Czech garnet…. red as blood, full of secrets, passions and magic. Did you know that the Czech garnet is, among other garnets mined in many locations in the world, as unique as the Colombian emeralds or the Burmese rubies? Garnets also have many legends. For centuries they have been considered as a stone of pilgrims and travelers who wore them as a talisman. According to legend, Noah had a lamp made of a garnet on his ark, which helped him navigate the ship in the evening darkness. It was rumored that glowing night garnets would protect their wearer from evil. In the Middle Ages, the Knights used the garnets not only for decoration, but also for their protective power from injuries, as it gave the warriors a sense of immortality. Another legend claims that tiny crystals of red garnets are fossilized drops of blood of the gods. Garnets symbolize fire, blood, and the heart, making it a favorite gift for wedding anniversaries or romantic gestures. Let yourself be inspired by the beauty of the Czech garnet, get to know its power and strength…. Today, Granát Turnov is the largest producer of jewelry made with unique Czech garnets., including the Czech garnet. It was created by the unification of smaller private companies of goldsmith tradesmen in 1953. In order to ensure the production of jewellery, Granát Turnov obtained an exclusive license to extract Czech garnets and became the owner of the mines which extract the raw garnet material. The original Czech garnet jewellery, made by the traditional manufacturer Granát, d.u.v. Turnov, is seen as one of the symbols of the Czech Republic. It is not only popular in our country, but sought after by foreign tourists, who take it as an exceptional souvenir.
There’s only one true Czech Garnet...Granát Turnov The cooperative is the owner of the trademark and of origin "Czech Garnet" and "Czech Garnet Jewellery". The Garnet team is registered with the hallmark and guarantees the authenticity of the precious metals and stones used. Each Ceramic Garnet comes with a Certificate of Gems and, together with the G-brand Gemstone, guarantees stone foundations and jewellery. Today's collection features a plethora of classical models that have been expanded over the last few years to modern jewellery design. This combination of Czech garnet and moldavin is very popular and this collection includes men's jewellery, children’s jewellery and also symbolic jewellery, such as crosses, hearts, stars, moon signs, letters and animals. We also offer a collection of ladies silver watches, gift items, glass and jewellery, all made from Czech garnet.

Ahoj, February! Valentine’s Day (February 14) isn’t widely celebrated here. In fact, the day of love didn't come along here until the 1990s. To us, that’s a good thing. Only a few restaurants are fully booked with fixed menus, and there’s no heavy marketing pressure to proclaim your undying love to your significant other with the expected Valentine’s gift. Instead, Prague offers what it always

Twelve ideas for Celebrating
Valentines Day
Although it's not a Czech thing, celebrating Valentine’s Day in Prague isn’t hard. The city is a living fairytale, and it only takes a glance at its stunning castles, charming cobbled streets, and baroque gardens to understand why. But if you’re head-over-heels and looking to amp up the romance even further this Valentine’s Day, we’re here to help. Whether your game is fancy wine bars, relaxing spa days or horse-drawn carriage rides, here’s how to kick your romantic side into high gear in Prague.
Enjoy a Cocktail
Go to the opera or symphony
Take a walk
Alright, we’ll be the first to admit it—the best love stories often start with a little alcohol. But we’re not talking drunken hook-ups at the dive bar. Kick off the night with a handcrafted cocktail at Parlour, a classy, hidden, hushed mixology bar just a few steps from Wenceslas Square with a cozy interior, locals-only feel and no menu. We recommnd going on from there to Crazy Daisy, which is just around the corner.
You can’t go wrong with a night at the National Theatre, one of the most stunning destinations in the city. The more than 130-year-old venue is home to opera, drama, ballet and laterna magika, a multimedia style that combines digital technologies with live performance. Can’t get a ticket to the National Theatre? No worries. The theatre is also connected to the equallyromantic State Opera, Estates Theatre, Karlin Music Theatre, and

