Horsham District Council has decided to freeze its share of the council tax for the year from April. In common with most district, borough and county councils across the country, Horsham is accepting government money equivalent to a 2.5 per cent council tax increase in return for freezing the tax in 2012-3. West Sussex County Council and Sussex Police Authority have also decided not to increase their share of the council tax from next month. Cllr Ray Dawe, new leader of the district council, said: “We made an election pledge when we were re-elected last May not to increase council tax for both the current year and for the next financial year. “I am delighted we are still able to do this, despite the difficult economic situation. I am sure it will be of great help to all our residents throughout the district.” Horsham District Council has agreed measures to cut its net budget by £1 million in the year from April. These include increases in car parking charges and sharing services with other authorities. The council has also set aside £350,000 from reserves to meet estimated redundancy costs. Global superstar Adele is the talk of the village after renting a £6 million mansion in Partridge Green. And The Resident can exclusively reveal that her new next-door neighbour is none other than Cllr Jonathan Chowen, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet member for arts, heritage and leisure.

It’s incredible to ‘have such a talented, famous neighbour ’

The Conservative councillor, who recently shot to public attention over the vexed issue of Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre, told us: “The most I have seen is a few blacked-out Range Rovers. But she is here, renting the house next door. “The staff at the Co-op have served her and the people of the village are all extremely excited. I am absolutely a big fan. It’s incredible to have such a talented, famous neighbour. “I am not expecting to see much of her. I expect that when she does

spend time here, it will be because it’s peaceful and somewhere she can rest and recouperate. “Because of that, there has been no sign of the paparazzi, who are clearly respecting her privacy, along with those who live here.” The star’s rise to fame has been meteoric over the past 12 months, helped by her performance of Someone Like You at the 2011 Brit Awards. The song is taken from her second album, 21, named after the age at which she wrote it.

The record sold more copies in its first 12 months than any other in history during the same period. Such is her success, it is estimated that an Adele album was purchased every six seconds last year. This year she received six Grammy Awards – something only Beyonce has ever achieved – and two Brits. At the Grammys, her performance of Rolling in the Deep sparked a standing ovation from a theatre filled with industry professionals and firstclass artists.

Council tax is frozen Continued from Page 1 Cllr David Holmes, leader of the council’s Liberal Democrat group, said: “While we broadly accept the £1 million budget changes, we do have huge concerns with the management of this council. “This council is like a rudderless ship. It lurches from one disaster to the next. “In the last financial year we had the undetected million pound overspend in operational services. “This year we have proposals for evening and Sunday parking charges followed by an ill-considered plan to demolish Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre. “The council plans to dispose of the town hall, consider building on Chesworth Farm and is consulting on building up to another 14,000 houses. And when new houses are planned there is no certainty they will be houses that local people can afford. “This council’s financial problems are not just due to government cuts. Many of this council’s problems are of its own making. “Year after year, the council tax increases have been kept low or frozen. Not because it made sense, but because it looks good on an election leaflet. “An average annual district council tax bill is £135. A one per cent increase is £1.35, not a large sum to pay if it helps retain essential services. “The result is that now we have far less council tax coming in than other local authorities and a diminishing government grant. Our next steps require very careful consideration.”

Why the Smart money is on a Brucie bonus Intrepid explorer Bruce Smart rode in to the Foundry Lane office of the Born Free Foundation. Setting off from the Cenotaph in London on October 1, Mr Smart will embark upon a 100,000 mile, 66-country motorbike adventure in aid of the foundation, a London hospice, the Royal British Legion and the Children’s Trust. He aims to raise £1 million. Mr Smart said: “It will be a journey of extremes for both machine and rider. To take a sports bike around the world in 12-16 months, across desert, over rock, through jungle and swamp, is in itself extraordinary. “Unsupported, through every type of terrain, in all weathers, I will travel the globe on a machine bred for the race track.” During his adventure, Mr Smart hopes to visit Born Free’s sanctuaries in South Africa and Ethiopia, among

others, to see how the charity looks after animals rescued from lives of suffering. Joanne Bartholomew, who manages Born Free’s events and fundraising, said: “It was fantastic for Born Free

staff to meet Bruce when he popped into our office, arriving on the very bike upon which he will complete his amazing challenge.” For more information, visit www. teapotone.com

Death crash driver jailed A man has been jailed for six months after a fatal crash on the A24 at Dial Post in January last year. Cary Gordon was working as a recovery driver with a Renault truck when it was involved in a collision with a Nissan Micra driven by Christopher Alderton, 30, from Suffolk. Gordon, 49, of Marine Parade, Worthing, was sentenced at Hove Crown Court this week after admitting causing death by careless driving. Mr Alderton’s family said: “Nothing will ever bring Christopher back and he will be eternally missed by all those who knew and loved him. “This type of junction has a history of accidents. How many more people have to die before action is taken? “The loss of Christopher will be with us for the rest of our lives. We do not want another family to suffer in this dreadful way.”

Horsham’s part in Paralympics Horsham will hold a flame celebration as part of the Paralympic Torch Relay, the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) has announced. Someone from West Sussex will be chosen to act as a flame ambassador, attend one of four lighting events and take part of the flame to the celebration in Horsham. Cllr Sue Rogers, Horsham District Council Cabinet member, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Horsham will host a flame celebration in the build-up to the London 2012 Paralympic Games. “It is a fabulous opportunity for local groups and individuals to celebrate the endeavour and determination of our Paralympians, while at the same time recognising their own

achievements. “Horsham district has always championed inclusion and participation. I hope that as many people as possible will help us welcome the Paralympic movement to Horsham in August.” Chris Holmes, director of Paralympic integration, said: “We are thrilled to announce that Horsham will play host to a flame celebration. “I know that people from Horsham will get involved in this celebration and help ignite passion for the Paralympics across the UK.” People will also be encouraged to help show the way to the Paralympic Games by lighting a lantern. How Collyer’s students made a difference to African youngsters A teacher and four students from Collyer’s visited Africa for a week to help develop education there. Katie Bashford, Ian Groves, Dan Mannion and Jayson Probin joined Joe Brock, head of Science and Maths, in The Gambia after students developed equipment and a training book to teach electricity anywhere. Eighty teachers attended two main workshops at the Teacher Training College in Bricama, on the outskirts of Banjul. One featured the students’ electricity model and Physics experiments, including models of radioactivity, rocket science, hydraulics, and sound and light.

are a credit ‘toThey Collyer’s and Horsham ’

The other was based around microscopy and looking at images from both the manmade and biological worlds. The Gambians also benefited from simple but effective Chemistry experiments. Jayson told The Resident: “Much of the teaching in The Gambia, as in many African countries, lacks the

depth required to apply the knowledge to new situations and is hindering the development of science and engineering. “Many students give up Science as soon as they can, as they see it as a difficult and abstract subject that has little to do with their lives.” Dan said: “It was a brilliant trip. I found the experience emotional as there is a big difference between reading about things and actually experiencing them.” The visit was part-funded by the Jephcott Trust and made in association with Projects Aiding Gambian Education and Natural Talent (PAGEANT), a charity run by Pippa and Ian Howard from Southwater. Mr Brock said: “The Collyer’s students acted as trainers, having developed their practical experiments before going out. “Through funding from PAGEANT and the Institute of Education, we were able to donate 30 science kits and 30 electricity kits to college and trainee teachers about to embark on their teaching careers.” Students Lucy Barnett, Fred Golding and Ashleigh Robinson visited the Institute of Physics in London to present the electricity project to all of the Africa co-ordinators. They hope resources developed by Collyer’s students will be used across Africa and possibly in China

