Council chiefs are on the verge of axing the annual funfair in the Carfax, sparking a furious response from residents. The Resident understands Horsham District Council is considering scaling down the traditional October festival, which includes the funfair, and/or moving some activities from the Carfax to The Forum. These options have not been officially confirmed, but the council says it is planning other events next year and may need to save money in October. Jeweller and pawnbroker Dominic Sakakini, based in the Carfax, told The Resident: “It’s 19 years of history, but the council is trying to wipe it out. All the council seem to say is ‘we haven’t got any money’.

is nothing better than seeing excited and happy children. What next? Will the council hire the child catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?” Others on Facebook were equally dismayed and forthright. John O’Sullivan commented: “The council is full of coffin-dodgers who have absolutely no idea how to run things. “Get rid of the lot of them. Start afresh with new people who want to move this town forward.” ‘Wendylady Inkpin’ added: “They would

rather see all the businesses close in Horsham and it become a ghost town. “All you are meant to do is eat in all the restaurants and drink loads of coffee. The council never promote anything unless it is in their interest.” Siobhan Blakey said: “One of the advantages of living here with a young family is events like this. Perhaps the councillors would care to visit the local primary and infant schools in person and explain to the children.” Continued on Page 4

New homes in Southwater this week moved a big step closer to reality, despite criticism of a council officer’s report. A Horsham District Council planning committee debated Bovis Homes’ scheme to build 131 houses, including 52 affordable homes, east of Turners Close and east/south of Millfield. Rod Brown, head of planning and environmental services, had asked the committee to delegate the decision to him “with a view to approval”, subject to further detailed negotiations and the completion of a legal agreement. But councillors said they still had unanswered questions, including exactly how changes made by the developers had overcome objections to a previous scheme for 133 homes. They voted to support Mr Brown’s recommendation, but only with the significant proviso that any unresolved issues be brought back to the committee. Five councillors, including the three members for Southwater ward, will keep an eye on negotiations.

What do you think?

Cllr Claire Vickers, chairman of the council and Southwater councillor, told the committee: “There are still a number of major issues which need to be resolved. “I’m absolutely amazed that the county surveyor has no major concerns about the access. “I know how busy the junction with the A24 can be, especially in rush hour, but it will be difficult to refuse this based on access if we don’t have the support of the county council. “I would like to see a much greater buffer zone between the houses in Millfield and the proposed development. “There are some things in its favour, but I have no doubt this will have some impact on the existing residents.” Cllr David Holmes, Lib Dem group leader and Horsham Park councillor, said: “I’m left with too many doubts at this stage. I don’t like to agree delegation (to a council officer) with a view to approval with so many issues apparently outstanding. They could get fudged rather than addressed.”

More than 20 life-size mascots are set to join Pudsey Bear in the Carfax on Sunday, thanks to the Rotary Club of Horsham and Horsham District Council. Pudsey, mascot of the BBC’s Children in Need appeal, will hold four short shows – at 1.30pm, 2.15pm, 3pm and 3.45pm – so that everyone gets a chance to see him. Other activities will include face painting from 12.30pm and a surprise. A spokesman for the district council said: “The council’s town centres

team have been actively involved in working with Horsham Rotary to secure the appearance of as many mascots as possible. Some great contacts have been made which it is hoped will lead to mascots featuring more widely in Horsham’s events.” A Pudsey insider said: “A little bird has told us that Pudsey’s friends at the BBC have agreed to film part of the event for showing on Children in Need night, November 18.” For more information about Children in Need or to donate, visit www. bbc.co.uk/pudsey/donate

Expect a scrum for saucy calendar Matthew James News Editor

matthew@the-resident.co.uk

Here’s Horsham rugby player Will Johnson as most of you will never have seen him before. He may be more accustomed to playing scrum half or fullback at Hammerpond Road, but Will was not shy in coming forward for a good cause – the Everyman appeal for research into prostate and testicular cancer. Twelve Horsham players appear topless in a new calendar, most wearing only underwear. Mr December

Liam Yeates has even less on, though a rugby ball is strategically positioned to make sure it’s all done in the best possible taste. Will, 23, a claims adviser for Axa, said: “It was good fun and I would recommend other clubs do something similar. “There’s quite a lot of banter flying around among the lads. I think it makes the ugly ones feel a bit left out.” The calendar was the brainchild of controversial comedian John O’Sullivan, the rugby club’s self-styled “saviour”, who enlisted the help of Bel Signs and local photographer Toby Phillips. Mr O’Sullivan told The Resident: “Lots of calendars, especially local ones, are so naff and low brow. I wanted to do something that would appeal to people not connected to the rugby club.

“Everyman is a great charity. I have a close friend who had testicular cancer which only got caught quickly because he checked himself. “He is okay now, but this is all about raising awareness, trying to

encourage young men to check themselves. Sometimes it’s all too easy to assume that just because you’re young it won’t happen to you, but it does. “The players were very keen to do this. The calendar is quite mild compared to their naked activities on a club tour. “I won’t be happy until we raise thousands for this great cause and I will be sending the lads out to sell, sell, sell at night, mainly to tipsy women. “We had a competition between the lads to see who would appear on the front cover and Will Johnson won. You can see why. Not as good as my body though.” Cynics might suggest we have already seen more than enough of Mr O’Sullivan’s body, but no doubt many of our readers would happily see more of Will as a model. And they might get their wish. Will says girlfriend Jade is “pretty impressed” by his contribution to the calendar and he would be happy to

It will be available at The Candy Box in town and at other venues to be announced. For more information about Everyman, visit www.everyman-campaign. org

BBC TV presenter Nick Baker was guest speaker at a meeting of the Sussex Wildlife Trust, based in Henfield. Mr Baker, presenter of The Really Wild Show, said: “What we need are mentors – people with a passion – to get families out in the countryside. “The Wildlife Trust is one of the most important mentoring organisations for the younger generation, creating lifelong memories of close encounters with nature.” Petra Billings, from Steyning, has been appointed landscape project officer for the trust.

Shedding light Cllr Morwen Millson, leader of the Lib Dem group on West Sussex County Council, says she will be monitoring SSE’s street lighting contract. She said: “We will be keeping a close eye on this contract. In the meantime I would urge residents to report any faults with street lights, illuminated signs or bollards by telephoning 0800 0482435 or via the link on the county council’s website. “The contractor is required to repair the faulty appliance within three days, unless a spare part is needed or the fault is down to the supply cable. “If you have reported a fault and it has not been repaired within three days, please contact your county councillor or me.”

Jayne Collins implored the council to “get a grip” and added: “A good idea would be maybe cut the council tax if they want to take everything away from us.” A council spokesman said: “The council is adding two events to next year’s already busy annual event calendar, making at least 10 events in total for Horsham town centre next year. “Next year’s council-run extra events are specific to 2012 and include a Diamond Jubilee Tea Party celebration in Horsham town centre on June 4 and an Olympic celebration as part of the Sparks in the Park event on July 15. All of these additional initiatives will put extra pressure on the council event team’s resources. “We are however impressed with the amount of support that has been shown to keep the Town Centre Festival in place and we will work with partners to try to secure its future next year.

“Issues have been raised about the Carfax and Bishopric markets being displaced by one-off events. We are looking into how we can reduce the impact of this on local traders while maintaining the successful events programme for which Horsham is now well known.” Cllr Jonathan Chowen, from the council’s Cabinet, said before the storm of protest: “This is the 19th year that Horsham has hosted this popular half-term festival, which is designed to offer fun, low-cost entertainment for families as well as bringing in extra visitors. “Horsham is now established as a town that offers that little bit extra for visitors and our work with Horsham Rotary Club’s Trick or Treat Trail is an entertaining way of encouraging people to discover town centre shops. “By working in partnership with local businesses and charities we can provide value-for-money events which benefit all who visit, work in and live in Horsham’s busy town centre.”

