Should California's Last Call Be at 4 a.m.? The Pride L.A. spoke with Club Ripples owner to see what he thinks about Senate Bill 905.

The potential to party until the sun comes up is now on the horizon. State Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) called on legislators to push alcohol sales to 4 a.m. for California cities with Senate Bill 905. The bill would affect seven major cities in California – three of which are in Los Angeles county – Los Angeles, Long Beach,West Hollywood, Sacramento, Palm Springs, San Francisco and Oakland. This would allow bars and nightclubs in these cities to sell alcohol at the same hours as places like New York City. California bars have operated until 2 a.m. since the end of prohibition. This new bill could change not only the economy of L.A., but the city culture as well. The bill’s advancement to state assembly has therefore been met with

some opposition. California Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA), Alcohol Justice and Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Koretz held a press event to oppose the bill earlier this month. Activists and the councilmember compared selling more alcohol to having more injuries and deaths. “If this passes we can expect more DUIs, more drunk driving injuries and more alcohol-related deaths,” Koretz said. "No district is an island and it is outrageous to call this a local discretion bill when its impacts will spill over into adjacent jurisdictions that will be stuck with the very expensive public safety bill — the cost of life and death.” The Pride L.A. spoke with the owner of Club Ripples in Long Beach, Larry Hebert, to get his take. In regards to his support of the bill, Hebert stated, “Give it a try.” “If they’re going to get drunk at midnight, then they’re going to get drunk at four,” Hebert said. “Responsible people will use Uber or Lyft or have a designated driver. Irresponsible people will get drunk anytime – they don’t care. So I don’t feel that there’s going to be a big difference.” He and his partner, John Garcia, have owned

Club Ripples for over 40 years. They also own a liquor store behind the club that sees a lot of the same customers. “I see when people leave my club they run over to my liquor store in the back and get alcohol before we close so they can take it home and party some more,” Herbert said. “There are some, but not all. It’s going to be hit or miss for different people and different lifestyles.” Hebert also stressed the importance of responsibility as a bar or club owner, saying that he or she must make sure that cus-

tomers get home safely. “I’ve driven customers home before and I’ve taken their keys from them, and they get mad but I don’t care,” he said. He and his partner are known to have strict rules as bar owners, such as making sure people who walk in already under the influence are not permitted inside the club. Drugs and sex are also not permitted on the premises. Although Hebert admits there are many other bars and clubs that operate otherwise, the vigilance and responsibility of bar, club and restaurant owners like himself can help create a safer community instead of fueling the dangers within it. “The Long Beach police know that I run a tight ship,” Herbert said. “We’re more of a neighborhood place where straight and gay people come and everybody has a good time.” If the bill gets signed into law, it will take effect in 2021 in order for bars, clubs and restaurants as well as each city to adjust to the new hours of operation. After five years, cities can decide how to continue or discontinue implementing the law. The bill was on its third reading as of Wednesday, Aug. 22.

A new bill could mandate specific training on sexual orientation and gender identity minority groups for entry-level peace offices and dispatchers. Assembly Bill 2504 – which the California Senate passed with a 37-0 vote – would require legislation to provide LGBT-specific educational training for individuals training to become peace officers and dispatchers as well as optional training for in-service officers. The bill is authored by Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Silicon Valley), Chair of the California Legislative LGBT Caucus. It is supported by Equality California and the Sacramento LGBT Center, among others. “California is home to the largest LGBTQ population in the country,” Low said.“This legislation is an active step toward keeping our community safer will increase trust in law enforcement within the LGBT community.” AB 2504 requires the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) to develop a course of training for California peace officers and dispatchers on issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity differences in order to create a more inclusive workplace and improve law enforcement’s effective-

ness in serving the LGBTQ+ community. Currently, California POST does not require any specific training on sexual orientation and gender identity minority groups for entry-level peace offices and dispatchers and there is no in-service or on-going training requirement. Peace officers are not trained in how to respond to incidents in which the citizens involved are LGBT. The California POST Learning Domain 42 “Cultural Diversity” Student Workbook makes minimal mention of LGBT co-workers and citizens. Rates of domestic violence in same-sex relationships are comparable to opposite-sex relationships, according to a press release. Hate Crimes involving LGBT people continue to be the second most common bias motivation. Gay men and transgender women are particularly vulnerable and it has been reported that hate crimes based on sexual orientation are rising in California. “Improving law enforcement’s ability to communicate, recognize, and serve members of the LGBT community will improve trust in California’s law enforcement,” the press release stated.

