All the Way Up A season that began with two-a-days in the sweltering heat of August ended with the hoisting of a gold ball on a cold night in November. The Hawks’ 1-0 victory over Sturgeon Bay earned them the title of 2017 WIAA Division 4 State Champions.

Dear Prairie Families, Growth doesn’t happen in isolation. Plants need water and sunshine; athletes require teammates and coaches to reach peak performance and strength. At Prairie, our students are guided by the mentorship and knowledge of our expert faculty — as well as the support of our wider school community — to help them learn to their fullest potential. Strategic growth is possible here at Prairie not only because every student is known and valued, supported and challenged, but because we come together as a community to strengthen the foundation of our shared pursuit of excellence.

Parents working in tandem to support our faculty and educate the wider community about our mission, admission opportunities, and annual Prairie Fund initiative. A pair of trustees whose brainchild has become one of the most successful scholarship golf outings in the nation. My mother, Gene Johnson, had a vision for the kind of school Prairie would be. MASTER MENTORS Whether it’s relationships forged between faculty advisors and their advisees, or the bonds formed between older students and their younger buddies, the intentional creation of meaningful mentoring relationships is a point of emphasis at Prairie. The school’s Buddy Program matches up students across the different divisions, and through a variety of activities – like making Valentine cards for senior citizens in February – they are encouraged to interact with one another while focusing on elements such as leadership, compassion, and gratitude.

GATHERING TOGETHER Year after year, the Jack Mitchell Theatre is one of the busiest places on campus.

From Summer Bridge workshops for new students, to faculty meetings, to lively musicals, plays, and concerts, the theatre remains a place committed to creativity and community. Man About Town

A Racine native, Knoell now resides in Mount Pleasant and runs his dentistry practice locally. He thinks the area is entering a period of change. “Up until a year or so ago, Racine had consistently been looking for a big break — and not getting one for a long time,” he says. “It seems like Racine is back on the map. There have been ups and downs, and I feel like it’s on the upward swing.”

A Different Kind of ‘Lifer’

Knoell attended TPS as a Primary School student, from 1974 through 1980. The thing he remembers most?

All three Knoell children (Emma ’20, Wyatt ’22, and Greta ’29) are following in their father’s footsteps as Prairie Hawks. Until last year, the family had a child in every division — Primary, Middle, and Upper — which Lyndsay says “Provided a wonderful perspective.”

Shifting Perspective

When asked what differences he notices about his children’s experiences at Prairie compared to his own, Knoell doesn’t hesitate in his answer. “Prairie has always offered a lot, but they offer much more now. My experience was limited to the Primary School, but one of the things I notice with my kids is when they have an area of interest or something they want more on, Prairie seems to be able to provide that — not just in academics, but in co-curricular activities as well.”

Despite a self-proclaimed lack of fundraising experience, Knoell chose to get involved in the Prairie Fund because of his strong connection to the school — and desire to see it grow. “What I find most motivating is getting people educated to the fact that there is a gap between the cost of educating a child here and what each family pays in tuition — I was not particularly familiar with that myself,” Knoell admits. “I like to help with getting people more involved. It’s one thing to write a tuition check, and it’s something above and beyond to give a donation.”

ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC CONTINUES TO GARNER IMPRESSIVE SUPPORT FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID. — By Rachel Morello, Communication Manager

The year is 1997. Prairie Trustees John Gittings and Joe Marino work tirelessly to set up the very first Golf Classic — a fundraiser to support the school’s Scholarship Fund.

They figure the event will be a fun way to attract some well-meaning athletes and friends of the school, and to raise money for financial assistance.

Twenty-one years later, Prairie’s annual Golf Classic & Dinner has morphed into one of the most successful golf outings in the country — in proceeds and process.

Consistently ranking in the top five percent of golf outings nationwide, since 1997 the Classic has raised over $1.5 million to support deserving students who cannot afford the full cost of tuition. This fall, bolstered by the generosity of friends and event underwriters, including Presenting

Sponsor, Specialty Underwriters, LLC, the Classic set an all-time high for funds raised.

