Czech garnet…. red as blood, full of secrets, passions and magic. Did you know that the Czech garnet is, among other garnets mined in many locations in the world, as unique as the Colombian emeralds or the Burmese rubies? Garnets also have many legends. For centuries they have been considered as a stone of pilgrims and travelers who wore them as a talisman. According to legend, Noah had a lamp made of a garnet on his ark, which helped him navigate the ship in the evening darkness. It was rumored that glowing night garnets would protect their wearer from evil. In the Middle Ages, the Knights used the garnets not only for decoration, but also for their protective power from injuries, as it gave the warriors a sense of immortality. Another legend claims that tiny crystals of red garnets are fossilized drops of blood of the gods. Garnets symbolize fire, blood, and the heart, making it a favorite gift for wedding anniversaries or romantic gestures. Let yourself be inspired by the beauty of the Czech garnet, get to know its power and strength…. Today, Granát Turnov is the largest producer of jewelry made with unique Czech garnets., including the Czech garnet. It was created by the unification of smaller private companies of goldsmith tradesmen in 1953. In order to ensure the production of jewellery, Granát Turnov obtained an exclusive license to extract Czech garnets and became the owner of the mines which extract the raw garnet material. The original Czech garnet jewellery, made by the traditional manufacturer Granát, d.u.v. Turnov, is seen as one of the symbols of the Czech Republic. It is not only popular in our country, but sought after by foreign tourists, who take it as an exceptional souvenir.
There’s only one true Czech Garnet...Granát Turnov The cooperative is the owner of the trademark and of origin "Czech Garnet" and "Czech Garnet Jewellery". The Garnet team is registered with the hallmark and guarantees the authenticity of the precious metals and stones used. Each Ceramic Garnet comes with a Certificate of Gems and, together with the G-brand Gemstone, guarantees stone foundations and jewellery. Today's collection features a plethora of classical models that have been expanded over the last few years to modern jewellery design. This combination of Czech garnet and moldavin is very popular and this collection includes men's jewellery, children’s jewellery and also symbolic jewellery, such as crosses, hearts, stars, moon signs, letters and animals. We also offer a collection of ladies silver watches, gift items, glass and jewellery, all made from Czech garnet.

HEllo,2018! Happy New Year! We'll keep our editor's letter short and sweet this month, since we're still technically still enjoying our holiday. We just wanted to tell you a few things about our magazine in case it's your first time picking it up. Our idea was simple - to create a publication that is something we would want to pick up if we visited a city for the first time. Something the locals would recommend as a resource, and something that reflected the community and culture instead of the normal touristic garbage you often find out there.

The recommendations we give in this magazine are not paid. The restaurants, bars, clubs and events are carefully curated to reflect what we feel is the best that Prague has to offer. And, that's who we approach to advertise in the magazine. In fact, none one of the businesses who advertise in this magazine rate below a 4.5 on TripAdvisor and that's not a coincidence - it's a requirement (and yes, we do turn away advertisers from time to time). We first met Janek and Honza from Honest Guide just a few months after they had started making
videos and we had started making the magazine. From the very start, we loved what they stood for. Being the "Honest Guide" isn't just about telling people how great your city is, but also protecting visitors by showing them the traps to watch out for as well. We hope you enjoy your time in Prague and you enjoy our magazine. And if you haven't already, be sure and visit Honest Guide on Youtube or Stream.cz for a binge-watching session and crash course on getting the most out of your time in Prague.

The Trojan War-Part 1: An Iliad Wednesday, January 24 Prague Shakespeare Company performs in English in association with the National Theatre at the historic Estates Theater and friends at Main Street Theater Company and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The story of the Trojan War, as told in the Iliad, is the foundational epic of Western civilization. For centuries the triumphs and struggles of Helen, Achilles, Hecuba, Odysseus and the heroes and heroines of the Bronze Age have inspired, shocked and warned us of the horrors of war and the consequences of destructive human behavior. This timeless tale, perhaps now more relevant than ever, is told over three unique theatrical experiences: An Iliad, Troilus and Cressida and The Trojan Women. Depeche Mode
It's been a while since we've heard from Epic and Shifty Shellshock, aka Crazy Town, but we're curious to see if they still live up to what they once were back in the "Butterfly" and Gift of the Game day. They'll be joined by For The Win, another great California band.
First we don't hear from Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, and Andy Fletcher for years - then they show up twice in Prague in a twelve month period as part of their Global Spirit Tour. The last time they were in town was an epic show, with the band belting out all of our old favourites as well as some new stuff. If you missed them last time, here's your chance.

