One hundred and twentyone years after his great great grandfather Sir Edmund Loder bought the gardens, Tom Loder walks up the driveway of Leonardslee in Lower Beeding for one last time. Having attracted huge numbers of visitors in the last three months, the gardens opened to the public for the last time on Wednesday. The gardens and the mansion house have both been bought by a mystery millionaire, and although the new
buyer is likely to maintain the gardening staff, as well as the wallabies, it is unlikely that Leonardslee will be run as a tourist attraction again. The family made the decision to sell the gardens as it became apparent that the four grown up children of Robin Loder did not share his passion for flora and fauna. The gardens were sold in February for about £5million, and recently the same buyer purchased the mansion house for about £3 million. The Loder family had sold the house in the 1980s in order to invest in the gardens. The final season has been one of the most successful in recent memory, up by about 40% on recent years due to the great weather. For the full story see Pages 10-11