This is the first time I’ve allowed students to take such hands-on roles and I would certainly do it again, as the teams at home and in The Gambia have been incredible ambassadors.” Collyer’s principal Jackie Johnston said: “The level of planning required was extraordinary and I’m really proud of Joe Brock and these talented students. Horsham offers more than car parks and roads Nik Butler www.loudmouthman.com

@loudmouthman

Horsham, like football, is a funny old game. It mixes up a new development attitude with a desire to hold onto traditional values. Like an over-tanned 60-year-old man trying to dress like a hipster, ordering a garbled froth of coffee in Starbucks and squinting into his iPhone, it’s a confused collection of ideas, symbols and traditions which

are never going to change. It has a town centre which is not within its centre! Go and have a look at Horsham on maps.google.co.uk and you can see that the centre of town is pretty much on the edge. I am pretty sure there are parts of Horsham that are closer to Bewbush in Crawley than they are to Southwater. But it’s statements like that which lead to people getting funny ideas about consultation papers, so let’s not go there. The point – and there might actually be a point to this – is that Horsham is not the town we think it is. I suspect that many people who

live in Horsham are unaware of Horsham as a town and a place. Instead they have an idea of roads and car parks and markets and malls and then home again. A few of us know of a different Horsham. We know of the trees that line the roadsides, the paths which curve between houses and estates, how to circumvent miles of roadways with a few deft turns. We know of convenience stores and garages and businesses and pubs and parks and pavements and benches and bus stops. Yet we do not share this, if only because no one has stopped to ask.

Horsham may have a big community, but it is a small town. To stroll from Littlehaven station to the Carfax takes a little under 30 minutes. Jump on a bike and it can take a little under 10 minutes. What can we do to encourage people to make use of this grand opportunity? I suspect increases in parking fees and fuel costs might turn a few heads to consider that strip of concrete on which they place their wheelie bins and wonder where it might lead. The challenges to modern-day vehicle owners are increasing as I see renewed interest in the 20’s Plenty

campaign (www.20splentyforus.org. uk), encouraging urban areas to consider reducing the limit to 20 mph. Perhaps we should first recognise that 30 is already the limit and not a target to be sustained. Except hubris and genuine emergencies, there is nothing to stop vehicle operators from reducing their speed. When we consider Horsham in all its mismatched, sprawling development and architecture, I hope we take into account that it offers more than its car parks and access roads. A shared experience in community is lost when we sit behind a wheel and wait for a light to change colour.

There are no magic solutions to this drought Tony Whitbread Sussex Wildlife Trust

It may seem strange in wet, soggy Britain to talk about a drought, especially in winter, because it’s always raining here isn’t it? Reservoirs, which supply about 20 per cent of our water, are less than half full. Eighty per cent of our water comes from underground aquifers, mostly under the South Downs, and these are pretty low on water too. Probably as low as they have ever been. They are supposed to be full in winter and only get low later in summer.

Streams that should be coming out of the South Downs are either low or non-existent and areas that should now be wet are dry. Fish won’t be able swim upstream to spawn, wetland birds like redshank, snipe and lapwing will suffer, there will be fewer invertebrates that feed the rest of the food chain, and wetland plants will be more restricted and flower less. Low water levels in rivers will also mean that pollution incidents will be more severe as there is less water to dilute them. People are therefore coming forward with their own solutions to the problem – desalination plants (hugely

expensive, use up large amounts of energy and produce saline pollution), a ‘national grid’ for water (but water is heavy and it would take enormous amounts of energy to pump over large distances) and, of course, more reservoirs. But reservoirs are not a panacea. To build them, we would have to flood what is already there so could wipe out any existing wildlife interest. They are also hugely expensive and might take 20 years to become operational. We only get 20 per cent of our water from reservoirs, so even if you managed to double their area (unlikely) you would only increase the

amount available by 20 per cent. With the population increases, and the per capita consumption increases we talk about, that will not get us very far. And that’s assuming there is enough rain to fill them. The problem is deeper than this. There are too many of us, each with too high a water demand on too small an area. The result is that there is now less water per head of population in the South East than there is for people in Ethiopia. We may be able to achieve some very minor improvements through these technological fixes, but we are running up against real environmental limits.

Overall, techno-fixes like these will be about as successful as doing the rain dance that was talked about on BBC local radio. And techno-fixes will come with their own problems, which could be as bad, or worse, than water shortage. Water is one of those resources that fundamentally questions our basic assumption that we are able – indeed, have the right – to expand consumption in all directions, no matter what. The only answer is to live within environmental limits rather than imagine there are magic technological solutions. This means using less water.

What a load of rubbish! John Condé Nutham Lane, Southwater

The A24 from Buck Barn to the Broadbridge Heath underpass is in a disgusting state with litter. The central reservation at Broadbridge Heath is the worst. As this is the ring road around Horsham, what sort of impression does it give to non-Horsham residents? I have tried time and again phoning the council’s depot and complaining.

I would like to say a massive thank you to all of the local people and local businesses that attended our charity open evening in Horsham on February 23. Having recently moved back to Horsham, we advertised the open evening as an opportunity for us to meet local people, share information about who we are and what we do, and for local people to find out how they could get involved through volunteering or similar. The event was a great success and

A number of people were interested in getting involved and we will be back in touch with all of them shortly. East Surrey Hospital deserves high praise Robert Mayfield Chichester Terrace, Horsham

The side effects of any medication can at times be quite dramatic, as I discovered recently. As a result, I found myself in the Surgical Assessment Unit at East Surrey Hospital for three

days. Once the journey was over, the hospital sorted me out very quickly and made my stay as comfortable as possible in the capable hands of the dedicated doctors and nurses. Let us hope that any new, more accessible hospital built closer to Horsham can come up to the same high standards.

K Chapman Penlands Rise, Steyning

Horsham bus station is a stateof-the-art, modern building mostly made of glass. Unfortunately the glass is rarely cleaned. Many weeks ago, someone threw a milky drink all over one of the main doors. It is still there! What is the point of building, probably with taxpayers’ money, an all-glass structure and then not maintaining it?

The lower windows should be cleaned regularly and the uppers at least a few times a year. As for the ceiling, it has probably not been touched since it was built, as it is covered in dirt and cobwebs. I realise times are hard and savings have to be made, but you cannot be complacent where cleaning is concerned. Cleaning the glass structure at Horsham bus station would cost very little and make a huge difference to the appearance of the town, especially to visitors who are needed in the shops.

