JEREMY LOOPS + SUPPORT: MICROPHONE Juxtaposing booming city rhythms with lilting folk, Jeremy Loops perfectly captures the duality of his South African life. The extremes aren’t new to the singer, who by day travels to the furthest corners of Africa to battle deforestation through his organization, Greenpop, and by night resumes as raconteur for raucous fans around the world. In a whirlwind 2014, Loops debuted at #1 on iTunes in South Africa, headlined major festivals, and maintained #1 on the three most prominent radio stations in Southern Africa with “Down South”, his breakout single. PLASTIC PEOPLE OF THE UNIVERSE Long before Pussy Riot was even born, Plastic People of the Universe (PPU) was an “Anti-establishment” Punk force in a communist Prague. It was the foremost representative of Prague’s underground culture (1968–1989), which had gone against the grain of Czechoslovakia’s Communist regime. Due to their non-conformism, members of the band often suffered serious repercussions such as arrests. After the Velvet Revolution, the band resurfaced, even maintaining a friendship with President Havel. The group continues to perform despite the death of its founder, main composer and bassist, Milan “Mejla” Hlavsa in 2001. It’s still a great act to see. When: Tuesday, August 30, 9 PM Where: Vagon, Palác Metro Národní 25, Praha 1

ICE CREAM
IN PRAGUE
ANGELATO Rytířská 27, Praha 1 Újezd 24, Praha 1
2AD ICE-CREAM Masarykova 20, Kačice
This ice-cream powerhouse - and our favorite ice-cream in Prague - is seated in Kacice, a tiny village just a mile off the main road from Prague to the Carlsbad spa, but the shop attracts ice-cream addicts from near and afar. But you don’t really have to buy a bus ticket anywhere if you want to try a scoop, as they deliver to many great Prague coffee shops. Their standard is high for most ice-creams, but we keep coming back for the luscious, wonderful pistachio ice-cream. Their rowanberry is wicked, too. Never had rowanberry? Just order it. It’s so good you will want to cry. Where to have it? 2AD ice-cream is served in some our favorite cafes in town: EMA Espresso Bar, Kavarna Místo, Muj salek kavy and Cafe Jen, and in other cafes like Novy svet, Alza and the Kido bistro.
Angelato is hardly a secret: if you ask anyone what is the best ice-cream in town, many will mention this central ice-cream parlor. The insufferably long lines that can sometimes seen in front of its venue at Rytirska near the bottom of the Wenceslas Square just go to prove the fame. Our favorite is still the mango sorbet, although it’s been fun trying their seasonal extras, incl. some wackier flavours. We often stop in their newer location in the Ujezd area near the bottom station of the Petrin funicular, which is really nice, has more room to hang out in and the lines are (still) shorter. We’re actually fans of their lactose-free flavors, including the coconut and the chocolate sorbets. Plus they also have gluten free cones for those who care. Cheapo tip of the day: Go for the girl behind the counter in the Ujezd location. She’s not shy to give big tasting portions!

ZMRZLINAR Slezská 15, Praha 2
If there is a designer ice-cream parlor in Prague, it must be Zmrzlinar. The shop opened in Prague’s Vinohrady district with a bang and a fresh marketing campaign earlier this year, and appealed to the wider public with a wide array of 2AD ice-cream and a minimalist aesthetic with bare concrete and a nearly non-existent color scheme. We do love that place: it’s simple, serves probably the widest assortment of 2AD icecream in town (had their seasonal blueberry three days ago and it was awesome), is devoid of any mass tourism, and the ice-cream-againstbare-concrete is a great Instagram shot. A must for an ice-cream aficionado in Prague. Their scoops are on smaller side, but for those who cannot make up their mind (yes, ahem, we’re looking at you), Zmrzlinar offers a tasting bowl with five flavors.
AFFOGATOS Various locations
If you’re in for an ice-cream treat in Prague - and perhaps a bit of buzz - icecream parlors are not your only option. Virtually all great cafes in Prague offer an affogato: a scoop of ice-cream with a shot of espresso. These range from the standard plain ice-cream to more adventurous options: if you haven’t tried Hazelnut ice-cream affogato and like Nutella, this could be your summer treat game-changer (they sometimes have it in Kavarna Místo), and the added small shot of Czech rum in onesip coffee ticks all of our three main food groups: sweets, coffee and alcohol. Ask your favorite Prague barista for more details.

