HAPPY OCTOBER. Autumn is our favorite season here in Prague. Pleasant afternoons and crisp evenings. There's something about this time of year where we switch from our customary after-work pint of beer to a nice glass of wine. Maybe it's the weather. Like most months, in October we find ourselves with no shortage of things to do. We're particulary excited about several great concerts from acts we remember (growing up in the 80's) including Paul

THINGS OUR TOP PICKS OF THINGS TO DO IN OCTOBER
PAUL SIMON Monday, October 17
During his distinguished career Paul Simon has been the recipient of many honors and awards including 12 Grammy Awards, three of which (“Bridge Over Troubled Water”, “Still Crazy After All These Years” and “Graceland”) were albums of the year. In 2003 he was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work as half of the duo Simon and Garfunkel. He is a member of The Songwriters Hall of Fame, a recipient of their Johnny Mercer Award and is in the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Simon and Garfunkel and as a solo artist. His song “Mrs. Robinson” from the motion picture “The Graduate” was named in the top ten of The American Film Institute’s 100 Years 100 Songs. At 74, Simon recently eluded to being ready to quit touring, meaning if you have aspirations to see him, this may be your chance. We’ll refrain from making the obvious “Sounds of Silence” joke here. KAREL GOTT
THE CURE
monday, October 10, 8PM
Saturday, October 22
Want to impress a Czech person? Tell them you're going to this show. Karel Gott is Czech national treasure having been voted "Most Popular Male Singer" over 40 times. After a successful fight against cancer, he's returning to the stage this month in a fairly small venue (which is sure to sell out). Gott has sold an estimated 23 million records in the German-speaking market, and about 15 million in former Czechoslovakia and its successor states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The Cure were one of the first alternative bands to have chart and commercial success in an era before alternative rock had broken into the mainstream. The launch of the tour promises 37 years of Cure songs, mixing hits, rarities, favourites, and as yet unreleased tracks in a brand new stage production.
Where: Malostranská beseda, Malostranské náměstí 21, Praha 1
We can't say we're happy about the Cure going on tour for the first time in a decade, simply because it just doesn't fit into the expected tormented persona of a Cure fan. But, having seen the band before, we recommend this show, even if you weren't a "goth" BITD. Where: 02 Arena Českomoravská 2345/17, 190 00 Praha 9

Prague's
Most Haunted By Tatiana Cirisano and Sam Spengler
Don’t let Prague’s dazzling bridges and charming cobblestone paths fool you— this city has a dark side. Often labeled one of the most haunted places in Europe, Prague was the site of three now-famous defenestrations, and a known meeting place for astrologers and alchemists in the 16th and 17th centuries (more on that later). The city is crawling with ghostly sights and unsolved mysteries both rumored and historically documented, if you know where to look. Thankfully, we did the work for you. Just in time for Halloween, here are six of Prague’s most skin-crawling haunts, from a dark magic worshipping site to a church constructed entirely of human bones. Find the full list in the pages that follow, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.

THE THIEF'S HANGING ARM
Kostel Sv. Jakuba Vetsiho SCARINESS rating: 4 4 4 Unlike many of Prague’s haunts, the scariest part about Old Town’s baroque church of St. James the Greater (or Kostel Sv. Jakuba Vetsiho) isn’t hidden. In fact, it’s in plain sight. Make an immediate right upon entrance, and you’ll come face-to-face with a 400-year-old mummified arm dangling by a meat hook. Yes, you read that right. Rumor has it that the mangled forearm belongs to a thief who tried to steal jewels from the church’s statue of the Virgin Mary. But when Mary grabbed the thief’s arm and wouldn’t let go, a group of nearby parishioners were forced to amputate. As the legend goes, the blackened arm was hung by a meat hook (allegedly, many of the parishioners also belonged to a nearby butcher’s guild), and has remained as a warning ever since. The horrors don’t end there. The church is also home to the tomb of Count Vratislav of Mitrovice, who was accidentally buried alive in the 1700s. The story goes that the Count’s wails and moans were mistaken for those of ghosts. Soon, the Count became a ghost himself.
