Letter from the Head of School —
“We are all truly fortunate to be a part of a community created by generations of Prairie educators.”
Dear Prairie Community, The Prairie School’s 51st year was truly exceptional, as our students excelled in every aspect of their lives. Our classrooms vibrated with energy as students solved problems, learned new skills, completed complex explorations and experiments, engaged in civil discourse, debated issues, studied other cultures, researched current and historic issues, gave presentations, and wrote countless essays. Our 67 seniors earned a record $10.5 million in college scholarships. We put on more than two dozen exceptional art shows and performances. Our athletic teams won the Lighthouse Trophy as the top athletic program in Racine County along with State Championships in girls’ golf and girls’ soccer. Our students performed countless hours of community service and continued important traditions like our holiday party for mentally disabled adults. Our alumni continue to excel in almost every imaginable career, in communities all around the world. From organic farming to space exploration, from the arts to the professions, from first responders and civil servants to CEOs, our alumni are leaders in their fields living lives of purpose and curiosity.
administration are dedicated to helping every student grow to be his or her best self. Prairie teachers strive to add value every day to each student’s growth and development as a scholar, artist, athlete, and leader. We are all truly fortunate to be a part of a community created by generations of Prairie educators. The philanthropy reflected in this report is also due to the tremendous efforts of the Prairie faculty and the loyalty their work inspires. This report of giving is designed to help us say thank you and recognize the 1,065 gifts Prairie received from our many generous supporters last year. Annual contributions to the Prairie Fund are up 48% over the last two years and this success has allowed us to complete a few long-needed projects, including new HVAC control systems and the restoration of our reinvigorated greenhouse. Fundraising has also allowed us to add a new science faculty member and a retreat for 7th and 8th grade students.
Some of the most dedicated members of our community are the volunteers who led The Prairie Fund and organized and produced the Golf Classic and Prairie Premiere. The faculty Our faculty also thrived. There are no limits to what can be achieved at Prairie. This is something Ben Isaacson ’96 believed as a student, and now as a Prairie parent with a daughter, Eliana, in kindergarten, it’s a mindset he still possesses today. Having attended from 1st through 12th grade, Isaacson was a TPS lifer who enjoyed the opportunities to learn and grow academically. Introverted and quiet by nature, he began accelerating in math upon entering Middle School. In the fifth grade he was placed in Mr. Huizinga’s seventh grade class. “He not only explained things thoroughly,” Isaacson recalls, “but took the time to explain why we were doing it.” He continued at an advanced pace through his junior (AP Calculus) and senior year (a course at UW-Parkside), and following graduation he attended Northwestern University, where he double majored in Computer Science and Integrated Sciences. These pursuits helped direct him to his chosen career as a programmer and systems analyst with SC Johnson where he had, while at Prairie, spent time interning in Information Services. Aware of how influential Prairie was in his life, Isaacson started giving back shortly after college. “Prairie influenced me even more than Northwestern,” he says. “Another part of it was the thought that someday I might send my own kids to Prairie.” Today, the eldest of Isaacson’s four children, Eliana, is here and that brings her dad back to campus on a regular basis. “It’s amazing to see how much it’s grown,” he says. “It’s much bigger, but it’s still… the same.” The possibilities of what students can achieve keeps him giving to the school every year, and he encourages fellow alumni and parents to contribute so Prairie continues to be a great school – the place that taught him there were no limits to what he could achieve.

Giving Honor Roll —
Dear Friends, As both an alumnus and parent of a Prairie 7th and 2nd grader, this school is very important and meaningful to me. It was an exciting day when I enrolled my son in Early School nine years ago, knowing he would be met with passionate educators and rich, stimulating opportunities to explore and grow. The critical elements of a strong education rely on the generous support of our community, as tuition alone does not cover the costs to operate The Prairie School. Your generous gifts impact the lives of the students and faculty every day by enhancing access to technology, materials, and facilities that transform instruction. This past year, parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends of Prairie demonstrated their belief in The Prairie School by giving at record levels. I am consistently amazed by the generosity all of you show. I, as well as the entire Prairie community, thank you for your commitment to our students! Sincerely,
Darryl Babu ’88 2015-2016 Prairie Fund Chair

