Last fall, the 7/8 Players presented three nights of Roald Dahl’s Willie Wonka JR. in the Mitchell Theater, delighting crowds with the familiar story of the enigmatic candy manufacturer. Michael Engstrom, center, played Wonka, while Alexander Raskin, Andrew Schaefer, Rita Zambrano, Lia Artsy, and Wyatt Knoell played the golden ticket winners.
From the Head of School —
Dear Prairie Families: At Prairie, it can seem as though growth is a foregone conclusion, as students progress through each grade level, grow older, and reach ever-increasing levels of knowledge and skills. But truly strategic growth is achieved through deliberate, consistent, and enthusiastic support from every constituency within our community. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Prairie has been fortunate to achieve record growth in our fundraising this past year, which has allowed us to enhance our curriculum, campus, and student experience in ways that will make the upcoming school year our most successful yet.
“Prairie has been fortunate to achieve record growth in our fundraising this past year, which has allowed us to enhance our curriculum, campus, and student experience in ways that will make the upcoming year our most successful yet.”
Growth is visible in nearly every corner of our campus. In Early School, we completed an extensive renovation this summer to create space for a third classroom of ES students. The result of overwhelming demand for our program, this new room allowed us to welcome another sixteen students to campus this fall. In Middle School, the addition of a Courage Retreat to our beginning-of-year experiences (grades 5-6 at Camp Timber-lee and 9-12 at Camp Manito-wish) provided our 7th and 8th graders time to develop their capacity for compassion, empathy, understanding, and leadership. This fall, we also added two new faculty positions one in visual arts and one in humanities––as well as a full-time school psychologist. We also launched several new courses, including Advanced Economics and AP Physics B/C. This fall also marked Prairie’s entry into the Malone Schools Online Network (MSON), which offers real-time seminar courses such as Ancient Greek, Medical Bioethics, and Philosophy in Pop Culture with students and teachers from our Malone partner schools across the country. Our faculty continues to grow by eagerly seeking out enrichment and development opportunities. From Callie Atanasoff (Admission) participating in Leadership Racine, to Crystal Vesperman (US Math) presenting at the Wisconsins Mathematics Council, to Jessica Johnson (Art) and Meagan Moore (MS Social Studies) earning Master’s Degrees, I found myself continually awed over the summer while talking with faculty members committed to becoming even better educators. Their accomplishments were many, and I hope you will take the time to read all about them in the Faculty Notes section (p. 36). None of these new opportunities are possible without a strong foundation of support. Our identity comes not only from Prairie’s history in this community, but from those who surround and encourage the school: faculty, students, alumni, and current and former parents. All of you are an important part of Prairie. Our successes are your successes, and I appreciate your commitment and support. Thank you! Sincerely,
Nathaniel W. Coffman, Ed.D. Head of School & President

Letter from the Chairman —
Dear Friends, From Prairie’s earliest days, our 8th graders have taken a class trip to Washington, D.C., marking the end of their Middle School careers. This curriculum-based trip, coming on the heels of their study of US history, is particularly anticipated by the students, who prepare for it all year long. At their commencement in May, I noted the level of anticipation was particularly high as they looked forward to their adventure, departing the following week. By no means a vacation, the weeklong itinerary is rigorous, including visits to museums, memorials, monuments, art galleries, and more.
“Here at The Prairie School, we are adrenaline makers. It is our responsibility — our duty — to afford our students opportunities to discover what energizes them and free them to go after it.”
One of the highlights of the trip is a stop at NASA’s Air and Space Museum. The Spirit of St. Louis, piloted by Charles Lindbergh in his famous trans-Atlantic flight, is on display there. Lindbergh is quoted as saying: “It is the greatest shot of adrenaline to be doing what you have wanted to do so badly. You almost feel like you could fly without the plane.” Here at The Prairie School, we are adrenaline makers. It is our responsibility — our duty — to afford our students opportunities to discover what energizes them and free them to go after it. We inspire them to uncover, as Lindbergh said, what they want to do so badly, equipping them to travel where their aspirations lead. Here, the child-centered atmosphere facilitated by our innovative faculty is a safe place where students learn to create, collaborate, and communicate. Here, the planet is filled with possibility, where students feel like they could fly without the plane. Thank you for your partnership on this amazing journey. Everything you do, from contributing to the Prairie Fund, participating in the Golf Classic, bidding at Premiere — and including giving of your time and talents — it is all crucial to the continued growth of The Prairie School. You are adrenaline makers, too, and we appreciate your support. Sincerely,
Imogene Powers Johnson Chair, The Prairie School Board of Trustees

