MARINA RISTORANTE
For dinner with a view Marina Ristorant can't be beat. On top of the gorgeous view of the Vltava and Prague Castle, the restaurant serves some of the best Italian cuisine in the city. The stationary boat turned restaurant does get busy, so you'll need to book ahead. Pro tip: right now, the sun sets early, so it's easier to get a table and a shot like the one we took here.
KAFKA STATUE
The eleven-meter-tall statue created by local artist David Černý is a technical marvel that’s already found internet fame. Its forty-two panels constantly rotate to align and create the face of famous Czech writer Franz Kafka. The statue can be found at Národní třída, tucked just behind the Quadrio Shopping Centre. If you like what you see, check out Černý's creepy "Babies" at Kampa Park.

CAFÉ SLAVIA
Slavia serves up plenty of romantic and nostalgicly idealistic moments. With massive glass windows overlooking passing trams and Prague Castle on one side and the National Theatre on the other, it's no wonder the café has been a favorite of artists and intellectuals. The Art Deco interior also boasts plenty of insta-moments, especially if there's live music from the tuxedo adorned pianist who is a fixture at the café.
FROM PRAGUE CASTLE
There's several ways to get to Prague Castle, but we recommend walking up the scenic Nerudova Street. One of the best shots can be found from the stairs walking up to the castle complex and looking back at Malá Strana, where you'll see the dome of Saint Nicholas Church peeking up over the cityscape. To find this spot, walk up Nerudova and turn right at Golden Star Hotel or take the stairs near the British Embassy.
Best Places IN PRAGUE TO
GRÉBOVKA AT HAVLÍČEK SADY
Sitting in a park and drinking wine is a popular spring and summer activity in the Czech Republic, but at the Grébovka Vineyard in Vinohrady it's a natural activity. In addition to the beautiful grounds of the Havlíček Gardens, the park houses a fully functioning vineyard which once served as the summer home of the industrialist Moritz Gröbe. There's also a pavilion with a café which serves up traditional Czech wines and a beautiful view of Prague's residential neighborhoods.
You know the basics already... Charles Bridge, the Astronomical Clock, the Lennon Wall, but here's our list of a few of our favorite places we've discovered over the past few years. So, grab your phone and happy Instagramming!
THE KLEMENTINUM LIBRARY
The Klementinum was founded in 1556 by the Jesuits. It houses over 20,000 rare books, but forget that - we're here for the eye candy. The buildings are unique in their Baroque-style structures that can’t be found in most places around the world. The library is consistently voted as one of the most beautiful in the world and is well-deserving of the title. Guided tours (in English) start at 10AM and begin every 30 minutes. THE UPSIDE DOWN HORSE
Another sculpture created by local artist David Černý, "In Utero" adorns Lucerna Palace's central atrium. The dead horse ridden by St. Wenceslas is an ironic twist on the St. Wenceslas statue in the square outside and is always a popular site to grab a photo or two. Pro tip: walk up the stairs to Lucerna's café and plan your picture while enjoying a cup of coffee in the historical passageway.
PRAGUE ZOO
Every major city has a zoo. But does every city have a zoo that’s ranked the 5th best in the world? Yeah, we didn’t think so. There’s a reason the Prague Zoo brags so many accolades. Located near the Trója Chateau in Prague 7, the zoo is home to nearly 5,000 animals, some of which can't be found in most parts of the world. The park itself is gorgeous with wandering paths overlooking Prague and the Vltava.
OLD TOWN BRIDGE TOWER
The view from the tower on the Old Town Bridge Tower is worth the 100kc charge, with views of Lesser Town.. Believe it or not, the trip up the stairs really isn't as bad as you might think. Pro Tip: Our two favorite times to take photos from here are early in the morning (around 9am or so) or right at sunset.
DANCING HOUSE
The Frank Ghery designed building has quite a few Insta-moments just in itself - especially if there's an exhibit happening in the gallery space. The panoramic terrace view at The Glass Bar is what makes this location so spectacular though, particularly at sunset. You'll have to buy a drink to go outside (we recommend the hot chocolate), but trust us, it's worth it.
LETNÁ BEER GARDEN
Perched high atop the city, the Letná Beer Garden comes alive as the weather warms up. Dozens of picnic tables sit underneath a canopy of trees with an incredible scenic view of the city. Beer is cheap and there's food carts to fuel your photo session. You'll usually find an eclectic mix of locals, tourists and expats all chatting, playing music or chilling out with their dogs.
KAMPA PARK
Yeah, yeah... you're thinking "Thanks, Captain Obvious," but hear us out. As you wander from Charles Bridge towards Kampa, you'll likely go past the tree lined area of Na Kampě. When you get just past a hotel called "Archibald By Charles Bridge," hang a left to the river side. You'll find swans hanging out and an incredible view of Charles Bridge. This is one of our favorite secret photo spots.
VYŠEHRAD
We've said it before and we'll say it again - Vyšehrad is underrated. The complex houses arguably the most significant Christian Church in the Czech Republic. More importantly, though, is the castle which was built in 925 AD and took more than 525 years to build. The cemetery here is home to countless significant Czech heroes, including Antonín Dvořák, Alphonse Mucha, and Karel Čapek. The complex is tranquil and tourist-free.
MALÁ STRANA
It may actually mean Lesser Town, but when it comes to photographic moments, Malá Strana is tops. We think it's insta-worthy any time, but we suggest wandering through the quaint district at night when the tourists have gone (it's safe, don't worry). Winding historical cobblestoned streets and amazing views of the castle provide wonderful, and romantic, photo opportunities.
PETŘÍN TOWER
Also known as “Prague’s Eiffel Tower,” the Petřín Tower is surrounded by rose gardens and on a clear day provides a breathtaking view of Prague and all its ancient churches, castles and beautiful architecture. On the clearest of days you can even see the highest point in all of the Czech Republic - Sněžka. You can also check out the nearby mirror maze for some unique selfie opportunities.

