots, herbs, bark, weeds, or a combination of all, Bitters is touted as everything from a body cleanse to an antidote to common ailments. The herbal potion is brewed with rum, wine or water. You can imagine the potency will vary with whatever liquid is used.

The bitterness comes from the roots and is somewhat equalized by the sweetness of anise seed or something similar. Usually there are three main ingredients….Contribo bark which helps fight colds, flu, and indigestion. The Billy Webb bark contributes cleansing action as well as adding a boost of energy. The Jackass plant (weed?) helps to flus internal parasites and fungus from the system. Applied topically, Jackass is also used to treat head lice. Let’s hope your souvenir from your Belizean vacation doesn’t include THAT!

smoother than the first. I take no responsibility for anything after that. Ask at any local bar, but pretty much for sure you can find bitters (or as you will soon be calling it, “bittas”) at Barefoot, Sailfish, JBirds or cozy Corner. If you really want to jump on the bandwagon, check TasteBelize.com to see when they might be offering a tour to make your own.

There are few things more authentic to round out your visit…. conch, spiny lobster, chocolate come to mind. As we like to say, “Shotta? Why-not-ta!”. A last caution: Pepto Bismol for a happy tummy, you won’t be the first imbiber Belizean Nyquil to ease cold and to reprise the old I Love Lucy flu symptoms, Belizean Geritol for “Vitameatavegimin” routine. vigor and vitality. If you have a Cheers! shot too many, you might get the Belizean Analgesic…..and feel no pain!

There won’t be labels on the homemade stuff (much of it is) and the key is looking for the nondescript jug at local bars. It may or may not have detritus depending on whether or not it has been strained. But it’s going to be brown, it’s going to be served in a shot glass, So, all wrapped up in one it’s going cheap, and I guarantee experience, you are getting Belizean the second one will go down a lot

BEATING CANCER THROUGH MUSIC

In Memory of Aidan Andrews Young

Back in May 2015 in the Placencia Breeze archives, our regular readers will remember an article on a rare live jam session of Placencia peninsula musicians who held a pre-birthday gig for Aidan Andrews Young, a kid who loved music and Placencia. On February 6th 2016, a memorial service with family & friends was held at the municipal pier in memory of Aidan followed by a musical fundraising festival with musicians from all over Belize and the peninsula. This amazing brave, funny and determined young lad sadly lost his life time battle with a rare form of brain cancer on January 11th this year at the tender age of 11. Aidan was born June 29th 2004, to all intent purposes a perfectly normal healthy baby in Washington DC, to his mother Julie & father Carlton “Patu” Young. The family shortly returned to Placencia to live, as “Patu” is a well-known dive instructor, tour guide and musician (founder of the Belizean Band Inner Vibrations) in Placencia. At around the 4-month mark Aidan’s mother took him back to the States for a family visit and to get his immunizations. During this trip Aidan started having problems. Following a cat scan it showed he had a large tumour in his brain which needed immediate surgery which was conducted a few hours later. On November 18th, a day “Patu” will never forget, he got the news just hours before he was due to go on stage in Seine Bight. Not just that there was a tumour but that Aidan was undergoing emergency brain surgery in a few hours’ time. As often happens with families in Belize and an emergency occurs overseas, it was too late to get a flight that day, so Patu had to wait until the next day. Only someone who has been in same situation with a loved one can truly understand the shock to see your son hooked up to machines with wires and tubes everywhere and alarms going off all the time. Aidan was having the first fight of his life to survive, which would continue until he was 11. What no one knew at the time was Aidan had a very rare cancer where the tumour would return approx. every 18 months and require surgery, chemo and at one-time radiation treatment.

From a very young age Aidan grasped that without the surgeries and other treatments he would die and the cancer would win. This is where terminal ill children are often stronger than those around them. He stoically took this in his stride but it never dampened his sense of humour and living life to the max in the here and now. Between hospital visits and treatments Aidan lived as normal life as possible as he went to pre-school then elementary, attended art & music classes, he rode horses, skied, canoed, ice-skated, learned to scuba dive, learned to play the piano; he kept learning new things all the time and enjoyed all that life gave him. We have all heard the saying music calms the soul which was also a refuge for Aidan when the pain became too much to handle. Starting from when he was a tiny baby in that ICU ward, there were no old fashioned lullabies for him, what calmed him was music with a strong BEAT. Imagine the surprise of doctors coming on the ward hearing this music and the amazement to see its calming effect on this little baby. It is therefore fitting that part of Aidan’s legacy to Belize will be an annual Music Festival in Placencia. Rest in Peace little warrior rock on, knowing you inspired not just the young around you but also those older folk with your zest for life and ability to smile and joke even when you were suffering the most. The Aidan Andrews Young Foundations first music festival Fast forward to this year and the fastest organized music festival, I think in the history of Belize, was held on February 6th 2016. A few days following Aidan’s passing,

