KRTEK Krtek, or The Little Mole, is a Czech national treasure. Since animator Zdenฤ k Miler first released Krtek in 1966, he's been an endearing figure in the lives of Czechs. Most Czech children grew up not just watching the films, but also playing with Krtek toys. You can find Krtek toys in popular toy stores like Hamelys, Sparkys, or even in Manufaktura.
BECHEROVKA Skip the Absenth that probably wasn't even made here and go with this. Becherovkab is a herbal bitters, often drunk as a digestive aid (we aren't sure by whom). It's produced in Karlovy Vary and found pretty much everywhere. Be sure and check for travel restrictions with alcohol.

GRANÁT TURNOV Bohemian garnet is a rare thing indeed. While garnet is a stone found far and wide, the small pebble like garnet is only found in Bohemia. In fact, many producers in places like Russia will take larger stones and break them up to resemble Czech garnet, so don't be fooled. Granát Turnov is the largest, most traditional producer of Czech garnet jewellery. They are also the holder of the "Czech garnet" trademark. Granát Turnov has several resellers around Prague, and an actual showroom at Panská 892/1, 110 00 Nové Město.

BUY LOCAL ART Someone told us once to buy local art on vacation, and it's sound advice. Not only do you end up with something special on your wall, you have a keepsake to remind you of your holiday. You can find them in Old Town, near the InterContinental Hotel. Galerie La Femme Bílkova 131/2, 110 00 Josefov
The Botas 66 is a revived Czechoslavakian era shoe company which began in the 1940s, but really made their footprint in the mid-1960s with colourful affordable shoes. Today, they've brought back the spirit of those original shoes, which makes the hipster crowd's hearts flutter. Orange wine, biodynamic wine, lowintervention, if it’s not good, who cares? Fortunately the Veltlin Wine Bar has both taste and the widest range of natural vino in Prague. With a selection focused on the old AustroHungarian Empire (and a smattering of French and Italian besides), one could end up drinking like a Moravian hippie or a certain empress on her wedding night. Friendly staff will try to pair the right wine with the client, not pare the client down to the wine. Meats and cheeses from small Czech producers are available to quiet small hungers. BLUE ONION PORCELAIN There's a long complicated story on Czech's history with the Blue Onion patterned porcelain and the original Meissen fatory, but we don't have room to get into it here. The short story is that Czech has a history with the famed porcelain since the mid-1800s. Visit their showroom: Český porcelán, a. s. 110 00 Praha 1, Perlová 1

MANUFAKTURA In 1991, Prague was freshly opened to foreigners from all over the world-looking for traditional Czech things to take home. And so the idea was born, to make use of beautiful spaces in the historical center of Prague and offer tourists the best of the toy and craft tradition of the country, which at the time was threatened with extinction. Manufaktura's owner's went to the Bohemian and Moravian countryside and bought everything from the craftsmen there - from traditional dolls, hand-painted Easter eggs to wooden toys. Gradually, they managed to bring together over 250 small craftsmen, former masters of folk art, tradition holders and smaller Czech companies, whose products they sell today. Our favourite Manufaktura item has to be the beer cosmetics line which taps into the regenerative properties of beer. Manufaktura has several shops across Prague. Visit our map in the center of the magazine for a full listing.
LOCAL ARTISTS - A UNIQUE GIFT SHOP Karmelitská 26, 110 00, Praha 1
Souvenirs should tell a story - that's what the staff at Local Artists think. Together, they have curated a collection of thoughtful gift boxes which contain a variety of Czech goods. Local Artist's also sells stand alone items as well, each telling a story. Individual items are available as well, and you can shop online at www.localartists.cz At left is the Generous Box, which is one of our favourite gifts for friends. It retails at 1640CZK 1. GLASS & CRYSTAL If you're going to buy glass or crystal, make sure it's from somewhere reputable (there's lots of Chinese product being sold as Czech to tourists). Our recommednation is to stick with somewhere reputable, like Moser Crystal. But, if you're more daring - for under 1000czk, you can not only buy crystal, but actually see it being made. Prague Bus Tours offers day trips to RÜCKL CRYSTAL glassworks, situated in the picturesque Berounka River valley in Křivoklátsko. You'll learn about the art of making glass, crystal manufacturing an demonstrations of glass blowing and cutting - plus great deals on the merchandise. First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.
