More than 300 jobs have been secured with the takeover of a Horsham district business by the UK’s biggest mushroom grower.

The assets and contracts of Sussex Mushrooms, which has operated the business since 2006, have been transferred to a new company – Thakeham Mushrooms Ltd, owned by Monaghan Mushrooms.

The new company will continue to trade as Sussex Mushrooms.

With headquarters in the Republic of Ireland, Monaghan Mushrooms employs more than 1,000 people at mushroomgrowing facilities around the UK.

investment, assisting in making mushroom production more viable at this site.

“While providing longer-term financial stability, the acquisition of Sussex Mushrooms by Monaghan is unlikely to change the basic requirements of the business.

“The survival of Sussex Mushrooms will be very good news for the local economy.”

A spokesman for the district council added: “We are taking legal advice on whether the change in ownership has any bearing on the planning applications considered in April.

“The issue should be resolved within the next week or so.”

Rugby club’s touch of help for charity More than 200 players took part in a touch rugby tournament at Horsham Rugby Club, helping disadvantaged children through the Wooden Spoon charity.

Pink Panthers won the Cup, Hip Hip Anonymous the Plate and ‘Wales’ the M&J final against ‘New Zealand’, 6-5 in a great match. Scott Saunders collected the trophy for best young player.

Event organiser Rob Grantham-Hill said: “We had outstanding team costumes this year, a really good turnout for the minis and juniors (M&J) tournament and plenty of sun.

“With so much interest, sadly we could not invite all the teams that tried to apply. Bring on next year!”

John O’Sullivan, the new bar and events manager, took to the microphone to announce the raffle winners and deliver a quick comedy set.

He said: “The club has some great, friendly and bubbly volunteers and staff, who make these kind of days very special. Hats off to the organisers, who raised just under £1,000 for Wooden Spoon.

“I am planning many more events to continue increasing the club’s popularity.”

When Millais girls went Dutch Twenty girls from Millais School have returned from Nijmegen, Holland, after completing the famous Four Days Marches.

The 16-year-olds joined 42,000 people from across the world to walk 100 miles over four consecutive days.

Team leader Andy Skinner said: “This was no small achievement for the girls. They have trained hard since before Christmas, completing more than 300 miles of walking while preparing for and taking their GCSEs. “I have been mightily impressed by the girls’ commitment and ability to

work both as individuals and as part of a team. Several have raised quite considerable sums of money for various charities.

“They were wonderful ambassadors for the young people of the UK.” Laura Wallace, who celebrated her 16th birthday on the final day of the marches, said: “It was the trip of a lifetime. So many people wished me a happy birthday and sang to me. Even the Sussex Police team bought me a cake and balloons.”

The girls also visited a British and Commonwealth military cemetery,

where a wreath was laid on behalf of the school and a family tribute laid at the grave of Lance Corporal Bob Gardiner.

A relative of Emily Gardiner, one of the girls in the team, he was killed in the Battle for Nijmegen in February 1945.

Emily said: “This was a very moving moment for me and I wish my gran could have been there to see it.”

Pupil Jasminder Sahota said: “This trip was the perfect end to our time at Millais. It has been one of the most amazing things we have ever done.”

News in Brief Dressed as dogs Sainsbury’s, Worthing Road, Horsham, will raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind by holding an obedience class during which colleagues will dress up as dogs.

The event, at 11am on Tuesday, will be the first in a year-long partnership between the store and the charity.

Customers will be asked to donate or enter a lucky dip, while a puppy dog hunt around the store will enable children to join in the fun.

Store manager Ian Maxey said: “Our colleagues chose Guide Dogs for the Blind because their aims and objectives really touched the hearts of many of our colleagues and customers.

“We hope this early fundraiser will show our Horsham customers that we’re passionate to give help and support, through raising awareness and fundraising, for the Guide Dogs for the Blind.

“We also hope our customers will join in the fun and support this very worthy local community charity.”

County cricket is back at Horsham Businesses set for windfall as Sussex County Cricket Club comes to town for five days Andrew Souques Cricket

The best of English cricket will return to Horsham next week.

Sussex will play Worcestershire twice in what should be an entertaining and eventful festival of topflight cricket – a four-day match from Wednesday to Saturday (from 11am each day) and a 40-over game on Sunday week (1.45pm).

For many years the historic Cricketfield Road ground has played host to one of the most prestigious sporting events in the area, the Horsham Festival of Cricket, which manages to break statistical records year on year.

Supporters will be able to watch Sussex play on one of the most beautiful grounds in the country.

Hosting the event requires a lot of preparation. Sussex chief executive Dave Brooks said tasks included moving seats, setting up advertising boards, erecting hospitality marquees and constructing a temporary kitchen, all of which will take two days to build and two days to break down.

Once ready, the artistic site where cricket was first played in 1851 will be perfect for the expected 2,000 fans each day.

Local businesses can benefit. With the ground just a five-minute walk away from the popular town centre, fans and tourists can experience Horsham’s wide range of shops, accommodation and renowned heritage.

A spokesman for Horsham District

Council said: “The cricket club works with the council to promote the town as a destination. This is a highlight of the Summer, providing a quintessential British experience.”

Mr Brooks said county teams visiting Horsham stayed in local hotels, generating revenue in the region of £5,000 per annum for the hotels used.

For the many cricket-lovers who come to Horsham from all over the country, travelling to the ground is usually straightforward. Horsham railway station is a 20-minute walk away for many people, with the bus station 10 minutes away.

Ping pong progress A table tennis table is due to be installed in Horsham Park this month.

Horsham District Council is working in partnership with Horsham Table Tennis Club and Denne Neighbourhood Council to put in a highspecification concrete table.

A district council spokesman said: “We are just waiting for the designated area, near the Conservatory Café, to be concreted ready for its delivery.

All being well, the job will be completed by the end of August.”

A Horsham Hospital worker will take part in the Royal Marines Chara Challenge on September 4.

Horsham resident Kate Dold, 33, from the hospital’s paediatric physiotherapy team, will join three friends on a 30-mile trek across varied terrain in Dartmoor.

Money raised will go to the British Limbless Ex-Servicemen’s Association (BLESMA) and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund.

Mrs Dold, a Beaver Scout leader in Horsham, said: “We are doing this to support all the men and women that are out there protecting our country and for the families of those that have fallen.

“This is both a physical and personal challenge for us all, but we believe so very strongly in ourselves that we will complete this come hell or high water.”