But the Classic has changed in more than just numbers.

Participants now have the opportunity to crowdfund their entry fee, gathering donations from friends and family to cover the cost. Non-golfers can also join for the dinner portion of the evening, catching up with the group after the round has ended at the Racine Country Club for cocktail hour, games, and a meal.

Much has changed in 21 years — but the commitment remains to make a Prairie education possible for countless young people.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS Chris Campbell ’03 Sr. Product Designer, Opal I struggled to perform well as a student while at TPS. The grades I received definitely reflected the amount of effort that I put into studying and school in general. At the time, I think I assumed that I was bad at school and therefore hadn’t gotten much out of it. Once I found the work that I was meant to do, I realized how very wrong I was.

After graduating college, I began a career in web design, and quickly found myself in Portland, Oregon, working at a design agency that was developing a variety of apps focused on organizing a company’s employees around causes like brainstorming, volunteering, and social awareness. After a few years, we created a very focused tool for marketing teams at places like Apple, Microsoft, Starbucks, NASA, Intel, Target, Amazon, Audi, Mercedes, GM, and NBC. The type of creativity I rely on daily is something that I was encouraged to tap into at my time at Prairie, even if I didn’t realize it at the time. I truly appreciate Prairie’s willingness to not give up on the students who struggle, because as I’ve discovered: the lessons learned and creative thinking skills honed can make a huge difference later in life.

Today, Opal has 120+ employees (I was number six) and I am a Senior Product Designer, working on our most complex design and engineering problems. I have more drive than ever to produce worldclass work. I don’t think I’d be here if it wasn’t for the faculty at Prairie.

2000s In September, the Public Relations Society of America’s Tulsa chapter recognized Adam Paluka ’03 of the Emergency Medical Services Authority as the organization’s Young Professional of the Year.

Kayla (Polzin) Matz ’06 is a chemistry instructor at Milwaukee Area Technical College. She recently conducted a class focused on greenhouse gas emissions at Racine’s Eco-Justice Education Center.

Brittany Holterman ’04 was featured in the 12/3/18 edition of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for her training to qualify for American Ninja Warrior. In addition to her civil engineering work as an independent contractor for Pinnacle Engineering Group, and teaching classes at her 250-member Legacy Gym Wauwtosa, she has been busy with a rigorous training and competition schedule. Since last December, she has competed in twelve ninja or warrior-style competitions – she took 1st place seven times.

2010s Rachel Kammerzelt ’14 graduated from Augustana College in 2017. She is now living in Lille, France and working with middle and high school students as a language assistant.

TEACHERS WHO INSPIRE GREATNESS — EMILY HENKEL, Early School Educational Assistant, recently completed a Wilson Reading System (WRS) introductory course. The course provided an overview of the WRS curriculum, reading research, dyslexia, appropriate student identification and placement, program implementation, progress monitoring, scheduling, and strategies to create a successful learning environment. Emily can now use WRS — which Prairie employs in its Compass Program — in a 1:1 or small group setting, and may choose to get her full certification in WRS in the future.

“At Prairie, school is not just about giving the best experience possible for the students in their time here, but also to prepare them the big world out there,” Bill says. “The great college counseling team is a key part of this whole process.”

The sign was inspired by other grand entryways to universities of the world, many of which call back to great works of art — plus, Bill notes, “A kick of subdued goofiness which I am prone to!”

Founded in 1967, the Arts Council works to support and advocate for emerging and established artists in the community. The organization commended her work involving art projects with children at HALO, the Homeless Assistance Leadership Organization in Racine.

Donor Profile: Dennis & Gail Axelson THE WOMAN WITH THE QUESTIONS — By Rachel Morello, Communication Manager During one of his first official events as a Trustee of The Prairie School, Dennis Axelson remembers introducing himself to a pair of teachers. He noticed the duo exchange a look after hearing his name — so he asked them about it.