AB 2504 will now return to the Assembly floor for a concurrence vote as of Wednesday, Aug. 22.

DOWN WITH CONVERSION THERAPY

PUTTING AN END TO GAY CONVERSION THERAPY Though conversion therapy for children has been banned in California for the past five years, State Legislature just recently declared adult conversion therapy a fraudulent practice. Assembly Bill 2943 is on the California Assembly floor as of Wednesday, Aug. 22 for a concurrence vote. The bill passed on the California Senate Floor with a 25-11 vote last week. “We as legislators have a responsibility to protect Californians from harmful and deceptive practices,” author of the bill Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Silicon Valley) said. “All Californians should be celebrated, cherished, and loved for who they are. I am grateful to my colleagues in the Senate for affirming their support for those in the LGBT community who need it most by voting for this bill.” Conversion therapy aims to change a patient’s sexual orientation through counseling, hypnosis, or in some rare cases, electric shock treatment. The American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, the American Counseling Association, the National Association of Social Workers and the American Medical Association all oppose the practice on the basis that it is not evidence-based and potentially harmful to the patient’s mental health. The practice also contributes to social stigma by characterizing homosexuality as a mental illness, a view that has been discredited for decades, according to a press release regarding AB 2943. “For far too long, LGBTQ Californians have been psychologically abused by sham therapists who are supposed to be caring for their emotional well-being,” Equality California Executive Director Rick Zbur said. “We're deeply grateful to Assemblymember Low, Senate Pro Tem Atkins and Senators Wiener, Lara and Galgiani for their leadership today — and to every member of the Senate who voted to protect LGBTQ Californians from these dangerous, harmful practices." In 2012, Senate Bill 1172 was signed into law to prohibit licensed mental health providers from performing sexual orientation change efforts with a patient under the age of 18. Violating this law subjects the provider to discipline by the provider’s licensing entity. AB 2943 would declare conversion therapy a fraudulent practice under the Consumer Legal Remedies Act. Doing so would extend certain consumer protections to individuals harmed by sexual orientation change efforts. The bill is co-authored by all members of the California Legislative LGBT Caucus and supported by Equality California, the Human Rights Campaign, the Los Angeles LGBT Center, the Sacramento LGBT Center, the Trevor Project, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the Stonewall Democratic Club, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the California Medical Association, and the Consumer Attorneys of California.

FILM REVIEW – Experiencing Conversion Therapy

The Miseducation of Cameron Post BEHIND THE SCREEN By Kathryn Whitney Boole “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” is based on a true story written in novel form Emily M. Danforth. It takes place in the early 90’s when it was not generally acceptable to come out as gay. We live in a different time, although conversion camps still exist such as the one where this story takes place. The film premiered at Sundance 2018, where it won the US Grand Jury Prize. Cameron Post, played beautifully by the talented Chloe Grace Moretz, dutifully attends the Bible Study classes to which she is sent to by her conservative aunt who cares for her after the death of her parents. Cameron acts on her attraction to a female classmate in this Bible Study group and later is caught making out with the girl she has double-dated with at prom. As a result, she is packed off to “God’s Promise” religious camp where she and fellow live-in attendees must each sign an induction contract committing them to defeat the “illness” of samesex attraction, or “SSA.” The question remains,