New Stage, where laterna magika performances are held.
Going back to basics doesn’t have to be boring. Going for a walk in Prague is a romantic venture in itself, whether you’re hitting the historic Vysehrad fortress, panoramic Letna park, or the charming Naplavka river bank, where you can marvel at the white swans that dot the Vltava. For an extra dose of romance (or two), take a trip to Petrin Hill, where a miniature Eiffel Tower is surrounded by cherry tree gardens and a statue of romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha. Let’s just say there’s a reason couples line up
Have a glass of vino (or two) If wine is your thing, you’re in luck. Prague is home to a number of quality wine bars like Vinograf, a tried-and-true venue with three locations and one of the largest selections of Moravian and Bohemian wines in the city (we’re talking up to 350 options). For a more casual setting, head to Na brehu Rhony, a cafe-like spot that focuses on Cotes du Rhone wines and is close to the Vysehrad fortress, another stop on our romance guide. Or, make a night out of your wine tasting with a visit to Bokovka, a hidden gem of a wine bar co-owned by a group of Czech filmmakers, which means it also offers—you guessed it—a private cinema.

Horse-drawn carriage ride in Old Town Romance means there’s no limit on the cheesiness factor. Take advantage of this chance with a horse-drawn carriage ride through Old Town (come on, you know you’ve always wanted to). Just be prepared to pony up the cash, no pun intended. Head to the carriages lined up near St. Nicholas Church for a 20-minute ride that’ll set you back 800 to 1,000 CZK. Thankfully, each carriage seats four—make it a double date to half the cost.
Romance meter says: ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
Take a spa day You deserve it. We recommend the Corinthia Hotel, where the upscale Apollo Day Spa on the top floor offers a panoramic view of Prague from an indoor pool. But there are also a number of salt caves in Prague that both locals and visitors swear by for relaxation. For a traditional experience, you’ll find one of the city’s many mineral salt caves inside a 19th-century former brewery complex in the trendy Holešovice district. If you’re looking for something more...unusual...head to the beer spa located in Vinohradsky Dum. Yes, this actually does exist— here, you’ll bathe in in a special beer rich with microelements and vitamin B in a treatment known as balneotherapy. Finally, Aqua Palace is the spot for a more family-friendly venture. Drop the kids off at the water park and head to the “sauna world” and spa for a couple’s treatment. Lastly, nothing says Valentine's Day more than chocolate (don't worry - your New Year's resolution is safe). Tawan Massage Centers has three upscale locations in Prague and offers the "Hot Chocolate" massage, a theraputic massage in a hot chocolate wrap.

Prague Zoo Trips to the zoo shouldn’t be reserved for just kids. Especially in Prague, where the city’s zoo has been listed among the best in the world by the likes of Forbes and TripAdvisor. The Prague Zoo hosts nearly 5,000 animals and 650 species, so you won’t run out of things to see. Not only is the zoo a fun destination to marvel at penguins, tigers, giraffes, and other animals, but its location a few kilometers outside the city makes it a charming countryside getaway. Plus, we bet you didn’t know the zoo was originally intended to mark the marriage of the Crown Prince of Austria and the Princess of Belgium back in 1881. How romantic is that?