Simon Clare horsham.skepticsinthepub.org

@Horsham_Skeptic

201 years ago, Horsham’s most famous son was expelled from Oxford University for refusing to deny that he wrote a pamphlet called The Necessity of Atheism. Thank goodness the passage of two centuries has consigned such silliness to history and we can now discuss such subjects openly without fear of the consequences. Shelley’s expulsion led to a deterioration in his relationship with his father from which it never recovered and Horsham never became the home for Shelley that it should have been. Percy’s nights out on the Carfax with his famous friends never became legend. Byron was never thrown into Horsham gaol for some debauchery or other and Keats never wrote his famous poem about the kingfishers on Red River. Such things carried on not happening in Horsham for another two centuries, and they are still not happening in the town today. The gap in Horsham’s potential cultural history that was left behind after Shelley published that pamphlet and fell out with his dad was always going to be hard to fill, but two centuries is time enough. The culture of a town is not something that ‘other people’ do. If you leave it to them, you will probably find that they are leaving it to you as well and nothing will happen. Culture is something that emerges when we participate in things; when we make stuff and show it off, when we talk to others about what we have seen and what we liked or disliked about it, and how we might have done it differently. Normally we do this privately with our friends and family and it’s rare these days to find opportunities to do this with our community. At Horsham Skeptics in the Pub we provide one such place where you can participate in the culture of your community. We put on interesting talks which are followed by Q&A sessions, during which the audience get to talk freely with the guest speaker. The questions from the audience can absolutely ignite the evenings. It isn’t a highbrow philosophical debating society, we just host a guest speaker each month and they speak on a wide variety of subjects. For instance, a few days after his recent fascinating talk for us on the use of statistics in politics, Chris Snowdon was on Radio 4’s Today programme talking about plain packaging for cigarettes. On the March 5, at the Tanner’s Arms, we have the managing editor of The Skeptic, Deborah Hyde, returning to showcase her new talk about werewolves and their role in the witch trials of the 16th and 17th centuries. Come along and help Horsham’s culture to re-emerge from the shadow cast by Shelley’s absence.

Tree will be talk of the village in 2162

Andrew Sharp and Cllr Ray Osgood plant the Diamond Jubilee Tree

Henfield villagers planted a tree to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year. The young oak was grown by the Woodland Trust from a Royal Estate acorn, collected from either Windsor Great Park or Sandringham. Members of Henfield Commons Committee, Henfield Parish Council and Horsham District Council attended the planting event, at the south end of The Tanyard. Andrew Sharp, chairman of the Commons Committee, said: “We can imagine that in 150 years’ time this tree will be a focal point and known as the Diamond Jubilee Tree.”

Henfield will mark the Diamond Jubilee in other ways, including street parties. Plans are being made for a permanent wrought iron hanging basket post, suitably inscribed, to be placed in the village centre near Barclays Bank. And Henfield Garden Club will plant a Jubilee Garden near the Henfield Hall. Henfield High Street will feature a red, white and blue planting scheme in the parish council planters. On Sunday, June 3, a celebration will be held in the parish church and a Last Night of the Proms evening will be held at Red Oaks.

Digital revolution gathers pace Innovative scheme for North Street The biggest change to television in a generation began this week, as analogue signals were turned off across much of West Sussex and digital TV boosted to reach all areas. The start of TV switchover for the BBC South region means that thousands of viewers in digital blackspots, including Horsham, can now get BBC Freeview channels for the first time, while picture quality will improve for many existing viewers. People who are already watching Freeview need to retune their TVs and boxes in order to regain their BBC services. Switchover began in the early hours of Wednesday, when analogue BBC2 was permanently turned off at

the Midhurst transmitter group. The process will be completed on March 14, when the remaining analogue channels will be switched off. Further Freeview channels from ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 will then be available from local transmitters for the first time. The Switchover Help Scheme is still welcoming applications from eligible older and disabled people to get help to convert one television, including a choice of equipment and installation. For those who have already signed up, the help scheme call centre is available to deal with any problems and can be contacted on 0800 4085900. Bill Taylor, Digital UK manager for the region, said of the switchover:

“This is great news for West Sussex, as many people are receiving new channels for the first time. “Those viewers who haven’t switched to digital should prepare for March 14, when the last analogue channels will be permanently switched off. Our advice is to get ready now and don’t leave it until the last minute. “While the process will be straightforward for most people, inevitably some viewers may need a bit of extra help. We are working with the Switchover Help Scheme and local charities to offer support for those who need it.” For more information, phone 0845 6505050 or visit www.digitaluk. co.uk/meridianevents

Horsham in Bloom will create what it calls “an exciting, new and large-scale planting scheme” in North Street as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Designed by Horsham District Council in the style of the contemporary Dutch Wave, the scheme features herbaceous plants and grasses. Liz Timmer, vice-chairman of Horsham in Bloom, said: “This innovative planting is a great

opportunity to make this prominent part of town even more attractive. “It will welcome visitors to the town and complement the current improvements to the railway station.” Involving students from Chichester College and volunteers from Horsham’s Green Gym, the project will start this month. Pets abandoned After RSPCA figures showed a 31 per cent rise in abandonment calls over the last five years, a Horsham veterinary surgery is encouraging people to take good care of their animals. Julian Peters, owner of Arthur Lodge, said: “It is apparent that many people are not coping with the cost of a pet at this financially difficult time. However, there are precautions you can take to ensure that the cost does not become too much. “Although some of these things may be expensive at the outset, they will save a great deal of money in the long term and it is important for owners to realise this.” Arthur Lodge says pet owners should keep on top of vaccinations, get animals neutered, exercise pets and be careful not to over-feed them.

Celebrations start after 125 years The Salvation Army will stage a series of events to celebrate its 125 years in Horsham and Crawley. A musical festival, featuring the church’s groups and guest soloist Anthony Harris, will take place at the Salvation Army’s centre in Booth Way, Horsham, from 6pm tomorrow (Saturday). The morning service on Sunday will be led by Commissioner Robert Street, international secretary for Europe. Church members and supporters will gather in the Carfax at 2.30pm on Sunday before a march of witness to St Mary’s Church for a service of thanksgiving at 3.30pm.

Other planned events include visits from Salvation Army musical groups in Bournemouth and Chelmsford, and a weekend of concerts by the Household Troops Band in August. Capt Ian Woodgate said: “In these days when the world is told the Christian Church is dying, we can testify that the Christian Church is alive and well. “Despite all that 125 years has brought its way, the Salvation Army in Horsham and Crawley can witness to the living reality of Jesus Christ today. We think that’s worth a celebration.” For more information, visit www. salvationarmy.org.uk/horsham

Trio helping prevent antisocial behaviour Horsham District Council’s antisocial behaviour team has been helping turn around lives. Three council officers – Kirsty Lindgren, Shelley Gosden and Amy Parsons – are based at Horsham Police Station and work as part of the Horsham District Community Safety Partnership.