They replied, “You’re married to the woman with the questions.”

That’s Dennis’ wife, Gail Axelson — a name that, nowadays, is familiar in every corner of Prairie’s campus.

Gail does everything from substitute teaching in Middle School math, to filling in for the Primary School music teacher, to pulling students out for one-on-one reading instruction with Compass. Gail is what you might call Prairie’s “utility player extraordinaire.”

But before she joined the faculty, Gail was a parent — a curious one — with three young children.

Gail originally visited Prairie during an open house in the late 90’s. The couple’s eldest daughter was not having a positive experience at her current school near their home in Waukesha, and the Axelsons were investigating a handful of private schools in the area. By this time, Dennis had already joined Prairie’s finance committee, and had seen firsthand what made the school so special. Gail had not.

But she had a teaching background, and she decided she wanted to know more. Through Dennis, Gail got in touch with the Head of School, Mark Murphy, who handed her the keys to Prairie and gave her eight hours to roam campus — something unheard of, even at that time.

That’s when she started asking questions. ‘What does a typical day look like?’ ‘What’s the purpose of this lesson?’

‘What’s your target in this class?’ The answers Gail received were enough to compel her to call Dennis at the end of the day and let him know, “We’re moving to Racine.”

And Racine is where they’ve lived for the past 20-plus years. All three Axelson girls attended Prairie, and Gail began substitute teaching in 2006 — before officially joining the faculty in 2016. She calls Prairie her ‘happy place.’

“Even before I started working here at all, I felt more like a member of the community here than the school the girls had gone to before,” Gail reflects. “I felt welcome.

Everybody’s warm, asking how you’re doing. The kids here are responsive, the parents are responsive, and that’s huge. I wouldn’t want to do this anywhere else.”

If one could characterize Gail’s work for Prairie as “behind the scenes,” Dennis’ role would be considered even further backstage. Along with his roles as a Trustee and member of the Finance Committee from 1999 through 2008, Dennis served as a leader of the Development Committee through 2014 — helping Prairie add many zeros to its fundraising totals over the years. The Axelsons themselves are longtime, loyal donors — supporting Prairie for more than two decades. Their stewardship even extends to their time as volunteer leaders for Premiere, and representatives for Prairie at various national conferences.

22 years is a long time to stick around anywhere. Especially after your kids, your primary tie to a school, have graduated. So what keeps them here?“It’s all about people,” Dennis states simply. “I don’t believe folks give to the school. They give to people.”

The Axelsons are two of those people — the kind that give of their time, talent, and treasure to make Prairie the best it can be, and end up themselves becoming part of the fabric of the place in the process.

The reminders remain.

We miss her standing in the hallway on Halloween, her eyes aglow as she passes candy to the Primary School students parading past in their costumes.

We miss her car parked outside Door #2 on Wednesday afternoons, with visitors to the Performing Arts Circle crossing her path following the weekly meeting she had with Dr. Coffman.

We miss her taking the podium to regale us with her wit, making sure to touch on her affinity for exploration and discovery, her pride in Prairie, and her immense love for family.

Even though she’s gone, Mrs. Johnson’s presence continues to permeate the campus. She’s found in the words and wisdom she left behind. She’s found in our way forward — an unyielding commitment to nurturing the creativity and uniqueness in every child.

This gives us comfort: knowing Prairie will always remain impacted by her dream and committed to her vision. This will always be a school filled with people who care about each other and about making the world a better place.

Letting In the Light It is a long ago Friday night and I am folk dancing when a friend arrives and says, “Your school is on fire!”

Somehow I am able to drive up 3 Mile Road, the last car before it’s closed off. Prairie is, indeed, ablaze. At that point there are only two people standing in that dark, dark night, watching: Gene, and Willie Hilpert. No fire trucks or police have arrived. What I remember is Gene’s steadiness. Her resolve.

Her calm as she watches the flames consume the building.

