SEEKING JUSTICE
` ⚫ BY JORGE PANIAGUA
Cases Linked to Deaths in Ed Buck's Apartment Still Hot The deaths of Timothy Dean and Gemmel Moore incite calls for justice within community.
When one of Timothy Dean’s closest friends, Jeffrey Drew, heard the news in early January that a second gay black man was found dead in the apartment of prominent Democratic donor Ed Buck as a result of a drug overdose, he immediately forwarded the news article to Dean’s phone. “I had woken up Monday morning and I saw an article and I was like oh my God, it’s happened again,” Drew said. “So I forwarded [the story] to Timothy and I never heard back from him. I thought, ‘oh maybe he’s up hiking, by himself, then went to work.’ But then when I didn’t hear from him, and the news kept saying another man died at Ed Buck’s house, I didn’t put it together until halfway through the day — that Monday. [I thought], oh my God, what if Timothy went over there?’” The acting commander of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s West Hollywood substation said during the City of West Hollywood’s Council meeting Monday night that the LASD Robbery-Homicide detectives were still actively seeking statements and witnesses in the separate death investigations of Gemmel Moore, 26, and Dean, 55. LASD Lt. William Moulder said that Dean’s cause of death has not yet been released to the public, and that LASD officials have put a security hold on Dean’s autopsy, pending toxicology results. Dean was found dead in Buck’s West Hollywood apartment sometime between midnight and 2 a.m. on Jan. 7. This is the second gay black man found dead in Buck’s apartment within a timespan of 17 months. The case involving Moore happened in July 2017. Buck was recently hit with a wrongful death lawsuit from Moore’s mother, LaTisha Nixon, according to The New York Times. Drew was aware that Dean and Buck had known each other for years. Which is why, following Moore’s death, Drew would regularly forward articles involving the case to Dean.

A wrongful death civil rights lawsuit against Buck, Lacey and Assistant Head Deputy District Attorney Craig Hum was filed last week on behalf of Moore’s estate and his mother LaTisha Nixon in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
“All I knew [about Ed Buck] was what Timothy told me – which was that [Buck] was into underwear, and getting people really high,” Drew said. “In Buck’s apartment, there’s usually a mattress in the living room that the boys on the street – all of them knew – that if they needed a place to crash or to go get high, they could go to Ed’s.” Although the case involving Buck has received ample media coverage, Drew said that he is convinced that media outlets have not accurately represented who his close friend, Dean, was as an actual person. “I believe, and this is my opinion, that because it is two African-American boys, Timothy had done porn back in the day, and Gemmel was an escort, I think they [media outlets] vilified the two guys in the press,” Drew said. “It wasn’t about this man [Buck] — [the press wasn’t focusing on the fact that] oh, there’s something going on here, people are dying in someone’s apartment. It was about the salaciousness of Timothy

and Gemmel's lives.” However, Buck’s attorney, Seymour Amster, argues that his client’s critics have unfairly used race to blame Buck for the deaths of Dean and Moore. “Some people still want us to have a race war,” Amster said in a Los Angeles Times article. "Some people want to look at things as black, white or brown. It’s not. If we want to move forward and get away from identifying individuals by race, we must take race out of the conversation.” In a statement written by Dean’s family, posted on the Justice4Gemmel website on Feb. 27, they wrote: “Our brother’s life was cut short by a predatory man that preys on only Black gay
men. But make no mistake Ed Buck--none of this will be swept under the rug by no means. Justice will be served for Timothy Dean aka Timroy Williams.” Impulse Los Angeles, an organization which promotes a healthy sexual lifestyle, recently organized a rally in response to the deaths of Dean and Moore. The protest, which took place on Feb. 23 outside of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department West Hollywood Station, aimed to highlight the gravity, as well as demand justice, regarding the case. The small-scale protest was comprised of nearly 20 activists wearing orange jumpsuits and

