DTLA Trans Rights Rally in in Response to DHHS Memo

In response to the Trump Administration’s latest consideration to repeal basic civil rights for the trans community, the TransLatina Coalition organized a rally in Downtown L.A. last week. “Trump is yet again planning a dangerous attack against our community on a federal level,” the Facebook event page reads. “But, like we always have, we are going to fight back for the rights and respect that we deserve. Trans and gender non-conforming people are deserving of equal treatment to those that are cisgender and we must stop being defined as 'Other' or mentally ill.” The New York Times reported on Oct. 21 that the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is “spearheading an effort to establish a legal definition of sex under Title IX.” DHHS argued in a memo that the NY Times reportedly obtained that government agencies needed to adopt an explicit and uniform definition of gender that’s based on a biological basis that’s grounded in science and is “objective and administrable.” “Sex means a person’s status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth,” the department proposed in the memo, as reported by the NY Times. “The sex listed on a person’s birth certificate, as originally issued, shall constitute defin-

itive proof of a person’s sex unless rebutted by reliable genetic evidence.” A law such as this would essentially eradicate and discredit the estimated 1.4 million Americans who recognize themselves as a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth. “As Mayors we value the unique contributions and basic humanity of all our constituents,” Mayors Against LGBT Discrimination, a nonpartisan coalition, said.“Transgender people are our neighbors, coworkers, friends, and family members, and they deserve to live their lives with dignity and respect. This proposal flies in the face of our nation’s values and poses a very real threat to the safety and wellbeing of transgender Americans across the country. We denounce this mean-spirited attack and stand with our transgender neighbors on behalf of fairness, respect, and freedom for all.” The NY Times reported that a law such as this would be the “most significant” move in a series of decisions attacking queer civil rights granted during the Obama Administration era. “What we are experiencing today, many of us have experienced it before and throughout history,” The DTLA rally event page reads. “Do not get discouraged, but this is a wake up call to solidarity.”

A TIME FOR CELEBRATION

` ⚫ BY STAFF WRITER

Palm Springs is Ready for Pride! Are You? What better way to end LGBT History Month than with a Pride Festival for the books.

That’s right, it is finally time for the highly anticipated Greater Palm Springs Pride! Taking place several months after most Pride celebrations around the United States, this LGBTQ+ event taking place this weekend is certainly not one to forget. This year’s theme is “Youth Power for Change,” drawing from the inspiring youthled movement building efforts during critical times. The next generation is awakening critical conversations in society and politics, and Palm Springs Pride is ready to celebrate that. “Empowered youth are at the forefront of building a national movement that can shape public policy for generations,” a press release stated. “While we believe youth who are empowered will change the world, we are re-

minded that youth have historically been on the frontlines of social change…” Two youths, Gina Villalobos and A’res Rey Flores, have been designated Grand Marshal representatives and will lead the youth contingent in the Pride parade. “It’s inspiring to see the number of teens and tweens who are standing up and saying ‘enough!’ to intolerance, discrimination and gun violence,” Greater Palm Springs Pride President Ron deHarte said in a press release. “After all, Pride is, and always has been, a show of resistance. Resistance to discrimination, resistance to hatred. Resistance to fear, to violence. As we honor those who have courageously fought for equality and are no longer with us, we welcome the support and strength of the next generations.” Inspired by youth-led movements for social change, this year’s lineup will host a diverse group of young and eclectic artists including dancers, singers, musicians, activists, comedians and DJs. The free two-day festival features Madame Gandhi, a Los Angeles-based electronic music artist and activist who pro-

Izzy’s Deli: Making Deli Dreams Come True Santa Monica staple celebrates 45th anniversary.