Dine on a night cruise Upgrade your dinner date with a cruise along the Vltava. With River Boats Prague, guests will enjoy a four-course meal and a free glass of prosecco alongside live music, not to mention breathtaking views of the Charles Bridge, Rudolfinum, National Theatre, Vysehrad, and the Dancing House. The all-inclusive cruise will set groups of two back 1149CZK per person for a two-and-a-half hour ride, but let’s be honest—an effortless, preplanned night like this is worth it.
Romance meter says: ❤ ❤ ❤
Get inspired by art Prague may be home to a wealth of interesting museums and exhibits, but we wouldn’t exactly call the Museum of Communism or the National Museum prime date spots. Instead, our pick is Galerie La Femme, an intimate space on Bilkova street that showcases contemporary Czech art. For a larger selection in a romantic setting, head to Museum Kampa, a modern gallery on the charming Kampa Island with various hidden nooks, winding staircases, and rooftop terraces.
Romance meter says: ❤
Seal your love with a lock on the Charles Bridge...but not forever Fastening “love locks” along bridge railings has become a traditional in cities from Rome to Paris, and Prague’s Charles Bridge is no exception. Just be warned—your grand gesture may be a wasted effort, as more than 30 kg of locks are removed every week by a group aiming to protect and restore the bridge. Hey, it’s the thought that counts. But if you are looking to make a more lasting mark, take some paint to the John Lennon Wall, where visitors and citizens alike have been leaving messages since before the Velvet Revolution. While your work will likely be painted over, it’s a less wasteful way to profess your love.
Upgrade your room
Romance meter says: ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
You’re already on vacation—why not go all out? A quick hotel room upgrade is possibly the easiest way to make Valentine’s Day feel special. If you're spending your stay in a hostel or AirBnb, why not upgrade? There's several Valentine's Day options, including the Dancing House hotel, a swanky building overlooking the Prague Castle that was inspired by iconic dance duo Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. (You can’t get more romantic than that.) Our tip—get a drink at the Glass Bar on the top floor, where you can gaze at epic views of the Prague skyline from wall-to-wall windows, or brave the cold on the bar’s terrace.
Romance meter says: ❤ ❤ ❤
Thrill Seek For those adrenaline seeking couples, Active Czech has an ice climbing adventure for you. A frozen waterfall outside of Prague in the mountain town of Liberec provides the backdrop for your adventure. A qualified instructor takes you through the process of becoming an ice climber in this three hour climbing course. You can also climb at night – which is a bit colder, but worth the view on a clear night. Equipment is provided. Check out activeczech.com to sign up.
Romance meter says: ❤
Have dinner with a view Don’t let Prague’s breathtaking views go to waste. Splurge on one of Prague’s many rooftop dining options, like the Dancing House's stylish Ginger and Fred, where you can enjoy adventurous dishes on the seventh floor of the building with views of the Prague Castle, Vltava River and Charles Bridge. Though it isn’t technically too far above ground, Manes is another restaurant with gorgeous views of Petrin Hill and Old Town.
ROMANCE METER:
Thoughtful without overdoing it ❤ Take your relationship up a notch ❤ ❤ Romantic Comedy level ❤❤❤ Don’t forget the engagement ring ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

ONLY 3 MINUTES WALK FROM "JIŘÍHO Z PODĚBRAD" METRO "A" STATION
We just wanted to build a cool bar. What we found was unexplainable, and completely terrifying. Introducing Prague’s most haunted bar and fear house.
We are the first fear house in Central Europe. Do you like horror stories and adrenalin? We are here for you. This scary tour of our underground space of more than 500 m2 will give you an unforgettable experience full of suspense. Come alone or with your friends or colleagues. The Fear House also has a horror bar where you can enjoy frighteningly good signature drinks, burgers, wings and more.

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | February 2018
.
First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.
Public Transport Tips:
Tram and Metro Map Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.

Cocktail of the month CRAZY DAISY'S "PERLOVKA" Located on Wenceslas Square, Crazy Daisy is one of our favourite new bars that's popped up. It's sensory oveload on every level as the beautifiul First Republic interior meets state of the art video projection, literally making the walls come alive. The staff are impeccably dressed in period attire and attentive to guests every whim, serving up mind-blowing drinks. Pictured here: Perlovka: Tanqueray, almond syrup, raspberry cordial, Campari, lemon- lime juice , raspberry crust, fresh lime juice Crazy Daisy | Václavské nám. 773/4, Praha 1 www.crazydaisy.cz