HONEST GUIDE How two guys and a camera are making Prague a better place, one viral video at a time Prague’s Honest Guide started with a simple trip from the airport in 2016. Janek Rubeš and Honza Mikulka thought it might be helpful to make a video for tourists arriving in Prague to answer the eternal question of how to affordably get from your arrival gate to the city centre using public transportation. With it’s success, Rubeš, who is the talent and Mikulka, cameraman and director, began to create additional videos for their employer Stream.cz, like “50 Things to Do in Prague” and a “Guide to Visiting Prague Castle”, but it wasn’t until the pair began creating content exposing and warning visitors of the traps and pitfalls that face tourists in Prague that things really took off. Rubeš was already somewhat already locally famous for exposing a small group of rogue taxi drivers ripping off tourists web series called “Prague Vs. Crooks”. Rubeš uses his nearly perfect English to “play possum” and allow himself to get charged insanely high fares before revealing he’s a local and confronting the drivers (Editor’s note: watch it on Stream.cz, it’s brilliant). So, when the pair received complaints about Cheque Point in Old Town Square, a currency exchange chain infamous for allegedly charging high exchange rates to unsuspecting tourists, they knew they had a job to do. “It’s a nice looking storefront in a great location – somewhere you think there’s no way you would get ripped off. This isn’t on some back street or hidden in some seedy alley way – this is happening right here, steps from the Astronomical Clock,” Rubeš says. On a cold winter day in 2016, the pair stood for hours outside the currency exchange, filming and warning hundreds of would-be customers of the scam and instead handing them flyers with alternative places to exchange. The video garnered international attention, rising up social media sites and gaining millions of views. Since then, two Cheque Point venues, including one in Wenceslas Square, have now shut down, which Mikulka says shows the power of social media. “Look, these guys have a right to make a profit – no one is saying they don’t. Like, with a cup of coffee, you’re not just paying for the coffee – you’re paying for the rent, the barista, all the overhead. But, it would be crazy if a coffee shop just took advantage of the customer and charged them fifty euros for a cappuccino and said it’s morally okay as long as they can trick them into paying it. It’s wrong and that’s exactly what these guys are doing with currency exchange. ” Mikulka says. Asked if their vigilante fight to protect tourists is somewhat like Batman, Rubeš points to Mikulka and laughingly says “Honza would totally be Robin, but as Batman, I’m definitely not Bruce Wayne rich.”
Honest Guide's Janek Rubeš and Honza Mikulka One of the dynamic duo’s latest action videos features the pair stumbling upon a popular exchange street scam where strangers approach tourists offering amazing rates (often with a spectacular story of why they need to dump their Czech currency). The tourist isn’t given Czech currency but often Belarusian Rubles (worthless by comparison). When Mikulka and Rubeš see a tourist falling for the scam mid-transaction while filming another segment, they confront the conman and give chase before the police ultimately show up. And although the tourist was saved from losing several hundred Euros, other less fortunate begin returning to the scene of the crime hoping to get their money back from the thief. Frustratingly, Rubeš says – even when caught or detained, the con-men almost always will return to the same spot the very next day. When asked if the focus of their videos has shifted from their earlier videos, Mikulka says “I would say so. It has shifted a lot, our mindset has changed and our minds are opened to exposing the common scams, not just the perfect, happy stuff.” Rubeš interjects that even though this is the case, their videos are “still 90% positive”, as they still show tourists the best of what the Czech Republic has to offer, not just the scams. Even with the presence of scams, tourism in the Czech Republic continues to flourish, with just over seven million people visiting Prague in 2016, based on statistics from the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ). Rubeš explains he believes their videos don’t stop
people from visiting the Czech Republic and believe they’ve had the opposite effect, as “tourists get involved” with the work they do - and knowledge becomes power. He continues that tourists “send selfies in front of the infamous Old Town exchange place with smiles on their faces”, telling the pair stories of how “they helped other tourists” from getting scammed. Rubeš states that it makes them “happy when people tell us we’re doing a good job on the street”, and with tourists now helping other tourists through the advice given in the Honest Guide videos, this shows the impact that the duo has had. The popularity of the pair has continued to grow and so has the impact of their videos. Mikulka believes that “building trust” plays a big part in this. He explains that through “building personality with Janek as the honest guide”, people “know him, like him, will watch his videos and follow his steps”. Mikulka’s belief that it’s “not possible to build a YouTube channel without personality” gives an insight into why their videos are so popular, and why their channel continues to grow. Czech media seems to agree, naming Rubeš as Personality of the Year at the prestigious Křišťálová Lupa Awards last November. So what’s next for Honest Guide? “We still have a lot of great stuff to share about Prague ahead,” Rubeš says, “showing visitors the great stuff, and even exposing the occasional scams.” You can find all of Honest Guide's videos online at www.stream.cz or on YouTube.