Izzy still has the original IZZY’S DELI menu from 1973, when the restaurant opened. 45 years later, while a pastrami sandwich may no longer cost $1.70, and the name has changed from “Kenny’s” to “Izzy’s,” not much else has changed at this iconic Santa Monica restaurant on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and 15th Street. “Our food is prepared by the same family of chefs since 1973,” said owner Izzy Freeman. In addition to serving top-notch, overstuffed “New York style” pastrami sandwiches 24/7, one constant at Izzy’s Deli is Izzy Freeman, who can be found most days greeting the customers and making sure that every item is the highest quality and served perfectly. Izzy, known as “The Deli Lama” was born and raised in Brooklyn and moved with his family to Los Angeles in 1953. “The big sandwiches, the pickles, the smells and tastes, they were part of my childhood,” Izzy said. “I dreamt that one day I would own a deli.” Izzy opened the Deli in 1973 with Kenny Horowitz. At the time, Izzy owned two IHOPS in Los Angeles and the intent was for Kenny

to run the Deli and Izzy to run the IHOPS. “I helped him open the deli on Monday morning and I never left,” Izzy said. Izzy’s was the first major deli in Santa Monica in many years, and from the start it was a success. Customers were waiting in line for overstuffed corned beef and pastrami sandwiches, matzo ball soup, freshly roasted turkeys and of course the best New York style rye bread. In the decades since, the popularity of the Deli has only increased, being featured multiple times on Larry David’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and winning numerous awards including “Best Designed Restaurant” to “Best All Night Restaurant.” In August, Izzy’s celebrated its 45th Anniversary and while much has changed in Santa Monica over the years, walking into Izzy’s is like stepping into a delicious-smelling time capsule. A number of the waiters and waitresses have been working at the Deli since the day they opened and several second-generation family members are also working at Izzy’s. “There are some good restaurants in Santa Monica but they come and go and so does the staff. At Izzy’s, everybody knows the customers. Some people come in here every single day,” Izzy said. Over the years, Izzy’s has served loyal customers nearly 5,000,000 matzo balls, 6,000,000 kosher pickles and 3,000,000

corned beef sadwiches on rye. Celebrities from all walks of life have come into Izzy’s to enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert, with their photos donning the deli’s walls on Izzy’s Celebrity Wall of Fame. “45 years is an accomplishment,” Izzy said.

“After 45 years, my customers and employees are like family.” To find out more about Izzy’s Deli, visit their website at izzysdeli.com, call (310) 394-1131 or just walk in, say hello and grab a delicious meal. They are located at 1433 Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica.

Coming Out Community Picnic in Long Beach this weekend was more than just another queer event; it was an opportunity to connect with other LGBTQ+ parents like themselves. “I enjoy ‘Pride,’ or a night out at a bar as much as the next person,” Koontz said. “But sometimes it can feel like that is the entire, sort-of, gay experience. So I think having events like this show a different side and help people meet each other and connect. [Events like these] are a really good part of having a fuller life and having some connection to other gay people.” The couple, who have been married for three years and adopted their first infant son five months ago, relayed that they were excited to be at an event with the potentiality of meeting other LGBTQ+ families. “When I was a gay young man I did not have any prospect of having a child,” Duong said.“So I think I did not see that when I was younger. I think events like this kind-of normalize it and help introduce younger LGBTQ+ folks to understand that there is more than partying.” The event was a collaborative event hosted by the Long Beach LGBTQ+ Center and nine other organizations on Saturday. It was hosted at Houghton Park in North Long Beach and provided guests with a plethora of resource tables from varying LGBTQ+ organizations, free food and beverages, to interactive activities for kids, live music and an environment aimed at promoting inclusivity. “We know that the LGBTQ+ community still has a long road ahead to achieve true equity and true equality and the stronger we are as a community, the stronger a force we are throughout the community and throughout the United States,” Porter Gilberg, Executive Director of the Long Beach LGBTQ+ Center, said. “This is just one opportunity for folks to come out, recharge, make some friends, have a good time and pick up the fight tomorrow.” Although the event was coined as a “Coming Out” picnic, the event was not necessarily aimed at promoting undisclosed LGBTQ+ people to publicly identify as a member of the community. “I don’t think we ever promote coming out for people — that’s a very personal journey,” Joel Gemino, Youth Services Manager for the LB LGBTQ+ Center, said. “When I hear ‘Coming Out’ picnic, I hear we come out for each other, not necessarily coming out about your identity, but we are here for each other.” Although Gemino interpreted the event’s name in a community-centric manner, others present at the event viewed the picnic through a different lens. For example, Ryan McGinty and his partner Assaf Weinberg, two Federal Club Coaches tabling for the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, provided guests with helpful resource guides to coming out. The guides included helpful tips for closeted LGBTQ+ members such as: “There is no one right or wrong way to come out. It’s a lifelong process of being ever more open and true with yourself and others — done in your own way and in your own time.”

