THINGS OUR TOP PICKS OF THINGS TO DO IN SEPTEMBER
ToRtured Soul SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 8PM Don’t let the name fool you, the band is feel good dance music. Rocker Lenny Kravitz once described them as “something I’d wake up to on a Saturday morning when the sun is coming through the window . There aren’t enough people [like this] singing about love and honesty”. Influenced by the classic songcraft of Prince, Heatwave and Kool & The Gang, the members of Tortured Soul are three distinctive guys with three different backgrounds, united under a groove-centered rhythm. The band’s frontman and principal songwriter, John-Christian Urich, can be seen simultaneously drumming and singing with effortless mastery, while the rest of the collective, made up of keyboardist Ethan White and bassist Jordan Scannella, virtuosically generate the pulsating accompaniment. Inside the group’s mystique, the acid jazz is reminiscent of Jamiroquai funk, while deeply saturated in the contemporary freshness of house purveyors like Joey Negro, Kenny Dope, Soul Clap and Jamie Jones. Where: Lucerna Music Bar, Štěpánská 61, Praha 1
Prague CAR FESTIVAL 2016 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22Saturday, September 23 From exotics and tuners to the latest manufacturer models, the Prague Car Festival will have over 300 unique automobiles from various fields of motoring on hand for a two day show. 10AM
A collective of some of the area’s best chefs, pop-ups, craft restaurants and food trucks converge one last time for the season outside one of Prague’s funkiest venues. A little out of the center, but as always – damn good food and worth spending a few hours to fill your stomach. Pictured is a treat called a bubble waffle...we will be hunting them at the festival for sure. Where:Cross Club, Plynární 1096/23, 170 00 Praha 7
PRAGUE SHAKESPEARE COMPANY’S
DRUNk “All’s Well That Ends Well” FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 8PM
Shakespeare the way we think it should be seen – with a drink in hand. Prague Shakespeare Company is following up on their wonderful Drunk Hamlet with the wacky and beautiful fairy-tale All’s Well That Ends Well. Eight actors take on Shakespeare’s lesser known tragic-comedy… in the pub. Join the plucky Helena on a drunken adventure of unrelenting mirth, unexpected merriment and unending martinis! The show is in English and seating is limited (it is a pub after all), so we suggest making a reservation. Where: Swan Divadelni Klub, Ovocný trh 579/6, Praha 1
BEN HARPER aND THE INNOCENT CRIMINALS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 8PM Ben Harper brings his eclectic mix of blues, folk, soul, reggae and rock to Forum Karlin on September 28th. The American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is famous for his guitar-playing skills, vocals, live performances, and activism. He is currently touring on his “Call it what it is” tour. If there’s one thing you can’t accuse Ben Harper of, it’s being locked into a style. Harper is a three-time Grammy Award winner as well, winning awards for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album, in 2005. He also won a Grammy for Best Blues Album in 2014. And if you want to get old school, you might remember his 1999 hit “Steal My Kisses”. EXCELENT JUKEBOX: Wolf Alice + Gengahr Tuesday, SEPTEMBER 6, 7PM UK indie/alternative band Wolf Alice play Palac Akropolis as part of the Excelent Jukebox series. This is a rescheduled show from earlier in the year. If you’ve seen a Wolf Alice show before, you’ll agree – it was worth the wait. In fact, Wolf Alice is so damn good live, they actually received a Grammy Nomination for best live performance. UK band Gengahr will be opening up for them. Grab your tickets at GoOut.cz. Where: Palác Akropolis, Kubelíkova 1548/27, Praha 3
King Crimson
Wednesday, September 14, 8PM Thursday, September 15, 8PM When King Crimson debuted their album In the Court of the Crimson King in 1969, the mix of elements of jazz, classical, and experimental music sent waves throughout the music industry. The band found even greater success the following year by opening for the Rolling Stones. Since then, the band has developed a cult following with several more albums and tours. Member Robert Fripp is the only remaining founding member, but the band has improved with each incarnation. Some say they are the godfathers of exeperimental music. Be forewarned, if you’re expecting a bunch of old guys playing tired old tunes, this isn’t your show. The band is reinvigorated and embarking on a European tour with lots of great talent - including Jeremy Stacey of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on drums. Where: Forum Karlin, Pernerova 51, 186 00 Praha 8

