A Horsham woman died after falling from an upper floor at the town’s Swan Walk car park.

The incident was reported to police at 5.07pm on Wednesday and the 58-year-old woman was pronounced dead at 5.37pm.

The Sussex Air Ambulance was called from Dunsfold at 5.12pm and landed in Horsham Park. A spokesman said: “Despite advanced interventions from the helicopter crew, the patient died at the scene.”

A spokesman for Sussex Police told The Resident: “We are not treating this as suspicious and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.”

The matter has been referred to the

coroner’s officer and a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out today (Friday).

Police said they believed the woman fell from the fourth floor, but they could not name her or give any more information before The Resident went to press.

Although the cause of death will be determined at an inquest, the incident has brought back memories of

another death at Swan Walk last year.

John Swinden, 71, was found dead in Springfield Road, at the base of the car park, after jumping from the top level on April 3, 2010.

Wife Gillian, 70, was later found dead at their home in Treadcroft Drive, Horsham, having been strangled.

Mrs Swinden had suffered from multiple sclerosis for 30 years. Coroner Penelope Schofield decided Mrs Swinden was unlawfully killed and Mr Swinden took his own life.

FrenchFest, the popular festival celebrating all things Gallic, will return for its sixth year in Horsham this month.

A feast of tasty treats, arts, music and classic French vehicles are among the attractions promised in the town centre from Friday, July 15, to Sunday, July 17.

The centrepiece will be an authentic French market in the Carfax, offering freshly baked breads and patisseries, cheeses and olives, clothes, crafts, charcuterie and freshly cooked nibbles.

Master (comedy) Chef Monsieur Brullee and classic mime comedy from Mime Innit will add extra French flavour, while chanteurs and melodies will add Gallic ambience to your shopping experience.

There will be a double helping of market goods on the Friday and Saturday as the weekly local produce and crafts market returns, relocated to East Street and Market Square.

Regulars to FrenchFest will be pleased to see the return of the Boules (Petanque) in Market Square.

This includes the Business Boules Cup on the Friday lunchtime and evening, organised by the Rotary

Club of Horsham and sponsored by Hobart Paving and Côte Restaurants.

DC Leisure staff from The Pavilions in the Park will offer passers-by a chance to take part in the Tour de Horsham challenge, with prizes to be won.

The 45eme Infanterie Regiment de Ligne – French Napoleonic re-enactors – will drill ‘new recruits’ around the Carfax bandstand on the Saturday and tell exciting stories about their escapades.

Those interested in Horsham’s true historical links with France may like to take the French Connection trail around Horsham Museum and Art Gallery on the Friday and Saturday.

Hands-on art will be on offer in the Carfax on the Sunday – an opportunity to make poppy or sunflowers with a professional artist or to join Horsham Open Studios artists at their Montmartre Day display, creating ancient French cave paintings.

South Down Escargots will coordinate a display of 2CVs vehicles on the Sunday.

Teachers who went on strike yesterday (Thursday) have been criticised by Horsham’s MP. Francis Maude spoke out as more than 150 schools in West Sussex were affected by industrial action.

At least 25 schools in Horsham district – including Millais, Tanbridge House and The Forest School – were closed or partly closed as unions demonstrated against government plans for pensions.

Mr Maude, minister for the Cabinet Office, told BBC Breakfast yesterday: “Talks are still going on. We met on

after months of talks with ministers, the government looks determined to go ahead with its proposals to make us pay more, work longer and get less for our pensions.

“We have to strike a fair balance between the taxpayer and those who are benefiting from the schemes.

“The taxpayer has picked up a bigger and bigger share of the burden.

It’s simply a question of ensuring we have fairness going forward across the board.”

But the West Sussex Teachers’ Association, which has 4,000 members, said teachers were taking action as a “last resort”.

News in Brief Horsham bomb scare Bomb disposal experts detonated an old military shell after staff at Horsham’s tip found it in rubbish.

The Civic Amenity site at Hop Oast was evacuated for about 15 minutes from 10.45am last Thursday as Royal Navy disposal experts removed the device, which may have contained explosives.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “The source of the waste is not known and the shell was kept in a confined area, so there was no danger to the public.

“The disposal team removed the canister to another site, where we understand they safely detonated it.”

Porsche stolen Burglars broke into a house in Marches Road, Kingsfold, stole jewellery worth £1,000 and took a Porsche Boxer parked outside.

A front window was smashed at some time between 10am and 10.45pm last Thursday.

Det Sgt John Hord, of West Sussex CID, said: “The car was fitted with a tracking device and we were able to locate it in London. It is being forensically examined.

“The jewellery has not been recovered and we would like to hear from anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area.”

Rail crime falls Crime on trains and stations in the London South area, including West Sussex, has fallen for a seventh consecutive year.

British Transport Police figures show motor vehicle and cycle offences fell by 4.4 per cent, criminal damage was down by 16 per cent and line of route offences, which include obstructing trains and endangering safety, dropped by 11 per cent.

The figures also show small reductions in violence and robberies, the seventh successive year that the number of robberies has gone down.

Bucking the trend, theft of railway property was up by 7.1 per cent, including 166 cable and metal thefts.

Chief Supt Steve Morgan said: “My officers and staff delivered excellent results, with crime on the network continuing on a downward trend.

“During difficult economic times acquisitive crime is likely to increase and the figures show this.

“Cable theft continues to represent a real challenge for us, the rail industry and other utilities.

“The record price of metals on world markets has made this type of crime seem increasingly attractive, although the actual returns to the thieves are pretty modest.

“Metal theft causes significant disruption to rail services. We have increased the resources we are devoting to this issue.”

Youngsters get fire warning West Sussex Fire and Rescue is reminding parents and guardians not to forget about fire risks.

Child Safety Week, run annually by the Child Accident Prevention Trust, was designed to raise awareness of the main causes of serious childhood accidents and how to prevent them.

House fires are still one of the biggest killers of children in the home, but remembering to take a few simple precautions can make all the difference when it comes to keeping children safe.

Firefighters visited St Robert Southwell Primary School, Horsham, and other schools in the county to talk to children about the dangers and raise awareness of precautions such as smoke alarms and escape plans.

Carol Hart, youth education officer for West Sussex Fire and Rescue, said: “Fire holds a fascination for many children, so it’s important for their parents and guardians to talk with them about the dangers, as well as making sure they know what to do if

a fire breaks out.

“Simple precautions – such as making sure that matches and lighters are kept well out of children’s reach and taking a moment to scan the room for potential hazards – take seconds but can save lives.

“Getting children involved in testing your smoke alarms each week also helps to keep them fire aware, as well as making sure your home and family are protected.”

News in Brief Wagon in the park The Snack Wagon and the youth support team are operating again in Horsham Park on Friday evenings until the end of August.

The team consists of volunteer youth workers, fully trained and checked by the Criminal Records Bureau, who provide advice and information to young people about education, drugs, health and other subjects.

A range of activities are available at the Snack Wagon, such as real ‘beer goggles’, which help young people consider the effect of alcohol on their co-ordination and safety.

Young people receive free toasties, confectionary and bottles of water.

Air Ambulance boost Southern Water has donated almost £5,000 to Sussex Air Ambulance.

John Corden, of Southern Water, said: “We have never used the air ambulance and we hope we never have to, but it’s nice to know that the helicopters are there if our staff or any of their family or friends ever need them.”

