april in Prague! Welcome Spring! With March behind us comes warmer weather and budding tress signaling the beginning of Spring. Switch out your snow boots for your best pair of walking shoes as it’s time to explore the city in the glistening sunlight. In this month’s edition of Prague Visitor, we’ve highlighted some of the best places and tours to attend that’ll keep you outside enjoying the warm weather all day long. Keep a sharp eye out as Olivia Potenziano directs you to look down rather than up at the Stolperstein stones hidden in and around Prague’s cobblestones streets. German for Stumbling rocks, the Stolperstein stones remember the Jewish citizens who were taken and killed during the Nazi regime. These stones are an integral part of Czech THE

history and can be easily missed if you don’t look close enough. They can be easily identified by their gold-plated face and bold engravings featuring the Jewish citizens who were taken. These blocks can be found on the cobblestone walkways in and around Old Town Square. Afterwards Sarah Jackson invites you to grab a bite to eat at Lasgneria in the residential area of Vinorady for some of the best Italian food in the city. With a motto like “Lasagne with Love”, you can’t go wrong with anything their menu has to offer. With winter finally leaving us means a seasonal menu change for one of the nine lasagna dishes offered. Last season featured a specialty pesto theme while Spring ushers in Salmon and Zucchini or Salmon and asparagus lasagna.
Lastly, Easter is just around the corner celebrating Prague’s Christian roots and the beginning of Spring. In Czech Easter is known as “Velinknoce” which translates as “Great Night”, referring to the day in which Jesus rose from the dead. Head to the nearest market to check out the “kraslice” (Easter Eggs) that are available to purchase, or you can design some of your own. But be careful when taking them home as souvenirs as they’re quite delicate! We hope this month’s edition of Prague Resident adds to your holiday enjoyment as we welcome the new season. If there are any topics you’d like covered in future editions, please send us your ideas on Facebook or Instagram!

Stumbling Stones subtle memorials remind us of a darker time By OLIVIA POTENZIANO
While exploring the winding streets of Old Town, you may come across a little brass plate with a name on it, standing out against the grey, brown and red same sized cobblestones that surround it. German artist and creator Gunter Demnig crafted and placed each of these brass "stumbling stones" in rememberence of victims of the Nazi regime. Since 1996, Demnig has placed over 70,000 stumbling stones (translated to Stolpersteines in German) in over 1,200 European cities, making it the largest decentralized monument in the world. There are over 300 Stolpersteines in Prague alone. Each stone is strategically placed outside the last place the victims lived voluntarily before being taken from their homes by the Nazis. The stones begin with, “Here lived…” followed by the victims name, date of birth and the fate of the victim, which range from deported to exiled, suicide and murdered. Demnig creates the stumbling stones not only for Jewish people but for anyone whose life was irreversibly changed by the Nazis, including minority groups such as Roma and Sinti, gay people and anyone labeled “asocial” by the regime. A stone can be created for a person who fled Europe and survived, or was deported but able to escape. These stones are made to create a historical monument that is unavoidably present in your everyday life. One moment you’re walking along admiring a cobblestone street in Prague and the next you’re looking down at a place where a person’s life changed. “You make a decision to visit a Holocaust memorial...it remains abstract… But not with the stumbling blocks,” Demnig said in an interview with NPR. “Suddenly they are there, right outside your front door, at your feet, in front of you.” The stones have not been met without controversy. Demnig laid some of the first stones in Berlin illegally, and some cities have opted not
to allow him to place Stolpersteine there. Munich, for example, claimed it was disrespectful to put the stones on the ground where they would be walked upon. Demnig’s creation of the stumbling stones are paid for by private funding and donations. Once the project became more well known, people from all over the continent contacted him to create a stone for a family member or loved one that was a victim to the Nazis. From the Netherlands to Italy, the requests for these stones became so high that the artists of the Stolpersteine no longer had to search for victims to make stones for.
