Wishing you a Very Merry Czech Christmas Prague’s traditions run deep - it’s part of what makes the city so special during this time of year. There’s the stunning Christmas Tree in Old Town Square, which is shipped from Liberec in the northern mountains and lit with thousands of twinkling lights each year. There’s the handmade souvenirs of the holiday markets, from wooden toys and glassware, to embroidered lace and woven scarves, which recall decades worth of Czech history. Even the Czech traditional Christmas dinner - fried carp - dates back to the 18th century, when it represented the only meal cheap enough for the entire country to eat. These age-old customs range from feasting on carp to fasting in the hopes of seeing a vision of the lucky golden pig (zlaté prasátko)- and don’t worry, by the end of this issue, we’ll explain them all. Prague’s worldfamous Christmas markets are a wintry marvel every visitor should see, and we’ve put together a guide to all the hits, from Old Town Square and its 23-meter Christmas tree to the nearby shopping extravaganza at Wenceslas Square. Prague wouldn’t be the revolution-born city it is without people willing to push the boundaries of tradition, so it’s fitting that New Year’s comes so soon after Christmas - as much as the holidays are a time of appreciating the traditions we’ve built, it’s

also a time to look ahead to the history we want to make ourselves. Plus, Czechs love any excuse for fireworks, and New Year’s is the biggest excuse of all. Ten things you need to know about

Czech Christmas Christmas time is our favorite time of the year, especially here in the Czech Republic. If you’re visiting, you should probably be aware of the basics, and some of the more quirky Czech traditions. Christmas Eve is the main day of celebration – with a family dinner and the opening of gifts while Christmas Day is more low-key. Here’s ten ways Christmas time in the Czech Republic might be different than what you’re used to…

Happy Name Day... Got you an apple!

Thanks for the gifts, Baby Jesus Unlike most Germanic cultures, baby Jesus (Ježíšek) brings the presents, not Santa Claus. Gifts are delivered during dinner through an open window and the presents are left under the tree. Before you start picturing infant Jesus carrying in a kids bike it should be noted there are really no images associated with the divine being.

Happy Name Day, Adam and Eve! Darling, let's scare the kids... On December 5th, the eve of Saint Mikuláš Day (St. Nicholas Day), adults dressed as the saint, an angel and a devil wander the streets, visiting children and handing out presents. Children are asked if they have been good that year and they respond with a yes and a song or poem. Good children receive candies and fruits, bad children get a lump of coal or old potatoes. Horrible children are supposedly taken to hell by the Devil, so naturally children are terrified of the already scary-looking character. Although St. Nicholas looks similar to Santa Claus, he is actually based on the real-life patron saint of children and those in need. You’ll most likely see the three characters walking along the street; you can definitely find them in Old Town Square.

Similar to a birthday, a Name Day involves celebrating a day of the year that is associated with one's given name. Homage is paid to those bearing the name of the first man and woman on December 24.

...and Speaking of Apples During or after Christmas dinner, each person cuts an apple down the middle to see if it has a star, which means they will survive the next year, or a cross, which means they will die (Luckily it’s almost impossible to get a cross).

Prague's most famous tree Every year, Old Town Square’s beautiful Christmas tree is selected from among 20 choices, none of which are in a public forest - this year’s tree comes from a private estate in Liberec. It’s a Smrk (Spruce) tree and is the tallest in recent years at 23 meters - it’s more than 60 years old!

Excuse me, there seems to be a carp in my bathtub... The carp meal on Christmas Eve dates back to the 18th century when the fish was cheap enough to be a common traditional meal amongst all Czechs. In more modern times, the fish were often kept living in the family bathtub in the days leading up to Christmas to filter out the dirty riverwater and for the amusement of the children. Live carp can still be purchased at many markets and processed on site for your refridgerator, or packed up and ready for your tub.

Seeing Golden Pigs Looking for a bit of luck? Perhaps try the Czech tradition of fasting all day before the big Christmas dinner. Superstition has it that if you see a golden pig (zlaté prasátko) – you'll have good luck for all of the upcoming year.