are these kids sent to the institution because they are thought to be ill, or because they are perceived subliminally as a threat to the lifestyles and religious beliefs of their parents, guardians and members of their church groups. Chloe Grace Moretz does not shy away from giving an all-out, very real, graphic performance as Cameron. At age 21, Chloe has experience beyond her years. She has been acting since she was seven. She is not afraid to take on a controversial role. In 2010, at thirteen, she appeared as Hit-Girl in the film “Kick-Ass” and again in “Kick-Ass 2” in 2013. Her role as a child in this comic book-inspired violent action film spurred controversy, yet won her critical acclaim. In real life, Chloe has described her own family as “very Christian” and at the same time has publicly supported LGBTQ equality. She calls herself a feminist and has rejected roles that she considers overtly sexualized or mere female plot devices. Also notable are Sasha Lane as Cameron’s friend Jane Fonda, Forrest Goodluck (who was Hawk in “Revenant”) as Reverend Rick and John Gallagher Jr (Jim Harper in “Newsroom”) as Reverend Rick, a counselor at the camp who has supposedly been “cured” and is now dealing with

an undercurrent of painful personality issues. The camera works with the actors to capture unspoken feelings as it lingers on their facial reactions. This is a well-directed, powerful film. Ironically, the placement together of these teens at the conversion camp has the effect of unifying those who have been outcast by their peers and their communities. Cameron and her two new best friends gain strength, courage and power to take back their lives, though not in the way the camp’s proprietors intended. Kathryn Whitney Boole has spent most of her life in the entertainment industry, which has been the backdrop for remarkable adventures with extraordinary people. She is a Talent Manager with Studio Talent Group in Santa Monica. kboole@gmail.com

Steps to a Healthy, Happy Liver With Barbara Bishop

Last week, I had my gallbladder removed. My doctors discovered that it was inflamed, and contained many gallstones. One of the gallstones was stuck in a pathway where the gallbladder, pancreas and liver distilled and digested the food and drinks I consumed. It was the most excruciating pain I have experienced. And no matter what I did, the pain would not subside without some powerful prescription drugs that I certainly did not want to use on a regular basis. My liver and pancreas enzyme levels were off the charts (that’s not good.) My eyes were a little yellowish, I was throwing up and I had a rash all over my body (that’s not good either.) And my pee and poo (can I talk about them in public?) were turning weird colors. The only reason I went to the doctor to get checked out was because I had that rash all over my body, and it was hideously unattractive. Thank goodness for my healthy ego! Miraculously, my body managed to pass the stone soon after the appointment. But the gallbladder had to go. Everyone says that the gallbladder doesn’t do much when it comes to staying healthy. As

far as I’m concerned, it now leaves my liver exposed to all the toxins that the gallbladder was able to distill. Now that I don’t have that safety net, there’s no way around it; I need to drastically change my habits so that my liver stays healthy and happy. I know the drill – eat more veggies, get more exercise, lose more weight. But there were a few that Web MD listed that caught me by surprise: Drink Coffee People who drink a few cups of coffee a day may be less likely to get liver diseases. Filtered, instant and espresso all seem to work. My personal choice is Yuban – my favorite of all coffees. Sorry Starbucks! Supplements Can Cause Liver Damage Supplements cause almost a quarter of all liver damage. Herbs like borage, comfrey, groomwell and coltsfoot have pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can gum up the tiny blood vessels inside the organ, either over time or all at once Other herbs like Atractylis gummifera, Camellia sinensis, celandine, chaparral, germander and pennyroyal oil (used in tea) can also cause liver problems. I don’t take any of them. They all taste like dirt and give me heartburn. Liver Remedies Can Also Cause Liver Damage Common liver remedies like milk thistle,