Display goes with a bang Slower cuts in youth services seem likely

www.ianpearsonphotography.com

This was the spectacular scene at Horsham Sports Club, Cricketfield Road, on Saturday as fireworks fans enjoyed an early display. And the fun will continue with other displays across the district this

weekend. Horsham Rugby Club, Hammerpond Road, will open its gates at 5pm (tomorrow) before ‘lift-off’ at 7.30pm. Admission is £7 for adults, £3 for

under-16s and free for children aged two and younger. A family ticket, for up to four people, is £17. Tickets are available from The Candy Box and Henry Adams in the Carfax.

Cuts to youth services in West Sussex may be phased over four years, not three. The longer period for reductions will be considered by a county council committee today (Friday) before Cllr Peter Evans, council Cabinet member, takes a decision this month. A report to councillors says £2 million is due to be saved from the county’s youth budget by the 20134 financial year, but Cllr Evans has asked for more time “to develop voluntary community sector capacity and capabilities to take on services”. Cllr Evans said: “This is not about a change of direction because we have to live within our means and we cannot afford to continue with the current level of service. I must make that clear. “We must use our resources where they will have the most impact. That will be based around targeted services focused on those young people whose lives are in crisis and turmoil. “Our review of the service has already saved £2 million and there are some excellent examples of local communities and voluntary groups coming forward to get more involved with youth projects. “For example, 20 village-based youth clubs have been transferred solely to voluntary and community sector provision, and we have developed training and information booklets for organisations interested in taking over youth work. “Phasing-in the budget reductions over a longer period will maximise those opportunities as we work with organisations that want to play a role

in maintaining youth services in their area.” Liberal Democrats on the Conservative-controlled county council described Cllr Evans’ remarks as “a spectacular U-turn”, despite his claim to the contrary. Cllr Morwen Millson, Lib Dem group leader, said: “The Liberal Democrats are delighted that the Cabinet member has admitted changes may be implemented over four years, not three as agreed in the budget that the Tories forced through. “Taking so much money out of the service over three years required enormous and extremely rapid change in the Youth Service and risked services in many areas disappearing completely.” Cllr Millson, who represents Horsham Riverside, added: “We remain concerned about the ability of the voluntary sector to fill the gaps in the long term, but there is much more chance of this succeeding if more time is allowed before the money is withdrawn. “Back in February, when the council debated the budget for the current financial year, Liberal Democrats argued that savings should be made over four years. “The Tories were adamant they could be delivered in three. I hate to say that we told them so, but we did!”

The councillor, who wishes to remain anonymous in the media, aims to raise £500 towards the £10,000 target for three-year-old William Sainsbury, from Worthing. William will be in hospital for at least two months, with regular follow-up appointments at Great Ormond Street Hospital or Manchester and a special environment when he comes home. The councillor said: “A relatively modest donation from just 1,000 readers should help give William a much better quality of life.” For more information or to donate, visit http://williamsfund.blogspot. com

More than 60,000 young people across the UK took part in an online poll to decide which issues will be debated. The urban forest came under the spotlight when the South East Region Tree Wardens’ Forum was held at County Hall North, Horsham. About 90 tree wardens from the region attended the event and Cllr Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, planted a tree to mark the occasion. She said: “This year marks the 20th anniversary of the West Sussex Tree Wardens’ Network, so I’m delighted we were able to host the regional forum. “Tree wardens play a vital role in helping our communities conserve and enhance our local trees and woods. We’re always on the lookout for more tree wardens to come forward. It’s a varied role and can include organising a tree trail, putting on an exhibition, planting trees and hedges or being the local point of contact for all tree issues.” Pauline Buchanan Black, from the Tree Council, said: “Tree wardening is the embodiment of the government’s Big Society plans to engage more people in becoming community organisers and to offer them training. “As tree wardens already fit the bill, they are a thriving example of what the coalition government wishes to see on a wider scale. The tree warden scheme is stronger than ever before in urban areas – in communities which particularly need trees and the benefits they bring.” For more information, phone 01243 642119 or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk

Walking straight into the road With reference to the campaign to stop speeding traffic in Southwater (The Resident, October 21), why should the responsibility always be put on the motorist to slow down below the official speed limit? No one ever suggests that pedestrians of all ages should refresh their knowledge of, or learn about, the Highway Code (Kerb Drill in my childhood, Green Cross Code in my children’s). As a non-driver, keen walker

and alert passenger, I have noticed on many occasions pedestrians walking straight into the road without even pausing and have observed them ignoring pedestrian crossings. It’s not always the motorist that’s in the wrong. It’s also pedestrians who do not use the brains they were born with to keep them safe on the road. District Council. It is unlikely that any other local community organisation will easily assemble a business plan and 200-page full feasibility study that was sensibly required by the original group of councillors. Nor will any community organisation other than ourselves easily produce the required level of detail, quality assurance and sustainability on an urgent basis, given that the building has lain empty for two years. Decay and vandalism are obvious threats to this historic building, as well as any hastily put together community plan failing. Why should the Liberal Democrat group of councillors, or indeed any Horsham taxpayer, want to look any further than the trust’s readily available proposal?

Taking up Cllr David Holmes’ call to community groups to take on the Horsham Old Town Hall (The Resident, October 28), it seems that the Blue Flash Music Trust plan still meets the vast majority of Horsham residents’ aspirations. Affordable bookings by the community are a fundamental part of this. It is also a financially sustainable proposal, put together by qualified professionals, which was closely scrutinised, endorsed and recommended by the Old Town Hall advisory group of which Cllr Holmes was a member. Since that time, the trust has maintained an unblemished track record of delivering successful arts and music events, often in conjunction with Horsham

Memories of Electric Light Works Sixty years separate the two photographs of a little-known corner of Horsham (The Resident, October 21). It is an area off New Street which in 1951 comprised a cluster of mainly small back-to-back houses dominated by what was referred to locally as the Electric Light Works – its main feature being a tall, square chimney. The Works supplied Horsham with electricity and was located in Stanley Street, now Stanley Walk. On the right of the 1951 photograph, one can spot Knight’s grocery stores. Note the Lyons Tea enamel sign over the shop front. And the tall house on the left of the picture was occupied, as I

recall, by a Mr Redford. During the early 1960s, the whole area was redeveloped to make way for housing. I have mixed childhood memories of the Electric Light Works as it was here that many people brought their much-loved pets to be put to sleep. I can only recall one veterinary practice in Horsham in 1951. It should be remembered that in those days of post-war austerity, pets were rarely inoculated and pampered on luxury cat and dog food as they are today. That is not to say that pets were neglected, but the fact that food rationing did not end until 1954 has to be borne in mind. Barbara Worley Ayshe Court Drive, Horsham

Children’s chance to light up Piries Place Peace Chen (right) with Emily Boardman and Emma Boyns

Youngsters are being given the chance to switch on the Christmas lights in Piries Place on Saturday, November 12 (4.30pm).