The hostess slips out of her own wedding festivities to a remote cigar room, where she meets three men and an elephant in the room. Inspired by the magic of black and white films of yesteryear. Our
13 Favourite
COCKTAIL BARS In a city that has such a love affair with beer, sometimes it’s easy to forget about the cocktail. From a traditional Old Fashioned to the latest molecular mixology concoction, Prague has some amazing choices when you’re ready to hit the hard stuff. And best of all, while a nice cocktail can cost upwards of 20€ in New York or London, a majority of drinks found in Prague establishments don’t exceed 200czk.
Here's thirteen of our favourite watering holes, chosen not just for their spirited libations, but also their atmosphere and charm. But before you dive in, it's worth noting that these bars get extremely busy (especially on weekends), so calling ahead and making a reservation is almost a must. Enough of the small talk, get out there and enjoy! Na zdraví!
TrETTER’S V kolkovne 3, Praha 1 +420 224 811 165 www.tretters.cz The Tretter family has been in the bar business for over 90 years. So, no wonder it feels like you’re walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar from the moment you walk through the door. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. The drinks are incredible – custom cocktails and meticulously made classics, some with a new twist. Tretter’s gets absolutely packed, sometimes out of nowhere. The trick is a reservation, so you’ll want to call ahead. Pictured at right is a newcomer on the menu, The Bohemian Touch; homemade honey apple reduction, a few drops of Carlsbad Becherovka and Chivas Regal 12 Year.

BLACK ANGEL’S
PARLOUR
Staroměstské nám. 29, Praha 1 +420 224 213 807 www.blackangels.cz
Krakovská 15, Praha 1 +420 777 200 015 www.parlour.cz
Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. Visually amazing with high cellar ceilings, chandaliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. The drinks are amazing The only downside to Black Angels is the influx of tourists which can pack the place, especially groups.
Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found- and that’s great with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, although it’s fastly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and find the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. When it comes to choices, the good news is you don’t have to worry about finding a menu in English, because there is no menu. Your bartender will ask you what you like and offer suggestions based on your input. The results are never less than spectacular.
BARS & BOOKS Manesova 64, Praha 2 +420 222 724 581 Týnská 19, Praha 1 +420 224 815 122 Bars & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). Like it’s New York counterpart, the bar envokes the feeling of a gentleman’s libary. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (mostly for visual aesthetics). The cocktails here are serious business and they offer a wide selection to match what you’re craving. They’re also a cigar bar, so if you’re offended by cigar smoke, you may want to look elsewhere. However, if you’re looking for a nice Cuban to go with your perfectly made cocktail, this is the place to be. 10

BONVIVANT’s CTC Bartolomějská 305, Praha 1 +420 775 331 862 The first time our office staff went to Bonvivant, we were horrified when one of our interns ordered a shot of Absinth instead of a nice craft cocktail. What the hell is with college kids these days? To our delight, the bartender explained they would gladly oblige, but serve it the French style, with pure cold water running over a sugar cube into the glass of Absinth. We knew right then (or maybe a few drinks later) that the bar staff here are masters when it comes to cocktails. The bar isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with midcentury wood furnishings, pressed tin ceiling and checkered floor. When it comes to ordering, forget the menu. Just talk to your bartender. They’re a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your taste. Incidentally, the “CTC” actually stands for cocktail tapas café, and it hits the mark on each one, serving some pretty damn tasty tapes dishes and coffee as well.
PROLOG Nádražní 57/108, Praha 5 +420 775 005 007 www.prologbar.cz Prolog is about attention to detail, and they’ve clearly put thought into every aspect of their work. Take for instance, the drink menu. In 1907, an American Physician weighed patients just before and after death, concluding the weight of the soul to be 21 grams. That inspired Prolog’s 21 drink menu, serving as a reminder to patrons to celebrate life. Even more, seven of those 21 drinks are aptly named after the Seven Deadly Sins. For instance, the drink pictured here is the Sloth – a concoction of Magellan gin, chamomile cordial and Prosecco, all which lazily dawdle on a velvet pillow filled with chamomile. Although the cocktails are our focus, the food here is excellent as well. Prolog’s interior has a metropolitan feel, and we found the staff to be attentive and knowledgeable every time we’re there. And although we usually set out for Prolog as our destination, their location which is across from Nový Smíchov also makes for perfect drinks after a movie or evening of shopping.