Adult Swim Workouts

turmeric and astragalus don't have much research behind them. Colloidal silver, sometimes used (with little scientific support) for hepatitis C, can cause irreversible side effects like turning your skin blue. From yellow to blue. Attractive. Avoid Toxins These might be chemicals in cleaning products, insecticides and spray cans. They could hurt cells in your liver if you touch, absorb or breathe in too much of them. You can protect yourself if you wear a mask and goggles and open the windows when you use them. I wonder if using bleach to turn my hair blonde is a toxic substance. Hmm. I’ll take my chances. Green Tea It's brimming with a type of antioxidant called catechins. Research suggests it may protect against some forms of cancer, including liver. You'll get more catechins if you brew tea yourself and drink it hot. Iced tea and ready-to-drink green teas have much lower levels. Almonds Nuts are good sources of vitamin E, a nutrient that research suggests may help protect against fatty liver disease. Almonds are good for your heart, too, so grab a handful the next time you feel like snacking. Or try them in salads, where they add a nice crunch. My favorite nut!

A cup of coffee not only warms the soul, it can help protect your liver as well!

Herbs and Spices Want to protect your liver and your heart at the same time? Sprinkle on some oregano, sage or rosemary. They're a good source of healthy polyphenols. An extra benefit: they help you cut back on salt in many recipes. I just planted an herb garden that contains parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, oregano and basil. I started using them this week. I feel so organic! Practice Safe Sex If you’re like me, not having it is the best way to practice safe sex (not by choice, damn it.) But if you do have sex, protect yourself from conditions that can spread through sex. One, hepatitis C, infects the liver directly and can do serious harm over time. Most people don’t notice they have it until many years later, when much of the damage has been done.

The Struggles of Alzheimer’s for LGBTQ+ Elders

Alzheimer’s is never easy for anyone, but especially the LGBTQ+ community. “LGBT individuals can often face additional challenges that need to be considered and addressed to ensure this population gets respectful and competent care,” Sam Fazio, Ph.D., director of quality care and psychosocial research at Alzheimer’s Association said. A recent Alzheimer’s Association and SAGE study identifies the unique challenges facing LGBT older adults living with Alzheimer's and other dementias and their caregivers. The study outlines the unique issues that arise when Alzheimer’s disease, sexual orientation and gender identification and expression intersect, allowing advocates and care providers to better meet the needs of LGBT elders and their caregivers facing dementia. It is estimated that there are 2.7 million LGBT people over age 50 living in the United States. That number is increasing rapidly as baby boomers age and more people self-identify as LGBT. New research presented at the 2018 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference found that about one in 13 lesbian, gay or bisexual seniors in the United States are living with dementia. Dementia rates for the LGBTQ+ population are 7.4 percent, compared to about 10 percent for the general population. “While the LGBT community faces similar health concerns as the general public, LGBT people who receive a dementia di-

agnosis and LGBT caregivers face uniquely challenging circumstances,” SAGE CEO Michael Adams said. “This study shines a light on these challenges, so we can begin taking steps to address them and improve the care and support LGBT people receive.” Despite recent advances in LGBT rights, LGBT older people are often marginalized and face discrimination. likely to age without a spouse or partner, twice as likely to live alone and three to four times less likely to have children – greatly limiting their opportunities for support. There’s also a lack of transparency, as 40 percent of LGBT older people in their 60s and 70s say their healthcare providers don’t know their sexual orientation. The study identifies seven areas which

Stigma Social isolation Poverty Health disparities Sexuality and sexual expression Barriers to utilizing existing services Living with HIV/AIDS

LGBT individuals may not reach out for services and support because they fear poor treatment due to their LGBT identity, because they fear the stigma of being diagnosed with dementia, or both. Several studies document that LGBT elders access essential services, including visiting nurses, food stamps, senior centers, and meal plans, much less frequently than the general aging population. The Institute of Medicine identified the following pressing health issues for LGBT people: lower rates of accessing care (up to 30 percent); increased rates of depression; higher rates of obesity in the lesbian population; higher rates of alcohol and tobacco use; higher risk factors of cardiovascular disease for lesbians; and higher incidents of HIV/AIDS for gay and bisexual men. Risk factors for heart disease – including diabetes, tobacco use, high blood pressure and high cholesterol – are also risk factors for Alzheimer’s and stroke-related dementia.

