TURNING UP BEFORE BEING TURNED AWAY

The 2018 Pride festival was oversold by thousands of tickets this year in epic turnout.

Thousands of would-be attendees were turned away from this year’s L.A. Pride Festival – that didn’t stop us from partying in the street. With chart-topping pop stars like Kehlani and Tove Lo headlining this year’s L.A. Pride Festival, no one could have been surprised by an unusually high turnout. However, during this year’s Pride, the City of West Hollywood, along with the Pride organizers of Christopher Street West, saw an unexpected number of ticket sales and flooded streets on Saturday, June 9, causing parade-goers to be turned away by the thousands. No one saw it coming. Especially not the ticket holders who showed up from all around the country to participate in the legendary Pride festival. Alisha Broome came out from Florida to attend. “It was my first time coming to Pride. I came out over two years ago,” Broome said over the phone. “It was really exciting. We purchased the tickets way in advance. When we got there, we were told it was sold out, they weren’t letting anyone through. Once we got up to the front of the line, we were told it was a fire hazard. They were at full capacity. There was no information given about how we would go about getting refunded.” Before any of the performances began, helicopters circled in the sky, and thousands of ticket-buyers were being told by the L.A. Fire Department that the venue was full. “There was no direct contact information to get ahold of anyone in regard to ticket sales or refunds,” said Broome. “It was just a lot.” Other would-be Pride participators agreed. After the festival began turning people away, Twitter blew up with angry responses from ticket holders who were left with no information about how to get their money back or how to move forward. “F*** LA Pride.” Tweeted user @OCNew. “They took our money, said you could pick up tix at will call. You couldn’t. Cops saying leave or get locked up.Then Pacific Design Center charging $25 for parking and giving no refunds. Sooooo I paid all that money just to drive to WEHO!” “LA Pride was so horrible.” Another user, @mkygod, tweeted after being denied entry. “Waited almost 2 hours in line only for the line to stop at the gate due to full capacity. Then they made people wait another hour before telling everyone in line to go home via helicopter.” Some attendees found that the disorganization of Pride created not just unpleasant, but outright dangerous situations of the same type that Christopher Street West and the LAPD were trying to prevent. “Extreme ticket overselling, dangerous overcrowding, police with pellet guns, and a scary near miss with a girl attempting to jump off the parking structure (which went unnoticed by authorities,)” tweeted @wondermIm. “#lapride should. have. done. Better.”

Gay L.A. Veteran Assaulted by Neighbors

Ryan Gierach, a former publisher of WeHo News, is dealing with homophobia in his own neighborhood.

In the days of corporate sponsored-Pride, it’s sometimes easy to forget that prejudice has persisted despite the massive progress of the last few decades. And yet, against the backdrop of the first sold-out Los Angeles Pride on Saturday night, a gay Air Force veteran and former WeHo News publisher has accused his San Pedro neighbors of homophobic harassment and physical assault. Ryan Gierach is used to covering the news – he’s less accustomed to being the news. “For 20 years now I've covered this sort of thing happening to other people,” he told KTLA reporter John Fenoglio in an emotional on-camera interview. “And it hurt

me deeply every time it happened to other people.” Gierach says the abuse from his neighbors began as soon as he moved in two years ago. “When I came here my neighbors directly across from me began calling me names – all of them revolving around gay epithets,”

he said. But the level of harassment escalated in the last month when he hung a rainbow flag in front of his house for Pride Month. His neighbors responded by hurling anti-gay comments at him, throwing garbage at him, and assaulting him, he claims. He captured the episode on video, in which two women and a child are seen mocking him and one woman spits at him. In the video, one woman taunts him through his screen door, jeering at him before spitting on Gierach through the door. According to KTLA, police have confirmed that the incident constitutes battery. Before this, someone posted fliers around the neighborhood that listed his home address and accused Gierach of pedophilia, he told KTLA. “Arert!” the flier reads in large, all-capital letters – an apparent misspelling of “alert.” The flier continues by accusing Gierach of being “a child molesting sex offender” and

calling him by a homophobic epithet. “This is relying on an old gay stereotype that gays are pedophiles, long disproven by all science,” said Shedrick Davis, a lawyer with the LGBT advocacy group Lambda Legal, reading from a statement to KTLA. “This counts as slander.” Like most LGBTQ+ folk, Gierach experienced discrimination throughout his life. He served in the Air Force until he was kicked out for his sexuality – a policy that has since ended for gay and lesbian service members, although transgender people continue to face discrimination under Trump Administration policies. After filing numerous police reports, the Los Angeles Police Department is now investigating Gierach’s neighbors. But Gierach would rather not turn to the police to end the harassment – or, he’d rather not need to turn to the police. What he wants is to be treated with respect.

