ON THE COVER: The Prairie student community forms a celebratory “50” on Founders’ Day
Letter from the Head of School FROM FOUNDERS’ DAY TO REUNION WEEKEND — Dear Prairie Community, My first year as Prairie’s Head of School was the most memorable of my 26-year career. Celebrating
our 50th year was an incredible immersion in all things Prairie past and present. It has been great
to meet so many alumni and their parents who returned to campus this year, and I continue to be
impressed with Prairie’s impact on generations of graduates and their families. It is inspiring to meet
our alumni and learn of their accomplishments around the world and in almost every imaginable career. From organic farming to space exploration, from arts to the professions, from civil servants to CEOs,
our alumni are leaders in their fields living lives of purpose and curiosity.
From Founders’ Day through graduation and reunion weekend, it was a great year of celebration. We had amazing visiting artists and many fun parties, but what I enjoyed the most during the 50th
festivities was the shared joy I saw as people recounted their personal experience with The Prairie School.
“All of us are connected by the people who have committed their lives and careers to Prairie.”
A music class with Pat Badger, golf practice with Kevin Will, or advisory with Bonnie Benes: stories
like these were told over and over again, and listeners nodded and smiled as they recognized their own
memories among these tales. All of us are connected by the people who have committed their lives and
careers to Prairie. The faculty, staff and administration are dedicated to helping every student grow to
be his or her best self. Prairie faculty work hard every day to create a learning environment where our
students think critically, ask questions, imagine possibilities, find and create answers, build knowledge,
develop resilience, collaborate creatively, and strive for growth. Our students and alumni are thriving in large part because of the efforts of Prairie’s outstanding educators and we are fortunate to be a part of a
community created by generations of Prairie educators.
The philanthropy reflected in this report is due to the tremendous efforts of the Prairie faculty and the
loyalty their work inspires. Some of the most dedicated members of our community are the volunteers
who organized and produced the Golf Classic, Prairie Premiere and the Prairie Fund (formerly the
Annual Fund). The faculty and I truly appreciate their leadership, and we thank all of you who have
also supported the school through your volunteer efforts and philanthropy. It is an honor to be part of a learning community where so many are so generous.
Now, in my second year as Head of School, with an increasingly clear understanding of who we are
and where we come from, I look forward to continually working with all of you—our parents, alumni,
friends, faculty and students—to help our school thrive by working collectively and individually to grow
a little bit better each and every day as we move forward into our next fifty years. Sincerely,
Nathaniel W. Coffman, Ed.D. Head of School

Letter from the Chairman A YEAR IN REVIEW — Dear Friends, At its core, Prairie is a family of teachers who care, parents who care and students who care about each other and making the world a better place. Together with our many supporters, we have made Prairie the special school it is: dedicated to each child’s success, committed to helping each and every one reach their own unique potential. This is the legacy celebrated by our yearlong golden anniversary series of events. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, a sincere thanks to the members of our 50th Anniversary Committee for everything they did to make this milestone year a memorable one.
“Your teachers believed in you and your dreams —nurturing your talents, encouraging your passions and helping prepare you to realize those dreams.”
Looking back on the many outstanding events of the past year, what stands out is the multigenerational interconnection among those who attended. Particularly during our Reunion Weekend, where alumni and their families – including their own children, parents and grandparents – eagerly shared their favorite Prairie stories and reminisced with former classmates and special teachers. Like the school itself, the relationships formed here were built to last and have stood the test of time. So many have walked through our doors as children and gone on to build remarkable lives of purpose and achievement. Your teachers believed in you and your dreams – nurturing your talents, encouraging your passions and helping prepare you to realize those dreams. We are humbled by and so grateful for the support of all Prairie alumni in helping us continue to be a place where young people are inspired to reach for the stars. Prairie has always been forward looking, eagerly embracing change and innovation and striving to be constantly better. That will never change. We want you to be as much a part of that future as you have been of our past. Sincerely,
Imogene Powers Johnson Chair, The Prairie School Board of Trustees