Air Ambulance fundraiser Cheryl Johnson said: “Southern Water have been great supporters of us and we are extremely grateful to them.”

£3k for groups Three community groups in North Horsham have received a £3,100 boost.

Jailed pensioner had been taken off the sex register Warnham man, 77, made indecent images of children – and second man, 39, is also jailed A 77-year-old man has been sentenced to a year in jail for making indecent images of children.

Donald Smallwood, of Wyvern Place, Warnham, admitted nine offences at an earlier hearing and was sentenced when he appeared at Lewes Crown Court.

Two charges of possessing extreme pornographic images will remain on file.

Smallwood was a registered sex offender until 2007, having committed a similar offence relating to the possession of indecent images of children in 2000.

Det Insp Ali Eaton said: “For every indecent image of a child online there is a victim.

“In downloading these images, including at the highest level of indecency, Smallwood has actively played a part in perpetuating the abuse and exploitation of children.

“The internet is not a space of anonymity. If you choose to download a child abuse image, it could be traced back to you by police, as it was with Smallwood.”

Smallwood was also made the subject of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) for an indefinite period and will be on the sex offenders register for 10 months.

A destruction order was given in relation to the laptop and related storage media.

The charges follow an investigation by officers from the Sussex Police Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT).

The offences do not involve any allegations of actual contact, either in person or online, between Smallwood and any children.

The indecent image offences are contrary to the Protection of Children Act 1978, and the pornography offences are contrary to the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008.

In a separate case this week, a Bramber man was sentenced to a year in jail for internet indecent image offences.

Steven Anthony Povey, 39, admitted 12 offences relating to the making

of indecent images of children and four possession offences related to extreme pornography.

POLIT found that Povey made indecent images of children ranging across varying levels of seriousness.

At the time of the offences he was living at South Ash, Steyning, but he lived at Downland Park, The Street, Bramber, until his imprisonment.

Povey also received a lifetime SOPO and will be on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Again, the offences do not involve any allegations of actual contact, either in person or online.

Only sex offenders sentenced to 30 months or more are automatically placed on the register for life.

Sussex Police declined to comment on whether the law should be changed so that anyone on the register should never be taken off it.

Under changes proposed by the government, sex offenders required to register for life could only be considered for removal from the register 15 years after their release.

James Brokenshire, minister for crime and security said: “Protecting the public is our number one priority and tough checks and a range of tools are already in place to manage known sex offenders.

“We recognise we can build on this, which is why we are seeking views on extending and strengthening the notification requirements.”

Assistant Chief Constable Michelle Skeer, of the Association of Chief Police Officers, said: “Legislation under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 and the multi-agency public protection arrangements provide some of the most effective tools in the world to manage registered sex offenders.

“We have worked closely with the Home Office and other partners to develop a robust review process that ensures a full assessment of the risks posed before an offender is removed from the notification requirements.

“The risks posed by some offenders can never be completely eliminated, but we will continue to do all in our power to keep them to a minimum.”

News in Brief Motorcyclist dies Motorcyclist Antonio D’Alessio, 46, has died after a crash near Cowfold.

His Ducati 738 was involved in a collision with a Ford Transit van at the A272 junction with Kent Street at 9.35pm last Wednesday, June 22.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said Mr D’Alessio, of Gatehouse Lane, Burgess Hill, died shortly after his bike hit a signpost.

A 49-year old man from Haywards Heath man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was released on police bail until September 18.

Sgt Stewart Goodwin said: “We would like to hear from anyone who was on the A272 near Cowfold at that time and who saw anything that might help our enquiry.”

Power to Southwater Southwater Village Hall has become a small power station.

The village hall committee has been working for four years on making the hall more energy efficient and cutting the building’s carbon footprint.

As part of this work, 14 solar PV panels have been fitted to the building, making it the first community building in the village to be part-powered by the sun.

The committee hopes pre-school children who use the village hall will be able to learn that electricity can be made from sunlight.

MPs unite against circus animals A Horsham-based charity is celebrating a major victory in its fight against traditional circuses.

The Born Free Foundation said it was delighted by the decision of MPs to support a ban on wild animals in circuses, a suggestion which was approved even without a formal vote.

MPs displayed what the foundation described as “an astonishing show of unity” in defiance of the government’s proposal to introduce a licensing and regulation system instead.

The work of the Born Free Foundation was highlighted several times in the debate.

Virginia McKenna, the foundation’s co-founder and trustee, said she was overwhelmed by the “heart-stopping” togetherness of MPs in wanting to end the “archaic” practice of keeping wild animals in circuses.

She said: “Everyone saw past the glitter of the Big Top. I warmly thank all the MPs who, by their real understanding of the issue, have spoken up on behalf of the animals, the public and all of us who have campaigned on this matter for years.”

A motion in support of a ban, tabled by Mark Pritchard (Conservative), Jim Fitzpatrick (Labour) and Bob Russell (Liberal Democrat), was initially opposed by the government.

But during the debate a free vote was announced, allowing MPs to vote

independently rather than following party positions.

Several MPs expressed their amazement at the apparent direct involvement of 10 Downing Street in trying to prevent or amend the motion under debate.

Mr Pritchard told the House of Commons: “I was offered incentive and reward on Monday, and then it was ratcheted, until last night, when I was threatened.

“I had a call from the Prime Minister’s office directly. I was told that the Prime Minister himself had said that unless I withdrew this motion, he would look upon it very dimly indeed.”

Chris Draper, Born Free’s senior scientific researcher, told The Resident: “I am astounded and delighted by the strength of feeling among MPs on this issue.

“Something that came through very strongly is that MPs took notice of the letters and emails received from their constituents. The public and Parliament have now spoken – let’s hope the government are listening.”

The decision by MPs is not binding on the government, but minister James Paice indicated it would consider its position in the light of the debate.

News in Brief Penk’s paddle power An outdoor activity instructor for Southwater Watersports will paddle 700 miles in a canoe.

David Penk said: “Last year I decided I would undertake a canoe journey in support of a charity. As a friend of the family is in the Army and is due to head to Afghanistan this year, we decided to fundraise in support of Help for Heroes.

“On July 9 I will be starting a 700mile canoe trip which should take about six weeks. On average I need to paddle 20 miles a day, with Sundays off for a break and to re-stock supplies.

“My wife will be joining me for a week and I already have support from canoe clubs along the way if required.

“One of the biggest obstacles will be the locks, which I am not allowed to enter with a canoe. Each one will have to be portaged. On the Huddersfield narrow canal alone, on a six-mile section there are 42 locks.”

Sandwich challenge Have you got what it takes to eat a 3fthigh sandwich, with six fillings, in less than half an hour?

That’s the challenge set by Le Brunch, Swan Walk, in a July 31 event to raise money for a new Thinking Garden at Holbrook Primary School.

Year 4 pupils came up with the idea of the garden as a tribute to Abigail Hargreaves, who died of cancer aged eight, and as a quiet place for other people to reflect.

Peter Erotokritos, co-owner of Le Brunch, is asking people to pay £20 for a giant sandwich and a milkshake.

Anyone who finishes inside 30 minutes of the 2.30pm start will be added to a roll of honour board in the shop.

