SAY NO TO OFFSHORE OIL

By Lyra Spang

The Placencia community during the Placencia Art Festival held on February 11th and 12th, came together to take a stand against offshore oil exploration in Belize’s waters, adding 300 more voices to the thousands of voices from the residents of San Pedro and Caye Caulker and other areas of the country in demanding that the government adopt a policy of closing Belizean waters and the Barrier Reef from offshore oil exploration and drilling. Placencia’s own Leomar Leslie of Diverse Aerials took a drone shot of concerned citizens spelling out NO OIL as they call for a permanent legal ban on any offshore oil exploration in Belizean waters. Residents wrote and signed petitions addressed to the Belize Tourism Board, the Ministry of Tourism and the

Ministry responsible for Fisheries and Climate Change, expressing their desire to see Belize’s marine resources protected for current and future generations of Belizeans.

Along the Belizean coast, nearly 190,000 Belizeans rely on healthy marine ecosystems, mainly through fishing, tourism and recreation. As

of today, over 30,000 Belizeans have and continue to say “No” to offshore oil exploration and drilling in Belize.

facebook.com/ThePlacenciaBreeze Seaweed smoothie anyone? If you aren’t familiar with the wonderful world of edible seaweeds, you might be imagining a green, vaguely fishy and definitely unappetizing concoction. Perhaps your only culinary encounter with seaweed has been nori wrapped around raw fish at a sushi bar, but here in Placencia one variety (Eucheuma isiforme), is a prized ingredient in smoothies and shakes, making them thick and creamy while adding important minerals. There is usually plenty of Eucheuma in Placencia thanks to a seaweed growing initiative run by the Placencia Producers Cooperative. The term seaweed refers to marine algae, commonly grouped into brown, red and green types, making up around 12,000 different species. Very few are inedible and some are quite tasty. Belize, along with a number of its Caribbean neighbors, has for generations used the red algae Eucheuma isiforme and Gracilaria sp, simply called “seaweed”, in the preparation of puddings and drinks. This knowledge of using seaweeds for their thickening qualities was probably brought over from the United Kingdom and Ireland, where use of another red algae, Irish Moss (Chondrus Crispus), dates back centuries.

Page 7

including alginates and carrageenan. Carrageenan helps form the cell walls of Eucheuma isiforme, making up 40 to 75% of its total weight. This is what makes Placencia’s famous seaweed punch and sea weed smoothies so silky smooth and thick. In industrial food processing hydrocolloids derived from seaweed are used as thickeners in many foods from yogurts to ice creams, as well as cosmetic products. Ask any Belizean and we will tell you, seaweed is good for you. In fact, we say its “good fi di back” (good for the back), which means it will supposedly increase sexual performance, stamina and reproductive health. Certainly it won’t hurtEucheuma sp. are simply packed with nutrients. They are high in protein (almost 10% of dry weight, comparable with the protein content of soybeans) and 25% dietary fiber, 18% of which is soluble. They contain 46% ash, and are a wonderful source of sodium (1771.84 mg per 100 grams of dry weight seaweed), potassium (13,155 mg per 100 grams of dry weight seaweed), magnesium (271.33 mg per 100 g) and calcium (329.69 mg per 100 g), with significant quantities of iron (2.61 mg per 100 g), zinc (4.3 mg per The thickening qualities of 100 g), selenium (.59 mg these seaweeds are caused per 100 g) and iodine (9.24 by water soluble gums mg per 100 g). Just to give known as hydrocolloids,

you a little comparison, low fat milk contains only 125 mg of calcium as compared to 329.69 mg in our favorite seaweed. The banana, long touted as a great source of potassium, only contains 358 mg of this handy mineral. The whopping 13,155 mg per 100 grams of potassium found in our favorite seaweed makes Eucheuma the best food to consume after a hard workout, preferably in a nice smoothie with lowfat milk, cacao nibs and bananas. Convinced? Good. Now go get yourself some seaweed!