Public Transport Tips:
Tram and Metro Map Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | October 2017
COCKTAIL GUIDE The best cocktail bars in Prague( (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Tretter's
V kolkovne 3, Praha 1
www.tretters.cz
The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. Number 82 on the map. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations
Parlour Krakovská 15, Praha 1 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. Number 84 on the map. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations. L'Fleur V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Muchainspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. Number 94 on the map. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Anonymous Bar Michalská 12, Praha 1 www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm. Number 93 on the map. +420 608 280 069 for Reservations. Le Valmont
Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1
www.levalmont.cz Le Valmont is a newcomer, just opened in Spring 2016. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Just take note of the strict dress code at Le Valmont—no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandals. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly. Number 90 on the map. +420 224 267 266 for Reservations.
Black Angel's Staroměstské nám. 29, Praha 1 www.blackangels.cz Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations. Bar and Books
Manesova 64, Praha 2
and Týnská 19, Praha 1 Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings,
and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). Number 85 and 86 on the map.
Bonvivant's CTC P1
Bartolomějská 305,
Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. Incidentally, the “CTC” in the bar’s title actually stands for cocktail tapas café, and it hits the mark on each one, serving some pretty damn tasty dishes and coffee as well. +420 775 331 862 for Reservations.
Bugsy's
Pařížská 1068/10, Praha 1 www.bugsysbar.cz Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum. Number 95 on the map. +420 224 810 287 For Reservations.
Hemingway's
Karolíny Světlé 26, Praha 1 www.hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended. Number 97 on the map. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
Cash Only Bar Liliova 3, Prague 1 www.cashonlybar.cz Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own
name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it—the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs. Number 89 on the map. No Reservations.
Oblaca Žižkov Television Tower, Praha 3
www.oblaca.cz
High atop the Žižkov Television Tower, Oblaca is making better cocktails through science. Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). Števlík deploys molecular mixology in his cocktail designs, exploring the physical and chemical transformations of ingredients that occur when making a cocktail. 92 on the map. + 420 210 320 086 for Reservations.
La Bodeguita del Medio Kaprova 19/5, Praha 1
www.labodeguitadelmedio.cz With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. There's a live Cuban band several nights of the week and an amazing cigar selection as well (La Bodeguita was one of the first cigar bars in Prague). . Number 97 on the map. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations.
Alchemist Bar Provaznická 1, Praha 1
www.thealchemistbar.cz A relative newcomer on the scene, Achemist is turning out quality prohibition style drinks in their ornate classicly decorated location at the bottom of Wenclases Square. Number 98 on the map. +420 251 510 940 for Reservations.
CLUB GUIDE Roxy Dlouhá 33, Prague 1
The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and bestknown clubs. The venue was a popular theatre and ballroom in the 1920’s, but now you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and other modern styles on the dancefloor. When the club isn’t hosting a live DJ, it’s the spot for concerts and music festivals.
Lucerna
Vodičkova 36
One of the largest and most popular music clubs in Prague, Lucerna is known for its weekly concerts and events. But it’s maybe most popular on Friday and Saturday nights, when the club’s huge projection screens come alive with 80’s and 90’s music videos. Partygoers of every age and all walks of life can be seen here, getting down to oldie hits from Blondie to Nirvana. Number 66 on the map.
Cross Club
Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz
Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dancefloors pumping music from dubstep and techno to reggae. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building, from the walls to the ceiling, is constructed to move and pulsate with the music. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha, but you might want to grab an Uber. Cross Club is a bit out of the city’s center, but worth the trek. Number 67 on the map.
Meet Factory
Ke Sklárně 3213/15 www.meetfactory.cz
This music club, art gallery, theater and cinema is the brainchild of David Černý, the artist responsible for some of Prague’s most famous (and controversial) modern art. A refurbished warehouse stuffed between a motorway and railroad tracks in Smíchov, Meet Factory transforms
by night into a hip bar and music venue, where you’ll find local singers and international tours alike. Number 68 on the map.
M1 Lounge Masná 1, Prague 1 www.m1lounge.com
M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and even passing-through celebrities, and it’s not hard to see why. The club’s well-known team of skilled DJs keep the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music until the wee hours of morning, and the upscale, luxurious atmosphere makes every night feel like a celebration. Number 69 on the map.
James Dean V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/
Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel turned nightclub late night. Number 70 on the map.
NEONE
Bubenská 1 www.lunchmeat.cz/
Neone got its start as a pop-up party, but it’s since grown into a well-established and respected club in Prague’s electronic music scene known for their superior sound system and live gigs. Electronic music fans, this is the spot where the latest trends in the industry meet innovative artists and dedicated fans. Number 72 on the map.
