History loves rebels. Remember, remember! The fifth of November, The Gunpowder treason and plot; I know of no reason Why the Gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot!

Every child in England certainly knows November 5th and the famous rhyme marking Guy Fawkes Night, when across Great Britain there are bonfires and fireworks. Fawkes, of course, attempted to blow up the House of Lords in 1605, but failed and was executed. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, the people began a tradition of lighting bonfires, originally callled “The Gunpowder Treason Day.” But within a century, history fondly embraced the image of Fawkes, and the holiday has become known simply as Guy Fawkes Day.

History, it seems, loves rebels. And David Černý is certainly that. In our interview for this month's issue, we found him polite, charming and brutally honest. Of course, we’re sure there are those in some circles who probably don’t care for him or his work. But, the world needs the likes of David Černý. Černý makes a statement about society and about the world around us. Without people like him, we would find ourselves with less social reflection. What’s undeniable and overlooked is Černý’s positive impact on Prague and the Czech Republic. Černý’s work scattered across Prague has become an attraction in itself, with visitors searching it out, much the way they would Charles Bridge, the Lennon Wall, Petřín Tower, or the Dancing House. Even if you don’t always agree with the political

statement it makes, Černý’s ability to draw a crowd has to be admired. And the work is damn good, leaving you wondering “how did he do that?" Then there’s the MeetFactory – a “multicultural supermarket” as Černý calls it, which is sure to be the breeding ground for future artists and musicians for generations to come. Cerny’s latest exhibition ‘Black Hole’ runs Oct 27 through Nov 29 at Dvorak Sec Contemporary Gallery. And for your full Černý fix, we’ve also provided a map to nearly all of Černý’s public work in Prague. We also have a lot more to share with you this month, including over 400 events in our calendar. There’s a lot great things to do - concerts, exhibitions and events. Enjoy November!

Their jarring pop sound influenced bands such as Nirvana, Radiohead, The Strokes, Blur and Weezer. Their popularity grew in the years following their break-up, leading to sold-out world tours following their reunion in 2004. In June 2013, they released their first new material in almost 10 years. The Pixies' music contains elements including psychedelia, noise pop, hard rock, surf pop, and surf rock. If you're into music that matters in rock history, go to this show. Philip Glass Wednesday, November 11 Philip Glass' music style has been dubbed as “minimalism.” But, there has been nothing “minimalist” about his output in the last 25 years. Now 80, Glass has composed more than twenty operas, large and small; ten symphonies (with others already on the way); two piano concertos and concertos for violin, piano, timpani, and saxophone quartet and orchestra; soundtracks to films ranging from new scores for the stylized classics of Jean Cocteau to Errol Morris’s documentary about former defense secretary Robert McNamara; string quartets; a growing body of work for solo piano and organ. He has collaborated with Paul Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Yo-Yo Ma, and Doris Lessing, among many others. He presents lectures, workshops, and solo keyboard performances around the world, and continues to appear regularly with the Philip Glass Ensemble. CHASING

ČERNÝ PRAGUE’S ICONIC PROVOCATEUR TALKS HIS FAVORITE WORK, NEW EXHIBITION, AND REBELLIOUS REPUTATION. By Tatiana Cirisano David Černý, the iconic Czech artist and provocateur, is used to running late, says the manager at his Prague art center and studio known as MeetFactory. More often than not, his reputation precedes him. At age 23, a young Černý was arrested after painting a Soviet tank war memorial in Prague bright pink. He’s since shocked the art world with his bizarre, politically-charged installations, from a bronze sculpture of two men peeing into an enclosure shaped like the Czech Republic to an enormous middle finger he once floated down the Vltava river. Now in his forties, the controversial artist is this month launching Black Hole, a solo exhibition at the Dvorak Sec Contemporary gallery in Old Town. Featuring never-before-seen art from the past three years, it’s the latest in a long lineage of deviant works that have earned Černý recognition both in Prague and the international art scene. In person, Černý is only slightly less intimidating than his work suggests. The man who finally arrives for our interview at MeetFactory bears a disheveled mop of jet-black hair to match his allblack attire, resembling more of a rock star than artist. “I’ve done too many interviews in my life,” he begins, rubbing his face with his hands. “They usually never ask anything new.”