POLITICS OF PUBLICITY

Stormy Takes on Hollywood When Stormy Daniels Came to WeHo, the Media Had a Field Day.

“Twelve inches?” balked a man waiting in line at Chi Chi LaRue’s, a lingerie and sex store in West Hollywood, California. He pointed at various other doodads hanging near the “Blackballed” and its counterpart, the “Big White Cock,” demanding explanations from a companion. But they were not in line for a 12-inch silicone dildo, nor were they in line for a cock ring, a penis extender, a masturbator, or any of the other sexual paraphernalia surrounding the scores of people in line. Like hundreds of others on Wednesday, they were waiting for an autograph and photo with Stormy Daniels, the porn star-cum-political figure who made a visit to West Hollywood to receive a key to the city and promote her new T-shirt line, #TeamStormy. Seven news trucks lined the block in front of Chi Chi’s and the crowd in front of the store bulged with dozens of photographers, reporters, cameramen, and a gaggle of conservative vloggers carrying selfie-sticks or accompanied by a confederate with a camera. It had all the elements of a story in 2018. An on-the-nose hashtag campaign, the blurring between politics and business, the efforts of a powerful man to silence a woman, protesters and counter-protesters, the media, and, of course, looming in the background, Donald Trump. As soon as Stormy took the podium, hands with camera phones jutted out of the crowd like a porcupine raising its quills. “As a woman with two wonderful gay days, Keith and JD,” she said, gesturing to two men standing behind her in an apparent joke as neither of the men are her actual fathers, “I feel especially at home here.” “How small is Trump?!” someone shouted from the back – you know, lest we forget that Stormy has (allegedly) seen the President’s Chief of Staff. But Stormy pressed on. “And this community has a history of standing up to bullies and speaking truth to power, and I am so

very, very lucky to be a part of it.” To a remarkable degree, Stormy Daniels is the perfect patron Saint of West Hollywood, a community built by sexual outlaws. The LGBTQ community and minority communities in general have long turned towards parodying the dominant culture around them as an act of protest and an assertion of identity. Stormy Daniels herself – the persona, not Stephanie Cliffords, the person behind it – functions as a parody not just of Donald Trump, but of the culture that elected him. She’s a larger-thanlife character who trades in shameless sexual pageantry that defies cultural norms in a way that reveals deeper hypocrisies in society. She’s a troll – albeit an earnest troll – tailor-made to irritate conservatives in the same way that Trump enrages liberals. Not to suggest that this is conscious on Daniels’ part, but what certainly is intentional is West Hollywood’s embrace of her. Her appearance at Chi Chi’s was originally intended just to unveil her #TeamStormy shirts, an undisguised effort to monetize her political cache, but then the city got involved a week before the event. City Hall’s endorsement and the ceremony provided cover for Stormy. Suddenly, the T-shirts became like merch at a concert – secondary to the music; not the main attraction itself. West Hollywood’s government, for its part, received ample validation in terms of national attention. In terms of press coverage, the event was an unparalleled success. “When I pulled up to the store and there were two blocks of news trucks,” Rob Novinger, who co-runs Chi Chi LaRue’s, told me. “I was just like, 'What the fuck?’”

“I think everyone was surprised by the overwhelming media attention,” he said. Not least of all, the media itself. Many different sects of the media showed up to the fracas, from mainstream outlets like CNN, ABC, and Vice, to fringe elements like Breitbart and a coterie of self-produced conservative YouTubers and vloggers. One person in particular seemed to captivate the media’s attention more than most (aside from Stormy and Avenatti), a drag performer and pop-artist named Sham Ibrahim. As soon as Sham showed up to the scene in an electric blue dress with a shock of teal hair swooping across her forehead and a large sign reading “Stormy for President,” she was beset by the press – especially conservative reporters, attracted by the madefor-clickbait optics. And while Sham talked about her adoration for Daniels – “I may have the dick, but Stormy has the balls,” she told one Right-leaning vlogger with a selfie stick – she also brought with her two framed original works of pop-art, one depicting a defiant Stormy Daniels staring off into the distance, the other showing a baby’s body with Donald Trump’s adult head sitting in diapers and playing with a baby-sized cutout of America. “I want to give these to Stormy,” she told me. A Breitbart reporter live-streaming the event on his phone soon found Sham, who was more than happy to speak with the reporter and his thousands of viewers. The interview drew plenty of spectators worried about the potential combustibility of a conversation between the “Alt-Right” website and a West Hollywood drag queen.