First one to leave the dinner table dies... It may sound like the plot from a murder mystery dinner, but it's actually on old superstition. Once Christmas dinner begins, no one is allowed to leave the table until everyone finishes and they can all stand up together to go and open presents. The first person to leave the table is said to be the first to die in the new year.

More Christmas ways to die Superstition and fortune-telling seems to surround the traditional Czech Christmas, foretelling not just upcoming success, but also impending death. Families put a candle in a walnut shell and watch where the walnut boat floats, which provides a prediction for the upcoming year – once again including death as one of the many outcomes. Other superstitions include pouring molten lead into water and reading the shapes to determine fate in the upcoming year.

St. Stephens and Chill A more recent Czech tradition which takes place on Svátek svatého Štěpána (or St. Stephen's Day) involves jumping into a freezing cold lake or cold river. In Prague, you can join the plunge into the Vltava by the National Theatre. We'd recommend bringing your own towel and a bottle of slivovice.

1. Staroměstské náměstí (Old Town Square) Through January 6 10:00 – 22:00,

It’s no surprise that Old Town Square is home to Prague’s largest and most picturesque Christmas Market, complete with a towering Christmas tree, nativity scene and concert stage, and numerous food and gift vendors. Even if you aren’t looking to do some holiday shopping, the square is a must-see for the views alone and is continuously ranked as one of the top Christmas Markets in the world. Best For: Instagrammable moments

2. Náměstí Míru (Peace Square) Through December 24 10:00 – 19:00

This romantic, intimate market is perhaps the only location frequented more by locals than tourists. These vendors offer handmade goods like soaps and lotions, authentic wooden toys and woven scarves and gloves over touristy gimmicks. The square’s stunning view of the neo-Gothic Church of St. Ludmila adds to the fairytale atmosphere of Prague’s first open market of the season. Best For: The "local" shopping experience

3. Náplavka Market

Náplavka Rašínovo nábřeží, Prague 2 If you’re planning on cooking your way through the holidays, Náplavka is the place to go. Known for its locally grown fresh produce and Czech goods, the market supports small good-quality producers from the Czech Republic. You can’t beat the vegetables and spices available here – you can even find live carp for a traditional Czech Christmas. Best For: Farmer's Market style market

4. Václavské náměstí (Wenceslas Square) Through January 6

Located at náměstí U Svatého Jiří (St. George’s Basilica Square), Prague 1, this is one of Prague’s newest markets and the

6. Náměstí Republiky (Republic Square) Through December 30

For visitors looking to take a break from the craziness of Old Town without traveling too far off the path, this market is the place. A smaller, less crowded version of Old Town Square’s markets, Náměstí Republiky hosts the vendors in front of the impressive Municipal House and Palladium shopping center. This is one of the best markets for traditional Czech meats, such as blood sausages and barbecued pork. Best For: Laid back shopping

7. Manifesto Market Through December 23 Thu-Su 11:00 – 20:00

Na Florenci, Prague 1 Manifesto Market reopens for the city’s first alternative Christmas Market. Created from shipping containers, the modern market includes a rotating selection of Czech designers, creators and artists, plus food and gastronomy provided by chefs from Prague’s top restaurants. Stay nice and cozy inside rentable heated igloos or around fireplaces and with a variety of beverages. Best For: Coolness Factor