BONE CHURCH SEDLEC OSSUARY SCARINESS rating: 4 4 4 4 4
If you’re (somehow) not satisfied by Prague’s own haunted past, venture out to Sedlec, a suburb of Kutná Hora in the Czech Republic. Here you’ll find a chapel also known as the Bone Church—and it’s not hard to see why. The macabre structure is estimated to hold the remains of 40 thousand people, many of whom died during the Black Death of the 14th century and Hussite Wars of the early 15th century. After the abbot of the Sedlec Monastery sprinkled holy soil from Jerusalem across the Sedlec cemetery in 1278, it became one of the most desirable burial sites in Bohemia. But when the site began to overflow with bodies, the local woodcarver František Rint was tasked with arranging the tens of thousands of bones. The final product includes four candelabras, a family crest, six pyramids, and a chandelier, all made entirely of bleached, defleshed human bones. 10

GATEWAY TO HELL Houska Castle SCARINESS rating: 4 4 4 4
Thought to be one of the most haunted locations in the world is the Houska Castle, isolated in the forests north of Prague. Lacking fortification, water, a kitchen, and access to trade routes, the existence of this early gothic castle defies military or political logic. It is said that Houska was built to close the “Gateway to Hell.” Apparently, demonic activity had been disturbing the region for some time and a giant bottomless pit was thought to be the source. Naturally, Bohemian officials erected a castle and chapel over it to seal the gate. This was not before they lowered prisoners into the pit as punishment, and pulled them out
to find they had aged 30 years. Houska is also the site of Nazi occult dabbling in the 1930’s. It is unclear what went on here, but several Nazi skeletons were discovered at the site many years later. In terms of ghosts, Houska has them all, ranging from a bullfrog/human creature, a headless horse, and an old woman. It is also believed that the site contains nonhuman remains of demonic beasts who escaped the pit. This isolated castle is a perfect day trip outside of Prague. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, you’re sure to get spooked by the Silence-of-the Lambsstyle pit and the eerie pointlessness of the castle.
CHARLES BRIDGE SCARINESS rating:
444
The stunning Charles Bridge may be one of Prague’s top tourist attractions today, but it has a dark past. After the 27 leaders of the anti-Habsburg revolt were executed in June of 1621, 12 of their severed heads were suspended in iron baskets from the towers at each end of the Charles Bridge. The heads remained there for over a decade, according to historical engravings of the event. That’s not the only morbid link in the bridge’s history. Czech martyr St. John of Nepomuk was thrown off the bridge in the 14th century after he refused to divulge to King Wenceslas IV the queen’s confessional secrets. But even that horror comes with a silver lining—touching the plaque commemorating the event on the bridge is said to bring good luck.
Prague Castle SCARINESS rating:
A Deal with the devil The faust house SCARINESS rating: 4 4 4
Nowadays, the Faust House of Charles Square belongs to Charles University’s medicine department. But the centuries-old building has a mysterious history tracing back to the legendary Dr. Johannes Faustus, an alchemist and black magic practitioner rumored to have disappeared in the house after making a deal with the devil. Though the structure is named for Faust— who may or may not have existed—it’s been home to a number of mysterious
and otherwise eccentric figures. The list includes famed alchemists Eduard Kelly and Ferdinand Antonin Mladota of Solopysky, along with Karl Jaenig, a 19th-century inhabitant who maintained a functional gallows and slept in a coffin. If that’s not enough to give you chills, you might also hear the area referred to as Na Morani. In medieval times, the site is said to have been used to make sacrifices to the dark goddess Morana.
444
This 9th-century castle complex located in northern Prague is haunted by more than just the Czechs’ unfulfilled expectations for the current president. In fact, it is widely considered the origin of defenestration, a fancy term for the act of ousting a leader by throwing him out of the window. Prague’s first defenestration occurred in the town hall in 1419. But the most notable case occurred at the Prague Castle in 1618, when two imperial governors and their secretary were thrown from a window, sparking the Thirty Years War. The Prague Castle has also been a hub of leadership through old Bohemian rule, the Habsburg dynasty and into modern presidencies. Walking through the grounds, visitors can feel the weight of history on their backs.