By contrast, Černý’s life seems constantly in flux. He’s been in and out of the studio all week, where he’s just installed a new robotic tool for his sculpture work. Soon, he has to run to meet a transport dropping off equipment for a band playing at MeetFactory tonight. Černý founded the Factory in 2001 as a nonfor-profit theatre, concert venue, art studio and residency program. It’s just another one of his seemingly endless landmarks in the city, which number 14 at the moment, to be exact. Needless to say, Černý’s reputation for breaking the status quo is as strong as ever. Just last month, he unveiled “Trifot”—a towering, googly-eyed robot outside the Czech Photo Center—though he insists the structure isn’t a robot, but an embodiment of Big Brother. “You have to be the part, and you have to obey the rules, and I never did it,” Černý says, pushing a half-empty Club-Mate across a cafe table inside the Factory. “I was more or less having fun. And that’s unforgivable.” Still, Černý’s shocking works have made him one of the only contemporary Czech artists to catch international attention. In the ‘90s, he completed residencies in New York City at the Museum of Modern Art’s PS1 and the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program. He’s a laureate of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award, one of the Czech Republic’s most prestigious awards for young visual artists. He’s had solo

exhibitions in galleries from Budapest to Rome, London, and Berlin, and next year, he’ll have an exhibition at Prague’s National Gallery. In the U.S., he’s sometimes referred to as the “Czech Banksy,” recalling the anonymous graffiti artist, though Černý would be likely to correct the misnomer. Černý’s work came first. Petr Šec, an art collector and co-founder of Dvorak Sec Contemporary gallery, has been following the artist’s career since his pink tank prank in the ‘90s. “Černý is a longtime star of the Czech contemporary art scene,” Šec explains. “He’s an internationally-renowned artist, so it was only a matter of time before we started to represent him.” Black Hole, which runs through Nov. 29, will be Černý’s second solo exhibition at Dvorak Sec— his first, in 2013, showcased a series of portraits. This time, the exhibit will include stainless steel, monumental sculptures up to five meters high along with reliefs hung on the walls. Šec thinks that what sets Černý apart isn’t just his controversial style and skillful artistry, but also his ability to record history with his art. “There is no one like Černý,” continues Šec. “He has an ability and courage to come up with ideas which reflect the political and social shifts in society.” But you can’t court controversy as relentlessly as Černý without earning a few enemies along the way. His sarcastic take on country stereotypes

Černý's 2012 temporary piece, "Fuck You Mr. President," a 30-foot purple hand floating down the Vltava, points a middle finger at the Prague Castle and its primary inhabitant .

“Entropa” sparked a diplomatic spat that reached across the globe in 2009. And Černý is a known rival of former National Gallery Director Milan Knizak, from whom he refused to accept a museum award in 2000. “Černý is a controversial personality,” Šec adds. “If you are not ready for that, he might be able to hurt you, [but] he is a great artist.” Working with Černý is a similar story. Michal Brenner, who has been the music program manager at MeetFactory since 2010, says it’s the “best job” he’s ever had. And even though he occasionally quarrels with Černý over aesthetics, Brenner says the artist truly respects those with whom he works. “[Černý] is crazy, which is a good thing,” Brenner says outside the Factory’s concert hall. “But I think he has a respect for what I do, and he doesn’t interfere.” Černý has mentioned that much of his work stems from anger, built up from his childhood under communism and the deep reaction he had—even as a kid—against it. “You realize that in the moment when the teacher is pushing you to know something and say something which is not true,” Černý says. “As a child, you know that there is something wrong when your parents are telling you, what you hear at home, you should not repeat at school.” Never one to follow rules, Černý remembers muttering an insult about Vladimir Lenin in kindergarten. Immediately, the school called Černý’s parents: “If he were to be heard by somebody else,” a teacher warned, “he might get into trouble.” It was the first time a young Černý faced backlash for his beliefs, but it certainly wouldn’t 10

be the last. In elementary school, he was scolded for wearing American flags on his shoes; in high school, he spent his share of nights in prison for attending anti-Communist demonstrations. “It was quickly explained that I should not say certain things,” Černý adds. But Černý maintains that he doesn’t really care what others think of his work. In fact, he feels somewhat separate from the Prague art scene, proper. “I’m part of the ‘Prague art scene’ just because I live here. Otherwise, the Prague art scene hates me,” Černý says, laughing. “I don’t even think that if you hit on the Prague scene and say my name, that they will say they know me.” Part of this detachment stems from Černý’s refusal to, as he puts it, “play the part” of an artist by attending gallery openings or giving interviews. Growing up as the son of two artists—his mother a restorer; his father a graphic designer—Černý says he was “dragged” to these events, and developed a distaste for them early on. Now, the artist insists that if anything, his art has only become darker over time: “I am more depressive, and negative, and nihilistic than I was before,” he says, though his words come with a sly smile. Still, Černý’s name is also attached to a number of apolitical works that are known more for their pure aesthetic beauty than anything else. Take his 42-layer rotating sculpture of Franz Kafka’s head, a marvel which sits in the middle of the busy Quadrio shopping center near Národní třída. And despite his rebellious reputation, Černý can be warm and irresistibly charming. When relaxed, he has a hearty, raspy laugh that fills the room, and a buzzing energy that prompts him to