from page 4 holding up signs meant to relay a clear message to law enforcement officials: continue investigating the deaths of Dean and Moore. “It was our way of saying this guys needs to go to jail,” Director of College Outreach for Impulse Los Angeles, Jordan Jones, said. “This guy needs to be tried by a jury. We can’t just drop the investigation. So, we’re kind of demanding action.” However, the activists’ clamor for further investigation fell on deaf ears. “We were pretty ignored,” Jones said. “A few sheriffs cars showed up just to kind of monitor us to make sure nothing got out of hand but no one approached us, no one spoke to us, no representative from the sheriff – just a lot of media showed up.” Impulse Los Angeles is planning a second demonstration – one on a much larger scale – if the case involving Ed Buck goes cold, according to Jones. It would involve two separate groups of activists simultaneously protesting on the same day – one group protesting outside of the Sheriff’s Department West Hollywood Station while another protests outside of Ed Buck’s home. “I think he needs to be investigated and put away,” Drew said. “He’s contributed to the
deaths of these men.We all have a responsibility, if we want to go and do crystal meth or any other drug, or drink, but it’s another to invite that very extreme sex experience. Timothy would tell me that Ed Buck likes to watch people get really high while wearing jocks, or long-johns, or underwear – it’s this kink scene.” DA Jackie Lacey said that there simply isn't enough evidence at this point to arrest Buck, according to Fox News. Specifically, detectives are trying to figure out who injected who with drugs. "Because obviously if the victim has injected themselves with drugs then Buck would not be guilty of anything," Lacey said in a Fox News interview. "We don’t care about drug use or anything like that, we’re willing to grant them immunity but we really need to hear from witnesses." A wrongful death civil rights lawsuit against Buck, Lacey and Assistant Head Deputy District Attorney Craig Hum was filed last week on behalf of Moore’s estate and his mother LaTisha Nixon in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Amster said in the the Los Angeles Times that he and Buck “categorically deny each and every allegation and look forward to litigating this matter in court.” Dean was at a crossroad in his life before dying – he was on a spiritual journey of new understanding and purpose, Drew said. He had plans to change careers. According to his friend,
he had multiple ambitions, which included plans to someday commit to a long-term relationship – he wanted to fall in love. Dean had plans to change careers, adopt a dog and, eventually, find his calling in life, Drew said. “He was this saucey, funny man,” Drew said. “Then, on the flip side, he was hypersensitive, curious – the wonderment of what kind of life do I want, what’s the next phase of my life, what’s the next chapter. He was at that point. He loved working at Saks [Fifth Avenue], he
loved the people he met.” Drew, along with Dean’s family members, friends and a plethora of activists, all desire that Dean’s unexpected death in Buck’s apartment be followed by their own respective takes on justice. “Yes, he [Buck] got involved with the Democrats but he wasn’t a big, big player,” Drew said. “He lives in his apartment – people talk about him as a multi-millionaire. It’s like, that’s not who he is. He’s just another queen living in West Hollywood.”

A CHANGE OF TITLE
DURAN STEPS DOWN AS MAYOR OF WEHO
Hours before a West Hollywood City Council meeting to discuss options regarding Mayor John Duran involvement in the City, Duran announced his resignation as mayor via Facebook. He said that he will still maintain his council seat until the end of his term in November. "I am handing the mayor's gavel to my friend John D'Amico as the mayor pro tem to fill the remaining two months of my mayor's term," he wrote in a Facebook post. "I am not resigning from council and will complete this term which expires in November of 2020." Duran said that he is stepping down due to health reasons. "Blood clots are dangerous and something I have had to contend with for over 20 years," Duran wrote. "I take them very seriously because they cause strokes, heart attacks and have taken a couple of close friends of mine recently. I continue to work with my doctors to try and get my blood and body in the right balance. I am supposed to slow down to half-speed and rest for the next 30 days. I was in the hospital for one week and that did help me slow down since I couldn't get very far with an IV in my arm.” At the meeting on Monday evening, the council listened to a report by City Attorney Michael Jenkins on how it could deal with Duran. Jenkins said the council could have stripped Duran of his title as mayor, restrict city-funded travel, can remove him from council subcommittees, deny him expense reimbursements for city-related business and censure him. Duran has allegedly been accused of behavior like putting his hand into the underwear of chorus members and making inappropriate sexual comments to them. In interviews with L.A. Times, three current or former chorus members accused Duran of inappropriate touching and comments. They said in the L.A. Times article that these allegations were reported to the chorus membership committee, which handles internal complaints, but chorus leadership did not follow up. Last week, the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office was asked to investigate an alleged violation of the Brown Act by West Hollywood City Council members John D’Amico, Lindsey Horvath and Lauren Meister, after all three councilmembers posted on Facebook, asking Duran to step down. Duran suggested in an interview with the L.A. Times that his fellow Council members were violating the law if they had coordinated their call for him to step down as mayor and for the district attorney to investigate them. “If the three of them are talking about