Men with balls
Brixton BallS BRING MEATBALLS TO PRAGUE BY Sam Spengler
Everyone dreams of quitting their job and finding something fun and totally different to do, including Tim Simenon. Simenon, who hails from the U.K., was an electronica and hip-hop artist producing under the name Bomb the Bass. And although he saw major success throughout his career, even working with music greats such as Depeche Mode and David Bowie, he was ready for a change. Fine-dining veteran Luděk Netušil was also ready for a change. Starting at the age 17 and having worked in some of Prague’s finest restaurants, Netušil was ready to venture from being a restaurant employee to owner. Like all great parternships, their meeting was by chance. On Simenon’s occasional visits to Prague from time to time, he would frequent the restaurant where Netušil, a native Czech, worked in the front of the house. The pair quickly became friends. Simenon had always loved to cook, and thought something in the food industry might be in his future. Together they created the concept of Brixton Balls. Located in the Vinohrady neighborhood, Brixton
Balls is an intimate restaurant that seats about ten and features walk-up style ordering. In true streetfood fashion, the menu is small and distinctive. The “balls” from its title describes their specialty: meatballs. However, the menu is more than just meat, and even includes tuna, vegetables and even cheese. Patrons can choose from a variety of sauces and sides to create a one-of-a-kind concoction. “We wanted something fun and not too serious,” said Simenon. “We wanted it to be representative of who we are. I’m a foodie, not a trained chef, and I’m not trying to be something I’m not. But no one was doing meatballs in Prague.” From the start, it was decided Brixton Balls would be a two-man operation, with Simenon and Netušil doing it all. It not only allowed them both to interact with customers, but also get to know their business and their product. The two set about creating their restaurant in an Vinorhady storefront in what was previously an electrical supply shop. On its opening day at the end of June, the restaurant sold out in two hours, often with a queue leading outside. Simenon described the day as a massive shock; promising, but stressful.
“I was euphoric, but then I realized I had to clean up and do it all again.” Although adoring customers never really knew it, the first few weeks were difficult, as Simenon and Netušil learned to deal with the demand of their new creation. But in time, the two have developed a nice working rhythm, casually chatting with patrons while they work their culinary magic. They are open Monday-Thursday 12:00-20:00, but are extending their hours to Tuesday-Saturday 12:00-20:00 beginning on 1 November. If you visit later this year, don’t be surprised to find the menu has slightly changed. “The menu is constantly evolving,” said Simenon. “We want to keep it interesting for ourselves.” They are currently working on creating a meatball sub and pita sandwich, and they even hope to add breakfast options sometime in the future. As for his former career, Simenon says he’s content enjoying music as a listener now, with no plans to return. It’s all meatballs from here. “You gotta do one thing and do it well,” says Simenon. Brixton Balls has certainly kept up with this belief; as anyone who visits must admit, they do balls well.

Czech brand Although there were moments things may have looked bleak for these three very different Czech products, all came back to make their mark on the world with style.
RETURN OF "THE PIG" 1950's SCOOTER GOES HIGH TECH Česká zbrojovka Strakonice was a man’s man’s company. They produced firearms – pistols, rifles, and automatic guns. And when they weren’t producing firearms, they were producing motorcycles. Fast motorcycles. Motorcycles that won awards. In fact, they took home seven Motocross World Championships and fifteen International Six Day Trial Victory trophies over the years.