Peace & Co bowl them over Peace Chen, from Horsham, has helped produce a calendar and Christmas card for the Sussex Cricket in the Community Trust (SCCT). The Sussex Cricket Board, working alongside Worldwide Volunteering, launched the Shark Apprentice Scheme, enabling young people to apply to become volunteer fundraisers for the trust. Peace, Emily Boardman, Emma Boyns and Yasmeen Hazy were successful with their idea and have seen it turned into reality in time for Christmas. David Robinson, volunteer cricket co-ordinator, said: “We aimed for young people to work in groups similar to the TV programme The Apprentice, designing and executing a

project to ultimately raise funds for SCCT. “Those chosen in the first instance had the chance to pitch their ideas to a panel at The PROBIZ County Ground in the Summer, before going on to deliver the proposed projects. “The programme was designed to be fun and exciting as well as a chance for the youngsters to prove their capabilities and learn from working in groups and with other young people.” Amy Holtz, of Worldwide Volunteering in the South East, said: “We are delighted to be working with the Sussex Cricket Board and such an innovative scheme. It is amazing what young people can achieve when they are given opportunities to volunteer.” For more information about SCCT, visit http://scct.webplus.net

Graham Russell, of Aurac Sound & Vision, told The Resident: “We are running a competition for under 14-year-olds to turn on the lights. “All they need to do is draw or paint a picture of Mr Pirie, the man with the donkey, and hand it in to any of the Piries Place shops by Wednesday, November 9. “The winner gets to press the button! There will also be a chance to win a Waitrose hamper.” William Pirie, after whom Piries Place is named, was the head teacher at Collyer’s from 1822 to 1869. A sculpture by Lorne McKean features him with a donkey and cart. Mr Russell added: “After the success of the last Big Switch On, all of the stores in Piries Place are looking forward to an even better event this year. “There will be lots going on, including live music and food stalls, and Santa may even make an appearance. “There will also be a collection for Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, who will be providing a choir, so we encourage people to give their support to this very worthwhile

cause. “Piries Place is a collection of independent and very different specialist shops. It is really nice this time of year when we all come together to put on this fantastic and enjoyable event.”

From The Weald to Westminster Katherine Dean, from Pulborough, spent three days of work experience in the office of Nick Herbert, the MP for Arundel and South Downs who is also the police minister. Katherine, 17, an A-level student at The Weald School, Billingshurst, saw the House of Commons and House of Lords in session, helped the MP’s staff with constituency work and met civil servants at the Home Office. She said: “Working in Mr Herbert’s office was such a privilege. It

was fascinating to see the level of response, care and commitment towards each personal issue raised by constituents, and how local government interlinks with Parliament.” Mr Herbert said: “It was a real pleasure to meet Katherine and be able to give her work experience in my office. We receive a lot of applications for work experience, but I like to give priority to young people who live in my constituency. “My team really enjoyed Katherine’s company and I’m glad she found it a useful experience.”

We’ll shave again, some Sony day Staff at the Sony Centre, Swan Walk, have become Mo Bros by starting a hairy fundraising event. Store manager Rob Page, assistant manager Chris Wright, Phil Cowey and Dipesh Patel are taking part in the Movember challenge, growing moustaches throughout November as part of an international campaign. The aim is to raise money and awareness of men’s health issues such as prostate and testicular cancer. The Sony Centre in Horsham, which will stage activity days throughout the month, hopes to raise at least £1,000 through sponsorship and a raffle. Prizes include a PlayStation 3, an iPod/iPhone dock and a video MP3 Walkman. Mr Page said: “All the guys in the store are 20 or 30-somethings. It’s a good idea to raise awareness because men don’t tend to go to the doctor. “I’ve never had a proper moustache. I had a goatee beard when I was younger, but I’ve never actually gone for the full moustache. “All of us here have significant others who have raised an eyebrow at what we’re doing this month, but they know it’s for a good cause.” The Movember website, uk. movember.com, says: “Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking

billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words, they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often-ignored issue of men’s health. “Movember will continue to work to change established habits and attitudes, to educate men about the health risks they face and get them to act on that knowledge, increasing the chances of early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.”

Business Fat Face is on the move A new Fat Face store will open in Horsham’s Swan Walk shopping centre this Saturday, November 5. The men and women’s outdoor clothing store is moving to larger premises. It was formerly positioned at the end of West Street, near McDonald’s. Head of property, Tim Moody, said: “We are very excited about relocating to a store that will be more than twice the size of our existing store in a town which is very important to us.” Fat Face was founded in 1988 by two friends who designed and sold Tshirts in the evening, while spending their days skiing in the Alps.

Victoria Godfrey, manager of the charity shop, said: “We are very lucky that the Horsham people have supported us by donating such lovely clothing. “We have been saving the party bits for a couple of months now and have some really beautiful dresses. Foot spa business bites back James Hood Business Editor

james@the-resident.co.uk

The owners of the Feet First Foot Spa in Swan Walk shopping centre, have hit back at claims made in the national press that the Garra Ruffa fish pedicures can be dangerous to customers’ health. National tabloid newspapers sensationally reported that the tiny fish, which nibble the dead skin on customer’s feet can transmit viruses such as Hepatitis C and HIV.

as Turkey and the Middle East, had become a national craze. According to the owners there has not been one case reported of a virus being transmitted. But spas across the country are suffering as a result of the latest reports. The Feet First Foot Spa in Horsham has seen a significant drop in

customers since the reports in the press but owner Alan Molloy believes it has all been blown out of proportion. He said: “The press has fabricated much of what was said in the health agency’s report and have frightened people into thinking they will catch something from this treatment. When

it actual fact, there is more chance of catching the Hepatitis or HIV viruses from playing contact sports! “This industry employs a lot of people now that it has taken off so well. But we have had to make two staff members redundant and have even had customers return vouchers they had bought. In my opinion the press has been very unfair and irresponsible with their claims.”

The report by the Health Protection Agency gives advice on the measures that spas can take to ensure their facilities are safe for people to use. The Fish First Feet Spa uses glass tanks, which reduce the amount of bacteria that can grow in the tanks. They also use UV filters, which kills any bacteria. Alan added: “It is unfair that businesses like ours, which have made the health and safety of both our customers and the fish a priority since the very beginning are now suffering because of these claims.”

The reports followed guidelines issued by the government’s Health Protection Agency, which stated that the risks ‘could not be completely ruled out but were low’. The trend, which has been a treatment for softer, more attractive feet for hundreds of years in places such

How to build your successful business into a successful brand Exclusive excerpts from Dee Blick’s best-selling book, The Ultimate Small Business Marketing Book continue with part two of Chapter 5 Consistency Most of us are creatures of habit. There are reasons why we buy our clothes from the same outlets and why we prefer to meet friends at our favourite coffee bar. We feel comforted and secure in the knowledge that by repeating our actions, we’re going to enjoy the same experience every time. We like our loyalty to be rewarded with good feelings and great experiences. Businesses that become successful brands understand the importance of delivering a consistent and positive customer experience. These businesses make it their mission to ensure that each customer has an enjoyable experience regardless of when, how or where they come into contact with the company brand. So your favourite coffee shop is likely to offer more than simply selling good coffee. The atmosphere is likely to be warm and convivial, and the staff welcoming and friendly. Perhaps they will have made the effort to learn your name and know your preferred coffee choice. And should you ever spill your coffee, they replace it without question or charge. They will have recognised that the taste of their coffee alone is not enough to turn you into a regular customer. There are, of course, always exceptions to this example of a customerdriven business. Those brands that

concentrate on delivering their services or products at the lowest possible price often forego the niceties that result in an improved experience. In those cases, customers are largely willing to lower their expectations in exchange for a very low price. But most of the time, customers want it all – value, first-class service and a consistently great experience. Building consistency into your business Identify the interactions that a customer has with your business at each stage of their relationship with you. These are known as your customer touch points. Review how your business performs at each of these touch points. Many businesses tend to focus on delivering positive experiences in two key areas - recruiting new customers, and delivery. Other areas, such as after-care and building the relationship after the sale can be neglected to some extent. Consequently, inconsistencies can creep in and sabotage what has been a positive experience to that point. You may find that this exercise reveals that your business is one of those that is over-delivering in some areas, and under-delivering in others. Could this be a good time to revisit Chapter 4 and whip your survey into shape? Once you have identified the touch points, group them into the following

categories: • The prospecting stage • The sign up stage • The delivery stage • The immediate post-delivery stage • Ongoing relationship building Having done this, identify within each category how many times a customer interacts with your business. Can you see any inconsistencies in the quality of the service they are receiving? Does the speed and courtesy of your response to e-mails and phone calls vary depending on how busy you are? Customers will ultimately become disenchanted with your business if they can’t be sure what to expect from you each time. This will also make them reluctant to recommend you. Similarly, your business will experience fluctuating degrees of success with new prospects if you are quick to respond on some occasions but are impossible to get hold of at other times. If you employ people, check that there are no inconsistencies of service delivery within your team. Put your customer touch points under the microscope and evaluate whether each one delivers a

Having a big dog is no big deal thanks to new biz If you have a big dog, you probably know that finding specialist toys, gifts and accessories for them (not to mention carrying their food home) can be tricky. But an online business, which was set up last year, allows you to order products especially for larger dogs either on the website or over the phone and have them delivered right to your door. Based in Horsham, Big Dog World sells everything your pooch could need, including food, coats, beds, harnesses and plenty more. The company was created by Neil Stanton, who has his own big dog and found it difficult to find everything he needed in one place.