Bus campaigners launch ‘dirty’ war Campaigners fighting to save a bus service say extra cars would add to already recognised pollution in their village.

Cowfold residents launched a determined bid to persuade West Sussex County Council not to scrap the 86 bus as part of its cost-cutting measures.

The 86 serves Horsham, Southwater, West Grinstead, Partridge Green, Shermanbury, Cowfold, Bolney, Ansty, Cuckfield including Warden Park School, and Haywards Heath including the Princess Royal Hospital.

The service was one of more than 60 highlighted by The Resident in May as being recommended for removal in September or October.

We have dangerously ‘high levels of nitrogen dioxide in our village ’

Almost half of the services originally listed – including the 86 – have been spared the axe until at least April next year, but their fate after that is still uncertain.

Recent tests showed levels of nitrogen dioxide are likely to exceed the maximum allowed in central parts of the village, including The Street, Station Road and Bolney Road.

A district council spokesman said: “In Cowfold the air pollution is due to the large number of vehicles using the road, combined with the stopstart nature of driving conditions.

“Although these conditions may also occur in other parts of the district, action must be taken when amounts of air pollution are exceeded at locations with ‘relevant exposure’ – places where people live, work or go to school.”

The district council will consult with West Sussex County Council and other interested parties to look at ways of reducing levels of the pollutant.

Cowfold resident Caroline Collins, who has helped lead the campaign to save the 86, said in an email to supporters: “We have dangerously high levels of nitrogen dioxide in our village at the junction of the A272 and A281.

“This toxic gas is found in exhaust fumes and is linked to respiratory diseases and some cancers. Horsham District Council is asking residents and road users to give their opinions and suggestions on how to tackle this problem.

“At a recent Cowfold Parish Council meeting, a district council representative talked about ways of reducing this pollution. She strongly recommended increased use of public transport and fewer car drivers.

“This is exactly what we argued for, among other things, at our ‘Save the 86 Bus’ public meeting on June 8.

We also put it in writing to Cllr Louise Goldsmith (leader of West Sussex County Council).

“The 86 has had its subsidy cut deferred until April as a result of the impact assessment analysis which involved reading 6,000 responses countywide.

The county council says it is actively working with bus companies to look for other ways to keep buses running.

But a spokesman admitted the council accidentally omitted one route that should have been included in the list of subsidy cuts released to The Resident last month.

Funding for the Compass 63 (Cranleigh to Horsham) Sunday service is being withdrawn and the county council says this service is “likely to cease”.

More than a Highland jig for Clive Business boss Clive Hancocks is preparing for a week out of the office. But it will be far from a relaxing time as he walks 97 miles for charity.

Mr Hancocks, a director of Mortgage Solutions, Horsham, will walk the West Highland Way from near Glasgow to Fort William in aid of Chestnut Tree House, the only children’s hospice in Sussex.

The 59-year-old and fellow walker Chris Weber-Brown, 67, have raised about £900 in donations and sponsorship pledges so far and expect to reach their target of £1,000 before the walk this month.

Mr Hancocks said: “We have both done the South Downs Way, The Dales Way, The Shakespeare Way (146 miles) and the Sussex Ouse Valley Way “This walk in Scotland is apparently one of the most beautiful in the world, past Loch Lomond and up past Ben Nevis.

“Each year I do a walk, I link it with a charity and my choice this year is Chestnut Tree House. It is the only children’s hospice in Sussex and cares for children and young adults

There are potentially 400 families with life-limited children in Sussex alone. Chestnut Tree House offers support for the whole family, including psychological support, bereavement therapy, end-of-life and respite care, and sibling support.

Walk down Horsham High Street any day and you will meet at least one homeless person selling the Big Issue.

If you want a living indictment of the kind of society millionaires like Cameron defend, you need look no further.

Imagine my feelings when I saw the current Big Issue is ‘edited’ by David Cameron! Big Issue supremo John Bird, who set out wanting to help the homeless, now has them forced to peddle the most disgusting Conservative Party propaganda.

If they refuse to sell the magazine, then maybe they don’t eat tonight.

In an editorial, Bird lavishes praise on the Big Society, in which individuals can take the place of the state in helping out.

Yet of course this very magazine shows what is wrong with this approach. The homeless are at the mercy of the whims of a philanthropist. If those whims include grovelling to the Tory Party then the homeless have to grovel.

If his name does not appear in the New Year’s honours list there just ain’t no justice!

And one final question. If Cameron or Bird go into hospital, will they be happy for a volunteer to walk in off the street and operate on them? If so I am prepared to give it a go.

More nostalgic recollections of Horsham of yesteryear!

This time a 1951 photograph of the old Horsham Fire Station, tucked away off North Street on the edge of Horsham Park (The Resident, July 29).

I’m not an expert as regards fire engines but my husband reckons – and here he stands to be corrected – that the vehicle on the left of the picture is a conventional fire tender of the Fifties.

In the middle is what looks like one of the iconic Green Goddess tenders used by the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) during the war.

Later manned by the military and brought back into service during an emergency, these were a familiar sight until comparatively recent times.

The vehicle on the right appears to be a Morris Commercial acting as a salvage tender.

As Horsham mushroomed in size, the need for larger, more modern facilities became obvious. From memory, the Park fire station was vacated and moved to new purpose-built premises during the mid-1970s.

All the emergency services were clustered together – fire, police and ambulance. The moral: Watch your speed in Hurst Road!

In the current photograph, next door to the old fire station building one can just spot the corner of the Horsham Park Barn, a popular meeting place for voluntary organisations, owned and operated by the district council.

Am I alone in believing there is a conspiracy afoot? I’m talking about 0845 numbers, which are like an epidemic – and costly.

I am becoming sick and tired of listening to the inane monotone babblings from machines, keeping me informed about things of which I have absolutely no interest, only to be repetitively told how important I am and that an adviser will be with me “shortly”.

All at bloated cost. Damn the consumer – who cares!

Err, no. I’m not important, they are understaffed, and what is more they have completely lost sight of their own mission statements.

Once upon a time the customer was king. Not now. The people who provide these so-called services probably think they are more important than their customers.

It’s even more insane when you are trying to pay a bill. It seems as though they have devised a method to deter you from doing it – or are they earning while you wait?

New garden is a baaarnstorming success Visitors from across the world have been enjoying the new Human Nature Garden in Horsham Park.