There were so many stones to lay that Demnig quickly ran out of time to both create the stones and travel to the cities where they are laid. Sculptor Michael Friedrichs-Friedländer then joined the project, aiding Demnig by handling the creation of the stones. You can stumble across a few stones yourself just by walking around Prague, or you can join one of the many guided tours where locals will direct you to the Stolpersteine on the streets. As you follow the tour around Prague’s Josefov district, passing by Kafka’s childhood home and Jewish synagogues, you will find many of the stones scattered throughout the area, sharing the various stories of the victims who used to live there. “Everytime I give a tour I do mention the Stolpersteine and this history behind it,” says Eva Illnerová, a tour guide in Prague. “The stones are a symbolic memorial to those who have no graves anywhere else. I hope that one day it will be more common for people to pay attention to detail and notice the stones on their own.” Besides just keeping an eye out as you walk around the beautiful city center, you can also use a map to search for specific locations of the stones and where specific names are laid. Other cities, such as Berlin and Budapest, offer tours and similar websites to find the Stolpersteine. You can also find a calendar of Demnig’s Stolpersteine laying ceremonies for the rest of 2019 at stolpersteine.eu. April 2019 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR

Easter Traditions Veselé Velikonoce! Velikonoce, the Czech name for Easter, comes from the expression velká noc, meaning “great night,” a reference to Jesus coming back from the dead. Despite the name, Easter here is not your typical religious affair. Seeing as the Czech Republic is one of the most secular countries in Europe, the country celebrates the coming of spring and warm weather and focuses less on the religious aspects of the holiday. Here’s our rundown of Czech Easter traditions and the best Easter markets.
It’s all about tradition... and whipping? For Easter, girls decorate kraslice (Easter Eggs) by hand with bright and colorful designs, from geometric patterns to floral scenes, made out of paint, straw and beeswax. Grandmothers, mothers and daughters decorate these eggs to pass off to young boys on Easter Monday. You’ll see a lot of the color red this holiday, since the color symbolizes health, happiness and the new life that the spring season brings. The name kraslice even comes from the Russian word for red. The boys only receive kraslice after lightly whipping the girls on their legs with pomlázka, basically a braided whip with ribbon decorations at the end. Yes, you read that right; girls get whipped and then give the boys a present as a thank you for the whipping. Legend has it, the pussywillow twigs the pomlázka are made out of bring health and youth to the girls for the remainder of the year.
It wouldn’t be a Czech holiday without endless markets
Easter Week
Ugly Wednesday (Škaredá středa)
Beginning on April 6, three of the largest markets will appear in the most popular areas of Prague to welcome the spring season. At Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square and Republic Square vendors will sell decorated eggs and handcrafted jewelry and ceramics, as well as host traditional dances, concerts and other entertainment. We recommend checking out the Old Town Square market with its flower-decorated stalls and egg decorating and candle making children’s activities. The best part of the markets is the food though. You can find all the traditional dishes here, like the lamb-shaped cake made from gingerbread, chocolate and sugar that became popular after the original meal of baked lamb was too scarce to find during the communist era. The markets are open every day from April 6 - 28 starting around 10 AM and going until the early evening. This includes Easter Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Named after the day Judas betrayed Jesus, Ugly Wednesday is traditionally known as spring cleaning day when school children finish school to begin decorating for Easter celebrations.
Visit the Náplavka Farmers’ Market for food and sunshine
Easter Monday (Pondělí velikonoční)
On April 20 from 8AM - 4PM walk along the beautiful Vltava down to the Náplavka Farmers’ Market for a special Easter market with some of the best traditional food and breathtaking views of Prague. From the lamb-shaped gingerbread and sweet bread called mazanec, to live hens laying eggs you can then decorate yourself, the riverside market is a beautiful way to celebrate the Easter holiday.
reen Thursday (Zelený čtvrtek) G and Good Friday (Velký pátek) Boys walk around their town or village shaking řehtačka (wooden rattles) in order to ward off Judas Iscariot, the disciple that betrayed Jesus in Christianity. The days are also spent fasting from meat and eating green foods instead, like spinach and cabbage, and even drinking green beer. White Saturday (Bílá sobota) The rattling continues, but this day boys go door to door shaking the řehtačka in hopes of receiving money from the residents, which they then split between themselves. Easter Sunday (Velikonoční neděle) In preparation for Easter Monday, girls decorate their kraslice if they haven’t already while the boys prepare their pomlázka.