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | NOVEMBER 2016

spontaneously swing on ceiling rails or jump up stairs. He’d never bring up the black Porsche 911 convertible that sits in his driveway, but his eyes light up when anyone inquires who it belongs to. And when his phone rings midway through our interview, I recognize the opening riffs of Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times” in his tone. It’s a softer side of the artist that emerges especially when talking about his school years at the University of Applied Arts in Prague, like when he managed to snag a key to the school and would sneak in after hours of partying on the streets. “The party was basically ongoing, endless,” Černý recalls with a laugh. “I don’t understand why my kidneys actually survived.” But when asked about the future, Černý, for once, is silent. “That’s a question I’m giving myself,” he admits after a few moments. “If you’re 20, 22 [years old], you don’t see the horizon. The horizon is some-fucking-where, it’s far away, it’s endless,” he continues. “But in certain moments you see that there has to be some end.” Černý would like to have children, or as he puts it, “to replicate.” And if he grows tired of making art, his back-up plan is to become a pilot—in fact, he’s already through the flight training required. But as the artist admits, he doesn’t exactly have a plan. It’s a work in progress. ‘Black Hole’ runs Oct 27 through Nov 29 at Dvorak Sec Contemporary Gallery, Dlouhá 923/5, 110 00 Praha 1. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 13:00 to 19:00. Closed Sunday.

THE MEETFACTORY

Černý's "multicultural supermarket" connects the arts Driving up Nádražní in the industrial Smíchov district, it’s hard to miss MeetFactory, an industrial building flanked by two enormous fiberglass red cars, hung on either side by two equally enormous nails. The car sculptures, of course, are the work of Prague artist David Černý, and MeetFactory is his contemporary arts center and studio. Founded in Holešovice in 2001, but forced to move to Smichov after the destructive floods of 2002, the non-forprofit institution serves as a home away from home for writers, theatre directors, visual artists, and other international creatives. Černý says MeetFactory is inspired by PS1, an art institution at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art where he completed a one-year residency in 1994. “I was thinking about trying to find a space for a similar institution, and this happened,” Černý explained, lounging at a bar table in the Factory. “I wanted to make a multicultural supermarket.” That it is. The mammoth building is complete with a theatre, concert venue, three galleries, and 16 art studios, along with an artists-in-residence program which hosts more than 30 international artists of every medium each year. It’s run by an administrative board, which is made up of Černý, musician David Koller, and Czech filmmaker Alice Nellis. Originally erected as a warehosuse for a glasswork factory in the 1920s, the building itself is a work of art. Inside, industrial-looking walls and wrought-iron fixtures are highlighted by the glow of bright red neon lights, which match the bar and cafe’s fire-engine red wooden chairs and tables. Walking through its concrete halls, the maze-like building appears to have endless nooks and passageways—secretly hidden among them, Černý’s own studio.

And MeetFactory wouldn’t be complete without a mark of classic Černý sarcasm: a lifelike sculpture of a slab of raw meat greets guests at the bar downstairs. Michal Brenner, the space’s music program manager and longest-serving employee, remembers nearly a decade ago when MeetFactory was merely an idea, and the building an abandoned space. “It was really squatted, we had to build the venue from scratch,” Brenner recalls, describing the building’s emptiness at the start of the project. “There really was nothing here.” Brenner left his old gig as an independent promoter to officially join MeetFactory in 2010, and he claims it’s the “best job” he’s ever had. Though Prague’s art scene has in recent years expanded to include a number of theatre, music and art venues, he thinks MeetFactory is unique in its ability to join multiple forms of art in one space. It’s all part of Černý’s original goal: to connect Prague to the international art world and foster relationships between artists and the community. MeetFactory even puts on regular “Open Studio” days, where visitors can roam the building’s 16 studios and talk to the artists-in-residence. On any given day, “Open Studio” events may cover anything from a presentation of contemporary Mexican video-art to an interactive workshop led by a resident artist. Currently, there are seven artists-inresidence at the Factory, hailing from hometowns as near and far as Austria, the United States, and France. Keeping with its emphasis on connecting creatives, each of the Factory’s components makes it a priority to expose up-and-coming artists in addition to the more well-known. Though Brenner only hires bands he actually listens to himself, he adds that the Factory

doesn’t “really do big Czech bands.” “They should be a new name, because that’s part of the focus of the venue—to bring artists that haven’t played in the Czech Republic before,” he explains. In the past, this has included acts like the U.S.based Animal Collective, Ratatat, and Caribou, as well as the birthday party of ‘80s German industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten and, more locally, the launching of MIDI LIDI’s third studio album and a soldout WWW concert. Though Brenner says the theatre sector has perhaps the least international audience, as most of the plays are performed in Czech, the space has hosted a number of global successes, like Hungarian theatre group Lakmusz Csopor. It’s also a hotspot for slam poetry, literary readings, and film screening parties. Brenner adds that while MeetFactory’s original vision remains strong, he and the other members of the institution are continuously changing to keep up with trends in the art world and new generations of creative thinkers. “We are constantly challenged to bring relevant content,” he says. “I wouldn’t want to grow old with our audience.” MeetFactory is many things—a place to watch theatre, visit an artist, discover a new band, or soak in an art installation. But to many of those involved with MeetFactory, the towering building wedged between a railroad and a motorway looks a lot like home. “We have all these four things together, and we try to work together, not just lock ourselves in our respective halls,” Brenner says about the Factory. “It’s still a small team, so of course we all know each other and we work together.”

