Yurumein November 19th At Tipsy Tuna November 19th in Belize is celebrated as Garifuna Settlement Day. The celebration usually begins very early in the morning of the 19th with the re-enactment of the Garifuna arrival, known as the Yurumein, to the shores of Belize. A few years ago, the Tipsy Tuna began doing the Yurumein at 3:00 in the afternoon, rather than early in the morning allowing more people to be a part of this special occasion. It is followed by dancing, singing and a big party! So, if you want to see an integral part of Belize's Garifuna culture and you can't make it to one of the early morning Yurumein, then come out to the beach at Tipsy Tuna at 3 p.m. on November 19th!

During these talks, kids of all ages learned about crocodiles and their conservation both around the world and in Belize, as well as the Do’s and Don’ts of living with crocodiles to further promote coexistence and stewardship of crocodile habitats. Everyone was excited to learn that crocodiles are more closely related to birds than other reptiles (many experts now are not even calling crocs reptiles anymore!), and that crocodile moms are very protective of their babies. They also learned that crocodiles in Belize are important ecosystem regulators

Where does food enter this fascinating story? When a Yurumein takes place, stalks of cassava and plantain join the drums and revelers on the boats as part of the arrival reenactment. Along with fish and coconut, these are staple foods in the Garifuna diet. Cassava, often thought to be from West Africa, is actually native to northern South America. The Carib people are responsible for carrying it to every island across the Caribbean, where it flourished with little care and provided an underground storehouse of starchy calories even after hurricanes. It was introduced to West Africa by European sailors in the 1500s. dishes is hudut which means pounded in the Garifuna language. Hudut combines coconut and fish along with plantains to make a perfectly balanced and hearty meal. Coconut milk is seasoned with garlic and herbs and topped with a whole fish, fried to crispy perfection. Cooked green and ripe plantains are pounded together and formed into a ball of hudut that serves as both the starchy accompaniment and eating utensil for this delectable bowl of food, which is typically served with hot pepper to taste. The diner breaks off pieces of the glutinous plantain and dips it in the coconut milk broth, using the plantain to pick slivers of tender meat from the fried fish. This is then popped into one’s mouth as a delicious bit of coconut, fish and slightly sweet plantain. While is a Garifuna dish, Belizeans of all cultures love a good plate of hudut. Look for it at Ms. Vern’s restaurant in Seine Bight. Lyra Spang is owner/guide of Taste Belize Tours, a unique cultural & culinary tour company. 19 Global Climate Action Projects to be Honored at the UN Climate Conference (COP23) in Bonn Fragments of Hope, a small not-for-profit community organization based in Placencia, Belize is one of the 2017 winners! Their

work has focused on identifying and growing temperature tolerant corals for reef restoration. To date they have out planted more than 90,000 corals at three locations in southern Belize. The star site is Laughing Bird Caye National Park where restoration work was inspired after Hurricane Iris in 2001, and the work began in 2006. Coral cover there has been increased by over 35%, and the nursery-grown, out planted corals are also spawning (reproducing on their own to re-seed reefs naturally). Based on these successes, the restoration work has expanded in Belize to South Water Caye Marine Reserve

and Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve. Other Caribbean countries are also inspired to begin reef restoration. Lisa Carne, the executive Director/Founder of Fragments of Hope, and Mariko Wallen, a licensed tour guide and coral restoration practitioner, will be attending COP23 in Germany to accept the award, under the project title More corals=More Fish, and under the category “Women for Results”. SEINE BIGHT GIRLS RUNNING CLUB by Wanda Stakutis

Many thanks to the The Flying Pig and all who participated in the recent Poker Tournament there. They are very generously donating a portion of the proceeds from the tournament that will keep the kids in fruit for an ENTIRE YEAR!! One of our biggest problems is that frequently most of the kids haven’t eaten before they come out for a variety of reasons, one of which is there is no food in the house. So, when they try to run and work hard they just don’t have the energy. And when it is really hot, midway through the 1 1/2-hour work out they need potassium replaced. And of course, at the end they are super hungry. How heart breaking

it is when 15 or 20 kids say I am tired because I am hungry. With this donation, we will be able to offer the kids bananas and oranges every week and an occasional watermelon or two for the really grueling and hot days.

The continuing support for this group is amazing. We have been able to get the kids shoes (we really need shoes right now!!), running pants, sports bras, water bottles and finally now thanks to The Flying Pig Poker tournament, weekly fruit We are still meeting every Saturday morning at 6:00AM We now have several boys that come out with us and we welcome all students from age 9 and up. Volunteers are also welcome and if you can only do

KIRWIN RAMIREZ, SEINE BIGHT SUPER STAR

by Wanda Stakutis Kirwin Ramirez is 27 years old. Kirwin was born in the village of Seine Bight right here on the peninsula and has spent his entire life as part of the seine Bight community. Kirwin is the only boy in his family and grew up surrounded not only by his sisters but by numerous female cousins! Kirwin’s mom has worked at Turtle Inn as a cook for many years and has instilled in her son a strong work ethic. Kirwin at the moment after a hiatus from school is in the process of trying to finish his 6th Form education. As with many youths from Seine Bight this presents a challenge as 6th Form is expensive and money is still needed to come

in to the family. However, he is determined to finish and hopefully will complete his education by the end of this year. He is also a very valuable member of the IJC volleyball team!! Kirwin is extremely proud of being Garifuna and works hard at trying to keep the culture alive which presents more and more of a challenge every year in Seine Bight as the population changes. When he was a teenager for a few years Kirwin, as with many teens, was struggling to find his way and did not always behave as well as he may have but he has more than made up for any teen boy behavior in his adult life. Where

ever something good is happening in Seine Bight you can be sure to find Kirwin somewhere in the mix. He coaches boy’s soccer. He is head coach of the Seine Bight Girls Running club. He has been a personal coach to several residents of Seine Bight. He helped organize the Global Sports program this summer. He organizes the youths for and attends the four weeks of church camp every summer and works all day and then helps with security at night. He leads beach clean ups with his soccer team. He has worked with a group of youths on tumbling and drumming. He started and has organized the series of Young Runners for Life races. He has coached several young men that run the half marathon every year. He helps with the BCVI clinic in Seine Bight, literally going house to house to make sure the senior citizens that need to get there are helped. He is trying to get a gym open in Seine Bight with a low-cost membership (just enough to cover maintenance of equipment and cleaning). Whenever I need help with anything in Seine Bight (such as rounding up kids for various things as many of the kids do not have phones or internet. Or

help with a troubled member of the running club) I know all i have to do is send Kirwin a message and he will be there to help. All of this Kirwin does for free!!!! Kirwin also teaches PE at PIA, his only paying job. The kids there love him and I am sure hope he continues to teach PE forever!

In addition to all this, as if this is not enough, Kirwin is also very, very active in his church. Every Friday he conducts a youth group and frequently organizes hot dog roasts, camp fires and other evening activities for the kids. He plays his guitar and sings as service every Sunday morning. Did I mention Kirwin is also a very talented musician?? He is a firm believer in God and has dedicated his life to his faith and trying to make at least his small portion of the world a better place. I am sure I missed many other things that Kirwin is involved in. All I know is that this is one of the finest human beings that I have ever met and is doing everything he can to help with the youth in Seine Bight. The world would be a better place if there were more outstanding young men like Kirwin.