Liz Timmer, Horsham in Bloom committee member, said: “We have chatted to many local residents and visitors from Germany, Seattle, Scotland and even from as far as Hong Kong who have been very impressed by this Lottery-funded project.

“The garden has been open since June 18 and the grassed amphitheatre has become the perfect place for a picnic for mums and their toddlers.

“The children love exploring the pathways and enjoy following each other up and over the track through the Super foods section, where the giant sunflowers tower above their heads and the bees are buzzing in the Borage.

“Their parents can be heard telling them about the various plants as they pass. They may realise on regular visits that they are surrounded by rhubarb, strawberries, blackcurrants and even Goji berries.

“There is also the harder to recognise Liquorice, Safflower, Amaranth, Ornamental Rice and a Pomegranate Bush.

“There are excellent interpretative signs which provide information on the uses of Lavender, Bamboo, Borage and Sunflowers.

“The recent heavy rain has helped the garden to flourish in the past few weeks, beyond Horsham in Bloom’s expectations.

“In other areas of the garden there are many plants connected to cosmetics, soap and even dyes which were traditionally used to create the green of Robin Hood’s cloak and the blue Woad for battle.

“The trees of the orchard will be laden with fruit in the Autumn – plums, pears and many varieties of Sussex apples. In this same area you may recognise a Medlar Tree, a Ginko Biloba and Pine Nut. “Toddlers love to dance on the amphitheatre stage and to run to the carved sheep, particularly to clamber over them and sit for a while. Who would have thought they would be so popular?

“The sheep were away for a while, but now they’re back the children will be so pleased.”

Raising Hope in Ghana The Raising Hope Foundation, a Horsham-based charity, is building an orphanage in Ghana – and 11 volunteers are running a twoweek camp for the orphans who will live there.

The foundation is working alongside a Ghanaian charity, Living Faith Foundation, to realise the dream of Agnes Appiah by building an orphanage in her home of Santrokofi.

This is a traditional and relatively poor area comprising of three villages. There are a large number of orphanages and needy children living in far from ideal circumstances.

The Raising Hope Foundation aims to provide a home for these children

and give them security, stability, food, health care and access to education.

Foundation chairman Kinza Mason said: “We want to get alongside families, help the children to stay at home where they can and provide a home for those that can’t.”

The foundations of the orphanage began in 2009 and the walls were completed last Summer. Now the foundation needs to pay for the roof.

Children in the Summer camp are being taught English, maths, art and sport, split into classes dependent on their age.

A singer and a rat boost charity event The Hillside Lodge care home, Pulborough, raised £750 for the home and Cancer Research UK at a Summer fete and barbecue.

The purpose-built care home, which houses up to 60 people, opened its doors to the friends and family of workers and residents for a fun day of food and games.

Attractions included bat the rat, while a professional singer performed all afternoon in the recently refurbished garden.

Manager Judi Allerton said she hoped some of the money raised would go towards a new awning in the garden.

The new mission to find black gold Is Horsham district an unexpected source of oil?

That is the question being answered by Derbyshire-based TeslaIMC International, which has been commissioned by Celtique Energie Weald to carry out a geophysical survey in much of the district and part of Surrey.

Among other places, it is exploring in Billingshurst, Broadbridge Heath, Colgate, Cowfold, Horsham, Itchingfield, Nuthurst, Pulborough, Rudgwick, Rusper, Shipley, Slinfold, Southwater, Thakeham, Warnham, West Chiltington and West Grinstead.

The major work started on July 18 and is due to continue until late August, seven days a week (7.30am to 6pm).

It’s well into Summer and all is buzzing at Warnham Local Nature Reserve.

The meadow is flourishing and soon it will be time for our fourlegged grass cutters, the Hebridean sheep, to return.

While most of the birds and animals have already raised their families, the insects are still busy. A wide range of butterflies, including Red Admiral, Peacock, Small Copper, Comma, Gatekeeper, Speckled Wood, Ringlet and Silver-Washed Fritillary are frequently seen.

Wildflowers are in profusion all over the reserve and especially in the meadow.

The pair of Great Crested Grebe, which nested opposite the Tern Hide, now has two chicks. At first they were carried on the backs of the parent birds, but they are becoming increasingly independent as they learn to catch their food. Little Grebe, or Dabchicks, are rather more secretive, but at least one pair has been seen with chicks.

The two pairs of Common Tern successfully raised their respective families too. They are gaining strength for their long migration to Africa.

This year’s Herons are almost full grown and can regularly be seen by the Millpond and adjacent trees.

They are also regularly seen in flight as they tend to venture much further afield. (Thank you, Horsham area, for providing all those goldfish ponds!)

A surprise visitor was a Goshawk.

This raptor was observed in the treetops across the Millpond for about 20 minutes, on Friday last week.

Coincidentally this was made easier as Viewpoint Optics has set up a demonstration of binoculars and telescopes in the meadow.

Recent countryside activities for Horsham District Council included a Moth Night and Adult Pond Dipping.

Both attracted a small group of interested observers.

All the 50 or more varieties of moth from the first event were released unharmed after identification and recording.

700 species noted on the reserve. The pond dipping was somewhat dampened by the frequent showers, but a good selection of samples was later examined and identified in the visitor centre with the aid of microscopes and magnifiers.

Graham Matthews, who led the event, was able to connect his microscopes to cameras and display the findings on the TV screen.

A note for anyone interested in pond life and other small creatures: The Quekett Microscopical Club will visit the reserve on Saturday, August 20, and visitors will be able to see some of the fascinating inhabitants under the microscopes.

An evening walk on the reserve will take place on Tuesday, August 23, and a (more junior) pond-dipping event on Saturday, September 3.

Members’ activities have included a photographic workshop, led by John and Oliver Wilks, and a birdringing demonstration. There will be a members’ Bat Walk in the evening of August 31.

The Friends were also active with their roadshow stall at Piries Place, Sparks in the Park and during the recent optical demonstration by Viewpoint Optics (Astronomia) of Dorking.

The eighth nature photographer of the year competition is receiving entries until August 31. Winners and a selection of runners-up will have their pictures displayed at the reserve from October to the end of the year.

Carmela in Horsham is celebrating its first anniversary this weekend (August 6).

The Italian Restaurant on Denne Road in Horsham was opened a year ago by local man Francesco Raciti, after 16 years in the hospitality business.