The team dealt with more than 300 cases last year – and in 70 per cent the individual did not come to further notice. Ways of dealing with antisocial behaviour include a police visit, community resolution, mediation, an antisocial behaviour order (ASBO) and an acceptable behaviour contract

Appeal for library books West Sussex libraries and councillors are urging residents to donate good-quality books. Cllr Lionel Barnard, deputy leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “This is an excellent opportunity to support our local libraries and to keep the shelves full with lots of

choice. “Donating your books is as good for the environment as doing your bit towards recycling and also means they can be read again and again.” For more information, phone 01243 642111 or visit www. westsussex.gov.uk/libraries

(ABC). One person who has been on an ABC said: “I have become more calm and living the life of an adult now. I’m staying out of trouble and hanging around with the right sort of people.” Cllr Sue Rogers, district council Cabinet member, said: “Dealing with the causes of antisocial behaviour is usually complex and challenging, but feeling safe in your community and in your home will always be of paramount importance. “The way in which we deal with antisocial behaviour in Horsham district is an example of great partnership working and in part contributes to the area being as safe as it is. “So often it requires a number of agencies to pull together and tackle issues from a number of different angles. Getting such partnership relationships right takes time, but is extremely effective when it happens.” Chief Insp Sharon Parker, of Sussex Police, said: “The ASB team have achieved significant success for the people of Horsham. The majority of interventions are successful and the feedback displays this.”

Water way to save So who will you run with? West Sussex County Council is joining the AquaFund shared saving scheme, helping reduce the amount of water it uses. The council will receive half of the savings from its part in the scheme, which provides a 100 per cent grant to cover the cost of water-saving equipment and a bill validation and tariff analysis service. Cllr Michael Brown, county council Cabinet member, said: “We estimate that the council can save 20 per cent of its current water

consumption by signing up to the scheme. Over the ive-year contract period, this equates to £160,000. “This scheme is so attractive as AquaFund donates one per cent of all its revenue directly to the charity Water Aid, which improves access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities. “It’s a win-win situation. Not only is the county council reducing its carbon footprint and water consumption, but in turn it is saving money.”

The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile will come to Horsham on Sunday, March 25. Setting off from near the Park Podium and Conservatory Café, the event will allow runners to savour the delights of Horsham Park while completing one, three or six miles. All of the money raised will help people who are living tough lives in the UK and in some of the world’s poorest countries. One of the MEPs for Horsham district is supporting Don’t Cut Us Out, a campaign to protect vulnerable adults from cuts by West Sussex County Council. Liberal Democrat Sharon Bowles, who represents the South East in the European Parliament, said: “Some cuts are necessary in this time of economic hardship, but the county council is wrong to cut support for elderly people and adults with learning disabilities. “Other county councils in the region, including Kent, have managed

to safeguard their adult services budgets. West Sussex could – and should – ind a way to do the same. “The people affected by these cuts are at poverty levels, either nearing the end of their lives or with life-long disabilities that prevent them from working. They need our support, not to be left out in the cold. “I urge West Sussex County Council to come to their senses and reinstate these lifeline services. I am proud to join my fellow Lib Dems in West Sussex in ighting these shamefully mistaken cuts.”

Mini charity challenge Registration has opened for the next Italian Job, the annual touring event founded by Steyning resident Freddie St George. Organisers aim to raise £100,000 for Variety, the children’s charity, when mini owners drive from Rome to Turin between October 26 and November 3.

Patron Mike Cooper said: “This brilliant event is a must for anyone mad about minis, old or new. It’s fun, it’s challenging, but most of all it’s a great way to raise money for the vital work Variety does with children and young people across the UK.” To sign up or for more information, visit www.italianjob.com

The perfect gift for the matriarch of your herd On Sunday, March 18, mums across the area will open chocolates and flowers from their children. This year, Horsham-based charity Care for the Wild is asking readers to give a different gift – showing they really care by adopting an orphaned elephant. The charity runs an extensive animal adoption programme and says an orphaned animal would make the perfect gift for any mum. Chief executive Philip Mansbridge said: “We all take our mums for granted now and again, but Mother’s Day is a way to show we care. At Care for the

Wild, we help lots of orphaned animals who lost their mothers through hunting or human conflict. “These orphans can no longer rely on their mums to look after them each day, so we’re asking local people to consider becoming ‘mum’ to one of these adorable animals as a Mother’s Day gift.” Adoptions are available at www. careforthewild.com/adoptions, by calling 01403 249832 or by visiting the Care for the Wild office at 72 Brighton Road, Horsham, during normal office hours. They cost just £24.95, plus £2.50

postage if required. Foster parents will receive a personalised adoption certificate in the name of the buyer or their mum, a picture of the elephant, a soft and cuddly elephant toy, information updates and regular newsletters. The charity hopes to sell 100 adoptions for Mother’s Day, raising £2,500 towards food and upkeep for adopted elephant Chemi Chemi, who was found wandering alone at just eight months old. Horsham Rugby Club will host the West Sussex Minis Festival on Sunday, March 11, two weeks before the club’s annual Minis Festival. The club, which hosted the first West Sussex festival 17 years ago, is organising this year’s county-wide event in association with the Sussex RFU and with sponsorship from the Canadian Spa Co. The winners will take on the winners of the East Sussex festival, held at Crowborough on the same day, to determine the Sussex champions at Eastbourne on April 1. Last year, Horsham U11 became West Sussex champions but were narrowly beaten by Brighton in the Sussex final.

More than 700 players, aged from six to 12, are expected to take part as the home club’s teams take on visitors from clubs across the county. After the pool stage, all teams will progress to the championship semifinals or into the Bowl, Plate, Salver or Vase competitions, so everyone enjoys a full day of rugby. The emphasis is on fun and a ‘fair play’ trophy will be awarded, but the U12 finishing position will determine which league the clubs enter as U13s next season. The car park will open at 9am, with matches starting at 10.30am and the finals at 2.30pm. A barbecue, refreshments and raffle are promised, with the bar opening at 11am.

Attending Microbiz? Make sure you come and say hello For her March column, Dee Blick passes on advice on how to make the most of networking and exhibitions Nine years ago I attended the irst ever Horsham Microbiz event at the Drill Hall. I can remember being hugely impressed with it - a small business paradise with great seminars, interesting exhibitors, good food and the opportunity to engage in a spot of networking - all wrapped up in a buzzing atmosphere. As the years have elapsed I confess to having at§tended every Microbiz event. My relationship with Microbiz has changed over the years however. I have progressed from being a visitor to a seminar speaker, exhibitor, and a sponsor and for the last three years, a heady combination of all three. Microbiz is a fantastic, vibrant event that any small business owner will beneit from attending. In the current economic climate especially small businesses have to be business and marketing savvy. Standing in the corner hoping that customers will beat a path to your door is to be avoided. Networking with other businesses, identifying potential strategic partnerships, inding good local suppliers and learning a thing or two from experts willing to share their advice at no charge is to be recommended. At Microbiz you can do all of this free. You only have to stump up for your refreshments. If you do come to Microbiz this year, and are looking for some marketing inspiration, you may be interested in booking a place on one of my

marketing seminars. I am running two 45 minute marketing masterclasses sharing 10 top recession busting marketing tips, underpinned by real-life small-business case studies. My seminars are usually very well attended and ill up quite quickly so please book your place beforehand to avoid being disappointed. And to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Microbiz, I will also be signing copies of The Ultimate Small Business Marketing Book for just £10 (the discounted price on Amazon) and my irst book Powerful Marketing on a Shoestring Budget for just £10 too. Hop onto Amazon and read the reviews. If you are planning on visiting Microbiz this year, here are 4 tips to help you gain the maximum beneit from attending. Allow at least a couple of hours so you can browse the exhibitors engage in a spot of networking and attend one or more of the free seminars. In all likelihood you will be there for several hours. It really is that enjoyable. If you are looking for new suppliers, make sure that you spend time with the exhibitors that loat your boat. Ask each one to expand on the beneits they can offer you, the customers they attract and whether they have any special 10th anniversary Microbiz offers. (If you don’t ask you won’t get!) Take a pad and pen to any seminars you attend. You don’t want to miss out on some great advice and, whilst you’re at it write down your burning

