Venice Signs Spark Colorful Debate

Venice Pride, Venice Chamber of Commerce feud over Pride Month signs.

Marking the 50th-anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, attendees of the annual Venice Pride Sign Lighting & Block Party at Windward Circle danced in the street last Saturday under two rainbows that are at the center of a debate between Venice Pride and the Venice Chamber of Commerce. For the past three years, the Venice Chamber of Commerce and Venice Pride, a non-profit that promotes and protects LGBTQ interests in Venice Beach, have collaborated to put on the sign lighting and block party to kick off Pride Month with the Venice sign changing to rainbow colors. On February 22, 2019, however, the Venice Chamber of Commerce canceled Venice Pride's chamber membership. In addition, the Venice Sign Trademark License Agreement granted to Venice Pride on April 1, 2017 was revoked, meaning Venice Pride is no longer able to sell apparel such as shirts with Venice Sign branding. In March, the chamber announced that they would be taking down the Venice Sign in June during Pride Month for unrelated maintenance. On May 21, Venice Pride Board President Grant Turck said that Venice Pride had commissioned and would install a rainbow Venice sign of their own over Windward Avenue for 24 hours for the Venice Pride Sign Lighting & Block Party. On May 30, however, the Venice Chamber of Commerce announced they would, in fact, light up the Venice Sign in rainbow hues for Pride Month despite previously saying the sign would be down for maintenance. Therefore, on Saturday, June 4, attendees of the Venice Pride Sign Lighting & Block Party were greeted by two signs: a double rainbow. In a statement provided to Yo! Venice, the Venice Chamber of Commerce said that Venice Pride's installation of a sign for 24 hours "demeans" the Venice Sign. "Manufacturing a replica of the trademark-protected Venice Sign is a direct affront to the Venice community as it has the potential to cause the Venice Sign to suffer the same fate as the one originally installed by Abbot Kinney back in 1905. To protect this beloved community asset, the Venice Chamber hopes that the Venice Pride organization will, in the coming years, redirect their efforts to create a unique and original

concept for their celebrations. The Chamber is concerned about any unauthorized use because of the potential it has to demean a community treasure that we hope will be enjoyed by generations to come," the Chamber said. "Part of the obligation of protecting the trademarks is that we are bound to address infringements. If we do not follow up on unauthorized usage, it places our trademarks in jeopardy. This can ultimately cause us to lose the ability to take care of the sign on behalf of Venice." In response to this, Venice Pride told Yo! Venice that the sign they installed for the sign lighting and block party was an "original" design. "Following notice in March that the “VENICE” sign would be taken down for the month of June due to unrelated maintenance, Venice Pride designed and commissioned an original sign based on the free ‘Gilbert’ font under a Creative Commons License. Inspired by the design language of the iconic Rainbow Flag created by Gilbert Baker, the mobile sign spanned Windward

included Stonewall survivor Everett C. Alexander, DJ Victor Rodriguez, Los Angeles Rams Cheerleaders Quinton and Sammy, non-binary Drag Queen Posse, Restauranteur Daniel Samakow and out LAPD Captains Shannon Paulson and Peter J. Casey.

Celebrate Unity, Diversity, Hope at Angel City Chorale By Keldine Hull

From their humble beginnings, Angel City Chorale (ACC) has evolved into one of the most well- known singing groups in Southern California, celebrating unity, diversity and hope through their music and dedication to the community. Artistic Director Sue Fink founded ACC in 1993. Fink explained, “I started teaching private voice and classes at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. One of them was a choir workshop. That choir, made up of 18 of my voice students, eventually morphed into the Angel City Chorale.” Fink’s hope was to create a community for singers in Los Angeles, filling in what she found lacking in the city. Fink continued. “We live in such a big city, and I wanted to create a sense of a small town and community for folks. I started with people who were not choral experts but rather singers who hadn't sung in harmony groups academically or in church. The music we chose was more audience-friendly, and since most had been performers but not from the more ‘dignified’ choral world, we sang with joy and spontaneity that echoed in our performances. We became a ‘gateway’ choir for a whole new audience who hadn't experienced choral music before.” Now in their 26th year, ACC has grown to over 180 singers, with a varied repertoire of songs, from classical and gospel to jazz, pop,