When we got our own ‘dog, it was difficult to

find the items we wanted in the right size

He said: “When we got our own dog, it was difficult to find the items we wanted in the right size! Plus, it was a bit of a pain having to lug really large bags of food in and out of the car. So, I thought that it was time for a

specialist website – just for big dogs.” The online and telephone business has been a success so far, with customers saying they like the convenience of having a range of products for their dogs delivered to them. Neil added: “We’ve had customers tell us that they really value the fact that we deliver to their door. The success of the business is also down to our exceptional customer service,

and reasonable prices – we’re a lot cheaper than most high street pet shops.” Big Dog World won the 2011 Surrey Young Biz of the Year award and is one of the highest rated online pet shops. In addition, 100% of their customers online would recommend them to a friend. For more information visit www. bigdogworld.co.uk

Making improvements at home? Don’t overlook the architect

Hiring a professional to project manage your own building work can reduce your costs, and stress, in the long run, says a Horsham-based architect An architect has set up a new consultancy business in Horsham that could save you time, money and unwanted hassle next time you embark on any improvements to your home or property. Inigo Aranguena has 15 years’ experience in the industry and has spent his career advising private clients on their designs, renovations or construction work alongside builders and other contractors. There is no restriction on the size of property the architect will work on and he believes that the work he does can benefit anyone, regardless of their budget. “No matter what the size of your project, the services of an architect can be well worth it. And it can be really important for making sure that everything is done well. When you sell your home, you recruit the help of an estate agent, so why not get a professional in to help with something as important as changes to your existing home?” He said. Inigo says that often the services of an architect are considered to be an extravagant cost that people don’t want to pay, without realising that in the long run it can make a project more efficient and costeffective. He said: “If you have an architect working with your best interests at heart, it can save you a lot of time and money. It will mean that any construction or improvements made to your home will be overseen

A loft conversion designed by Inigo

by a professional, making the whole process easier. “An architect can give you more ideas and help you solve any problems that arise, not to mention acting as a completely impartial project manager, who is independent from any contractors that you use.” The introduction and use of new 3D technology, which Inigo is trained to use, can also help save you time and money when it comes to making changes to a property as it allows you to see what the final result will be. Inigo added: “These days you can see if there is something you don’t like before work has even begun. Whereas if you go ahead and start work without the help of an architect or their designs, it could be too late to change your mind if you don’t like what you see.”

There’s more to it than ‘drawing diagrams and knocking down walls ’

The real benefit of having an architect work with you on improvements to your property lies in the fact that it is about more that simple building work. Inigo believes that the work he does is about understanding how people live their lives and helping them improve their lives by improving their

environment. He said: “What I do is listen to people. It’s not just about people having a bigger kitchen, but about where clients like to spend time with their family, or where they like to eat their cereal in the morning, etc. There’s more to it than drawing diagrams and knocking down walls. I’m passionate about using my skills and knowledge to improve people’s lives, not just their homes.”

Tell Wolves Tales take top spot in Battle of the Bands final Danny Randon Music Reporter

the-resident.co.uk/entertainment

This year’s Battle of the Bands started at the beginning of October, with three weekly heats held at The Chameleon Club, Horsham. From those, and the 17 bands that competed, six lucky acts reached the grand final at Horsham’s Carfax Bandstand on October 28. With the stage set and some fine prizes at stake, the pressure was on for Brand New Start to open the show in style. Although playing without their guitarist, who was mysteriously absent for their performance, this (temporary) three-piece’s folk-rock tunes proved to be delightful and endearing. “I’m pretty relaxed about tonight”,

said One Less Than Perfect’s singer Laura Jones, prior to One Less Than Perfect’s performance, before bassist Freddie Parker interjected, “the rest of us are really excited!” This Billingshurst quintet, who snatched the silver medal at heat one of the competition, took to the stage amidst a large fanbase, who supported the band throughout their feelgood, head-nodding rock numbers, yet sometimes seemed unpolished. Although there is room for improvement with One Less Than Perfect, they left the stage to rapturous applause, and still a clear shot for the top prize. Next to take to the stage were Tell Wolves Tales, the champions of round 2 of the battle, who, although having only started to make an impact on the local scene earlier this year with their high octane rock ‘n’ roll, also

performed to a vast array of supporters. Such hard work paid off, evidently, as timings were nailed with a tight rhythm section and wailing guitar licks were pulled off with intensity.

One Less Than Perfect

Photos by Aby-Joanne Russell

It was only then for the proceedings to be relentlessly continued by Gutter Fly, who were before seen blowing the audience away at heat two earlier this month, and therefore attaining second place and their welldeserved slot in the final. Truly looking the part with big hair and more denim than a Levi’s stockroom, this five-piece leapt headfirst into their set in an eruption of crashing drums, powerful vocals and awe-inspiring guitar shreds and squeals. Of course, the evening would be somewhat tedious without some variety, and so came the arrival of reunited ska-punk troupe Used Inc., who ended up finishing in second place in heat three. Once all of the bands had performed, nothing more could be done to decide their fate in the competition; out of those six bands, only one could leave victorious and with the title of ‘Horsham’s Best Band’. It was eventually decided by the panel of judges that third place would be awarded to Moments Too Late: “It was a honour to play in this competition, let alone to win third place!” the band exclaimed, obviously chuffed, “We’re so happy!” Soon after, the runners-up were announced as Gutter Fly, who said: “We’re so very pleased - it was great to play tonight, and I think we’ve left with some new fans, which is always a bonus!” The podium was then cleared for Mandy Ansell, Chairwoman of the Horsham District Live Music Alliance, who proceeded to open the golden envelope with the winning band’s name inside, “Tell Wolves Tales”, she said. The band said: “Like we said, it’s about the music; winning titles and trophies has nothing to do with any of it, but this is so fantastic!” And so that is it: the originals section Horsham Battle Of The Bands has come to an end for another year; all that remains is the covers heat of the competition on November 6, and the acoustic/songwriters heat on the November 13. The battle is still far from over. Horsham Battle Of The Bands 2011 is supported by Funktion One Research and Weltons Brewery.

Humour and hope from The Help A heartwarming tale of class divide and friendship is just one of the Capitol’s must-see movies this week The number one New York Times best selling book by Kathryn Stockett is brought to life by an ensemble cast of hugely talented actresses. Emma Stone takes the lead and the film also stars Academy Award-nominated Viola Davis (Best Supporting Actress, Doubt, 2008), Octavia Spencer and Bryce Dallas Howard. The Help is an inspirational, courageous and empowering story about very different, extraordinary women in the South of America in

the1960s. Despite a prominent race divide, a group of women build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project. One woman decides to write a book from the perspective of the black maids in the area. The project breaks all of society’s rules at the time and puts them all at risk. The heartwarming film is filled with poignancy, humour and hope. Showing at The Capitol until Thursday, November 10.