“The key to the city, what does that get you in West Hollywood?” “The key to the city might get you, like, faster access to a restroom in a bar,” she deadpanned. Both the reporter and onlookers laughed. Stormy is not the anti-Trump. She’s not his opposite – she’s his inverse. While Trump is a powerful man who has been dogged by his sexual past, Daniels – a karmic product of those indiscretions – is a relatively powerless woman who has embraced and weaponized her sexual history. Despite the differences, what they have in common is a very public sex life. But while this fact plagues Trump, it empowers Daniels. But beyond any of that, what has made Stormy the perfect political foil for Donald Trump is that fact that she, too, is a brand. Even her lawyer refers to her by her stage name. Stephanie Cliffords, as a real person, is unsuited to challenge Trump. Stephanie Cliffords has a daughter. Stephanie Cliffords has two 24/7 bodyguards who live at her home. Stephanie Cliffords is probably a bit afraid. But as Stormy Daniels – as the star of Sex, Lies & Spies and Camp Cuddly Pines Powertool Massacre – she’s a character in a reality political drama. Her name appears on DVD boxes,T-shirts, and strip club marquees; his shows up on steaks, ties, and, of course, distinctly phallic buildings. She is a brand warring against another. That doesn’t mean she isn’t co-opting the narrative of “resistance,” but she is far from the only one. That’s what everyone was doing on Wednesday, in one way or another – hoisting their sails in the mysterious winds of public attention and hoping to get a little further ahead while the squall lasts.

Cedars-Sinai Shifts Into Transgender Care The hospital expands its primary care program for transgender patients.

In the U.S., many hospitals either are not equipped for proper care for transgender patients or they do not address and handle them with respect and proper pronouns, which can make the already difficult experience of seeking healthcare and dealing with health concerns even more trying. With this in mind, Cedars-Sinai recently announced that they will provide transgender primary care in both Beverly Hills and Culver City. Transgender care programs at Cedars-Sinai have expanded from being one of only two academic medical centers in the Western U.S. that offer gender-affirmation genital surgery to now include quality medical care for all aspects of their health. The hospital’s gender-affirmation surgery allowed many people who were refused care and coverage by physicians and insurance companies access to transition. For years, gender-affirmation surgery was limited to private clinics, which did not accept many medical insurance options. Now Cedars-Sinai has taken another step forward from providing some of the best care in gender-affirming surgery needs to include a more comprehensive set of programs for transgender patients. According to a 2017 National Public Radio survey, 31 percent of transgender people in the U.S. say they have no regular doctor or form of healthcare, and that the fear of discrimination plays a major role in that. “It is such a privilege to take care of the transgender community, which historically has had poor access to care,” said Carl A.Violano, MD, one of Cedars-Sinai primary care physicians with years of expertise in the field of transgender healthcare. “I feel a deep sense of responsibility to provide excellent care to our transgender patients.” The medical center introduced a new interdisciplinary, research-based Transgender Surgery and Health Program headed by a leader in the field to ensure the team of specialist aid patients through every step in their journeys. Some of these comprehensive healthcare programs include vocal cord and speech therapy, HIV care, hormone management, fertility preservation and mental health services. “It’s important to recognize that not all LGBTQ community members have access to quality medical care. We’re striving to meet a critical need,” said Mary Clare Lingel, vice president of Strategic Integration at Cedars-Sinai Medical Network. The transgender community can now celebrate a more joyful Pride Month knowing hospitals like Cedars-Sinai are working to make the best care available.

Once upon a time, Eastsiders had their own Pride celebration and block party in Silver Lake.

We all know the story of the first L.A. Pride Parade, initiated by the Reverend Troy Perry in 1970. The celebration was conceived of partly as a protest against police brutality, and partly as a way for the West Coast to commemorate the Stonewall Riots. But when it comes to L.A. Pride’s Eastside counterpart, the Sunset Junction Street Fair, many younger Angelenos are in the dark. Although the Sunset Junction fair, begun in 1980 and shut down in 2011, was always a smaller affair than the West Hollywood-based official L.A. Pride parade, it packed an enormous punch during its 30 operative years. With live performances by groundbreaking artists like Chaka Khan, The Supremes, and Slater-Kinney, Sunset Junction set the tone for a more grassroots Pride celebration. According to the L.A. Business Journal, the first fair in 1980 was held as a kind of peace offering. Longtime Latinx residents and newer gay and queer implants (like the ones who rioted at Silver Lake’s the Black Cat in 1967) were butting heads over issues of gentrification, and the fair was a way to break bread, listen to great live music, and co-exist while supporting local businesses. As the festival grew in size, it changed from a smaller neighborhood block party to an all-out

Pulse Survivors Sue Police

Orlando Police are Accused of a Lack of Response to Shooting.