The restaurant has had a successful start, despite opening during one of the worst recessions in history – a testament to its commitment to authentic, quality food and great customer service.

Francesco said: “I’ve lived in

Horsham since I was young, having moved over from Italy when I was just 15. It has always been my dream to open a restaurant here as I love the town, and now I’m thrilled that Carmela has been so popular.”

The aim of Carmela was to bring fresh Italian food to the people of Horsham with influences from Sicilly.

The majority of the dishes served are made on the premises, using ingredients sourced locally, and the menu is affordably priced so anyone can enjoy a taste of Southern Italy.

The restaurant has a large patio area for al fresco dining or drinks and there is also a meeting area available on the first floor for which there is no charge during the week.

Francesco’s sister Rosella and has recently been included in the Sussex Food and Drink magazine.

With family members now at the helm, Francesco plans to concentrate on expanding the concept of fresh Italian produce throughout the town.

“I would like to develop the business further as I believe the people of the town appreciate good quality, wholesome Italian food.

“I would like to open a deli where people can buy produce from around the area, and in the future I would like to run the business self-sufficiently, with as many ingredients as possible coming from our own allotment or small farm.

“This is just the beginning of fantastic Italian food in Horsham!”

But a degree and full-time employment aren’t the only options for teenagers and twenty-somethings leaving school or college, as a group of 17 year-olds from West Sussex have proven, by setting up their own businesses.

“Although it can be tough, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I get to make decisions for myself and I’m looking forward to developing the business even further”, Nick added.

As well as hard work and determination, it can often take a bright idea to get a business off the ground - something that Tom Williams and James Seear know well, having created a business out of re-selling text books to fellow students.

The pair, who embody all the attributes of a true entrepreneur felt there was a demand for their service and seized the opportunity. James said: “We saw a gap in the market and decided that we could offer a service that would be of benefit to people.

And so, Recyclabook was born”. It is not James and Tom’s first attempt at running a business. Together, they made their first profit at just 14 years old by setting up a babysitting service.

Today, Recyclabook goes from strength to strength. The company has won awards for its innovation and the lads are expanding, placing book recycling bins in schools and colleges across the South East and in London.

But with all the hard work that goes with starting up a business as well as studying and taking exams, surely there are some sacrifices being made? Nick said: “It can be hard when your friends go out and have fun and you have made a commitment to do some work for someone.

But there are far more plusses than negatives to working for yourself.”

Greg added: “It’s a different kind of work. A lot of my friends work all day Saturday to earn money. It just depends on what you prefer. But when you work for yourself, if a customer wants a meeting, they come first - regardless of what my mates are doing”.

Tom and James have learnt lessons in their short career that even the most experienced of business owners could take heed from: “You have to be a good leader as well as having a good idea. We have started employing people to help with our workload and I think it is important to not only do your best, but inspire and motivate everyone else to get the best out of them”, Tom said.

For budding entrepreneurs and business owners, they both agreed the key is working hard as well as being persistent.

James added: “Success doesn’t happen overnight. We have put a lot of time and energy into our venture and we are starting to see it develop.

It’s tough but so rewarding. You have to learn to love rejection and understand that there is a learning curve.

If you keep focused, the possibilities are endless”.

Into the Den for Warnham business owner Despite the Dragons being ‘out’, businessman Alan Sharrock is proving his new product is a wise investment A man who owns a Warnhambased health and wellbeing business has appeared on the BBC programme, Dragon’s Den, in an attempt to get investment for his weight loss product.

A man from Horsham has turned his skills in engineering and passion for skateboarding into a business and is currently working on Horsham Skate Park.

Piers Chapman is the founder of 9C Ramps, a company which designs and builds skateparks and ramps for BMX, skateboards and rollerblades.

He has now been commissioned by Horsham District Council to create a space in Horsham Park for those who enjoy the sports.

The new facility replaces the old Horsham Skate Park, in its original spot and is scheduled to be ready for use at the end of August.

Piers graduated in 2006 and worked in engineering roles before setting up his company, but says this project is about more than just business. “From the start this has always been about creating something for everyone to use and improving the existing skate park. It’s the reason I’m proud to be involved”, Piers told The Resident.

The engineer has worked on a number of similar projects including a tunnel for Nike, and says that when it is complete, Horsham’s will be one of the best of its kind in the South East.

The launch of the new park comes at a time when the government is increasing awareness of the importance of young people being healthier in an effort to tackle obesity.

Piers said: “Places like this help keep kids active and fit. It’s great to see young people getting outside in the fresh air and doing something that gets them moving and makes

them happy. It not only keeps them healthy, it keeps them out of mischief!”

Piers has designed the park using special software and is in the process of constructing it with a team of people. He believes his skills are ideal for this kind of work: “Not only am I interested in BMX riding and skateboarding, but I am a perfectionist and pay attention to detail, which is important for building ramps like these.”

Hundreds of people attended a charity event at the Shelley Arms in Broadbridge Heath to raise funds and awareness for the Scleroderma Society.

Scleroderma is a disease that claimed the life the father of Thain Martin, who organised the event. He was a music lover and Thain believes it was the best possible tribute to

her dad. She said: “I know a lot of local bands so I thought it was a good way to honour my dad’s memory and raise some money for a really important cause.

“I’m really pleased we have been able to help and really grateful to everyone for coming.”

The event, called Backing the RSSR, began at 12 midday and continued

until midnight, raising more than £1,200 with more money yet to be collected.

Entertainment was provided by local bands Reoffender, Davy’s Gripp, Hollows of Venus, The High Octane Junkies, Chelle Dean, The Furious Badgers, Echoes and Keep the Faith.

Other activities took place to help raise money throughout the afternoon including a charity auction, which included the sale of artwork and prints donated by Lindsey Wright and Greg Hart. Prints included portraits of celebrities including Lady Ga Ga. A computer was also donated to the auction.

Stalls were set up throughout the day selling cakes, handmade jewellery as well as a barbeque and beer tent.

Thain added: “I have been overwhelmed by the support of the public and the people who helped make this event possible, and I’m really grateful. As it is an organisation so close to my heart, it means a great deal to me. I now hope to make this an annual event.”

The Strum Lovin’ Criminals make their debut Mike Whiteley, who has been singing and strummin’ around the area for some time under the name of The Strum Lovin’ Criminal, is about to make a comeback with a new band.