this, and it sounds like they are, that’s a violation of the Brown Act, and the district attorney should investigate,” Duran said in the L.A. Times. “You can’t have meetings outside of public view.… Do I think that they all got the idea to put up their statements, all three, at the exact same time without talking to each other? No.” Duran said that the request for an investigation by the District Attorney did not come from him, according to Wehoville.com. Duran announced last month that he was stepping down as chair of Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles. He said that he is leaving the board because of a “toxic” environment at GMCLA that he attributes to the allegations about him, as reported by Wehoville.com.
“An accusation is not proof that something occurred,” Duran said via email. “There must be due process of law. Every accusation must be taken seriously. But there should be forbearance from a rush to judgment until the matter is investigated. Otherwise, any of us are vulnerable to the conclusion of guilt on mere accusation.” The L.A. Times reported that chorus member Brian Phillip Nichoalds said that Duran slipped his hand inside Nichoalds’ waistband and made sexually inappropriate comments. Former chorus member Joey Firoben said he reported two incidents — one alleging that Duran made inappropriate comments and another alleging that a different chorus member groped him multiple times
during a dress rehearsal, according to the L.A. Times. Former chorus member Jason Tong said he left the chorus after Duran slipped his hand inside the waistband of his underwear in a changing room before a show. GMCLA announced Monday, March 4 that Steve Holzer, a long time board member and member of the Chorus, would take Duran’s place as board chair. GMCLA also announced that Lou Spisto, a member of the board from 2015 to 2018, a Tony-nominated producer and a prominent nonprofit arts administrator, is the new interim executive director. Spisto will replace Jonathan Weedman, who recent-

ACHIEVING JUSTICE
U.S. Citizenship Granted to Twin Son of Local Gay Couple
A federal judge in California ruled last week that a son of a gay married couple in Brentwood has been an American citizen since birth, despite only his twin brother receiving citizenship at birth in 2016. Each boy was conceived with donor eggs and sperm samples from the two different fathers — one an American, the other an Israeli citizen — but born by the same surrogate mother minutes apart. The government had only granted citizenship to Aiden Dvash-Banks, who DNA tests showed was the biological son of Andrew, a U.S. citizen. Ethan was conceived from the sperm of Elad, an Israeli citizen. The State Department was wrong to deny citizenship to Ethan because U.S. law does not require a child to show a biological relationship with their parents if their parents were married at the time of their birth, District Judge John F. Walter found. “This is justice!” Andrew and Elad said in a statement provided by Immigration Equality. “We are hopeful that no other family will ever have to go through this again. It’s like a giant rock has been removed from our hearts.” Last year, human rights group Immigration Equality filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Government on behalf of toddler Ethan. Before Ethan
could speak, crawl, or register what the words “family” and “country” meant, the case of his American citizenship was being contested by a government that granted it without a thought to his twin brother Aiden, but not to Ethan himself. The lawsuit, brought about by Ethan’s parents, was a practical measure and a statement. “This family was shocked and appalled and angry when they were told their family wasn’t legal,” Aaron Morris, executive director of Immigration Equality, said.“They wanted their twin boys to be treated exactly the same.” The lawsuit was filed in order to reunite a family, give two twin brothers equal rights and create a more inclusive idea of what family means in America in 2018. Elad and Andrew’s story spans across years, countries and continents. The two met in Israel, forming a relationship that would lead to their marriage in 2010. The couple wanted to settle in the United States, but the Defense of Marriage Act stood in their way. Instead of compromising, they moved to Canada to begin a life together. In 2016, their twin sons were born through surrogacy. Elad served as Ethan’s biological father, Andrew was Aiden’s. But the family wanted to move back to Andrew’s hometown of Los Angeles to be closer to his family. Seeking American citizenship for the children, Elad and Aiden visited the American Consulate in Toronto, where they were asked for DNA tests to prove their parentage. As a result, only one twin was allowed citizenship. Ethan, by virtue of being Elad’s biological son, was not. Elad’s Israeli citizenship meant that his son could only live in the U.S. on a tourist visa at the age of 16 months. “Being a father is everything for me,” says Elad, who despaired of ever being able to have children as a young gay man growing up in a society with limited media representation of queer families. “How am I going to explain this to him when he grows up? ‘You’re different from your brother?’”