A number of survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting and families of those slain have filed a lawsuit alleging that Orlando law enforcement failed to prevent or sooner bring the massacre to a stop. The lawsuit comes just days before the two-year anniversary of the June 12, 2016 shooting. More than 35 individuals signed on to the suit as plaintiffs, including six people shot during the Pulse shooting, six family members of individuals killed in the attack, 20 uninjured survivors, and a former police officer who responded to the shooting, as reported by the Orlando Sentinel. The lawsuit singles out Adam Gruler, an off-duty police officer that was trusted to guard the parking lot of Pulse the night of the shooting, and 30 “John Doe” police officers unnamed in documents at the moment. “These defendants chose to allow the patrons of the club to be massacred while these defendants ensured only that they themselves were safe,” the lawsuit reads. “These defendants knew that there were innocent people being massacred and that they themselves were the only ones who could stop it, and that it was their job to do so, yet they still, in a manner that shocks the conscience, chose to disregard the safety of the patrons while instead ensuring only that they themselves were safe.” The suit says failure to protect those inside Pulse violated plaintiffs’ civil rights and that police were “deliberately indifferent” to those rights. Of Gruler, the suit says his actions were “so egregious and outrageous it shocks the conscience.” Gruler provided security in the parking lot for Pulse most of the night but left his post to track down a suspected individual going into the club with a fake ID. During that time, shooter Omar Mateen, who’d been in the club ear-

lier that night, pulled a rental van into the parking lot and pulled out a Sig Sauer MCX rifle and Glock handgun before returning to Pulse and shooting patrons. The suit specifically highlights the danger of Gruler’s decision to leave his station: “Defendant Gruler knew that abandoning his post was inherently dangerous and would practically invite violence, but he abandoned his post anyway.” Security footage of the shooting shows Mateen re-entered the club at 2:01 a.m. While Gruler fired at Mateen from the

parking lot, he did not follow the shooter into the club. Gruler testified in the March trial for Mateen’s widow and afterward spoke to The Advocate. When asked if he would have responded differently in retrospect, he declined to hypothesize and instead said the community in advance of the twoyear anniversary should focus on healing together. The City of Orlando and the Orlando Police Department released a statement declining to comment on the lawsuit

specifically but reiterating that “On the morning of June 12, 206, federal, state and local law enforcement officers and first responders put themselves in harm’s way to save as many lives as possible.” At a press conference announcing the lawsuit, Pulse survivor Keinon Carter, who was pronounced dead at multiple points while being treated for his injuries, said his life had been changed forever by the event. “Victims of the Pulse shooting deserved better security and protection than what was provided,” he said.

The AIDS/LifeCycle Ride Continues.

With thousands of eye-catching cyclists drawing even more attention than usual on day two of the AIDS/LifeCycle that took place from June 3 - 9, the supporters of the cause drew even more awareness to it with the donning of orange as they blazed down the coast of California. Co-produced by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center, the event aims, each year, to shed light on the disease and improve the quality of life for those living with the condition that still has a long way to go in being fully understood. To honor these goals, the race sees thousands of participants joining in on the ride from NorCal to SoCal, whether in the form of cyclists, roadies, volunteers or virtual cyclists – each serving their own unique purpose in the recognition of HIV/AIDS and the continued need to remain vigilant about the condition and its cure. With the multi-pronged intent to fund the work of both the SF AIDS Foundation and the LA LGBT center, honor those who have died from the disease, increase the number of participants in the community and create a positive experience for those involved in the race suffering from HIV/AIDS, Orange Safety Day is of particular note for its colorful bombast. Other highlights from the day included a pit stop at Mission Soledad, alternately referred to as “Otter Pop Stop,” where plenty of participants were able to express themselves with more than just one colorful pop besides orange. Because, you know, like Madonna said, “Express yourself, don’t repress yourself,” even if you do it through the sartorial.

TURNED AWAY ... continued from page 1

TURNED,

from page 1 Even pop star Kehlani, one of L.A. Pride’s headliners, spoke out about her disappointment in regard to the festival’s organization. With Pride being advertised and sold more like a music festival than a community event, West Hollywood and the Pride organizers quickly had trouble on their hands. On Monday, June 11, the City of West Hollywood put out a statement addressing the overbooked festival. The SATC Anniversary Takes Over The Standard.