A horse-riding theme at the planned garden includes horseshoeshaped flower beds, a horse trough wildlife pond, fences that look like showjumping poles and a horse woven out of willow, made with the help of boys at The Forest School.

Some of the flowers planted will be in Abigail’s favourite colours of purple and turquoise.

The plans also include paving, gates, steps, seats, bird feeders and boxes, wind chimes and a covered blackboard on which children can write their reflections.

Francis Maude’s predictable attack on the public sector workers who are striking over pensions.

The government proposals mean they will have to work longer, pay more and get less pension. This is what the affluent Mr Maude regards as “fair and sustainable”.

I think it would be an education for him to try to live on the public sector pensions he is proposing to cut.

The government is not negotiating in good faith. They have already broken the long-standing agreement on pensions being linked to inflation.

They have substituted the Consumer Prices Index for the Retail Prices Index. Thus they have cut public sector pensions by sleight of hand and without negotiation.

The government seem determined to make pensioners pay the price for the economic mess.

They expect people to believe that the crisis was not caused by the irresponsible speculation of millionaire bankers but because this country is too generous to pensioners.

Personally I find that difficult to believe.

An open letter It’s never easy to say “I’ve let people down”, but this is just what I am doing.

How about doing a report on why the nation – of people under 65 – feel disgusted by pensioners?

I live in a neighbourhood where the majority of the people are of retirement age and whenever I walk down the road I am met with glares or curtains twitching.

I give a smile and have a nose turned up at me. And they have the cheek to call youngsters rude!

I am sorry but I honestly believe the older you get the more arrogant you get.

When my sister was a baby, my dad was on the train with her. She was crying away as babies usually do.

An old man turned round to my dad and said: “Will you shut that child up?

Children should be seen not heard! I didn’t fight in the war for children to turn out like this” – and all that.

Yes, there are plenty of teenagers who give the rest of them a bad name, but the same goes for the older generation.

I work in a shop in town. The younger the customers are, the more friendly they are. The older ones just throw their money at you then walk off.

I think it’s because they are so stuck in their ways, they are very reluctant to change.

I don’t know what it is about older people, but they are just so bitter towards the younger generation. Yes, we all have iPods and mobile phones, not hoops and sticks. Times have changed – get over it!

I will give you my list of top 10 reasons that over-65s are disliked and I’m pretty sure most people will agree with me.

1 Arrogance.

2 Rudeness.

3 Lack of respect for the younger generation.

4 Neighbourhood gossip.

5 Pushing in front of younger people in queues.

6 Constant complaining about everything.

7 Driving at 20mph EVERYWHERE. 8 In fact, just driving. They are more of a danger than boy racers. They need to retake their tests.

9 Pushing past people and barging others out the way. No matter where you are, it always happens.

10 Giving you a glare as soon as you step on the bus TO PAY and then having the cheek to take a seat, because every seat has a reservation for old people.

I could go on and on, but unlike pensioners I haven’t reached my age of retirement. Therefore I haven’t got the whole day to write to you or to complain about the youth of today.

Yes, to some extent I agree that young people are rude and swear too much, but that’s today’s society. To put it bluntly, get on with it, we can’t change it.

County council’s horrors I think people should be aware of what is happening to the elderly and vulnerable people of this county in the name of cuts.

Many elderly people such as my mother, who are completely disabled and cannot move independently, have had their budgets cut by 33 to 43 per cent and have had their vital day care withdrawn.

Even worse than this, those already attending day care centres and who are funding the place themselves are being told to leave the centre as places will only be provided for people who are funded.

So not only are people who currently have funded day care having it withdrawn, those who are paying are being thrown out of day care as well.

As West Sussex County Council have closed three day care centres, this means there are no day care places left anywhere for these people.

They have no advocacy service to fight for them and the appeals process is pitiful at best, so they have been left high and dry.

Their funding has been cut so much they cannot pay for the extra care to cover the day care deficit.

With nowhere to go to be looked after, the result is that severely disabled elderly people risk being left in their homes alone and totally defenceless and vulnerable.

In addition some people classified as substantial care needs, which the council said would be funded, have had their day care cut while others in exactly the same situation have not.

The situation is cruel and inhumane and could be said to contravene the Human Rights and Equalities Act. This council said people would not suffer unduly from these cuts, but this is plainly not the case. The suffering is extremely great and the old and frail have been left as the scapegoats.

The consultation did not make it clear that people with substantial needs would be affected in this way and therefore could be said to have been conducted inadequately.

It may be that there is a case for judicial review if these people can find someone to speak for them in the legal arena.

Someone needs to stand up for these people.

I hope you will publish this letter so that the community becomes aware of the horrors being exacted by this county council.

Fun in the sun at Colgate Fete Temperatures soared towards 30°C as more than 500 visitors enjoyed the Colgate Village Summer Fete on Sunday.

The fete was formally opened by Vic Marley, chairman of Crawley Town Football Club, who donated executive suite tickets which raised a handsome sum towards village hall funds.

A home-made dragon won a fancydress competition for under-10s and face painting was provided by Busy Days of Horsham. A magician, bouncy castle and pony rides were other attractions for the children.

The ponies were treated to regular drinks and wash downs, but they were not the only ones who needed drinks in the heat.

Stalls included bowling, a coconut shy, the treasure map, a lucky dip, money darts, tombola, hook a duck, a balloon race, the money jar and a raffle.

Children from Colgate Primary School gave an excellent display of country dancing and music was provided by The Jazz Music Trio.

Fete spokesman Dave Elder said: “In the 100 years or more that the fete has been held, this year was without a doubt the most successful ever. A fantastic sum of over £3,000 was raised for the village hall maintenance fund.

Graduates go it alone A creative pair who couldn’t get work with companies after finishing university have found a solution – to start their own James Hood Business Editor

Two graduates have set up their own business after struggling to find employment when they left university.

Marcus Wehrle, who has a degree in creative advertising, and Felicity Wigmore, who studied graphic design, are Slinfold residents and both attended the University of Gloucester.

Following their graduation last Summer, both Marcus and Felicity found it difficult to get responses to applications or interviews, due to a

rise in unemployment and the competition for jobs.

After six months and no offers from any companies the pair found a solution – to start their own. Soon after, Owl & Pussycat was founded. The business is a design consultancy that offers affordable creative services for small and start-up businesses that might not be able to afford the fees that most professional design agencies charge.

Felicity said: “We identified a niche in the market. We knew that for a small business to survive in the current economic climate, a strong brand identity that runs through everything they do is essential.

“By offering our services at an affordable rate, we are able to help small businesses and start-ups with design solutions usually reserved for established companies with larger budgets.”

The couple noticed that other people in their situation, as well as those who had been made redundant as a result of the recession, were attempting to set up their own businesses.

This created a market for affordable design that could help those companies to get established.

Marcus and Felicity set up a website and used social media, free advertising and their network of family and friends to spread the word about their venture. They now have a number of clients in the local area.

Charity to benefit from Sainsbury’s support

Guide Dogs for the Blind has been chosen as Sainsbury’s new local charity partner for 2011/2012.

Back in May, the store in Horsham invited its customers to nominate a local charity they wanted to support.

Now the charity will benefit from a

year’s worth of fundraising and volunteering by the supermarket.

