THE PRAGUE VISITOR | MAY 2018
We love may. May 1 is the “Day of Love” here in the Czech Republic – but it’s the month of love for us. First off, the weather is warm, the flowers are in bloom and we put down our pint glasses long enough to enjoy wine - our second favorite Czech adult beverage (we took slivovice off our list for reasons we can’t explain here). This month, we’ll tell you about some of our favorite wine events around Prague, including “Pink May” which celebrates rosé wines on the beautiful Naplavka riverfront. We’re also tickled pink it’s time for The Prague Fringe Festival again. The English language theater festival is in its 17th year here in Prague, and we loved

it so much last year we became a partner. Bringing world-class talent to small and intimate venues around Mala Strana, it’s your chance to see some truly incredible talent performing theatre, cabaret, comedy and more over a nine day period (May 25 – June 2). And it’s affordable – meaning once you get indoctrinated into the fun of Fringe, you can afford to go to as many of the 255 performances of the 55 shows in 9 venues as your time will allow. Besides these activities, there’s lots of other events as well – if you’re the shopping type, Fashion Arena Prague Outlet is hosting Travel Week, which means deep discounts on top of the already good
prices on some of your favorite brands. And if that’s not enough, we’ve also put in 400 or so events in our Night and Day Calendar – so you’re sure to find something. Remember, you can always check us out online at www.praguevisitor.eu, or like us on Facebook, where you can chat with Golem, our artificial intelligence chatbot who can tell you all things Prague, and don’t forget to tag us in your Instagram photos and we may even repost your photo. Enjoy Prague, and we’ll see you next month!

Bobby mcferrin
Wednesday, May 9, 20:00 Late 80's hit "Don't Worry, Be Happy" is still a great catchy fun message - especially in today's world, but Bobby McFerrin has moved far beyond it these days. The ten-time Grammy Award winner is known for his unique vocal techniques, such as singing fluidly but with quick and considerable jumps in pitch—for example, sustaining a melody while also rapidly alternating with arpeggios and harmonies—as well as scat singing, polyphonic overtone singing, and improvisational vocal percussion. McFerrin leaves audience amazed with his musical ability, and at 68 years old, he shows no signs of letting up. Forum Karlin Pernerova 53

Fringe festivals find their roots in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1947. A small, bold group of theatre companies decided to crash the Edinburgh International Festival and perform on the 'fringe' of the programme. These artists were driven to build a community where all types of audiences and performers were welcome. This spirit remains at the heart of the worldwide Fringe community today. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe has grown from those eight initial companies to thousands of performances over a three-week period and now it’s gone global. There are Fringe festivals from Perth, Australia to Paris, France; from Bergen, Norway to Brighton, England. Prague joined the landscape in 2002, with this year marking the 17th annual Prague Fringe Festival.