The next best thing to a live opera experience Dead good thriller live at The Capitol If you love a good psychological thriller, you’ll love Dead Reckoning – put together by none other than BAFTA award-winning writer Eric Chappell, whose previous work includes TV sitcoms Rising Damp and Only When I Laugh. When the mysterious Mr Todd arrives at artist Tony Reed’s house to talk about the murder that has left Reed a broken man, Tony and his second wife Megan find themselves entering a terrifying nightmare from which there seems no escape. This is comedy writer Chappell’s first thriller. Despite this, his tantalising story will draw you right in as it twists and turns, tugs at your emotions and keeps you guessing from start to finish. Directed by Malcolm Eynon and Produced by Outloud Productions,

a professional company based in Leigh-on-Sea. See it at The Capitol in the Studio on Tuesday, November 8 and

Wednesday, November 9 at 7.30pm. For tickets visit www.thecapitolhorsham.com or call the Box Office on 01403 750220.

Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi leads an all-star cast featuring Jay Hunter Morris in his first Met performances of the title role, one of the most challenging in the entire operatic canon. Deborah Voigt returns as the warrior maiden Brünnhilde and Bryn Terfel is the mysterious Wanderer, while Patricia Bardon is the ancient earth goddess Erda. Gerhard Siegel and Eric Owens are the nefarious brothers Mime and Alberich.

I fully applaud this trend of creating dramatic and fun characters and I was cheered on Sunday morning to spot a rather jaded tiger limping its way across Horsham Park, a little worse for wear. It seems this is just the start of the silly season for sporting fancy dress. It will not be long before we seeing the annual Children in Need campaign launch, carte blanche for men to sport fairy costumes and women to dress up to the nines. Visiting a local bank last week was made all the jollier as all the staff sported varying shades of pink to support a charity event. At a time when almost anything to do with banks is a bit gloomy, it was heartening to be entertained, although red might have been a more appropriate choice of colour! All children love to dress up and most households have a dressingup box which can be brought out on wet and gloomy days, guaranteed to cheer up everyone. The appeal of dressing up is that it takes us out of our routine world and connects us with our childhood world where anything is possible. Give it a try on charity days and you

will see how much goodwill it generates. We will soon be in the run-up to the panto season, which offers another glorious dressing-up occasion with men bedecked in huge frocks, layers of petticoats, extreme makeup and inflated candy-floss wigs. The contestants of a popular television dancing show also know how to create dramatic and exciting costumes for their performances and I must admit to a bit of costume envy.

It takes us out of our ‘routine world and connects us with our childhood world

I am sure many of us watch the show marvelling at the transformations made on celebrities through the skills of the designers, hairdressers and makeup artists. Well, now is the time to start planning your own transformation for Christmas – yes, I said that word – and you too can go to the ball. The Christmas season has officially

Often clients ask me to explain the meaning of NLP, or Neuro-linguistic programming, and how it works. NLP is a highly effective and powerful form of therapy used to assist clients overcome negative thought and emotional patterns and works very well alongside hypnotherapy. But what does NLP mean? ‘Neuro’ refers to how the brain processes information received from our five senses, ‘linguistic’ refers to our

started in the shops. This is the best time to pick up a dress before the rush, so start adding some sparkle to these darker evenings by a spot of window shopping. The stores in Horsham do offer us a fabulous array of choice for such a small town, so enjoy your lunch hour trying on some gorgeous evening dresses and sampling some of the new makeup shades.

West Sussex County Council is encouraging vulnerable people to be safe and get the flu jab this winter. Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services Peter Catchpole said: “Flu can be life-threatening and prove fatal. I would encourage all residents who are eligible to receive a free flu vaccine to contact their local GP surgery and take up the offer. “We’re also encouraging our frontline social care workers to have the vaccine to help ensure they’re

protected and that we can continue to provide a full service over the flu season.” The flu vaccination is available for free to: • Pregnant women • People who are over 65 • Carers • People with long term conditions (such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease and multiple sclerosis) To find out more, contact your local GP or pharmacist.

everyday use of language, the words we use and what they mean to us, and ‘programming’ refers to our learnt thought and behaviour patterns, connected to our communication. Used alongside hypnotherapy it can help increase confidence, positivity and motivation. There are several different techniques used in NLP. ‘Reframing’, this is changing the way you think or feel about something, looking at the experience in a more positive way and with a positive outlook. ‘Anchoring’, linking thoughts and feelings to something that is external

to us. With a phobia for example, we link negative thoughts and feelings to the thing that we fear. During NLP with the use of appropriate language, theses negative links can be broken and replaced with positive ones. ‘Modelling’, a natural way to learn, often at a subconscious level by watching or listening to the therapist. For further information or to make an appointment please call Karen on 07926 971 327. I have clinics in Southwater and Horsham and offer a full Counselling and Hypnotherapy Service.

Do not leave it too late to book a hairdresser if you want a sassy new cut for Christmas as they do get booked up very quickly now. Why not plan an uplifting Christmas by dressing up and remember the charity shops if money is tight. They offer great vintage buys which are very ‘on trend’ and the money goes to a worthy cause. Now where did I put my tiara?

Bootcampers workout in pink Get ready for Winter, urges County Council with pumpkins for cancer Sussex Bootcamps organised a special workout to support the Breast Cancer Campaign recently. As part of Wear it Pink Day on Friday October 28, bootcampers in Horsham Park all entered into the spirit of the occasion and dressed up in pink workout gear and each made a small donation. Together the Bootcampers raised £196.98

the workout ‘soI designed the pumpkins would add that little extra something

To add a bit more fun to the occasion and get into the spirit of Halloween, they were asked to bring along pumpkins to work out with. Co-owner Steve Cork said: “I designed the workout so the pumpkins would add that little extra something to really change the nature of even familiar movements.”

A campaign has been launched by West Sussex County Council to help people get ready for the cold winter months ahead. The advice given ranges from how to protect your home and helping your community to winter travel advice and health and wellbeing. Throughout November information boards will be on display in local libraries to help people think ahead. A new webpage has also been created on the County Council website – www.westsussex.gov.uk/getreadyforwinter - to offer helpful advice and suggest simple steps people can take to prepare for cold weather. Pete Bradbury, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection, said: “After the particularly severe winters we have all experienced in the last couple of years it makes sense to prepare and plan

ahead. “By taking a few simple steps or precautions now people can make life a lot easier should the bad weather hit us hard again.” Some of the advice includes: • Check for people who might need help in your community • Check you have the means to clear snow and ice • Ensure you have shoes with good grip • Prepare your car for the winter • Check travel and weather warnings • Order winter fuel • Check pipes are lagged • Know where to turn your water off • Find out about heating and insulation grants • Wash your hands to prevent viruses spreading People can also call the County Council on 01243 777100 for advice.

During World War Two the A272 which lies at the head of our region formed “a line in the sand”, and scattered throughout the area you will find pill boxes and other military defences, including along the A281 just in Shermanbury, Barrack cottages, rebuilt from the Napoleonic barracks that lay along the Sussex coast. It was after World War One that the semi mystical writer Michael Fairless, who died in 1901 and lies buried in Ashurst Church, would have a resurgent popularity as her writings in The Roadmender struck a chord with those survivors of The Great War.