Just because “Sex and the City” was a quintessentially New York show doesn’t mean that L.A. didn’t glom onto it just as much as every delusional young woman that moved to the Big Apple as a direct result of Carrie Bradshaw’s impossible-dream lifestyle. And yet, those who went to the West Coast to pursue acting pre-Time’s Up might be regretting it just as much as those women now still paying off their credit cards from time spent trying to “look for life and love in the big city,” as Laney Berlin (Dana Wheeler-Nicholson) so condescendingly put it in Season 1. Despite “SATC’s” lie in peddling the grand myth about New York’s potential for fulfilling all your fantasies both sexual and career-oriented, people still love it.And those people of the Angeleno persuasion recently chose to celebrate the show’s contribution to the pop culture lexicon (i.e. “funky spunk,” “he’s just not that into you,” “my vagina’s depressed,” etc.) at The Standard on June 7, just one day after the series originally premiered in 1998. Hosted by Lauren Garroni and Chelsea Fairless, the duo behind the Instagram account very responsible for keeping peak interest in the show alive, @everyoutfitonsatc, the venue for the party – The Standard in Hollywood – was, of course a deliberate homage to the two episodes it took to wrap up the narrative of the quartet realizing they kind of hate L.A. and just want to get back to New York, even if everything is a little too “bottom shelf, paper bag” there (Miranda, again, would have fared better in the NYC of now.) In keeping with the lauded specificity that @ everyoutfitonsatc has become known for (Thank God, because otherwise Garroni could never live down her smearing parodies of L.A.’s most beloved citizen Lana Del Rey with Whitney Rice in said role,) the event was titled “That Bunny Stole

My Bag!” Loyal viewers will of course remember this as Samantha’s exclamation after she loses her fake Fendi and assumes one of Hugh Hefner’s house bunnies stole it. Because what would an L.A. episode in the early 00s be without a little cameo from Hef? Even better than that, however, was Carrie Fisher’s (another late legend) appearance as the true owner of the home that Carrie thinks her current suitor, Keith Travers (Vince Vaughn, who just became a bona fide L.A. legend for getting a DUI,) owns.Alas, like everything that the short-lived cast of characters (including Matthew McConaughey as himself) in the two-part storyline that commenced with “Escape From New York” come to represent: L.A. is a carnival of illusions best only visited for no more than a fiveday stint if you at least want to leave with your original body parts intact (pubic hair included.) But L.A. still has a believer in Charlotte, with Kristin Davis making an appearance to give prizes to the best a.k.a. most “SATC”-dressed guests. Now if only “The Carrie Diaries” could get be given a second life if just as an excuse to throwing a party at the Chateau Marmont posing as a Chelsea Hotel pop-up.

Zachary Quinto to Produce Tab Hunter Biopic When Hollywood actor Tab Hunter came on the scene in the 1950s, he instantly struck a chord with audiences, becoming a bonafide teenage heartthrob. Audiences were quick to pick up on a hidden depth beneath Hunter’s boy-next-door veneer, and the young actor soon start branching out, recording hit pop songs, scoring his own TV show, and making a play for Rock Hudson’s hold on the top spot for household hunk. Of course, behind the scenes, Hunter’s story was far more complicated than his meteoric rise to success might suggest. Hunter, still active and thriving at 86, is

considered a queer pioneer, having officially come out as gay in his 2005 autobiography “Tab Hunter Confidential.” After the book was made into a documentary in 2015, Hunter’s secrets came to life, and he was embraced by the LGBTQ+ as an important figure in the movement. Today, co-producers Zachary Quinto and J.J. Abrams are committed to bringing one of Hunter’s hidden affairs to light with a new biopic. Entitled “Tab and Tony,” the film will focus on Hunter’s longterm relationship with fellow gay Hollywood star Anthony Perkins, who is best known for his iconic role as Norman Bates in “Psycho.” Quinto has been upfront about his gay sexuality since publically coming out in 2011.The “Star Trek” star has taken on a spate of queer roles since, from his work on Broadway revivals of “Angels in America” and “Boys in the Band” to his performance in last year’s “I Am Michael,” the controversial story of “ex-gay” Innovativeconvert Lending Professionals Michael Glatze. L’ART POUR L’ART

