Garifuna Settlement Day is a national holiday in Belize and celebrated throughout the country with a strong focus on towns and villages
British began importing slaves from Africa to plantations on Caribbean islands like St. Vincent. Over time, these African peoples began to intermarry with local Arawak and Carib peoples, mixing traditions, languages, and music to form the Garifuna culture. After rising up against the British, the Garifuna were pursued through the Caribbean, ultimately making their ways to the shores of Belize on November 19, 1802, a day now celebrated as a national holiday known as National Garifuna Settlement Day.
with a large population of Garifuna such as Dangriga, Punta Gorda, Hopkins, and Seine Bight.
Why You Have to Attend a Garifuna Settlement Day Celebration on Your Vacation
on storytelling, drumming, dancing, and preserving traditional livelihoods like farming and fishing, the Garifuna have added their own special contribution to Belizean food, music, and culture. On November 19, the entire country turns out to celebrate the arrival of the Garifuna to the shores of Belize nearly 200 years ago. With exhibitions of both traditional music and styles like punta that were created by the Garifuna, the holiday is a great time to see street dances, enjoy Garifuna foods like cassava bread and hudut (fish cooked in coconut), and hear the oral history of the Garifuna people being told by village elders.
Any visitor who has had the good fortune of traveling Where in Belize Is to villages like Hopkins Garifuna Settlement Day or Seine Bight or the Located?
Best Way to Experience Garifuna Settlement Day on the Placencia Peninsula To truly make the most of this unique holiday, you’ll have to be on the beach in Seine Bight at dawn. Traditional Garifuna dugout canoes filled with locals dressed in traditional garb will re-enact the arrival of the Garifuna on the shores of Belize nearly 200 years ago. On the beach, the celebration will commence with plenty of drumming, dancing, music, and food. Later on in the day, Tipsy Tuna Seaside Bar will have their annual Uremei around 3pm on the beach in Placencia Village.

THE PLACENCIA BREEZE NEWSPAPER
– PRESS RELEASE – Belize City, Belize – 20th October 2016 The Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) expresses its concern and disappointment at the recent announcement made by the Government of Belize approving seismic testing in Belize’s offshore areas and near our Belize Barrier Reef System. Specifically, the BTIA is concerned about the lack of information and insufficient consultation. Very little information was shared with the public and key stakeholders before the decision on the multi-beam and seismic testing was made. Also, there was insufficient consultation with the tourism, fisheries and environmental sectors, as well as with the general public, prior to considering any decision on this matter. Belize has prided itself for its pristine marine resources. The BTIA is extremely concerned about the potential negative effects to Belize’s image as a highly regarded tourism destination as a result of offshore seismic testing. We are also concerned about the potential negative impacts on our fisheries and tourism sectors from petroleum exploration.

We urge the Government of Belize to reconsider its decision to go economic impacts that such tests will bring to our country. Given the fragility of our marine ecosystems and their value to tourism and fisheries, adequate consultations and analysis should be undertaken prior to any offshore seismic testing. The BTIA reiterates the importance of proper environmental impact studies and public consultation. Any irreversible damages to our marine resources would adversely impact the tourism industry, which is the mainstay of Belize’s economy, as well as the livelihoods of all Belizeans who directly and indirectly benefit from tourism.

Crocodile Research Coalition celebrates Croctober! By Dr. Marisa Tellez Kohlman
October has become an unofficial month of crocodiles internationally, and many zoos and wildlife sanctuaries have dedicated this month to be known as Croctober! During Croctober, organizations and institutions focus their educational and fundraising efforts towards raising awareness and funds for crocodile research and conservation. The Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) based on the peninsula decided to join in on this international campaign through daily educational posts on their Facebook page and Twitter account, as well as reaching out to the schools to provide presentations and fun crocodile related educational activities. The CRC’s Croctober month also included a visit to Ocean Academy in Caye Caulker to train students for Next Gen Croc: studentled crocodile eyeshine tours in which proceeds go towards preserving crocodile habitat on the island (in collaboration with FAMRACC), as well as financially assisting students in their school tuition fees (CRC is currently in discussion creating Next Gen Croc for the Placencia Lagoon area by next year).