The old Horsham to Steyning road is the backbone to an area of rural charm whose rich green meadow lands glow against the shadow of the South Downs. During the winter months the extensive trees that fill the summer vision, lay bear exposing the distant views whilst the river Adur, whose waters flow south to Shoreham occasionally provide a mysterious mist to the sharp frosts, with swans gliding silently to Binns Bridge and beyond missing the anglers who venture out in the peace. Although today a quiet backwater thanks to the creation in 1802 of Horsham to Worthing Turnpike and later A24, less than 60 years ago the Horsham to Shoreham railway would fracture the peace with its steam and later railway traffic. Today the railway line provides a walkers and cyclists trackway through open fields, frost revealed cobweb draped branches and the remains of embankments and bridges, tunnels and the Beeching cut station of West Grinstead , forming part of Downslink and a fantastic way to explore the very heart of Horsham District. If ever there was an area that summed up elements of Sussex and English history, this would be it, with its ruined Norman keep at Knepp castle, which at one time was owned by “bad” king john of Robin Hood fame and Magna charter The park would provide game for the kings larder. Later its stones are said to have been used in building of the Horsham to Steyning turnpike. Through to the Tudor monarchy with its religious conflict with West Grinstead, being known for its Roman catholic sympathies, having its Priest house. Some 300 years later, in 1880 the area would provide safe refuge for Carthusian monks who built Parkminster whose tower dominates the eastward skyline. In the early 18th century one of this country’s greatest poets, Alexander Pope would relax awhile composing his celebrated Rape of Lock under an oak tree, whilst the better known poet and essayist Hillaire Belloc would be laid to

Merry Christmas to all our customers High Street, Partridge Green Tel: 01403 711492 This forgotten areas of the district, discovered only by people who like to explore the byways of the district, or by those who live there and keep it a secret idyllic image of typical England, an image enhanced when you find that in 1802 the villages of Ashust and West Grinstead and nearby Shipley had their own cricket team, whilst Patridge Green’s club was founded 80 years later, and in this area stool ball that possible ancestor of the game was played. In an area rich in rural life it may seem strange ending on a modern note, but West Grinstead, Ashurst and Partridge Green are not relics of the past, but inheritors of it, so the brick making made Patridge Green, the Burrell family are remaking the agricultural landscape of West Grinstead and Sir Paul McCartney made

a Christmas classic filming the video for it at the Fountain Ashurst. A region of many surprises.

Warnham is a charming old Sussex village that grew up as a roadside settlement on a valley site presumably chosen for access to water. There are many old buildings in the village made of brick, stone, or timber, often rendered, weatherboarded, or tile hung, and roofed with tiles or Horsham slates; the stone or brick is sometimes painted. In Friday Street some of the houses date from before 1800. Timber-framed buildings of the 17th

century or earlier include the Greets inn, Rose Cottage, and Oak Beams in Friday Street, and Glebe End in Church Street. Warnham has a number of shops, including a village store and butcher, two pubs The Sussex Oak and The Greets Inn and a railway station nearly a mile away from the village. Warnham railway station was built primarily for the brick works, but it does still offer a passenger service Monday to Saturday.

four bedroom Brock Taylor triumph Spacious house in ‘no through road’ at UK property awards The United Kingdom’s premier estate agents gathered at The Lancaster London Hotel, Hyde Park, London last Friday (October 28) for the announcement of the winners of the hotly contested UK Property Awards, in association with Bloomberg Television and Google. Peter Maskell, director of Brock Taylor attended the awards and was delighted that his team won the highly acclaimed title of best estate agents in West Sussex, for the second year running. Peter commented “it is always particularly satisfying to be recognised by your peers, not just in the local market but both regionally and nationally too. No…..it may cost you thousands! Fewer new instructions come onto the market in late November/December because most owners want to enjoy the Christmas festivities with their families before putting their house up for sale in January. Therefore, if you are on the market during this time you will have less competition from other similar properties so serious buyers will have fewer houses to choose from. Also, and probably more importantly, you will notice a decrease in the number of viewings as some buyers wait until this new stock appears in the New Year. However, the flip side of this means that ANYONE who is viewing houses at the end of the year must by definition be extremely keen and serious about buying. This will be due to a number of reasons; foremost being that they have just sold their own property and need to find to buy to complete their chain and cannot afford to wait until after Christmas and risk losing their own buyer. The other main reason will be that they had found a house to buy and that owner has since decided not to move leaving the buyer desperate to find an alternative purchase before their own buyers get frustrated and withdraw from the deal breaking a chain that may have been in place for weeks. Over the last 25 years I have put together some astonishing deals in November and December between extremely good quality buyers and astute clients. The smart move therefore would be to leave your property on the market and take advantage of this because whilst you won’t have viewers queuing down the drive, you will benefit from having better quality viewings. The bottom line is that you have little to lose by being available for sale as the only viewings you will get will be from extremely good quality buyers who will have fewer houses to look at thereby enabling you to possibly secure a higher price due to the laws of supply and demand. The one caveat to all this is that it only works if your estate agent is still working hard for you in promoting your house – if they have ‘given-up’ because they believe Christmas has already arrived then choose a more proactive and helpful one ! If you would like advice on selling your property please call me on 01403 264962, pop into our office at 34 South Street, Horsham or email me at ‘rossattwood@harperjames.co.uk’

The last few months have seen some positive activity in the mortgage market with many banks and building societies being proactive in their search for market share. Although the Bank Of England have kept interest rates at 0.5% for over two years now, many lenders have been reducing the mortgage rates that are available . The interest rates being offered are also becoming more competitive with new lenders entering the market place and established banks and building societies increasing there offerings. The “buy to let” market, which has been starved of choice over the last three years, is finally seeing some competition as far as lenders and interest rates. This could re-ignite an investor’s appetite and again help towards getting the housing market moving. For any borrowers on lenders standard variable rate’s, now could be the perfect time to look around for a better deal. If you are looking for peace of mind and security over a number of years, fixed rates are at record lows. The more equity you have, the better the rate you are likely to be offered. For those who are more adventurous, tracker mortgage’s are also offering great value. Although your mortgage rate will follow whatever the Bank of England decide to do with interest rates, our view is that it will be some time before interest rates start to rise. With offset mortgages still available and most products having overpayment options, there has never been a better time to review your finances and make sure you have the best mortgage product on offer. Some scheme’s are fee’s free to arrange and in some instances, the lender is actually paying the borrower to take the mortgage out! To find out more information about the mortgage products that are now available, please contact me on 01403 268562. Alternatively if you would like to ask a question, please e-mail info@mercierallen.co.uk.

Q A

Is it the right time to remortgage?

Duncan Jagger MRICS Chartered Surveyor Harper James

Q

We live in Billingshurst and our nextdoor neighbours in (houses are semidetached) are going to have two rooms and a bathroom built into their loft space – not uncommon in our road. We have signed a form (mainly, as I understand it, a formality) and according to the plans it does not infringe on our privacy any more than at present. I have a copy of the Party Wall Act 1996, but it does not really say what I should be aware of. I am wondering if there is anything I should do to safeguard my position before work starts.

A

You don’t specify exactly what kind of form you have signed, or whether your neighbours’ surveyor served a Party Wall Notice on you. But since you have mentioned the Party Wall Act, you must have suspicions about this. The Party Wall etc Act 1996 requires building owners to notify their adjoining owners before carrying out works on the party wall itself. Your neighbours would not have to serve a notice simply to inform you they were doing a loft conversion, but they would if the work involved removing chimney breasts, cutting into the party wall to insert new steel beams or flashings, raising the height of the wall, or excavating close to the wall at ground level. If any of these actions are proposed, they should have served a notice on you two months in advance, and invited you to either consent or dissent. It is usually wise for the adjoining owner to dissent, in which case an independent surveyor has to be appointed (paid for by the building owner who proposes the works) to draw up a Party Wall Award, which safeguards your rights. This is explained in more detail in a government booklet, obtainable free by calling 0303 444 0000 or downloaded free from www.communities.gov.uk.

Please note that this article does not constitute as advice, anyone seeking independent advice should contact an independent financial adviser. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage Mercier Allen and Associates Limited is an Appointed Representative of IN Partnership the trading name of The OnLine Partnership Limited which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority.