and world music. Last year, ACC competed on Season 13 of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent”, earning millions of new fans across the globe including creator and judge, Simon Cowell. Fink said, “Our cover of Toto's ‘Africa’ exploded on YouTube and other viral sites, garnering nearly 50 million views and counting. It caught the attention of America's Got Talent and helped propel us to the Semi-Finals last year. That additional exposure has been tremendous, with people from all over the world expressing interest and praise for our singing. It's been overwhelming how much our music has resonated with folks from all corners of the globe.” Equally known for their involvement within the community, ACC has donated food, per-

sonal items, and supplies to non- profit organizations that serve Los Angeles. ACC also collaborated with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Los Angeles County to form Angel City Youth Chorale. The program, which began with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Venice and Santa Monica, provides LA youth with a safe place to explore musical interests. Angel City Chorale members who are also music teachers meet weekly with 30 children to engage them in singing, music and the joy of belonging to a choral community.

Local fans can see ACC perform live at Santa Monica’s Barnum Hall on June 21 and June 22 at 8 p.m. ACC will be performing the songs that took them to the semifinals on “America’s Got Talent” as well as classic TV theme songs, contemporary pieces, gospel and world music. With a special appearance by Angel City Youth Chorale, the 2- night musical event will be one fans won’t want to miss. To learn more about ACC, visit: angelcitychorale.org

GAY L.A.

Meet Margaret Chung, L.A.’s “Gentleman Jack” For 20th-century women who worked in stereotypically “male” professions, greater public and sexual freedoms were allowed.

When Margaret “Mom” Chung entered the workforce in the early 20th century, she faced plenty of opposition. The daughter of Chinese immigrants converted by Presbyterian ministers, Margaret lived with her six siblings in Santa Barbara at the turn of the century, working their father’s farm to provide SoCal residents with traditional Chinese fare. Because of her missionary ties, Chung got the opportunity to study medicine. “In 1916,” wrote in an 2001 Los Angeles Times article, “she surmounted both tradition and bigotry to become the nation's first American-born female physician of Chinese ancestry, practicing in Los Angeles and later San Francisco.” Getting work, however, was something

else. Chung may have been far ahead of her time, but during a moment in history when patients were used to only seeing and trusting male, white doctors, finding her footing in the profession proved difficult. Still, she persevered even after being rejected for a missionary post in China. Chung found work in Chicago, and later started treating Mexican railway workers in Santa Fe. She eventually made her way up to San Francisco, where she became famous for living a scandalous unmarried life in the heart of Chinatown. At the time, San Francisco was experiencing a minor queer revolution, thanks to the Navy’s “blue discharge” policy of dropping off queer sailors who had outed themselves at the nearest port, which often happened to be San Francisco, either by chance or design. Margaret Chung, ensconced in the vibrant queer world of 1920s Chinatown with its female impersonators, exotic dancers, and gay clubs like The Rickshaw and The Forbidden City, was right at home. Even from her early days in med school, Chung had embraced butch style. “Entering the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1911,” wrote Dale DeBakcsy in a 2018 article. “Chung began adopting the dress

and mannerisms of the predominantly male colleagues around her, creating a persona she named “Mike,” sporting pulled back hair and a men’s sport jacket, and cultivating a taste for swearing, hunting, and bawdy humor.” Picking up masculine attitudes was one way of fitting into the workforce. In her graduation picture, Chung: “...put on a mannish shirt and tie and slicked back her hair, making it hard to tell that she was the only woman in the class.” Like “Gentleman Jack,” aka Anne Lister, and countless women before her, Chung adopted butch mannerisms and fit in, and to set herself apart. Chung’s access to L.A.’s inner circle led to purported relationships with some of Hollywood’s elite writers and performers, such as the queer poet Elsa Gidlow and the singer Sophie Tucker. Chung had already established herself as a surgeon to the stars in Hollywood by the time World War II broke out. That didn’t stop her from creating what would become the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), an all-female answer to the navy. Chung threw herself into the war effort, hosting Thanksgiving dinners of over 175 people and giving out thousands of pres-

ents to weary stragglers and servicemembers. Her friendships (and adoption of) young pilots and servicemen (whom she referred to as her “fair-haired bastards”) was legendary. America, unfortunately, didn’t give back to Dr. “Mom” Chung in the end. After she established the WAVES, she wasn’t allowed to join her own volunteer organization due to the government’s suspicions about her sexuality. In 1959, Chung died of Ovarian cancer in the Marin County home her many adopted sons purchased for her.