14
So, when their Cezeta model appeared, it must have been a big shock. It certainly wouldn’t win any speed competitions. It was a scooter. And even more shocking was the design. With it’s exposed gas tank mounted over the front wheel at the nose of the bike, it certainly stood out compared to it’s Italian counterparts like the Vespa. It didn’t take long for the Cezeta to get the nickename “the pig” for it’s unusual shape. But It didn’t take too long for “different” to become “endearing”, and thanks to the scooter’s quirkiness, Česká zbrojovka was selling a lot of Cezetas. But then just as quickly as they appeared, production stopped in 1964. No one
THE PRAGUE VISITOR | OCTOBER 2016
really knows why. Maybe they were just “too fun” for then-communist Czechoslovakia. When Česká zbrojovka closed it’s doors in 1997, many assumed the Cezeta was gone forever. But now, after half a century without production, Čezeta is reannouncing itself, this time however as a luxury electric scooter. Quick and thrilling performance, quality materials and high tech accessories are the main benefits of the new Type 506. For 2017,Čezeta plan to manufacture approximately 800 bikes in the Czech Republic. Thanks to its peak 8kW electric motor, the Čezeta 506 can reach a top speed of 100 km/h and has a range up to 200km (with battery pack option for 10kWh). “ Charging of the 5kWh standard pack lasts about 4.5 hours and we are working on a fast charge system that willcharge the battery completely in 25 minutes ” says Neil Eamonn Smith, constructor of the new Čezeta and the battery pack. In addition to zero emissions and minimal operating expenses, the Čezeta 506 uses new technologies – for example the option to control performance with a mobile App. Thanks to its silent operation, it is possible to ride and listen to
music through its built-in Bluetooth speakers. Future owners of the Čezeta 506 will be able to choose from a range of colours, including the original two tone retro combinations. “ Those who desire for a really unique style have the option to order a customised handpainted version finished to their specification ” adds Smith. Unique accessories include a matching trailer, windshield and luxury leather travel bags. Our staff was fortunate enough to be allowed to take the prototype out when shooting this month's cover. The scooter's instant torque, fun design and comfortable suspension left us not wanting to give it back at the end of the day. Even more fun was watching people over the age of fifty reconcile the nostalgia of the bike with it's silent running. Cezeta Motors s.r.o. has begun accepting orders for its Type 506/01 for an introductory price of € 7000. It includes a full parts and service warranty for 3 years (including EU roadside assistance) extendable to 10 years. EU road registration is class A1. For information about the Čezeta 506, visit www.cezeta.com or stop by their showroom in the Prague City Centre at Panska Pasaz, Na Prikope 23, Prague 1.
HEART AND SOLE THE STORY OF BATA In the summer of 1895, Zlín shoe maker Tomáš Baťa was broke. To save money, Baťa began making shoes from canvas instead of leather. The desperate move paid off, and the company grew from 10 employees to 50 within a few years. Four years later, Baťa installed its first steamdriven machines, beginning a period of rapid modernization. In 1904, Baťa introduced mechanized production techniques that allowed the Bata Shoe Company to become one of the first mass producers of shoes in Europe. By 1912, Bata was employing 600 full-time workers, plus another several hundred who worked out of their homes in neighbouring villages. During World War I, Baťa’s employees increased ten times thanks to large military contracts. In 1914, The company opened its own stores in Zlín , Prague, Liberec, Vienna and Pilsen, among other towns. In the global economic slump that followed World War I, newly formed Czechoslovakia was particularly hard hit. With its currency devalued by 75%, demand for products dropped, production was cut back, and unemployment was at an all-time high. Baťa responded to the crisis by cutting the price of Bata shoes in half. The company’s workers agreed to a temporary 40 percent reduction in wages; in turn, Bata provided food, clothing, and other necessities at half-price. He also introduced one of the first profit sharing initiatives, transforming all employees into associates with a shared interest in the company's success. Consumer response to the price drop was dramatic. While most competitors were forced to close because of the crisis in demand between 1923 and 1925, Bata was expanding as demand for the inexpensive shoes grew rapidly.