Leaders shortlisted as finalist in leading estate agency awards Leaders’ HR director, Anita Somers

Letting specialists Leaders are delighted to be confirmed as finalists in The Negotiator Awards 2011, a nationwide estate agency awards scheme designed to identify, reward and celebrate industry excellence and promote best practice. Leaders have been shortlisted in the Employer of the Year category of the awards, which take place in November in association with The Digital Property Group, FindaProperty. com, Globrix.com and Primelocation. com. Says Leaders’ HR director, Anita Somers: “It is particularly fitting that we have been shortlisted for the Employer of the Year Award, given the fact that we have always been dedicated to investing in our employees as a means of ensuring that we provide the highest quality service to our landlords and tenants. “In a service industry such as ours, we know that our employees are our

greatest asset and we are committed to training, developing and incentivising them, to the direct benefit of our clients. As a result, our letting and property management teams consistently demonstrate a willingness to go the extra mile and provide a first-class, professional and personal service.” Leaders are proud to have been an Investor in People accredited firm since 1998, and were one of the first letting agents to attain the Standard. The IiP accreditation has been continually re-awarded to Leaders for their ongoing commitment to investing in the development of their employees. Although Leaders have been growing at an ambitious rate, they have successfully retained the culture and ethos required to be an Investor in People company. Says Ms Somers: “I believe we have been shortlisted for this Employer of the Year award because the judges were impressed by the strategies we have in place for managing our people; our investment in training and development; and our ability to demonstrate that investment in our people improves the performance of

our organisation. “These are the same reasons that, in spite of our significant growth in recent years, we have been continually re-awarded IiP status since first attaining accreditation in 1998.”

strived ‘toWeofferhavean always exceptional service and to set the benchmark for best practice

Leaders are no strangers to awards, having recently won the prestigious Company of the Year award at the Sussex Business Awards; been highly commended in the Estate Agency of the Year category in this year’s Observer & Gazette Business Awards; and presented with an award by the Brighton & Hove Estate Agents Association for improving standards within the industry. Says Ms Somers: “Since we were established over 28 years ago, we have always strived to offer an exceptional service and to set the benchmark for

best practice in the lettings industry. This philosophy has seen us grow from a single letting branch in Brighton in 1983 to 59 branches across the South today. “We are now the UK’s largest independently owned letting agency, but have remained a family business with a strong focus on developing our employees and providing a personal,

local service to each and every one of our landlords and tenants.” For advice you can trust on all aspects of letting or renting in your area please contact your local Leaders branch where the friendly team will be pleased to help: Leaders Horsham – 18a Market Square, Horsham, West Sussex RH12 1EU – 01403 217585

Small but perfectly warmed: the Volkswagen GT up!

Olli Nott Motors Reporter

olli@the-resident.co.uk

Just as the new up! compresses all the virtues of a Volkswagen into a compact city-friendly package, the GT up! concept promises to distil the driving pleasure of the seminal hot hatch, the GTI, into a powerful yet petite package. Following in the wheel tracks of another sporty small car – the original Golf GTI – the GT up! exudes sporting style, from its wide-mouthed honeycomb grille to its two chromed tailpipes. The wide central grille is distinctly larger than that on the standard up! to allow plenty of air to the engine, which could potentially pack 100 PS or more.

Either side of this, the broad bumper includes ducts to provide cooling airflow to the front brakes, these ducts also containing the wingshaped LED daytime running lights. The sporting theme continues along the flanks, which feature extended sills and black gloss-painted door mirrors. The wheels are archfilling 17-inch alloys with wide 195-section tyres. At the rear, a deep roof spoiler helps reduce lift over the rear axle, while a black diffuser at the bottom is complemented by an exhaust pipe on either side which make a nice sporting touch to the up! In the cabin, the GT up! is no less sporty. Beneath a black roof lining are anthracite-coloured seats offset by central panels with a blue chequered pattern that has more than a hint of GTI about it.

The gloss-black dashboard and upper door trim panels are similarly offset by blue rings around the air vent nozzles, while the driver gets to grip a chunky leather-bound three-spoke wheel. The GT up! remains a concept for now but certainly received a favourable reception when it was shown at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s certainly something I’d want to drive. Order books for the standard three-door up! are already open, and first customer deliveries are expected in Spring 2012. For more information please visit your retailer or www.volkswagen. co.uk

Snow socks and Stevens to aid safer Winter driving Following a treacherous winter of snowfall and plummeting temperatures last year, Vauxhall retailer, Stevens, is encouraging motorists in Horsham to prepare themselves for the colder months with a comprehensive range of winter accessories. In an effort to increase road safety this year, the retailer on Billingshurst Road is offering a number of winter car care accessories, including the popular and highly effective AutoSock Snow Socks; tyre covers which give vehicles extra traction on snow and ice, reducing the risk of an accident in slippery conditions. Last year, the Association of British Insurers found that insurance companies paid out £530 million to motorists in 278,000 claims during the winter months alone and many of these claims were for accidental damage caused by driving on slippery roads.

The risk of having an accident in these conditions is seriously reduced through the use of the AutoSock Snow Socks and the extra grip they provide. What’s more, these innovative tyre covers are far less bulky and awkward than snow chains and are easily fitted over the driving wheels of the vehicle to create greater friction on the road. Plus they can be reused time and time again. Peter Stevens, Managing Director, from Stevens comments: “Here at Stevens we pride ourselves in caring for our customers’ safety as much as anything else and our winter accessories range demonstrates this perfectly. “Whilst we know that most motorists are careful when driving in cold winter conditions and wouldn’t choose to make a journey if the roads were too dangerous, sometimes driving on treacherous roads

is unavoidable; whether you need to collect the children from school or travel home from work. “This is why we are offering these products to our customers, so that the risk of them having an accident this winter is substantially reduced.” AutoSock Snow Socks are available from Stevens at a starting price of just £49.95 RRP. Also on offer at Stevens this winter are a wide range of Autoglym car care products, including De-Icer and Concentrated Screenwash, both available for just £3.99, which will improve visibility in bad weather by keeping the windscreen free from snow and ice. For further information on the winter car care accessories available from Stevens or for vehicles in the Vauxhall range, please visit 78 Billingshurst Road, Broadbridge Heath, Horsham, RH12 3LP. Alternatively, call 01403 256464 or visit www.stevensvauxhall.co.uk

Halloween horror show at Hastings but Horsham bounce back for point Matthew James Sport Editor

Horsham

Horsham caretaker manager Hugo Langton will be given time to show he is the right man for the job on a long-term basis. Chief executive John Lines said a decision on Langton’s future would not necessarily be made at the next committee meeting on November 14. He was speaking after Dean O’Keefe’s late equaliser salvaged a point in a 1-1 draw at promotion contenders Hendon on Wednesday – the Hornets’ second point in 10 league games and the first time in 14 matches they have not conceded at least two goals.

Lines told The Resident: “We’ve had applications from potential managers asking about the ‘vacancy’, but there is no vacancy. “Hugo knows, and we know, that we’ve got to give him a period of time to settle in. We want to see how the results pan out. “With Hugo and Richard Langley’s coaching experience, combined with the energy shown by the team at Hendon, I think we will start pick up some results. Any good game where you play well and get something must improve your confidence. “We defended well in the first half

and attacked a lot more in the second half. The players didn’t give up and just kept coming back. “We came away with a thoroughly deserved point with a lot of hard graft and no shortage of skill, particularly by Craig Davies.” Langton tweeted that he was unable to attend the match due to a family break, booked before the game was rearranged and he became manager. The performance at Hendon contrasted with the Hornets’ dismal 5-0 defeat at struggling Hastings United on Saturday, when Helge Orome and Calum McGeehan were sent off. Langton told www.hornetsreview. co.uk: “I didn’t expect that in my wildest dreams. Talk about a baptism of fire and a real welcome to the hotseat! “I was unhappy with the way we were passing the ball and we made it easy for them by playing a very high line, which wasn’t the instruction I’d given. “I’m very big on discipline so I wasn’t pleased that we had two players sent off, especially Helge who I can’t defend. He kicked out at his opponent and has realised that he let

me and his team-mates down. “He was pretty emotional after the game but was man enough to hold his hands up and apologise to me and the lads. “Calum was distraught because he is adamant he got to the ball first, so that’s good enough for me. “Give me time and I’ll get it right. We’ll make changes as we go, bit by bit, but it won’t surprise anyone when I say that my priority is to strengthen the defence.”