Radost FX radostfx.cz
Bělehradská 120, Prague 2
First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even
filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, wellknown as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague. Number 73 on the map.
Retro
Francouzská 75/4, Prague 2 www.retropraha.cz
One for the curious bored or brave. Retro has become the Czech home of hard house. Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while go-go dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring. Number 75 on the map.
Chapeau Rouge
Jakubska 2, Old Town www.chapeaurouge.cz
Chapeau Rouge is a music clubs that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Chapeau truly has something for everyone! You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Number 77 on the map.
U Sudů
Vodičkova 10, Prague 1 www.usudu.cz
U Sudu is the best of both worlds with a wine bar upstairs and an underground, cave-like labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest
places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic. Number 78 on the map.
Harley's
Dlouhá 18, 110 00 , Prague 1
Harleys is described as the coolest hell on earth. This American-style biker bar opens late and is always rockin’ and rollin’ with live DJs and music acts. It’s also in a perfect location, just a twominute walk from Old Town Square. Number 79 on the map.
La Loca
Odborů 278/4, Prague 2
Chic, fashionable and a whole lotta fun! One of the very first smoke-free establishments in Prague entertains the crowds all day every day. The night is the time when true party colours of La Loca show. International vibes mixed with a scrumptious selection of sizzling drinks are a guarantee of a big night-out. Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you'll very likely to create memories to remember for a lifetime.
Café 80's 8)
You can't go wrong with 80's music. Whether you're nostaligic or just appreciative of all things "totally awesome", the two-story venue does features an 80's themed café restaurant on the first floor. But, the real story here is the basement. A nicely sized music club with an illuminated dance floor, plus a large bar and VIP lounge make it a night worthy of the MTV generation. Number 80 on the map.

signal festival light festival returns october 12-15
This month, visitors to Prague will be able to see some of the city’s classic architecture and surroundings in a whole new light. From October 12 -15th, SIGNAL Festival returns for it’s fifth year to 22 locations across Prague. Lighting artists from all over the world and the Czech Republic dazzle festival-goers with “all things light” - from video projection mapping onto historic structures, light installations, 3-D exhibits and more. Last year, the festival had over half a million visitors, and earning a spot as one of 36 festivals in the world not to be missed according to FlightNetwork.com. This year, the festival has taken on the ambitious task of expanding, with the creation of two routes for the festival. The first route leads visitors through the historical centre of the city, with the other outdoor exhibits situated in the region of Vinohrady, primarily in Prague 2 and 3. Visitors will also be able to take part in a great number of accompanying activities such as music concerts, theatre performances and workshops. Festival director Martin Pošta says the expansion makes it difficult to see everything in just one night. “If anyone wish to enjoy the entire festival, we recommend reserving at least two evenings for it. To go along both routes during just one festival evening will hardly be possible,” says Pošta.
In addition to the new locations and a new route, SIGNAL has also added an indoor gallery zone, consisting of four original interior spaces rarely seen by the public. And while the outdoor sections of SIGNAL remain free (although we recommend buying a handy map to find all the locations), the gallery ticket will cost 100czk. And as
in previous years, the video mapping exhibit which requires 3D glasses cost a modest 50 czk. You can also purchase the Signal Festival App on Android and iOS devices by visiting the respective app stores which has all of the relevant maps, info and more. For more information, visit signalfestival. com.
How to see SIGNAL The unique thing about SIGNAL is that it’s not contained to a single geographical area, but instead spread across the city. This makes for a great walking tour of Prague at night. The outdoor installations are free, but it’s highly recommended to buy a map at the starting locations for the festival. These locations are also marked on our map in the center of the magazine.
CITY CENTRE ROUTE STARTING POINT Tyršův dům (Kampa Park) GPS - 50.083324, 14.406475

Exhibitions This month
Lithuanian Film Posters The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
The exhibition presents the most interesting film posters of Lithuania from the collection of the Lithuanian Theater, Music and Film Museum in Vilnius. Visitors will see 43 posters from the period between 1953 and 2010 designed by the prominent Lithuanian affichists – mostly the graduates of the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts from after the 1960s. Regardless of the period censorship, the posters show a specific artistic expression, allegorical importance, which remarkably expands the understanding of the films. Exhibit is opened through Thursday, August 21.
Vladimír Boudník
The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
Presentation of the work of an outstanding Czech graphic artist and painter, a representative of active and structural graphic art, and a ‘Gentle Barbarian’ whose life and work was closely associated with the Libeň and Vysočany quarters of Prague. The works have been lent by Jan Placák’s private collection. Exhibit is opened through Sunday, October 29.