Families came out for fun & food at the second annual Coming Out Community Picnic, hosted by the Long Beach LGBTQ+ Center.

“For me, it was about worrying what other people thought and worrying that you wouldn’t be accepted by your friends and family,” McGinty said in terms of his own coming out experience. “[However] it was the best thing I ever did — I wish I did it earlier.” The picnic was strategically planned at Houghton Park in North Long Beach, rather than an area closer to Downtown Long Beach, to highlight the reality that LGBTQ+ people are dispersed throughout the city and not all of them live in, for example, a few specific gay-friendly neighborhoods. “The gay community in Long Beach is not restricted to Broadway or Fourth Street. There are gay families that live right here in this community,” Otis Hogan, Board Member of the Long Beach LGBTQ+ Center, said. “I think it’s good to get events, in a situation like this, away from that defined area — what you think of as the ‘gay community.’” Furthermore, the event aimed to raise awareness of the countless LGBTQ+ assistance programs available to the community through an array of resource tables. The organizations present at the picnic included Gay For Good – an LGBTQ+ organization aimed at providing various social welfare and environmental service projects – and the Long Beach Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, a networking and support organization for LGBTQ-owned businesses. AIDS Walk Long Beach, the Long Beach LGBTQ+ Center’s next event, will take place on Nov. 11, at 10 a.m., starting at Alfredo’s Beach Club. All proceeds gathered from the event will be given to Long Beach organizations serving members of the LGBTQ+ community affected by HIV. 246,097 Slices of Pizza: Eataly L.A. Turns One Italian culinary center's delicious first year.

154,775 cups and cones of gelato, 246,097 slices of Pizza Alla Pala, 89,868 loaves of bread, 53,740 shots of espresso (not including cappuccinos, lattes or Americanos). These numbers are not from a neighborhood in Rome. They are the first year sales at Eataly, the Italian culinary emporium in Century City, which celebrates its first anniversary on Saturday, November 3. For both diners and home-cooks in Los Angeles, Eataly has become the go-to destination for all Italian culinary matters. From literal top to bottom, the three-story food heaven's first year confirmed to Westsiders that Italian food was more than just pizza and pasta. From Terra, the rooftop terrace centered around a wood-burning Italian grill to La Piazza, serving traditional Italian staples in a "town square" environment, Eataly has redefined the concept of an eatery on the Westside. All the ingredients used in the kitchens of the restaurants at Eataly come from its marketplace, allowing ambitious diners the opportunity to recreate their meal. In fact, those inspired by the chefs at Eataly can act on their inspiration and enroll in the

in-store culinary school La Scuola. In the first year, 2,800 students educated in La Scuola, who learned to make pasta, pizza, desserts and more. Over the past year, an impressive array of celebrities have visited Eataly to experience the joys of Italian food, including Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Bradly Cooper, John Legend & Chrissy Teigen, Sophia Bush, Melissa McCarthy, and Katie Holmes. To celebrate their one-year anniversary, Eataly is throwing a party on Saturday, November 3. Stop by to celebrate and you'll be treated to a complimentary glass of Ferrari Trento sparkling wine. Then, the party will peak at 4 p.m. with the cutting of a giant cake made by the Eataly pastry team. And who knows? There just might be some singing. Navigating the Holiday Buffet Like a Pro With Barbara Bishop

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I usually start the holiday feast at a specialty food store in Houston with my sister in law. Then we cook for two days straight. Homemade cranberry sauce (two kinds), home made rolls, at least three pies – pumpkin, pecan and chocolate. Brining the turkey. Boiling potatoes. Cutting green beans. Peeling the sweet potatoes. And that’s just the first day. The day of Thanksgiving, we’re cooking everything. Pies, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, melting the marshmallows on the sweet potatoes. The turkey went in the oven first. Over the years, I was bestowed the title of “Master Baster.” Ha ha. Here’s the issue. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, the average American gains almost two pounds at Thanksgiving, and half that weight will still be around come summertime. Over a decade, that’s 12 pounds to start. Shoot. And that’s just Thanksgiving! “Beautiful Bodies” Author Kimberly Rae Miller offers tips to get through the holiday season. Don’t Eat: • Pigs in a Blanket: high in fat salt and carbs. • Fried cheese balls: High fat and small (easy

In Moderate Amounts: • Cheese and crackers – Be careful though they are calorie dense and too easy to eat. • Once a Year Favorites – Go ahead and have the homemade gravy with the mashed potatoes, but again in a small amount. • Dessert – Allow yourself one item from the dessert bar. Robot Food Delivery Comes to Westwood

Kiwi Campus is now serving UCLA and the Westwood Village area.