‘We never turned up’, admits YMCA boss Tom Norris Football

the-resident.co.uk/sport

Horsham YMCA’s three-game unbeaten league run came to an abrupt halt as high-flying Lancing eased to a 4-0 win at Gorings Mead. YM boss Sammy Donnelly admitted: “It was very disappointing. We never turned up and we didn’t play at all as a team. Maybe the tiredness from extra time in midweek (against Horsham) showed as we were second

to the ball all game, but that is no excuse.” Both sides started slowly and contributed very little to a quiet first half, but Richard Hudson made the breakthrough with a well-struck free kick past a questionable YM wall. YM rarely looked like threatening the visitors’ goal and the second period became a far more one-sided affair. Striker Shar Sadough doubled the lead with a header from close range before Dan Turner collected Sadough’s flick and lofted a delightful lob

for 3-0. Lancing added their fourth on the break, Sadough releasing substitute Darren Boswell to expertly curl the ball past a motionless Simon Lockwood. Donnelly added: “It’s gone now and we’ve got to get ready for Peacehaven (away from home tomorrow), which won’t be easy. “We’ve got to pick up as many points as we can because I don’t want to be right down the bottom, struggling at some later stage. “It looks like we play better away

from home than at home at the moment, so let’s hope that shows.”

Another week has passed and we are still waiting to get back to winning ways. After the West Ham game I thought we were back on the right track. Although we didn’t score in that game or in the draw at Birmingham on Saturday, I thought Tuesday’s game at Watford would see us victorious for the first time in a couple of months. Due to work commitments I wasn’t able to get to Vicarage Road but instead sat in a hotel dining room, having a meal with work colleagues while constantly checking Twitter. Thanks to several serial tweeters, I had a good feel for the game while working my way through a lamb shank. What I read didn’t make happy reading. I know we have five or six injuries that have disrupted our playing style, but we have hardly looked like scoring for weeks. We have what I think is a ‘must win’ game on Sunday. If we don’t beat Barnsley at The Amex, we are in real danger of Southampton putting us right down in the relegation fight in a couple of weeks. I don’t think any of us would relish that, but as fans we need to play our part. Last Saturday I heard fans around me complaining about our playing style. Maybe they are new to watching Albion, maybe not, but getting on the backs of Gus and the players isn’t going to help. We are playing in a much more competitive division than we did last year. Despite our fantastic start to the season, I think most of us knew it wasn’t going to last. Come Sunday, we need to get behind the team and put pressure on the officials, to help win those 50-50 decisions and out-sing the Barnsley fans. We need to be that 12th man. I really believe that once we get back to winning ways and scoring goals we will be fine. We might not finish in the promotion places or even in a play-off position, but I’m sure we are good enough to finish in the top half of the table. Get your singing heads on for Sunday. Even if we don’t start the game well, stay positive and don’t get on the players’ backs. Hopefully the players will respond.

Youngsters celebrate success

Sport in Brief Youth Swimming The Pavilions in the Park was packed with a record crowd for the inaugural Endless Pools Trophy team gala. Seven teams competed in more than 50 events as they battled for the trophy, sponsored by Home Counties Pools and Hot Tubs. Atlantis A (251 points) finished just ahead of Redhill and Reigate (248), with Mid Sussex Marlins third (236). Andy Lobley, Atlantis’ deputy head coach, said: “This was a fantastic experience for our younger swimmers, many of whom have not swum in a competitive gala before or in such a fevered atmosphere. “I hope it will give them the confidence to start competing on a more regular basis. They certainly showed they all have the ability to do so.” Craig Trusson, of Horsham-based Home Counties, said: “I was delighted to support this event. It was great to see so many people having so much fun on a Saturday night. It beats Strictly Come Dancing!”

Another reality check, this time at the hands of second-placed Sutton Valence, saw Horsham stumble to mid-table with a 3-1 home defeat. The 29-year-old wicketkeeper/ batsman, who made his first-class debut for Sussex in 2001, has made more than 10,000 first-class runs. He said: “It’s a great honour to sign another contract for Sussex. I’ve been at the club as a professional for 11 years now and it is very close to my heart. “The support over the years from the fans and members alike has been very special.” Mark Robinson, Sussex’s professional cricket manager, said: “To have the best wicketkeeper/batsman in the world committed to us for the next two years is fantastic.”

An early second-half goal by Dan Rhodes reduced the deficit and Horsham piled everything into a series of raids, but a galling break induced a further short corner which was again converted. Manager Jane Denman said: “It was a superb team performance and just what the doctor ordered as a boost for the National League season. “We haven’t been playing as badly as our disappointing league results

We’ve needed a confidence boost and the magnificent cup win has certainly given us that. “We’ll look to improve our league status with this injection of selfbelief.” Horsham Ladies 2nds beat Southwick 5-0 to set up a third-round meeting with the 1sts on January 7. Harry’s stunner It’s King James again does the trick Youth Football

Horsham U15 reached the semifinal of the Arun and Chichester Youth League Cup, beating Summerley Park Rangers U15 3-2. Harry Lee’s late free kick, curled in from 30 yards after a foul on Will Kerr, was worthy of winning any game and proved the difference between the sides. Kerr opened the scoring, reacting quickly to nod the ball home when Andrew Roberts’ free kick rebounded off the crossbar, and good goalkeeping prevented Callum Nash from extending the lead. Shortly before half time, Roberts was adjudged to have been fouled in the area. A Rangers player was

booked for his protests, but Roberts stayed calm and converted the penalty. Rangers hit back to equalise with goals just before and after half time, but Lee unleashed his stunning free kick and Horsham withstood late pressure to book a semi-final against Predators U15. Horsham U16 maintained their 100 per cent record with a 2-1 win at Polegate Grasshoppers U16 in Division 1 of the Sussex Sunday Youth League. Harry Garman and Ben Collier produced dangerous crosses from Horsham’s left, but it was Connor Cushing who set up Harry Smith for the first goal, a dipping shot from 20 yards. The young Hornets doubled their advantage after 25 minutes when man of the match Cushing and Garman combined well to set up Zak Comber for his near-compulsory goal. Grasshoppers got one back before half time and Horsham were made to work hard for the points. Tom Killner-Brown headed in Stanley Rice’s free kick but was adjudged offside. Horsham U14 eased to a 5-1 win at Lindfield U14 in Division 1 of the Sussex Sunday Youth League. Liam Clarke scored twice to take his season’s tally to seven, while Finn Bigg, Hugo Cowan and Jack Reeves were also on target.

Green battle back Rugby Union

Barns Green fought back to win 3228 at Norfolk Arms, overturning a 10-point deficit with 18 minutes left before surviving a late siege. Player-coach Josh Callaghan, who scored one of the tries, said: “What pleased me most was the way we defended our line in the last 10 minutes – absolutely superb. “That gives me much more satisfaction than the fancy stuff we do at the other end.” Several players withdrew from the squad on the morning of the game, meaning Green travelled to Wiston with only 15 players. But Ryan Watkinson scored two tries, Harry Swetman and Callaghan one each. Matt Hoyte kicked three

conversions and two penalties. Barns Green are next in action at home to Horley on Saturday, November 12. Horsham, who suffered a 49-13 defeat at Crowborough in London 3 South East, host Winchester in the RFU Senior Vase tomorrow (Saturday, 2pm). Horsham U13 enjoyed a 36-7 win against Haywards Heath U13 in their first league match of the season. But it was a long time in coming as Sam Cole’s try just before half time meant Horsham trailed 7-5 at the break before cutting loose in the second half. As Horsham moved the ball through slick hands, winger Rasmus Madum scored two tries, Max Elliott and Oscar Nicholls also crossed and Max Chrusciel touched down after a run of more than 40 yards.