questions beforehand. If you are not able to ask them at the seminar try and catch up with the speaker afterwards. I often end up having coffee and a chat with several members of the audience. Don’t pitch your services to the exhibitors. There’s a time and a place and trying to sell to a business that has paid to exhibit is unlikely to go down well. Much better instead to ask if you can arrange to catch up after the event. If you are planning on coming to Microbiz this year do come and say hello to me won’t you especially if you’re a reader of my monthly Resident column. The doors open at 10 AM and close at 4 PM and the venue remains unchanged - the Drill Hall, Denne Road. The date: Saturday 10th March. Entry is free. If you want to book on one of my seminars (I am running one in the morning and one in the afternoon) or any of the others go to www.horshammicrobiz.co.uk but do not delay. Places are illing fast. See you there! Chartered Marketer and CIM Fellow Dee Blick is one of the UK’s best selling small business authors. The Ultimate Small Business Marketing Book reached number 1 on Amazon UK within 48 hours of its launch, entering Amazon’s top 150 books across all genres within four weeks. There are currently 43 out of 43 ive star reviews on Amazon. Dee has 28 years’ marketing experience and writes for Royal Mail and BT.

Award recognition for ‘exemplary’ care home staff

A member of staff at a Horshambased care home has been rewarded for her work as a care worker. Glenda Simpson was the runner up in the Carer category of the annual Shaw Healthcare South East Regional Star Awards, organised by the Shaw Healthcare group.

Martin Prince, regional director for Shaw Healthcare said: “Glenda has made a signiicant impact to one particular family, who view her care of their loved one as exemplary. “They particularly commend the thoughtfulness and understanding she shows, as well as her friendly and

conident manner. In their words, it is obvious to them that she sees her role as a vocation, rather than just a job.” The annual Shaw Healthcare South East Regional Star Awards take place at Shaw’s care home and regional ofice, Mill River Lodge in Horsham. Residents, relatives, visitors and staff attend in recognition of their special contributions towards the care they provide. A peer group panel selects the top ive individuals in each category where their achievements are recognised and honoured. Staff members were nominated in seven categories and each of 12 West Sussex care homes that are run by Shaw received a nomination in at least one category. Huma Bhatti, a care supporter and Anita Bell, a chef, also received nominations in their categories for their hard work at the care home and area manager of several Shaw homes including Mill River Lodge, Graham Clark, took the coveted title of Winner in the West Sussex Regional Recognition Award.

potential members who participate. From March 1–18, Curves of Horsham will collect non-perishable items and monetary donations for RISE, a local charity for women and their children in crisis. The goal, according to Gina Fretter of Curves of Horsham is for the community to come together to help people in need. “At the core of our business is the message that women are stronger when they rally together, and that is the point we hope to bring home with our food drive,” said Gina Fretter. “We want to show our community just how powerful the generosity of our members can be.” According to Gina, members who donate a bag of groceries or make a donation during the month of April will receive a gift. Non-members who do likewise between March 1 and 18 can join Curves for free. Curves will waive the cost to join, a savings of £149. Each year, Curves clubs collectively donate millions of pounds of food to feed the hungry. Over the past five years, a total of nearly 54 million kilograms of food

Anniversary concert held for Act Too Horsham and Haywards Heath based theatre company, Act Too, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. To mark the occasion, once again the group will provide talented amateur performers with the opportunity to star in its productions. They have announced a line up of shows and events for the coming year. Those include a brand new performance choir for adults called Choralize, which will meet weekly in Haywards Heath and Horsham. There will also be a junior version for the younger members. The group will also produce an amateur youth production of Cats for those up to age 21. For the adults there will be the 70’s musical Boogie Nights, featuring all the hits from that

decade including: Celebration, Play That Funky Music, Lady Marmalade, Blame it on the Boogie and a whole host of other favourites. Boogie Nights will hit the main hall at the Hawth Theatre, Crawley in September. The company also staged a celebratory concert featuring eleven performers from their academies and adult talent groups, which was attended by over 100 people. Group leader, Lance Milton, said: “We were delighted with the huge support and interest that still surrounds Act Too after 20 years. Everyone I spoke to seemed to have the best night and they were certainly all up dancing at the end!” For more information or to join them visit www.acttoo.co.uk

Brass and wind players wanted Do you play a band instrument? Or maybe you did, and taking it up again is on your ‘to do’ list? If you answered ‘yes’ to either of the above, then the Slinfold Concert Band would like to hear from you. The band was founded in 1978 by a few musical enthusiasts in Slinfold, who wanted to re-create the idea of a small village band. 34 years later the band has grown in both reputation and size, and now numbers around 50 players. If you play the trumpet, french or tenor horn or baritone sax (pictured with Robert Gardner, Jo Leathers and Polly Hobbs), or bassoon, think about how much fun you could have being a member of the ensemble. The band will even lend you a trumpet or french horn if necessary. They would also welcome a percussion kit player who reads music. As a rule of thumb, players of around grade 5 can cope with most of the music, but in the past the band has welcomed less experienced players, both old and young, whose playing has progressed within the band. Band meetings are held on a Tuesday evening at 7.30pm in Slinfold village hall. You are welcome to go along for an evening just to listen or, for more information, visit www. slinfoldconcertband.org or call Polly Hobbs for a chat on 01403 270198.

An Oscars red carpet round up Fashion Editor Sophia Moir reveals her style favourites from the 84th Academy Awards. Angelina Jolie Ms. Jolie looked like an absolute bombshell in her Atelier Versace gown and she was rumoured to be wearing $2.5 million worth of Neil Lane jewels. The actress was there to

present the award for Best Adapted Screenplay and to support her husband Brad, who was nominated for Best Actor. I love her milky complexion teamed with those statement red lips. Emma Stone Emma, whose film The Help was nominated for Best Picture, looked absolutely stunning on the red carpet. I love how she kept her hair in a neat up do, to draw attention to the ruffled bow detail of her red Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown. She teamed it with a bejewelled gold Louis Vuitton clutch, which complemented her look perfectly. Kristen Wiig I believe the actress, who cowrote Bridesmaids (nominated for Best Original Screenplay!) made a daring fashion choice on the red carpet by wearing a nude gown. They can often look bland and uninteresting at the Oscars, but she’s made this J. Mendel dress stand out from the crowd by teaming it with glossy brown locks and statement black nails. Judy Greer The Descendants actress certainly stood out in her Monique Lhuillier

optical illusion dress (a massive trend this season!), teamed with a metallic Judith Leiber clutch. I love how she took a fashion risk on the red carpet, where strapless dresses are standard attire! Good on you girl. Jennifer Lopez J-Lo looked stunning in her

silver striped Zuhair Murad gown. Not afraid to show both her cleavage and bare shoulders, she looked a million dollars. The American Idol judge presented the award for Best Costume Design and Make-up, along with the gorgeous Cameron Diaz. Ms Lopez later wowed at the Vanity Fair after party as well!