Forman's legacy "I think everyone dreamt somehow to make a film in
hollwood." - MILOS FORMAN
Milos Forman was more than your average filmmaker; he was an Oscar-winning director and the mastermind behind Amadeus, The People vs. Larry Flynt, and Man on the Moon. Forman died on April 13th at age 86, leaving behind scores of work and success that will go unchallenged for years to come. Born and raised in the former Czechoslovakia, Forman began his career as an actor, artist, and filmmaker at a young age. In his earliest years, Forman worked to develop content during the Czechoslovak New Wave, which was an artistic cinematic movement for the Czech film making industry during the 1960’s. His work was successful, but Forman decided to leave what he had done for Czech cinema behind and give Hollywood a shot. In 1968, Forman moved to the United States. Here, he made a name for himself in the American cinematic world. His dream of becoming a Hollywood filmmaker wouldn’t immediately come true. American filmmakers quickly rejected his earliest suggestions, such as an adaptation of Franz Kafka’s Amerika. Even though fame in the United States wouldn’t come easy, it’s clear that Forman eventually found his way. Masterpiece after masterpiece, Forman distinguished himself by directing some of the most iconic American films. His portfolio includes, but isn’t limited to, the famous Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. His work was recognized as some of the best cinematography in Hollywood at the time, and Forman won two Best Director Oscars
for both Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. His success radiated throughout America; One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest become only the second film to win all five Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor). Additionally, Amadeus (which you were probably told to watch in music class at some point in your life) won a total of eight Oscars. What distinguishes Forman from other filmmakers was his ability to make his work personal. His life in Czechoslovakia was extremely formative for him, and his work reflected this. Forman felt One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was symbolic of his life, considering he lived in Czechoslovakia during its communist regime. Forman told the Directors Guild of America in 2013, “I explained I wanted to make the film because to me it was not just literature but real life, the life I lived in Czechoslovakia from my birth in 1932 until 1968.” When Forman left Czechoslovakia, he had not planned on returning. However, when the production of Amadeus began, he decided he needed to go back. Prior to his return, the last time Forman had been home was the tail end of the Prague Spring movement in 1968. Forman expressed that returning was unsettling for him, but he returned for the sake of the film. The Czech’s welcomed him with chants of victory and cheer, and the film Amadeus was a huge success. Forman was not only an influential and groundbreaking director, but he was also loved man. With the tragic loss of both parents in a
concentration camp when he was 9, Forman made up for the lost love through his relationship with his wives and with all of the people of whom he worked with in Hollywood. Forman was married three separate times, but it is said that he remained close with all of his former spouses. Additionally, he had four children, all of whom he was close with. Anyone who worked with Forman loved him, and Michael Douglas told Rolling Stone magazine, “we just lost one of the greatest directors in the history of film. I cherish everything he taught me. My family sends their deepest sympathies to Martine and their children.” After news of his death spread, Twitter exploded with tweets in remembrance of the cinematic icon. Jim Carey (who starred in the Forman directed film "Man on the Moon" tweeted: "Another great one passes through the doorway. Milos Forman. What a force. A lovely man. I’m glad we got to play together. It was a monumental experience.” Clearly, Milos Forman left his mark not only in the Czech Republic, but all over the world. His incredible directing skills have left behind a legacy of talent and meaning. The films he leaves the world with will remain timeless classics will be well renowned for years to come. Cocktail guide The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Tretter's
V kolkovne 3, Praha 1 www.tretters.cz The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. Number 82 on the map. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations
Parlour
Krakovská 15, Praha 1 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. Number 84 on the map. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations.
L'Fleur
V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. Number 94 on the map. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Anonymous Bar
Michalská 12, Praha 1 www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm. Number 93 on the map. +420 608 280 069 for Reservations.
Le Valmont
Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1 www.levalmont.cz The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly. Number 90 on the map. +420 224 267 266 for Reservations.
Black Angel's
Staroměstské nám. 29, Praha 1 www.blackangels.cz Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations.
Bar and Books
Manesova 64, Praha 2 and Týnská 19, Praha 1 Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). Number 85 and 86 on the map.
Bonvivant's CTC
Bartolomějská 305, P1 Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. +420 775 331 862 for Reservations.
Bugsy's
Pařížská 1068/10, Praha 1 www.bugsysbar.cz Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum. Number 95 on the map. +420 224 810 287 For Reservations.
Hemingway's
Alchemist Bar
Karolíny Světlé 26, Praha 1
Provaznická 1, Praha 1
www.hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended. Number 97 on the map. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
www.thealchemistbar.cz A relative newcomer on the scene, Achemist is turning out quality prohibition style drinks in their ornate classicly decorated location at the bottom of Wenclases Square. Number 98 on the map. +420 251 510 940 for Reservations.
Cash Only Bar Liliova 3, Prague 1
www.cashonlybar.cz Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it—the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs. Number 89 on the map. No Reservations.
Crazy Daisy
Václavské nám. 4, Praha 1 www.crazydaisy.cz Somewhat hidden at the bottom of Wenceslas Square, this one of our favourite new hotspots. First republic style interior, bar staff dressed the part and videomapping on the walls that pushes reality - it feels like you're in The Great Gatsby. !Number 99 on the map. +420 273 130 486 for Reservations.
Oblaca
Žižkov Television Tower, Praha 3 www.oblaca.cz High atop the Žižkov Television Tower, Oblaca is making better cocktails through science. Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). 92 on the map. + 420 210 320 086
La Bodeguita del Medio Kaprova 19/5, Praha 1
www.labodeguitadelmedio.cz With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. Number 97 on the map. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations.

First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.
Public Transport Tips:
Tram and Metro Map Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.