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | February 2018
COCKTAIL GUIDE
The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Tretter's
V kolkovne 3, Praha 1
www.tretters.cz
The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. Number 82 on the map. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations
Parlour Krakovská 15, Praha 1 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. Number 84 on the map. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations. L'Fleur V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Muchainspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. Number 94 on the map. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Anonymous Bar Michalská 12, Praha 1 www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm. Number 93 on the map. +420 608 280 069 for Reservations. Le Valmont
Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1
www.levalmont.cz Le Valmont is a newcomer, just opened in Spring 2016. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Just take note of the strict dress code at Le Valmont—no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandals. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly. Number 90 on the map. +420 224 267 266 for Reservations.
Black Angel's Staroměstské nám. 29, Praha 1 www.blackangels.cz Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations. Bar and Books
Manesova 64, Praha 2
and Týnská 19, Praha 1 Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings,
and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). Number 85 and 86 on the map.
they do serve amazing hot dogs. Number 89 on the map. No Reservations.
Bonvivant's CTC Bartolomějská 305, P1
Oblaca Žižkov Television Tower, Praha 3
Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. +420 775 331 862 for Reservations.
Bugsy's
Pařížská 1068/10, Praha 1 www.bugsysbar.cz Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum. Number 95 on the map. +420 224 810 287 For Reservations.
Hemingway's
Karolíny Světlé 26, Praha 1 www.hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended. Number 97 on the map. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
Cash Only Bar Liliova 3, Prague 1 www.cashonlybar.cz Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it—the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way,
www.oblaca.cz
High atop the Žižkov Television Tower, Oblaca is making better cocktails through science. Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). 92 on the map. + 420 210 320 086 for Reservations.
La Bodeguita del Medio Kaprova 19/5, Praha 1
www.labodeguitadelmedio.cz With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. There's a live Cuban band several nights of the week and an amazing cigar selection as well (La Bodeguita was one of the first cigar bars in Prague). . Number 97 on the map. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations.
Alchemist Bar Provaznická 1, Praha 1
www.thealchemistbar.cz A relative newcomer on the scene, Achemist is turning out quality prohibition style drinks in their ornate classicly decorated location at the bottom of Wenclases Square. Number 98 on the map. +420 251 510 940 for Reservations.
Crazy Daisy Václavské nám. 4, Praha 1
www.crazydaisy.cz Somewhat hidden at the bottom of Wenceslas Square, this one of our favourite new hotspots. First republic style interior, bar staff dressed the part and videomapping on the walls that pushes reality - it feels like you're in The Great Gatsby. Oh, and the drinks - amazing! Number 99 on the map. +420 273 130 486 for Reservations.
CLUB GUIDE Roxy Dlouhá 33, Prague 1
The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and bestknown clubs. The venue was a popular theatre and ballroom in the 1920’s, but now you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and other modern styles on the dancefloor. When the club isn’t hosting a live DJ, it’s the spot for concerts and music festivals.
Lucerna
Vodičkova 36
One of the largest and most popular music clubs in Prague, Lucerna is known for its weekly concerts and events. But it’s maybe most popular on Friday and Saturday nights, when the club’s huge projection screens come alive with 80’s and 90’s music videos. Partygoers of every age and all walks of life can be seen here, getting down to oldie hits from Blondie to Nirvana. Number 66 on the map.
Cross Club
Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz
Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dancefloors pumping music from dubstep and techno to reggae. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building, from the walls to the ceiling, is constructed to move and pulsate with the music. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha, but you might want to grab an Uber. Cross Club is a bit out of the city’s center, but worth the trek. Number 67 on the map.
Meet Factory
Ke Sklárně 3213/15 www.meetfactory.cz
This music club, art gallery, theater and cinema is the brainchild of David Černý, the artist responsible for some of Prague’s most famous (and controversial) modern art. A refurbished warehouse stuffed between a motorway and railroad tracks in Smíchov, Meet Factory transforms
by night into a hip bar and music venue, where you’ll find local singers and international tours alike. Number 68 on the map.
M1 Lounge Masná 1, Prague 1 www.m1lounge.com
M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and even passing-through celebrities, and it’s not hard to see why. The club’s well-known team of skilled DJs keep the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music until the wee hours of morning, and the upscale, luxurious atmosphere makes every night feel like a celebration. Number 69 on the map.
James Dean V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/
Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel turned nightclub late night. Number 70 on the map.
NEONE
Bubenská 1 www.lunchmeat.cz/
Neone got its start as a pop-up party, but it’s since grown into a well-established and respected club in Prague’s electronic music scene known for their superior sound system and live gigs. Electronic music fans, this is the spot where the latest trends in the industry meet innovative artists and dedicated fans. Number 72 on the map.
Radost FX radostfx.cz
Bělehradská 120, Prague 2
First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even
filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, wellknown as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague. Number 73 on the map.
Retro
Francouzská 75/4, Prague 2 www.retropraha.cz
One for the curious bored or brave. Retro has become the Czech home of hard house. Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while go-go dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring. Number 75 on the map.
Chapeau Rouge
Jakubska 2, Old Town www.chapeaurouge.cz
Chapeau Rouge is a music clubs that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Chapeau truly has something for everyone! You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Number 77 on the map.
U Sudů
Vodičkova 10, Prague 1 www.usudu.cz
U Sudu is the best of both worlds with a wine bar upstairs and an underground, cave-like labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest
places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic. Number 78 on the map.
Harley's
Dlouhá 18, 110 00 , Prague 1
Harleys is described as the coolest hell on earth. This American-style biker bar opens late and is always rockin’ and rollin’ with live DJs and music acts. It’s also in a perfect location, just a twominute walk from Old Town Square. Number 79 on the map.
La Loca
Odborů 278/4, Prague 2
Chic, fashionable and a whole lotta fun! One of the very first smoke-free establishments in Prague entertains the crowds all day every day. The night is the time when true party colours of La Loca show. International vibes mixed with a scrumptious selection of sizzling drinks are a guarantee of a big night-out. Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you'll very likely to create memories to remember for a lifetime.
Café 80's 8)
You can't go wrong with 80's music. Whether you're nostaligic or just appreciative of all things "totally awesome", the two-story venue does features an 80's themed café restaurant on the first floor. But, the real story here is the basement. A nicely sized music club with an illuminated dance floor, plus a large bar and VIP lounge make it a night worthy of the MTV generation. Number 80 on the map.