Patu & Julie had the idea of forming a foundation in Aidan’s memory to benefit terminally ill kids from under-privileged families in Belize who have little or no knowledge of how to access help and support. The Aidan Andrew Young Foundation is still very much in its infancy being conceived barely 3 weeks ago and the way it will be structured and work is still fluid. The families are still grieving and there is a plethora of legal paperwork to be sorted out and how it will work but they have a vision for it to be a source for information for families on where to get medical assistance and support. They hope the foundation eventually will be able to hand out financial grants to under-privileged families of terminally ill kids. Ultimately there is a vision for a refuge house similar to the “Ronald McDonald houses” where under-privileged families with terminal ill children in hospital receiving treatment can find safe place to stay and have hot meal. Patu plans to initiate a twice yearly visit to the less developed areas of Belize & teach First Aid & CPR to people in these areas. At the same time, he will be educating people on how important early screening and regular screening is in the fight against cancer in paediatric and adults. How the plan for a memorial service for Aidan’s family & friends here in Placencia with a musical Jam session to celebrate Aidan’s life grew into a full out music festival with less than 2 weeks planning and little funds to work with is nothing short of a miracle. And shows how truly amazing Belizean’s can truly be when we all work together for a cause. The whole event grew in

matter of hours and days and they realized this would be the perfect opportunity to launch the Aidan Andrews Young Foundation and its message to “BEATING cancer thru music” by having an annual music festival as a fundraising event for the foundation in Placencia. This music festival and the foundation also are a father’s enduring answer to this brave strong boy who while in the hospice turned to his Dad and asked quietly “Dad, will they (friends & family) remember me when I am gone?” The reply “I will make sure they do!”. Through the work of the foundation and music this will be Aidan’s legacy to Belize. Patu & Julie thank from the very bottom of their hearts all the musicians who came to play in honour of Aidan’s life: Titiman Flores & Lil June, Lost Reefers, Hot Papaya, John, Mark Finnegan, Inner Vibrations, The Persuaders and Gillharry’s 7 . Not to mention all the friends & family who volunteered to make & sell food and drink at the event, which had now become the foundations first fundraiser to cover the overheads of putting this festival of music on, and to start the seed for the foundation. To all the businesses who stepped up to help out with all the other associated stuff needed for an event of this scale at such short notice. Exuberant thanks to Gillharry’s 7, who not only supplied the sound equipment & lighting but also offered to perform thanks again for the love. Travellers Rum and Bowen & Bowen for their unconditional support and contributions, without which the fundraising bar for the event would not have been possible. To everyone who came out and celebrated Aidan’s life with us on February 6th, thanks for the love and support. So when is the next A.A.Y Foundation music festival in Placencia? Mark your calendars January 28th 2017, this annual festival will be held on the last Saturday in January. Gillharry’s 7 are already on board to perform and are diamond sponsors providing staging, lighting and sound. Travellers Rums are also Diamond Sponsors for next year’s festival. If you wish to be a sponsor, performer or be a part of assisting with this event next year please contact Carlton “Patu” Young. Further information how to do this will be available in near future.

Creature Feature By Dan and Judy Dourson

MONKEY SHINES Like a scene straight out of Jurassic Park, the haunting grunts and yowls of the Yucatan black howler monkey are undoubtedly one of the highlights of a visit to a Belizean rainforest. World renowned for its ability to produce high volume reverberations that can rattle the brain, this medium-sized primate is one of the loudest land mammals on earth with its calls heard as much as several miles away. The largest of the New World monkeys, Yucatan black howler monkeys travel in troupes of two to ten in size with usually one dominant male. But don’t let their size fool you, these laid-back folivores are nothing to fear. With a diet that is mostly leaves and some fruits, howler monkeys of Belize are more concerned about conserving hard-earned energy, so much so that they have evolved an unusually large hyoid bone near the vocal cords. This special bone allows the males to locate other males without expending much energy.