‘Deconstrucción’ of Gender at MOLAA

It started with an idea. A commemorative project to celebrate Argentinian Independence anniversary, artists Chiachio and Giannone didn’t expect to create the world largest rainbow flag. But they did. Featured in the Long Beach Pride parade in May, the rainbow flag is a fabric mosaic, constructed of over 3,000 patchwork squares contributed by the lgbtq+ community. The flag, along with “Deconstruccion: A Drag Show” on Saturday June 15, is a part of the current exhibit at the Museum of Latin America Art - “Chiachio & Giannone: Celebrating Diversity” on display until August 4. The Pride L.A. spoke with the artists and the museum about what it takes to curate such an exhibit. Check it out: ARTISTS INTERVIEW – Where did the idea for the flag come from? In 2018 we were invited to participate in an exhibition at the CCK (Kirchner Cultural Center) in Buenos Aires commemorating the 30th anniversary of democracy

in Argentina. For this reason we made a tribute to the LGTBIQ artists of Argentina by developing a series of paintings (textile mosaics) in addition to creating a series of pride flags in different textile techniques (patchwork, crazy quilt, etc.) reusing fabrics, our clothes and those from our friends. As LGTBIQ artists always in our works, the rainbow flag appears in different ways. How is it reflective of your style/ other works? The flag is made with fabrics reused and donated by the community. This idea ofreusing materials has interested us for quite some time because there is a clear intention to work with what the world is giving us and giving things a second chance. We are painters of academic formation and this great flag is conceived as a great painting. We selected each of the more than 3,000 squares of fabric and we dyed them, achieving a great variety of color ranges within the spectrum of the rainbow. The 6 colors of the rainbow are colors that are always present in some way in each of the pieces we make. Can you explain some of the symbolism behind the flag/creating it with the community? The important thing was to create a Pride Flag at MOLAA during the various workshops we have done both within the museum and in other spaces (LGBT Center of Long Beach, LGBT Center in West Hollywood, etc.) so that people leave positive messages about the diversity. In this way this great flag represents the voices of the whole community. The symbolic value of this work translates into this patchwork / painting 30 feet wide by 112 feet long. 3,360 square feet were needed to carry the voices of the more than 3,000 people who collaborated for this project. How was the Pride parade? The Long Beach Pride Parade was amazing and festive. A true celebration of diversity. Another important aspect was that we could see for the first time the flag displayed in its entirety because the room where we made it did not allow it. We also feel the support of more than 130 people to be able to carry it during the parade. As the flag made its way through the parade’s audience, we were able to recognize many people who were present during the creation process, they came to greet us, to thank us and accompanied us on the march. What have people’s responses to the flag been like? The people responded positively throughout the process of creating the flag. We started in mid-March at MOLAA, the day we opened the exhibition "Celebrating Diversity" curated by Gabriela Urtia-

ga and we finished it in mid-May. To create this flag, we have done several workshops with the community (in the LGTB Center of LB and LA; Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro, CA; Dog Day at MOLAA; California State University LB; etc.) where people responded positively, actively participated leaving messages, drawings about their motivations to live in diversity and also donating fabrics for their realization. The flag is made with reused fabrics and dyed in the 6 colors of the rainbow. During these months, the museum gallery became a large laboratory for the production, participation and integration of the members of the community with a single objective: to create the great flag. What are the future plans for the flag? The flag will be displayed at the Pride at the Port Festival in San Pedro, CA on June 15th. In this instance, the great flag will be displayed as a piece of public art that will involve a fixed structure. Afterwards, the flag will be on display in MOLAA until the end of our exhibition "Celebrating Diversity" on August 4. Next year, the museum has submitted this project to be presented at other venues. Soon the flag will travel to Argentina to be exhibited in public institutions. What does “Pride” mean to you? Pride means that we are all different but we have to have the same rights. Pride means that we are proud of the human beings that we are following our own desires that are not the "heteronormative" desires that society imposes.