Guide Dogs for the Blind works to deliver the guide dog service and other mobility services, as well as breaking down barriers – both physical and legal – to enable blind and partially sighted people to get around on their own.

It was chosen as the store’s charity after nominations poured in from customers keen to support a local good cause.

Phillipa Jan, District Fundraiser of The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, said: “We’re really excited to be partnering with Sainsbury’s

Horsham over the next 12 months and would like to thank everyone in the community who voted for us. We will be planning fundraising activities with the store colleagues in the coming weeks and we hope that customers will support the store’s fundraising efforts in the coming months”.

Ian Maxey, Sainsbury’s Horsham store manager, added: “Guide Dogs for the Blind is such a worthy local cause and we’re pleased and proud to be supporting it over the next 12 months. Tea party marks 100 years of Wakefields A heartfelt happy birthday as the jewellers says thank you to the public by sharing tea, cake and ‘fond memories’

Staff members, customers, the public and the sun all came out to celebrate Wakefields Jewellers’ 100th anniversary recently.

Owners of the shop Melanie and Dominic Wakefield organised the Vintage Tea Party, which was held on West Street, to mark the occasion.

Those who joined the celebrations enjoyed complimentary tea, pink lemonade, cake and a jazz band.

Melanie said: “It has been a really lovely day. The turnout has been fantastic, and so has the atmosphere. It feels like a real celebration, which was just how we hoped it would be.

It is our thank you to our customers and the town for helping us reach 100 years of Wakefields.”

Sue Smith from Horsham was one of the hundreds of guests who attended the party, which took place between 11am and 3pm.

She said: “I chose my engagement ring at Wakefields, so I have some really fond memories of the jewellery shop. And I think lots of people here feel that way too.

“It’s a really wonderful way to celebrate. It’s such a great idea and it’s nice that they have involved people of the town.”

The event was co-ordinated by Maryanne Petryszyn, owner of Jam and Tea, a professional catering and event styling business. Maryanne said: “This really is a special occasion.

100 years is a massive achievement and Wakefields means a lot to so many people. I am really happy to be a part of it and to help them celebrate in style. It’s been a big success.”

Angela Russo, from Horsham, added: “We found out about the party on Wakefields’ Facebook page and decided to come down and see what was going on. And it has been absolutely wonderful. A really nice thing to do, with fab tea and cake too!”

Continuing the birthday celebrations, Wakefields Jewellers is running a ‘crack the safe’ competition until this Sunday, July 3.

Anyone who makes a purchase will be given a six-digit code that could unlock a £25,000 diamond ring. Melanie said: “I desperately want someone to win it!”

Colleagues walk all Graylands unveils business night over the Downs park with opening event

Four employees at Saxon Weald, the Horsham-based housing association, are embarking on a 40mile walk over the South Downs to raise money for charity.

Marie Riordan, Keith MacDonald, Mark Ansell and Lee Wiginton will walk through the night from Devil’s Dyke to Eastbourne, all in aid of Action Medical Research, a children’s charity dedicated to improving the health of babies and children in the UK. Team leader, Mark Ansell, commented: “We are all very excited to take on this challenge in aid of Action Medical Research. Having a young

child myself I know how distressing it can be when they get ill. It’s great to be able to help the charity continue to make significant medical breakthroughs, while giving myself a challenge too.”

For almost 60 years Action Medical Research has been behind numerous breakthroughs such as the UK polio vaccine, ultrasound scanning in pregnancy, and more recently the foetal heart rate monitor, a state-ofthe-art device that could help save thousands of at-risk babies.

The business community celebrated the launch of Graylands Estate last week, with an open day of networking, seminars and lunch.

Graylands Estate is being developed by Verve Properties. The site forms a new, unique business campus on Langhurstwood Road, which offers spaces for local companies to rent. Many of the buildings on the site have been restored or renovated and make the most of some of their individual rooms and features.

Local business people were invited to the event, where they had the opportunity to tour some of the buildings as well as chat with stallholders who were offering advice and services.

Caroline Doggart, from Verve Properties, said: “It’s been a really great event. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves and chatting. It has been the perfect way to say ‘hello, we’re here’ to the area, and people seem to really like the development.

“It has been so successful we are thinking of planning more events in future.”

A budding radio presenter from Tanbridge House School got the chance to spend a day being shown how it’s done recently.

Harry Close, from Horsham, joined a team of professional broadcasters at Heart FM Sussex, as part of his school’s ‘Ambassador’ programme.

Harry was given a guided tour of the Brighton-based studios by Gary Hornbuckle, chief engineer at the radio station, and had the opportunity to see the soundproof studios and broadcasting rooms.

Tim Humphrey, news presenter for Heart, showed Harry how the news programme is written and broadcast

throughout the network. That included explaining the importance of the bulletin’s timings and length, to ensure it fits into the rest of the station’s tight schedules.

Harry said: “This has been a fantastic afternoon and I have really enjoyed my ambassador experience.

Gary, Tim and Tony were cool and gave me great advice on how to be a radio presenter.

“Tony suggested that I look into volunteering for hospital radio so I will be looking into that.

“Thank you to everyone at Heart FM and my school for making this an awesome learning experience.”

Harry also spent time with the station’s well-known Drivetime presenter Tony Shepherd and received valuable advice on how to get his dream job before he left.

Petra and the Fishslaps, the Horsham-based band that made their debut at the Lower Beeding Fete last month, has recently played three gigs in the area.

The five-piece group of friends was asked to play at the Holbrook Fete following the success of their first performance, and are going from strength to strength.

Lead singer Rachael Pratt said: “We’re all so much more confident already. We’re comfortable talking with the crowd and got a lot of positive feedback. We are really enjoying ourselves and I personally feel ready for any gig now.”

For their set at the fete, the band performed a range of songs to suit both the younger and older audience members. Numbers included The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars, Baby by Justin

Bieber as well as the Kings of Leon’s Use Somebody.

Apart from being talented, Rachael commented it is the band’s friendship that has helped them to be successful so far. She said: “We have a special relationship. It works because we have trust as well as musical abilities and the type of friendship where you’re not afraid to say ‘no, that doesn’t work’. We want the band to sound as best as we can make it for our audience. We know we’re going to get there. Now that we’ve all finished our exams, there is no stopping us”.

Sunday showcase for original music

The Conspiracy

This Sunday, 3 July, sees the return of Stan’s Sunday Showcase at The Anchor Hotel, in Horsham.

This will be the fourth of the Sunday shows to be organised by local music lover, musician and recording artist, Jamie ‘Stan’ Stanley (aka: MAILMAN).

Stan said: “The purpose of these nights is to provide a platform for local bands and musicians who write their own material.

“Cover songs are allowed but the emphasis is always on originals. It’s gonna be big!”

This Sunday will include

performances by local rock bands Intermission, Singfield, Tell Wolves Tales and The Conspiracy.

There will also be early evening guest slots from various local open mic legends, as well as the regular

Harry’s final spell on the silver screen The end is coming for the wizard and his friends, in an epic finale of the worldwide phenomenon It’s almost time to say goodbye to one of the world’s favourite and most famous wizards.

The final installment of Harry Potter’s adventures on screen is released around the world, and at The Capitol, on July 15 and is one of the most eagerly anticipated finales in Hollywood’s history.

J K Rowling’s series of novels have been captivating movie-goers and fueling the imaginations of both children and grown-ups alike around the world for almost a decade.