CESTR
Legerova 75/57, Praha 1 Not many people would associate the Czech meat-lovers paradise with icecream but then again, they would be wrong. If a scoop of their beer icecream is wrong, we do not want to be right. They have other flavors, too, but the beer ice-cream is the best. With their outdoor seating open during the summer, this could be a great stop when you venture up from the Wenceslas Sq. to the Vinohrady district. (Having a burger or sausage from the outside grill before the ice-cream would not hurt, either). Oh, and have we mentioned we have the recipe, too?
PURO GELATO Na Hrobci 410/1, Praha 2 - Výtoň
Puro Gelato occupies a great little corner shop near the Vyton tram stop underneath the Vysehrad fortress. They offer about 10 flavors a day and have been replacing them daily since their opening. The girls behind the counter are friendly and very helpful and the decor of the place is cute. The different flavors are hit and miss: we really liked the blueberry with sour cream, the banana and the poppyseed, the ricotta with figs was okay, and we’d skip the salted caramel and carrot gelato the next time we’re there. We generally prefer their sorbets to their gelato. But that’s truly beside the point here: just get a flavor you like, and sit down in the shady side street in front of the shop, or take it on a stroll through the Prague riverside on your way back to the centre. A great stop on your Saturday route to the Naplavka farmers’ market nearby. (Puro Gelato is about to open a shop in the Kaprova street in the centre, too.)
CREME DE LA CREME Husova 231/12, Staré Město, Praha 1
Creme de la Creme, standing in the ashes of the now defunct Cream & Dream, is your haven of good icecream if you find yourself in one of the most touristy places in Prague, the pretty dismal Karlova street. Just like all the ice-cream parlors in this list, Creme de la Creme does not use any stabilizers or other unwanted shortcuts to great ice-cream. Their flavors are bold and easy to recognize: the chocolate-and-chili was probably the spiciest ice-cream we’ve had. This is also your place if you are in the market for vegan ice-creams, which are not limited to your usual sorbets. They do like to try new flavors that are out of the ordinary, either by themselves or in cooperation with others, like the tarragon ice-cream they made with Chef Vsetecka that was sold over at the Eska restaurant. Their ice-creams can be also found in the Parlor ice-cream sandwich place in the Karlin district, and in a few other places around Prague.
TRI KOPECKY Various locations
This ice-cream made at home by a popular local food blogger is served in another of our favorites, the wonderful I Need Coffee, and in Dish, our favorite burger joint in town. Our favorite is the salted caramel. It is less sweet and has a full taste. We’re not that crazy about the other flavors. Make sure the ice-cream is fresh and has not crystalized too much due to improper storage.

Náměstí Republiky 3/4, Praha 1 The premiere of Bizet’s Carmen in Paris in 1875 passed almost without records and without any success. But just eight years after Bizet’s opera Carmen’s death came again, this time in triumph, in opera houses throughout the world and has become one of the most played and staged operas in history. The librettists Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy were inspired by Prosper measure about a beautiful and fearless Carmen, whose young and carefree life abruptly ended the hand of a spurned lover. Her tragic story became a poignant testimony to the passionate atmosphere in Spain at that time.