Las Adelitas NACHO TYPICAL CZECH MEXICAN RESTAURANT

Friends Fernando Larios (Tijuana), Patricio Ibarguengoitia (Pachuca), Rodrigo Flores (México City) and David Zamorano (México city) have been bringing authentic Mexican food and drink to Prague since 2009.

By Sam Spengler When a group of Mexican friends began cooking their home cuisine in a small Prague apartment and delivering it throughout the city seven years ago, they were fueled by a craving for their native tacos, enchiladas, and burritos. What they didn’t realize was how much Czechs were craving it, too. Almost a decade later, the group that once took orders through Hotmail has become Las Adelitas, one of the most successful and authentic Mexican restaurants in Prague. “From the day we opened, we’ve never stopped having people,” says co-founder David Zamorano, who grew up in Mexico City. A taste off the menu, and it’s easy to understand why. Each of the chain’s three locations serves everything from steaming enchiladas drowned in the spicy-sweetness of mole sauce to soft corn tortillas stuffed with sauteed prickly pear cactus or

juicy beef flank and fresh pico de gallo. The flautas, or crisp-fried small tacos, are another crowd favorite, each smothered in just enough tart sour cream and chunky guacamole to offset the tortilla crunch. That’s not to mention the extensive margaritas menu, which offers the classic drink on the rocks or frozen in dozens (yes, dozens) of combinations, each with delicate presentation. If you go for the frozen option, don’t be surprised when your drink resembles more of an overflowing ice cream cone complete with fruit toppings than an alcoholic beverage. It’s a far cry from the city’s often bland interpretation of Mexican cuisine into soggy tortilla chips, mushy black beans and heaps of string cheese, sometimes referred to as “CzechMex.” “Throughout the seven years, we’ve learned a lot,” Zamorano continues. “We’ve always tried

to improve ourselves and our recipes, and we’ve always worked to separate ourselves as authentic.” In fact, everything about the restaurant screams authenticity—from the handmade "Talavera" tile imported from Mexico to the maracas-loaded music and the artwork on the walls. The four founders have big dreams for their restaurant, which is named for a Mexican folk song praising female military members of the Mexican Revolution. Recently, they’ve begun recruiting chefs straight from Mexico, and there is talk of even more expansion in the coming year. But for now, the four are content operating daily out of their flagship Vinohrady district location, where you can visit them anytime for a hearty bowl of guacamole and a margarita (or three). Until then—¡adios!

COCKTAIL GUIDE

“I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day." - DEAN MARTIN Cockail bars in Prague get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).

TrETTER’S 8@ V kolkovne 3, Praha 1 +420 224 811 165 www.tretters.cz

The Tretter family has been in the bar business for over 90 years. So, no wonder it feels like you’re walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar from the moment you walk through the door. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. The drinks are incredible – custom cocktails and meticulously made classics, some with a new twist. Tretter’s gets absolutely packed, sometimes out of nowhere. The trick is a reservation, so you’ll want to call ahead.

PARLOUR 8$ Krakovská 15, Praha 1 +420 777 200 015 www.parlour.cz

Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found- and that’s great with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, although it’s fastly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and find the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. When it comes to choices, the good news is you don’t have to worry about finding a menu in English, because there is no menu. Your bartender will ask you what you like and offer suggestions based on your input. The results are never less than spectacular.

L'flEUR 9$

V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha +420 734 255 665 www.lfleur.cz

L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s era feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The bar has a nice buzz to it on the inside, and for a while we almost forgot what year it was. There’s a lot of choices on the drink menu, and the signature drinks all come with their own history and story, which your bartender is always happy to explain. The drinks are amazing and original - ther’es simply no other way to desrcibe them.If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s vast and expansive Champagne list.

ANONYMOUS BAR 9#

Michalská 432/12, Praha 1 +420 608 280 069 www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS

Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender what you like and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the various drink menus as creative as the drinks themselves. Patrons are given a secret menu printed in UV ink, along with a small blacklight,

or you can view the latest specialties on a ViewMaster, which was brought to our table. Reservations are taken only until 9pm.