The Strum Lovin’ Criminals now consists of Mike and Owen ‘The Fretless Kid’ Wilson of ChinchillaZilla fame on bass and former Music teacher Steve ‘Sidewinder’ Chapman on guitar.

Together they have performed some small gigs at Stan’s Sunday Showcase at The Anchor Hotel and will now make their headlining debut at The Tanners Arms in Horsham on Friday, August 12.

Mike, who is a singer and

songwriter said: “It has been fantastic to hear the extra sound these guys produce and I am honoured and privileged that they want to play alongside me.

“I am proud of my songs and now I hope they can be appreciated by an even wider audience. The next obvious step will be a drummer/percussionist to augment the line up. More musicians, more fun.”

Constant texts, Facebook messages, tweets about my body and getting chased by mobility scooters everyday is making my life a misery. My partner, Mildred, who is 87 is also the subject of abuse at knitting club. I’ve tried explaining to them they were one-night stands but to no avail. Please help.

Watch opera and National Theatre productions live via satellite, in HD The Capitol has launched its 2011/2012 Metropolitan Opera season and tickets are now on sale.

Performances are screened live via satellite in HD directly into the Capitol’s cinema and give audiences the opportunity to get up close and personal to the stunning shows.

The Capitol first began screening the New York Metropolitan Operas

back in the Autumn of 2009. Due to popular demand, they have continued screening the operas and tickets frequently sell out months in advance. So get your tickets for the next season now!

The Metropolitan Opera’s 2011/2012 season features the world’s leading singers, conductors, and stage directors in seven new

productions, including a world premiere and a Met premiere.

The season opens on Saturday, October 15, with the first ever Met performance of Donizetti’s Anna Bolena, starring Anna Netrebko in the first of two new productions. Laurent Pelly’s production of Manon follows the opening show on Saturday, April 7.

On Saturday, January 21, see the world premiere of The Enchanted Island, a pastiche of Baroque music and Shakespearean comedy. Plus Tony Award-winning stage directors Michael Grandage and Des McAnuff make their Met debuts with new productions of Don Giovanni on Saturday, October 29 and Faust on Saturday, December 10.

Following the success of the operas, in 2010 The Capitol joined The National Theatre Live initiative and began screening productions from The National Theatre in the cinema.

The National Theatre Live programme allows the best of British theatre to be broadcast live to cinemas around the world. To date, three productions in the 2011/2012 season have been announced and are now available to book at The Capitol.

The season opens with One Man, Two Guvnors, Richard Bean’s English version of Goldoni’s classic Italian comedy, starring James Corden. Although the live screening of this play in September has already sold out, there are still tickets for the ‘Encore’ (pre-recorded) screening on Sunday, September 25.

The Kitchen by Arnold Wesker will be broadcast live on Thursday, October 6 and Collaborators by John Hodge will be screened on Thursday, December 1.

Is it time for an ‘MOT’?

Not so long ago, the term MOT was concerned with the mechanics of your vehicle.

But the term has been adopted by life and fitness coaches to persuade us to treat our bodies and our lives to a regular review. August seems an ideal time so I thought I would have a go.

The old girl is chugging along quite nicely with a few niggles, essentially sound but not very exciting or speedy.

Adopting a regular maintenance programme will not leave me broke until the end of my shelf-life and will actually increase my fuel efficiency and longevity. So a walk and swim, combined with some gentle yoga, can be ideal.

So that is the bodywork sorted, but what about the overall system?

The spark which ignites the engine is the most important element, as

without this there would be no motion.

It is very tempting during the holidays to idle and coast through the days, but during this time we can focus on igniting the spark which spurs us on to great things.

The time spent daydreaming and imagining our futures is crucial to our wellbeing and can help inject enthusiasm and drive into us when we

return from holidays.

Revisiting childhood activities, through spending time with children and enjoying a spot of fishing or beach football, can revitalise you.

So it is a very simple process, really. Exercise a bit more and enjoy time with your family and you will reap the benefits. Quite handy as we are in the middle of the holiday season. Enjoy!

A facial: treat or torture?

As part of my work experience in London, I often have to try new beauty products or treatments in order to help the Beauty Editor or Director of the magazine I am working with to decide whether or not they are worth featuring in the magazine – it’s a tough job but somebody’s got to do it.

A couple of weeks ago I was asked by my Beauty Director to attend a facial on her behalf to celebrate the launch of the new Cleanser by Chanel.

I was understandably quite excited given that I was getting a complementary treatment which would normally cost hundreds of pounds using

products that, even in the beauty industry, aren’t that easy to come by.

So off I went to New Bond Street with high hopes for a very pleasant afternoon.

I didn’t feel as relaxed ‘and refreshed as I had hoped ’

Now, up until this point I had always had fairly good experiences with facials, I hadn’t had that many but the ones I had gone for had always followed the same or similar steps; cleanse, tone, moisturise, massage, moisturise some more. Lovely.

What took place that afternoon was a very different facial to the one I had envisioned.

My face was steamed - which brought back memories of times spent with my tea towel covered head leaning over a bowl of boiling hot water to ease a rotten cold, extracted – squeezed of all spots and blackheads and slapped – to stimulate blood flow (apparently).

After sixty minutes (surely the longest facial ever?) I didn’t feel as relaxed and refreshed as I had hoped.

In fact I felt quite the opposite.

And to top it off I was informed that it wasn’t sensible to apply make-up for the rest of the day, which meant that I had to travel across the centre of London and back to the office with a face as red as a baboon’s backside.

Brilliant. Next time the Beauty Director asks for volunteers or asks me to do her a favour, I’ll know not to be such a keeno.

Why I’m a cycling convert, thanks to The Resident Paul Chapman Health & Lifestyle

Inspired by The Resident’s article on Horsham area cycling routes, I launch Operation Cycle to Work.

I live in Dorking and work in central Horsham. My aim is to part-cycle more and more of the journey until I do the whole 14 miles. That’s a hugely ambitious 28 miles a day return journey.

It’s day one of the campaign and I dread it. I load the mountain bike into the back of my Ford Escort estate. At this stage me and The Bike are still good friends. Darker times lie ahead.

Before you sneer, look at my photo. I am a 54-year-old man with no cycling

history and only the odd tennis match in the “recent achievements” section of my CV. I work as a community mental health nurse so have little money to spare on a fitness project. I do own a neglected bike but haven’t ever cycled it regularly.