Structured Success at The Biggest Loser Resort By Debra Hertzog

Biggest Loser Resort programs have a history of success; structured success built upon 5 main components during the week-long program. Participating guests are introduced to the foundations of nutrition, fitness, camaraderie, wellness and rejuvenation on day one, where a total body in-take assessment is conducted for each guest. Moans of disappointment over weight, body fat, water, muscle and a host of other bio-metric markers help the participant to understand the science of the body and how the Biggest Loser Resort structured program will help the guest to understand how their body works and how to benefit from the structure and discipline of each component. Fitness is typically assessed the first day, through timed fitness regiments that gauge the individual’s strength, endurance, heartrate and ability to move through activities. By the end of the week program, guests will conduct the same fitness assessment and see

a remarkable improvement in their timing, number of repetitions, endurance and various other factors that enhance their overall body’s fitness performance. Nutrition and culinary is beautifully presented in 3 main meals per day with two snacks provided during the main meal breaks. Calories, fat, carbohydrates are monitored through each meal and the program is customized based on the individual’s in-body assessments and nutritional need. Most guests are truly amazed at the wonderful and vast culinary treats and eye-pleasing presentations; not to mention healthy portion sizes to feed the body with the proper nutrition that it requires for the body to do its job. This is often a delightful surprise for those individuals who are on a perpetual diet of salads and rice cakes! Through Wellness Coaching, guests can see where their emotional needs are often camouflaged, and deeply hidden behaviors and patterns are realized through workshops like Emotional vs. Intuitive Eating. Participants

start to understand the nature of their cravings and the emotions behind constant snacking, mid-night binging, mindless eating. and poor nutritional choices at mealtimes. Rejuvenation is an often-forgotten component in many programs; but the Biggest Loser Resort program highlights the importance of taking time for the body to rest, recalibrate and rejuvenate. Our Biggest Loser Resorts offer spa services, jacuzzi and steam rooms, for this exact purpose of bringing full restoration of the muscles and lymphatic system into balance; which aids with fitness workouts and recovery of muscle and cellular memory. Lastly, the group camaraderie and deep, life-long friendships that are built during the week-long program is probably one of the big-

gest surprises that our guests comment about during our infamous final graduation day and celebration. Deep and lasting friendships are build and these friendships are grown out of an organic need to express the emotions while processing the transformation happening at the intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual level. It is not uncommon for our guest participants to build life-long friendships that span across the world and many of them arrange repeat visits for a reunion of friendship, laughter, and of course, The Last Chance Workout! Turning Back the Clock with Regenerative Therapy

World-renowned stem cell expert Dr. Lox, M.D. heals chronic pain. By Sam Catanzaro

What do Kobe Bryant, Peyton Manning and Rafael Nadal all have in common aside from their status as world-class athletes? They all have used regenerative therapy to extend their sports careers. While these athletes all are household names, another name you should know is Dr. Dennis M. Lox M.D. who is a superstar in the field of regenerative therapy, healing both athletes and everyday people alike right here in Beverly Hills. An emerging field of medicine led by physicians like Dr. Lox looks to treat muscle, ligament and joint injuries with stem cells. Known as regenerative therapy, this treatment option has been used by elite athletes like Tiger Woods and Derrick Rose and uses naturally occurring stem cells to treat a wide range of injuries for athletes and nonathletes alike. "Stem cells are repair cells. They are in certain parts of your body and create new cell types," Dr. Lox said. "They are found on your skin, your gastrointestinal tract, they are found in your bone marrow. They are found in numerous places throughout your body so it is just a matter of figuring out which ones can be used to help a particular patient.” Dr. Lox is a world-renown leader in regener-