This is the “day of pomlázka,” a national holiday which began as a pagan tradition meant to chase away evil spirits. The boys gently whip girls on the legs with the pomlázka, sometimes accompanied by a douse of water, in hopes of bringing them health, youth and fertilization in the year to come. They often recite Easter carols during the whipping. Once whipped the girls reward the boys with kraslice, candy or tie another ribbon around the boy’s pomlázka. The tradition is still upheld in small towns and villages, but it has lost its symbolic meaning over the years, now celebrated just for fun. Some women even replace the traditional rewards with money or shots of slivovice, the Czech plum brandy.

Cocktail guide & wine bar guide
The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Le Valmont 9)
Uhelný trh 9, Prague 1 levalmont.cz The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Miloš Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly. +420 224 267 266 for Reservations.
Schody Home Bar 7^
Zámecké schody 8, Prague 1 Recently opened bespoke cocktail bar and sister to one of our favorite cocktail places, Parlour. Located right on the stairs (schody) leading to the Prague Castle, it's hard to find but well worth the search. Once you're inside, tell the mixologist what flavors you like and he'll fix up your dream cocktail. No website, no number - it's a cozy hidden secret and they're trying to keep it that way.
Black Angel's 8#
Staroměstské náměstí 29, Prague 1 blackangels.cz Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations.
Bar and Books 8%
Mánesova 64, Prague 2 and Týnská 19, Prague 1 barandbooks.cz Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the casual hangout in Mánesova and slightly more formal experience in Týnská). Like its New York counterpart, the bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (mostly for visual aesthetics). Reservations online.
L'Fleur 9$
V kolkovně 5, Prague 1 lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with the 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which the bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Parlour 8$
Hemingway Bar 9!
parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations.
hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked around, Hemingway's Bar has already been recommended. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. Reservations are highly recommended. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
Krakovská 15, Prague 1
Crazy Daisy 9(
Václavské náměstí 4, Prague 1 crazydaisy.cz Somewhat hidden at the bottom of Wenceslas Square, this one of our favourite new hotspots. First Republic style interior, bar staff dressed the part and videomapping on the walls that pushes reality - it feels like you're in The Great Gatsby. +420 273 130 486 for Reservations.
Bugsy's 9%
Pařížská 10, Prague 1 bugsysbar.cz Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands of champagne and prosecco, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum. +420 224 810 287 for Reservations.
Tretter's 8@
V kolkovně 3, Prague 1 tretters.cz The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years, so it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations.
AnonymouS Bar 9# Michalská 12, Prague 1
anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile, the bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm. +420 608 280 069 for Reservations.
Alchemist Bar 9*
Provaznická 1, Prague 1 thealchemistbar.cz A relative newcomer on the scene, Alchemist is turning out quality prohibition style drinks in their ornate classically decorated location at the bottom of Wenceslas Square. +420 251 510 940 for Reservations.
Vinograf 8(
Karolíny Světlé 26, Prague 1
Cash Only Bar 8( Liliová 3, Prague 1
Senovážné náměstí 23, Prague 1 Míšeňská 8, Prague 1 vinograf.cz Vinograf Wine Bar stays up-to-date to ensure they only serve the very best. The everchanging wine selection is on an easy to use digital tablet – you’re guaranteed to find the perfect glass for you! There are two convenient locations to choose from, each with their own distinct personality, but both cozy and comfortable. This is our personal favorite when it comes to wine. +420 214 214 681 for Reservations.
cashonlybar.cz Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it—the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs.