THE FABULOUS FIVE Five holes-in-one and a 50-point victory at the WIAA Division 2 State Championship at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis., made for another remarkable, recordsetting year for girls’ golf. The group suspected something special was unfolding when senior Olivia Scumaci, left, made two holes-in-one in the span of three days to begin the season. Her accomplishments landed her in the Faces in the Crowd section of Sports Illustrated (10/10/17). The team’s 50-stroke victory over Spooner was their second consecutive State Championship, and their third title since the program started in 2008. Prairie’s five golfers were seniors Rachel Gentile, Danielle Palmen, Scumaci, and Julia Michicich, and junior Kate Munro.
Letter from the Prairie Fund Chair —
Dear Friends, Even more impressive than everything Prairie has accomplished over the past fifty-two years are the ways the school continues to evolve. TPS has advanced in numerous areas since I attended, and I am confident that by the time my children graduate, it will have progressed even beyond the outstanding institution it is today.
“I am pleased to report that both alumni and parent participation in the Prairie Fund increased significantly this year.”
Despite a deep-rooted commitment to growth, Prairie has always remained true to its core ideals of helping children evolve into creators, collaborators, and communicators. One of the foremost reasons the school has been so successful in accomplishing these goals is because of people like you, and I am pleased to report that both alumni and parent participation in the Prairie Fund increased significantly this year. Furthermore, we continue to see strong support from grandparents, parents of alumni, friends of TPS, and our faculty and staff (which had 100% participation for the 3rd year in a row). Your generosity resulted in a record year of raising over $600,000 for the Prairie Fund! The collective power of philanthropy makes transformative projects possible, touching all students. For example, the expansion of the Early School into a third section brings Prairie’s whole-child education to even more young learners, providing them with a strong foundation to last a lifetime. In addition to evolution and improvement, there is another consistent theme that weaves together the years and decades at Prairie: desire. A student’s desire to learn and achieve; an educator’s desire to impact and impart wisdom; a community’s desire to ensure Prairie is one of the finest schools in America. Your support is pivotal in making every one of these things happen. All of us in the Prairie community thank you for choosing to invest in our students and faculty! Sincerely,
Darryl Babu ’88 2016-2017 Prairie Fund Chair

DONOR PROFILE:
JOE ’80 AND NANCY VERANTH
— By Brendan J. O’brien
Shortly after coming to Prairie in the fall of 1972, Joe Veranth began familiarizing himself with the nuances of life on campus – the culture, the kids, the traditions, the teachers. Yes, he was only ten, but right away one very noticeable theme stood out. Prairie was a place of possibility. “One of my first real memories was [Middle School math teacher] Peter Wilson,” he recalls. “He allowed me to work through chapters at my own pace as long as I passed the tests. Immediately I was being taught there were no real boundaries on learning. That concept sort of snowballed throughout my experience. I was by no means an A student, but I was interested in every academic field and there were no limits on what I could take.” In Upper School, Veranth was impacted by the scope of ideas and experiences he was exposed to on a daily basis, so much so that following graduation he attended Northwestern University where he majored in Humanities. “College is more career-track and vocation-focused now,” he says. “However, I’m a big advocate for a humanities education. What the humanities does, and really what’s done here at Prairie, is hone the student’s ability to read critically, write effectively, and present ideas in a clear, organized way.” Following Northwestern, Veranth, a Trustee of The Prairie School, earned his MBA from the Stern School of Business at New York University while working in New York City. He has worked for Dana Investment Advisors in Waukesha, Wis., since 1994, and today serves as the company’s Chief Investment Officer. Whether as a volunteer, trustee, donor or parent – he has had four children attend Prairie – Veranth has remained engaged at the place where he fell in love with learning.
That involvement took a step further in the spring of 2017 when he and his wife, Nancy, created the Jerome J. Veranth Scholarship. With a goal of recruiting “Talented, low-income Racine-area students who will flourish within the Prairie community,” the Veranths’ desired impact for the scholarship is multifaceted – both helping students afford Prairie who might not otherwise have the chance to attend, while also expanding and increasing the ties between Prairie and the greater Racine community. “We want to find kids that have the aptitude to go to Prairie, but where money is the only hurdle,” he says. “Families have to be willing to contribute something no matter their financial situation, but we’re thinking long term. We want this scholarship to build and help as many kids as possible.” Beyond the Veranths’ significant financial pledge, Joe is also hoping to do whatever he can to help familiarize recipients and their families with life at Prairie. “Ability to thrive at Prairie embodies a couple things,” says Veranth. “Confidence. You have to be confident in yourself because you’re going to be challenged. Optimism is also key; you have to believe you’re good enough to succeed here. At the same time, it’s important for the kids to know there are people behind them, supporting them, as they become familiar with our school.” Just like Mr. Wilson supported him back in the fall of 1972.
The Jack Mitchell Society
Named for The Prairie School’s first Headmaster, the Jack Mitchell Society honors those who have supported the Prairie Fund for five or more consecutive years. Our entire community appreciates the unwavering loyalty of these donors.