With two violins, two violas, and two cellos, it is a unique permanent chamber ensemble both in the Czech Republic and worldwide. The motivation for forming a sextet was not only its interesting sound, richer in comparison with a string quartet, but also the wonderful works by the great masters that tend to be performed only sporadically because of this unusual instrumentation. 200 to 1000 CZK Antonín dvořák, Czech

For the first time, insitu collective will present an exhibition in Prague and introduce their unique curatorial perspective in a group show of five emerging international artists: Christian Falsnaes, Isabella Fürnkäs, Andy Kassier, Basim Magdy, Pia Sirén, Marianne Vlaschits, Anna Witt . After their successful participation at Aarhus 2017 – European Capital of Culture, this will be the second large-scale institutional exhibition for the Berlin-based curatorial team. The exhibition _”Fake it till you make it”_ focuses on the topic of so-called _“self-help”_ books. The exhibition presents three chapters which focus on the core themes of those books: _“Be a winner”_, _“Be religious about your workout”_ and _“Take a deep breath”_. It hardly comes as a surprise that in times of a complete persistence of communication due to constant accessibility and sounding through the (social) media, one can fall back on so-called self-help books. With their works – partially commissioned – the artists respond to their own idea of what is helpful as experience or knowledge in order to increase well-being or a healthy position within society. On the one hand, the artworks reflect a shiny and glamorous vision of reality, and on the other, they reveal the behind-thescenes of a number of these books and their pseudophilosophies, at times dubious or even absurd. The
exhibition will mirror existing trends in self-help books such as the introduction of rituals to your life, establishing forms of self-marketing and positive thinking, or ways of getting out of your comfort zone. *Artists:* Christian Falsnaes, Isabella Fürnkäs, Andy Kassier, Basim Magdy, Pia Sirén, Marianne Vlaschits, Anna Witt

Our Three Favorite Wine Bars Aside from all of the great festivals and wine events happening in May, there are plenty of wine bars all around the city that can provide those visiting Prague with everything they need for a quality tasting experience. From intimate tasting rooms, to entire three course meals with wine pairings, everyone is sure to find a wine bar perfect for their taste. We selected three of our very favorite, so all you have to do is sit back, relax and try a glass...or three. Nobody is judging. You can find all of these great wine bars on our map in the middle of the magazine.
Veltlin It’s not often that you stumble upon a wine bar that is also run by a winemaker, and specializes in wine from the surrounding area but Veltlin Wine Bar makes both possible. Founded by a winemaker, Veltlin has both the taste and the widest range of natural vino in Prague. With a selection focused on the old Austro-Hungarian Empire (and of course some French and Italian wines) this bar focuses on pairing the wine with the client not pair the client down to the wine. They only select the best wines that they feel are both the most authentic and ecologically conscious. With wine that tastes great, is good for the environment and is reasonably priced you are sure to find the best of the region at Veltlin.
Vinograf Vinograf Wine Bar has three locations in Prague that each offer distinct amenities for their clients. Each location has its own staff of skilled sommeliers who work with each person to curate a wine experience perfect to their own taste. We sat down with one of the co-owners, Zuzana Vesela to talk all things wine and how Vinograf does it better. “The idea is to have a wide range of it so we really like Czech wines and Czech winemakers we think the quality is still growing. Not so many people around the world know about the Czech winemaking they only know about the beer, but we’re trying to tell the world that we also have a lot of wines and a huge region-Moravia that is dedicated to wine,” Zuzana said. Every spring, the Vinograf team visits wineries in the Czech Republic to sample a selection of wines and choose from each vineyard what to stock at their locations. Zuzana said this helps Vinograf establish a great relationship with winemakers and ensures that the wine they sell are products which they themselves enjoy. “We only pick the wines that we actually agreed on and that everyone likes in the team,” Zuzana said. Selling only the select wines they like instead of carrying a vineyards entire stock is what sets Vinograf apart, but also each Vinograf location is different from the other, ensuring that guests have a unique experience at each location. The first location Vinograf Míšeňská Street
is an intimate wine bar focused on Czech wines with about 25 wines by the glass. Visitors can go through and ask the sommelier to prepare a wine flight to each person’s taste as there are no preselected flights. Everything can be customised to the customers taste and preferences. There are appetizers such as cheese and sausage which are all sourced from the Czech Republic. The Míšeňská location is designed to give patrons a true Czech wine experience. The newest location Vinograf Anděl has a modern style perfect for its location in the modern side of Prague. At the Anděl bar, choose from 350 bottles from the Czech Republic and around the world as well as 35 wines by the glass to enjoy. There are also both cold and hot dishes to accompany your wine. The largest Vinograf location is on Senovážné Square where there are over 700 bottles from all over the world including about 150-200 Czech wines. Additionally, there are over 50 wines served by the glass. This location also features wine-friendly lunch and dinner cuisine curated by their in-house chef, and trust us you are going to want to order a dish off of this menu. Vinograf also organizes different special wine events each month, including Riesling Rocks an open-air festival outside of Senovážné Square coming up in June. Mark your calendars for this special event with over 40 rieslings to sample surrounded by the sounds of live music.
U Stare Studny Cafe & Wine Bar Exploring Old Town Prague you might walk right past this 14th century cellar, but if you stop and look you will find the hidden gem that is U Stare Studny Cafe & Wine Bar. Step into this luxurious wine bar and find every kind of unique wine, cognac or champagne to sample with a tasting flight. They offer daily wine tastings, with at least six premium Czech wines to sample by the glass each day in addition to over 40 Moravian wines they carry regularly. Specialty cheese plates and handmade chocolates can accompany your flight and help enhance your tasting experience. This is more than just a wine bar, this is an entire experience not to be missed. regional wines we're drinking (Not all in one night)
Don’t get us wrong – we’re not all sophisticated wine drinkers at The Prague Visitor. Half of our staff thinks wine is divided into categories including twist off, boxed and “fancy with a cork”. Luckily for us, our friends at three of the best wine bars have helped us get educated. Their wine experts chose twelve bottles of which we’ve voluntarily sampled (for the sake of research). And don’t worry – professionals were on hand…we took along a sommelier who provided notes on each of these lovely offerings which range between 3€ and 6€ per glass. Enjoy!