First Scream, First Cry The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
The exhibition brings focus to the history of attendance at birth from the individual care to the foundation of medical delivery institutions in Prague. The greatest accent is put on the period between the 2nd half of the 18th and the 1st half of the 19th centuries because it was a period of cardinal changes in the attitude for providing help to women while giving birth. The exhibition presents a manifold evidence of the midwife and obstetrics professions, from medical instruments and various tools to the traditions of birth giving, legal documents, and some written records. Exhibit is open through Sunday, October 15.
Burial Mound of Libeň The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
In 1890, a grave with a skeleton in an extended position was found in Libeň, in the garden in front of the synagogue on today’s Zenklova Street. In addition to a ceramic jug, there were two extraordinarily long bronze pins – measuring 77 cm – on the skeleton’s chest. Based on these findings, the grave originated in the Middle Bronze Age, in particular in the period of the Middle Danube Tumulus Culture (1550–1300 BC). Exhibit is open through Sunday, October 1.
Prague of Charles IV – A Grandiose Building Site in Europe House at the Golden Týnská 630/6
The first stage of the exhibition at the House at the Golden Ring was launched as part of the celebrations of the 700th birth anniversary of Charles IV. Focusing on urban development in Prague and its changes throughout the 14th century, the display accentuates the rule of Charles IV and the House of Luxembourg.
From a Thread to a Shirt / Medieval Textile Production and Dyeing in Prague House at the Golden Týnská 630/6
Textile and its products were important parts of the everyday life of medieval Prague. The exhibition introduces medieval textile and dyeing crafts during the 14th and 15th centuries. Visitors can find various types of textiles, their practical use for everyday life, and the historic fashion of the inhabitants of the New Town of Prague in the High Middle Ages. A unique collection of a few hundred medieval textile fragments discovered during archaeological research of the dump layers in the centre of Prague is the core of the exhibition. Exhibit is open through Sunday, October 29.
Vanished Podskalí and Life on the Vltava Podskalí Custom House at Výtoň
Rašínovo nábřeží 412 The Podskalí Customs House at Výtoň is the last reminder of old Podskalí. In this Renaissance building with a 16th century timber storey, a toll called ‘výtoň’ (referring to the cut logs from rafts) was collected on timber that was floated to Prague. The life of Podskalí raftsmen, timber traders, sand miners, ice diggers, and others whose life was connected with water is presented through historical photographs and tools used by the Podskalí locals. The next part of the exhibition is dedicated to the history of raft and ship transportation near Prague – visitors will again find historical photographs presented with the help of modern technology. Furthermore, the exhibition shows models of ships and a raft. The exhibition has been designed to also attract children.
Villa Müller, National Cultural Monument Nad Hradním vodojemem 14/642
A world-famous structure of the avant-garde architect Adolf Loos (1870–1933)
Villa Rothmayer, National Cultural Monument U Páté baterie 50, Prague 6
The villa was owned by the architect Otto Rothmayer (1892–1966), a follower and colleague of Josip Plečnik (1872–1957).
Norbertov Study and Documentation Centre
Nad Hradním vodojemem 53/13
The main goal of the Norbertov Study and Documentation Centre of Modern Architecture is to professionally store and process the archive fonds, collections, and other materials directly associated with the Villa Müller and Villa Rothmayer exhibitions and to make them available to the public. The building is simultaneously a repository, library with a research centre, and exhibition area.
Crafts in Guilds / The History of Craftsmen’s Association from the Middle Ages to the Present Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
Introducing the history of crafts and guild association, the permanent exhibition Crafts in Guilds presents one of the world’s largest collections of guild artefacts which is administered by the City of Prague Museum.
Object of the Quarter of a Year: Locksmith Guild Funeral Shield Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
Locksmithing is one of the oldest crafts. Originally, locksmiths were blacksmiths who later specialised in subtler and technically more demanding metalwork. In the 14th century, there were so many of them in Prague that they found their own guild. They also included in their guild similar crafts such as gunsmiths, spur makers, and clockmakers. Funeral shields were raised above the coffin during a cortege and there was always an even number of them. The locksmith’s guild had four shields from 1611, each of them showing specific signs of the particular group of artisans: locksmiths, spur makers, gunsmiths, and clockmakers. The locksmith’s burial shield features crossed keys, two locks, and names of guild members encircling the shield, all bullion-embroidered.