CASH ONLY BAR
LE VALMONT
Liliova 3, Prague 1 +420 778 087 117 (no reservations) www.cashonlybar.cz
Uhelný trh 414/9, Prague 1 +420 224 267 266 www.levalmont.cz
Just around the corner from it’s older sibling The Hemingway Bar, this little gem is making it’s own name with cocktails like The One Dollar Baby, Kentucky Smash, and Pin-Up Martini (pictured below and made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne). It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and you guessed it they don’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs.
Le Valmont is a newcomer, only having opened in Spring, 2016. The cocktail lounge is connected to a dance club, making it versital for a night out. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Miles Forman movie by the same name, it’s decorated in 18th century French fashion with abusson floor carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandelliers by Preciosa. It’s fastly becoming the chic place to be among the local “in” crowd. Drinks are prepared by an award winning bar staff, and in addition to bespoke cocktails, Le Valmont offers an impressive list of French wines and Champagne. There is a strict dress code at Le Valmont; no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandles. Reservations are all but required- the 100 capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly.
HEMINGWAY’S Karolíny Světlé 26, Praha 1 +420 773 974 764 www.hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked someone, they’ve already recommended Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. Imaginative drinks (like cocktails served from tiny gasoline canisters and perfume bottles) and personal friendly service are two of the benchmarks that make Hemingway’s amazing. The bar’s philosophy is every bottom must have a chair, so you don’t experience that overcrowded feeling. Because of their popularity, Hemingway’s is almost always busy, so we would recommend a reservation or you’ll find yourself waiting outside. 12

OBLACA Žižkov Television Tower Mahlerovy sady 2699/1, Praha 3 + 420 210 320 086 www.oblaca.cz Better cocktails through science. That’s the philosophy of Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). Števlík deploys Molecular Mixology in his cocktail designs, exploring the physical and chemical transformations of ingredients that occur when making a cocktail. When we met with Števlík, we couldn’t believe how passionate for his craft he is, detailing his quest for unique and exciting combinations of natural tastes, and how the palette reacts. And what better laboratory for Števlík to create his un-conventional concoctions that high above Prague in one of the most unconventional buildings in Europe - Žižkov Television Tower. The Oblaca bar showcases a panaoramic view of Prague with a modern, almost futuristic like interior. If Žižkov Television Tower is on your list of things to see, make Oblaca your destination there instead of the observation deck. You’ll thank us later.
ANONYMOUS BAR Michalská 432/12, Praha 1 +420 608 280 069 www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender what you like and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the various drink menus as creative as the drinks themselves. Patrons are given a secret menu printed in UV ink, along with a small blacklight, or you can view the latest specialties on a ViewMaster, which was brought to our table. The latest drink menu was inspired by video games (below, you’ll find the Angry Birds inspired drink). Crafted after the hideout in the movie V for Vandetta, AnonymouS has a nice courtyard and cozy bar and makes for a perfect night out to remember. Reservations are taken only until 9pm.

L'flEUR V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha 1-Staré Město +420 773 974 764 www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s era feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The bar has a nice buzz to it on the inside, and for a while we almost forgot what year it was. There’s a lot of choices on the drink menu, and the signature drinks all come with their own history and story, which your bartender is always happy to explain. The drinks are amazing and original - ther’es simply no other way to desrcibe them.If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s vast and expansive Champagne list.
BUGSY’S Pařížská 1068/10 - Praha 1 +420 224 810 287 www.bugsysbar.cz Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up in 1992 just after the Velvet Revolution. They’ve seen a lot of changes over the years, but the constant has been their attention to details and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 Single Malt Whiskeys and 100 rums. The interior is stylish and upscale, modern and dark. It’s also a cigar-friendly cocktail lounge, with a great selection of cigars in the walk-in humidor near the entry. If you’re a non-smoker, don’t worry – they’ve clearly invested in great extraction fans, so you’ll be fine. 14

The exhibition of the restored Rembrandt is accompanied by the After Rembrandt project, presenting the works of four contemporary artists (Štefan Tóth, Jakub Špaňhel, Vladimír Véla and Alžběta Josefy) who have created artistic responses to Rembrandt’s painting. These which will be installed opposite Rembrandt’s painting and although they all follow the same format, each one is a product of the artist’s unique invention. The aim is to show the public that old art is a constant source of inspiration for fresh generations of artists, that it has its potential and significance for the present day and is not merely a collection of artefacts preserved on the walls of exhibition halls.

Prague Fantastic Realism 1960–1967
Through September 4, 2016 Prague City Gallery – Colloredo-Mansfeld Palace (Galerie hlavního města Prahy – ColloredoMansfeldský palác), Karlova 2, Praha 1 Fantastic Realism is a style of painting now little known in this country. Its exponents in the second half of the 20th century concentrated on the treatment of fantastic and grotesque subjects, relating their output on the one hand to the legacy of various historical epochs of art history, and on the other, to themes relevant to their contemporary popular culture. The aesthetic of their works was determined, during the years of their studies, by the impact of the bizarre, occasionally absurd local spirit characteristic for Prague in those years, wherein magic of the city’s past history intertwined with the drabness of the communist era, and nostalgia for the loss of the one-time high bourgeois culture with the surreal poetry of the suburbia, ruins and rubbish heaps.