This locally owned inviting beachside restaurant has the classic nutmeg and vanilla (similar to a thick and creamy egg nog), plus 29 other flavours, served in a laid back tropical atmosphere with hammocks to match. Brewed Awakenings, located on the main street at the north edge of downtown Placencia, offers coffee but is more famous for their many different flavours of decadent seaweed shakes, It makes perfect sense to including oreo, peanut try a seaweed punch by the butter, coffee, all kinds

of fruits and a healthy green (with spinach and tropical fruits). Try a classic seaweed punch at The Galley restaurant or Omar’s Creole Grub along with your dinner or go for The Galley’s premium version with a shot of rum or cognac! CITRUS SENSATIONS BTIA Membership Spotlight

Owners: Donicio Sin and Glenn Burks We met several years ago and talked about opening a business that was different. We started with the idea of our citrus base shakes and real fruit smoothies with honey instead of sugar. We added dehydrated fruits and fruit leathers. Dony really has a personality for the kitchen he is making his own sauces and dressings, homemade breads, cinnamon rolls, our original waffle bowl breakfast which quickly became popular along with stuffed French toast. We are adding different specials that are different from the rest. Our juices are 100% real, we don’t add any sugar or water. Citrus Sensations is cooking up the good stuff!

Croc Corner: The Predator Patrol By Dr. Marisa Tellez

What do crocs, jaguars, snakes and raptors have in common? They are called Apex Predators and are important animals that keep their ecosystems in balance and ensure the stability of the circle of life that not only affects other wildlife, but the the communities that depend on natural resources for their livelihood! Research studies and examples from all over the world have illustrated the importance of apex predators in their environments, such as the introduction of wolves back in Yellowstone National Park, the loss of sharks in the Pacific northwest of the United States, and the loss of caimans in some populations in South America. Here in Belize we have a unique array of predators, and this past month the Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) teamed

up with our partners from The Belize Zoo (TBZ) and the Belize Raptor Center (BRC), aka (The Predator Patrol) to engage with local schools and the community during the Placencia Artwalk on the importance of crocodiles,

jaguars and raptors, and the Dos and Don’ts on how to co-exist with these majestic animals. With fun games (such as guessing what a crocodile eats by putting your hand in a “stomach”), pamphlets, and a few Wildlife Ambassadors

Visit www.placenciabreeze.com

(such as a boa constrictor from TBZ, and Skylar the Plumbeous Kite and Luna the Spectacle Owl from BRC), we successfully passed along our message of conservation and co-existence. During the Placencia Artwalk, we were approached by many members of the community as well as tourists who informed us of artists selling crocodile teeth, jaguar teeth, and macaw feathers. It is ILLEGAL to buy and sell any such wildlife products in Belize. The Placencia Police and Savannah Forest Department have been informed and will be investigating further. Be a Wildlife Champion-iIf you have any information about the selling or poaching of wildlife/wildlife products, please contact the local authorities or the CRC. With your help, we can ensure that Belize remains wild for many future generations to come!

Uraga Night Big Success! A big thank you to all who came out I am sure your bellies were swell with laughter and your flesh was vibrating from the beating of the "Primero" and "Segundo". Everything we hope for from this event came to life. The villagers are still raving from the calm That surrounds us as our ears perked up to hear the stories unfold in Garifuna and later translated in English for our visitors; who were much enthralled by the vibrancy of the Garifuna culture, the performances were phenomenal. Uraga Night awoke something in Seine Bight Village, it makes us want to cling to the richness of our Garifuna culture and the beating of the drums unite us as one which was one of the biggest goals of this event. We plan to have this event once again in May. Make it a date it will be bigger and better.

the first of the runners came to register and receive their bib. There are three age categories for each race, both boy and girl. For this first race the youngest group, age 9-11, ran a 2.5 K. The older two groups, 12-14 and 15-18 ran a 5K. The race was scheduled to start at 7:30 and we were a bit late with starting as some runners were late and

registration took longer than expected. The planning for the race started over two months ago and many volunteers were needed to plan the race. Race day required even more volunteers and of course a nurse, Judy Cox Roberts, and police. Officer Claudius Cardinez and the team of five police along with Kim,Greg, Jon, Dan,

The race organizers Kirwin, Dan and Rudy worked hard to make this race mimic all aspects of the bigger adult races held on the peninsula. Each runner had an official race bib, Montse manned the official timing table with help from Becky K. and there were photographers. Linda worked with high school student photographers twins Jaden and Jadon teaching them sports photography. (Check out all the pictures on the Seine Bight Unite Facebook page). Lynn Ann along with high school student Rafaine helped with registration. And Seine Bight Girls Running Club coach Jo was there helping and encouraging the girls. Thanks also to Ali and Kathy and Miss Elaine for their help wherever they were needed.