Ctěnice Chateau / History, Building Development and Reconstruction Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
The exhibition presents a long and complex history of the Ctěnice domain from the earliest times to the present. It also attempts to briefly present the overall reconstruction of the compound, which was carried out between 1997 and 2004.
History of Vinoř / From Prehistoric Times to the 20th Century Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
The exhibition, which was devised in cooperation with the Prague-Vinoř Municipal District, presents the history of Vinoř to visitors.
Art Forged in Iron / Blacksmith’s and Locksmith’s Art in the Collections of the City of Prague Museum Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
The City of Prague Museum’s collection of locks and ironwork was established shortly after the museum’s foundation; today it comprises up to 1,350 items. The first part of the blacksmith and locksmith art exhibition presents examples of the locksmith craft. Visitors will learn about the history of locking mechanisms, lock types, and ironwork. The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to the large-sized blacksmith art; the earliest items come from the Baroque era. Emphasis is put on objects which either were made in Prague or connected their ‘life’ with the city. The current works of blacksmith art are situated in Ctěnice Chateau’s exteriors. Various cultural events, vocational school presentations, and workshops will accompany the exhibition. Exhibit open through Sunday, October 1.
Prague-Těšnov Station / Back in Operation Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1, Prague 9
The new permanent exhibition presents an extinct station of Prague as a model railway (HO scale 1:87) and a locomotive depot. The exhibition gives a chance to visitors to get an idea about the most beautiful station building in Prague which was built between 1872 and 1875 as a prestigious structure of the significant Austrian Northwestern Railway Company. A 3D model of the building including its remarkable sculptural decoration was printed based on the original technical drawings. Exhibit open through Monday, April 9.
Petřín Observation Tower Petřínské sady
A Place to Walk, Enjoy the View, and Learn about Quarrying.
The Tower Mystery Charles Bridge
On the occasion of the celebrations of Charles IV’s birth anniversary, the City of Prague Museum opened a permanent exhibition in the Old Town Bridge Tower. Since the tower was a part of Charles Bridge and the two structures were founded at the same time, the foundation stone of the bridge might be hidden in the pier located below the tower. The tower’s construction was completed along with the bridge in the early 15th century. For its architectural and artistic aspects, the tower ranks among the greatest highlights of High Gothic structures of Charles IV, not only in Prague but also in (Central) Europe. The tower is distinguished by many authentic details (e.g. mason’s marks), artistic decoration, and its urban appearance. The permanent exhibition presents unquestionable facts as well as various hypotheses, which arouse the visitors’ interest although they cannot be verified. A small presentation of objects retrieved from the Vltava, including the latest findings of the unique riverbed research focused on the riverbed mapping, is installed in the tower’s underground.
Powder Tower
Nám. Republiky 5
This monumental entrance by which the coronation processions of Czech kings entered the Old Town is one of the most significant monuments of Late Gothic Prague. Completed in 1475, the Powder Tower, which formerly served as a gunpowder store, is still the starting point for the Coronation or Royal Route to Prague Castle. The viewing gallery is located at a height of 44 m.
Custos Turris / City Warden

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | October 2017
permanent exhibition about the arduous life of tower wardens, the history of the structure, the development of the town watchtower service, and the belfry’s misuse during the totalitarian regime. Visitors can take a look into the tower warden’s flat of the second half of the 18th century, which includes a smoke kitchen – the only publicly accessible one in Prague. This part continues with a signalling room – where the tower warden did his job. The interior of this room corresponds to the first half of the 19th century. The second flat of the tower warden dates to 1891 when the signalling function was cancelled and the warden looked after the clock. The exhibition also presents the Baroque sewage system, and visitors may admire the bell chamber with a bell chair and St Nicholas Bell of 1576. The tower also includes the unique ‘Kajka’ – an observation post of the State Security on the very top of the belfry, which was used until 1990.
Lesser Town Bridge Tower Charles Bridge
The Lesser Town Bridge Tower is situated at one end of Charles Bridge, and is the ancient gate to the Lesser Town..For tourists arriving from the Old Town, this is the main pedestrian entrance to the Lesser Town, a lovely quarter of Prague with restaurants, bars and boutique shops. The Lesser Town Bridge Tower was built in the second half of the 15th century under the rule of King George of Podebrady. The model for its construction was undoubtedly the Old Town Bridge Tower, constructed earlier on the opposite side of Charles Bridge.Connected to the Lesser Town Bridge Tower by a walkway is a smaller tower, Judith‘s Tower, the only remaining part of the original Prague bridge, the Romanesque Judith‘s Bridge, which was destroyed by floods in 1342.Inside the Lesser Town Bridge Tower is an exhibition dedicated to the eventful history of Charles Bridge, with graphic descriptions of the invading armies that have crossed it. There are stairs to the top, which you can climb for a fine view over the Lesser Town, Charles Bridge, the Vltava River and across into Prague‘s Old Town.