After having moved to Singapore for four years, Shakila Manogaran Shimp ’86 returned to Racine and enrolled in Upper School as a “Shy, quiet girl who was behind in some subjects.” Teachers met with her before and after school to help her improve and excel, and her parents, both educators, supported her every step of the way. Interested in Human Resources because of her desire to help others, the educators at Prairie taught her how to organize and prioritize, how to persevere with determination, and how to excel at public speaking through mock trial, debate, and Model OAS. Shakila’s experience as a student is only one reason she volunteers and serves as a P.O.P. Guide and on the Board of Trustees. She and her husband, Doug, are the proud parents of Nathan ’16, now at Purdue University, and Kiran ’22, currently in 7th grade, and they love what the school has done for both of their children. “Prairie engages students with opportunities to learn new things,” she says. “My son learned to blow glass, performed in MS musicals and was an US athlete and tutor – all because he wanted to explore these things. My daughter performed in the PS choir and musicals in MS and loves learning Mandarin. Such opportunities help our students to become well-rounded for future success.” After achieving her MS in Human Resources Management, Shakila realized her high school goal of helping others when, at twenty-seven, she became the youngest HR Healthcare Executive in Milwaukee. She spent the next 15 years as an executive in large healthcare companies before eventually deciding to consult part-time so she could spend more time with her family and give back to Prairie.
Shakila began volunteering in her children’s classrooms by organizing parties and chaperoning field trips. She was a team mom for Nathan’s varsity soccer team and continues to serve on the P.O.P. (Promote/Organize/ Provide) leadership committee, which brings Prairie families together through various events. “Any way you volunteer,” Shakila explains, “it cultivates our community, bringing us closer together to enrich our students and school.” On top of all this, Shakila serves as a Trustee and has utilized her professional contacts to build the Corporate Partnership Program, helping to increase Prairie’s visibility in southeastern Wisconsin. She believes the Board’s role is to “Make sure the school is fulfilling the mission, vision, and values it stands for.” Volunteering, which is what Shakila considers the heart of the school, also impacts every individual. “Prairie students learn servant leadership, whether it’s going to a soup kitchen or sharing their academic or artistic talents,” she says. “It’s part of the mission. You’re a leader in the community if you serve others.”

DONOR PROFILE:
In 2001, however, Gorton decided he wanted to do more than just an annual gift. Working for a software security startup, he realized that the quality of the candidates coming in to interview was plummeting because of a general lack of scientific knowledge and computing skills. When the startup was acquired by much a larger company, he found himself with the means to address this issue.
RICHARD GORTON ’78
SOFTWARE ENGINEER
— By Dominic Inouye From data to coding to clouds, computer technology is constantly evolving. The industry is a speedy, cutthroat place, and those hoping to achieve success must remain determined in times of adversity. Richard Gorton ’78 has done more than just achieve success. He’s built a brilliant career on determination and resiliency, attributes he first refined during his days at Prairie. It was here he discovered aptitudes for math and computer science, and fell in love with BASIC (Beginner’s All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) in a ninth grade science class. “I latched onto the programming so hard that I actually purchased the manual for BASIC for the computer we had access to via a 110 Baud Acoustic modem at Johnson Wax,” says Gorton. After Prairie, he took a while to settle on the University of Wisconsin-Parkside where he studied computer science. From there, he moved to Boston in 1985 and spent the next several years working for a variety of
“It was a case of put your money where your mouth is,” he says. companies and startups including DEC/ Compaq, Cisco and AMD. Today, he works with tools and enablers that allow applications to run on new platforms. Gorton believes the breadth of education offered him at Prairie, as well as his resilience as a student, helped him succeed after college. While some of the startups failed, all of them helped him become a better engineer by increasing his skills portfolio and networking abilities. Through it all, Gorton has made it a priority to give back to the place that helped him begin honing his computer skills. “I’ve always been grateful, and because of this I’ve tried to contribute every year to the Prairie Fund,” he says. “I think I started giving shortly after I entered the workforce in 1985.”
Gorton worked with Prairie to establish the Gorton Endowment for the Sciences; he also created the CS100 Computer Science Endowment at UW-Parkside. And now, thanks to a plaque that hangs in the school’s science wing, future generations of Prairie students will be reminded of Gorton’s commitment to the school. “It’s amazing and I’m flattered to the extreme,” a humble Gorton says of the recognition. “I am of the belief that this country needs to strengthen the focus on sciences and engineering in order to remain competitive. The Prairie experience has clearly shaped me, and I hold true to John Mitchell’s catchphrase, ‘Remember who you are, and what you represent’.”

The Prairie Premiere
Unlocking Possibilities. That was the theme of Premiere 2016, an unforgettable evening that netted $201,600 for the tuition assistance fund. Over 460 guests – a record high – enjoyed vibrant decor, an elegant meal and one of a kind auction items. Once again, Prairie’s signature event was made possible because of the tireless efforts of the leadership team, the willingness of the volunteers, and the generosity of the attendees.