Now, it’s time to say goodbye in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. And it promises to be an epic climax full of the drama, action and excitement that fans have loved from day one.

The film’s lead star, Daniel Radcliffe told Reuters: “The last movie is going to be really, really fast-paced and have a load of action in it and it is like a war film.”

In this chapter, it’s war as good battles evil. The stakes are high and no one is safe, least of all Harry’s friends Ron and Hermione. With the imminent showdown between the

wizard and Lord Voldemort, it could be Harry who has to make the ultimate sacrifice.

In addition to Radcliffe, an all-star cast includes Emma Watson, Rupert Grant, Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Brendan Gleeson, Rhys Ifans and Bill Nighy.

Fans of Daniel Radcliffe can see him moving away from sci fi, but sticking to action movies in World War 1 flick, All’s Quiet on the Western Front. It is a remake of the 1930 award-winning

film, in which Radcliffe will take the lead role. He is also to star in The Woman in Black, which is expected to be released in 2012.

Emma Watson, who plays Hermione, will undoubtedly continue as the ambassador of British fashion brand, Burberry, and gracing the cover of Vogue for years to come. But the star has proven she is more than just a pretty face, attending Brown University in America.

She has reportedly been reading and considering scripts, which will no doubt propel her further into Hollywood’s hall of fame. And has

confirmed she will star in forthcoming flick The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, based on Stephen Chbosky’s coming-of-age novel centering on the trials and tribulations of a 15-yearold outsider. Emma will play the role of Samantha.

It’s a move into comedy for Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley. He will star in Eddie the Eagle, the story of England’s first contender for an Olympic ski jumping title.

Whatever avenues they decide to take in future, the three stars have won a place in movie fan’s hearts for years to come. Watch this space.

Also on the big screen Transformers: Dark of the Moon 3D Shia LaBeouf reprises his role in the movie series and is joined by newcomer Rosie Hungtington-Whiteley. When a mysterious event from Earth’s past erupts into the present day it threatens to bring a war to Earth so big that the Transformers alone will not be able to save us. Directed by Michael Bay.

Bad Teacher Cameron Diaz is reunited with Justin Timberlake for this movie, in which a teacher can’t wait to meet her meal ticket, to escape her mundane day job. Her foul mouth and disregard for her students makes for hilarious viewing. Make sure you check out our review in The Resident next week.

Last week as we were lashed by wind and rain, the idea of a beach holiday held many attractions – if only so I could reveal tanned limbs that did not resemble a badly creosoted fence. Self-tan was never my forte!

Yet as I write today with the sun shining, the prospect of staying in England for a vacation holds a great deal of appeal. I may consider the option of the staycation, which is rapidly gaining in popularity during difficult economic times.

The idea is simply that you book some time off and instead of jetting off to the teeming holiday hotspots, stay in your local area, discover its attractions and treat yourself to some quality time.

this, so I will change my routine and clothes to suit my staycation.

The long days mean that evening can be a time for walks, barbecues and cycle rides instead of TV and although I will not be sassying down West Street in my beach regalia (you will be relieved to hear) I am going to adopt less formal dress and dig out the flip flops, sarong and straw hat.

At this point I need to make a serious point.

Gentlemen, feel free to dress down in shorts. But can I make a plea on behalf of all us ladies, to those of you who really believe you look attractive by whipping your t-shirt off and walking around sporting a white beer belly and the odd tattoo.

Put your shirts back on!

Phew, glad to get that out of my system. Back to the Staycation. I am intending to read all those books and watch all those DVDs I never have time to do.

But you really have to be very disciplined to have a good staycation – no slipping back into sorting out the kitchen cupboards or cleaning.

Relaxation is the aim. You deserve it and you know it makes sense.

A walk in the glorious countryside can lift and renew your spirit, and you don’t need to go far to discover delights on your doorstep. The lush Sussex countryside is beckoning us and it holds many treasures with its rivers and woods.

You cannot have the perfect staycation without some serious pampering and I recommend you book yourself a facial or body treatment at a salon and spa.

Let’s be honest - no-one likes to eat their greens without a yummy dressing so it’s time to take a look at how to make some delicious dressings.

Firstly, you need to know that store bought dressing are generally full of junk. Even if they say they are low calorie, they will be full of chemicals and just not good for you. Conversely, it’s really easy and quick to just make your own!

You can also use these dressings to flavour other food such as your chicken or rice or whatever you are eating!

Once you have the basic ingredients in your kitchen, you can get really creative, mix and match and begin to enjoy your salads!

I would suggest you purchase some small tupperware containers that you can keep in your fridge filled with different salad dressings so you always have them on hand. This, in turn, will help you to make better food choices!

Salad Dressing Bases: Your base will be either ¼ cup of vinegar or citrus juice such as lemon or lime juice. You can also use other fruit juices if you want a sweeter flavour or want to use it for a dessert over fruits.

Vinegars: There are a huge variety of vinegars available now such as: • Rice vinegar (makes a great Asian dressing) • Apple cider vinegar, • Balsamic vinegar • White balsamic vinegar • Flavoured vinegar (pear infused, orange, champagne etc)

Oils: You will want around 1 – 2 tblsps of oil. Again there are lots of delicious oils now available for you to experiment with but I would particularly recommend the following three: • Olive oil (always good as it has a neutral flavour) • Toasted Sesame Seed oil is full of

flavour but you really don’t need a lot.

• Flaxseed Oil Sweet/Sour Flavouring: • Soya sauce (literally only a splash) • Honey (raw, organic if possible) • Maple Syrup (100% natural/organic maple – no chemicals) • Fruit jams or jellies • Regular fruit mushed up

Creamy Dressings: You can use up to ¼ cup of these ingredients to make a really creamy dressing: • Greek yoghurt (fat free or 2%) • Cottage cheese • Cream cheese (fat free) • Tofu (This adds protein and is a great base for a creamy dressing) Thicker Dressings: • Egg whites (with a little liquid) • Corn starch to thicken

Herbs and Spices: • I would recommend freeze dried herbs and spices as they taste fresher • Onions: shallots – taste better • Various mustards such as wholegrain Here are several of my favourite dressings that are in my fridge all the time: Honey-Lime Dressing (also good over fruit) • ¼ cup lime juice • 1 - 2 tbsp olive oil • Honey (organic and raw if pos) • Paprika • Cinnamon or All Spice Fruit Dressing • ¼ cup balsamic vinegar • Tbsp olive oil • Wholegrain mustard • Fruit juice or your liking

My commute to work every day is pretty stressful.

I have never been one to argue with complete strangers but I’m convinced that an hour long train ride to London that is constantly subject to delays and always heaving with more passengers than the tube is enough to boil anyone’s blood.

I knew it was time to do something about my stress levels, though, when I almost burst a blood vessel trying not to yell at a woman sitting next to me on the train who had the audacity to eat a packet of smelly cheese and onion crisps at 8 o’clock in the morning.

After seeing an advert for Hypnotherapy For All Ages in this very paper, and hearing that hypnotherapy works wonders for calming a troubled mind, I booked an appointment with Karen Jones for a deep relaxation session.

Karen’s clients visit her for a variety of reasons. She certainly had her work cut out when this client walked through the door though, as not only was I running late due to a delayed train and therefore suffering from my nightly dose of commuter rage, but I had also got it into my head that the session

No, not just a headless chicken as is often the case, but an actual chicken.