BIG TOBACCO TARGETS LGBTQ+
COLUMN: My Story Kicking Tobacco’s Butt
The very first time I picked up a cigarette, I was in 7th grade. It wasn’t due to peer pressure, and I wasn’t aware that the tobacco industry aggressively targets the LGBTQ+ community. I was struggling with severe depression, suicidal ideation and coming to terms with my sexual orientation. At the time, I didn’t even know what transgender was, but I was presenting as female and wanted to date other females. Growing up in the ‘90s in a Latinx, religious, low-income neighborhood, it was basically a death sentence to openly state you were gay. Plus, I was emotionally and physically abused. Knowing that I had to hide who I was led me to engage in self-harming behaviors. One day I ditched school with my friends and went to the local liquor store to buy snacks. That’s when I discovered I was able to purchase single cigarettes. I wasn’t carded. I wasn’t asked why I wasn’t in school. I just gave the cashier a quarter and I was able to obtain a cigarette. From there, I experimented with different cigarette brands. I enjoyed menthols and 100’s.That’s not a coincidence -- menthol masks the harsh taste of tobacco, making the smoke feel smoother and easier to inhale. That taste hides the truth -- menthol cigarettes are worse for you
and harder to quit. My experience with menthol cigarettes isn’t unique either – thanks in part to intense marketing by the tobacco industry, nearly half of all lesbian, gay and bisexual adult cigarette smokers in California smoke menthol cigarettes, while only 28 percent of straight smokers smoke menthol cigarettes. By the time I was in high school, I was smoking a pack a day to ease my anxiety and depression. In college it was difficult for me to meet new people and make friends. The most common way I did this was by hanging out in the college smoker’s area and either bummed cigarettes off people, or allowed people to bum cigarettes off me. It was here that I learned that I wasn’t the only one with a strong sense of anxiety, depression and trauma. I was able to connect with others who smoked for the same reason.Tobacco companies exploit these feelings of isolation the LGBTQ community can experience, and promote smoking as a way to bond and relieve stress. The tobacco industry has also feigned allegiance to our community by sponsoring community and Pride events. But promoting deadly products isn’t being an ally. Over the years, my habit grew to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. I noticed my cigarette
intake continued to get worse as I started to understand what being transgender meant, and knowing that my partner was not okay with me transitioning. My anxiety, depression and suicidal tendencies were getting worse. The worse I felt about myself; feeling the rejection by society, by my partner, my parent’s disowning me, I couldn’t breathe unless there was a cigarette in my hand. It was in 2011 when I met my current partner that I was finally able to kick the habit. It wasn’t an easy road, but I spent a lot of time trying to find mental health services to address my anxiety, depression, suicidal ideology and gender expression/sexual orientation. There were so many providers who were anti-LGBTQ and caused my smoking rate to rise. When I was in a psychiatric hold, I was consistently misgendered, not allowed to practice my dietary restrictions and was abused because of who I was. This made it harder to quit. It was only when I was finally able to find an LGBTQ affirming therapist who specialized in childhood trauma that I was finally able to wean off of smoking and finally quit. Unless resources and providers who are LGBTQ competent are made available to assist in the healing of my community, we will continue to see smoking rates rise and not decline. We
need to look out for one another and protect each other. This includes from the predatory marketing by tobacco companies to the LGBTQ community. There is something we can do today – we can tell our elected representatives that will no longer accept the tobacco industry’s insidious targeting of our community. If you’d like to learn more about how our community has been pursued by menthol cigarette marketing, please visit www.tobaccofreeca.com. HOPE ON THE HORIZON
SECOND PERSON WITH HIV CURED
5 NIGHTS FROM