We are the first fear house in Central Europe. Do you like horror stories and adrenalin? We are here for you. This scary tour of our underground space of more than 500 m2 will give you an unforgettable experience full of suspense. Come alone or with your friends or colleagues. The Fear House also has a horror bar where you can enjoy frighteningly good signature drinks, burgers, wings and more.

.
First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.
Public Transport Tips:
Tram and Metro Map Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.

Cocktail
of the month FX PORNSTAR During their long history, there's been plenty of famous people who have enjoyed a night in the legendary Radost FX club & restaurant. One of them was a famous porn actress. This girl absolutely loved a drink which was one of Radost's exclusive drink menu. Even though the drink originally had a different name, Radost decided to give this bittersweet ecstasy a more suitable title in her honor. Served in a nice round alchemist-like bottle, placed in the small iron bucket full of ice with a sweet mix of Absolut Vanilla, mango juice, lychee liqueur, passion fruit puree, combined with a glass of prosecco. This combination takes this drink to whole different level!

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | January 2018
COCKTAIL GUIDE
The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Tretter's
V kolkovne 3, Praha 1
www.tretters.cz
The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. Number 82 on the map. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations
Parlour Krakovská 15, Praha 1 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. Number 84 on the map. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations. L'Fleur V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Muchainspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. Number 94 on the map. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Anonymous Bar Michalská 12, Praha 1 www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm. Number 93 on the map. +420 608 280 069 for Reservations. Le Valmont
Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1
www.levalmont.cz Le Valmont is a newcomer, just opened in Spring 2016. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Just take note of the strict dress code at Le Valmont—no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandals. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly. Number 90 on the map. +420 224 267 266 for Reservations.
Black Angel's Staroměstské nám. 29, Praha 1 www.blackangels.cz Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations. Bar and Books
Manesova 64, Praha 2
and Týnská 19, Praha 1 Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings,
and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). Number 85 and 86 on the map.
they do serve amazing hot dogs. Number 89 on the map. No Reservations.
Bonvivant's CTC Bartolomějská 305, P1
Oblaca Žižkov Television Tower, Praha 3
Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. +420 775 331 862 for Reservations.
Bugsy's
Pařížská 1068/10, Praha 1 www.bugsysbar.cz Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum. Number 95 on the map. +420 224 810 287 For Reservations.
Hemingway's
Karolíny Světlé 26, Praha 1 www.hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended. Number 97 on the map. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
Cash Only Bar Liliova 3, Prague 1 www.cashonlybar.cz Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it—the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way,
www.oblaca.cz
High atop the Žižkov Television Tower, Oblaca is making better cocktails through science. Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). 92 on the map. + 420 210 320 086 for Reservations.
La Bodeguita del Medio Kaprova 19/5, Praha 1
www.labodeguitadelmedio.cz With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. There's a live Cuban band several nights of the week and an amazing cigar selection as well (La Bodeguita was one of the first cigar bars in Prague). . Number 97 on the map. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations.
Alchemist Bar Provaznická 1, Praha 1
www.thealchemistbar.cz A relative newcomer on the scene, Achemist is turning out quality prohibition style drinks in their ornate classicly decorated location at the bottom of Wenclases Square. Number 98 on the map. +420 251 510 940 for Reservations.
Crazy Daisy Václavské nám. 4, Praha 1
www.crazydaisy.cz Somewhat hidden at the bottom of Wenceslas Square, this one of our favourite new hotspots. First republic style interior, bar staff dressed the part and videomapping on the walls that pushes reality - it feels like you're in The Great Gatsby. Oh, and the drinks - amazing! Number 99 on the map. +420 273 130 486 for Reservations.
CLUB GUIDE Roxy Dlouhá 33, Prague 1