So, armed with complete cycling outfit supplied by Wilco, Lidl and Poundstretcher (total cost: £20) I sally forth.

First part of the journey is a doddle.

After all, I’m driving the car with bike in the back. However I park up at the south end of Longhurst Wood Road next to the scenic A264 and then it’s man and bike alone in perfect, er, harmony.

The first 10 yards are a breeze, then I decide to change gear. That’s when I discover the bike’s hidden agenda. It hates cyclists. For a tense 30 seconds nothing happens then, suddenly, it acts and I’m immediately in a gear hitherto unknown to humanity.

It’s Jerry the Cat pedalling in mid-air just before he realises he’s off a cliff edge and Tom the Mouse sniggers from safe terra firma. No warning: this gear jumps in complete random abandonment.

I quickly learn that when I change

gear I am buying a lottery ticket, taking a punt on the bike’s next whim. All I know for certain is that something will happen, but what and when is a mystery.

Day two brings new delights. First on the bill is a dead rabbit being eaten by a crew of magpies. Next up some blackberry pickers – again a gang of them (collective noun?).

I’m starting to really enjoy the country cycling, especially now The Bike has buried its grudges and is occasionally obeying my commands.

The sun is shining, the birds are singing and I feel a self-righteous joy as the endorphins pump round my body and my breathing deepens.

I have to take The Bike up two floors in the lift after losing an early parking dispute, but walking across the large open plan office I feel a sense of manly pride as I parade in all my bargain-basement cycling finery.

I catch what I am certain were a few admiring glances from female colleagues.

The truth is I’ve taken to cycling and am noticing I feel sharper mentally, more relaxed at the end of the day and really feel I deserve to enjoy my cold glass of beer on arriving home.

So, thank you The Resident. I’m a cycling convert. Cheap, healthy fun and good for the environment too. In Hip Central Horsham we’re surrounded by rural loveliness and more and more bike routes will undoubtedly be revealed.

Summer Cycling

The most fun you can have on two wheels Last week we started our series of cycling features, bringing you information on some of the most enjoyable and picturesque routes in the district.

In this week’s edition, explore some more leisurely routes, ideally for beginners or families with people of all abilities.

Route 1 Barns Green and Slinfold Enjoy the glorious countryside without having to venture too far from the centre of Horsham or Southwater. This route is ideal for those who want a more leisurely cycle, with very few rough stretches and largely flat routes, except for a one or two short steep climbs on tarmac.

You can enjoy wider bridleways and only brief bumpy off-road rides. And, the route finishes with a fun hill which you can practically

fly down – an exhilarating end to your cycling adventure.

Once you’ve found somewhere suitable to park (it can be tricky at the start in Barns Green) this is one of the most picturesque routes in the country, with an easy section that uses the Downs Cycle route.

Route 2 Henfield, Partridge Green and Ashurst Explore the wonder of wildlife and views along the River Adur, as well as some of the Downs Link.

The route can be harder in places, with some demanding off-road cycling at times. However, the beauty of the wooded glades and farmland make it all worthwhile. Begin in Henfield and continue on a journey that varied, and lots of fun.

I am thinking of letting out my property and would like to know what the basic obligations are for Landlords.

Landlords have a legal obligation to ensure that the tenants and their visitors have a safe environment in which to live. Safety regulations have been revised over the years, and penalties for non-compliance can be very severe. It is important to acknowledge that legislation can change significantly. I have given a brief summary of the important legislation which is outlined below.

Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1988 It is the landlords responsibility to ensure that any gas appliances or installation pipe work in the property is maintained in a safe condition so as to prevent risk of injury to any person by ensuring that all such appliances and pipe work are checked annually by an approved Gas Safe registered engineer and a written record produced.

The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 1994 A landlord must also ensure that electrical equipment is safe and will not cause danger and that it satisfies the safety requirements of the1994 Regulations by getting it checked by a qualified electrician.

Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) As of 1st October 2008 all properties being marketed as available to let are required to have an Energy Performance Assessment carried out and a certificate produced.

The former gatehouse to Beedings Castle has just come onto the market in the pretty hamlet of Nutbourne, near West Chiltington.

‘The Stone House’ was originally built in 1903 but has been cleverly extended over the years to create an exceptional family home which successfully combines plenty of quirky character with contemporary kitchen and bathrooms.

The couple have since lived there for eight years during which time they have extended and modernised ‘The Stone House’ to provide plenty of living space without losing the charm of the gatehouse.

The gardens, which extend to around two thirds of an acre, are a major feature of the property, as Kirsty explained: “There

are four distinct areas - a sunken walled courtyard which leads from the kitchen; a meadow and vegetable garden; a woodland copse, and a top lawn for the children to play on.”

On the top lawn is a summer house which has power and light so could be used throughout the year as a home office, children’s den or a guest room. “Friends who come and stay refer to the summer house as the ‘chalet in the garden’,” said Kirsty.

Tenancy Deposit Protection As of 6th April 2007 all Tenancy Deposits must be protected in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Tenancy Deposit Protection Scheme implemented under the Housing Act 2004 and apply to all Assured Shorthold Tenancies.

Insurance Landlords need to ensure that they have the appropriate building and contents insurance in place for renting a property. Not all insurance products cover let properties so it is important to check the policy cover.

Next generation CR-V Honda has released an image of the new CR-V Concept, providing the first official glimpse of styling direction.

The all-new, fourth-generation CR-V is set to go on sale in the United States by the end of 2011, and in Europe in Autumn 2012.

The new CR-V Concept embraces a distinctive and bold styling direction. Compared to the previous generation, the concept model takes on a more aggressive stance with deeper sculpting of the body lines and a bolder front fascia.

Records are set to be broken and history made as Don Wales and the Bluebird Electric team endeavour to break the UK Land Speed Record on the 4-mile stretch of beach at Pendine Sands, South Wales.

Last month the attempt was aborted when a vital bespoke component that was being manufactured in Europe was not delivered. Disappointed in the firm, the team sought to find a UK engineering manufacturer, and were delighted when Dorset-based Transdev stepped in to the breach and support the team.

Along with Transdev, the team has received overwhelming response from volunteers who are generously giving up their time to help marshal and assist the 30-strong Bluebird Electric team.

During the trials in August, Wales will be driving the current Bluebird Electric vehicle as a test and development vehicle to try different battery

Horsham U15 suffered disappointment in the regional finals day of the NatWest T20 competition.