The future is here. Food delivery services are growing exponentially in popularity, making it easier for anyone to eat virtually anything they want without having to leave the comfort of their home. Companies like Postmates make on average 2 million deliveries per month, generating an estimated $280 million per year. Kiwi Campus aims to revolutionize the food delivery market by venturing into unchartered territory and offering something no other company has: using robots to make deliveries. Users simply download the mobile application, available for iOS and Android, place an order, and wait for a Kiwibot to deliver their order. Kiwi Campus Business Development Manager Stephanie Falla hopes to make an impact in the food delivery industry by offering users a more cost-effective option to other pricier services. “What we want to do with Kiwi is to democratize the food delivery service. Nowadays, it’s a luxury having something delivered to your doorstep. With the Kiwibots and economies of scale, we want to get to a cost as little as possible, as little as zero.” The on-demand startup originated at UC

Bird and Lime scooters, although increasingly popular, have been knocked over, thrown in public trash bins, and even tossed into the ocean. Some worry that Kiwibots may face similar issues and more. Despite the challenges, few can deny that Kiwi has brought something new and refreshing to the food delivery business. Cinema Italian Style Returns to the Westside Bringing the best of contemporary Italian filmmaking to the Westside.

Westsiders know that Santa Monica is a great place to dine on Italian food, shop for fine Italian fashion and spot some impressive Italian sports cars. What many may not know, however, is every year Santa Monica becomes the premier location in the country to experience the joys of Italian cinema. Every November Santa Monica is home to Cinema Italian Style, a five-night film festival that celebrates contemporary Italian cinema and filmmakers. The 2018 Cinema Italian Style is the 14th annual festival and is highlighted by Marcello Fonte (Best Actor, Cannes Film Festival) and Italian actress, turned director,Valeria Golino presenting her recent film "Euphoria." “We are very proud of this year’s diverse lineup of films” said Roberto Cicutto, President and CEO of Luce Cinecittà.“ They represent the wide breadth of stories being told in contemporary cinema in Italy, while remaining rooted in the tra-

ditions of the great Italian classics." The event kicks off on November 13th at the Egyptian Theatre with a screening of Italy’s submission to the 2019 Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film category, Matteo Garrone’s "Dogman".The event then heads to Santa Monica November 15-18 at the Aero Theater on Montana Avenue. The Santa Monica screenings will showcase the very best of Italian cinema and with an eclectic range of genres, there is something here for everybody. "Boys Cry" (2018), directed by twin brothers Damiano and Fabio D'Innocenzo, tells the story of two best friends living on the outskirts of Rome who accidentally run someone over, only to find out the man was a mafia informer. The friends, played by Matteo Olivetti and Andrea Carpenzano, decide to use the incident to impress the local mafia and end up getting more than they bargained for. This film will be screened as the second part of a November 16 double feature beginning at 7:30 p.m. Another thrilling film, "Naples in Veils" (2018) screened at 7:30 p.m. on November 17th, follows Arianna, a medical examiner who falls for a man at a party only to discover his corpse at the mortuary a few days later.Adriana, played by Giovanna

Mezzogiorno, spots the man (Alessandro Borghi) on the subway and a psychological thriller ensues. The family-centered comedy/drama "There's No Place Like Home" (2018), from Gabriele Muccino, director of "The Pursuit of Happyness", will surely be a crowd pleaser. In this film, which will be screened November 15 at 7:30 p.m., an extended family celebrates the 50th anniversary of grandparents on an island off the Italian coast. A storm, however, traps the three generations for two days and long-simmering family issues begin to surface, and dramedy ensues. These films, just a few of the dozens that will be showcased at the Aero, are all examples of a rich and vibrant film industry that exists in Italy. Laurent Boyé, a spokesperson for the Cinema Italian Style, says that while people are aware of classic Italian filmmakers like Federico Fellini and Sergio Leone, many people are not aware of contemporary Italian filmmakers, which is a shame because of the quality their movies. “When people think about Italian movies they think about Fellini and all the great filmmakers of the neorealist period. They are all great films but they are dated and speak more to a post-World War II Italy, then the Italy of today. Unfortunately, people don’t realize there are a lot of Italian con-

GAY L.A.