Breaking Bach
FLYING STEPS delight AUDIENCES with an unlikely COMBO
By
Veronika KUsova
Think classical music. Think Bach. What kind of enthusiasts would you associate with it? Chances are, you’re thinking a golden hall full of people in suits and fancy dresses, right? The last thing on your mind is probably a hip-hop dance crew in baggy pants and baseball caps. But Flying Steps, four-time Break Dancing World Champions are coming to Prague to set you straight. This dance crew from Berlin specializes in break dancing (or “b-boying”) and other types of street dance, and they’re currently on a world tour with their one-of-a-kind show: Red Bull Flying Bach. The group got it’s start in 2010, when group founder Vartan Bassil and an opera conductor Christoph Hagel came up with something unthinkable: They would take Johann Sebastian Bach’s masterpiece The Well-Tempered Clavier and use it to create a feature length breakdance performance. Needless to say, many people were skeptical if the idea would work. However, a few months later Flying Steps proved
them wrong, with sold-out shows all over the world - and their audience now amounting to more than 400,000 classical-music-meets-street-dance fans. The September show is a return for Red Bull Flying Bach. Flying Steps amazed audiences in the Czech Republic once before in 2012. Now, after four years, they’re eager to return with a bigger and more refined show that’s tuned to perfection.
More about the show Red Bull Flying Bach is not only trying to show that breakdancing to classical music can be beautiful; It is also tells a story. A teacher and his six students are rehearsing for a show. Arguments, fights, disappointments and delights, as an audience we observe the dynamics of their confrontations. And Just like the highs and lows of the notes, the moods and steps of the dancers change constantly. But their teacher is pushing them and pushing the boundaries to make it work. The show is surprisingly engaging, and audiences of all ages and background find themselves drawn in
to the unlikely combination of music and dance that were born nearly 100 years apart. The steps of every dancer are carefully choreographed to interpret different motifs and even the different voices that together create preludes and fugues of The Well-Tempered Clavier. We can only wonder what Bach himself would think about such interpretation of his work, but we do know is what most reviewers are saying. They can’t help but agree that the dancers’ performance is a perfect visualization of the live music that accompanies it. To describe the show is difficult – It’s a combination of a musical, ballet and concert blended into one breathtaking experience. When: Tuesday, September 23, 8PM Wednesday, September 24, 8PM Where: Forum Karlín. Pernerova 53, Praha 8 Tickets: www.livenation.cz

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | SEPTEMBER 2016
THE MUCHA MUSEUM:
THE FATHER OF
ART NOUVEAU When Moravian Count Karl Khuen of Mikulov hired a 21 year old artist named Alfonse Mucha to decorate his Castle with murals, he was so impressed with the young artist’s work that he agreed to sponsor Mucha’s formal training at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. It proved to be a single act which not only launched the career of the renowned artist, but also led to the birth of Art Nouveau. Mucha moved to Paris in 1887 to continue his studies, while also producing magazine and advertising illustrations to support himself. Nearing the end of 1894, Mucha happened to into a print shop where he overheard the print shop owner and a customer discussing a need for an advertising poster for a play which featured famous Parisian actress Sarah Bernhardt at the Theater on the Boulevard Saint-Martin. Mucha seized the opportunity, and volunteered to produce a lithographed poster within two weeks. On 1 January 1895, the advertisement for the play Gismonda by Victorien Sardou was posted in the city, where it attracted much attention and admiration, Including from Bernhardt herself.
Bernhardt was so satisfied with the success of this first poster that she began a six-year contract with Mucha. Over the following years, Mucha produced a flurry of paintings, posters, advertisements, and book illustrations, as well as designs for jewelry, carpets, wallpaper, and theatre sets in what was termed initially The Mucha Style but became known as Art Nouveau (French for “new art”). Mucha’s works frequently featured beautiful young women in flowing, vaguely Neoclassical-looking robes, often surrounded by lush flowers which sometimes formed halos behind their heads. In contrast with contemporary poster makers he used pale pastel colors. As Mucha grew in popularity, his Art Nouveau style was often imitated. Eventually, Mucha attempted to disassociate himself from the term “Art Nouveau” throughout his life. Instead, he always insisted that rather than maintaining any fashionable stylistic form, his paintings were entirely a product of himself and Czech art. Regardless of what you call it, Mucha’s style left an unmistakable mark on the art world and popular culture that still resonates today. The Mucha Museum resides in the Kaunitz Palace in the centre of Prague, and is home to a comprehensive cross section of works loaned by the Mucha Foundation. This includes lithographs, paintings, drawings, pastels, statues, photographs and personal memorabilia. The collection provides a unique view into the universe of the artist who is famous for the posters he created for Sarah Bernhardt, the