The 20th Annual Golf Classic & Dinner Prairie’s Golf Classic & Dinner is a long-standing tradition that, over the past twenty years, has raised over $1.5 million for the school’s financial aid
program. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers and donors, the 2016 event netted $98,000 in support of deserving students who would otherwise be unable to afford the cost of full tuition.

- By Brendan J. O’Brien It’s been a week. Well, four days, actually. Four days and already the difference is noticeable. My three-year-old twins, Sawyer and Sullivan, are good kids, but four days in Terie Carpenter’s classroom has made them kinder somehow, wiser, more interested in the world around them. This, of course, is what great teachers do – they use the attitudes and attributes inherent in their students as starting points to nurture and develop well-rounded people. For 15 years Carpenter has been nurturing and developing Early School students at Prairie. Common is the Upper School student who still claims her as their favorite teacher, fondly recalling their days in her bright, vibrant classroom. After earning her undergraduate degree in Special Education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Carpenter spent seven years teaching for Racine Unified before coming to Prairie in 2002. She focused her graduate work on teaching hearing-impaired children and still incorporates sign language into her classroom every day, something that was revealed to me firsthand. Driving home one afternoon in late August, the twins excitedly started signing different zoo animals – zebra, giraffe, tiger, elephant – one after another, the creatures alive to them in a way they’d never before known. “My philosophy is to nurture and educate in a warm and loving environment that is developmentally appropriate for young children,” says Terie. Everyone on campus knows she accomplishes exactly that. I just didn’t realize it would be so obvious after only four days. Created by former art teacher Cathy McCombs, the Inspiration Award – formerly known as the Mystery Doll – honors a staff member, teacher, board member, or volunteer who displays a true passion for Prairie.

- By Aliya Pitts There are several things that come to mind when one thinks of Sue Cook: her boundless energy, her love of tennis, her impeccable taste. When I think of Sue, however, I think of peach pie. Upon my arrival at Prairie in 2015, Sue’s involvement with the school was already well into its fourth decade. In that time, she has chaired and served on countless committees – volunteering wherever the need is greatest, from her children’s classrooms to Prairie’s Board of Trustees. When a person has been part of an institution for so many years, their enthusiasm can wane – but Sue’s willingness to lend a hand has never wavered. Her most recent project was the daunting task of sorting the thousands of haphazardly-stored photographs that now make up the Prairie Archives – over fifty years of history, now neatly categorized, labeled, and wrangled into tidy boxes thanks to Sue’s leadership. Her attention to the most minute details, combined with her passion for Prairie and willingness to tackle any task, has now laid the groundwork for the school’s next fifty years of historical recordkeeping.
So why peach pie? Last spring, I had the good fortune of attending a meeting at Sue’s home for one of her committees. She had volunteered to host, and after a productive working session over lunch, we were presented with perfect slices of homemade peach pie for dessert. It was not simply enough to chair the event, to host the meeting, or to so thoughtfully serve lunch – the peach pie was the proverbial cherry on top. I am willing to wager that many friends of Prairie have a similar Sue Cook story: a time when her thoughtfulness and attention to detail took their day from good to great. Which is why, when Sue was presented with The Imogene P. Johnson Award for Distinguished Service at Premeire last spring, the room roared to its feet, clapping and cheering for a woman who is relentless in her dedication to this school. The Award for Distinguished Service is named for co-founder Imogene Johnson, who had the extraordinary vision 52 years ago to establish The Prairie School in the middle of a Wind Point field. The honor goes to individuals who have shown uncommon dedication through their 32 | prairieschool.com gifts of time, energy and other resources. 32 | prairieschool.com