No drama is so small that you can not outgrow over your head - and no trauma is not as playful as to not dissolve the soda. Small stories, small sounds great passion, a great word. Of nekonečnýho tension between the two poles beauty born to kiss everybody. And if tenderly addressing just you, think of it as a privilege. Balbínova 6, Praha 2 Lee Andrew Davison is from Oklahoma. Thomas, Irena, Chris and Mark are from Prague and its surroundings. What unites them? Everybody loves spirituals. Singing Negro spirituals is incredibly difficult discipline that this group handles well., Impressive songs that sprang from the desire for freedom of American slaves, are the basis of all of contemporary popular music. In editing a cappella (without instruments) you can perceive elements of pop, rock, country, bluegrass, gospel, world music, ethno and others. But moreover, it remains separate dynamo hub that captivates everyone.

Náměstí Republiky 3/4, Praha 1 The famous opera in four acts by French composer Georges Bizet. The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on a novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée. The opera was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 3 March 1875, where its breaking of conventions shocked and scandalized its first audiences. Bizet died suddenly after the 33rd performance, unaware that the work would achieve international acclaim within the following ten years. Carmen has since become one of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the classical canon; the “Habanera” from act 1 and the “Toreador Song” from act 2 are among the best known of all operatic arias.

Helpful Hint for Visitors: To fit in on the metro, wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, just don’t act like an idiot.
TRAM & METRO MAP
Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or use a taxi to get to your destination.

Dining After
MIDNIGHT
The end of a night out is a ritual for most. If you’re American, youre probably stumbling around looking for a Taco Bell or IHOP, and if you’re British a kebab or chippy. But this is Prague. And despite the taps flowing until well into the late night, most restaurant kitchens aren’t open. So here’s our quick guide to five places in Prague to get food after a night out. So grab your friends, send for your Uber, and let’s eat!
Pizza Roma Uno JAGELLONSKÁ 16, PRAHA 3
For some, the perfect culinary ending to night out is pizza. Pizza Roma Uno is another 24hour restaurant, and they’ve been dishing out amazing pizza for over 20 years. It’s a popular spot on the weekends, when party goers come in for that one last beer and a slice.
Tlusta Koala SENOVÁŽNÁ 8, PRAHA 1
Burrito Loco MASNÁ 2, PRAHA 1 SPÁLENÁ 43, PRAHA 1 ŠTEFÁNIKOVA 7, PRAHA 5 MILADY HORÁKOVÉ 3, PRAHA VINOHRADSKÁ 60, PRAHA 3 DEJVICKÁ 6, PRAHA 6 VÍTĚZNÉ 15, PRAHA 5
We’re starting off with the most obvious choice, Burrito Loco, the Prague embassy of Non-sobriety. With seven locations scattered around Prague (mostly near hotspots for bars and clubs) chances are you won’t have to go too far to find one. Best of all, they’re open 24 hours.
With a centrally located pub style atmosphere, Tlusta Koala is always a favorite. With ten beers on tap pouring well into the morning hours, this is the perfect place to continue your drinking while having some amazing food. Koala is also home to some pretty unique dishes, like Kangaroo steak. The kitchen serves food until 1:30 AM.
Pivnice U Sadu POSPÍŠILOVA 1528/2, PRAHA 3
Unlike a a lot of restaurants located near the TV tower, Pivnice U Sadu isn’t too posh. This place is filled with locals around the clock, and to us, it seems like the Czech version of the
Cheers Bar. A great interior reminiscent of an antique shoppe, It serves great pub-style local food until 4 am.
Hilton Café Bistro HILTON PRAGUE, POBŘEŽNÍ 1, PRAHA 8
If you were lucky enough to leave the bar with a hot date, the Hilton Café Bistro (located in the Prague Hilton Hotel) is the ticket. Here you will find a beautiful atmosphere and an incredible menu, with a focus on international and Mediterranean cuisine – plus great desserts. It’s open 24 hours, and is the perfect place to bring someone you are trying to impress (although it’s a bit spendy). Avoid this place if you’re trying to impress a girl and your next stop is your shitty hostel or studio apartment. One last late night tip: Trams and the Metro run less frequently during night service. Consider a taxi or using Uber to get to your destination when travelling late night. For even more late night restaurants, visit our website at thevisitor.cz. AUGUST 2016 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR
