WHAT IS GENVOYA®? GENVOYA is a 1-pill, once-a-day prescription medicine used to treat HIV-1 in people 12 years and older who weigh at least 77 pounds. It can either be used in people who are starting HIV-1 treatment and have never taken HIV-1 medicines before, or people who are replacing their current HIV-1 medicines and whose healthcare provider determines they meet certain requirements. These include having an undetectable viral load (less than 50 copies/mL) for 6 months or more on their current HIV-1 treatment. GENVOYA combines 4 medicines into 1 pill taken once a day with food. GENVOYA is a complete HIV-1 treatment and should not be used with other HIV-1 medicines. GENVOYA does not cure HIV-1 or AIDS. To control HIV-1 infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses, you must keep taking GENVOYA. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to reduce the risk of passing HIV-1 to others. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body ﬂuids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body ﬂuids on them.

What is the most important information I should know about GENVOYA?

GENVOYA may cause serious side effects: • Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. GENVOYA is not approved to treat HBV. If you have both HIV-1 and HBV and stop taking GENVOYA, your HBV may suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking GENVOYA without ﬁrst talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to monitor your health.

Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to check your kidneys. If you develop new or worse kidney problems, they may tell you to stop taking GENVOYA. • Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat. • Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain. The most common side effect of GENVOYA is nausea. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or don’t go away. •

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking GENVOYA? •

Who should not take GENVOYA?

Do not take GENVOYA if you take: • Certain prescription medicines for other conditions. It is important to ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist about medicines that should not be taken with GENVOYA. Do not start a new medicine without telling your healthcare provider. • The herbal supplement St. John’s wort. • Any other medicines to treat HIV-1 infection. What are the other possible side effects of GENVOYA?

Serious side effects of GENVOYA may also include: • Changes in your immune system. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to ﬁght infections. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any new symptoms after you start taking GENVOYA.

All your health problems. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have or have had any kidney or liver problems, including hepatitis virus infection. Maxine Waters Wins Award for LGBTQ+ Civil Rights and Social Justice Impact On Saturday, October 7, Congresswoman Maxine Waters was honored for her service to California’s LGBTQ+ community by Equality California. Since the early 1970s,Waters has been active in California government and has spoken to national issues concerning civil rights and social justice throughout her career. “Congresswoman Maxine Waters has been an outspoken foe of discrimination and injustice for more than 40 years,” said Rick Zbur, executive director of Equality California. “From fighting apartheid to opposing the Iraq War to supporting LGBTQ civil rights, she has always been one of the most courageous voices in Congress.” Since Trump’s election last year, Waters has also been one of his most vocal opponents. Last week, she encouraged the Republican caucus to “move on impeachment” charges due to the evidence FBI investigations have already presented.At a rally in Los Angeles this June, Waters urged the crowd to fight against Trump’s intolerant stance

Step In, Speak Up! Gives Adults the Tools to Combat LGBTQ+ Teen Bullying in Schools

In Los Angeles, teen bullying targeting gay, lesbian, and queer students has been on the rise for the past few years. A new program helps to arm teachers and counselors with the means to curtail teen bullying.

THE PRIDE: How did this concept come about? Jennifer Spiegler: Kognito launched its first simulation for K12 educators about mental health and suicide prevention in the fall of 2010, the same fall that saw the tragic suicide deaths of Tyler Clementi and several other LGBTQ+ teens across the country. So the idea for a simulation that educated middle and high school personnel specifically about the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ teens really came directly from the heartbreak of those deaths. What were some of the focal points creators wanted to use in speaking to young people through the program? Step In, Speak Up! is a 30-minute online learning experience for middle and high school personnel. We wanted to be sure that these adults understand and have empathy for the experiences of students who are bullied or harassed and that they felt empowered and confident to take action when needed.The actions can be simple, like curtailing the use of biased language every time they hear it or checking in with a student who has been harassed to make sure they are ok.

Was this program influenced by any of the other anti-bullying programs and technologies out there? In fact, our conversation platform is something we had developed and iterated on for several years, and the programs we were developing were gaining traction with educators in both K12 and higher ed. Then we had a great group of experts, educators and youth who were really the subject matter expert panel. Youth from LGBTQ+ community centers who shared their experience were probably the best subject matter experts we could have hoped for. Does the program take into account other issues (bullying for reasons not related to LGBTQ+ identity, etc.) Yes. For example, one of the virtual student coaches in the program, Dani, talks about being teased about her weight. So, yes, it does aim to generalize somewhat around the reasons someone is bullied, but there is a lot of content that is specific to LGBTQ youth, so it provides education to someone who may not already know (or know they know) someone who identifies as LGBTQ+. What does the program’s implementation look like? Usually, a school or school district will decide to use Step In, Speak Up! as part of their professional development programming for teachers and staff. In California, for example, there is new legislation for schools about suicide prevention, AB2246, that specifically calls for addressing the needs of LGBTQ+ youth. So many districts in California are adopting Step In, Speak Up! as part of their AB2246 response. How will the program be used in different parts of the country? The program has already been used across the country – from Virginia to Hawaii – to train over 10,000 teachers and school staff. That’s an amazing number of adults who are better prepared to support LGBTQ+ youth. Locally, Los Angeles Unified School District’s Health Education Unit is using Step In, Speak Up! With school staff to improve their skills and have more tools to deal with all of their students and affirm them all. What’s next for the Kognito team? A set of similar LGBTQ-focused simulations are already in use at many of the California Community Colleges. As for what’s next: workplace simulations around LGBTQ+ and Transgender issues for county government and a major healthcare provider. Stay tuned.

What Did Edmund White Think of Gay L.A. in the ‘70s? In White’s “States of Desire,” Los Angeles comes off as a town full of sexual activity, May – December romances, and perfect bodies.

By the time Edmund White’s travelogue “States of Desire: Travels in Gay America” came out in 1980, the carefree world of unprotected sex and bathhouses he described seeing in his travels was already well on its way out. By the end of 1981, a mere year after “States of Desire” reached audiences, the AIDS epidemic was already reshaping gay life and gay sex, killing 121 gay men by early 1982. The world White chronicled in his travel book would never be the same, and the way of life White by turns appreciated and condemned in “States of Desire” would not be reclaimed until decades later. And even then, not with the same carefree abandon that marked the prelapsarian pre-AIDS era. To read “States of Desire” today is to be bittersweetly reminded of such a time not too far in the past, when rights were being fought for across

the country and sex was being had at a rate to rival that of the Grindr era.White doesn’t just focus on the urban capitals during his journey. He takes in all of America, from the “gay capital” of San Francisco to Salt Lake City, Denver, and the Southernmost tip of Texas. The book’s existence was almost a radical statement:The kind that had already existed for so long at the heart of the movement: In the words of Harvey Milk, “we are everywhere.” Even where you’d least expect us. But White begins his cross-country journey, tellingly, in L.A. In Los Angeles – a city which White calls “a haven for hedonists,” – we see a familiar unfolding of hungry midwestern implants looking get into the movies, predatory producers and directors, and a host of gay-themed films which will never see the light of day, namely “The Front Runner,” an athletic drama which Paul Newman once toyed with producing, and “Good Times/Bad Times,” whose script was written by the author of “A Chorus Line.” White finds much to make fun of Los Angeles, from the politeness of his hosts to the garishness of the city’s strip malls to the endless sunlit days. But he gives Angelenos some credit, especially where cruising is concerned: “For cruising, gays go to Robertson Boulevard between Third Street and Beverly, especially the

little park [West Hollywood Park] where barechested men sun or work out. The leather bars are all on Melrose as is Hardware, the boutique that carries not only the usual slave bracelets and athletic socks but also windbreakers and boxer swimsuits in semi-transparent, bruise-colored sleaze...Griffith Park is cruisy, especially the footpaths near the Greek Theater. Hilldale Street is always busy. But Santa Monica Boulevard remains the Great Tan Way of cruising.” The list of lost L.A. gay bars and cruising spots is almost endless, and kind of tragic, if only for the loss of the names alone. “Among the leather bars, the One Way is druggy, Griff’s is for older numbers, the Stud is good on Sunday afternoons. At Larry’s there is a ball and chain cast down on the bar, but it seems no more authentic than a spinning wheel in a Williamsburg eatery… “My favorite tavern was the Detour, the easier pickup place right now...Boots in pairs are suspended by their laces from the slats over the bar. In one corner hangs a glass ball in which the silhouette of a stagecoach slowly revolves. In the very back is a pool table. There is no room for playing a game since shirtless, sweating men, standing four deep, are boogying in place and sniffing poppers to the disco music… “On Santa Monica, across the street and two

blocks down from Rascals, is the Blue Parrot. Here you can pick up the same beauties who snubbed you at Rascals earlier.” And so on. White also makes mention of the once-mighty L.A. bathhouse scene. The 8709 Club Baths, he says, were the best of the bunch. “These bodies are silken, tan, hairless...In L.A. the body is slender, the buttocks pneumatic with youth, a trail of gold dust shading the hollow just above the coccyx and between the pecs.” Even more fascinating than thinking about how little the L.A. body type has changed (with the addition of a few more bears, one supposes) is considering how drastically everything else White describes has.White’s L.A., full of gay bars, baths, and cruising-only promenades, has made way for a host of cupcake shops, coffee joints, and bars with no known denomination. Of course, the change isn’t all bad – White notes that most gay men in 1970s Los Angeles have had a harrowing run-in with the vice squad – but it’s sobering to think about. When White started writing “States of Desire,” he might not have known that he was documenting a type of history, made of brick-and-mortar locations, transient scenes, and whole city blocks, that was soon to be paved over. Today, the bathhouse is no more, and the gay bar is on its way out, taking decades of L.A.’s history along with it.

Omar Rivero Seeks Democratic Answer to Fox News

Omar Rivero wants to use the same tactics as Fox News to break down the Trump administration.

From the moment, Donald Trump declared, “You’re fake news,” to CNN’s Jim Acosta, the term has had a resurgence unlike any it has ever known. In spite of the fact that the concept has been present ever since ancient Egyptian times when Rameses the Great falsified accounts of the Battle of Kadesh, the idea of fake news in the Trump era is something a bit more volatile. Omar Rivero and his twin brother Rafael started their website Occupy Democrats to offer a flip side to the high conservatism of Fox News. The site is at the forefront of what is being referred to as “hyper-partisan” websites that have become more common in the year since Trump came to power. After reporting on Trump’s decision to ban transgender people from joining the military (a decision that coincided with Hurricane Harvey’s hit) Occupy Democrats saw a standard surge in comments noting the utter lack of coincidence that Trump chose to pass this piece of legislation right when the nation’s eyes were focused on a natural disaster. And though news watchdog PolitiFact has constantly called

out Occupy Democrats for their distortion of events, it’s as the brothers who run it themselves say, “the ‘wild west of journalism’ right now.” Omar and Rafael Rivero, who are both Mexican immigrants, knew that Occupy Democrats would flourish during the Trump presidency. In a highly divided United States, where Democrats and Republicans are left feeling equally betrayed by aspects of American government, the L.A.-based brothers knew they would be able to find an audience, especially when it comes to Trump’s more radical plans for policies concerning the immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities. Rivera defended the sensationalistic methods of Occupy Democrats by remarking, “At some point in American politics, the Rubicon was crossed, and I think that was probably when Roger Ailes launched Fox News… And to put that genie back in the bottle so we all go back to Walter Cronkite–style objective journalism where everyone watches the same news program, that era is over, and for the left to pretend that it's not would be ceding ground.”

Bayard Rustin Led the Fight For Gay Marriage, Years Before It Was Even a Conversation A new documentary celebrates the civil rights leader and gay rights pioneer.

When Walter Naegle first met famous Civil Rights activist Bayard Rustin, he knew he was in love. “I was headed to Times Square,” Naegle told NPR’s StoryCorps in a 2015 interview. “We were on the same corner, waiting for the light to change...He was of my parents’ generation. But we looked at each other and lightning struck.” This was in the 1970s, before the AIDS epidemic devastated New York, and far before the question of gay marriage had come onto the national stage. Though the two were separated in age by more than 30 years, the would end up helping the relationship more

than hurting it. When Rustin and Naegle talked about their future, adoption came up as an alternative to legal marriage. “He was concerned about protecting my rights,” Naegle said, “because gay people had

no protection. At that time, marriage between a same-sex couple was inconceivable. And so he adopted me, legally adopted me, in 1982. That was the only thing we could do to kind of legalize our relationship.” Strange as it might seem today, it wasn’t too uncommon for gay couples to go the adoption route in order to make sure their partners would be taken care of and seen as legitimate family by the government. But Bayard Rustin, as with most things he put his mind to, served as a gay marriage pioneer simply by making sure his young partner was looked after. Up until the end of his life, Rustin was fighting for gay rights. In 1986, only one year before his death, he fought for New York State’s Gay Rights Bill, proclaiming in a speech that: “The question of social change should be framed with the most vulnerable group in mind: gay people.” Filmmaker Matt Wolf, whose previous

projects include 2016’s “The Face of AIDS” and 2010’s “Another Portrait of Jason,” has chosen Rustin and Naegle’s relationship as the subject of his new film, “Bayard and Me.” The Outfest and Sundance hit had its L.A. premiere on October 19, with Wolf and Naegle in attendance. Naegle is now in his late 60s and has dedicated his life to honoring his partner’s legacy and continuing his fight.

Will Next Governor End State Corruption? TOM ELIAS Mirror Columnist

The well-documented corruption in various wings of California state government shows few signs of abating soon. Even though Gov. Jerry Brown’s latest questionable appointees to the state’s powerful Public Utilities Commission have been held up, no one has yet been penalized for several fix-is-in decisions there that are costing consumers billions of dollars. Energy Commission members who handed out many millions of dollars in hydrogen highway grants to cronies with conflicts of interest weren’t punished; they were reappointed. Nothing happened to University of California President Janet Napolitano and her aides who accumulated a $175 million slush fund while students were assessed about that same amount in tuition increases. And so on. Ask any of the three candidates now leading the polls in the run for governor about all this

and you get encomiums to Brown and blanket vows to end corruption, but nothing specific and no sign that any of them understands the extent of sleaziness in state agencies. Said Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a former San Francisco mayor who has led the polls since the run to replace Brown began,“I will not be known for being timid about this or anything else. Gov. Brown says reform is overrated; I say it’s underrated.” Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, running second, noted that “As mayor, my very first executive direction was that city commissioners could not raise money for me or for city council members. Historically, it’s been the opposite. “I believe transparency in government is critical, especially in a time when people don’t trust the government, any government.” Noting that members of the state PUC cannot be fired during their six-year terms, even by the governor who appointed them,Villaraigosa added that “We should look at the ability of the governor to fire PUC members. I had zero tolerance for corruption on any city commission and that’s how I would be in state government, too.” And state Treasurer John Chiang, a former

state controller best known for withholding pay from state legislators when they were late approving a budget, said, “The governor needs to set the high ground on matters of government integrity. We need to hold people accountable. When I’m governor and we find instances of corruption, people will get due process, but they will be responsible for what they and their agencies do.” Chiang, however, noted that a mere accusation of corruption doesn’t mean it occurred. He had some recent experience in this area, when the Sacramento Bee in August reported that a panel he chairs called the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee gave credits and funding to affordable housing builders who contributed to his campaign fund. That committee also includes state Controller Betty Yee and the state finance director, appointed by Brown. “That was untrue and utterly irresponsible (by the Bee),” Chiang declared.“It was sloppy journalism. Every credit approved during my two-and-ahalf years on the committee has been based on a mathematical formula, with professional staff scoring this based on amenities and other features (of the planned housing). The three-members followed staff recommendations in every

single case. No one deviated from the formula. I’ve worked hard to keep things completely fair.” But none of these candidates spoke specifically about any of the known cases of corruption in state government, nor did any of them commit to trying to ferret out more. If they can’t or won’t be specific about making fixes while they’re mere candidates, it’s anyone’s guess how they might behave if and when they take office. What’s clear is that the current corruption takes many forms, but does not often see state employees directly line their pockets. Yet, there are plenty of revolving-door examples, where regulators later go to work for the companies they’ve helped. There are also instances of cronies influencing state officials, as when former Gov. Gray Davis, a onetime Brown chief of staff, lobbied Brown to grant hydraulic fracking permits to his client, the Occidental Petroleum Corp., and those permits were granted after officials who originally sought to deny them were fired. So here’s one question each candidate for governor should be asked when debates begin before next June’s primary election: Exactly what will you do to change the climate of corruption that’s persisted for many years under several governors?

able to themselves and their parents to make the process of growing up filled with positivity and acceptance rather than fear and shame. But what happens to those of us who came out before the current wave of political visibility? For many of us, it seems like our childhood wasn’t a childhood at all. Is there any way for us to get it back? Rocco Kayiatos thinks so. This year, the artist, musician, and creator decided it was time for men of trans experience to get a shot at having bona fide summer camp adventure, complete with outdoor activities, fireside chats, and bunk beds. Camp Lost Boys is a three day, two night camp located in the mountains near Big Bear outside of L.A. “It’s traditional summer camp, combined with conversations about maleness and intentional masculinity.” Says Kayiatos. “We have fireside chats, but apart from that it’s all like, high ropes courses, archery, paintball, hiking, mountain biking. Arts and crafts, all traditional summer camp activities.” The camp runs from October 27 to 29 of this year, and is the first time Camp Lost Boys will open its doors. Registration, which tops out at 100 people, filled up quickly, with trans men over 34 making up most of the campers. Kayiatos and the other organizers even made sure that some of the campers were able to attend free, on scholarship. “I transitioned 17 years ago, and there were no resources for me at all.” Says Kayiatos, who previously worked in Buzzfeed’s Video Education Department and is the co-creator of Original Plumbing Magazine, a zine created for and by trans men. “There was no community building place, there was no Internet presence of trans people, there was really nothing. So now, because we live in a different world, less than two decades later, there are so many resources, and the focus tends to be really heavy on nurturing trans children and making sure they feel comfortable and safe. I’m so grateful kids don’t have to go through that dark age that I went through, but I’m also crying for my own childhood that I missed out on in some way, and feeling a little bit resentful that there was nothing for me as a kid, or when I was coming of age, to help guide me or make me feel comfortable.” Today, several camps exist specifically for transgender and gender nonconforming children. Those who are lucky enough to attend get to experience a classic childhood rite of passage without having to compromise their gender identity or hide who they are. “There’s this focus on making things avail-

able for kids. So I was like, I’m going to make a traditional kid’s summer camp for adult men that never got to go to summer camp.” Camp Lost Boys, in addition to being focused on traditional camp activities, provides adults with a way to bond with each other outside of the Internet, something that’s becoming increasingly important – and unheard of – for younger members of the trans community who grew up having YouTube, Instagram, and Tumblr as community resources. Camp Lost Boys also enlisted the help of pioneers and influencers to guide fireside chats about mindful masculinity, such as activist and model Aydian Dowling and health care activist Jamison Green. “I feel passionately about creating this intentional curated space for people, particularly thinking about how [culturally] it feels so volatile right now. It adds value through asking people to unplug and connect to nature, and asking people to connect to what it means to have a real community. And once I saw how excited all these guys were to have this space, I got this other outreach from people who were like, “man, I wish this existed for people who weren’t trans men, because I want to come to a camp like this.” So I was like, fuck it, I’ll create another camp.” The new camp, which will include folks who

fall outside the transmasculine spectrum, will launch in April of 2018. Meanwhile, more plans for retreats and sleepaway camp experiences keep growing. “My friend and I want to have a sleepaway camp that’s also a kind of reimagining of a business conference. For artists and misfits and outsiders who didn’t win the ovarian lottery. It will give them access in another way. We’ll get influencers and entrepreneurs come and talk about how they built their business, how they made their way through Hollywood as a queer woman. It will be a very different thing, but the same principles of granting access and providing a space to unplug and plug back into who you are and who your values are.” In a city like L.A., it can be hard to find a community, and even harder to find the time to break away from the Internet long enough to see where you really are. Camp Lost Boys, by providing a safe, open space for trans men, helps to reclaim the carefree boyhood experience that so many of us never dreamed of living out loud.

They may even cause an intestinal blockage if your pet eats them. This includes any movable props, hanging decorations, garlands, and lights. Also, be respectful of their timid personalities and don’t put up anything that may frighten them. Some of us may like a good scare, but pets prefer to keep their lives boo-free! Outfest Parts Ways With Weinstein Company Following the allegations of sexual abuse, Outfest has decided to cut ties with the Weinstein brothers.

Harvey Weinstein has undergone quite the fall from grace since the beginning of October. He lost his job first, followed quickly by his wife. Then, the Academy of Motion Pictures joined the conga line procession out the door, along with virtually all of Hollywood. Now, he’s lost LGBTQ+ support. According to organizers of the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project’s annual Legacy Awards – a gala fundraiser dedicated to entertainment industry figures who “made a profound and lasting impact on LGBT storytelling and the LGBT community” – the Weinstein Company will no longer be an honoree at the October 22 event. The company was scheduled to receive a Vanguard Award, but Weinstein officials with-

drew themselves from the ceremony in light of the recent controversy surrounding the co-founder, according to Outfest Executive Director Christopher Racster. Harvey Weinstein had already been ousted from his own company after revelations by The New York Times of decades of sexual misconduct, ranging from harassment to rape. Nonetheless, according to a message received by Racster, the Weinstein company did not want to distract attention away from the event. “Because we wholeheartedly support Outfest and its mission to preserve LGBTQ cinema, we have decided to withdraw from The Legacy Awards at this time,” the message read. “We do not want to overshadow the extraordinary achievements of the other honorees.” Instead, actress Rita Moreno and actress and activist Laverne Cox will take center stage without the Weinstein Company. “Both of these women have fought and stood up for the basic human rights of all people to be treated fairly, especially within a culture in Hollywood that has at times dis-

Leisha Hailey on “Dead Ant” and That L Word Reboot…

The “Silicon Valley” and “L Word” actor stars in the wackiest horror-comedy of the year.

If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that anytime Leisha Hailey appears on screen is a time to sit up and take notice. Hailey can raise any film or TV show to a level of genius simply by gracing it with her presence. From her famous portrayal of Alice Pieszecki on “The L Word” (i.e. the only “L Word” character we never once wanted to strangle) to her work on “Bosch” and “Silicon Valley” to her musical career as half of the band “Uh Huh Her,” Hailey never disappoints. Her recent turn in Ron Carlson’s horror-comedy “Dead Ant,” about a struggling glam rock band and a peyote trip gone wrong, is no exception. We spoke to Hailey about giant ants, Lita Ford, and “The L Word’s” impending return. THE PRIDE: How’d you get involved with “Dead Ant?” Leisha Hailey: As an actor you read a lot of scripts and this one really caught my eye. I thought the premise was so ridiculous and funny. It was based in music, which I obviously know and love. I just thought the comedy was great, everything about it I loved. Just one of the weirdest scripts I’ve ever read. It’s a great cast. It kind of reminds me of a Christopher Guest ensemble. Yeah! Have you done horror before? Yes. I actually never was really into the genre as a viewer, but now that I’ve done a few movies I’m into it. This one in particular, it’s horror and comedy, which is pretty brilliant. Were you psyched to be playing a musician? One of the things I really liked about the character and the band is that they were has-beens. Just the mere fact that they weren’t doing anything for over 20 years, it really rang true to my heart. It’s like, you can really make it in one part of your career, and then here you are, this struggling band, and you’re really trying to make your comeback. I identified a lot with that. It kind of reminds me of “The Commitments.” That down-and-

out spirit, Like ‘we’ve still got it!’ Yeah. That’s kind of the magical part: The soul of this movie is less about the ants and more about the heart of the band. The giant attack ants are kind of an afterthought. Exactly. It reminded me of Alice [Pieszecki’s] grunge band phase on “The L Word.” As if your “Dead Ant” character [Stevie] was Alice if she’d stuck with music. That’s funny. That badass rocker chick who’s just like, all in. Yeah. I tried to loosely base Stevie on Lita Ford. She was my main inspiration for this. Is that something you do for all your roles? This was pretty specific to researching the role. I just wanted to get the mannerisms and the way she spoke.

Are there other things you’re super excited about coming up? I’m really looking forward to the “L Word” reboot. That’s one that’s definitely

Autism Speaks Fashion Gala to Benefit Southern California Chapter

When it comes to autism awareness in the LGBTQ+ community, we have a long way to go. “Similar to LGBTQI+ people who lived through the hostile 1970s, '80s, and '90s,” wrote activist Louis Molnar earlier this year in an Op-Ed for the Advocate, “autistics now are timid survivors who often live unidentified and very often ignorant of what we are because a nascent autism science still very often sees us as sick or broken.” For this and many other reasons, the Into the Blue Fashion Gala benefitting the Southern California chapter of Autism Speaks combines championing a good cause with honoring those who have positively advocated for autism. Punk Icon Alice Bag Helps With Relief in Mexico and Puerto Rico When L.A. Punk legend Alice Bag set out to help with relief aid in Mexico and Puerto Rico following a massive earthquake and hurricane, she left no stone unturned. A key fixture in the first wave of punk that transformed L.A. into a trailblazing musical hub in the 70s, Bag’s iconoclastic ways were put to good use on the punk stage as frontwoman for her band, The Bags. Now, Bag has turned her focus toward activism. Teaming with Lysa Flores and Rudy Bleu for the event, called TURN IT UP!, Bag expressed that the disasters in both regions have affected her on a personal level, commenting, “...these are members of my communities. I wanted to engage my friends in doing something productive together for somebody else." Using an LGBTQ+ Cast, Invertigo Dance Theater Prepares to Bring Alan Turing’s Story to Life For almost a decade now, the curious, painful story of 20th-century genius Alan Turing has held a prominent place in the cultural mindset. Turing, as an ahead-ofhis-time mathematician responsible for creating the same artificial intelligence we now use for computers, made a lasting contribution to 20th and 21st-century life. He helped crack Nazi codes during the second World War and was celebrated for his many achievements, until his homosexuality was disclosed after the war. Then a criminal offense, the disclosure of Turing’s sexuality forced him to undergo mandatory “corrective” treatments that included estrogen injections and chemical castration at the British government’s insistence. Homosexuality in Britain wouldn’t be decriminalized until 1967. Turing committed suicide after two years of this treatment, in 1954, by cyanide poisoning. Turing’s martyrdom has been the source of inspiration for countless works of art, many of them quite recent. In 2011, the artist Henrik Olesen used Turing as the

inspiration for a site-specific project at MoMA. In 2012, an exhibit in World War II’s code-cracking center Bletchley Park honored Turing’s contribution to the war effort. In 2014, Turing’s story got big screen treatment in “The Impossible Game,” a film that starred Benedict Cumberbatch as the pioneering mathematician. Now, Santa Monica’s Moss Theater is about to be presented with 30 minutes of a new ballet set to run for the 2018/19 season, based on Turing’s life. “Formulae and Fairy Tales” is a reimagining of the Turing tragedy, set to music. The Los Angeles-based dance company Invertigo Dance Theater is celebrating its 10year anniversary with “Formulae and Fairy Tales” on October 22. The 30-minute piece will serve as a teaser for the larger production, which is still in development. Using an LGBTQ+ cast and featuring choreography and direction by Invertigo founder Laura Karlin, “Formulae” will mix aspects of Turing’s life with the story of his “favorite film,” Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven

Dwarfs.” When Turing took his own life, he chose to eat an apple poisoned with cyanide. Invertigo’s interpretation of the Turing story uses this detail as a way to tie Turing’s in-

ternal life to the structure of the classic fairytale. For Invertigo’s 10th anniversary, the dance theater is mining this cruel, instructive moment in history to envision the future of dance, politics, and new American

“The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson” Reopens Old Wounds

For all the art that’s been made about transgender activist Marsha P. Johnson, it’s astounding how little we actually know about her. As one of the original queens who fought at the Stonewall Riots, Johnson has solid place in history and, as a historical figure, has been interpreted by many artists and writers in the nearly 30 years since her mysterious death by drowning. Recent years have seen these interpretations almost double. We had 2016’s “Happy Birthday Marsha,” a short film about the few hours before Johnson’s death on July 6, 1992. That same year, we got a “Drunk History” episode honoring Marsha’s involvement in the Stonewall Riots and the creation of STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) with transgender activist and icon Sylvia Rivera. Around the same time, “Transparent” director Rhys Ernst made an episode just about Johnson and STAR for his “We’ve Been Around” docu-series about trans lives that have been swept under the rug of history. And now, we have David France’s full-length, Netflix-funded documentary, “The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson,” a film that seeks to do a more thorough, independent investigation of Johnson’s death than the original detectives on the job. Was Johnson killed by the mob in retaliation for her friend’s efforts to take away their control of the Gay Pride Parade in the early 90s? Was she killed by a John? Was her death, as the coroner proclaimed, truly a suicide? By putting trans activist and New York Anti-Violence Project employee Victoria Cruz on the task, France hoped to find out.

A noble effort, to be sure, but there’s a problem. In fact, there are a few problems. The first is a controversy that came to light a few weeks ago, when Black trans activist Reina Gossett, whose research, interviews, and extensive scholarship surrounding Johnson’s life and work formed the basis of “Happy Birthday Marsha,” claimed that

France had taken said research without permission to produce his film in collaboration with Netflix. The second problem is the placement of “Death” before “Life” in the film’s title, something which famed trans performer Anohni was quick to point out, saying: “...I find even the title of the new film about Marsha P. Johnson offensive in that it places her death in front of the glory that was Marsha's courageous life. The film excludes critical facts about Marsha's status as someone living with AIDS, presumably because it doesn't support the filmmaker's theatrical narrative. This is the way that underground stories are manipulated to enter the marketplace and become myths.” But the third and least-discussed issue that viewers may find with the film itself is a critical lack of information that draws us, continually, away from the film’s actual sub-

ject: Marsha herself. Not her death, not her celebrity. Her life. France’s documentary is a well-made film, and it does well by placing Cruz at the center, telling its story through Cruz’s own search for justice and truth. Yet when it comes to Marsha, we’re barely given enough information to know which pronoun to use. The film’s interviewees go back and forth between ‘he’ and ‘she’ pronouns, and if there’s a moment where Marsha ever describes herself as, in the parlance of the time, a “transsexual,” we’re not made privy to it. This is curious, especially during the moment when the film tries to tie Marsha’s possible murder to the 2016 murder of Islan Nettles, a trans woman who was beaten to death, and whose murderer received a sentence of twelve years in prison. Nettles was born in 1992, the year Johnson died. None of this is to say that France’s activism is not good, interesting, or worthy of being seen. It is. But when it comes to a figure like Johnson who has come, in the past few years alone, to represent so much for the queer community and speak to its oft-forgotten history, the story will never feel fully told.