TEACHERS THAT INSPIRE GREATNESS —
This past summer, like several before, PAT BADGER, Advisor to the Head of School for Arts and Equity, instructed a recorder ensemble at The Clearing Folk School in Ellison Bay, Wisconsin. Founded by Jens Jensen, noted landscape architect, The Clearing attracts adult students from across the country. This past season, Pat engaged her class in commissioning, shepherding and premiering the new composition, Dody’s Oats. Created by Glen Shannon, noted recorder player and composer, Oats has a quasi-Latin feel with a sparkling soprano. “Making music in community doesn’t mean only sitting behind a music stand,” says Badger. “By imaging and creating together, who knows how many people we touch.” Dody’s Oats is available for purchase at glenshannonmusic.com.
ALAN MILLS, Middle School Social Studies Teacher and
Department Chair, utilized a Senior Grant from Prairie to visit a number of National Parks during National Parks Service Centennial in August. Mills and his family visited seven different National Parks in the span of two weeks, including Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Fort Clatsop – Lewis and Clark National Park, Crater Lake, Alcatraz Island, Muir Woods National Monument, Sequoia and King’s Canyon National Parks and Yosemite National Park. “For years I’ve taught eighth graders about the importance of environmental stewardship, using National Parks as the best example,” says Mills. “This trip allows me to speak from experience when discussing the natural beauty and significance of these protected areas.” [B]
MARI GROBSCHMIDT, 7th-12th Grade Learning Specialist, and KATIE WHITE, Kindergarten Teacher, were
trained in SEED, a year long, peer-led professional development program. Prairie’s SEED Seminar creates a conversational community to drive personal and organizational change in our A

school. Through personal reflection and testimony, listening to others’ voices and learning experientially and collectively, we can grow a community that is more inclusive. In our SEED work, we value our stories and those of our students, as well as the stories on the shelves.
ELIZABETH DAVIS, Upper School English Teacher, and HANNAH LANE, Upper School World Language Teacher,
attended the Excellence in Teaching Conference at Notre Dame in October. The conference, open to teachers and administrators from public, Catholic and private schools nationwide, focused on differentiation in a variety of classroom settings.
JENNIFER COBB, Middle School English Teacher, and JOHN FRENCH, Upper School Social Studies Teacher,
co-chaired the recent Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) reaccreditation visit.
AUSTIN GUNDLACH, Assistant Director of Advancement, married Jolyn Bemis at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Racine on October 1st, 2016. The reception was held at Boerner Botantical Gardens in Hales Corners, and the couple honeymooned in Florida. [A] MATTHEW JOOST ’09, Physical Education and Health
Teacher, married Allison Scott-Hill in Harvard, Illinois, on October 8th, 2016. The reception was held at the Starline Factory in Harvard. [C] In October, ANA MORENO, School Counselor, completed the 41st Annual Marine Corps Marathon in Arlington, Virginia. With a net time of 4:22:21, she placed 337th out of 1,511 in her division. It was her fourth marathon. C

Prairie kicks off new academic year with Convocation celebration
—
By Callie Atanasoff
“Our past, present and future are forever linked by the traditions we embrace… the inspiration for learning we ignite… and the vision to celebrate that which is unique in every child.” — Imogene P. Johnson
G
raduation comes with formality. Caps and gowns. Precise timing and execution of a program that focuses on reflection through song and speech. It is a capstone to signify the end of one chapter, one more graduating class. Convocation carries its own distinction, but to a more effervescent tune. While a relatively new practice at Prairie – the school held its first celebration in the fall of 2015 – the event serves as a juxtaposition to the long-standing
traditions of Commencement. This fall’s ceremony marked the start of academia, a flourish of optimism rolled out under idyllic blue skies and the loftiest breeze. Every Prairie student and faculty member gathered on September 2nd to fill the rows of chairs assembled in front of the Primary School circle. There was a beautiful balance between the desire to display unity – each child and adult donning the same grey t-shirt emblazoned with a navy P – and the

need for individuality to shine, present in a first-grader’s striped leggings or a middle schooler’s green high-top tennis shoes. Dr. Nat Coffman and student body president Ricky Granger ’17 took turns on stage and shared hopes and inspiration for the year, their sentiments resonating with both students and teachers alike. “Take time to build relationships,” Granger urged his fellow schoolmates. Added Dr. Coffman, “Be creators, not consumers. Follow in the footsteps of Prairie alumni who have gone on to do great things.”
A JOYFUL JOURNEY Prairie’s past tells a story of dreams and aspirations. The present shows today’s students how far those dreams have taken our school, and the possibilities that still lie ahead. Past and future were tangibly connected at Convocation 2016 with the inclusion of a time capsule display following the opening remarks. The items selected were representative of Prairie’s journey over the last twenty-five years: an iPad, indicative of technology’s role in our classrooms and the world; a sculpture created by Bill Reid ’73, a symbol that the arts are alive and thriving on campus; school pride in the form of a logoed car sticker. As with so many events at Prairie, the morning culminated with the sharing of food – cookies covered with a thick layer of frosting and the ever-present P. Students breaking bread, albeit in the form of a sweet treat, with other students and their teachers, signifying the strengthening of lifelong bonds. Relationships forming because time was taken to focus on what’s to come, while sharing in a common goal – a continual pursuit of learning, loving, and growing.