“A few years back I got used to going to a flea market in Kolbenka. I’m musician and I found some music instruments there, or I just dug through some interesting artefacts. Once an old and empty notebook popped on me. It had a nice binding, with squared paper sheets inside. Even though from the 1920s, it was was well-preserved. When I brought it home and opened it, I realised I couldn’t write down anything. There was no point in putting in either some silly poetry experiments of mine, or to use it as a diary. The notebook looked as if it was gonna be around for some time so I thought it deserved a more permanent content. A universal piece of information. It lay on a shelf by my computer – I didn’t know what. But then, one day I just took it and spontaneously wrote down: ‘do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti’, the solfa syllabi. Which is a code from the 11th century – I though that one turned out to be quite permanent. At first I wrote it into a row, then into a column, then I start50

ed filling in the arising square. I found it funny and thanks to it I started realising how many various combinations is there and how many I can put down into this notebook. The whole summer I was carrying the notebook with me and wrote in it. I did it in a combinatorial way. The first chapter was ‘Do-Do-Do-Do‘, ‘Do-Do-Do-Re‘, ‘Do-Do-Do-Mi‘ and so on. As in the Rumburak series when the computer looks for magic formulas: ‘Hubero kororo‘. There were various verbal associations and I also found out that I could create diverse graphic motives. Eventually I wrote all over the notebook, one hundred and fifty pages I think. Originally I thought it was going to be an aesthetic thing for me but because I wrote among people, in parks and in pubs, it turned out differently. It was one of those cases when seemingly irrational and nonsense behaviour starts to develop and aim at something on its own. A lot of people peeked over my shoulders and interpreted what they saw – a
geodetist claimed those were coordinates. I found out I ended playing according to it, which attracted other people. Eventually I decided to publish it in print – which meant transcribing everything into excel sheets. I could have created it with a few computer functions but it was interesting to approach it as a manuscript. Including the mistakes which were made in the meantime. So – it worked out well, there were some reviews and accolades, it reached people from the Art Archive and the manuscript was exhibited in DOX as an authorial book. I organised several concerts, for example in the Libeň synagogue. In Hungary where they have syllabi connected to gestures there was a ballet made. I got into a festival of experimental literature in Crakow thanks to it and various literature media started asking me if I had any other texts. So this is how my career of experimental poet started by mistake