How can people find out more information about you/your artwork? (Website, social media, etc) Website: www.chiachiogiannone.com Instagram: @chiachiogiannone Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ ChiachioGiannone/ MOLAA INTERVIEW – Can you tell me a little bit about the “Deconstrucction” drag show? Deconstrucción a drag show is an evening with a high energy drag show emceed by SoCal Queen Xotica Erotica featuring Rupual’s Drag Race Season 2 alum Jessica Wild and performances by LA Drag Stars Melissa Befierce and Paris Diamond. The evening will also include a set by Boyle Heights native DJ Sizzle, a lively marketplace with craft and food vendors, cash bar, photo booth, and various LGBTQI organizations such as Latino Equality Alliance & The Center. Plus a screening of Transvisibile: Bamby Salcedo’s Story by Dante Alencastre highlighting Bamby Salcedo, highly regarded, nationally and internationally recognized trans activist, advocate, community organizer and social justice advocate and professional. DB: “Killer Unicorn” follows a masked masc 4 masc seeking revenge on the queer community who put him in his place but went too far. JA: A queer campy slasher about the dangers

of toxic masculinity and white male fragility. Where did the inspiration come from? DB: Jose bought a unicorn mask and posted a picture on instagram that ended up getting a lot of likes and thought to himself "why not make this a movie?" JA: I have loved horror my entire life and felt like the queer community didn’t have the slasher icon we deserved. Who is the intended audience? DB & JA: As much love as we get from the queer community, its very cool to see how insanely positive the reactions are from straight and older audiences! Everyone is welcome at our party. On a scale of 1 to “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” how scary is it? DB & JA: “Misery” if Annie Wilkes had been played by Lady Bunny On a scale of 1 to “Valley of the Dollys,” how Campy is it? DB & JA: “Desperate Living” if Michael Myers took his knife to Mortville How is it similar/different to “Rocky Horror Picture Show” ? DB & JA: We can only aspire to inspire peo-

ple the way “Rocky Horror Picture Show” has done over the years. People should feel free to have as much fun watching “Killer Unicorn” as they do watching RHPS: Both films have some very in your face moments and a horny psychopath as their lead; but in its own right, “Killer Unicorn” is a horror film set in present day Brooklyn nightlife. What was your favorite part/scene to see come to life on screen? DB & JA: During an acid enema scene, where the unicorn is douching a character with a mysterious substance he asks:“What flavor enema is this? is this sriracha? I love sriracha!…Ow it burns!” What was the most challenging scene to write/direct? Why? DB: We had a large cast and shot mostly in the very cold New York winter. Our very first day we were shooting an interior party scene with most of the cast and a ton of extras and the space was freezing. If everyone weren't a trooper we wouldn't have gotten anywhere. JA: The most challenging scene to write was the ending, as we lost the location right as we were about to shoot and I had to re-write it in the spot.

Why should people go watch this movie? DB & JA: To have a stupid good time while supporting independent queer art. For more information, visit www.indicanpictures. com/new-releases/killer-unicorns

Dear Aidan! I've been in a relationship for about six months, and during this time my partner has not directly asked for threesomes but keeps hinting that she might want one. When we are intimate, she fantasizes about bringing a man into the scenario and us all having fun together. I kinda go along with it during the sex, but afterwards I tell her that is not what I am interested in doing and that I am not into men in that way at all, much less an idea of a three-way with anyone. While she agrees during the conversation, the fantasy comes up AGAIN when are get getting intimate. How can I get her to stop doing this?