ROESEL
Good Eats
Roesel Beer & Cake just opened up a few months ago but they've quickly gotten the locals seal of approval. Located near Charles Bridge (across from McDonalds) they have a limited menu - but every item is amazing, from the soups to the cakes and of course the craft beer.
Located just down the road from Prague Castle (Nerudova 208/8), we love Good Eats not just for their delicious salads and healthier options, but we also love their breakfast - particularly the peanut butter banana pancakes.
NEAR BITES:
PRAGUE CASTLE
So you're in Mala Strana and you've seen Prague Castle - and now you're hungry. This month, we tell you about four of our favorite nearby restaurants with good affordable food. For even more options, visit our restaurant guide in the issue, or visit our Facebook and talk Golem, our friendly chatbot.
U Magistra Kelly U Magistra Kelly (located at Šporkova 521/5 just across from the German Embassy) is a classic small Czech Pub and Beer Garden. The variety of Czech beers, cuisine and atmosphere promise a delicious time and certain Instagram -worthy photo opps. Ask if they have the owner's homemade klabasa available.
Jo's Bar & Restaurant Jo's Bar and Restaurant (Malostranské náměstí 264/7) is always worth checking out. Our favourite here has to be the build your own burger, which has hundreds of delicious combinations, and it's under 200kc. Also, check out the cocktails!