5th Annual End of the World Marathon/Half Marathon By Wanda Stukatis
and Half Marathon has proven to be an inspirational day for runners, volunteers, visitors and residents of the peninsula. Thanks to the generosity of our many sponsors, the volunteer efforts of all the communities on the peninsula, and the exceptional Placencia Rotary Club Scholarship Program, the young people from Placencia and Seine Bight now have the opportunity to complete their education, which in my opinion is the most important thing we can do for the peninsula and the country. Moreover, the Marathon is helping to foster a culture of endurance running and overall fitness consciousness in the country. Regardless of a runner’s age or means, long distance running races are accessible to anyone who is willing to invest in the training. And the experience of crossing the finish line after many months of training is exhilarating beyond words. Every finisher is ultimately a winner”
On Sunday, December 4, at exactly 5:30AM more than 200 runners who have trained long and hard for many months will participate 5th Annual End of the World Marathon. This race is the brain child of Professor Chip Lovett, a Biochemistry professor in Massachusetts and a part time resident along with his wife Jennifer of Maya Beach. Six years ago Chip recognized that the newly paved road spanning the Placencia Peninsula would be an ideal course for a marathon and half marathon and could potentially be a significant fund raiser for the communities of the peninsula. When he learned that many Belizean children do not complete high school because of the prohibitive cost (it takes about BZ$4000 for a student to complete high school and many families earn under BZ$7,000 per year) and that the Rotary Club of Placencia had a scholarship program he decided to use all the proceeds from the marathon to educate the children of the peninsula who would not otherwise be able to attend high school.
From Tiana Felix, Rotary Scholarship student 4 years of high school and 2 years of 6th Form: “In my sociology class, we were taught that women had inferior statuses. They were considered only to be housewives, maids, and so on. When women were given the opportunity to go to school, there was still gender biases in the subject areas. Women were given soft subjects like home economics, and males excel in hard subjects like math and science.
A Marathon runner himself Chip organized the inaugural End of the World Marathon and Half Marathon in December of 2012. He chose the name because the date coincided with the end of the Mayan calendar. Obviously the world did not end and neither did the race! However, he decided to keep the name in honor of the distinguished British author Aldous Huxley, who wrote in 1934 “If the world had any ends, British Honduras (now Belize) would certainly be at the end of one of them.”
However, with the evolution of modern society, women are equally given the opportunity to go to school. Today, education is often seen as a tool for females to elevate their status. I am always saddened when females fail to embrace the opportunity to go to school if given to them. George Washington Carver said, "Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom." Education can unlock many doors that women once could not open. Education means so much to me, because I am willing to unlock some many doors.”
Over the last 4 years over BZ$70,000 has been raised and turned over to the Rotary Club of Placencia Scholarship program to educate students. 100% of the money raised goes directly to education. Currently the scholarship program has 25 students enrolled in high school at Independence High School and 7 students in 6th Form. Sixth Form students are attending IJC, EJC, UB and ST. John’s. In the last two years, every student who was graduated from high school in this program has gone on to attend 6th Form, and most of them are still part of the Rotary Scholarship Program. From Marathon Organizer Chip Lovett:

“It is totally fantastic how the Peninsula community comes together for this event. Bringing the entire 13.1-mile course to life before 5:30AM on a Sunday morning is quite a logistical challenge and would not be possible without the commitment of all our volunteer support teams. Last year we had over 130 volunteers participating in the overall process of making things work. Everyone’s efforts throughout the course and the creativity displayed for best water/aid station bragging rights is not only fun for the runners and volunteers, its everyone working together to improve education opportunities to our community. AND if we ever have a natural disaster on the peninsula, this just might be the team that pulls together to help clear the roads and distribute aid to the community. I’m grateful to be a volunteer and part of this End of the World!”