PRAGUE
Cocktail guide & wine bar guide
The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Le Valmont 9)
Uhelný trh 9, Prague 1 levalmont.cz The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Miloš Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly. +420 224 267 266 for Reservations.
Schody Home Bar 7^
Zámecké schody 8, Prague 1 Recently opened bespoke cocktail bar and sister to one of our favorite cocktail places, Parlour. Located right on the stairs (schody) leading to the Prague Castle, it's hard to find but well worth the search. Once you're inside, tell the mixologist what flavors you like and he'll fix up your dream cocktail. No website, no number - it's a cozy hidden secret and they're trying to keep it that way.
Black Angel's 8#
Staroměstské náměstí 29, Prague 1 blackangels.cz Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations.
Bar and Books 8%
Mánesova 64, Prague 2 and Týnská 19, Prague 1 barandbooks.cz Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the casual hangout in Mánesova and slightly more formal experience in Týnská). Like its New York counterpart, the bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (mostly for visual aesthetics). Reservations online.
L'Fleur 9$
V kolkovně 5, Prague 1 lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with the 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which the bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Parlour 8$
Hemingway Bar 9!
parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations.
hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked around, Hemingway's Bar has already been recommended. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. Reservations are highly recommended. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
Krakovská 15, Prague 1
Crazy Daisy 9(
Václavské náměstí 4, Prague 1 crazydaisy.cz Somewhat hidden at the bottom of Wenceslas Square, this one of our favourite new hotspots. First Republic style interior, bar staff dressed the part and videomapping on the walls that pushes reality - it feels like you're in The Great Gatsby. +420 273 130 486 for Reservations.
Bugsy's 9%
Pařížská 10, Prague 1 bugsysbar.cz Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands of champagne and prosecco, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum. +420 224 810 287 for Reservations.
Tretter's 8@
V kolkovně 3, Prague 1 tretters.cz The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years, so it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations.
AnonymouS Bar 9# Michalská 12, Prague 1
anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile, the bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm. +420 608 280 069 for Reservations.
Alchemist Bar 9*
Provaznická 1, Prague 1 thealchemistbar.cz A relative newcomer on the scene, Alchemist is turning out quality prohibition style drinks in their ornate classically decorated location at the bottom of Wenceslas Square. +420 251 510 940 for Reservations.
Karolíny Světlé 26, Prague 1
Cash Only Bar 8( Liliová 3, Prague 1
Vinograf 8(
Senovážné náměstí 23, Prague 1 Míšeňská 8, Prague 1 vinograf.cz Vinograf Wine Bar stays up-to-date to ensure they only serve the very best. The everchanging wine selection is on an easy to use digital tablet – you’re guaranteed to find the perfect glass for you! There are two convenient locations to choose from, each with their own distinct personality, but both cozy and comfortable. This is our personal favorite when it comes to wine. +420 214 214 681 for Reservations.
cashonlybar.cz Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it—the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs.

This location is a great place to spend an evening and learn about the history and culture of absinth. +420 728 326 344 for Reservations.
La Bodeguita del Medio 8) Kaprova 5, Prague 1
labodeguitadelmedio.cz With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. Located underneath Cohiba Atmosphere. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations
Cohiba Atmosphere 8! Kaprova 5, Prague 1
cohibaatmosphere.cz Referred to as the Havana of Prague, this cigar club is more than just premium cigars. Refined cocktails, and fine wine quality spirits are all served in this classy setting. The sleek design of the bar, combined with the top-notch service of the bartenders makes this the perfect spot for a quality drink. +420 224 818 373 for Reservations.
Deli Shop 9)
Křižíkova 66, Prague 8 deli-shop.cz Wine, high quality meats and cheeses and sandwiches all in the trendy neighborhood of Karlín.
Na Hrobci 1, Prague 2
nabrehurhony.cz Na břehu Rhôny is one of our favorite wine destinations. Pour your own French wines and keep track on a notepad. Delicious food platters are also available and the service is friendly and quick. +420 733 785 377 for Reservations.
U Staré studny 2& ustarestudny.cz Step into the luxurious wine bar and find every kind of unique wine, cognac, or champagne to sample with a tasting flight. They offer daily wine tastings, with at least six premium Czech wines to sample by the glass each day.
VELTLIN 4%
Křižíkova 115, Prague 8 veltlin.cz Our go-to when in the Karlín area, Veltlin offers a variety of Czech, Moravian, and Central European wines. The staff are great and the owner, Bogdan, is an award-winning Wine Guru (who is down to earth and friendly even with non-guru wine fans).