BONVIVANT’s CTC 8&

CASH ONLY BAR 8(

PROLOG 8*

Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with midcentury wood furnishings, pressed tin ceiling and checkered floor. When it comes to ordering, forget the menu. Just talk to your bartender. They’re a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your taste. Incidentally, the “CTC” actually stands for cocktail tapas café, and it hits the mark on each one, serving some pretty damn tasty tapes dishes and coffee as well.

Just around the corner from it’s older sibling The Hemingway Bar, this little gem is making it’s own name with cocktails like The One Dollar Baby, Kentucky Smash, and Pin-Up Martini (pictured below and made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne). It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and you guessed it - they don’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs.

Nádražní 57/108, Praha 5 +420 775 005 007 www.prologbar.cz

Prolog is about attention to detail, and they’ve clearly put thought into every aspect of their work. Take for instance, the drink menu. In 1907, an American Physician weighed patients just before and after death, concluding the weight of the soul to be 21 grams. That inspired Prolog’s 21 drink menu, serving as a reminder to patrons to celebrate life. Even more, seven of those 21 drinks are aptly named after the Seven Deadly Sins. For instance, the drink pictured here is the Sloth – a concoction of Magellan gin, chamomile cordial and Prosecco, all which lazily dawdle on a velvet pillow filled with chamomile.

LE VALMONT 9) Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1 +420 224 267 266 www.levalmont.cz

Le Valmont is a newcomer, only having opened in Spring, 2016. The cocktail lounge is connected to a dance club, making it versital for a night out. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Miles Forman movie by the same name, it’s decorated in 18th century French fashion with abusson floor carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandelliers by Preciosa. There is a strict dress code at Le Valmont; no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandles. Reservations are all but required- the 100 capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly.

BLACK ANGEL’S 8# Staroměstské nám. 29, Praha 1 +420 224 213 807 www.blackangels.cz

Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. Visually amazing with high cellar ceilings, chandaliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. The drinks are amazing The only downside to Black Angels is the influx of tourists which can pack the place, especially groups.

BAR & BOOKS 8%8^ Manesova 64, Praha 2 +420 222 724 581

Týnská 19, Praha 1 +420 224 815 122

Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). Like it’s New York counterpart, the bar envokes the feeling of a gentleman’s libary. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (mostly for visual aesthetics). The cocktails here are serious business and they offer a wide selection to match what you’re craving. However, if you’re looking for a nice Cuban to go with your perfectly made cocktail, this is the place to be.

BUGSY’S 9%

Pařížská 1068/10 - Praha 1 +420 224 810 287 www.bugsysbar.cz

Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up in 1992 just after the Velvet Revolution. They’ve seen a lot of changes over the years, but the constant has been their attention to details and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 Single Malt Whiskeys and 100 rums.

HEMINGWAY’S 9! Karolíny Světlé 26, Praha 1 +420 773 974 764 www.hemingwaybar.cz

Chances are, if you’ve asked someone, they’ve already recommended Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. Imaginative drinks (like cocktails served from tiny gasoline canisters and perfume bottles) and personal friendly service are two of the benchmarks that make Hemingway’s amazing. The bar’s philosophy is every bottom must have a chair, so you don’t experience that overcrowded feeling. Because of their popularity, Hemingway’s is almost always busy, so we would recommend a reservation or you’ll find yourself waiting outside.

Žižkov Television Tower Mahlerovy sady 2699/1, Praha 3 + 420 210 320 086 www.oblaca.cz

Better cocktails through science. That’s the philosophy of Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). Števlík deploys Molecular Mixology in his cocktail designs, exploring the physical and chemical transformations of ingredients that occur when making a cocktail. And what better laboratory for Števlík to create his un-conventional concoctions that high above Prague in one of the most unconventional buildings in Europe Žižkov Television Tower.

Cloud 9 sky bar and lounge 9^ Pobřežní 1, 186 00 Prague 8 + 420 224 842 999 www.cloud9.cz

Perched 40 meters up and atop the Hilton Hotel, Cloud 9 Sky Bar and Lounge is a lot more than just a hotel bar. With the Hilton's position nestled near several big international companies with large expat workforces, Cloud 9 Sky Bar and Lounge always has a diverse crowd. The drink menu is expansive, with a focus on Gin & Tonic creations from around the world, enriched by natural ingredients pared with delicious bites and snacks for sharing with friends. Thursday nights feature DJ events and live performance.

COCKTAIL OF THE MONTH L'FLEUR'S

MONA LISA The most famous painting in the Louvre is undoubtably the Mona Lisa. L'Fleur pays tribute to the masterpiece with a cocktail masterpiece of thier own. Leonardo da Vinci began painting the Mona Lisa in Florence, that's the reason L'fleur uses the best of the Florence territory. Grappa with a touch of Aperol, rosé vermouth and apricot liqueur goes well with french rosé champagne. This drink will surely put a smile on your face - perhaps even as mysterious as Mona Lisa's.

