Prague’s nine day extravaganza of English-language theatre, comedy, cabaret and more. Fringe festivals find their roots in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1947, a small, bold group of theatre companies decided to crash the Edinburgh International Festival and perform in the surrounding areas. These artists were driven to build a community where all types of audiences and performers were welcome. This spirit remains at the heart of the worldwide Fringe community today. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe has grown from those eight initial companies to thousands of performances over a three-week period and now it’s gone global. There are Fringe festivals from Perth, Australia to Paris, France; from Bergen, Norway to Brighton, England. Prague joined the landscape in 2002, with this year marking the 18th annual Prague Fringe Festival.

CZECH MICRO-BREWERY BEERS ON TAP
Six years ago, in Prague, the capital of beer, only handful of Czech beers was being represented. We left the capital and spent time in the villages around the entire country, searching for the best regional craft beers. Our dream was to bring all these great breweries to Prague. Thus, we founded Prague Beer Museum, a place to bring the best beers we found.

Laterna Magika
Translating to Magic Lantern, Laterna magika blends contemporary dance with music, film elements and video-mapping light projections to explore and amplify thought-provoking themes. “Contemporary dance is a means of communication. It works more with emotions and is more for explaining or expressing feelings,” says Pavel Knolle, Head of the Artistic Ensemble of Laterna magika. “There is more freedom of movement. There are no borders, no definitions of what contemporary can or cannot be, it embraces all styles - everything is possible on the stage.” The performances often bend reality and make the audience question their own eyes, with dancers seeming to be held in giant hands, almost falling off of cliffs or disappearing only to instantly reappear as a projection. It becomes difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is simply a screen. Each show uses these mind-bending elements to portray distinct messages and thoughtprovoking themes. “The Garden is about grown-up people who go back to some secret place they knew as kids and start remembering what they found so interesting here as children,” says Knolle. “It’s about trying to see the world through children’s eyes again.” The projections in The Garden show what is going on in the minds of the dancers, essentially recreating the imaginative scenes they created there when they were children. The base of the video-mapping scenes in the show are hand-
drawn illustrations of floral scenes and fantastical creatures. The projections in Cube, on the other hand, were made entirely digitally, except for a few film elements. “Cube is absolutely abstract,” says Knolle. “There is no storyline, it is surreal. You have to figure it out yourself, it is about your emotions and what your memories and dreams are about. The inspiration comes from everything in the modern world resembling a cube, it is an object we use or see hundreds of times a day, you can even be in the cube, in a box! So the creators were playing with this concept.” Human Locomotion differs from the other shows in the contemporary dance repertoire in that it is roughly based on the life of Eadweard Muybridge, known for his photographic studies of motion. Inspired by their shared exploration of the connection between film, photography and movement, the show uses Muybridge’s original photographs in the performance - including his famous images of a horse running. “Everything - the music, the set, the costumes - it’s all combined so directly, you can’t imagine the performance to work without one of these parts,” says Knolle. “And of course the principle is that every part of all those aspects has to have some meaning. We don’t use technology just because it’s fashionable, new or interesting. We look for the meaning and then find the best solution and equipment - the technology is just a means of
communication.” Laterna came to be after the Czechoslovak government commissioned a display of Czechoslovak culture for the 1958 Brussels Expo. According to co-creator Josef Svoboda, Laterna aims to explore “the relationship between actions on the screen and on the stage scene” and to “multiply relations by combining various screening surfaces.” Connecting the different mediums is not an easy task. After painstakingly creating the projections and film footage, the company often has to entirely re-work parts of the performances once they combine it with the choreography and music. The entire process takes over a year. The company is fluid, with a core group of dancers often accompanied by new additions to keep the performances as creative and explorative as possible. The artists, directors and choreographers change with the show as well. Sometimes they collaborate closely and other times the artists simply bring the director and choreographer’s visions to life. “We are living in a world of illusions and media and we at Laterna can stress this point, to let people know the world is full of illusions and we have to be aware of it,” says Knolle. “The most important thing is not to have beautiful movement, but meaningful movement.” May 2019 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR

honest guide: The book
pRague's favorite youtubers go to print By Bridie O'Connell
Sitting packed inside their favorite bar, famous YouTuber duo Janek Rubeš and Honza Mikulka reflect on some of their fondest filmmaking memories. “I would never have believed it would grow into this, man,” Rubeš said to his co-creator Mikulka. After two years of success and over 30,000 subscribers on YouTube, Rubeš, 31, and Mikulka, 27, are branching out to a new medium: print. But unlike other guidebooks, the one that they’re creating will also include Prague’s pitfalls, tourist traps, and places to avoid at all costs. “You can’t hold a YouTube channel in your hand,” said Rubeš, when asked how the book will be different from the duo’s videos. “I just can’t wait to be able to go up to someone and say, ‘Look, touch it!’” Creating a guidebook to their home city has been a project long in the works for Rubeš and Mikulka, and everything seemed to fall into place when their friend Eliška Podzimková, 27, approached them to collaborate. When her publisher asked Czech illustrator and photographer Podzimková to create a guidebook to Prague, she responded that she did not want to create it alone, because she “already knew two guys doing a wonderful job” and decided to ask them to create the print guide with her. “We had meetings with so many people, and
always after five minutes we were so bored,” said Mikulka. The book, which includes 50 tips on what to see and do in Prague, is about 120 pages long, with each location described with an image, illustration, and descriptive text. Many spots in the guide also include QR code links to corresponding YouTube videos on the Honest Guide channel. One of Podzimkova’s iconic images demonstrates the creativity readers will find in the upcoming book. The illustration, drawn on an image of Prague’s eye catching Dancing House, makes the building look like a cocktail, pointing out to readers that the building contains a bar on the eighth floor with an “epic view,” said Podzimková. One of the book’s most notable features is what illustrator Podzimková calls “folly pages,” clear pages which, when held over images, point out spots to avoid. Another notable feature: no directions. “Our guide book is mostly self dependent, meaning the reader will have to do the job to find the place,” said Milkova. “At the beginning of the book, we say to download Google Maps or Maps.cz, then it’s all up to you.” One of Prague’s most touristy streets, Mostecká, is “filled with bullshit,” according to Rubeš. The book, containing no paid content or advertising, is not afraid to point out which places to avoid around the city. “There are guide books that have phone numbers for places,” said Rubeš. “They charge you 30
fucking dollars, and then tell you a place’s website, telephone number, and the opening hours.” Available in Czech and English, the group hopes the guidebook will be interesting to both tourists and residents. It is available on their website Honest.blog, and will potentially become available at bookstores or at the airport depending on its initial success. And what’s next? Rubeš imagines releasing a second guide book, this one just for scams. “Scam guide to Prague” After meeting twelve years ago while both filming videos in Prague, Janek Rubes and Honza Mikulka are recognized around Prague and have a global audience under the YouTube channel: Honest Guide. When they met, both were working for Stream.cz, the Czech version of YouTube. They now work for Seznam.cz, the Czech Republic’s search engine, more popular than Google in the country. Seznam pays them to make videos about whatever they want, as long as they keep uploading. Honest Guide, Rubes and Mikulka’s current venture, has over 300,000 subscribers and is viewed by fans from around the world. It’s especially useful to expats living in Prague and tourists planning trips to the city, as Rubes and Mikulka’s mission is to point out tourist traps as well as give tips for spots. music in pictures
Galerie La Femme, a tiny, two-room art space on Bilkova street in Old Town, is crammed with work by both emerging and esteemed local Czech artists that pays homage to femininity, among a range of other topics. The gallery also plays a direct part in the creation of art through its “Homework” project. It’s exactly what it sounds like: Galerie La Femme offers artists a yearly homework assignment, in which they create a work of art based on a specific theme. Now going on 25 Assignments, this season's assignment is "music". Here is a small sampling of the pieces submiited by the artists. See these and more at the gallery, just across from the InterContinental Prague.

Cocktail guide & wine bar guide
The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Le Valmont 9)
Uhelný trh 9, Prague 1 levalmont.cz The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Miloš Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly. +420 224 267 266 for Reservations.
Schody Home Bar 7^
Zámecké schody 8, Prague 1 Recently opened bespoke cocktail bar and sister to one of our favorite cocktail places, Parlour. Located right on the stairs (schody) leading to the Prague Castle, it's hard to find but well worth the search. Once you're inside, tell the mixologist what flavors you like and he'll fix up your dream cocktail. No website, no number - it's a cozy hidden secret and they're trying to keep it that way.
Black Angel's 8#
Staroměstské náměstí 29, Prague 1 blackangels.cz Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations.
Bar and Books 8%
Mánesova 64, Prague 2 and Týnská 19, Prague 1 barandbooks.cz Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the casual hangout in Mánesova and slightly more formal experience in Týnská). Like its New York counterpart, the bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (mostly for visual aesthetics). Reservations online.
L'Fleur 9$
V kolkovně 5, Prague 1 lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with the 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which the bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Parlour 8$
Hemingway Bar 9!
parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations.
hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked around, Hemingway's Bar has already been recommended. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. Reservations are highly recommended. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.