Dear Threeway or No Way, You cannot – and really should not – try to change her as this is how every bad relationship begins. Let me explain. I will use your situation as an example but truly it applies to any situation of the sort. - Partner 1 wants threesomes and while she does not say directly and does not pursue them she is really into the idea. It is her fantasy. - Partner 2 does NOT want a threesome and starts expressing dissatisfaction about the fact that Partner 1 seems to want one - Partner 1 then tries to satisfy Partner 2 by IGNORING HEW OWN DESIRES and attempts to hammer away at herself to satisfy Partner 2. - Partner 2 senses a different kind of tension but appreciates efforts of Partner 1 and is somewhat satisfied with situation and they move forward in the relationship. - Partner 1 then holds onto her deep desired fantasy and starts feeling unsafe to express her true desires. Partner 2 senses something is off. They start having less sex. My hope for people (myself included) is to have a FANTASTIC relationship; not just a mediocre one. It is my belief that in order have a relationship that is AMAZING, one must be free to express and pursue what they want deep in their hearts without judgement. But first, the person who is having the fantasy must be honest with themselves and start accepting of themselves.AND be willing to tell the truth! This is actually the basis for pride month, isn’t it? For decades, centuries even, there have been homosexuals on this planet. Due to societal pressures which created an idea of what was RIGHT or WRONG, people have been suppressing their gay desires and FORCING THEMSELVES to try to marry the opposite sex in order to live "The good life.” They TRY to live the life of one man + one woman + 2.5 kids blah blah blah. Why

do those ultimately fail? (and I also see personal failure as having a mediocre life of quiet dissatisfaction BTW) BECAUSE people involved in said relationship are turning their back on their true instinctual desires and trying to force something to work that is actually not what their spirit or soul is calling for deep inside. FOLLOW? SO! What does this mean for you? It means bedroom is a place that you CANNOT HIDE. It is my strong opinion that the bedroom is a place for intimacy built on expressing your heart's deepest fantasies (as long as your are not hurting anyone else). One should be allowed to completely be themselves in the bedroom without being hammered away to meet a criteria that either partner has set up. So the question for you is... What do YOU WANT? Do you realize that there are women out there are who INSTINCTUALLY DRIVEN toward the same things that you want? Who WANT monogamy and get off on the idea of sharing themselves with only one person? You guys are early in the relationship so the answer here is to pose this question to yourself. "What do I Want for me in my life? Does this person line up with what I truly want from a foundational standpoint? If not, and say this person try to change... do I want someone who has willed themselves into being someone that they are not to satisfy me?" Life is what you make and the answer always is to figure out WHAT YOU WANT and go for THAT. bers from across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, erupted in cheers following Allen’s share. Furthermore, the event served as a platform to recognize LGBTQ+ women that have served their community in considerable ways. For instance, Executive Director of the Trans Wellness Center, Mariana Marroquin, and Training Director at the Net Zero Plus Electrical Training Institute, Diana Limon, both received the LA Pride Women Who Lead award from the Alexis Arquette Family Foundation. “There are only 3 percent women in the United States within the electrical industry,” Limon said during her speech. “Out of all the work that I do, that is the most important thing that I can do — to be visible, to help women to lead and to move up in their pathway. On behalf of all the trades-women and the LGBTQI+ community [working] in construction, I, humbly, accept this [award].” An array of performances and speeches were featured at the event’s official stage including words from actresses Rosanna Arquette and Joely Fisher and stand-up performances by comedians Robin Tran and Suzanne Westenhoefer. “It’s a “femme” event — let’s hear it for the lezzies,” Westenhoefer, an openly Lesbian comedian, joked during her stand-up performance. “This is just a crazy night to do stand-up.” “I didn’t want this to just be a women’s

evening? An amazing, educating, and energetic night filled with art and entertainment. What is the overall goal/purpose of the evening (entertain, educate, fundraise, etc.)? All three. All of MOLAA's fundraising events also serve as an educational opportunities and this specific event is put together to educate and challenge themes of gender and identity roles. We present this challenge through various elements in the event like the Drag portion but also the art workshop by the People’s Workshop where individuals will be making their own flag to represent their own narrative and what that means to them. What does “Pride” mean to MOLAA and/or how does MOLAA support the LGBTQ+ community? Pride meas inclusiveness, diversity and the entire community's well being. As a result of this exhibition, MOLAA has developed a strong partnership with other other organizations that support the LGBTQ+ community and are activley developing programming that will keep these collaborations alive. Any upcoming events/future exhibits readers should know about? The will be a busy summer for MOLAA. On July 27th, MOLAA will host the presentation Activisim & the Arts: A Life Journey by Dan Guerrero, accompanied by a panel