New Years 2019 New Year’s Eve in the Czech Republic is called Silvestr, commemorating the anniversary of Pope Sylvester I, an influential saint who served as Pope of the Western Church during the 4th Century. Historically it was a Christian holiday, celebrations of the new year were forbidden until Tři králové (Three Kings Day) on the twelfth day of Christmas. The New Year’s Eve extravagant parties did not begin until after WWII. Czechs believe the last day of the year has magical power and that the dreams you have on NYE will become reality in the next year. They also believe that how you spend your New Year’s Day is how you will spend the rest of the year, so Czechs make sure to spend the entire day relaxing and avoiding any kind of work whatsoever. Czechs celebrate the new year in Prague either with an immense amount of fireworks and alcohol or by avoiding the chaos altogether and getting out of town. Many Czechs escape to the mountains (hory) to go hiking or skiing or relax at a spa resort. Špindlerův Mlýn in Krkonoše is one of the most visited Czech ski resorts while Lipno in Šumava is perfect for families with young kids. Other popular mountain destinations include Jizerské, Orlické and Krušné hory. Small villages all over the country will always have some sort of New Year’s festivities going on as well, in the town squares and the local breweries. If you stay in the city, be prepared for an insane amount of large fireworks being fired off from all parts of the city since the laws here are almost non-existent. The craziness is worth it though – the natural beauty of the city is a breathtaking backdrop and it’s bound to be a fun, celebratory night. The city’s official fireworks show is January 1st at 6PM from Letná. You can find the perfect view walking along the river or from Petřín hill. You can also brave the bigger crowds and watch from the historical Charles Bridge, Old Town Square or Wenceslas Square – either way it will be a spectacular sight. The drink of the new year is Bohemia Sekt, a Czech šampaňské (champagne) with over 40 years of traditions. The company dates back to 1945 when the first batch was drank by US Troops celebrating the liberation of Starý Plzenec - they supposedly consumed over 37,000 bottles. On New Year’s Day, Czechs eat čočka na kyselo (lentil soup) which is said to bring prosperity and good fortune in the new year. You can celebrate New Year’s early on December 29, appreciating the beauty of the Vltava with a glass of wine and delicious mushrooms and oysters at Náplavka Farmers’ Market. If you’re planning on spending NYE at home, you can get all the food you need for the perfect dinner at Heřmaňák Farmers’ Market, where some of the best locally-grown fresh produce and Czech products are sold.

DINNER Prague’s best restaurants celebrate the new year in style with specially crafted NYE menus and of course, lots of champagne. For a relaxing evening away from the craziness of the center enjoy a delicious 10 course meal at Nebu. Drink champagne, cozy up by the fireplaces and enjoy the meal made by accomplished international chefs in their charcoal tandoor oven – plus fireworks afterwards! For a gourmet meal with a beautiful atmosphere check out Piknik Park, located on the magical Kampa Island, or Marina Ristorante, floating right on the Vltava with stunning views of the Prague Castle and fireworks. Marina will serve some of the best Italian in Prague, while Piknik Park’s dishes range from veal roast and grilled calamari to saffron risotto with zucchini and parmesan. For dinner with a party Avenue and Buddha Bar can’t be beat. At Avenue, you can enjoy a gourmet 5 course menu accompanied by live jazz, a DJ and other entertainment. Appetizers range from crab cutlet to salmon tartar, with main dish options of stewed veal tenderloin with coffee and cranberry sauce or Arizona trout with grilled vegetables. Buddha Bar’s delicious dinner is accompanied by a violinist, a special Burlesque show and an allnight DJ. Appetizers range from duck foie gras with cherry chutney and brioche to beef tataki with parmesan and teriyaki, with main dishes including grilled lobster with yuzu bisque and Atlantic black cod with truffle-miso sauce.

BY Bektash Musa Set in Vienna, Amadeus details an incredible story about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, told by his peer and secret rival, Antonio Salieri – who is confined to an insane asylum throughout the film. Famous Czech director and screenwriter Miloš Forman directed the film. He is an important figure of the Czechoslovak New Wave and is known for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Firemen’s Ball, among other films. Amadeus was nominated for 53 awards and received 40; eight Academy 46

Awards (including Best Picture), four BAFTA Awards, four Golden Globes, and a Directors Guild of America (DGA) award. Almost the entire movie is shot around the Prague Castle, in the Hradčanská and Malá Strana areas of Prague. There are many ways to get to the historical 9th century Castle, the most beautiful routes are along Nerudova and Thunovská streets. Turkish photographer Bektash Musa fell in love with Prague at first sight. A fan of media, Musa also wanted to show the world the beauty of the city through the eyes of directors who filmed here, pairing photos of actual places with scenes from movies, television shows, documentaries and music video where they were originally shot.