The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and bestknown clubs. The venue was a popular theatre and ballroom in the 1920’s, but now you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and other modern styles on the dancefloor. When the club isn’t hosting a live DJ, it’s the spot for concerts and music festivals.
Lucerna
Vodičkova 36
One of the largest and most popular music clubs in Prague, Lucerna is known for its weekly concerts and events. But it’s maybe most popular on Friday and Saturday nights, when the club’s huge projection screens come alive with 80’s and 90’s music videos. Partygoers of every age and all walks of life can be seen here, getting down to oldie hits from Blondie to Nirvana. Number 66 on the map.
Cross Club
Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz
Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dancefloors pumping music from dubstep and techno to reggae. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building, from the walls to the ceiling, is constructed to move and pulsate with the music. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha, but you might want to grab an Uber. Cross Club is a bit out of the city’s center, but worth the trek. Number 67 on the map.
Meet Factory
Ke Sklárně 3213/15 www.meetfactory.cz
This music club, art gallery, theater and cinema is the brainchild of David Černý, the artist responsible for some of Prague’s most famous (and controversial) modern art. A refurbished warehouse stuffed between a motorway and railroad tracks in Smíchov, Meet Factory transforms
by night into a hip bar and music venue, where you’ll find local singers and international tours alike. Number 68 on the map.
M1 Lounge Masná 1, Prague 1 www.m1lounge.com
M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and even passing-through celebrities, and it’s not hard to see why. The club’s well-known team of skilled DJs keep the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music until the wee hours of morning, and the upscale, luxurious atmosphere makes every night feel like a celebration. Number 69 on the map.
James Dean V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/
Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel turned nightclub late night. Number 70 on the map.
NEONE
Bubenská 1 www.lunchmeat.cz/
Neone got its start as a pop-up party, but it’s since grown into a well-established and respected club in Prague’s electronic music scene known for their superior sound system and live gigs. Electronic music fans, this is the spot where the latest trends in the industry meet innovative artists and dedicated fans. Number 72 on the map.
Radost FX radostfx.cz
Bělehradská 120, Prague 2
First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even
filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, wellknown as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague. Number 73 on the map.
Retro
Francouzská 75/4, Prague 2 www.retropraha.cz
One for the curious bored or brave. Retro has become the Czech home of hard house. Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while go-go dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring. Number 75 on the map.
Chapeau Rouge
Jakubska 2, Old Town www.chapeaurouge.cz
Chapeau Rouge is a music clubs that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Chapeau truly has something for everyone! You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Number 77 on the map.
U Sudů
Vodičkova 10, Prague 1 www.usudu.cz
U Sudu is the best of both worlds with a wine bar upstairs and an underground, cave-like labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest
places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic. Number 78 on the map.
Harley's
Dlouhá 18, 110 00 , Prague 1
Harleys is described as the coolest hell on earth. This American-style biker bar opens late and is always rockin’ and rollin’ with live DJs and music acts. It’s also in a perfect location, just a twominute walk from Old Town Square. Number 79 on the map.
La Loca
Odborů 278/4, Prague 2
Chic, fashionable and a whole lotta fun! One of the very first smoke-free establishments in Prague entertains the crowds all day every day. The night is the time when true party colours of La Loca show. International vibes mixed with a scrumptious selection of sizzling drinks are a guarantee of a big night-out. Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you'll very likely to create memories to remember for a lifetime.
Café 80's 8)
You can't go wrong with 80's music. Whether you're nostaligic or just appreciative of all things "totally awesome", the two-story venue does features an 80's themed café restaurant on the first floor. But, the real story here is the basement. A nicely sized music club with an illuminated dance floor, plus a large bar and VIP lounge make it a night worthy of the MTV generation. Number 80 on the map.