Horsham batted first and progressed steadily, despite losing a wicket in the first over.

John Barron and Jonny Phelps put on 24 for the second wicket, but when Phelps (13) was caught in the deep, Horsham began to struggle.

Barron (24) top scored for the home side, but Nick Klein (10) was the only other batsman to make double figures as Horsham were bowled out for 74, the innings finishing with a brilliant hat-trick.

Woodford Wells looked in trouble when Klein picked up an LBW in his first over, but the Essex side won by four wickets with seven overs to spare.

The victors went on to comprehensively defeat Bexley in the regional final, while Horsham took on the other losing semi-finalists, Finchampstead, in the third place play-off.

Klein again made an early breakthrough, but a second-wicket partnership of 91 put the visitors in control.

Excellent, economical bowling at the death ensured Horsham remained very much in the hunt as the visitors finished on 140-6.

Horsham were 3-2 before Phelps (45) and Ben Shoare (26) put on 72

for the third wicket to keep them in the game.

Wickets then fell at regular intervals and despite a brave late effort from the lower order, including an unbeaten 28 by Hugh Turnbull, Horsham fell to an agonising one-run defeat.

Horsham coach David Shoare said: “It was a little bit disappointing that

we didn’t really set them a total in the first game. They bowled at us very well.

“To lose the second game by one run was a little disheartening, but it was a much better performance.

“It was a very good day. We qualified, which was the main thing, and it was good to be in front of a home crowd.”

Horsham Junior Baseball Club players observed a minute’s silence in tribute to former coach Billy Hungrecker, who died at home in Las Vegas.

Umpire Larry Rushin said of the former Worthing Bears basketball player: “He was a big man with an enthusiasm in all he did that put many others to shame.

“Billy wasn’t a shouter or demanding. He accepted that many of the kids we were coaching were new to the game of baseball and was therefore always patient with them.

“He recognised that kids here were brought up on soccer and cricket, so his coaching was to get the basics right and the good/spectacular plays would follow.

“Billy will always be remembered by me and all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.”

The Athletics (7 and 2) won the Slinfold Country Club Bronco Pony League, while the Yankees (8 and 1) beat the Red Sox 14-2 and topped the Clover Construction Mustang League.

Making a welcome return to action after his serious bike accident, pitcher Kyle Otto recorded three strikeouts for the A’s at the weekend.

Historic ‘flight’ by North West Sussex Seagulls The North West Sussex Seagulls (NWSS) made their first group trip to the American Express Community Stadium, Falmer, as Brighton and Hove Albion played Tottenham Hotspur.

The prestige friendly on Saturday was the opening first-team match at The Amex, the spectacular 22,500seat home of Gus Poyet’s League 1 champions.

Starting on the route used by the old Blue and Whites supporters’ club, the NWSS coach stopped several times in Horsham before picking up other excited fans at Southwater and

Cowfold. By its final stop in Henfield there was not a spare seat to be had.

Spurs won the match 3-2, but not before Ashley Barnes had scored the opening first-team goal at The Amex as Albion played excellent football for 40 minutes.

The Seagulls, who play Doncaster Rovers in the first league match at The Amex, will feature prominently on the BBC’s Football Focus and Football League Show tomorrow (Saturday).

So with the cricket season in full swing (sorry about that), the football season is about to start.

I sat watching TV while England’s batsmen, including Sussex’s Matt Prior, put the Indian bowling attack to the sword, but I have been thinking about tomorrow (Saturday).

This is when the real football starts. Albion will take on Doncaster Rovers in the Championship at The Amex, the first league match there.

Scottish football is already well underway and the pantomime of the Premier League doesn’t start until next weekend, but tomorrow is when Championship football takes centre stage.

When the weather is at its hottest, the children are all off school and families are away on holiday, it always seems strange that the football season starts again.

The beginning of the season is always odd. T-shirts and shorts are normally the order of the day, but eating ice cream while watching a match just doesn’t feel right.

The heavy coats, like the old dead sheep that John Motson used to wear, don’t usually make an appearance until November, but that’s when football feels right.

When you can see the breath of the players, when steam is coming off their backs and off your scalding tea at about the same rate, when you need to clap and cheer just to stay warm. That’s when football seems right to me.

Years ago, one mid-Winter evening, I remember standing in the North Stand at the Goldstone. Nothing much was happening on the pitch and in any case I don’t think I could have seen it through the freezing fog.

What I do remember was watching the icicles slowly growing from the crossbar that Perry Digweed was running up and down in front of to keep warm. That was a cold night, but that’s what football is to me.

So here we are in the middle of Summer, looking forward to tomorrow when it’s bound to be the hottest day of the year.

Just remember, when we are expecting the players to run their socks off and chase every ball (even those no-hope through-balls that Albion Flyer the greyhound would have trouble catching), we will probably find it hard work just to walk up a few steps to our nice padded seats and eat our ice creams before they melt!

But that won’t stop me shouting at any player I think is slacking and not sweating blood, because that’s what football is all about to me.

No half measures in spectacle Athletics

The Barns Green Half Marathon will take place on Sunday, October 30.

Last year, more than 1,800 runners took part in the race, which follows a route around the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater, through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex.

The annual event was started in 1982 by Barns Green Football Club, to raise money for Muntham School when the school allowed the club to use floodlit facilities for training.

The last race was won by a superb Kenyan athlete, 20-year-old Edwin Kipyego, who ran an astonishing race to finish in 1.04.28, almost six minutes ahead of his closest rival. He knocked 21 seconds off the course record, which had stood for 24 years.

But the race is not just for serious athletes. Runners of all abilities take part, making it one of the village’s great spectacles and raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity.

Last year, 104 volunteer helpers gave their time before and during the race. A small army of helpers from in and around Barns Green, many from local sports clubs and youth organisations, help ensure the event runs smoothly.

Barriers, road closure and race information signs are put up from 6am on race day and four teams of car parking marshals deal with more than 1,000 cars.

In the village hall, volunteers register all the runners and issue them with running numbers and timing tags. Helpers distribute T-shirts and other merchandise.

A large team of marshals line the 13-mile route, officials drive in front of and behind the runners, helpers hand out drinks at four refreshment stations and others distribute medals and goody bags to every runner at the finish.

Sport in Brief Triathlon Horsham Amphibians Triathlon Club will stage its traditional Southwater Relay Sprint Triathlon on Sunday, September 4.