From as far back as I can remember I have been convinced that hypnotherapists make people say and do silly things whilst in a deep sleep, purely for their own entertainment.

Where the specific chicken fear came from I have no idea – maybe someone was made to flap around on a Paul McKenna type programme I watched as a child – but the fear was strong enough to have me in a cold sweat on arrival at the clinic.

After I had explained this to Karen in our preliminary chat, though, she was very understanding and put me completely at ease by explaining that even in a deep state of relaxation your subconscious won’t allow you to do anything that you don’t want to do.

So with anti-fowl play firmly in mind and a detailed discussion about my history and my stressful commutes behind us, I was ready to be hypnotised.

I thought I would feel self conscious and laugh half way through my session but in actual fact it was really easy for me to completely forget where I was and just concentrate on Karen’s soothing voice telling me to visualise images ranging from flickering candles to deserted beaches.

After a thirty minute relaxation session I felt like I had just woken up from a very deep sleep and had undergone a full body massage – definitely something I would try again and would strongly recommend to

Remember the person during dementia awareness week ‘Remember the Person’ is the theme of this year’s Dementia Awareness Week which runs from July 3-9.

In West Sussex one in five people in the county will have a form of dementia during their lifetime. More than 13,000 people are currently living with dementia in West Sussex.

Dementia is not a specific disease and can be caused by a number of different conditions including Alzheimer’s disease.

People with dementia can have a number of difficulties including problems with their short term memory.

The idea of ‘Remember the Person’ is to try to encourage people to be a friend to someone with dementia. It is also trying to take the fear out of dementia.

Two thirds of people with dementia live at home. Often they are cared for by family members who also need help and support.

There is a lot that can be done by friends and neighbours. Just staying in touch and treating a person with respect and dignity can help. It is also important to be a good listener and communicator.

In West Sussex the pioneering

HOPE group (a group of people living with dementia) has helped both professionals and the public gain a greater understanding of the needs of people with dementia and their carers.

The group is funded by West Sussex County Council to help develop the learning and training of social care staff and students in the county.

David Moore, Training and Development Officer for Adults’ Services at West Sussex County Council, helps run the group.

He said: “HOPE gives people living with dementia the chance to give

Peter Catchpole, County Council Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services, said: “By working closely with people and their families who have direct experience of the disease we are developing a better understanding of their needs.”

Earlier this year two West Sussex men with differing forms of dementia

shared their thoughts and feelings in a video produced by the County Council.

They agreed to be interviewed, to shatter the myth that those with the disease are incapable of thinking for themselves.

Should I choose a large chain or a smaller independent estate agent to sell my house in Horsham?

You should choose the best estate agent in the village or town wherever you live.

The best way to determine this is to ask neighbours who are selling about their experiences, check local agents websites for feedback comments and visit their offices to find out what sort of reception you get because this is how your potential buyers will be treated.

Large estate agent chains may tell you they have access to more buyers than smaller companies; which is undoubtedly true.

What they fail to mention is that the vast majority will be registered with their offices in other towns and villages.

It is of absolutely no interest to you if an agent has 200 buyers on their books looking to buy in Hampshire, Wales, or London. Buyers looking in Horsham will contact estate agents in Horsham, not Haslemere!

Also, with the huge rise in internet use many buyers simply keep an eye on the property websites and contact the agent marketing your house once it appears online so the online presentation and pro-activity in responding to enquiries is actually far more important.

How can I improve my chances of having a good income when I retire?

I am buying a house with a mortgage, and everything has been going smoothly - until now. My solicitor tells me that the house I am buying is in a parish where there may be a liability to “contribute to any repairs of the chancel of the local church”. He asked the seller to pay for insurance against any future demands for money because of this, but the seller has refused.

The solicitor says my lender will demand that I get this insurance and that it will cost at least £100. I am not very happy. What has this church got to do with me, and why should I pay anything?

A

The law that covers chancel repair liability emanates from the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century and imposed personal liability for the upkeep of the chancels of parish churches. The church where you are buying must have been in existence at that time.

In many cases, however, the liability was commuted to tithes, which have since been redeemed or abolished, and many such parishes are no longer affected. In a recent case the courts confirmed that this law is still in force.

It is possible to carry out a search of the relevant records at the Record Office at Kew, but this can take months. The insurance you mention should cover you (and future owners) should the Parochial Church Council request any contributions.

If your solicitor is acting for your lender, as well as for you, he is required by them to carry out all usual and prudent searches and to ensure that insurance is in place to cover potential risks. Celebrating the past, present and future: Jaguar takes the lead at Goodwood Olli Nott Motors Reporter

Being the featured marque at Goodwood’s famous display in front of the house is always an honour, and this year, Jaguar have been given the opportunity to showcase what I believe to be their most groundbreaking model, the E-Type.

The 50th anniversary of the launch of the E-type is set to be celebrated in style with cars from the past present and a little way into the future as Jaguar is honoured as featured marque at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Capturing the attention of the crowds expected to number in excess of 175,000 over the three days (July 1-3) of the Festival will be a dramatic Jaguar-themed sculpture erected on the lawn in front of Goodwood House.

Measuring 28-metres in height and weighing 150-tonnes, the sculpture, designed by Gerry Judah, promises to be a striking centrepiece for the celebrations.

The main focus of the event will be the action on the notorious Goodwood Hill.

The high speed 1.16-mile run will

feature key Jaguars from the past, including an E-type Group 44 racer, a D-type, an XK140 and the iconic XJ13 racer.

The event will also celebrate significant current and future Jaguars.

The XKR-S, the fastest Jaguar in a generation, capable of accelerating to 100 mph in a little over 8-seconds will take to the hill with Mike Cross at the wheel.

Joining it will be the new XFR making its UK public debut – the same 510 PS model having won the ‘Most Spirited Getaway’ at the Festival of Speed press day earlier in the year.

Likely to cause a stir will be the beautiful C-X75 concept car which will be on display on the Jaguar stand.

Serving as inspiration for a future, highly innovative road-going version being developed at the moment by Jaguar and Williams F1, the C-X75 embodies the key attributes of advanced, forward-looking design, innovation and engineering that made the E-type a world-beating sports car.

This year’s Goodwood is set to be the most impressive yet, so it’s definitely not something you want to miss.

Nissan’s Goodwood record breakers Nissan has set its sights on claiming two records at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 1-3 July – and it will be the LEAF and Juke that set them, rather than the flagship GT-R. The Nissan LEAF, 2011 Car of the Year, will attempt to become the fastest car ever to be driven up the famous hill climb course – backwards.

Unlike petrol-powered cars, in which reverse gear allows only low speeds, the LEAF has an electric powertrain that, theoretically, enables it to be driven backwards as fast as it can go forwards. This means the car has a potential reverse top speed of 90mph. I await the results!

Nissan will also makes its first attempt at a two-wheeled record up the Goodwood Hill, with the Juke aiming to become the fastest four-wheeled machine to climb the entire course using just two wheels.

Professional stunt driver, Terry Grant, will be the man attempting to set the records in the LEAF and Juke by performing the stunts once every day he said: “I’ve experienced Goodwood before but never attempted to set a new record. To have the chance to grab not only one but two records at the same event will hopefully provide everyone with a very entertaining spectacle.”