PRAGUE BY E-BIKE:
PEDAL POWER Local eBike company I Like Ebike offers adventure seekers a variety of guided tours
With the recent legislation barring Segway Tours from the city centre in Prague, the electric bike tour industry has found itself in high gear. Local tour operator I Like eBike says their guided tours are extremely popular with tourists, giving them a perspective of the city that you just can’t find on a tour bus. Riders are able to progress at a slower pace and without looking at a city though a pane of glass from a bus seat. I Like eBikes primarily use cycle paths and parks to cruise in on their tours; Prague is quite hilly, but truly bike friendly. Cycle paths are marked brilliantly and they connect perfecty to each of the main city sights. I Like eBike says they try to intentionally avoid the area around the Old Town Square due to its easy accessibility on foot and the extensive amount of tourists there. The development of cycle paths in the city has fastly made Prague a superb place for cyclists So what exactly is an eBike? An electric bike works in a unique way;
using a system called PEDELEC, the small motor helps you when peddling. Unlike a scooter, if you don’t pedal, the motor doesn’t help you and when you brake, the motor switches off. Anyone who can ride a bicycle can certainly ride an eBike. And the best part is you are able to enjoy seeing a big area of Prague without even a drop of sweat. Riding an eBike is pretty straight forward, but just in case – I Like eBike has a ten minute training course before setting off. I Like eBike gives adventurers three great tour options to choose from. If you’ve had enough of the city centre’s history, you can explore the Real Prague and see its interconnection with past regimes (especially with communist dictatorship) and changes in a society after the entry to market oriented economy. This is a great way to discover lesser known parts of Prague just the way locals perceive and see it. The tour leaves every morning around 9am for
32km over five hours and lets riders experience the contrast between the historic city centre and outskirts of the city. Riders get to see beyond the old buildings and see communist-era tower blocks up close and personal, visit a national park, film studios, John Lennon Wall, Prague’s Staropramen Brewery, The Dancing House, and the largest stadium in the world. The View Point Ride is probably the most popular eBike tour (and where riders really use the electric assistance of the bike). With ten incredible vantage point views of the historical city centre, you’ll want to bring your camera. In all, there’s around 32 stops along the 30km five-hour tour, including the square where the Velvet Revolution happened, a breathtaking park complete with nuclear bunkers, and Strahov Monastery where monks are brewing some of Prague’s best beer. The Romantic Ride tour is perfect for couples, families with kids or bigger groups who want to enjoy the relax
atmosphere of Prague. During 3 hours you will see many beautiful parks, sights and views. You will find out more about the history of the city and experience riverside views from the banks of the Vltava. This tour has also a night ride option - since all monuments are lit and you can enjoy riding on empty streets. The tour is around 15km / 9miles around the city and takes in 3 panoramic views - from Strahov monastery, the View Tower, Prague Castle, Charles bridge and the romantic Kampa island. The tour was quite enjoyable and it's made us consider getting an eBike just for our own personal use. The staff is friendly and did a great job leading our group. Prices for the 15km tour are 50€, while the 30km tour runs about 60€. I Like eBike's location is easy to find, just under Prague Castle. To book a reservation, call them at +420 604 474 46, or visit them online at Ilikeebike.cz.

“A Long time ago, my wife and I were coming back home from Germany in a car on a sixlane highway. It was already dark, I was driving and my wife was sleping on the seat next to me. We’d driven all the way from Hannover, I was a bit tired after the long journey and at the same time I thought that we would be home quite soon. Suddenly my wife woke up, looked in front of her and screamed: “Watch out, there’s a car!” We were driving in the second lane in which there stood, in the middle of the highway, a car with its lights off. Both its electricity and engine must had stopped 34
working. But who could expect such a thing? There were also lights of cars in the opposite direction in my eyes and so I simply didn’t notice it. My wife woke up and screamed in the last moment where I could react to it. If she had woken up two seconds later, I wouldn’t stand here and talk to you now. Some force wanted us not to die back then. When you experience a hundred of such events, you learn to thank this force. Later I went through three utterly miraculous events but I am not going to talk about those. To describe these kinds of experiences is pointless – it can

be as clear to you as when you place a hand on a hot stove but when you start to talk about it to people, they immediately start to think that you make things up or that you are crazy. I don’t need that. But I can tell you that once you realize the existence of this force – some people call it God, others Providence, or Destiny – you reach a certain serenity. Because you know that there is someone watching over you. And you know that you cannot change anything in your life on your own.“