[ THE PERFECT DAY ]
Brian stewart FROM appearing IN "THE OFFICE" TO WALKING THE STREETS OF PRAGUE
If you’re a die-hard fan of the British television show The Office, you might recognize Brian Stewart as Ben, one of the diligent office workers at fictional paper company Wernham Hogg on the show’s two seasons and subsequent Christmas specials. After The Office, Stewart found his way to Prague, where he went from working with one of the UK’s greatest comedy teams of Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant, to co-translating the work of two of the Czech Republic’s greatest comedy teams of Zdeněk Svěrák and the late Ladislav Smoljak. Svěrák and Smoljak created Jara Cimrman, a fictional Czech philosopher, poet, inventor and playwright, who penned several plays (yes, it’s a bit confusing). The works of Jara Cimrman are a staple of Czech comedy, and were previously thought untranslatable. Stewart along with co-translator Emilia Machalová and the help of Svěrák daughter Hanka Jelínková acting as Script Editor, were able to bring what’s been called the Czech version of Monty Python to life in English. This lead to the creation of Cimrman English Theater, which performs sell out shows monthly in the Zizkovske Divadlo. Stewart also created Eesk Theatre Company, which just completed it’s second successful run of a play written by Stewart, Castro’s Beard and will soon begin it’s second production, The Regina Monologues. And if this isn’t enough to keep Stewart busy, he also spends his days in a bit of “real world theatre” as he describes it, as a tour guide, showing visitors to Prague the history and hidden places of the city he’s fallen in love with. What would be the first thing you would do on your perfect day in Prague? My first morning stop is normally Kavárna Mezi Řádky (which translates to "between the lines") for my morning coffee. It's a very lovely atmosphere – the café is lined with hundreds if not thousands of books in Czech and English and you can also arrange to borrow the books. The café employs staff with minor disabilities as well, which I like because I think it's a quite socially responsible thing to do. Where to from there? It may sound a bit cliché, but I love a good wander. As a tour guide, I'm always trying to improve my knowledge of Prague’s rich history. I might take in something I’ve not seen for a while - like the Museum of Communism which moved recently, or something completely new. Or I may just walk and stumble upon things. The great thing about Prague is there is amazing public art and exhibits that pop up in places like Wenceslas Square and they're often in English and in Czech. I'm fascinated by history, so this city is a wonderland for me and I never get bored.
Where to next?
And a late dinner?
I might catch a film in one of Prague's cozy old theatres, perhaps Kino Světozor. I love the atmosphere and nostalgic feel. I mean, if you're going to see something like Star Wars, obviously you want to go somewhere with all of the state-ofthe-art bells and whistles - but I simply adore these old film houses like Kino Světozor, and the films are great - many in English or with English subtitles. And, like a lot of old theatres - there's a nice little café and bar connected to it.
I would defintely head to U Kříže restaurant. It's one of my favourites, and they have everything... atmosphere, friendly staff, nice wines, and great food. My favourite dish is this lovely chicken breast with goats cheese, spinach and walnuts.
It's late afternoon, what's the plan?
Kino Světozor
I would probably grab a glass of wine and maybe some nibbles at Bokovka Wine Club and Shop on Dlouhá. I love a nice red and this is one of my favourite places to find it. I love their location as well, which they describe as a half-forgotten courtyard - but I think it's quite picturesque and a hidden gem, and it's a beautiful setting to enjoy a bit of vino with cheese. We're guessing you'd take in theatre next? How did you know? I'd probably take in some Cimrman English Theatre next, although that's probably difficult to do since I'm often in it. But, there is lots of English theatre in Prague, and lots of places doing surtitles - including The National Theatre starting this year. So, I'd certaintly catch a show or two on my perfect day.