HONORING THREE GREAT LEGACIES —
T
hroughout its fifty-year history, The Prairie School has attracted a colorful array of outstanding teachers, coaches and advisors to ensure that students receive the finest education possible. It should come as no surprise, then, that the formal announcement of the school’s 2015 Honorary Alumni inductees prompted Jeff Joerres ’78 and Sarah Geenen Joerres ’79 to remember three individuals who helped define their time at Prairie. This trio of inspiring educators represents what the Joerreses describe as a “Trifecta of role modeling and inspiration.” Harold Swanson, Dick Zimmermann and Dave Drewek have touched countless lives during their tenures, and their decades of dedication set the stage for a generous gift from the Joerreses that pays tribute to their respective legacies.
This trio of
A natural leader, Jeff Joerres played a critical role in the remarkable growth of ManPowerGroup, a Milwaukee-based multinational human resource consulting firm, for over two decades. Since joining the company in 1993, Jeff has worn many hats – V.P. of Marketing and Senior V.P. of European Operations and Global Account Management. He was promoted to CEO in 1999, and in 2001, Jeff was named ManPowerGroup’s Chairman of the Board. In addition to his accomplishments at ManPowerGroup, Jeff is an active member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s board of directors and serves on the boards of Artisan Partners, Johnson Controls, Western Union and the Committee for Economic Development (CED), while also chairing the Greater Milwaukee Committee’s Future Workforce Committee.

MR. HAROLD “SWANNY” SWANSON
Jeff attributes his confidence and follow-through to the time he spent at Prairie and the guidance of Harold “Swanny” Swanson. The South Milwaukee native was not only coached by Mr. Swanson, but he was driven to and from school each day by this beloved Prairie mainstay. For four years, Jeff was part of the Swanson family commute – and the rides made an indelible impression. “The car rides were legendary,” remembers Jeff. “The Swanson kids and the athletes packed into the car for everything from life lessons, family-like fights, history lessons, tennis strategies or lectures depending on the day. It could have been a television sit-com: Swanny and the South Milwaukeeans.”
MR. DAVE DREWEK
Dave Drewek also had a tremendous impact on Jeff, who was convinced he had no talent for art upon arrival at Prairie. However, under Dave’s guidance, the self-proclaimed jock was named Art Student of the Year two years in a row. “Mr. Drewek’s room was always a cool place to hang out,” muses Jeff. “The multitude of fascinating projects and hands-on activities drew students into learning and helped them hone skills they never knew they possessed.”
MR. DICK “Z” ZIMMERMANN
Sarah Geenen Joerres, a graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin, is a Board Certified Physiatrist dedicated to helping her patients overcome debilitating spine, joint, muscle and nerve pain, effectively changing hundreds of lives for the better. Ever the go-getter, Sarah credits Dick “Mr. Z” Zimmermann with instilling a profound sense of confidence in her. As Sarah recalls, “When I came to Prairie, I knew nothing about audio-visual equipment, but Mr. Z made me feel like I could conquer the world.” Sarah particularly admired Mr. Z’s knack for challenging students and forming personal connections with them. This helped bolster achievement in the classroom and enabled students to excel at subjects they once struggled to understand.

Incito (in-citō)
Latin origin: To set in motion; inspire, encourage.
THE GIFT
The Joerreses first met at Prairie, and the unforgettable experiences and meaningful relationships with these special educators inspired them to establish the Incito Fund for faculty development at the Prairie School. With schools across the country scrambling to attract and retain top-shelf talent, this fund positions Prairie to continue to compete and win in the race for world-class faculty. Drawing its name from the Latin word for “Inspire,” the Incito Fund began with an initial $50,000 gift honoring Harold Swanson, Dick Zimmermann, and Dave Drewek. Faculty beneficiaries of the fund will receive significant awards in support of their professional development. For Prairie’s 50th Anniversary Reunion Weekend, Jeff and Sarah described each honoree in a letter [D] (see next page) that recounted the ways these dedicated teachers had transformed the lives of their students. Jeff and Sarah’s time at Prairie – and their experiences with the Incito Fund’s honorees – inspired them to ensure that future generations of students are able to benefit from the guidance of such outstanding educators. Alumni and friends of The Prairie School are invited and encouraged to join Jeff and Sarah in supporting this worthy effort. Please contact Prairie’s Advancement Office at 262-752-2520 to learn more about the Incito Fund and how you can keep the Prairie dream alive for future generations.

D The Prairie School has been blessed in many ways, but the most outstanding is the lifechanging cast of teachers. Coach Swanson, Mr. Zimmermann and Mr. Drewek are the trifecta of role modeling and inspiration. We regret not being able to be with you tonight, as it would have been uplifting to trade stories. Many students would have been lucky to have one teacher affecting their life so profoundly – we had three. What is most interesting is that each of you are so different yet equally affected us with the same sense of passion, relentlessness and inspiration. Clearly Sarah and I were quite different in our motivations – the valedictorian and the jock. I was fortunate to receive a scholarship to attend Prairie, but I lived in South Milwaukee. Every day Coach Swanson picked me up and took me home for four years. The car rides were legendary. The Swanson kids and the athletes packed into the car for everything from life lessons, family-like fights, history lessons, tennis strategies or lectures depending on the day. It could have been a television sit-com: Swanny and the South Milwaukeeans. Those rides and your selflessness of making the gym available regardless of time has shaped me to this day. Thank you, Coach. When Sarah was in Middle School she was set on a different course because of Mr. Z. He had high expectations yet an authentic empathy that instilled confidence in all of the Middle Schoolers, even the awkward ones like Sarah (her own words). Sarah knew nothing about audiovisual equipment or productions, but that didn’t stop Mr. Z from having Sarah feel like she could conquer the world. His way of challenging and connecting with each student contributed to their academic achievements in other classes. It is no surprise that Mr. Z went on to lead so many areas of Prairie School. Thank you, Mr. Zimmermann. The Art Department at Prairie School is appropriately legendary and that’s because of Mr. Drewek. Mr. Drewek is the epitome of inspiration. A “jock” from South Milwaukee winning the art student of the year two years in a row, now that’s inspiration. The Art Department was clearly the cool place to hang out and it was for good reason – there was a neverending stream of projects and activities that drew you into learning. The construction of the glassblowing rooms, melting Coke bottles for glass (wow, we have come a long way), individual projects and, of course, the historic Haunted House. The massive haunted house also had a side benefit of some alone time with my high school sweetheart. (Sorry, Joe and Nancy.) Thank you, Mr. Drewek. The American writer and teacher, William A. Ward said it best… “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher INSPIRES.” Sarah and I are privileged and honored to establish a fund for the “Incito Award” (the Latin word for inspire) in tribute to Coach Swanson, Mr. Zimmermann and Mr. Drewek for excelling in the classroom and changing lives outside of the classroom. The Incito Award is to be given annually to the teacher(s) who demonstrate the traits and behavior of the three of you. Each Incito Award will fund a significant professional development activity for each recipient. Sarah and I envision this $50,000 gift as only the beginning and we encourage other alums and parents of alums to add to the fund in tribute to Coach Swanson, Mr. Zimmermann and Mr Drewek. A most sincere thanks to all three, Jeff and Sarah

From the Prairie Fund Chair —
Dear Friends: Although I myself am not a Prairie alumna, this school is incredibly important to our family. My husband Chris graduated in the Class of 1989 and our three children – Jacob ‘17, Zach ‘19, and Caitlyn ‘21 – have attended Prairie since their kindergarten days. These connections have made me an enthusiastic chair of the Prairie Fund for the past two years, and I was excited by the prospect of reaching out to friends, alumni, parents and donors to learn more about their reasons for supporting this terrific institution.
“Our donors proved that, once again, we are part of an incredible community that cares deeply about our students.”
Since Chris is a Prairie graduate, he’s been bringing me to alumni celebrations ever since we moved back to Racine, well before our kids were born. I distinctly remember attending one such event when the entire Primary School was decorated in an Under the Sea theme, I believe as part of their Museum Project. To this day, I remember being incredibly impressed by the details of the display: it really felt as though you were walking under the ocean. Prairie has consistently lived up to that initial impression from the minute Jacob (our oldest) started here in 2004. I am amazed by the exposure my kids have to so many aspects of the world – they’re always commenting about things we see and places we visit, and inevitably when I ask, “How do you know about this?” they always say, “We talked about it at school.” It’s comforting to know that they are learning so much – and this is why the Prairie Fund is so important. Prairie is on the cutting edge of education, technology, fine arts, athletics and theater. As a community, we can continue to expand and improve all these aspects of the school through everyone’s ongoing support. Over the course of the past year, I was thrilled to see that support increase – not only in amount, but by participation across almost all categories. From grandparents to alumni to current Prairie moms and dads, our donors proved that, once again, we are part of an incredible community that cares deeply about our students. As with all independent day schools, Prairie is a nonprofit organization that relies on philanthropic dollars to educate every child in the building. Many of the resources we might take for granted – the outstanding field trips, the hands-on science labs, the special guest speakers – are possible only because friends of Prairie make us a priority in their charitable giving. Everyone here is deeply grateful to all of our donors – thanks to you, our faculty is able to continue to provide the excellent education The Prairie School has been known for over the past 50 years. I appreciate your investment in our children! Warmly,

DONOR SPOTLIGHT – CHRIS HOLTERMAN ‘03 Chris Holterman ‘03 has a special connection to The Prairie School. His mother, Wendy Will, was a beloved Spanish teacher for twenty-eight years. Although she passed away in 2009, Chris still donates to a scholarship fund in her name to honor her memory. “Prairie was her life,” he said. “She was devoted to the school. Even at the end of her life, she went to work every day and shared her passion.” Chris’s dual commitment to both his mother’s memory and the school is a reminder of the many ways to support Prairie. While the Prairie Fund supplements everything from faculty development to classroom supplies, there are dozens of ways to make more targeted gifts. For example, the Thank a Teacher Campaign allows alumni and parents to recognize the faculty who impacted their lives the most, while the annual Tee It Up for Kids Golf Classic raises funds for need-based scholarships. Donors may also request that their contributions be used in specific curricular areas such as technology, athletics, for a particular subject or even in one of the three divisions.
Chris directs his gifts to the Wendy Will Scholarship, which goes to an Upper School student enrolled in Spanish. He acknowledges that his contributions aren’t huge – but he gets satisfaction knowing that the money he gives instills his mother’s devotion to learning in students who may never have had her in class. “I went to Prairie for 15 years,” he said. “It was a huge part of my childhood and young adulthood. Teachers like my mother were a big reason that I got a great education, and it’s important that other kids get the same opportunities.”
The Jack Mitchell Society
The Jack Mitchell Society, named for Prairie’s first Head of School, honors those who have made a charitable gift to the Prairie Fund for five or more consecutive years. We appreciate the following donors’ commitment to continuing Jack Mitchell’s legacy by supporting our students with the same loyalty, enthusiasm and generosity of spirit he showed during his tenure.
— Bold print denotes those new to the Jack Mitchell Society in FY 2015