The Nissan LEAF NISMO RC – the “Racing Competition” version of the electric car will make its UK dynamic debut.

The car is a purpose-built prototype that wraps production LEAF components and technology in a carbon fibre body and has been designed to show that electric cars can be fast and exciting. Like the production Nissan LEAF, a lithium-ion battery

composed of 48 compact modules powers the NISMO RC version and a high-response 80kW AC synchronous motor generates 107 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque.

This year’s Goodwood looks set to be one of the most ambitious ones yet! Anyone who gets to venture down is very lucky indeed!

Burroughs stars against champions Martin Read Cricket

Horsham got the better of a draw when they visited champions Preston Nomads.

Opener John Burroughs compiled a well-crafted 96, Craig Gallagher a quickfire 46 and Sam Attfield 31.

From a commanding 225-5 Horsham’s innings petered out with three runouts and two wickets from Sussex’s James Anyon, leaving doubts whether 236 was sufficient.

But from 31-3 the hosts lost wickets regularly – including Sussex’s Joe Gatting for one – and they subsided to a perilous 110-7 until reaching safety with a partnership of 74.

Horsham rang the changes, but were unable to force a win despite a superb catch from Attfield. Matt Henry (5-62) and Michael Munday (3-60) were the sole wicket-takers.

Horsham skipper Gallagher was

faced with a quandary after winning the toss.

He said: “The outfield was wet and difficult for our bowlers, but it was not too batting-friendly either.

“It was disappointing that Nomads made no real attempt to go for the runs in more favourable sunny conditions.”

Roffey secured an excellent victory at Chichester after inserting the hosts and restricting them to an inadequate 203-8 in 52 overs, thanks to 3-62 from Andy McGorian, 3-36 from Matt Davies and a miserly 2-37 in 21 overs from Luke Barnard.

Chichester looked well-placed at 124-2 but were never able to break free.

Skipper Mike Norris lead the way with an excellent 93 as Roffey romped home with four overs to spare.

Hastings returned to the top of the table after dismissing lowly Pulborough for 84 and cruising to a sixwicket win.

In the Gray Nicolls 20/20 Cup, Horsham reached 83-2 after 10 overs against Pulborough, Gallagher hitting three sixes in his 37 from 25 balls.

Devon Endersby was out for 31 in the next over and the loss of two more quick wickets slowed the run rate. With five overs remaining, the score was a modest 107-5.

But the last 30 balls produced 52

runs, mainly through an abrasive partnership between Owen Jones (32 not out) and Sam Cushing (27), who plundered four fours and three sixes between them.

Max Barson took 2-24, Shane West 2-30 and Rohit Jagota 2-41.

Pulborough got off to the worst possible start when former Horsham player Will Howard was caught off the first ball of the innings.

Two excellent catches reduced the visitors to 15-3 in the third over, including the crucial wicket of Jagota for four, and the score only reached 67-4 at the halfway stage.

Tight bowling from Henry (3-16) and Munday (1-19 in four overs) all but dried up the run scoring until Pulborough succumbed with a runout in the 19th over.

Skipper Gallagher said: “We started brilliantly with three quick wickets and that really set Pulborough back.

“Matt Henry bowled well again and when Michael Munday came on we were in control. Our fielding was good and we like this format, so bring on the next game.”

Roffey (164-6) beat Cuckfield (163-7) by four wickets in the same competition.

When Storrington beat England – twice Martin Read Cricket

Storrington Cricket Club celebrated its 200th anniversary in 1993.

The club was influential in the development of cricket, defeating a Sussex county team in 1800, a feat repeated in 1811. At that time, two of England’s most distinguished players – John Hammond and William Ayling – were in the village team.

The Hammond family featured prominently in the club’s early days, Ernest Hammond being landlord of the White Horse pub in the village.

Arthur Gilligan, former Sussex and England captain, was president of Storrington for more than 20 years.

And, the fictional West Sussex village of Tillingford, in Hugh de Selincourt’s book The Cricket Match, bore a striking resemblance to Storrington.

De Selincourt captained Storrington for seven years in the 1920s and his picture adorns today’s pavilion, along with another depicting a very early Storrington match.

The club was a founder member of the West Sussex Invitation League, in which the two Saturday teams still compete.

At the halfway point in the season the first XI are second in their division and the seconds are top, having won five of their eight matches.

On Sundays there is a full fixture list of friendlies.

Former youth players are feeding through into the senior sides and it is proposed that the club’s colts development strategy is further advanced by an association with Storrington Vipers Football Club.

There is a strong commitment to broaden the junior section to enable the club to run teams at a full range of age groups.

Chairman Phil Pickard describes the club as “flourishing and in the ascendancy, with a good cross-section of emerging players blending youth and experience”.

A strong family thread runs through the club, with sons playing alongside their fathers. Pickard’s own sons, Matt and Dan, are strong performers.

An inter-club 15-over tournament, in association with Amberley CC, has been arranged for the August Bank Holiday.

And following a previous excursion to Somerset, a tour to Belgium has just been completed, the match

against the Royal Brussels CC being especially memorable.

Touring is a strong tradition – the club’s first cricketing trip was to the Isle of Wight in 1878.

Touring sides are also keen to sample Storrington’s hospitality. This year a side from Oxford will visit, along with a team of doctors, and the club has just hosted a local church tournament.

Storrington’s modern pavilion adjoins the Chanctonbury Sports and Leisure Centre, where the club is fortunate to have net facilities.

The ample playing area, a good hit to the duck pond, is flanked by trees and some pleasantly mellow houses.

The new streamlined committee is a strong team pulling together with good fresh ideas on managing the key

elements of the club.

Grants have been received to provide new equipment and improve the drainage. Social activities include golf days, barbecues, curry nights and the club dinner.

All these strengthen the good club spirit, which was much in evidence in April when members of all ages got together to prepare the pavilion and ground, under the England and Wales Cricket Board CricketForce initiative.

Storrington are lucky to have the services of Colin Harrison, who does much of the work on the ground, a task he took on about 25 years ago.

Harrison first played for Storrington as a 14-year-old in 1967.

“He’s a diamond, an absolute treasure” beams Pickard, who also stresses the “invaluable contribution” of

treasurer Colin Williams and other officials.

Few cricket clubs in the world have played through four centuries, so The Swans can be justifiably proud of their heritage and contribution to cricket.

The club is in safe hands and still evolving, ensuring it will remain keen to pioneer innovative cricketing developments.

Cup joy for three young teams

Cricket Nuthurst (175-3) beat Hove Unicorns (58) by 117 runs after being put in on a damp and difficult pitch.

Raggi Singh made 69 and Buzz Mckenna 42 not out – the latter surviving when he appeared to be run out, only for the bails to stay on.

The Unicorns missed seven catches and were no match with the bat as comeback king Nick Evans captured 4-4 in four overs of spin.

Youth Cricket

Horsham U15, Barns Green U13 and The Forest School U13 are all celebrating trophy triumphs.

Horsham U15 won the Sussex Cup, beating Preston Nomads U13 by 102 runs at the Sutton Winson Academy Ground, Blackstone.

Opener Eddie Wells (retired at 50) and John Barron (37) shared a thirdwicket stand of 92 and Nick Klein added a quickfire 23 as Horsham finished their 20 overs on an impressive 164.