Tomáš Baťa
The Bata Shoe Company increased production and hired more workers. Zlín became a veritable factory town, a "Bataville" covering several acres of land. On the site were grouped tanneries, a brickyard, a chemical factory, a mechanical equipment plant and repair shop, workshops for the production of rubber, a paper pulp and cardboard factory (for production of packaging), a fabric factory (for lining for shoes and socks), a shoe-shine factory, a power plant and a farming activities to cover both food and energy needs. Essentially, a self-sufficient community. Workers, or "Batamen", and their families had at their disposal all the necessary everyday life services: housing, shops, schools, hospital, etc. Baťa also set what became known as Baťa prices – numbers ending with a nine rather than with a whole number. In 1932, at the age of 56, Tomáš Baťa died in a plane crash during take
off under bad weather conditions at Zlín Airport. Control of the company was passed to his half-brother, Jan, and his son, Thomas John Bata, who would go on to lead the company for much of the twentieth century guided by their father’s moral testament: the Bata Shoe company was to be treated not as a source of private wealth, but as a public trust, a means of improving living standards within the community and providing customers with good value for their money. At the time of Tomáš Baťa ‘s death, the firm owned 300 stores in North America, a thousand in Asia, more than 4,000 in Europe. In 1938, the Group employed just over 65,000 people worldwide, including 36% outside Czechoslovakia and had stakes in the tanning, agriculture, newspaper publishing, railway and air transport, textile production, coal mining and aviation realms. After World War II, governments
in Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Poland and Yugoslavia confiscated and nationalized Bata factories, stripping Bata of its Eastern European assets. From its new base in Canada, the company gradually rebuilt itself, expanding into new markets throughout Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. Rather than organizing these new operations in a highly centralized structure, Bata established a confederation of autonomous units that could be more responsive to new markets in developing countries. After the Velvet Revolution in November 1989, it’s said that Thomas J. Baťa arrived as soon as December 1989. Bata stores began to reappear in the newly formed Czech Republic, and even though Bata is now a global company with over 65,000 employees, Czech's still affectionately think of Bata as their own.
For the record: GZ MEDIA Right about the same time as the Velvet Revolution, the compact disc was creating a revolution of it's own across the world. Just outside Prague, in the small town of Loděnice, GZ Media changed with the times and started manufacturing CDs. But whether it was fate or foresight, GZ Media made the decision to keep their vinyl pressing machines, and luckily they did.
In addition to producing CDs, DVDs, and packaging, GZ Media has become the largest vinyl record producer in the world - on track to producing a staggering 24 million records next year, which is roughly 25% of the world's vinyl market. U Sudu 7*
Vodičkova 10, Prague 1 www.usudu.cz Invisible for those who don’t know where it is and yet in heart of the town. U Sudu is the best of both worlds with a wine bar upstairs and an underground, cavelike labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic. As you go down into different floors, you just find caves and caves that serve you beer for a good price and also give you good music. COCKTAIL GUIDE
“I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day." - DEAN MARTIN Cockail bars in Prague get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
TrETTER’S 8@
V kolkovne 3, Praha 1 +420 224 811 165 www.tretters.cz The Tretter family has been in the bar business for over 90 years. So, no wonder it feels like you’re walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar from the moment you walk through the door. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. The drinks are incredible – custom cocktails and meticulously made classics, some with a new twist. Tretter’s gets absolutely packed, sometimes out of nowhere. The trick is a reservation, so you’ll want to call ahead.
PARLOUR 8$
Krakovská 15, Praha 1 +420 777 200 015 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be foundand that’s great with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, although it’s fastly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and find the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. When it comes to choices, the good news is you don’t have to worry about finding a menu in English, because there is no menu. Your bartender will ask you what you like and offer suggestions based on your input. The results are never less than spectacular.
L'flEUR 9$
V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha +420 734 255 665 www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s era feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The bar has a nice buzz to it on the inside, and for a while we almost forgot what year it was. There’s a lot of choices on the drink menu, and the signature drinks all come with their own history and story, which your bartender is always happy to explain. The drinks are amazing and original - ther’es simply no other way to desrcibe them.If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s vast and expansive Champagne list.

Reservations are taken only until 9pm.