How Lesbian Filmmaker Transformed the Industry During a time when filmmaking was all about grit, the all-but-out Dorothy Arzner rose to the top. Early Hollywood was full of ambitious women intent on putting their mark on the new, controversial filmic art. From film pioneer Lois Weber, to comedian Mable Normand, to Alice Guy-Blache, to young screenwriter (and eventual “Gentleman Prefer Blondes” author) Anita Loos, Hollywood was bursting with female talent in the 1910s and ‘20s. Of course, this was long before Hollywood was the tourist trap we know it to be. In the early days of film, almost anyone could do the job of directing, whether they’d had experience or not. With so many women finding important roles in front of the camera, it came as no surprise that many of them should find an even more fulfilling place behind it, at the true center of the action.

Katherine Hepburn in Arzner’s “Christopher Strong” (1933)

Sadly, however, the days of early feminist filmmaking gave way, rather quickly, to an atmosphere of men (and only men) behind the camera. As filmmaking because lucrative and even prestigious, men found themselves fighting for the job. Women, once more, found themselves in front of the lens, at the mercy of the newly-refined male gaze. For one woman, however, it was a much different story. Dorothy Arzner wasn’t only one of the few female directors whose career survived past the ‘10s and into the 1940s. She was also a woman who led a pretty transparent lesbian existence in early Hollywood. Born in San Francisco in 1897, Arzner and her family relocated to Los Angeles when she was still a kid. Once there, she quickly found her way into the picture business, starting first as a stenographer, then a screenwriter, then a film editor on such masterpieces as 1919’s “Too Much Johnson” (yes, it’s real).Though movie mogul Louis B. DeMille made the assumption that Arzner’s gender meant that she was angling for an acting career, Arzner eventually made it clear that she wanted to direct. She got her chance with a 1927 film (now lost) called “Fashions for Women.” She would go on to direct Clara Bow

in the early talkie “The Wild Party,” Lucille Ball in “Dance, Girl, Dance,” and Katherine Hepburn in the gender-bending, thinly-veiled Amelia Earhart biopic “Christopher Strong,” in which Hepburn takes on the role of a female pilot. In between all this, Arzner stayed busy between the sheets. She managed to have affairs with some of the most notorious actresses of the day, including Alla Nazimova (who had staged an all-queer film production of Oscar Wilde’s “Salome” in 1923) and Billie Burke, who would later go onto play Glinda the Good Witch in “The Wizard of Oz.” Arzner eventually settled down with the choreographer Marion Morgan. They lived together for 40 years, until Morgan’s death in 1971. Arnzer would outlive her by eight years. At the end of her life, Arnzer made training films for the military and taught filmmaking at her Alma Mater, UCLA. Though she’d stopped making films in the early '40s – her last was the war film “First Comes Courage” in 1943 – she left on her own terms, retiring with her partner to live out their lives far from the noise and clamor of Hollywood.

Entertainment for the 'Undocuqueer'

“When have you ever seen an openly queer and undocumented person in Hollywood? Never, that’s when,” filmmaker Armando Ibanez told the Pride L.A. In the past few years there has been an exponential rise in the visibility for the LGBTQ+ community. Laverne Cox was named "Most Beautiful Women" by People Magazine in 2015. The Supreme Court struck down any state ban on samesex marriages. We’ve even seen a record high percentage of regular and recurring LGBTQ+ characters on scripted primetime programming. Yet, Ibanez asserts that the same cannot be said for the “undocuqueer” community whose rarely seen under the media spotlight. To broaden the queer narrative, Ibanez has combined his life experiences and his passion for filmmaking and advocacy to give a platform for those who identify as “undocuqueer,” or someone who is both undocumented and a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Since September 2015, Ibanez has produced and star in the web series “Undocumented Tales,” which chronicles the life of Fernando, an undocumented-queer restaurant server residing in Los Angeles. The series is cur-