PRAIRIE CELEBRATES HINDU FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
—
By Brendan J. O’Brien
B
efore the fireworks sizzled and shot into the sky, and before he danced alongside his siblings and cousins, Manveer Nagra ’16 took a moment to watch the crowd. Just weeks ago he had assumed this performance – a traditional Indian dance known as Bhangra – would be a quick tutorial held somewhere inside for a small group of curious students. Boy, was he mistaken. Manveer soon learned that Prairie’s plans for Diwali – in addition to traditional dress and food and displays of rangoli and cultural conversations – included a Bhangra performance for the entire school. And so, as Manveer scanned the faces of Prairie’s students and teachers, he relished not only how quickly he had pulled together a routine – he designed the choreography as well as arranged for early morning and after school practices – but also how his school had come together to celebrate a holiday so important to him and his family. “The whole thing was very motivating,” he said following Diwali. “Showing our fellow classmates our culture and teaching them about some of the important aspects – it was just really inspirational.”

Prairie’s commitment to community and helping students grow in knowledge and respect – this is what made the school’s Diwali celebration on November 2nd so profound. It wasn’t just a moment for Prairie’s Indian students. Or Multicultural Club members. Or a small group of curious students. It was a moment for everyone, every Primary, Middle and Upper School student and staffer cheering and clapping, everyone taking part in a traditional Indian festival that celebrates good triumphing over evil. “Hinduism is one of the great religions of the world,” Dr. Coffman said before the festivities. “We celebrate the victory of light over darkness, hope over despair, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. These are universal priorities that we all share.” This is why Prairie is so critical in the lives of its learners. The power of this school lies in its exceptional educators and talented students, yes, but it is also found in its commitment to continually provide impactful moments – like Diwali or Grandparents’ Day or a series of Veterans Day tributes – designed to make everyone pause and reflect on acceptance, understanding, integrity and compassion. And so, as Manveer Nagra studied the faces of his fellow students prior to hitting the pavement, he smiled, proud to call Prairie home.

SWAN SONG: AN ICONIC COACH SAYS FAREWELL By Carol Schmidlkofer
“I just want to thank him for being a friend through my years at Prairie and beyond. Thanks for believing in me. Thanks for being such a great role model.” – Andrew Alexander ’87

or over four decades, almost daily, Harold Swanson made the 28-mile round trip from his home to Prairie, logging over 300,000 miles. His car could be found in the first parking space, before anyone else arrived – except for those days he picked up students along the way – and he was ever present on the tennis court, decked out in his iconic straw hat. Since 1970, Harold Swanson has been the heart and soul of Prairie tennis. After 47 years, having coached hundreds of students both in tennis and in life, Swanson retired in July. To say he leaves a legacy wouldn’t begin to describe the impact he has had on Prairie and the students he nurtured. In addition to his time spent teaching Middle School social studies, he won six boys’ State Championships, coached over 50 individuals to State recognitions, and won numerous Conference and County Championships. In 2013, the Wisconsin Tennis Coaches’ Association recognized Swanson as Division II Coach of the Year. In 2014, he was inducted into the Wisconsin Tennis Coaches’ Hall of Fame. Beyond awards, though, Coach Swanson placed the greatest value on helping his protégés become better people, as evidenced by the memories and well-wishes below.
(Straw) hats off to Swanny. With much gratitude, we salute him for the many, many lives he touched. “He taught me about loyalty, trust and unconditional love. Perhaps his greatest gift to me was when I was a senior and involved in a serious accident. Coach Swanson was the first one at St. Mary’s burn center in Milwaukee, and was with me every step of the way during my recovery. It was his hard work, loyalty and unconditional love that enabled me to resurrect my career. He was my best man in my wedding and in every sense of the word will always be my best man.” – Judson Shaufler ’75
“He held us to a higher standard, and forced us to explore what seemed out of reach whether on or off the court. He not only taught us the game, but to be gracious, fair and kind. What amazed me about Mr. Swanson was the steady line of people who would make their way to see him on their visits back to Racine. He was always greeting an old player with a smile, always interested in where life had taken them. There cannot be a person who has given more of himself to the love of Prairie and its people.” – Cathy (Taylor) Pfarrer ’87
“Coach has taught me everything I know on the court, but his off-court lessons are even more valuable. ‘Swa’ always insists that we play hard with a touch of class, and that applies to far more than tennis. Coach Swanson was, and is, like a grandfather to me. He was there for anything I needed whether it was tennis advice, school advice, or a ride home. Swa is a role model and an inspiration and will be missed.” – Zane Navratil ’14