The next day some of us salvage sodden remnants and plans are made to hold classes in the small gym complete with tiny Gold Medal directors chairs. There’s a plan “to build as before and more.” The fire burns our educational home. But Gene is present for us all and so is her vision. There is no energy wasted on the how and the who. Founders ’ Intent

Today I am thinking about Gene and her passion for eclipses (she traveled globally to watch them!) and her role as a leader. Across all the years I experience her involvement with Prairie, Gene consistently has the wisdom and the capacity to give us the canvas and trust us to teach and learn - and empower us to be our very selves. Sometimes we create amazing things; sometimes we stumble a little. But, Gene never, ever blocks our light, staying present for us always.

To be present for so many for so long is an astonishing journey. Thank you, Gene, for having the vision to create The Prairie School, for always setting forth, and for nurturing the dreams in all of us. To the starlight!

The Prairie School exists to enhance the educational options for Racine and surrounding communities, to provide an excellent independent ES-12th grade college preparatory educational institution and to serve as a key catalyst to make our community a better place to live, work and raise a family.

Warm and Endearing Gene was a very special lady, part of a very special family. She was always welcoming, friendly, and humble. We particularly appreciated her leadership at Prairie from which both of our children graduated. That education has served them well in life.

THE FUTURE IS WOWED Every

winter, Primary School students bundle up and head across campus to the Johnson Athletic Center. The walk is maybe five hundred feet, but when you’re that age such a journey seems much longer. Same thing with the height and celebrity status of those they’re going to see: wild and wide-eyed, the kids circle the court to watch the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams execute a variety of drills, and it might as well be Giannis and Co. running layup lines on the court.

The Primary School Fan Assembly is yet another 40 | prairieschool.com purposeful event intended to foster community across the divisions. After inviting the PS students onto the JAC floor

for drills and contests, the varsity coaches invite everyone and their families to attend that evening’s home basketball game for PS Fan Night – this year, a thrilling 71-58 victory over crosstown rival Racine St. Catherine’s.

It was just one of many lasting memories for the basketball program in 2017-18, a year that included senior JC Butler eclipsing the 2,000 point mark en route to becoming Racine County’s all-time leading scorer, the boys winning the Metro Classic Conference with a 15-1 record, and the girls going on a remarkable late season run that resulted in a WIAA Division 4 Regional Championship.

The Last Word

FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION — By Callie Atanasoff Saffron is a popular spice typically used in Middle Eastern and Spanish cuisines. Many ingredients are refined and retooled, but the production of saffron is a labor of love.

The spice originates from a flower that furnishes just three stigmas -- threads -- of saffron, and blooms for only a single week each year. Not to mention that saffron must be harvested by hand during the morning, when the flowers are closed and sheltering the delicate threads inside. The result?

A distinctly beautiful aroma and hue, giving life to pilafs and paellas.

The impact is striking.

So it is with our community at Prairie.

When hearts and minds come together, the manifestation is the 12 Days Holiday Assembly, an all-school celebration of Diwali, and a Multicultural Fair representing 30 different countries. Because what could foster a love of learning and the building of a community more than tasting a family recipe that traveled over oceans to end up here? Or watching a silk sari move in the wind as a group of students demonstrates a traditional Indian dance?

With the addition of each new family, each new faculty member, Prairie’s profile evolves. There is less ’them’ and more ’us.’ More coming together, more discussing of thoughts and ideas, more opportunities to stretch and grow. In sharing the unique aspects of our cultures from across the globe, we discover not only the traditions new to us, but the similarities that bring us together. As our mission states, “Our community of students, faculty, and families works together to create a collaborative and supportive culture grounded in human values -- celebrating both our differences and commonalities.”

We explore our differences because they create conversation: a beautiful dialogue that is layered and intricate, defining what we want to be as a school because of who we are individually.

It’s a process. Time, energy, emotion -- they are all expended to get to that place, the community we strive to be. And how worth the effort it is.