ative therapy and was one of the field's early pioneers. As a multi-sport athlete who engaged in high-impact sports like downhill skiing, tennis, wrestling and boxing, Dr. Lox learned first-hand the toll these activities can have on the body and the inability of traditional sports medicine to bring lasting results. Now, after nine years of successfully using regenerative therapy to heal thousands of patients (including himself) Dr. Lox is convinced this is the best way to treat many joint and muscle related injuries. "You are helping to assist the body to heal itself," Dr. Lox said. “It’s an outpatient procedure and it is a simple injection. We utilize the patient’s own stem cells and by an injection, we transfer those to the affected area, whether it is a knee or shoulder.” What sets Dr. Lox apart from many other individuals practicing regenerative therapy is the way he tailors each procedure to the patient’s body. “There are people out there who are applying cookie-cutter treatments to patients,” Dr. Lox said. “Medicine does not work that way. No two patients are alike.” When a patient rehabilitates from a regenerative therapy procedure, they must make sure to take care of their body, so the same injury does not occur again. That being said, Dr. Lox says that with the proper care this procedure can make patients feel physically young again. "If you take proper care of it, this can be a game changer. You are really setting the clock of time back," Dr. Lox said. "We are talking about a spectrum and a continuum that is actually where pre-

While Dr. Lox sees a wide range of customers – from elite level athletes looking to get past a delibating injury to elderly individuals suffering from chronic joint pain – he says a common theme throughout his patients is a desire to avoid intrusive surgery. “A lot of people come to me because the surgeons don’t know what to do, they failed with cortisone shots, physical therapy didn’t get them better and Mortin is not working," Dr. Lox said.

"We can easily try to repair a muscle, or ligaments, or cartilage and in the case of arthritis, which is a worn joint, we can try to make it ‘younger’ and go back in time.” Dr. Dennis M. Dr. Alexander Assists Westside’s Hearing Impaired CAPTION:

By Keldine Hull

Dr. Melissa Alexander, founder of Alexander Audiology, diagnosis and treats patients with varying degrees of hearing loss. With two full time practices in Solvang and Santa Monica that service over 2,500 people, Dr. Alexander is one of the leading audiologists in the state. “I take someone who doesn’t know that they’re handicapped by their hearing loss or somebody who is extremely aware of their handicap, and I fit them with something that’s benign and easy to use. In five minutes, I can turn their life around.” After getting her first degree in political science, Dr. Alexander decided to explore working with her stepfather, an ear, nose, and throat doctor based in Los Angeles. She became inspired by an audiologist her stepfather worked with. “I was really drawn to the profession. He got to get to know patients, hear different stories, and really get to help them on a daily basis. I ended up going back to school to get a second Bachelor’s Degree in Sciences in Communicative Disorders and then went to graduate school. I got my doctorate in audiology after that.” What differentiates Alexander Audiology from other practices is their round the clock service to patients. “I don’t just do diagnostic hearing testing and hearing aid fitting. I give a concierge type of service. I can meet patients in their homes and their offices. I work on weekends and holidays and patients have my cell phone number. When you have a sense, like hearing, and on Saturday something suddenly goes wrong, and you can’t get the hearing aids to work, you really need to have someone who’s available to you to take care of you. We provide that service. Nobody in the area does that.” In addition, Dr. Alexander does pro-bono work, servicing those who need hear aids but don’t have the means to get them. “My concern isn’t that you obtain and pay for hearing aids; it’s that I can treat your hearing loss if you need hearing aids.

Hearing loss is a condition that can affect anyone.

I see lots of patients that financially can’t afford instruments. Hearing aids range in price from $1,000 a piece to $3,000 a piece depending on how sophisticated the hearing aid is. Most people need two hearing aids. I have a program where people can donate their hearing aids to charity. I’ll refurbish them through the manufacturer and donate them to someone who needs them. I present a lot of lectures, and so I see Holocaust survivors and their families. I work with them at no charge. I also work with MusiCares, which is a foundation that provides services to musicians who have had a rough time, whether it be drug and alcohol addiction, or financial trouble. We make custom musician ear plugs for them and do hearing testing.” Hearing loss is a condition that can affect anyone, from newborns to geriatrics, and Dr. Alexander encourages patients to