rently in pre-production for season three. Despite relying on a cast of volunteers and a modest budget supplied through crowdfunding, the series has been met with enormous community support and many invitations to speak at college campuses such as California State University, Los Angeles, UCLA and the University of Washington. To mark the anticipated creation of season three, and to better understand the plight of the undocumented-queer community, the Price L.A. spoke with Ibanez to discuss his work and success. What inspired you to make this web series? My own life experiences. I mean everyone’s experience is different, but I wanted to be able to share my experiences, and hopefully others can relate. Can you speak more on those experiences being undocumented and queer? Well again, everyone’s experience is different, but for me I remember the journey in college being really hard. I didn’t qualify for AB 540, and I didn’t have any high school requirements.Thankfully, they made an exception using my past history from adult school, but it was still really hard because of my age. I was thirty finishing my GED, and I was so excited to share that with people. I remember at work there was this white server and he said, “Really, you’re f-cking thirty.” The intersectionality of being queer just adds a whole other layer. When you add it all up, you have all

FILM,

from page 20 these negative things affecting you. Be a good immigrant, speak English and play by the all the rules. We have the dreamers and the parents. I don’t match either. We need to change those narratives and that’s what my series is meant to do. Was there any pivotal moment where you thought, “I need to create this.” Around September 2015, I saw the Emmys with Viola Davis. She gave her speech and she said, “You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.” That night I sat down and wrote the first script for “Undocumented Tales.” It was about eight pages and I sent it to friends. I think I couldn’t sleep because I was so excited. I kept thinking, “I’m making this, I’m making this.” There was so much excitement because this was a story that didn’t exist. It was a big deal. Why have you chosen to pursue film and use it for this cause? When I came to this country I was told by my parents and friends that I was only going to work and learn English. Maybe then I’d be able to get a better job. I believed it for years. Later when I got accepted into college, I had a meeting with an advisor. I remember being told, “Here are the list of classes and if you’re interested, you can’t start with the arts, painting or film.” And I thought, “I can take film? I can be a filmmaker some day?” For me to be an artist, I thought you had to be white and rich. I was so excited to share this with friends and family, but it wasn’t welcomed, especially by my parents. Instead it was the undocumented community cheering for me.They helped me discover my passion and purpose; that’s why I do what I do. What has been the most unexpected experience or insight you’ve gained from this process of becoming a filmmaker and creating “Undocumented Tales?” What I didn’t expect is that this would be like therapy. It’s healing! After premiering the episodes

I would get messages like,“Oh my god I never saw this. He’s like me!” I don’t want to lose that and that’s why I’m scared of giving this away to a big time producer and losing control of this narrative. With this series, I feel like it’s saying, “Hollywood you’ve damaged our stories for many years, and you need to take a seat and let us have control of our story.” Despite all the educational, relationship and financial barriers, how have you managed to make being a filmmaker a reality? It was really hard. I’m still a server. I’m sacrificing everything: hiking time with friends, brunch, writing – so much! I do this work all during my free time. This project requires passion, discipline and commitment. Sometimes, you need to sacrifice to pursue what you love. What would you say is unique about the undocuqueer community? Those who identify as undocuqueer are not fully accepted by either sides of their identity. I feel that the undocumented community excludes the LGBTQ community. Similarly, we have tons of people fighting for the LGBTQ community, but not including those who are undocumented. I saw an example of this on social media. Every time I post something about undocumented people I get so many likes compared to queer posts. It’s sad, but sometimes the Latino community is not okay with the queer people. We’re so brainwashed with one set standard – other communities do not exist. That’s something I’m trying to change. Are there any words of wisdom, advice or motivation you’d like to share? You don’t always need to speak out. The fact that you wake up every day means you’re already fighting the system. This country doesn’t want to see us thriving and smiling. Being undocumented and queer is something I think about and struggle with every day. I know you’re going through a lot, but there others out there like you.We are here, and we stand with you.
