ABOUT BUCKHORN
Welcome to Buckhorn, a Trent-Severn Trail Town located in the heart of the Kawarthas. Lock 31, located in the middle of town, is the busiest lock on the TrentSevern Waterway. In 2021, almost 8,000 vessels went through Lock 31, exploring the beauty of the Kawartha Lakes and beyond.

Buckhorn offers small-town charm and friendly people. From the staff at Lock 31 to the stranger you may meet in the street, we take pride in the place we call home. For nature lovers, there are many trails and routes as well as Ontario’s largest park south of Algonquin – Kawartha Highlands Signature Site. A community that gives respect to its past, Buckhorn was once home to many settlers and workers in the sawmill industry. Today, you can still find remnants of the logging throughout our lakes and rivers that brought them here. Rich in arts and culture, the Buckhorn area prides itself in exposing you to an award-winning winery, galleries and unique shops. The Welcome Centre, run by the Buckhorn & District Tourist Association is a short walk from Lock 31 and offers a wealth of information about the area as well as souvenir clothing. Most accommodations in Buckhorn offer lakeside living or are just a short stroll from the waterfront. You can find quaint bed-and-breakfast establishments, resorts with lodge living or rustic cottages. Whether you’re here for a romantic getaway or a family reunion, there’s a place to call your home away from home.

Welcome to Buckhorn!
As Federal Member of Parliament, I want to welcome you all and encourage you to visit the beautiful community of Buckhorn. There is always something new to experience. Enjoy the fresh water of the lakes throughout Buckhorn and area by canoeing, swimming, fishing, and more. Appreciate the natural beauty by experiencing the many trails available in the area for hiking and use through all four seasons. Enjoy year-round arts, culture, and events by visiting our local galleries, landmarks and attending festivals. I have the luxury to work with 337 MPs from coast to coast to coast and I
am always so proud to share my riding of Peterborough Kawartha, because it is well known as one of the most beautiful places in the country. As Shadow Minister of Tourism and a proud resident of Selwyn Ontario, I can assure you have picked a perfect location to explore, enjoy and create memories with yourself, your family and friends. You will see granite everywhere, but beyond that is gorgeous minerals and gems, Buckhorn is a true gem! Take pictures, share your experiences on social media and enjoy the beautiful land and waterways of Buckhorn Ontario! Michelle Ferreri, Member of Parliament Peterborough-Kawartha

You can explore miles of open water in the Buckhorn area. Our lakes and rivers offer some of the best sightseeing in the world. Houseboating There’s nothing better than living on the water for a few days or weeks, enjoying the majestic scenery from the deck of a houseboat. You can cruise the Waterway, grabbing lunch in one community, then enjoying the nightlife of the next. Whether you’re on a solitary holiday, or bringing family and friends, you’ll make memories to last a lifetime. Swimming Throughout the season, one of the busiest spots in the Buckhorn area is Sandy Beach, known for its expanse of soft sand that extends into the lake. Sandy Lake reminds many visitors of a Caribbean oasis of turquoise water. Here in Buckhorn, that’s due to the limestone bottom of the lake. There are no lifeguards, but parking and portable toilets are on hand.
Canoeing and Kayaking The Buckhorn area is prime territory for those who enjoy canoeing and kayaking. Take time out as the sun rises or sets to see birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat or go for a leisurely paddle along the shoreline. Many of our resorts offer watercraft rentals or are included in your holiday package. Diving You might wonder what you’ll see underwater in the area. Not exotic fish, but certainly an appreciation for the history of the area. You can find relics from days gone by below the waterline. Ask at the Welcome Centre for recommendations on sites you shouldn’t miss.

Lock 31, in the heart of Buckhorn, is the busiest lock on the Trent-Severn Waterway. In 2021, even amid the pandemic, almost 8,000 vessels went through Lock 31. Lock 31 has a length of 31.4m (103 ft), is 9.7m (32 ft) wide and has a lift of 3.5m (11.5 ft). To accommodate more overnight guests, power posts are available along the mooring wall. Opened in 1887, the lock connects Upper Buckhorn Lake and Lower Buckhorn Lake, with bridges over the connecting channel. Whether you’re just cruising through, dropping by for some lunch or making it an overnight stop, Lock 31 has convenient access to restaurants and shops. There are also a couple of parks located at or near the locks that you can use for a picnic or bbq lunch.

Outdoor Activity Photo Credit: Gerald Dwyer
The Buckhorn area has been blessed by Mother Nature with natural beauty.
Trent Lakes is a community that has something to offer everyone. Visitors to our area experience unique accommodations, numerous opportunities for sport and fitness and a natural environment that will satisfy any outdoor adventurer. Residents enjoy a very diverse community and newcomers are always welcomed. Medical centres, outdoor sports pads, municipal parks, fishing, snowmobiling, hiking and active community centres are some of the amenities Trent Lakes has to offer. Kawartha Highlands Signature Park is partly situated in Trent Lakes and is the second largest Provincial Park in southern Ontario. Anyone looking to live close to Toronto but light years away from the hustle and bustle of the big city will appreciate life here. Contact the municipal office at 1-800-374-4009 or visit our website at www.trentlakes.ca
From trails for ATV-ing, hiking, biking and snowmobiling to one of the best beaches in the Kawarthas on Sandy Lake, you’ll be able to enjoy the fresh air of the country here. The Kawartha Highlands Signature Site is just a few kilometres north of town and features a 1.5km hiking trail along the Mississauga River. It offers some of the most incredible scenery in the Kawarthas. The interpretive trail tells the story of the River, its history and how it is linked to settlement and the history of the Buckhorn area. If golfing is more your sport, the Buckhorn area has several world-class facilities, designed to take advantage of the natural landscape. Whether you want a leisurely 9-hole course or a more challenging 18-hole experience, you’ll find it here in Buckhorn. Kilometres of groomed snowmobile trails, year-round accommodation and activities for the whole family make being outdoors under Mother Nature’s snowy blanket exhilerating.

Fishing One of the most popular pasttimes in the Buckhorn area is fishing, as our lakes are full of walleye, pickerel, bass and a number of different sunfish. It doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced angler or a novice, a day on the water “wetting your line” is a great way to spend the time. Many of the resorts have boat rentals and there are a number of fishing charters available in the area as well.

President’s Welcome
Located at Lock 31 on the Trent Severn Waterway, you will find a hidden gem in the heart of the Kawarthas called Buckhorn. From our origins back in the 1800s to the forward-thinking community we are today, we are very proud of our historical and cultural heritage. It resonates in our fine arts and culture, scenic attractions and family events. We have all the essentials for a great vacation in our area like tea rooms, restaurants, shops, bakers, catering, marinas, fine art galleries, an awardwinning winery, B&B’s and amazing resorts. Surrounded by lakes, rivers and trails, summer is our busiest time of year. Cottagers come up for their vacation, boaters travel through our lock and anglers come to catch fish from our
fresh waters. Summer isn’t our only attractive season, though. With wellgroomed snowmobile trails, skating on the Buckhorn Sports Pad or on the lake, ice fishing, snow shoeing and much more, winter is a popular season as well. Stop by our Welcome Centre located next to the LCBO, for information on businesses, accommodations, attractions and entertainment. You will be overwhelmed by how much we have to offer. In the meantime, you can check out our website at www.buckhorn.ca to start planning your getaway. Margaret Weikmann, President, Buckhorn District Tourist Association