New event could help you find love - fast It’s about time Speed Dating came to Horsham. And now, two friends have decided to arrange an event in the town that is fun, relaxed and could help you meet ‘the one’. Caroline and Jo, who live in the area, realised there was little in the way of speed dating events around here, especially ones that were fun and not overwhelming. The result? They started their own! The pals now jointly run 21st Century Dater, a company that

organises the events for single people, and when it comes to looking for love – they’re pros. “We had been to speed dating events before, so we knew exactly how to make them relaxed, friendly and welcoming, not awkward”, Caroline said. “I want people to come to our events and feel reassured that they will have a nice evening. And I’d like to think we know how to organise something people will enjoy. We’ve been in their shoes.”

Caroline added: “There just didn’t seem to be a nice way to meet new people around here and actually get to know them. “This way, guests can have a drink and a chat and there’s a break in the middle for people to talk more. It will be a great evening.” The first of 21st Century Dater speed dating events will take place at the Anchor Hotel on March 15 at 7.30pm. Ages 24 to 38 welcome. Jim Davidson – Live, dangerous and uncompromising as ever

Jim Davidson is firmly established as one of Britain’s top stand-up comedians and he is well known to TV viewers as host of BBC TV game shows Generation Game and Big Break. He received an OBE for his services to charity and has three coveted Showbusiness Personality of The Year Awards from the Variety Club of Great Britain - The Grand Order of Water Rats and Comic Heritage. Since emerging from television’s New Faces he has topped theatre bills in London’s West End and at major venues all over the country. He has starred in and hosted several prime time TV shows including BBC TV’s Big Break and The Generation Game

as well as headlining record-breaking summer seasons and pantomimes, and playing highly successful concert tours with his adult show. His theatre production credits include hit West End shows Buddy and Great Balls of Fire and major family pantomimes throughout the UK. He has also starred with John Malkovich in the film Colour Me Kubrick, which made its international premiere at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival, New York where Jim’s performance was highly praised by film critics. He regularly tours the UK with his record-breaking adult stand-up shows and he recently completed a hugely successful debut tour in Australia.

Jim recently wrote and starred in his debut play Stand Up And Be Counted – an unflinching, no holdsbarred comedy about the meeting of two opposite ends of the comedy spectrum colliding at a charity fundraising event. The play was critically acclaimed and the subject of a large amount of national and regional media coverage. Jim is currently in talks with West End producers with a view to transferring the play to the London stage at a future date. In the meantime, he has just completed his first novel, Joined At The Hip. See Jim Davidson live on stage at The Capitol on Thursday, March 22 at 8pm

Fun and fabulous - ‘Wossy’s’ four poofs come to town

After four sell out shows at the Edinburgh Festival and direct from their 60 date UK tour ‘More hairdresser than barbershop’, 4 Poofs and a Piano - Ian Parkin, Stephen De Martin, David Roper and David Wickenden are embarking on a UK tour with a brand new show. Business as Usual is presented by Samuel Joseph, and is billed as another helping of frisky footwork and musical madness. In the show, the boys return with their popular brand of irreverent humour combined with a few harmonies. According to producers it’s ‘fun, outrageous and rarely in the best possible taste.’ 4 Poofs and a Piano became famous as the house band on BAFTA and comedy award winning Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, which ran on BBC1 from October 2001 to July 2010. During that time, David, Ian, Dave and Stephen became infamous for singing witty verses to A list celebrities both here and abroad. 4 Poofs and their piano have introduced guests ranging from Meryl Streep, Lionel Richie and Tom Jones to Will Young, Tom Hanks and John Travolta. They sang with Neil

Diamond on ITV’s ‘An Audience With Neil Diamond’ and also with Jimmy Osmond on Richard and Judy’s New Position. In Dec 2005 they released their first CD, Screaming Party Anthems, with Virgin EMI and make regular appearances at Glastonbury. During the JR series they also enjoyed enormous success in their own right, touring with Joan Collins, performing three sell out Edinburgh runs and headlining the cabaret tent at Glastonbury. Since leaving Jonathan Ross last year, the boys enjoyed a stint on ITV’s new breakfast show Daybreak and continued to win audiences across the country with their Edinburgh sell out show Smoke & Mirrorballs. They have also continued to be a success on the corporate cabaret market both here and abroad. They recently received rave reviews at Sadlers Wells as part of the Dancing With Children charity Gala 2011, in which they spoofed Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake to a rapturous response. See them at The Capitol in Horsham on Friday, March 23 at 8pm. Visit www.thecapitolhorsham.com or call 01403 750220 to book.

Horsham lettings agent is a ‘SAFE’ bet A Horsham lettings agent is delighted to announce that it has joined the SAFEagent campaign, meaning that its tenants and landlords can rest assured knowing their money is protected by a Client Money Protection scheme. Courtney Green is now displaying the SAFEagent logo, joining the 1,200 lettings and management agents nationwide who have signed up to the scheme. The logo was launched for lettings agents, by lettings agents following a number of high proile media cases where unscrupulous agents had absconded with tenant and landlord

funds. The aim of the SAFEagent scheme is to identify agents in Client Monday Protection Schemes and highlight the risks of using ‘uninsured’ agents. Nick Courtney, Managing Director of Courtney Green commented: “We want every tenant and landlord that we welcome through our doors to have peace of mind when it comes to client money protection and this is exactly what we can reinforce now

that we bear the SAFEagent logo.” Nick continued: “All agents regulated by NALS, the Law Society, ARLA, NAEA and RICS maintain and operate designated client accounts where clients’ money is held completely separate from the operating funds of the irm, so you should only look for an agent that can provide you with this assurance.” For more information on the SAFEagent campaign, please visit www.safeagents. co.uk.

Jaguar’s XF Sportbrake makes a debut The new Jaguar XF Sportbrake has been unveiled ahead of its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show and promises to be the most versatile Jaguar ever created. Sharing its underpinnings with the XF saloon, the Sportbrake’s overall length grows by just 5mm, its weight is down 70kg and its chassis structure matches the strength of the conventional XF. These characteristics mean the Sportbrake can closely match the acclaimed handling of the XF saloon yet offers a large and highly practical load space. Every panel on the XF Sportbrake, from the B-Pillar, heading towards the rear, is new. The strong silver signature line running the length of the car is extended while the C-Pillar is finished in gloss black, a trait shared with the XJ saloon. Slim rear light units extend into a strong chrome crossmember that dominates the rear of the car. The result is a car that blends style and function with the rear seat occupants benefitting from 48mm of extra rear headroom. The large, practical tailgate can be specified with power struts, opening to reveal a wide and highly versatile