⚫ BY ANNETTE SEMERDJIAN

Queer Armenian Art Takes Center Stage

For the first time in the city’s history, Glendale is hosting LGBTQ+ pride celebrations for Pride month. Despite the city’s close proximity to Hollywood and growing diversity, Glendale is still rooted in the conservative values of its prominent Armenian community. For this reason, Armenian-owned Abril Bookstore and Roslin Art Gallery joined nonprofit organization Gay and Lesbian Armenian Society (GALAS) to present “The Many Faces of Armenians: A Celebration of Queer-Armenian Art.” The exhibit opened on June 8 at Roslin Art Gallery in Glendale and celebrates the qualities that mold the queer and Armenian identity from numerous artists who answered the question “What makes you queer?” The art presented in the exhibit represents more than Armenian-LGBTQ+ life, but also highlights notions of being the “other” – the parts of one’s identity that were shamed for being radically different now come to the forefront in an artistic embrace. The gallery will also host an array of events with the exhibit for Pride month including film screenings, panel discussions, performances, book readings and more. The events not only are held in celebration of pride but also as an educational opportunity in hopes of bridging the gap between communities and fostering tolerance for all aspects of queer identity. One of the events will include a performance titled “Family Returning Blows” by New York author and performer Nancy Agabian about domestic violence exploring the power dynamics among genders. Although the Armenian population in Los Angeles has found solace for their intersectional identities through the embrace of the LGBTQ+ community in the city, that embrace still lacks within the cultural community they live in. GALAS board member Lousine Shamamian emphasizes the importance of holding Armenian LGBTQ+ events in Glendale in her interview with the Los Angeles Times, “For GALAS to be celebrating LGBTQ pride in Glendale – the heart of the Armenian diaspora – is a profound marker of the progress the LGBTQ Armenian community has made.” “The Many Faces of Armenians: A Celebration of Queer-Armenian Art” and other Glendale Pride events will be held through June 28.

“No More Heroes” is All About the Music WeHo World

By Keldine Hull, PRIDE L.A. Columnist

A new bar on Santa Monica urges patrons to do the Time Warp again. When one bar closes, another one opens. They’re a dime a dozen in the ever-evolving city of West Hollywood and only the strong survive. “Now Boarding” was a fun airline themed bar with great 90’s music on the weekend and the spiciest strawberry margarita I’ve ever tasted. I felt like I was somehow in the movie “Top Gun,” when I celebrated my birthday there two years ago, and was genuinely sad to see it go. Now in its place is quite possibly one of the best new bars I’ve been to this year. “No More Heroes,” located at 7746 Santa Monica Blvd., opened a month ago and is a music lover’s dream. If it’s ambience you’re looking for, ambience is what you’ll get. The theme of “No More Heroes” is apparent from the moment you step inside. The walls are covered with pictures of some of the most iconic artists of the last century, everyone from Elton John and Madonna to the Supremes and the Beatles. Towards the back is a massive, floor-toceiling black and white image from Woodstock ’69 that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time and into one of the greatest music moments in history. Old stereos and vintage vinyl stacked on top of the bar add the perfect finishing touch, taking me back to a place and time before iTunes, Smartphones, and the decline of America’s record stores. The name “No More Heroes” may sound a bit depressing and ominous but it was inspired by the song “No More Heroes” by English new wave group the Stranglers. Released in the fall of 1977, “No More Heroes” was a UK hit and reflected on the loss of great heroes, great artists, and the overall state of the world. Over 40 years later, the song’s tribute stands strong in the form of a bar that pays homage to the music legends we’ve lost and the others who remain. With images of David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, and Prince on the walls, it came as no surprise that the music at “No More Heroes” was by

far some of the best music I’ve heard in a bar in a long time. The DJ clearly got the memo and understood he could absolutely under no circumstances disappoint when it came to the music selection. (I would’ve walked out just as quickly as I walked in.) The Jacksons’ hit “I Wanna Be Where You Are” was followed by Frank Ocean’s “Monks,” “One of These Nights” by the Eagles, “Come Home” by Little Dragon, and Johnny “Guitar” Watson’s “Booty Ooty.” Much to the annoyance of my friends who joined me, I must’ve said “I love this song!” after pretty much every song. What’s more, the music was at just the right level where you could still hold a conversation without screaming at the person next to you. That’s a bonus in my book. A bar with a theme is not complete unless it has a cocktail menu that fits with the overall theme. Once again, “No More Heroes” did not disappoint. Specialty cocktails included Heroes, White Satin, Afternoon Delight, Free Falling, and Linda, Linda. (I appreciated all the references, and if you’re a fellow music lover, you get it too.) They also offer an interesting assortment of beer from Abita Light and Angel City Lager to Coopers Pale Ale and Delirium Tremens Belgian Strong Ale with a solid wine list to match. “No More Heroes” was a definite vibe. It was cool without trying, and I got the sense that everyone there appreciated the music just as much as I did. Considering that I happened to go on a Saturday night during Pride month, it was a chill environment compared to the wild times at other bars. I’ve had my fair share of drunken escapades in one of L.A.’s most energetic cities, some nights I remember and others not so much. Sometimes it’s a nice change of pace to go to a bar where you can just sit down, listen to some great music, and have a conversation with friends. “No More Heroe”s is a bar after my own heart. It’s all about the music, and I genuinely couldn’t ask for anything more.