About 130 teams of three are expected to take part, each individual competitor swimming 400m in Southwater Lake, then cycling 18.5km from Southwater to Coolham and back up the A24, and running twice around the park, a distance of 3.8km.

Alex Sheppard, a first-time triathlete last year, said of the relay: “I had a great day, It was really well organised and it was a good triathlon to try for the first time. I’m going to do it again this year.”

Horsham Amphibians Triathlon is based at Christ’s Hospital Sports Centre and has members aged from 15 to 80, from Horsham district and beyond, including Brighton, Worthing and Guildford.

The club runs a full programme of training sessions throughout the year, led by head coach Mark Ticker. These include time trials, swimming, track and open water swimming.

Members participate and compete at all levels, from novice to international elite, over distances from tri-atri to ironman. Trips to France, Wales and Dartmoor are also organised.

Youth Swimming Issy Dunlop swam in the 200m breast at the British Gas National Youth Championships in Sheffield and recorded her fastest long course time of 2011.

Cam Lambourne, who has been dogged by illness in recent months, was still good enough to make the semi-finals of the 50m free.

Notching up two personal bests (PBs), he was the third-fastest 15-year-old and a reserve for the semis in the 100m free.

Katy Harris achieved a time of 1.07.12 in the 100m back, just outside her PB.

Why Horsham’s a happy hunting ground for Sussex – Robinson James Herd Cricket

Sussex will head to Horsham next week, hoping to continue their fine form at the ground over the past few years.

The Horsham Festival has been a happy hunting ground for the county in recent history – and festival cricket is something coach Mark Robinson enjoys.

He told The Resident: “We love all our festivals, at Arundel and Horsham. It’s good to be so close to the crowds, it has a different feel and we’ve been well looked after at Horsham.

“The club makes a fantastic commitment to us. They go out of their way to make us feel really welcome and give us what we want.”

Last year, Sussex thrashed Derbyshire on their way to promotion in the County Championship, then beat Somerset in a thrilling, rain-affected Clydesdale Bank 40-over game.

Horsham is traditionally good for batting. Ed Joyce, Chris Nash, Ben Brown and Murray Goodwin each

scored a century in the Championship match last year.

Robinson said: “We have a good record at Horsham and we’ve played well over the last couple of years.

“In general we’ve been able to get what we would like out of the wicket.

The groundsman has been able to provide a wicket that suits us, which is obviously paramount, because it is home advantage and you want to make it pay.”

Sussex will be weakened by the loss of former Horsham batsman Chris Nash, who will be representing England Lions against Sri Lanka A. Robinson added: “Nash is a very dependable player for us – the rock that you can build a team around.

“It is a very valuable asset when you have somebody as reliable as Chris.”

But the former Tanbridge House School pupil is not the only success story to come out of Horsham Cricket Club in recent history. Robin MartinJenkins starred with bat and ball for Sussex for many years and Will Beer

was an integral part of Sussex’s 2009 T20 Cup win.

Robinson acknowledged: “All club cricket is important because it’s the lifeblood of the county. It’s your feeder and Horsham have been very strong in recent times.”

Sussex will take on relegationthreatened Worcestershire in a fourday match from Wednesday next week.

The two sides will also meet on Sunday week in the CB40. Sussex top their group with seven wins from their eight games, while Worcestershire have managed only one win so far.

Robinson said: “What you have to do is try to cancel out what they’ve got and build on your own strengths.

“They have one of the best spinners in the world in Saeed Ajmal. We know we’re going to have to play well against him.”

Before visiting Horsham, Sussex will play their T20 Cup quarter-final against Lancashire at the PROBIZ County Ground, Hove, on Monday.

A strong team win puts Horsham top of the league, 15 points ahead of Hastings and 22 above Preston Nomads, having played a game more than both.

Chichester won the toss and got off to a solid start with an opening stand of 55, but wickets fell in clusters. The score soon became 85-4, with Luke Fisher dismissing three of the top four batsmen.

A promising stand followed, but wickets tumbled again as the hosts subsided to an inadequate 186 all out, skipper Mark Bamford top scoring with 52.

Owain Jones took 3-20, Fisher 3-36 and Michael Munday 3-47, while Sam Bell picked up two stumpings and a catch.

Horsham built a firm platform with useful stands for the first and second wickets, enabling them to reach 1713 before a flurry of dismissals.

But the result was never in doubt and victory was secured after just 36 overs, despite Richard Logan’s 3-40.

Jones led the reply with 64, supported by useful contributions from captain Craig Gallagher, James Johnson, John Burroughs, Devon Endersby and Matt Henry.

Relegation beckons for Chi as they have lost nine of their 14 matches, with only Pulborough below them.

have a local derby at Roffey, who are always tough to beat on their ground and will be determined to avenge their defeat at Cricketfield Road.

After a free week during the Sussex Festival, Horsham have an away game against mid-table Brighton and Hove followed by home matches against their two title rivals – Preston Nomads and Hastings.

Roffey were disappointed to be overturned by lowly Eastbourne after posting only 145 at The Saffrons, despite Josh Fleming’s 56.

Sussex regular Ollie Rayner (3-11) and former Sussex and England paceman Ed Giddins (3-22) were the principal destroyers, while Stuart Pulford grabbed 3-59.

Mark Tomsett notched up 30 in reply, but top scorer Dan Wells, younger brother of Sussex batsman Luke, was the batting star with 59.

Cricket Opening batsman Jonny Willis broke Nuthurst’s club record by hitting an unbeaten 157 against Dormansland.

He shared a second-wicket partnership of 190 with Adrian Peckover (30 not out), beating Howard Holdsworth’s individual record of 147 which had stood since 1987.

Willis was dropped on nine and survived two stumping chances during his memorable knock, which enabled his side to declare on 232-1 in a drawn match.

Nuthurst (193-7) finished one wicket short of victory in a draw against Crowhurst (176-9).

Tourists Aston Ingham, from the Gloucestershire-Herefordshire border, racked up 224-5 against the Nutters, thanks to an unbroken sixthwicket partnership of 169.

Bob Samways was unbeaten on 50 as the home side held on for a draw.

Hastings (120-2) beat Horsham 119-7 (Sam Cushing 48) and Preston Nomads (70-2) beat Billingshurst (66) in the semi-finals of the Sussex T20 Cup. Preston Nomads won the final and will contest the area finals at Guildford against the winners from Hampshire, Surrey and Kent.