Ten Years of Naplavka
Celebrating its 10th birthday this year, Prague’s iconic Náplavka farmers market at Rašínova nábřeží in Prague 2 has become a staple for residents and a tasty attraction for tourists, attracting hundreds of annual visitors for local produce and Czech specialties. Nearly 100 vendors sell their produce, cheese, desserts, and more at the market which runs between February and December each year, started in 2010 by organizer Jiří Sedláček. He also runs two other popular markets: Heřmaňák, located at Řezáčovo náměstí, and Kubáň, located at Kubánské náměstí. “The market Náplavka, celebrating it 10th season this year, is favourite among tourists due to its convenient location in the city center at the river banks and due to stunning views of Prague’s castles it offers,” said Sedláček. “It surely is well-known on social media, in tourist guides and agency offices.” The three Prague farmers markets started by Sedláček, Náplavka, Heřmaňák, and Kubáň, are each different in their own way. Heřmaňák market is nestled in an artsy Prague 7 district called “Little Berlin,” where the customers are almost totally residents. Kubáň market, a little larger, runs two days a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. And the largest, Náplavka, is more touristy because of its central location in the city and is one of the largest markets in the Czech Republic, according to Sedláček. Farmers markets in Prague have gained popularity for their authentic Czech products and seasonal produce. Along with produce, customers can try traditional Czech food such as a poppy seed frgale, a sweet yeast bread topped with streusel; or one of the many varieties of Czech sausage, from klobása to utopenci to párek, often eaten inside the popular Czech bread rohlík.
According to Sedláček, many find the market experience more fulfilling than just visiting the supermarket because the farmers markets provide a sense of community, where one can meet with friends and chat over a drink in addition to shopping. In addition, the markets provide the opportunity to speak directly with producers and sellers of goods, where they can learn about where produce is grown, how cheese is made, and even try samples of products before buying to make sure they like them. The products are also fresher, not needing preservatives to keep them from spoiling while sitting on transport trucks or grocery store shelves. “What lures our customers is authenticity, clear origin, freshness and the direct contact with the producer,” said Sedláček. “Moreover, the market also naturally serves as a meeting point for the community. Hence, there’s more to it than shopping: it’s a social event, too.” Live music and charity projects play into the social aspect of the event. Musicians and bands regularly play at Náplavka, and occasionally at Heřmaňák and the Kubáň, according to Sedláček. One of the first bands to play at the markets was The Brownies, a Prague based Jazz trio. “Live music on the market is definitely a cultural contribution and thus a contribution to the community,” said Sedláček. “We believe it contributes to an authentic atmosphere on the market as well as it supports music start-ups and buskers.” The markets provide stands located at the entrances of the markets to charity projects and humanitarian organizations, including Arnika, Animal Defenders, Salvation Army, Greenpeace, Homeless Cooks and many more.
Sedláček serves as the current president of the Czech Association for Farmers Markets, which he founded in 2012, which works to support the development of farmers markets across the country. The markets’ sustainability initiative started last year, when they began offering reusable cold beverage cups. This March, the market began offering reusable warm beverage cups, which can be returned to any coffee shop participating in the reusable cup program. Sedláček’s markets also now only serve food products on dishes made from natural products or customer’s own containers. “Plastics are a globally-recognized problem. That is why we decided to lead by example and remove plastics on our markets and replace them with paper bags and or compostable materials,” said Sedláček. “At the beginning of this year, we‘ve removed plastic and disposable cups for hot drinks. Customers bring their own “KeepCups” and can also use the “turn cup” system, which is a system of returnable cups used by a lot of subjects, mainly cafés, around Prague.” Before farmers markets began in the Czech Republic, Sedláček says small-scale food production and open-air markets vanished because “Czechoslovakia was dominated heavily by strong international corporations,” making it difficult for local farmers to compete. Ten years ago, he wanted to shift the perception of local goods being of lesser quality and distrusted by the public. He says now vendors and customers take more pride in domestic goods than he’s ever seen. “We’d like to keep maintaining and cultivating markets so all parties involved can benefit from it as well as keep raising awareness about benefits of markets through education,” said Sedláček. Museum Kampa U Sovových mlýnů 2, Prague 1 Naděžda Plíšková (1934-1999) was one of the most notable artists of the afterwar period in Czechoslovakia. Her preferred area of creation were mostly large-scale graphic prints and objects, at first influenced by surrealism, later by pop-art and new realism, whose form she transformed into a specific simplified and abbreviated form. BY Bektash Musa G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) tells the story of an elite military unit of special operatives known as the G.I Joe working to take down an evil organization lead by a notorious arms dealer. With stars like Channing Tatum from 21 Jump Street and Ray Park from Star Wars: Phantom Menace, it doesn’t get more action packed than this. What’s great about these movies is their ability to take you all over the world to exotic locations you’ve either never been to or heard of, just like the James Bond 42

franchise. One of those locations happens to be right in the heart of Old Town in Prague. In a scene with Marlon Wayans (who plays Ripcord in the film) about midway through the film, Prague’s very own Danube House can be seen in the background. More specifically, right behind Wayans is the back exterior of the building. Fun fact, the design of the building is modeled after the shape of a similar office complex called the Chilehaus in Hamburg, Germany. Built in the 1920 by German architect Fritz Hoger, the style of both buildings is of Brick Expressionism, a variant of expressionist architecture popular in the early 20th century. Interestingly, most of the cast members had
little knowledge of G.I Joe before filming, except for Dennis Quaid’s (Who plays General Hawk in the film) son whose fascination of the franchise convinced him to take on the role. Other cast members like Ray Park (who plays Snake Eyes in the film) had fond childhood members of playing with G.I Joe action figures. Park recalled having a Snake Eyes action figure as a kid, little did he know he’d grow up to play the samurai-wielding ninja himself decades later. The Danube House can be found right outside the Florenc Metro stop in Prague 1.