load space. Measuring 550-litres with the rear seats up, the boot is framed by a set of useful cubby compartments. With the seats folded, the total volume grows to 1,675-litres. Practical touches are prevalent – and standard equipment – on the XF Sportbrake. Remote fold levers are mounted within the boot area to lower the rear seats – negating the need to stretch into the boot. Powerful LEDs throw a pool of light onto the ground when the boot is open while the tailgate itself features a soft close function, avoiding any requirement for it to be slammed. Set into the boot floor is a panel that splits into three sections to allow smaller loads to be neatly wedged and avoiding a precious or fragile cargo being thrown about. A tray mounted under the boot floor helps protect valuable items. Beneath the car there are extensive changes to the rear suspension. Selflevelling air suspension aids driving dynamics and means the Sportbrake can serve as an accomplished tow vehicle. Powering the XF Sportbrake will be a range of efficient yet powerful diesel engines in 2.2-litre four cylinder

and 3.0-litre six-cylinder form, each directing drive through the rear wheels via an advanced eight-speed automatic gearbox. A V8 petrol is also rumoured, but Jaguar are keeping their lips tightly shut on that. Prices and specifications will be announced nearer the time of the launch of the Sportbrake, set to take place in the third quarter of 2012,

everyone will have to be behind me in the queue to get their hands on the details. I love estate cars, my all-time favourite is the old Volvo V40, the way it looked good from pretty much any angle, and the profile view, avoiding looking like there was a wardrobe in the back, made for a great car. This Sportbrake harks back to those days, which really impresses

me, as most estates look great from the front, as they share their nose with their saloon equivalent, yet many others look like a rectangle has been grafted on to the rear. And the small desire from me, willing Jaguar to tackle Mercedes and BMW with their AMG and M estates? XFR Sportbrake anyone?

‘Shocked’ Langton is sacked James Herd Football

Hugo Langton has been sacked as Horsham manager – and says he found out who was replacing him from a player. A “very, very disappointed” Langton spoke to www.the-resident.co.uk on Wednesday evening at the end of his winless reign of 19 league matches. He said: “I found out from my goalkeeper that (Redhill manager) Simon Colbran was taking over. I’m disappointed because I’ve worked bloody hard and I have been planning ahead, making phone calls, getting people in for next season. “I was on the brink of making two big signings that would make a big difference. I’m disappointed because the board have told me that they back me, but they obviously have no conidence in me. “I’m very shocked. I wasn’t expecting it, but at the same time I appreciate this is football and it happens. I’ll get on with it. I’ll ind myself another job in time. “I hope the club back Simon Colbran. I hope he can turn the club into a success, but I believe he’ll only do that in the long term if he’s inancially backed properly.

“I’ve had to work on a very small budget. It’s very hard to compete. That’s why we’ve got young players, inexperienced players, all great lads with great futures, but they’re learning the game. “You can’t bring in experienced footballers and pay them £40 or £50 a week. “I’ve enjoyed myself, I’ve enjoyed the experience. I love Frank King to pieces. He’s one of the best people I’ve ever met and he’ll be a friend for life.

I believe I’m leaving ‘with great dignity and with my head held high

“I hope for him – because he is Mr Horsham – that the future is nice and rosy and I wish the club all the best. “I’ll use this experience positively, because if I’m honest with you I don’t think I’ll ever be at a football club again that’s in a similar position to this one. “I’ve tried to remain as positive as I can throughout and I believe I have. I believe that even though I’ve been sacked I’m leaving with great dignity and with my head held high. “The supporters have backed me.

They’ve never doubted me or given me a hard time. I thank them for that. “I want them to keep believing and keep backing whoever is out there wearing the shirt with pride. And keep supporting them, and keep eating their lard!” Ex-Worthing boss Colbran becomes Horsham’s fourth manager in less than a year – and the third this season after the departure of long-serving John Maggs last May. Justin Luchford left the club in October, claiming he had been unable to manage in the way he wanted. With only two league wins all season, both in August, the Hornets have picked up 11 points in 30 matches and are almost certain to inish bottom of the Ryman League Premier Division. Possibly the inal straw was their 4-1 beating at the Metropolitan Police on Saturday, when Langton accused some of his players of not hurting enough in defeat. Horsham chairman Kevin Borrett said: “I am immensely grateful to Hugo for his passion and commitment. Hugo has worked extremely hard coaching and expanding the squad as well as placing a strong emphasis on improved itness levels. “However, the club has failed to record a Ryman League win in 19 outings during his period in charge and, by

his own admission last weekend, now inds itself at a crossroads. “As the club prepares for next season, when it is expected to be competing at Ryman South level, the decision to appoint someone more local and with proven experience and a track record was compelling. “Simon has an excellent local track record, both as a player and football manager for teams across Sussex and Surrey. He has the opportunity to use the last eight weeks of the season to start to reshape the squad in a competitive environment.” Chief executive John Lines said: “I am terribly sorry to lose Hugo as he has put his heart and soul into his job and is a wonderful man and a very good coach. “After a long run of losing matches, the conidence of the team was at an all-time low and a defeatist mentality was setting in. “Going into the inal dozen games of the season being beaten week in and week out was not the right preparation for looking towards any kind of successful objective for next season. A radical change was needed. “We believe Simon has the knowledge, the skill, the enthusiasm and importantly the local contacts to take us into Division 1 South with the ambition to compete once again at a higher level.”

Tim’s double as Rovers reach inal Youth Football

Chesworth Rovers U11 will play Roffey Robins United U11 in the inal of the Heron Way Cup. Rovers overcame a resilient Upper Beeding U11 side, winning 4-1 thanks to two free-kicks by Tim Bennett, Jack Frankland’s strike and Josh Baker’s header. Max Furber (two), Ralph Robson (two), Morgan Spooner (penalty) and Kris Bicknell scored as Robins beat Steyning Strikers U11 6-0. Unbeaten Royal United U16 are chasing another double after beating Twin Oaks U16 to reach the inal of the Edwin Hill Cup. Jake Legrange scored the irst two goals before Tom Killner-Brown added two more and Callum McHale completed the scoring. Greg Gander was particularly impressive. Manager Richard Chaplin said: “For the boys to get through to the inal for the second year running is all due to their commitment, attitude and the great football they play.” Royals will face Dorking Saints U16, who edged out Roffey Robins Wanderers U16 3-2 despite Zak Comber’s double. Horsham U16 got the better of title rivals Hove Rivervale U16, winning 2-0 in Division 1 of the Sussex Sunday Youth League. The young Hornets played some ine football, but it took until the 75th

minute for Jake Legrange to open the scoring when he pounced on a rebound from Harry Smith’s shot. The excellent Ben Collier created the clincher with a driving run and cross, converted by Smith for a well-deserved birthday goal. Horsham Sparrows U16 fought back from 4-1 down to draw 4-4 with Albury Eagles U16 in the Horsham and District Youth League. Zac Chinn and Daniel Stutchbury

(two) scored for Sparrows before Toby Bridger grabbed a dramatic equaliser two minutes from time. Daniel Barna and Joe Clissold also impressed. Horsham U15 lost 1-0 to Worthing Rebels Blue U15 in the Arun and Chichester Youth League Cup semiinal, while Copthorne U15 beat Lower Beeding and Handcross Lions U15 5-1 in the Fred Sparks Cup semi-inal. the second half before Matt Streeter’s consolation goal. Aaron Pyzer was Lions’ man of the match. Ali Kerr’s volleyed goal was one of the highlights of Horsham U14’s 3-0 win at Eastbourne Town U14 in the Sussex Sunday Youth League. Liam Clarke and Nick Bristow also scored. Liberty Dove and Hannah Gardner’s goals helped Horsham Sparrows Girls U11 beat Worthing Divas U11 2-0. Ellie Hutchinson starred.