“Our restaurant descends from an era when celebration of life, culture, luxury, open mindedness, hospitality and happiness all put together were a must. Chocotopia
Part chocolate museum, part wax house, part candy store, and all fun.
By Sarah Jackson What do chocolate and wax figurines of your favorite celebrities have in common? You can find them both at Chocotopia just off of Old Town Square. The storefront of Celetná 15 greets visitors with a wax statue of Albert Einstein, but peek inside and you’ll see what looks like a confectionary paradise straight out of Candy Land. A wispy white tree dangles colorful candy-like ornaments from its branches. Just a few feet away, you’re jolted into a tropical jungle, under a canopy of cacao trees in Chocotopia’s restaurant. The sounds of flowing water and birds overhead will round out the full tropical experience of a cacao plantation in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. But the real fun happens upstairs. Chocotopia wasn’t always such an eclectic mix of entertainment. It began as ChocoStory, a chain of chocolate stores that originated in Bruges, Belgium, just down the block at Celetná 10 in 2008. Along the way, the store opened its own chocolate museum. Last year, ten years after opening, the store merged with Grévin Wax Museum and Chocotopia, the half-chocolate wonderland, half-wax museum, was born. Henk Mestdagh, who opened Prague’s ChocoStory, now serves as general manager of Chocotopia. Currently the museum sources all the raw materials that go into their chocolate from Mestdagh’s native Belgium. “The red line is always chocolate for us,” says
Mestdagh. “Anything we do must have a touch of chocolate.” The third floor certainly has its fair share of the tasty sweet. Here you’re welcomed to the chocolate museum with free chocolate buttons from the likes of Belgium, Costa Rica and Vanuatu. Although the wax museum is one floor below, there’s no shortage of wax figurines throughout the history exhibit. As you weave through cutouts of cacao trees, you’ll find a figurine of a man working on a cacao plantation and one of a Spanish captain planning an import of cacao to Europe. You can read up on how chocolate is produced from bean to bar and see collections of chocolate molds, pots and cups. When you’re done, visit the demo area to watch (and sample!) chocolate being made. Or, for a more hands-on experience, you can try making your own treats in a workshop, such as chocolate bars or Belgian karaxes. On the second floor in the Wax Museum of Legends, you’ll find uncanny look-alikes of national and global celebrities, including mainstream pop culture figures from Katy Perry and Elvis Presley to Marilyn Monroe and John Lennon. (True to form, the room also has wax models of various desserts.) The wax museum also celebrates Czech figures, with a room dedicated to popular Czech athletes and another area showcasing characters from Czech folklore tales. There you’ll see a water goblin, an executioner, the mythical monster Golem and the door of Dr. Faust. Incorporating local legends, Mestdagh says, was important in the design of the wax museum.
“We have the educational part in the history of cacao,” says Mestdagh. “I also wanted to give some historical or interesting information about figurines. … So that’s why we think it’s important to give people also the educational part. If they want to learn about culture and heritage of the country, they can also see something like that.” The final room has recreations of a handful of political figures, including the Czech Republic’s first president Václav Havel and Queen Elizabeth II. Mestdagh is trying to amp up the museums, bringing some advanced technologies into the equation to create a more interactive experience for visitors. Besides its workshops and a newly opened evening school about chocolate-making, Chocotopia now offers guests the chance to purchase a 360-degree virtual reality experience for that will transport them back in time to the fifteenth century in the Yucatan Peninsula to come along on an explorer’s discovery of chocolate drinks. This year, Chocotopia even debuted special boxes of chocolate that come to life (think leopards, birds and other animals from a cacao plantation popping off a box) thanks to an augmented reality feature available in the store’s app. Stripped down though, without all the hightech experiences, the company’s simple roots are still pretty sweet. “My aim is to get people into Chocotopia in general,” says Mestdagh. “As long as they have a good experience, and that was buying one lollipop or one piece of chocolate, I think we succeeded.” March 2019 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR

Palace). The palace was designed by architect Max Spielmann for merchant banker Julius Petschek in the 1920s and was one of the most modern buildings in Prague at the time. The space is most known, however, as the headquarters of the Gestapo during WWII. Many interrogations and torturings of the Czech Resistance happened here. At the end of the street you'll find the beautiful Prague State Opera building (Státní opera), previously known as Smetana Theatre after famed Czech composer Bedřich Smetana. Opened in 1888, the opera hosted renowned composers and singers, such as Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Enrico Caruso. The opera is now part of the
National Theatre and holds opera and ballet productions in the breathtaking performance hall. Turn to the right and you’ll end up at the newly renovated National Museum overlooking Prague’s vibrant Wenceslas Square. Turkish photographer Bektash Musa fell in love with Prague at first sight. A fan of media, Musa also wanted to show the world the beauty of the city through the eyes of directors who filmed here, pairing photos of actual places with scenes from movies, television shows, documentaries and music video where they were originally shot.