Miss Elaine who had been up very late the night before (along with quite a few of the volunteers and runners) for the Uraga made sure that we got the tables and chairs needed from the multi purpose building at the very early hour of 6:00. Maretha was emcee for the event along with Kirwin and they gave out the ribbons at the closing ceremony to the winning runners. It was quite moving seeing all the young faces cheering each other on. The students had a fantastic time and conducted themselves extraordinarily well. They are all looking forward to the next race. Seeing the happy and exuberant runners coming across the finish line made the efforts of all involved well worth it! These races are open to all students on the peninsula ages 8-18. The next race will be in about two months and will be an obstacle course race. Watch Facebook and the Placencia Breeze for the date.

As with all races fruit and water is needed. We are

To hang with your friends, to laugh, to gossip, to get out of the house, for some to escape family situations, to feel the buzz of working your body hard and above all, certainly for these kids - TO COMPETE!

Ask any athlete. Behind the glamour and excitement of the competition day lies the hard work and the daily small decisions that got them there: struggling to get out of bed before the sun comes up; fumbling around fuzzyheaded for the right pair of shoes; bracing against the early morning rain to get to the training field; and waging the internal battle Our training ground is not when your body says ‘no’ what you’d call a level and your trainer says ‘yes’. playing field: in places For the girls (and the boggy, riven with holes boys – we can’t keep and cracks not to mention them away!) of the Seine garbage and dog poop, but

these are small obstacles in the face of the fierce competitive spirit that the kids unleash. With harnessing that in mind, on 4 February we measured out 50 yards (the longest we could get with reasonable ground underfoot), marked out a start and finish line and assigned timers with stop watches so that we could bring more rigour and sophistication to the training. VICTORIA PEAK TRAIL OPENS FOR 2017 SEASON We are pleased to announce the opening of the Victoria Peak Trail for 2017. Victoria Peak Natural Monument was declared a Protected Area in 1998 for its uniqueness and aesthetic qualities. In addition, the protection status ensures the survival of one of Belize's few tracks of elfin woodland forest. The spectacular journey to the summit of Victoria Peak (1,120 meters) entails a 27 kilometer hike through the jungles of the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, culminating with an impressive vista of the Cockscomb Basin, in the Maya Mountains. Franco Gentile was honored at PHS’ annual general meeting on 27 January, 2017. Because of a very generous ten year lease, the PHS building sits on Franco’s property. Mariuccia Levoni, wife of Franco Gentile, accepted a certificate of appreciation, and explained in her words: “When PHS was in need of land, Franco did not hesitate in making it available to the organization.” PHS bears witness to the profound it was the easiest animal to have. love and passion Franco had for all Our FruFru lived to 21 years of age. nature, animals, and Belize. He was born and lived in Italy till he was 16. His family moved to NY from Torre del Greco (Naples) to keep their jewelry business alive, after the uncle in NY passed on. Torre del Greco is known for having the only CAMEO carving school in the world and a fantastic coral museum.

In 1988 Franco took off for Belize and Guatemala. He did not find Belize particularly attractive until one night he reached Placencia by bus. Mr Eiley and he were the only passengers. It was pitch dark....no electricity, remember?

It was the 80’s and more and more articles about Belize, this newly independent country, were appearing in the nature and wild life magazines Franco subscribed to. He said about Belize: here is the only country in the world that has a jaguar reserve, lots of untouched forest and there are more animals than people in Belize!

Franco returned to Manhattan raving about the fishing village. Davide, our son who was then 14, and I listened to him. We were both busy with school and graduate school. Many things happened in the next six years. Franco waited patiently for me to be ready to move. We took a few trips to Belize in the meantime. In 1994, I said yes. He ran Kitty’s Place restaurant and struggled to work in a tiny kitchen. It was rather difficult, but his cooking never suffered. He was a natural in the kitchen. Franco has always been an artist and he used that also in his cooking which was amazing and very innovative. I was very lucky because, apart from the first 10 years of our married life, I basically did not have to cook anymore. My job was desserts, he hated to prepare them. After Kitty came Luba Hati, a nightmare and a miracle come true! Luba Hati was the hotel we built in 1995-97, designed by him. Luba Hati was sold in 2006. And Eve Said “To Hell with GOD” This book was written for adult readers as it deals with the various reasons why so many marriages and relationships fail. The author, Sal Rivers, proposes several theories on the reasons why, beginning with the existence of a female Goddess, present at creation as to why the men and women are ensnared in the “battle of the sexes” today. The readers can actually go on the Publisher's website, Archway Publishing.com or Amazon. com and read the introduction, preface, table of contents and the first two chapters without commitment.