Do I want promotion? Andy Stonestreet www.northwestsussexseagulls.co.uk

Just under two weeks ago, I was on the North West Sussex Seagulls coach as we travelled back from ‘that match’ with Liverpool, not knowing what a 6-1 defeat might do to the players’ conidence and spirit. Two games and four points later, I think we know the answer. Nothing, well at least nothing to worry about. That heavy defeat at Anield could have inished our season, but as I write this column Albion are just six goals away from occupying sixth place in the Championship table and a play-off spot. Over the last few weeks, I have swung from wanting to be involved in the end-of-season drama that is the play-offs to not having anything to do with them. Having watched the boys put three past Ipswich without reply, applauded the ball skills of man of the match Abdul Razak, the goals of Ashley Barnes and the goal of birthday boy Craig Mackail-Smith, I’m now swinging towards the former. Before leaving home on Saturday, I was like that cat. No, not the Anield one, but the one on the proverbial hot tin roof. My long-suffering wife Clare (who knew nothing about football before we got together and who now holds whole football-related conversations with her mother Jill, again a football virgin until I came on the scene) knew I was a troubled man. Having gained that excellent point at Hull, Albion were in real danger of getting caught up in a push for promotion. Is that what I wanted? After talking to a number of fans, I knew I wasn’t alone in this confused state. Don’t get me wrong, I always want Albion to win, but Liverpool had highlighted the big gap between a good Championship side and a top Premier League side. They showed how much we will have to improve if, by some miracle, we get promoted at the end of this season. Could Albion really hope to compete? Would we do a Derby and manage only 11 points in a whole season in the top light? If that happened, how far back would it push chairman Tony Bloom’s long-term plans for the club I love? Gus would go, for sure. You, Clare and her mother will be happy to hear that my head has now cleared after the match on Saturday. I believe Albion would be good enough. We probably wouldn’t set the league alight, but we will survive if the miracle happens. In Gus I trust.

Look out for Mark 3 Palmer

William Palmer has joined HHC Motorsport for the 2012 Ginetta Junior Championship. Below: William with father Jonathan and team principal Charlie Kemp (right)

Southwater’s William Palmer is following in the slipstream of his father and brother by embarking on his own motorsport career. The son of former Formula 1 driver Jonathan, and younger brother of GP2 driver Jolyon, is gearing up for his first full season in the highly competitive Ginetta Junior Championship. William, 15, has signed with frontrunning team HHC Motorsport to contest the UK’s top junior series for drivers aged between 14 and 17, reaching speeds of up to 120 mph. Taking place over 20 rounds, the series accompanies the British Touring Car Championship at top circuits up and down the country, attracting large crowds and live television coverage. William debuted in the junior

series in August last year and later finished a best-yet eighth in his Hillspeed car at Brands Hatch. After successful tests with his new team, Palmer Jnr is looking forward to the start of the season at Brands on April 1 and has his sights on a top-six finish in the championship. He said: “I’m really excited to be doing my first full season of Ginetta Juniors with HHC Motorsport. I competed in a few races last year and learnt a lot. Now I’m looking to build on that experience this season.” Dad Jonathan said: “Ginetta Juniors is an excellent series. The cars look good, are safe, fast enough and reliable. “It’s also very competitive, so Will was inevitably towards the back of the field last year. However, he is very determined and has already proved quicker than me in his race car! “HHC Motorsport is a very nice, motivated team and I think top-six results are realistic this season.”

Horsham notched up a third consecutive win to maintain their promotion challenge. The ever-prolific Matt Hough opened the scoring five minutes into the game before Old Williamsonians’ goalkeeper was sent off for a dangerous tackle on John Burroughs. Unfazed by the resulting delay, 17-year-old Nathan Hill coolly flicked home the penalty to leave Horsham 2-0 up at the interval. Old Williamsonians scored soon

after the resumption, but Hill skilfully converted a corner and Hough found the net again to give Horsham a 4-1 lead 10 minutes from time. The visitors conceded twice as they tired but were not to be denied a well-earned victory. Captain Burroughs said: “This was a very satisfying win for us. Because

Cricket England international Luke Wright has signed a new contract to stay with Sussex until at least the end of the 2015 season. The swashbuckling all-rounder, who joined the club in 2003, told The Resident: “I have been lucky to win many trophies with Sussex and look forward to helping them towards more success. “Myself and my family are very happy here and I have always been greatly supported by the club and its fans.” Mark Robinson, Sussex’s professional cricket manager, said: “We are delighted that Luke Wright has committed the next four seasons to the club. “He has been with us since he was 19 and has become an integral part of the squad both on and off the pitch. The way he plays his cricket excites crowds and makes him a dangerous player to play against.” Horsham have signed 21-year-old all-rounder Hisam Ul-Haq, who scored 776 runs and took 28 wickets for Three Bridges last season. Delighted captain Craig Gallagher said: “This is a great signing. He’s a top performer with both bat and ball, exactly what we need.” Horsham still hope to secure an overseas player after a move for Kiwi Willie Lonsdale unexpectedly fell through.

Youth Cricket

Horsham U16 (15) were heavily beaten by Three Bridges U16 (122-3) in the iDentliam Colts Indoor League at Tanbridge House School. Billingshurst U16 (103-4) beat Pulborough U16 (77-4, Ed Kilner 44*) and Horsham Trinity U16 (117-5) beat Southwater U16 (86-2). Horsham Trinity U12 (112-1) beat Steyning U12 (94-5), Lindfield U12 (144-2) beat Steyning (94-5) and Lindfield (82-2) beat Horsham Trinity (81).

of injuries and other absences we only had 11 available so were unable to rotate and rest players throughout the match. “Given the circumstances, this was our best result of the season.” Horsham remain fourth, one point behind their nearest rivals and with a game in hand. Horsham Ladies slipped to a 2-1 home defeat against St Albans Ladies, despite a first-minute goal by Steph Dent. Horsham defended tigerishly and maintained good possession but were again unable to convert a series of promising attacks.

St Albans levelled after 20 minutes and scored against the run of play in the second half after both teams had goals disallowed. Coach Warren Gilmour said: “We scored early and competed well, but a soft goal let them back in. “We can still avoid relegation if we score from the chances we’re creating. We need two wins and our double-header at the weekend is vital for us.” Horsham’s men host bottom side Kings Alleyns tomorrow (Saturday). The ladies face Harleston Magpies in Norfolk tomorrow and Chelmsford at home on Sunday.

Horsham Blue Star’s Jade Brewster, from Broadbridge Heath, narrowly failed to add the national U17 indoor title to her South of England pole vault crown. Competing at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, Brewster entered the event at 3m and led after first-time clearances to 3.30m. The Tanbridge House School pupil, who celebrated her 15th birthday last week, cleared 3.40m at her third attempt but had to settle for the silver medal.