In April, Prairie’s 1st Graders were selected as winners in the 2017 Bookworm Gardens Readers Roundup Creation Contest. The annual design contest is open to Wisconsin classrooms from preschool through 5th grade. Our students based their concept on Drum Dream Girl by Margarita Engle, and used the book’s theme – that both boys and girls should be free to dream and achieve anything – as inspiration. In May, the entire Primary School visited the Sheboygan-based Gardens on a field trip, and 1st Grade was able to assist with their garden’s construction.

Discovering their Purpose THE MEDAL FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IS PRAIRIE’S HIGHEST ACADEMIC HONOR. EVERY YEAR THE WINNER RECEIVES THE MEDAL TO BE WORN DURING COMMENCEMENT, AND THIS YEAR’S AWARD WENT TO JASON BATES. “Jason is determined, diligent, and eager to dive into the messy details of true scholarship. He is a quick thinker who works hard to connect ideas across traditional courses or disciplines to build a larger map of knowledge. He is a determined and curious learner who approaches challenging problems by using his prior knowledge to guide him into new discoveries. He is a selfless student who genuinely wants everyone around him to succeed and will take all of the time necessary to help fellow students master difficult concepts - even if he has already mastered them. He goes above and beyond by treating education as a team event and doing whatever possible to get everyone across the finish line. In addition to a first rate mind and work ethic he has a wry sense of humor and sharp wit. He is humble, honest and in many ways an old soul who embodies what it means to live the life of the mind. ”
– Nathaniel W. Coffman, Ed.D. Head of School & President

“Jason had experiences in parochial, public, and other educational programs before he arrived in Upper School four years ago. At Prairie, he finally experienced an educational environment that could match his abilities, inquisitiveness and interests. The school is a truly special place that goes far beyond the academic rigor. The transformative Renaissance-style education is truly a blessing. Jason came for academics, found community, and leaves with purpose.” - Mike Bates, Jason’s father