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT – AMY (SMITH) KAREGEANNES ‘94 Purchasing a new home involves dutiful research, careful consideration and trust — both in your final decision and in the person who guided you on your journey. The same could be said for a family contemplating The Prairie School for their child. In each situation, the most important resource is the relationship generated between individuals, and no one understands this better than Amy (Smith) Karegeannes ‘94. A current Prairie parent, Amy is also one of the most well-known realtors in the Racine area. When she and her husband, George, moved back to Racine from Michigan fifteen years ago, the real estate business seemed like an ideal part-time job for a busy parent. Her passion for her new role, though, made her one of the top agents in her office and as her family grew — she now has three daughters, Olivia ‘15, Sophia ‘19 and Ella ‘26 — so did her ability to devote more time to her career. Enthusiasm, positive energy and authenticity have become Amy’s markers for success, and they are evident in every client relationship she pursues. The strengths she displays in her profession are just as valuable at Prairie. Amy has dedicated her spare time to serving as an unofficial Prairie advocate, a volunteer position that really has no end time or day off. She is continuously promoting Prairie, encouraging families new to the area to visit and often taking time out of her day to personally escort a family to campus for a tour. In 2015, Amy became an advisor to the Board of Trustees, a role that testifies to her passion for and dedication to Prairie. Amy also has served on the Prairie Fund committee, educating fellow parents about the importance of giving back to the school. Additionally, she has volunteered for numerous soccer games during Olivia’s time at Prairie and played the part of varsity team mom for Olivia’s senior year in 2015. With her two younger children still at the school, you will likely find Amy assisting with volleyball games for Sophia or attending Ella’s field trips as a chaperone. Amy continuously takes time to make sure those around her feel welcomed and connected — something she sees as a hallmark of the Prairie experience. “There is such a sense of family at Prairie. It’s hard to explain but once you’re there, you feel it.” During her years at The Prairie School, that sense of community began in the classroom, where dedicated faculty made every child a priority — and that same feeling abounds today for her own children. She has come full circle — from student to parent to Prairie advocate, Amy has truly come home.

The Prairie Premiere
A 50th anniversary happens only once in a lifetime, and this year’s Prairie Premiere was a throwback to its founding days in 1965. Guests enjoyed vintage elegance while raising their paddles for the most worthy of the school’s causes: scholarships and financial aid. The 2015 Premiere dinner and auction netted $185,127 for the tuition assistance fund, and none of this would have been possible without the event’s tireless leadership team, the countless student and adult volunteers who worked to make the night a success, and the hundreds of donors and friends whose generosity made this Premiere one for the record books.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT – SANDY & DENNIS KONTRA The youngest of Sandy Kontra’s three children graduated from The Prairie School 25 years ago, but she and her husband Dennis remain steadfast in their financial support. At first, it was because they wanted their grandchildren to have the same opportunities their children had. But when their grandchildren ended up living hundreds – even thousands – of miles away, Sandy and Dennis kept on giving so that those opportunities could go to other people’s grandchildren instead. “Prairie was one of the reasons we chose to come to Racine after Dennis finished his medical residency in Milwaukee,” she said. “Our children were very young, but a friend told us that Prairie was just starting its Early School Program. When we brought Shayla to be tested, we were impressed.”
“Sandy and Dennis kept on giving so that those opportunities could go to other people’s grandchildren.”
The decision to enroll Shayla paid off, as Sandy said all three of her children – Shayla, Gretchen and Paul – attended from Early School through 12th grade and left well prepared for both college and life. Great teachers played an important role. “Shayla teaches math, and she credits her seventh-grade math teacher, Bruce Campbell,” Sandy said. “Of course there were excellent teachers in high school, but he was the one who opened up Shayla’s interest in math.” Shayla went on to earn a master’s degree in mathematics, while Gretchen pursued a law degree and Paul studied economics and geography, earned his master’s degree and served in the Peace Corps before joining the professional world. The Prairie School also provided Sandy’s children with terrific life experiences, such as the spring Interim Program, that exposed them to a broader world and helped mold their character. “There was a trip to France, and one of my kids worked at the Smithsonian Institute for a week,” Sandy said. “One took a trip to the Grand Canyon, and I chaperoned.” She still fondly recalls her children’s days at The Prairie School, and while she won’t necessarily be adding new memories of her own, she’s happy to help other people have the chance to do so. “Dennis and I believe it’s important that we have a school like Prairie in Racine,” she said. “Every community needs strong schools with wonderful teachers and programs that introduce students to a broader world.”