Nomads lost a wicket in the first over, James Oliver bowled by Klein two balls after hitting him for six.

Klein claimed the key wicket of captain Dan Andrews, David Drage captured two wickets in his final over and Wells was the pick of the bowlers with 4-4. Keen fielding, a runout

by Drage and a stumping by Michael Thomas also helped.

Horsham will represent Sussex in the next round, at the winners of the Middlesex Cup on July 24.

Barns Green U13 won the Sussex Cup for the second successive year, completing a double after winning the IDentilam Colts League.

Green beat Crawley by 109 runs, The Chipps by 101 runs and Worthing by 35 runs before a dramatic semi-final win against Cuckfield.

Hugo Cowan retired on 33 as Green scored 119-4, but Cuckfield looked set for victory before a brilliant spell of 5-11 by Isaac Dibsdall and great catches by Will Lake and George Leigh.

Cuckfield needed seven from the final over, but runouts by Cowan and Dibsdall left them just short.

Green scored 111 in their 20 overs against Brighton and Hove in the final at Blackstone.

Tom Haynes (26), Dibsdall (30 retired), Cowan, Leigh and Alex Walker contributed with the bat before Ben Hill (3-22), Dibsdall (2-17) and Haynes (2-10) did the damage with the ball.

Bryn Bloodworth claimed four fantastic stumpings to leave Brighton and Hove needing 14 from the final over. They got it down to six from the last ball, but Ellie Monk fielded the ball on the boundary.

Cowan and Haynes have represented Sussex for four years and Monk is in the county’s U13 Girls.

Green have a bye in the county play-off, so go straight into the South

Another victory would take the village juniors through to the heady heights of the National ECB Finals, at Rutland in August.

The Forest School U13 defeated Tanbridge House School U13 by 60 runs to win the Sussex Schools Cup, contested by 30 teams from private and state schools.

Forest made 150-5 in 25 overs, thanks largely to Alex Glossop (25), Isaac Dibsdall (27) and Jack Reeves (35 not out).

Tanbridge managed only 90, with Dibsdall taking three wickets and Glossop two. David Carruthers executed two runouts and Hugo Vickers another.

Coach Mike Wickham said: “The boys have been incredible. They are very talented and played great cricket throughout the competition. To win overall with the calibre of schools who take part is fantastic.”

Steyning U10 comfortably defeated Billingshurst U10 in the IDentilam Colts League as left-arm spinner Nathan Tyler impressed.

Billingshurst captain Tom Alexander unleashed some good hits and team-mate Isaac Thornley took two wickets in his first over, including one with his first ball, but Chris Barnett produced a fine innings for Steyning.

Harry Goldsmith, stand-in wicketkeeper for Billingshurst, was exceptional behind the sticks.

Youth Baseball Horsham Junior Baseball Club teams were involved in two close games.

The Yankees edged out the Red Sox 15-14 in the Vision Express Pinto League, while the Athletics overcame the Red Sox 21-19 in the Slinfold Country Club Bronco Pony League.

Being unable to field a full team due to GCSEs, the Mets forfeited their Pony League game against the Yankees.

Youth Karate Kenagi’s national squad enjoyed success in the London International Open, at the London Soccerdome, Greenwich.

Luke Harty, 17, led the way with two individual gold medals and a silver, while Nicole Davies, 14, won two golds, Melanie Davies, nine, took gold and silver, and Lorna Harty, 19, claimed gold and bronze.

Melanie Davies, Nicole Davies and Megan Banks, 14, won team bronze.

Luke Harty, Lorna Harty, Melanie Davis and Nicole Davies are from Horsham, Banks from Storrington.

Kenagi’s classes take part in Horsham, Southwater and Storrington.

Atlantis turn on the style Jolyon Palmer in Valencia

Southwater’s Jolyon Palmer narrowly missed out on claiming his first GP2 points in Valencia at the weekend.

Despite having never raced at the Spanish street circuit before, the 20-year-old moved from 17th on the grid to ninth at the flag in the feature race on Saturday, only one place adrift of his first points finish.

The 2010 Formula Two runner-up capitalised on two first-lap incidents and was fourth before pitting late in the race.

His decision to pit late meant his car’s tyres stayed fresher for longer, so he was able to pass several drivers in consecutive laps.

Palmer started the sprint race on Sunday from ninth on the grid, but he was denied a likely top-10 finish when he was forced to take evasive action on the opening lap, causing front-wing damage.

A gearbox problem forced him to retire, ending what had been a promising weekend on his maiden visit to the circuit.

Palmer said: “It was a good race on Saturday. After the pit stop I came out a few places further down, but I managed to push very hard and made some good passes to finish ninth, just outside the points.”

Palmer will be in action next weekend (July 8-10) at Silverstone, home of the GP2 British Grand Prix.

Atlantis registered a convincing victory in the Sussex Swimming League at the Arun Leisure Centre, Bognor Regis.

The Horsham club was competing against Mid Sussex Marlins and Littlehampton, who both came into the gala on the back of wins in the previous round. Marlins were on a particular high after beating Crawley, last year’s champions.

The Atlantis team made its intentions clear from the first race, with Rebecca Lobley winning the U16 individual medley, raced into a 20-point lead after 10 of the 55 events and gradually extended their lead.

The gala ended with a crescendo of noise from excited swimmers and supporters for the traditional mixed squadron relay, with one boy and one girl from each age group swimming in ascending order.

The lead in the final relay swung first towards Atlantis then back to Marlins, but Guy Sherwin made sure Atlantis finished in style.

Atlantis finished with 409 points, to Mid Sussex Marlins’ 322 and Littlehampton’s 279.

Many in the Atlantis camp were left wondering what might have been in the first gala, in which an understrength Atlantis finished behind resurgent Brighton.

Atlantis will contest their final gala against Crawley and East Grinstead at the K2, Crawley, on July 9.

Brighton have already been crowned league champions, but Atlantis can finish runners-up – equalling their highest Sussex League finish, achieved last year.

Team manager Andy Lobley said: “All the guys amazed me tonight. What a performance! Each and every one of the team was fantastic.

Senior Boys captain Cameron Lambourne attended the Sussex ASA awards ceremony in Brighton, where he collected his trophies for being the county’s Junior and Open 100m freestyle champion.

He also collected the Open 100m backstroke trophy on behalf of Senior Girls captain Katy Harris.

was elected to the Sussex ASA management committee and Lobley to the swimming committee.

Dunlop said: “Atlantis has decided to get more involved with the county to see if we can help develop a progressive strategy to increase the standard of competitive swimming, increasing the number of local swimmers wanting to become involved in this great sport.”

Bowls Horsham lost 112-95 to tourists South Cambridgeshire, who relied on Sussex hospitality as their gear was impounded with their coach after a crash.

Mike Power, who skipped Chris Holmes, Val Redwood and Tony Venn to a six-shot win on their rink, said: “It is always a pleasure to entertain touring clubs and many new bowling friendships are forged on those occasions.”

Horsham were edged out 56-55 by Guildford, who only brought three triples to the Bishopric.

Captain Robin Machell said: “We lost some of our strength when we had to drop one of our triples, but that does not detract from Guildford’s narrow win in an enjoyable game.”