GETTIN’ STRANGE

In “Alex Strangelove,” Love Ain’t Simple A new Netflix film tries to take on teen bisexuality.

“Alex Strangelove” is one in a series of new films about teens coming to grips with gayness.

Give PrEP a Shot!

If you took the time to see “Love, Simon” in theaters earlier this year, you’ll find a lot of similarities even in the first few minutes of the new Netflix film “Alex Strangelove.” A seemingly “normal” teenager who’s “just like you?” Check. A group of quirky bffs? Yup. An updated John Hughes film atmosphere? Of course. It’s a teen movie, after all. But like “Simon,” and unlike a bunch of other, slightly darker recent teen offerings like “Stranger Things” and “13 Reasons Why,” the discovery of a queer identity, in “Strangelove,” doesn’t seem to come with very high stakes. Like some of the best teen movies coming out these days, “Alex Strangelove” keeps the hero’s struggle largely internal. The problem with this? Film is a visual medium, and for most of the story, the choice to keep first-person narrator Alex largely alienated from the discovery of his own sexuality, keeps the audience shut out as well. If we were being generous, we could say that this was the point “Strangelove’s” filmmaker (Craig Johnson) was trying to make. Even in a liberal climate where coming out as gay isn’t seen as being a career-ending or especially life-changing move, it’s still hard and painful to do. In fact, it’s still almost impossible to spot if you’re not looking for it. And if you’re bisexual, as hero Alex (sort of?) is, you might not really be looking for it. That is, until it comes looking for you, in the form of a sexy out-gay kid from another school who magically shows up at a party. This is all well and good, but “Alex Strangelove” still isn’t exactly the kind of story that’s going to help break down barriers,

especially when it comes to the bisexual community. For a film that begins with the teasing premise of a truly bisexual coming out, “Strangelove” takes its time coming to the ultimately disappointing conclusion that all our main character needed to do was to come out as 100 percent gay in order to make things better. There would be absolutely nothing wrong with this if the film, like “Love, Simon,” was marketed as a gay coming-out story. But “Strangelove” promised, with its coy promo image of a boy in between another boy and a girl covered by a giant question mark, to be a story about the complications of bisexuality, a topic that’s woefully under-discussed and, perhaps more importantly, under-explored in current LGBTQ+ films. When it comes to coming out stories, it’s certainly nice to project an image of a world that won’t stone you to death once you speak your truth. However, for many gay, bi, and questioning kids around the country, the solution to the problem of identity isn’t just deciding to come out as one thing or the other. It’s about learning not to viewing identity – however complex – as a problem to begin with, much less a problem with any kind of a solution in view. “Strangelove” is a cute, sweet movie about a kid learning to be who he is, and no matter how many times we see those much longed-for images of two boys kissing while their high school classmates look on approvingly, it’s never going to get old, at least not anytime soon. The hope, however, is that primer efforts like “Strangelove,” with all their old-fashioned “Breakfast Club” idealism, will make way for more complex interpretations of queerness down the line. That is, once filmmakers realize that we don’t need that kind cinematic of hand-holding anymore. Don’t worry: We’ll wait.

GIVE IT A WATCH

` ⚫ BY HENRY GIARDINA

“Pose” Premiere Electrifies Ryan Murphy’s take on the ball culture of the 1980s meets our (very high) expectations.