What was once essentially a death sentance, now has hope for a cure .
A second person has been confirmed HIV-free earlier this week after having a bone marrow transplant for cancer treatment. The first person thought to be cured of HIV was an American man named Timothy Brown, originally coined "the Berlin patient.” He received a bone-marrow transplant in 2007 to help treat his aggressive leukemia. The second person, “the London patient,” was confirmed in a study published on Monday, March 4, after being previously treated for Hodgkin's lymphoma, according to the Business Journal. Both patients’ donors had a rare but natural mutation in a gene called CCR5 that is resistant to HIV. Researchers are tracking the few other people who have HIV and have then had a bone marrow transplant from someone with the CCR5 mutation in a collaboration called IciStem. Researchers are still cautious about the results of the bone marrow transplant. "Continuing our research, we need to understand if we could knock out this [CCR5] receptor in people with HIV, which may be possible with gene therapy," Ravindra Gupta, the study's lead author, said in a release. Even though Brown is thought to be cured of that strain, he still has to take medications that prevent another strain that uses the CXCR4 protein from repli-

cating in his body. "At 18 months post-treatment interruption it is premature to conclude that this patient has been cured," the authors of the study wrote in the journal Nature on Tuesday. Bone marrow transplants might not be a realistic treatment option for most people with HIV, who don't necessarily have cancer. Over 38,000 Americans were diagnosed with HIV in 2018. 6,160 deaths in the United States in 2016 were directly attributed to HIV, according to the Business Journal. Public health experts have a plan to end HIV in the U.S. by 2030, but it focuses on managing patients’ virus with drugs and prevent it from spreading to more people. Gay and bisexual men accounted for 66 percent (25,748) of all HIV diagnoses and 82 percent of HIV diagnoses among males in the U.S., according to the Center for Disease Control. DEAR AIDAN
DEAR AIDAN: Feeling Unapreciated in Relationship Photo: Getty Images.
Dear Aidan,
In this week’s Dear Aidan column, Aidan Park says, don’t do kind things for your partner with the expectation that it be reciprocated!
I am in a relationship where I feel as though I am doing most of the work. I am emotionally supportive, understanding, and try to show my partner a lot of love! However, I am not feeling the same level of effort coming from her! I feel as though she is taking me for granted and is ungrateful for all the effort I put in. Shouldn't relationships be a 50/50 and not just me doing all the work... It's like I am paying a price to be in this relationship and she is not.
After all, they are your partner - not your purse dog to train and control at your own whim. If your partner gripes at the dwindling affection... well then maybe they will see that they have been taking you for granted, but at least you will be keeping your side of street clean. Remember there is really no "should" for your partner.Your partner will react they way they react and it is up to you to determine whether you want to play... your partner will not (and should not be expected to) change for you. The only person’s actions you can change is your own! OPEN COMMUNICATION and GIVING WITHOUT EXPECTATION OF RECIPROCATION is the key here.
Dear Life is Unfair, Okay, first question: Are you communicating your needs clearly to your partner? Often in situations such as this, the partner with the complaint has not communicated how they feel to their partner and upon further investigation says one of two things: 1 – "No I haven't told her DIRECTLY what I need and how I feel, but she should know how I feel, since we are adults. So I am not speaking to her until she realizes what she's done wrong" or 2 – "Since she is not being appreciative, I have doubled down on my efforts to show her how much I care by getting us a trip to Aruba, getting her a gown by Versace and bought Kate Beckinsale's half used lipstick from ebay... and STILL

no thank you! How Can she be so ungrateful?!” People will often times do ANYTHING to avoid confrontation. Oftentimes, they will avoid the topic at all costs and attempt to communicate indirectly as seen in examples above. This will just lead to more aggravation as you attempt to control the response of your partner (yes, this is what you are doing) by behaving in a certain way and/or withholding affection, which is a recipe for disaster! STOP indirectly manipulating your partner to try and control them into being the person you want and actually tell them how you feel instead. If you have already communicated openly, then you must realized that this person is NOT going to change! PERIOD. It's like yelling at a Monet painting and asking it to be a Van Gogh. The lesson here is you cannot expect to change people, you must love them as who they are because having your happiness dependent on their behavior will only lead to dissatisfaction. If you look at the way the your question is phrased... this is exactly what is happening. While I am sure that your good deeds directed at your partner are mostly well intentioned, there is a definitely pattern of... "I did something for them so they should do something back" kind of expectation. Which (spoken out loud or not) adds a sort of "you owe me" type of tone, which I am sure your partner feels. My suggestion would be this: Do NOT do anything for your partner UNLESS you are going to be totally okay without any kind of token of appreciation or thank you directed back at you. ONLY do things for your partner that will give