the world of hamleys
three floors of attractions, toys and much more! By Helen Johnson
a labyrinth filled with lights, music and laser effects,
Hamleys has a wide and varied selection of
When is a toy store not a toy store? When it’s combined with three floors of attractions and live toy demonstrations – making it one of the largest places for kids of all ages to have fun in Prague. With a history that dates back to 1790 when it was founded by William Hamley, Hamleys remains one of the biggest, best and now oldest toy stores in the world. In 2016, the Czech Republic opened its first Hamleys store, located in the centre of Prague on Na Příkopě. When this store opened it was with the aim of replicating the essence of Hamleys, therefore offering a fun, immersive experience to its visitors. This store uses the Hamleys fined-tuned formula of mixing retail with entertainment, but has decided to introduce an entirely new concept. Hamleys Prague added a theme-park twist to the classic Hamleys experience and was the first of the flagship stores to introduce this innovative new concept, marking a huge step forward for the Hamleys brand. Karolína Prýmková, a member of the marketing team at Hamleys Prague, explains “There are many famous landmarks in Prague and we believe that with our unique concept, Hamleys Prague will become one of them”. This relatively new store in Prague hopes that their unique concept draws tourists in and makes it a must-see place to visit whilst in the city. Hamleys Prague has been a roaring success since opening its doors nearly two years ago and is now one of the biggest toy stores in Europe. This flagship store attracts almost three million visitors each year and is hugely popular during the Christmas period. The first attraction which draws customers in through its doors is the beautiful Venetian Carousel, which adds to the theme-park feel that the store has aimed to create. The team at Hamleys Prague have worked hard to ensure the store is full of attractions and activities for its visitors, installing a fairy tale style tree house, racing cars which you can drive around the miniature track and even a talking tree! However, the store’s Mirror Maze and Butterfly House are the most popular amongst its customers. The modern Mirror Maze is
where you can gaze at your own reflection, watch motifs alternate on large TV screens and even see your figure be distorted in the hilarious bodychanging mirrors. The Butterfly House, named Papilonia, has an ancient Cambodian temple feel to it and houses a kingdom of over 600 different butterflies, which all fly around freely and even land on your shirt if you’re lucky! This store has recently opened a brand new attraction which will excite those who love all things LEGO. The store has created a LEGO wonderland which showcases famous Czech landmarks, allowing visitors to see iconic buildings from around Prague and the rest of the Czech Republic, including Karlštejn Castle and Villa Tugendhat. This attraction is creative, fun and allows LEGO lovers to see just how much can be created using LEGO cubes. Hamleys Prague also has another exciting attraction lined up. They are currently preparing to launch a unique Virtual Reality experience which Karolína explains will involve customers being “transported to medieval Prague” and that people should “Stay tuned, it’s gonna blow everyone’s mind!”.
attractions for visitors of all ages to enjoy and you can do so by purchasing an ‘attraction’ card which you load credit onto. You are then free to choose whichever attraction you like and can even try them all if you want to. Not to forget though that amongst Hamleys exciting attractions are a gigantic selection of toys, so if you fancy a giant stuffed animal, an action figure or something a little bit different, there really is something for everyone. The store even has members of staff who can demonstrate the toys if you’re not sure how to use them and creative workshops are frequently available to join. Hamleys is fun for all the family, so if you want to be transported to another time, ride on a carousel or even just buy a new toy, Hamleys is a great place to visit whilst in Prague. „I am an itinerant pianist, a man who got married with music. I already played at high school, we used to perform with our band at parties and on balls. We had a lot of fun. So much fun actually, that when I graduated from university, I felt that my desire to go on doing music was stronger than to start a family. And it always remained that way. In 1970 we started going to the West, usually to West Germany, Switzerland or Sweden. I did have girlfriends over there but I made a preventive decision not to commit to a serious relationship. Because I understood that a woman would have had to tolerate my constant music trips, my presence-absence. For a long time I lived 34
in a way that one night we finished a gig in Stuttgart and next night we had a show in Hamburg. And it’s usually not good if a musician travels with a spouse. Because he has to have space for small-talks with guests, for communication with people around. Musicians tend to forget about it. This morning I played in a Prague hotel during breakfasts. It’s a very nice place a you can meet practically the whole world over there. There are people from Asia, from Russia, from Western countries. That was something which I always liked about music – it’s internationality, the fact that you can speak to anyone through it. I speak several languages and I have a repertoire for every

country. I know what people like and I enjoy when they respond to it. It makes me utterly happy when the audience is well-versed in music and requests a lesser known piece. Music is a constant challenge for me – to learn a new piece, to update my repertoaire, to satisfy a new audience. And I do what I feel like doing. Like playing a piano at midnight. A long time ago we played in Prague’s club Alhambra and a waiter told me: ‚You’re going to die on the keyboard one day!‘ I replied: ‚Yeah, that’s fine with me!’“