PROLOG 8*
Nádražní 57/108, Praha 5 +420 775 005 007 www.prologbar.cz Prolog is about attention to detail, and they’ve clearly put thought into every aspect of their work. Take for instance, the drink menu. In 1907, an American Physician weighed patients just before and after death, concluding the weight of the soul to be 21 grams. That inspired Prolog’s 21 drink menu, serving as a reminder to patrons to celebrate life. Even more, seven of those 21 drinks are aptly named after the Seven Deadly Sins. For instance, the drink pictured here is the Sloth – a concoction of Magellan gin, chamomile cordial and Prosecco, all which lazily dawdle on a velvet pillow filled with chamomile.
LE VALMONT 9)
Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1 +420 224 267 266 www.levalmont.cz Le Valmont is a newcomer, only having opened in Spring, 2016. There is a strict dress code at Le Valmont; no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandles. Reservations are all but required- the 100 capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly.

BAR & BOOKS 8%8^ Manesova 64, Praha 2 +420 222 724 581
Týnská 19, Praha 1 +420 224 815 122 Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). Like it’s New York counterpart, the bar envokes the feeling of a gentleman’s libary. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (mostly for visual aesthetics). The cocktails here are serious business and they offer a wide selection to match what you’re craving. However, if you’re looking for a nice Cuban to go with your perfectly made cocktail, this is the place to be.
BONVIVANT’s CTC 8&
Bartolomějská 305, Praha 1 +420 775 331 862 Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with midcentury wood furnishings, pressed tin ceiling and checkered floor. When it comes to ordering, forget the menu. Just talk to your bartender. They’re a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your taste. Incidentally, the “CTC” actually stands for cocktail tapas café, and it hits the mark on each one, serving some pretty damn tasty tapes dishes and coffee as well.

It’s also a cigar-friendly cocktail lounge, with a great selection of cigars in the walk-in humidor near the entry. All Our Gods Have Abandones Us Tour: Architects + support Roxy Dlouhá 33
The British metalcorová of the bunch is undeniable in its genre average. If you’re a fan of this style, there is not much to deal with, you should be of interest to ARCHITECTS. If they are not, yet nothing is lost – “Architects” cross shadow and cliché typical for this genre, and the result of their efforts is a modern music that is neither překombinovaná nor primitive unnecessarily or too “emo”. Here we can find sufficient variety, color and stickiness. The way ARCHITECTS eclectically with available and proven elements of modern based, definitely not stupid, or whole or oposlouchaný. The band itself constantly working and growing – in just seven years, long enough to record four full albums and have played numerous concerts and festivals, has name recognition, valuable experience, and spurs as precise a live report.

Prague Burlesque Dames of Porcelain OPENS OCTOBER 14
David Jahn (Center) launched Prague Burlesque in 2007. Their latest production Dames of Porcelain starts on October 14, with a Gala-Premiere to take place on October 21. The show then runs every Friday night through June 2017 at Prague’s historic Royal theatre. Tickets can be purchased at TIcketportal.com or by visiting PragueBurlesque.com.
BY TATIANA CIRISANO When David Jahn unveiled his first installment of the Prague Burlesque in fall 2007, it wasn’t just a career milestone for the filmmaker and musician. The show was also Prague’s first burlesque performance in more than a century. Now an internationally-touring troupe, the famed Prague Burlesque continues to make waves in Prague’s art scene. Its newest season, Dames of Porcelain, is a homage to Czech film director Juraj Herz that kicks off this month. Though Jahn is keeping the exact storyline under wraps, he told us the show will transport guests from baroque atmospheres all the way to ‘60s sci-fi film settings. The main stars will remain the same—Angelina Angelic, Lady Mousellyca, Miss Cool Cat and Jahn’s own onstage persona, MC Sonny Vargas—but the season comes with a fresh cast of go-go dancers. They’ll be accompanied by a “strange footman” who will mix drinks onstage, Jahn said. “People shouldn’t miss their chance to see the most exquisite burlesque show in Prague,” Jahn continued, adding that “special guests” from around the world are already booked for select nights.