you satisfaction without praise from your partner. In theory, all deeds should be done from the kindness of your heart, not for the satisfaction of acknolwdgement or reciprocation from others, expecially when it comes to romantic partners.

WEHO READS: Jacob Tobia’s “Sissy” WeHo Reads welcomes gender nonconforming writer, producer, and performer Jacob Tobia in conversation with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, star of ABC Television’s Modern Family about Tobia’s new book, “Sissy: A Coming-of-Gender Story.” The event is presented by the City of West Hollywood’s Arts Division and Book Soup and co-sponsored the ONE Archives Foundation. From the moment a doctor in Raleigh, North Carolina, put

“male” on Jacob Tobia’s birth certificate, everything went wrong. Alongside “male” came many other, far less neutral words: words that carried expectations about who Jacob was and who Jacob should be, words like “masculine” and “aggressive” and “cargo shorts” and “SPORTS!” Naturally sensitive, playful, creative, and glitter-obsessed, as a child Jacob was given the label “sissy.” In the two decades that followed, “sissy” joined forces with “gay,” “trans,” “nonbinary,” and “tooqueer-to-function” and eventually became a source of pride and, today, a rallying cry for a much-needed gender revolution. Tobia, who uses the pronouns they, them, theirs, revisits their childhood and calls out the stereotypes that each of us have faced, while inviting us to rethink what we know about gender. They offer a bold blueprint for a healed world — free from gender-based trauma and bursting with trans-inclusive feminism. From Tobia’s Methodist childhood and the hallowed halls of Duke University to the portrait-laden parlors of The White House, Sissy takes readers on a gender od-
yssey they won’t soon forget. Writing with the fierce honesty, wildly irreverent humor, and the wrenching vulnerability that have made them a media sensation, Jacob shatters the long-held notion that people are easily sortable into “men” and “women.” Sissy guarantees that you’ll never think about gender — both other people’s and your own — the same way again. obia has become established as a breakout voice for the nonbinary, genderqueer, and trans communities. Named one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 and one of the OUT 100, Tobia was a producer for Amazon’s Emmy Award-winning show Transparent and created, co-produced, and hosted Queer 2.0, a first-of-its-kind LGBTQ series on NBC News. With bylines everywhere from Teen Vogue to The New York Times, Tobia has blazed a trail for gender nonconformity and contributed to the chorus of queer voices challenging normative notions of gender and sexuality, advocating for inclusivity and empathy, and helping others find and embrace their own truths.
The event will take place on Wednesday, March 13 at 7 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at the West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. The evening will include a book signing, with books for sale by Book Soup. The Most Anticipated Films Out of the HUMP! Festival Queer icon Dan Savage’s short-form porn fest celebrates its 14th year.
Best For: The visually inclined. 3. Porn Yesterday Plot: A meta-romp dealing with adults trying to hide their porn collections. Festival Winner: Jury Award Best For: Those who love a well-plotted porno.
Everyone has their own special relationship to porn. Some adore it. Some love it, but hate themselves for watching it. Others think it’s awful. Dan Savage, who most of us know as the most visible sex and love expert speaking on queer themes, can’t get enough. Or at least, he wants us to know that whatever your thing is, you should rejoice in the fact that statistically speaking, you’re probably not alone in your freakiness. This year, as the HUMP! Film Festival-- a celebration of short, less-than-five-minute films with porn as a common theme. The makers of the films are often amateurs, and kink of all kinds is welcome as the subject. This year, the first that HUMP! makes its way to Palm Springs as well as Los Angeles, we’re looking forward to a few extra-promising selections that sound just weird enough to work. At least, for five minutes at a time.
4. Around the World in 80 Lays Plot: What do you get for the couple that’s had sex in every continent? More sex, of course! Festival Winner: Best in Show Best For: People who get turned on by travel.
2. Optic Perve Plot: This Peeping Tom-themed thriller is like a sexy Magic Eye. We imagine.