JILL OSIECKI
jill and chris osiecki
— By Aliya Pitts Along with several of her siblings, Jill ( Jorgenson) Osiecki, parent of Brenna ’15 and Branden ’18, works in the family business: Plastic Parts, Inc., founded in 1966 by her father, Art, a lifelong Racine resident. Although the Jorgensen family is deeply committed to the company and cherishes its historical roots, those close to Jill might say that her parents’ true legacy is one of bighearted philanthropy. The concept of giving back is deeply important to Jill, something she says she learned from Art and her mom, Jeanette. “My father taught us that people were ’Blessed to be a blessing’ to others. He did not believe that giving was reserved for the wealthy, and that there were many ways of being generous – that everyone could participate by giving of their time, treasure, and talents,” says Jill. As a family, the Osieckis have worked hard to keep that concept at the forefront of their own lives. The Prairie School, along with a number of other community organizations, has been the fortunate beneficiary of many of their charitable gifts – including gifts to help install Prairie’s turf soccer field and a recent contribution to facilitate the upgrading of the school’s kiln. The Osieckis are also loyal donors to The Prairie Fund. “We have benefitted from associating with wonderfully generous people who had a joy of giving and passed on
the ethic of sharing in proportion to their own blessings. Not just our parents, but other significant role models have humbly shared with us and others, and their lives were never diminished by their generosity; rather, they enjoyed their philanthropy,” says Jill. The Osieckis first arrived at Prairie in 2008 as they were seeking a new Middle School for Brenna – and hoping to find somewhere that both of their children could attend together. After doing their research and, most importantly, asking other parents about their educational decisions, they found themselves gravitating to Prairie. Today, as Branden enters his senior year at Prairie, Jill is reflective on their years at TPS. “The kids are very confident and interesting writers, and they also have learned good logical and critical reasoning. Brenna was exceptionally wellprepared for college in her writing skills, and the opportunity to learn Chinese has been truly unique for her. They also have a heart for justice and fairness that has been reinforced by the Prairie community.” Those hearts for justice and fairness certainly started with Brenna and Branden’s grandparents, Art and Jeanette – proof that the family legacy is alive and well.
Randy Goree (1952-2017)
OPPORTUNITY IN ABUNDANCE
RANDY GOREE AND KEVIN WILL (1986 ETCETERA)
— By Brendan J. O’Brien Kind soul. It’s a phrase used to compliment the depth and generosity of one’s compassion. Former Prairie educator Randy Goree was a kind soul. Friendly, funny, and generous, Randy was instrumental in nearly everything that happened on campus in the 1980s. He advised students. He was a 5th and 6th grade Outdoor Education Leader. He spent time as the Admission Director. He coached basketball. He was…everywhere. However, like all excellent educators, Randy was best known for an ability to captivate and inspire inside the classroom. He did exactly that while teaching Middle and Upper School Social Studies from 1979-1989. “He had a unique ability to keep students accountable, but not in a stern way,” remembers friend and coworker 42 | prairieschool.com
Kevin Will, US Science Teacher. “He had high expectations for his students.” It was Randy who took Kevin under his wing in 1984 and explained to him the ins and outs of the school. “He welcomed me to Prairie, showed me how to be a part of this place, and is one of the big reasons I made it here early. Because of that, I’m still here thirty-four years later.” Part of Prairie’s mission is affording students opportunity in abundance; the hope being their interests and passions diversify, that they become well-rounded in countless aspects of life, that they grow in empathy and compassion. It’s that well-rounded kindness that Kevin Pearson, former Art Teacher and MS Head during Randy’s tenure, remembers most about his coworker and friend. “As a teacher, Randy wanted his students to think for themselves and to have a
passion for learning. As a colleague, Randy was authentic, compassionate, and shared his great sense of humor. As a friend, Randy was loyal, generous, listened well, and best of all, he was someone you could always depend upon.” Passionate, authentic, and generous. That’s what Prairie wants its students to become and these are the exact qualities that Randy Goree embodied.
Adrianne Paffrath (1932-2017) A BEAUTIFUL REFRAIN — By Callie Atanasoff
W
hen the sun rises, light breaks through slowly, gracefully. It extends its arms around the stems of budding flowers, peeks through the slats of wooden bridges, crawls across the skyline of the city nearby. All of life’s nooks and crannies are revealed through light, a lens so clear and true. This was the same lens through which Adrianne Paffrath saw her life: one of brightness and possibility, anything but mundane. In her presence there was joy, and she quickly passed that along to those around her. Prairie had the privilege of sharing in Adrianne’s incredible talents for over forty years. She was a highly respected colleague and leader, initiating the school’s first musicals as well as founding the piano and Suzuki programs. Her creative prowess was evident in her melodies, her choreography, and in every stitch of the elaborate costumes she crafted for more than two decades. Prairie’s production of Kismet, set in fictional Baghdad, was a particular favorite. Costumes called for beautiful garments reflecting traditional Middle Eastern attire. Rather than heading to a local craft store, Adrianne ventured to Chicago, perusing Indian and Pakistani shops in search of the perfect materials. Her attention to detail was conscious and thoughtful. Most importantly, she was committed to the pursuit of learning for herself and her students. On more than a single occasion, class may have begun with music and ended with a mural; one piece in particular still hangs in the music rehearsal room. The way she combined various art forms — percussion with painting — was a reflection of her ability to synthesize, making each component, each individual, more exceptional than if it were on its own. She believed in what was unrealized and struck a balance between elegance and strength in her approach.
Adrianne’s life was an endless stream of creativity, curiosity and exploration, demonstrated through her love of the arts and of community. A Radcliffe College Cum Laude graduate turned Racine Montessori School Co-Founder, Prairie School Music Teacher, department chair, and designer, church choir director and coordinator, small business owner, and always an artist at heart, Adrianne found ways to turn passion into a great adventure. When she wasn’t conducting or collaborating, she spent time honing her own skills, the strokes of her brush bringing watercolor to life and the greenest of thumbs producing lush floral gardens. When the sun sets, nature’s stage becomes quiet and shadowy. The trees whisper softly to each other and creation settles in for the night. Yet there is still sweet music that comes from the grass and the sky, sounds that are simple and wonderful and inherently magical. Adrianne listened closely to the world; if we stop and listen, we can appreciate the beautiful refrain of the life she loved.