New Mill Water Tower Nové mlýny 827/3A
The New Mill Water Tower, which is open to the public for the first time ever, presents a permanent exhibition about Prague fires in the past and a history of Prague firefighters. This technical structure was erected after the mid-17th century to provide a water supply to the surroundings of the New Town of Prague. In the 15th century, a wooden water tower was on the site of today’s tower; a sumptuous stone tower was built between 1602 and 1606 with a lookout area referred to as ‘Lusthaus’ on the top floor.
History of Fire Fighting and Fires in Prague New Mill Water Tower
Nové mlýny 827/3A
The exhibition presents the threat of fire for Prague many centuries ago as well as in recent times. Furthermore, the methods used by the metropolis residents to defend against the destructive element will be presented along with the development of technical solutions and the institutional establishment of fire fighting. The form and layout of the permanent exhibition are tailored to the spatial conditions of the New Mill Water Tower. Digital reproductions of Prague vistas, disastrous fires in Prague, and prominent fire fighters with their gear and tools will be presented. The reproductions come from the collections of the City of Prague Museum and photo archives of the Fire Rescue Service of the City of Prague. The exhibition concept is based on multimedia elements. In addition to specific depictions of fire fighting via picture projection, prints, photographs, and historical textbooks for fire fighters and fire fighting codes, visitors will have a chance to experience the terrifying moments during vast fires in medieval and early modern Prague. The feeling of the threat of fire affecting all quarters of Prague will be created via sensual illusions.

Farmers market guide
Not all markets are created equal. Here's our guide to the late season markets.
Scenes from the new Heřmaňák Farmers Market, which is already proving to be extremely popular. If you're going, be sure and take your own bags!
BY JIŘÍ SEDLÁČEK
After a long absence, Czech farmer’s markets reappeared in 2010, after a long disappearance during the communist era and early years of capitalism of the nineties. And while the idea of straight from the farm to the hands of consumers is a great concept, far too often they are not real farmers markets but rather ordinary fairs. Proper farmers markets sell food from Czech, primarily smaller, farms and where the products are sold directly by the producer to the customer without any other trade links. Proper farmers markets should follow the so-called Farmers markets’ Code. The authenticity of the market can also be guaranteed by the membership in the Asociace farmářských tržišť ČR (the Association of Farmers Markets in the Czech Republic). Only two of the markets described below are members of this Association. Here follows a short commentary about several selected markets in the centre of Prague.
HAVELÁK MUNICIPAL MARKET
Havelský trh, Havelská 13, Prague 1 Preserved marketplace in the centre of the old Prague. Founded as early as in 1232. And although you can buy fruit, even exotic, vegetables, confectionery products, the market has become filled with mostly souvenirs, trinkets, Russian Matryoshka dolls, and replicas of Soviet military uniforms. The overwhelming majority of goods are re-sold and don’t come from area farms.
HEŘMAŇÁK FARMERS MARKET

"Once I was paying for a pie in a grocery store. It cost only six crowns but all I had was a two-hundred banknote. The lady behind the counter looked at me in surprise and asked: ‚Don’t you have a smaller one?‘ Before I managed to answer, a man who stood in the queue behind me, said: ‚Even a smaller hat? I don’t think so!‘ I’ve been wearing it for a year now, I don’t leave home without it. Because when I don’t wear it, nobody approaches me, nobody smiles at me. I think that I brighten some people’s day. I guess there are people who don’t like it but those usually just look at me like I’d killed their hamster and go their way. But you won’t experience any change or adventure this way! I used to live like that. But when I came to Prague, I found out that when you don’t go to bed early, you can experience so many things. And you gotta get

up in the morning anyways. I have my coffee and move on. Once I didn’t sleep for two days in a row and nothing happened. Well, okey, I jumped into the Vltava river. In March. At 3 a.m. Naked. And nothing happened! I didn’t freeze to death, I didn’t get pneumonia, I didn’t even get a cold. I found out that sometimes nothing happens when I break some unwritten rules. So now I’ve been breaking the unwritten rule that states that one shouldn’t wear a small hat. My parents ask me: ‚What’s that thing on your head?‘ I keep telling them: ‚Take it easy, it will pass, I will grow out of it!’“