In May 2014 Stefano Carini went to Iraq to work as a photo editor with the first and only independent Iraqi photo agency. One month after his arrival, on June 10th, the city of Mosul fell into the hands of ISIS (the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria). In The Woman, the Moon, the Snake, Carini’s own images convey his personal encounter with a land permanently entangled with war where people cling to the simple desire for peace, love and “normality”. screen magic inside the world of special effects at the karel Zeman museum By Helen Johnson
Renowned for his innovative use of special effects, Czech film director Karel Zeman is a pioneer of 20th Century film. Zeman’s films were a popular part of many people’s childhood and routinely shown on television each Christmas, until they suddenly stopped being televised in 1989. In 2012, Ondřej Beránek, Jakub Fabel and Marcel Kral decided that the innovative work of Karel Zeman needed to be showcased to the world and after meeting with Zeman’s daughter, Ludmila, they decided to open the Karel Zeman Museum in Prague. The planning of this creative museum began at the start of 2012, and after around six months of preparing the project purely on paper, it began to be built in June of the same year. After three the Karel Zeman Museum, located just beneath Charles Bridge, opened in October 2012 and has had more than 250,000 visitors through its doors. Ondřej Beránek explains that not only was it quite difficult to plan how to present Zeman’s films in this exhibition, but that they also wanted to make sure the museum reflected the playful fantasy aspect of Zeman’s work. They decided to place multiple television screens playing Zeman’s films throughout the museum in order to do this and allow visitors to engage with Zeman’s work. Also broadcasted on these screens is the Film Adventurer Karel Zeman documentary, which features famous film director Tim Burton, speaking about how Zeman was a big inspiration behind his own work. Visitors are taken on a journey of Zeman’s life and work through five different rooms in this exhibition, which not only show how Zeman came to be a filmmaker, but the innovative special effects he used in his films. Zeman’s most famous films, such as Journey to the Beginning of Time, The Fabulous World of Jules Verne and The Fabulous Baron Munchausen, are shown in this museum and offer an insight into his combined use of both animation and real-life actors. The main special effects Zeman uses in these three films are broken down and explained in this exhibition, with wall text explaining what each effect is and television screens showing particular scenes from Zeman’s films in which these effects are used. The most recent part of this exhibition is a room dedicated to The Fabulous Baron Munchausen film, which was added last October in celebration of the museum’s five year anniversary. This particular part of the museum was first exhibited in Jerusalem and after being received with great success it was permanently installed in the museum in Prague. This room features an interactive, fantasy element
and provides a great photo-taking opportunity. An image of a winged-horse is divided into two cardboard cut-outs and whilst one person sits on the back of the horse, another person has to carefully choosing the correct angle, in order for the two pieces to connect and for the photograph to look like the visitor is riding the mystical creature! This is only one of many interactive elements within the museum, and allows visitors to get involved and fully engage with the creativeness of Zeman’s films. The museum also features a dinosaur bike machine, which when visitors sit on and pedal, the large wings behind the bike move, the wind machine begins and it creates the effect of a flying machine. The museum also showcases original scripts and accompanying illustrations from Zeman’s films, allowing visitors to see the thought process behind Zeman’s creations. Original costumes used in Zeman’s films are also out on display throughout the museum, and unlike many other museums, these costumes are not enclosed within glass cases. This allows visitors to feel fully involved with the items on display and see the costumes up close and in detail.
The Karel Zeman project is now not only contained within the museum building, as there is a ‘trick scene’ at Prague Zoo where visitors can take photos with a flying Dinosaur from the Journey to the Beginning of Time film, and there are further plans to create similar scenes throughout the city. Visitors to the museum can even leave via boat, which is a creative and original experience and ties in with the whole theme of the museum. Zeman’s films are still intensely popular today, and Ondřej Beránek believes that the reason Zeman’s work has been “kept alive universally” is because they’re not just fantasy films, but have a “deeper meaning and important content”. The Karel Zeman museum not only allows visitors to explore this ‘deeper meaning’, but also to become a part of and discover the creative mind, inventive illusions and the innovative world of Karel Zeman. „I did a half-year long exchange stay in Thailand during my studies. I still love to think back about this time. When I finished with the school we traveled with a group of friends at first, then I traveled with one of my friends and then I decided that I would like to travel on my own. I traveled around Laos for fourteen days and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. When you’re a solo traveler, you keep meeting new people. Both locals and other travelers. I met a lot of really interesting people – a girl from Egypt who fights for women rights and who makes a living by writing travel articles, another girl who used to work in Hollywood on many block34
busters or a young Korean girl who made me realize that it was just my prejudice to think that such a girl has to be quiet and timid. I even met girls who had already been travelling for two years. I found it really brave. I thought that I had probably been too scared about different things, that I shouldn’t have. The thing is that when I’m scared of something, I always envison the worse possible scenarios. And so before I set off on the journey, I imagined how someone would rob me or did some harm to me. A lot of people told me: ‚No, don’t go, it’s dangerous. If you were a boy, it would be different.‘ But then a female friend of mine said: ‚Just go! It will be great!’“

„I think that a girl who travels on her own has to be cautious at all times, especially when she goes out at night. But other than that I saw that it’s not necessarily all that different nowadays, to travel on your own as a guy and as a girl. At least in the region that I visited. And I even met women in their fifties or sixties who already had grown-up children and who had left their job to travel Asia for half a year. I found it amazing. I thought: When I’ll be their age, I’ll try to be like them – I will keep discovering new things, I won’t watch TV, I won’t just sit at home.“