event,” Cacciatore said. “There are so many strong, wonderful men and people who identify [as] gender-fluid, people who identify [as] non-binary — we’re all part of the same community. I wanted us all together in one room as much as I could get us together.” “FEM(ME): Fueling The Female Force Within” was a creative collaboration involving an array of community partners such as Eden Entertainment Group, #IRememberNicole, LOL: Ladies of LA and Madcatch Entertainment. The event served as a kick-off party for LA Pride this upcoming weekend. “I think it’s important for people to understand that Pride initially started as a revolution,” Salcedo said. “As a revolt of the injustices that we were experiencing. Pride has evolved into being something different — which is great — we need to celebrate ourselves but, at the same time, we need to understand that there are so many things that still need to happen. Pride should be used, to not only bring awareness to the issues that we continue to have, but to continue to revolt.”

discussion afterwards moderated by Eduardo Lara, a Sociologist of Education at Cal State Long Beach and member of the Board of Director for the LGBTQ Center Long Beach. In his talk Activism & the Arts: A Life Journey, influential artist/educator/ activist Dan Guerrero travels through decades of Mexican-American/Chicano and LGBTQ history from a personal point of view. The intersection of the social and political movements in both communities is vividly illustrated through storytelling and historic photos in this powerful presentation. Through his own experiences, Guerrero speaks to the Chicano and contemporary LGBTQ movements and addresses the importance of solidarity across cultural currents. STAR GAZING By Samuel Prince

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Aries will spend today without major victories. At the finale of the work week, you will be occupied solely with something that has nothing to do with your career. In the evening you will rush to where a person who is especially dear to you is waiting. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Taurus today will give up resisting changes in their personal living space. This is at a time when your beloved partner is determined to modify the interior, using the services of professional designers. Before giving a definitive “no” to such projects, think again. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) Gemini today will lose in a conversation with their other half. Your partner will refuse to admit that they were fundamentally wrong when talking to one of your parents. If you do not want your parents to continue to be treated so disrespectfully, state this clearly. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Cancers should not hide your heart behind hundreds of locks. Determine who or what makes you so much afraid of a new love affair. The person who suggested that you start a new romance is worthy of respect, admiration, and the right to be with you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Leos today will be guided by vanity and selfishness. Because of them, you venture to make a deal with your own conscience. In order to become famous, you will set up one of your friends or relatives. Success will come to you, but the price you paid for it will be prohibitive. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Virgo will not find it easy to understand the true intentions of his second half. They will hint that they want to spend the next weekend alone with you. However, as soon as you offer a specific itinerary for this romantic trip, they will change their mind. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) Libra will not experience joy or anxiety today. Remembering that on Saturday you will have to work again, you will refuse to attend a traditional Friday party at the house of your best friend. This evening you will be alone with some video project. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) Scorpios today will determine for themselves a new life plan for the near future. The number one item of this plan will be a very expensive purchase, which you will save for today. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Today it will be typical for Sagittarians to give an elaborate answer to the most simple questions. Thus, you will not pursue any goals. Expressing your thoughts in vague phrases, you will be in a distracted mood when you wake up. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Capricorns will spend today separated from the bustle. You will perceive what is happening around you, like a movie or some strange TV show, run by creative directors. You will be the winner by the end of this day. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Aquarius will spend this day doing business with family. You want to devote all your free time to your household, remembering that in the last few days you did not give them hugs, love and care. You even prepare a pleasant surprise for your relatives. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Pisces today will acquire a very useful object, capable of making household affairs less tedious. However, not all your relatives will like this thing. Representatives of the older generation will begin to grumble unhappily.