be proactive when it comes to their hearing. “Hearing loss is insidious so it happens in many cases gradually over time. In most cases, because it happens over such a long period of time, you really don’t know what you’re not hearing. Everyone should have a baseline hearing test starting in their 40’s unless they feel that the hearing is compromised even prior to that. We’re seeing patients get fit with hearing aids younger and younger. Most of the time it’s due to noise exposure and you don’t even realize. We used to think, even when I was in graduate school ten years ago, that hearing loss was an age- related phenomenon. But it really isn’t. We’ve done lots of studies of patients in societies like Los Angeles and New York where there’s noise around you and areas like Papau New Guinea, non- industrialized areas where people are not exposed to noise. We find that most of the time, we’re seeing patients with noise exposure. That combined with genetics really is the root cause of most hearing losses. We have to put down the stigma that hearing aids are for old people or because you get hearing aids that means you’re aging.” The kind of dedicated care that Dr. Alexander offers to her patients through Alexander Audiology requires time and focus but helping someone reclaim their ability to hear makes it all worth it. “It’s incredible, it’s the root of why I love what I do. It truly is instant gratification, and it’s giving somebody a sense, a physical sense, that connects them to the world. All of a sudden you realize that running water makes noise, and there are things in the environment that make noises that you weren’t aware of. Whispers are audible. It’s very rewarding to be able to give that to a patient instantly and have them hear.” To learn more about Alexander Audiology, visit www.alexanderaudiology.com or call 424.738.3778.

Though Cary Grant and Randolph Scott weren’t out to the world, their relationship was legend around town.

When Cary Grant Carried on in Santa Monica

During Hollywood’s golden age, the iconic star had a bunch of high-profile boyfriends, and one high-profile life partner.

In the 1930s and ‘40s, L.A. was just starting to come into its own as the glamorous capital of film country. The entire city was, at that time, synonymous with Hollywood itself to the rest of the country. The associations Tinsel Town carried with it, however, held their fair share of scandal for a conservative country during wartime. In the new documentary “Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood,” Scotty Bowers, a young man who ran in big Hollywood circles during the Golden Age, saw his fair share of scandalous action among some of the town’s biggest male stars. And during the ‘30s and ‘40s, no one was bigger than Cary Grant, the British star who had come over to America in the 1910s to make a name for himself in entertainment – first on the vaudeville circuit and later in motion pictures. While Grant was the consummate heterosexual lover onscreen, he had a rich personal life offscreen, lived with several Hollywood personalities such as the famous gown designer Orry-Kelly, and the Western and Action star Randolph Scott. Even as early as the 1930s, rumors had begun to circulate about Grant’s relationship with his close friend Scott. When a journalist pointed out how unusually close the two were, a photo shoot was staged to show the two of them palling around in what was most likely their shared Malibu home of 12 years. The two also purportedly shared a house in Santa Monica. “Back in those days, people knew”

After Grant’s death in 1986, Scott passed away mere months afterward. Though Grant never came out, Scotty Bowers has a few tales to tell about the time he got up close and personal with the live-in lovers, one of them ending in a threesome. While some have questioned Bowers on the clarity of his memory (he also admits to hooking up Kate Hepburn with girls) others simply nod their heads, happy to receive the proof they never knew they wanted in the first place.

GIVE IT A WATCH

` ⚫ BY HENRY GIARDINA

Don’t Believe the Hype: “Insatiable” is Unmissable And it’s extremely gay.