CLUB GUIDE

Our Quick Guide to where all the cool kids go AFTER MIDNIGHT

Roxy 6%

Dlouhá 33, Prague 1 The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and best-known clubs. The venue was an old theatre/ballroom in the 1920’s, and has a great dance floor where you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and many other styles. When it’s not a live DJ, there’s great concerts and music festivals.

Lucerna 6^

Vodičkova 36 One of the largest and most popular music clubs in Prague, Lucerna hosts a lot of concerts and events. Lucerna Music Bar is hopping on Friday and Saturday night, where the 80’s and 90’s videos come alive on large projection screens in the middle of the disco. The stage in front let’s people dance in front of the screen in addition to the spacious dance floor. People of every age and all walks of life can be seen getting down to the music from Blondie to Nirvana. Ultimately the the sheer volume of people having a good time means it’s hard not to come to Lucerna and not join in the party.

Cross Club 6&

Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dance rooms pumping different types of music, includiing drum and bass, dubstep, reggae, techno, and house. The Cross Club’s psychodelic décor is also a bit unusual – everything in the club is made from metal and its all moving. The club is broken up into two music stages with many varying sized rooms for you to explore. One of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha. Grab an Uber, it’s a bit out of the center, but worth it.

Meet Factory 6*

A refurbished warehouse stuffed inbetween the motorway and railroad tracks, Meet Factory has become one of the cultural hot spots in Prague and is a must-see for anyone interested in local contemporary art.

M1 Lounge 6(

Masná 1, Prague 1 www.m1lounge.com M1 Lounge stands as one of the most exciting late-night venue in Prague. M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and a lot of passing-through celebrities. 20

It’s energetic yet laid-back vibe attracts a unique variety of people. The well known team of skilled DJs keeps the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music to the wee hours of morning & the friendly bar staff shake up original signature cocktails that are found nowhere else. If you pre reserve a VIP table you will be treated to first class bottle service. Perfectly located in the very center of the city, you can be sure that all night, every night, it’s always happening at M1 Lounge.

James Dean 7)

V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/ Okay, it’s kind of kitschy in a cool way. James Dean’s has a classic 1950s American diner feel, complete with checkered floors, red vinyl upholstery and lots of chrome. Famous for it’s larger than life statue of James Dean, it also has some of the best burgers, milkshakes, French fries and everything else good from American you can think of.

Vzorkovna 7!

Národní 339/11, Prague 1 www.unetickypivovar.cz This is the Prague underground. This place is something really different & alternative ambient is what you’re going to find here. If you’re sick of all the posh bars around, this is a great option how to escape from all that. Described as a huge, dark, squotlike place, packed with people with beer and lots of interesting individuals. They usually hold live performances there; you can discover really talented people and moreover, attend to a spontaneous jam session right in the hallway. There is no light at the entrance, just walk down the stairs, say hello to the wolfhound who is guarding the entrance and enjoy the evening.

NEONE 7@

Bubenská 1 www.lunchmeat.cz/ Neone started as a pop-up club but has grown into a well-established and respected club in Prague’s electronic music scene. They have superior sound system inside and great gigs. This is a place, where the latest trends in electronic music meet innovative visuals and creative ideas. If you are electronic music fan, you have to visit this venue when you are in Prague. They are organizing excellent parties there and Neone is recognized as one of Prague’s most hipster spots.

Radost FX 7#

Bělehradská 120, Prague 2 radostfx.cz Rodost FX was started in early 90s just a few years after the Velvet revolution, the

club was once Ministry as one of the top 20 clubs in the world! The club is open from Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of House, R&B/Soul and Hip Hop music and fun fact, Rihanna filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the Radost Restaurant and Cafe well known as one of the best brunch spots in all of Praguebut get there early because people line out the door for this deliciousness.

Klub 007 7$

Chaloupeckého 7 www.klub007strahov.cz Supporting underground and nonmainstream music since 1969, 007 is a legendary club on the Prague music scene. It’s history is rooted in student dissent, providing a welcoming space to students disenchanted with the former regime. 007 offers a healthy assortment of unique bands, DJs, and other musical acts. Music diversity is an emphasis: electro, indie, hip hop, punk, psychobilly and more can be heard on a weekly basis. One of the best parts of 007 is its size. It is small and intimate with a maximum capacity of 180 people. This is really the perfect opportunity to see awesome bands up close and personal. This is one of the oldest functioning clubs in Prague and if you’re into it take bus no. 176 up to the Strahov hill and enjoy the vibe...

RETRO 7%

Francouzská 75/4, 120 00 , Prague 2 www.retropraha.cz One for the curious bored or brave. Retro has become the Czech home of hard house. Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while gogo dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring.