Na břehu Rhôny 4$
Green Devil's Absinth Bar 7(
Tržiště 3, Prague 1
Týn 7, Prague 1
If you’re looking for an authentic and eclectic experience in absinth tasting, check out the Green Devil’s Absinth Bar in Old Town. The unique atmosphere accentuates the handcurated products; ranging from quality beverages to absinth-flavored ice cream. This location is a great place to spend an evening and learn about the history and culture of absinth. +420 728 326 344 for Reservations.
La Bodeguita del Medio 8) Kaprova 5, Prague 1
labodeguitadelmedio.cz With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. Located underneath Cohiba Atmosphere. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations
Cohiba Atmosphere 8! Kaprova 5, Prague 1
cohibaatmosphere.cz Referred to as the Havana of Prague, this cigar club is more than just premium cigars. Refined cocktails, and fine wine quality spirits are all served in this classy setting. The sleek design of the bar, combined with the top-notch service of the bartenders makes this the perfect spot for a quality drink. +420 224 818 373 for Reservations.
Deli Shop 9)
Křižíkova 66, Prague 8 deli-shop.cz Wine, high quality meats and cheeses and sandwiches all in the trendy neighborhood of Karlín.
Na Hrobci 1, Prague 2
nabrehurhony.cz Na břehu Rhôny is one of our favorite wine destinations. Pour your own French wines and keep track on a notepad. Delicious food platters are also available and the service is friendly and quick. +420 733 785 377 for Reservations.
U Staré studny 2& ustarestudny.cz Step into the luxurious wine bar and find every kind of unique wine, cognac, or champagne to sample with a tasting flight. They offer daily wine tastings, with at least six premium Czech wines to sample by the glass each day.
VELTLIN 4%
Křižíkova 115, Prague 8 veltlin.cz Our go-to when in the Karlín area, Veltlin offers a variety of Czech, Moravian, and Central European wines. The staff are great and the owner, Bogdan, is an award-winning Wine Guru (who is down to earth and friendly even with non-guru wine fans).
Vinotéka U Mouřenína 1( Tržiště 17, Prague 1
vinotekaumourenina.cz Cozy wine bar and shop with an excellent selection of wines at great prices for Malá Strana. You can also enjoy cheese and bread plates with your glasses of wine, perfect for a cozy evening with a friend or significant other.

The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and bestknown clubs. The venue was a popular theatre and ballroom in the 1920’s, but now you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and other modern styles on the dancefloor. When the club isn’t hosting a live DJ, it’s the spot for concerts and music festivals.

Grounds to help Mezičasy Cafe helps charity with every cup
Tucked away in a maze of winding streets in Old Town, Mezičasy Cafe serves coffee with a smile and a story. Located in the building where author Karolina Světlá grew up, the café is a warm and welcoming space, with tiny cacti in espresso cups decorating the tables and charming glass bottles filled with plants lining the walls. In the first room an espresso bar invites you to have a quick cup and go, but keep going and you’ll find a cozy room to slowly savor your coffee, appreciating the cobble-stoned streets through the lovely arched windows. The café boasts freshly baked cakes and pastries and daily made sandwiches with all fresh ingredients. Plus, there’s an ever-changing daily soup menu and a selection of wines and local beer. But the real story here is the coffee, and the non-profit it supports. “We know exactly who harvested, picked and washed it, from every farmer to every delivery guy,” says Jakub Seiner, Head Barista and PR Director for Mezičasy. “We know exactly what we are roasting and drinking.” Mezičasy’s roastery, Beansmith’s Specialty Coffee, is deeply connected to the raw nature of the bean. They select their coffee from mountainous environments for the best, mature flavors. Everything is hand-picked – no machinery taints the beans – and they roast it themselves at an old forge. Brand new machines at the café finish out the process and provide the perfect cup of coffee. “We want to not only serve amazing specialty coffee, but also the story behind the beans,” says Seiner. “Right now we serve brand new coffee from