In the early 90s, two cultural events turned the nation’s focus toward New York City’s previously under-the-radar ball scene. The first was the release of Madonna’s single “Vogue,” the video for which existed as a direct visual reference to the underground trans women and drag artists who danced in the basements of New York buildings after dark, using extravagant gowns and poses to ape the signifiers of the Reaganist more-is-more ethos of the late 1980s. The second event came about a year later in 1991, when Jennie Livingston’s documentary “Paris is Burning” took a deep dive into the ballroom scene, focusing in on the individual lives of trans and queer people of color who walked the runways at night and did what they needed to do to survive by day. While the sterling reputation of “Paris is Burning” remains intact, “Vogue” remains a point of controversy in the LGBTQ+ community. Did Madonna, by paying homage to ball culture, ultimately end up stealing from it? Does the existence of commercialized drag competitions like “RuPaul’s Drag Race” prove that “Vogue” turn an entire art form into something hopelessly shallow? Or did “Vogue,” by introducing straight, white audiences to the world of ballroom culture, actually do a great thing for the scene, turning it from a historical footnote into a landmark cultural event? As you may have guessed, the answer varies depending on you’re talking to. One thing, at least, is certain: However you might feel about “Vogue,” RuPaul, or drag in general, you’re going to have a hard time finding fault with Ryan Murphy’s “Pose,” the much-anticipated TV series that features a nearly all-trans POC cast to take on the sumptuous, gritty world of the 1980s ball scene. In addition to bringing together a trans-centric cast and production crew, composed of newcomers, seasoned models (like “Strut’s” Dominique Jackson,) and transgender luminaries (like Janet Mock, who worked on the show,) Murphy announced before the show’s premiere that all the proceeds would go to LGBTQ+ charities. So we knew Murphy’s heart was in the right place: But was the show going to be good?

Photos: Pose FX.

In “Pose,” trans women compete to gain each others’ respect, and to find a place in the culture.

“Good” is not the word to describe “Pose,” a show that captures the aspirational beauty, tragedy, and struggle of minority artists and sexual outcasts living in AIDS-era New York. Like the best work coming out these days, “Pose” tells the story of a group of down-and-out individuals who are striving against incredible obstacles just to live a life they can merely deal with, much less enjoy. Some of them – like Blanca, who learns she’s HIV positive in the pilot, a near-death sentence in 1987 – don’t even have much life left to live. But they go on. As does Angel, the sex worker who slays on the ballroom floor, and Damon, a kid who comes to New York to pursue dance after being kicked out the house for being gay. The characters of “Pose” come together initially out of desperation, but quickly learn to adapt. Chosen family becomes the only family that matters, and in the competing houses of the underground ballroom scene, the women receive from their rivals what they’ve been dying to get from the outside world that barely knows they exist: A sense of scrutiny. A voice that says, “we see you, do better, you matter.” The kind of vicious, biting criticism whose cruelty reveals a sense of caring and attention that they won’t find anywhere else in the world. The world of “Pose” is exhilarating, and the queerest thing we’ve yet seen on TV.

STAR GAZING By Samuel Prince

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Aries will spend today without major victories. At the finale of the work week, you will be occupied solely with something that has nothing to do with your career. In the evening you will rush to where a person who is especially dear to you is waiting. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Taurus today will give up resisting changes in their personal living space. This is at a time when your beloved partner is determined to modify the interior, using the services of professional designers. Before giving a definitive “no” to such projects, think again. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) Gemini today will lose in a conversation with their other half. Your partner will refuse to admit that they were fundamentally wrong when talking to one of your parents. If you do not want your parents to continue to be treated so disrespectfully, state this clearly. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Cancers should not hide your heart behind hundreds of locks. Determine who or what makes you so much afraid of a new love affair. The person who suggested that you start a new romance is worthy of respect, admiration, and the right to be with you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Leos today will be guided by vanity and selfishness. Because of them, you venture to make a deal with your own conscience. In order to become famous, you will set up one of your friends or relatives. Success will come to you, but the price you paid for it will be prohibitive. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Virgo will not find it easy to understand the true intentions of his second half. They will hint that they want to spend the next weekend alone with you. However, as soon as you offer a specific itinerary for this romantic trip, they will change their mind. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) Libra will not experience joy or anxiety today. Remembering that on Saturday you will have to work again, you will refuse to attend a traditional Friday party at the house of your best friend. This evening you will be alone with some video project. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) Scorpios today will determine for themselves a new life plan for the near future. The number one item of this plan will be a very expensive purchase, which you will save for today. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Today it will be typical for Sagittarians to give an elaborate answer to the most simple questions. Thus, you will not pursue any goals. Expressing your thoughts in vague phrases, you will be in a distracted mood when you wake up. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Capricorns will spend today separated from the bustle. You will perceive what is happening around you, like a movie or some strange TV show, run by creative directors. You will be the winner by the end of this day. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Aquarius will spend this day doing business with family. You want to devote all your free time to your household, remembering that in the last few days you did not give them hugs, love and care. You even prepare a pleasant surprise for your relatives. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Pisces today will acquire a very useful object, capable of making household affairs less tedious. However, not all your relatives will like this thing. Representatives of the older generation will begin to grumble unhappily.