Nationally touring queer spoken word showcase Sister Spit will be making its stop at the LGBTQ Center of Long Beach on Saturday, March 16 at the acclaimed Icehouse Arts Complex. Having shifted the tour’s focus towards highlighting LGBTQ artists of color in 2018, Sister Spit will again feature a diverse lineup of seven artists. “Sister Spit’s annual stop is hands down one of the most creative, innovative, and acclaimed LGBTQ arts events in Long Beach,” says The Center’s executive director Porter Gilberg. “We are honored to host such a dynamic and talented group of artists again for the eighth year.” Founded in the 1990s, Sister Spit brings powerful, provocative, and vital queer writers to cities across the country to perform before live audiences. The tour hosts a revolving roster of established and emerging LGBTQ authors, poets, and mixed media artists. Produced by the Bay Area non-profit organization RADAR Productions, Sister Spit features artists offering works that speak to contemporary issues of race, size, class, gender, and sexuality. This year’s lineup will feature Columbian writer and historian Juliana Delgado Laopera (winner of the 2018 Lambda Literary Award for Aunt Lute), queer Mexican writer and Lambda Literary Poetry and Playwriting Fellow Baruch Por-

A review of its federal tax returns shows that revenue, which had been growing steadily over the past five years, fell 21 percent to $1.36 million in 2017. It was in January of that year that GMCLA hired Weedman, a former senior vice president of the Wells Fargo Foundation, for the executive director’s job. GMCLA saw a 7.5 percent reduction in expenses in 2017. But with the decline in revenue, that still left the organization with a loss of $227,000.

STAR GAZING ARIES (March 21-April 19) Aries will spend today enjoying peace and tranquility. In your house today there will be no guests, and by evening you are even a little bored. However, as you will understand a little later, it is lonely home leisure that will help you to restore emotional balance. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Today will not bring Taurus much change. Around you everything will be too stable, which will start to annoy you greatly. Wishing to at least diversify this dull day somehow, you will go on a visit. Here you will be surrounded by the boring faces of friends. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) Gemini today will be able to solve some complicated issue related to their love sphere. If there is a pesky person in your life, who too actively hints at you about making up, then today you can finally rid yourself of this pest. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Cancers on this day will not be able to be derailed even by sarcastic criticism from someone close to you. You will maintain your Spartan equanimity, demonstrating to everyone that your nerves are really made of steel. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Leos will have to look for an answer to a question that goes back to the distant past. You will remember some confusing incident that occurred at the very beginning of your marriage. Then for many hours you will pester your partner about what was true. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Virgo is recommended to spend today surrounded by close friends, but only they are able to listen to you, encourage you, and support you with good advice. Do not keep problems to yourself, or you will not achieve anything good. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) Librans are in for an exciting trip. You will spend many hours on the road, but in the end you will understand that this trek was not in vain. You will meet many interesting people, enjoy the landscapes of an unfamiliar region, and also have time to miss your other half. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) Scorpios will be given an answer to a very important question. It is possible that this concerns a mortgage or other kind of loan. The bank will confirm your request, which means that very soon you will have the very amount that you need to fulfill your main desires. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Sagittarius on this day enjoys a quiet leisure in the surroundings of their household. If you refuse to leave your home today, you will win more than losing. As you will be told a little later, the cultural event that you wanted to attend but could not was surprisingly boring. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Capricorns should be carefully looking around, so as not to miss a fateful meeting. Today you will meet a person who radically transforms your life, becoming for you either a life-long partner, a close friend, or your spiritual mentor. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Aquarius, without exception, will fascinate all members of the opposite sex. Remember that relationships are more about quality, and not the quantity of those you impress. Do not forget about this when trying to start a new romance. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Pisces is destined to get a very tempting offer. A person who will invite you to join his business projects deserves both respect and trust, which means that you should not worry that you will want for a great deal of cooperation from him.