Ethiopia. It’s not just coffee, not just brown beans – we approach it like you would a good wine or craft beer, sharing the story of the hard work behind it.” Seiner trains the baristas to care intensely about the specialty coffee they serve and the customers who enjoy it. “Our baristas are more trained than other cafés, we serve the best coffee we possibly can,” says Seiner. “We focus on the flavors and the service.” The result is a small team of baristas dedicated to creating the best coffee experience, not only caring about the story the coffee tells but also about making customers feel welcome. This has been a bit of a challenge, as Prague is not known for its friendly service and those who lived through the communism era are often wary of small talk. Mezičasy’s baristas want to make a connection with everyone who comes in, not just mindlessly serve them an impersonal cup of coffee. “You have to love coffee, then you can work on it and make it more visible and enjoyable for others,” says Seiner. “When you see the smiles when customers taste your latte, it warms up their heart, and yours.” About a year ago, Beansmith’s found this space next to the organization Život 90, which supports Prague’s elderly community, and realized the café and non-profit are a perfect fit – the café can share the stories of not only the coffee workers but also Prague’s elderly, helping both. The café fully opened last fall, with “specialty coffee and a social purpose.” It is now a space for young and elderly people to connect, whether it be over a cup of coffee or through the barista’s friendly service. Many of the baristas are also deeply
involved in Život 90, so the café has become a social haven for the elderly to enjoy personal connection with others. Since the 90s, Život 90 has helped Prague’s elderly live better lives. They provide therapists, counseling on social and legal matters, and services 24/7 with an emergency call line. Volunteers support the elderly in their homes, helping them run the household, get food, and keep up with hygiene. This way the elderly can remain as independent as possible and continue to live in their own homes, instead of having to move to an unfamiliar place. Profits from Mezičasy help Život 90 host events, such as lectures, discussions and singing sessions. Profits from the café also go towards providing healthcare and other necessities. The charming café attracts all ages, from supporters of Život 90 to those looking for a cozy spot to enjoy an amazing coffee. For Život 90, Mezičasy is a daily way to help people by spreading happiness. “A cup of coffee is a small part of your day you can share with your loved ones,” says Seiner. “They will remember those small moments forever.” Currently Mezičasy Cafe is fundraising for a new coffee machine, check out their website for how you can help and more about their cooperation with Život 90. Visit the cafe at Betlémská 5, Monday - Friday 8-21, Saturday 9-21 and Sunday 9-18. April 2019 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR

“Our restaurant descends from an era when celebration of life, culture, luxury, open mindedness, hospitality and happiness all put together were a must. We the two brothers at K have designed the décor of the restaurant in the spirit of what Kapurthala , a European holiday retreat could have looked like. K’s modernity is expressed through its ambience, music and fashionable spirit.”

BY Bektash Musa Kolja (1996) "Kolja (1996) is a Czech movie that won an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as multiple Czech Lions (the Czech equivalent of an Oscar). Directed by Jan Svěrák, the film stars his father, Zdeněk Svěrák, who also wrote the script based off a story by Pavel Taussig. The film follows the story of a middle-aged Czech cellist, Louka, struggling to make ends meet during the Soviet communist regime in Czechoslovakia after accidentally being 42
THE PRAGUE VISITOR | April 2019
black-listed by the regime. Through a series of events, Louka ends up taking care of a young boy and finding himself in the process. Zdeněk Svěrák is a beloved Czech actor, humorist and scriptwriter and one of the most well-known Czech personalities of the past century. His films The Elementary School and My Sweet Little Village were also Academy Awardnominated. In the Czech Republic, however, he is perhaps most known for his creation of Jára Cimrman with friend Ladislav Smoljak. Jára Cimrman is known as the greatest Czech who never lived. He is portrayed as a
universal genius, one of the greatest Czech playwrights,
poets,
composers,
teachers,
travellers, philosophers, inventors, detectives, mathematicians, and sportsmen that ever lived. Svěrák and Smoljak created the character as a joke in 1966 and went on to establish the Jára Cimrman theatre where the many plays they wrote about the character have been performed for decades (and are still almost always sold out). This was one of my best and most enjoyable shots ever. I had to wait a long time for the train to pass by to get the perfect shot.