In the ongoing war of public opinion, nobody gets off easy. It doesn’t matter if you’re a politician who made a misstep, a beloved pop singer with outdated views, or a TV show that hasn’t even aired yet before getting heaped with criticism. You can blame it on Twitter, you can blame it on internet culture: Whatever you blame for the controversy surrounding “Insatiable,” don’t make the mistake of being swayed by it. A few weeks ago, the internet was all atwitter about a show that commits the grave sin of telling a story about transformation: Once-fat Patty Bladell loses a lot of weight and in the process becomes a sexually viable option for the boys at her high school. So far, not great. But don’t let the body negativity lose you. Underneath a fairly conventional high school revenge fantasy beats the heart of a truly subversive tale. And yes, it’s queer as all hell. If “Insatiable” were all about Patty and her weight loss journey, then yes, a lot of the kneejerk criticism would be justified. But the great thing about this show is that it doesn’t waste

time focusing on one journey, one transformation, one move from fat to thin. It’s a show that keenly observes the transformations set in place by Patty’s behavior. By the end of the first season, her physical change is the least radical transformation we’ve seen. Let’s start with Bob Armstrong, played by the marvelous Dallas Roberts. If you don’t remember him as Angus in “The L Word” (and you should,) you’ll remember him as Alicia Florrick’s gay brother in “The Good Wife.” Here, he’s a newly-disgraced lawyer in Alabama with a much-maligned passion for beauty pageants. His wife, the excellent Alyssa Milano, is a bored housewife who needs to find her own purpose.Their neighbors are the perfect couple they dream of being, until one half of that couple ends up seducing Bob and bringing about a full-scale bisexual awakening. Not only that, but Patty’s best friend Nonnie, a lesbian who can’t understand why her best friend doesn’t just want to hang out with her all the time, is busy going through her coming-out for the better part of the show. Into this hotbed of gayness and fluid sexuality is dropped Patty, a girl with no positive role models, a faulty moral

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) For Aries today, the risk of accidentally committing an act of betrayal is increased. You yourself will not notice how seriously you might damage a person who has helped you a lot in the past. You can avoid this situation if you control every word you say. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) Taurus today is primed for a major success in any endeavor. Hurry to make the most of this favorable moment! Concentrate on your most cherished dream and do everything to make it come true. You only need one thing - to strongly want this unmet goal to become a reality. GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) Today, Geminis will be surprised to find some flaw in themselves. This concerns something insignificant (perhaps a tiny birthmark that does not look aesthetic, a little pimple, wrinkles or freckles). Either way, this flaw will provoke a violent protest, and you decide to get rid of it as soon as possible. CANCER (June 22 - July 22) Cancers will meet this Friday in playful moods. You will want to endlessly attract attention to yourself, and for this reason you are committed to joking and giving promising looks to people of the opposite sex. LEO (July 23 - August 23) Leos today will make an important decision regarding their destiny. You realize that you do not have enough of everything that you want at the moment, and that you are ready to actively fight for a better future. You will even draw up a plan for this life-changing struggle, which you will proceed to implement without the slightest delay. VIRGO (August 24 - September 22) Virgo on August 10th will get full relaxation. Your work day will end sooner than other members of your family, and you will get time to hang out for a couple of hours. When the whole family is assembled, the house members will decide that you should all spend the Friday night at an outing. LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) Libras today will try to finish their current project as soon as possible in order to make their long-awaited weekend a little longer. This time you spend on yourself (more precisely, to create an impeccable appearance). And, your appearance will truly win over an impregnable fortress (your old love). SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) For the Scorpios, the main task of this day will be reconciliation with their best friend. You will understand that you behaved impermissible, deliberately allowing them to be impacted for your own benefit. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21) Sagittarius will be surprised by the events of this day. Everything around you will begin to happen as if by magic. It is necessary only for you to think about something, and it will immediately happen, causing both joy and great amazement in your soul. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Capricorns will spend August 10, 2018, slowly thinking about the fate of their marriage or romance. In general, you will still find your relationship quite happy. AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) Aquarius today is not recommended to trust their personal transportation to an outsider. Having taken note of this forecast, you will protect yourself from very big trouble. In general, this Friday will not give you major problems, and you will spend it in high spirits. PICES (January 21 - February 19) For Pisces, August 10, 2018 will be an unremarkable day, during which all thoughts are only about the weekend, and not about work. Nevertheless, you will perform your work efficiently, so that your weekend will start ahead of schedule.