SASAZU 7^

Bubenské nábřeží 306, Prague 7 http://prague.sasazu.com SaSaZu is a clubbers paradise with a feel of decadence as soon as you enter & not just an ordinary paradise but one with enough space for 2,000 partygoers. Located in the cool neighborhood of Holesovice, this hip club with it stylish, sleek interior attracts visitors and locals alike and impresses with top quality House, Dance, Funk, Ethno and Pop. Performing artists come from all over the world, Tiesto, Burama, Lilly Allen, Paul van Dyk, to name just a few. Club events mostly start at 22:00 and continue until the wee hours of the morning.

Chapeau Rouge 7&

Jakubska 2, Old Town, Praha 1 www.chapeaurouge.cz Chapeau Rouge is a music clubs that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Chapeau truly has something for everyone! You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square and usually has some cool kids smoking a joint right outside its doors. The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Go down one more floor and you’ll come across the dance club where international and local DJs blast out their beats playing pretty much 7 days a week with music in the main bar area being truly eclectic: everything from Balkan rhythms to drum & bass. Keep going down, down, down and you’ll get to the best part of Chapeau, the underground club – a space for indie bands, multimedia projections, and theater.

U Sudu 7*

Vodičkova 10, Prague 1 www.usudu.cz Invisible for those who don’t know where it is and yet in heart of the town. U Sudu is the best of both worlds with a wine bar upstairs and an underground, cavelike labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic. As you go down into different floors, you just find caves and caves that serve you beer for a good price and also give you good music. It is a place to sit down, meet new people and drink until the sin rises with a dark and intimate aura.

HARLEYS 7(

Dlouhá 18, 110 00 , Prague 1 Harleys is described as the coolest hell on earth. Prague’s best Rock bar opens late is always rockin n’ rollin with DJs and bar shows. This American style biker bar is a happening place & is also in a perfect location, just about 2 minutes walk from the Old Town Square. The bar is designed with a motorcycle theme; the entire placed decked out in Rock memorabilia ranging from Harley Davidson gear to Ramones & Jack Daniels posters. “Jack lives here” so you can bet that Jack Daniels is a specialty - as well as family sized bowls of mojitos. Harleys has loads of atmosphere, locals and tourists alike Harleys always guarantees a rockin’ experience.

Cafe society

Kavárna Slavia's 132 year history By Tatiana Cirisano It’s fitting that Aladár Lašanský, who plays live piano at Narodni coffeeshop Kavárna Slavia, has done so every evening for decades. The Prague mainstay is quite literally built on tradition, from its 1920s art deco interior to its long list of historic clientele. The iconic, 300-seat cafe opened across from the National Theater in 1884, intended to lure theatergoers for pre- and post-show drinks. It wasn’t long before Slavia earned a reputation as a gathering place for Bohemia’s culture scene, serving coffee to the likes of composer Bedřich Smetana, poet Jaroslav Seifert, and painter Viktor Oliva, whose famous “Absinthe Drinker” now hangs in the cafe above the most-reserved table. It’s not hard to imagine these legends huddling around the cafe’s cozy leather booths or window tables, which overlook postcard views of the Vltava river and more distant Prague Castle. But it’s not just famous figures who keep the cafe’s history alive—it’s also dedicated customers like Zuzana Matějková,

a regular who recently began working as the restaurant’s manager. Matějková, who has been visiting the cafe since she was girl, says the cafe serves as a reflection of Czech history. After the Velvet Revolution, she recalls the cafe’s transformation into a center for celebration. And when rumors spread that Czechoslovakia’s first president Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk would parade past the cafe, Slavia charged extra for window seats to watch. “Whatever is happening in Prague, it’s reflected here,” Matějková says through a translator. “How the cafe is, the nation is also.” Matějková has fond memories of visiting the restaurant with her parents as a child for her favorite dessert, a Czech dish of buttery cakes and cream known as buchtičky se šodó. She still orders the dish now, and it’s a good thing it’s still available— Matějková says the cafe’s most loyal customers are known to protest even the most minute menu changes. “Many people come here and they’re nostalgic,” she

says, stirring an espresso inside the cafe. “Whenever they move some tables or make some small change, the customers go to them and say, ‘why did you change it? It was like this when we were young!’” There’s only one nick in the cafe’s rock-solid history: in 1992, it was forced to close due to a thorny legal dispute. Slavia reopened in 1997, much to the delight of former President Vaclav Havel, who was a frequent guest of the cafe. Nowadays, the air is always filled with conversation, be it Czech businessmen conducting meetings, students from the nextdoor film school stirring cappuccinos, or bowtie-bearing waiters taking orders for dishes that have been on the menu for 130 years. And though traditional cafe society may be a thing of the past, Matějková says that Cafe Slavia isn’t letting go of its bohemian roots just yet. “There are still some mornings where people sit with the newspaper and take their time,” she says, sipping her coffee. “So you can sense the history here, somehow.”