The first burlesque performances sprung up in the Czech Republic at the turn of the 19th century, though the word itself has been used to describe parodies and similar art imitations since the 1500s. A resurgence began brewing in Europe and North America in the 1990s, and cities like Berlin and New York have since caught onto the glitz, glamour and tease of burlesque. But the last burlesque show to hit Prague (before Jahn’s troupe, that is) took place in 1910, and it wasn’t until Prague Burlesque that a revival took off in the Czech Republic. It’s safe to say theatre comes naturally to Jahn, a former student of Prague’s Academy of Fine Arts who grew up with two opera singers for grandparents. Later on, he was inspired by American neo-burlesque star Dita Von Teese as well as the Velvet Hammer Burlesque, a Los Angeles-based revival troupe founded by Michelle Carr in the ‘90s. With a wild group of performers from across Europe, Jahn and his troupe have managed to singlehandedly turn Prague into a burlesque capital. Their shows aren’t for the faint of heart—expect tassel-adorned nipple pasties, conveniently-placed feathers, and larger-than-life martini glasses made for swimming. But burlesque isn’t the same as straight striptease, though confusing the two is a common mistake known
to irk theatre geeks. Like other burlesque enthusiasts, Jahn aims for the artistic side of eroticism, celebrating fantasy instead of hiding it. Many would be surprised to know that burlesque has its origins in classical literature: the term has been used to characterize the parody works of writers from Chaucer to Shakespeare. Nowadays, burlesque performances in Prague and elsewhere combine dancing and singing with elaborate costumes that often disappear, piece by piece, by the end of the night. “We live for this magical moment...to see happy people, relaxing and sharing their experience together with us,” Prague Burlesque’s mission statement reads. “We want to pull them out of stereotypes and let them be carried away by erotic beauty and fantasies.” The season officially begins October 14, with a GalaPremiere to take place on October 21. From there, guests can catch Dames of Porcelain every Friday night until June 2017 at Prague’s historic Royal theatre. As for first-time show-goers, the troupe has some advice. “Go on a wild ride with no restrictions. But be careful! Ladies are not made of porcelain!” 33

“I never give the key away. When I’m asked by people, I usually say that it’s from a chastity belt. And they usually laugh and let me be. Which I’m fine with. Even though I work at a theatre and as a bartender, I’m quite introverted. And the key symbolizes that. But for me it’s more of a key to memories. Of my ex-boyfriend who gave it to me, and of my dad above all, he passed away five years ago. It may sound like a cliché but I think of him every day. Everytime I hold the key in my hand, I know he’s with me.” “He was peculiar. And very closed up. But incredibly honest and solid. Sometimes too much. He had an itinerary for every day and once it was shattered – even though in terms of ten, fifteen minutes – and it was either mine or my sister’s 34
fault, he stopped speaking to us for the whole week. These things used to make me and my sister upset back then but now it makes me laugh. But most of all, I remember our hugs. My parents lived in Pelhřimov and I went to the high school in Prague. Every weekend I would go to my parents’ for those hugs. He was a great support for me – he was able to express the support even without any words, every time I needed him, he was there for me. And in puberty you need your parents all the time, even though you pretend you don’t.” “I studied tourism in Prague but my friends here brought me to theatre. That was the main reason why I went to Prague after finishing secondary school. I was very young, my parents weren’t really into this idea but my dad told me that if there was

something which could make me happy, that I had his full support. That’s why I always strived to live so as he could be proud of me. He loved fine arts, my parents taught me to appreciate it since I was four. When I was thirteen, I wanted to avoid a Scout summer camp, so I went to a theatre camp instead and during those ten days fell in love with theatre and wanted to become an actress. That passed quite quickly but the theatre connected with fine arts and I started to do scenography. And later on, as a daughter of an electrician, lighting design. For a year and a half I prepared for the entrance exams at universities abroad and today I’m accepted to a theatre school in London which is one of the best in the world. I start on 3rd of October. And I’m carrying the key with me.”