In 2016, the piano festival bearing the name of Rudolf Firkušný is entering its fourth year. What artists will be appearing at this year’s festival? Garrick Ohlsson, a pianist with legendary technique and a phenomenal memory, has been appearing on concert stages around the world for nearly fifty years. A French critic has compared Martin Kasík to Vladimir Horowitz and Martha Argerich. His triumph at the internationally renowned Young Concert Artists Competition in New York in 1999 opened up his path to concert stages around the world. Alfred Brendel discovered Olga Scheps's talent, so it is thanks to him that the six-year-old girl who left Moscow with her family to settle in Cologne has become a pianist who is now giving concerts in Europe’s most prestigious concert halls.

Fortunately for his audience, Luboš has chosen the first option. Although performing rock and jazz music in the former totalitarian era wasn’t easy, Luboš endured this road for more than 35 years and remains loyal to his ideal of artistic freedom. Gentlemen Brothers

a modern twist on the old fashioned barber shop

By Sam Spengler Not everyone dreams of going into business with their sibling—for many, the thought is even daunting. But for Petr and Tomáš Kuckovi, it’s been one of the best choices they’ve ever made. Together, the siblings founded Gentlemen Brothers, a Czech men’s salon chain that revives the traditional, high-quality barber shops of the past over six locations in Prague. This October, the company celebrates two years of business. But their success hasn’t come easy—in fact, Gentlemen Brothers was born out of frustration. Unsatisfied by what they viewed as slow, unfriendly service at many barber shops in Prague, the two fell into the habit of picking out what they would do differently as future business owners. Far from being passive critics, the duo soon decided to take action. “From the beginning, quality service has been our main goal,” says Tomáš. “Good marketing gets people in the door, but to get people to stay, you need good service. It’s the base of everything.” For four months, the Kuckovi brothers prepared their concept with the soon-to-be third founder of Gentlemen Brothers, Petr's longterm girlfriend Šárka Růžičkova. This meant consulting with professional designers, marketers, and most importantly,

barbers—including a few from the centuries-old international barber company Truefitt & Hill. Gentlemen Brothers’ location opened on Vinohradská in 2014, and now sees up to 100 clients in its six chairs every day, the brothers claim. It’s been two years since, but the team is just as committed to a hands-on approach to business. In fact, the three said they worked until 4 a.m. on the morning of their most recent opening in Sokolovska last month. Even with six locations at their back, the trio isn’t slowing down. Inspired by globally-known companies like Truefitt & Hill, they hope to make Gentlemen Brothers an international name. And Gentlemen Brothers’ dedication to quality service has even expanded to chauffeuring services—call the shop, and a barber will pick you up, cut your hair, and drive you home. “The best part of my job is seeing happy clients,” Tomáš says. From the skilled barbers to the exclusive and ritzy, yet laid-back ambiance, Tomáš adds that customers always leave happy—and they keep coming back. While all six locations hinge on the same stellar

service, each is unique, the brothers explain. Some feature a full motorcycle as decoration, and the flagship location hosts a piano player every Wednesday and Friday. As for working with his brother, Tomáš believes it’s the best way to do business. While Tomáš is responsible for marketing and the education of staff, Petr runs the branches, and Šárka focuses on administration. Says Tomáš: “Who else can you trust more than your brother?” The only drawback, he says, is that the occasional business spat may carry over to the family dinner table—a minor consequence for the business feat they have accomplished.

"My dad was born in the Stromovka Park. There used to be a farm instead of the observatory nowadays and my grandma used to take care of cows. My grandpa used to be a farmer and used to have horses. There used to be lanes for horses in Stromovka which we used to run in when I was young. My dad was a baker, he was used to getting up early, so we used to run to Stromovka every Sunday. Because he had a teacher called Pařízek who used to tell them: Don’t smoke. Don’t drink beer. And go to Stromovka every day for a walk. Later my dad started to claim that it had been too damp in Stromovka and that had been better to 42

go to the Letná Park instead. So we used to go there. When I was ten years old, he signed me up for athletics on Sparta and it really grabbed me. When I was a boy, I remember myself cheering for Zátopek and when I was fourteen, I won my first races here at Letná. I still have a picture of it. You can see that many boys used to run bare feet. I wore canvas boots a few sizes bigger, they slapped the ground while I ran but thanks to them, my footstep was longer. Later on I became a cross-country run champion and my wife was a champion in rowing." "Sport means a world to me. Just as some people

say their prayers every day, I’ve been exercising every day my whole life. I even have my own mathematical model of the training. I plan to publish a book in which I will introduce it to people. It will be called "Quo Vadis?" – "Where are you going?" – with a subtitle: "Into the grave." Because the one who doesn’t exercise gets there quickly. I don’t train for a better performance anymore but for my health. Because I have a threeyear old grandson now and when we go down the hill, I cannot keep up with his pace!“
