WINTER SAFETY CHECK The feel-good factor returned to Horsham last week, thanks to an array of community-focused events. The Town Festival and the inaugural Horsham Fireworks display helped create a carnival atmosphere over the weekend. The Festival was boosted by
the Old Mill Steam Fair, while East Street hosted the market for the first time. Horsham’s best bands competed in the Battle of the Bands final of Friday night, with veterans of the local music scene, Everafta, proving victorious. And on Saturday night,
2,000 people were at Horsham Cricket and Sports Club for a huge fireworks display, hailed a great success by organisers. There’s much more to look forward to over the next couple of weeks. With the district council lacking the funds to light up Horsham over Christmas as they once could, Piries
Place businesses have picked up the baton and are preparing for a lights ‘switch-onevent on 13th November, with Horsham Rugby Club staging another big fireworks display this Saturday night.

for its big festive lights switch on, coming up on 13th November. With the Old Mill Steam Fair providing the all-important carnival atmosphere, daily musical entertainment enhanced the feel-good factor with a range of styles to suit all tastes, from Glam Rock and West End show-tunes to rock and pop, jazz and karaoke. Halloween characters including a double-headed monster, gothic stilt-walking musicians, skeletons, magicians, witches, clowns or even a crystal-ball juggling ghoul also contributed to the colourful scenes. The Rotary Club of Horsham was on hand throughout the Festival and, thanks to the generosity of the Horsham public, raised over £500 for charity through Halloween mask-making workshops in Swan Walk, pumpkin games in the Carfax and the Trick or Treat Shops Competition around Horsham town centre. For all the little ones who enjoyed dressing up this Halloween there was the opportunity to show off their costumes in a Halloween Fancy Dress Competition on Saturday which saw children’s TV celebrity Dave Benson Phillips leading a parade of little ‘monsters’ though the town before judging took place around the bandstand. The Non Stop Party Shop in Horsham offered some great prizes to the winners. The winners were James Keegan (9-11 years), Aiden Dargue (6-8) and Sophie Dickinson (3-5). On Saturday, the weather

There was a carnival atmosphere in the town during the Festival couldn’t make its mind up, but local choirs on the bandstand braved the occasional downpours to treat the enthusiastic audience with a musical showcase led by Kaytie Harding of Voice from the Coal Shed. The energy was cranked up further by mid afternoon with a first for Horsham: a Sing-along-a Monster Hits by Hot Shots Karaoke with Rhian

On paper, there didn’t seem to be any individual event or attraction at the Horsham Festival that was worth making a huge song and dance over. Music by a number of local musical groups and choirs, some fancy dress competitions, a few fairground rides and the installation of a few new Christmas lights hardly made it the ‘must-see’ event of the year. But coupled with Horsham’s ever-growing love for Halloween (helped by town pubs that have increasingly encouraged revellers to don fancy dress in recent years) the three day festival did have one trump card - the feel good factor. it was as
Hilton. Song sheets were provided and everyone in the crowd joined in Halloween smashers such as Ghost Busters, the Monster Mash, and Time Warp. Local dance group Extreme Beatz were superb with their fancy dress and sharp dance moves as up to 70 of the youngsters filled the area around the bandstand danc-

Sarah Hogben, the Council’s Marketing and Events Manager, said: “This is the 18th year that Horsham has hosted a Half Term Festival with the event well established in the Horsham calendar.
“We aim to offer some great low cost entertainment for families during the Half Term holidays as well as offering something that little bit special to draw in new visitors every year. “It’s always a delight to see people coming into Horsham to enjoy the festival atmosphere and our work with the Horsham Rotary Club’s ‘Trick or Treat Trail’ is an entertaining way of encouraging people to discover

Mayor change on the cards? Would you like Horsham to have a mayor or should we stick more to the current council format? Are you bothered either way? It’s unlikely to be something you have given much thought to, but you might want to consider, since we’ve all been invited to give an opinion... Legal requirements mean that a change is required to the way that Horsham District Council is led, and we can all get involved in the consultation. The Council has to decide between two types of governance – the “Elected Mayor” and Cabinet or “Strong Leader” and Cabinet. Horsham District Council has expressed a preference for a Strong Leader and Cabinet, but before the final decision is made the public have been invited to pass comment. In this ‘strong leader’ system, the Leader would be a councillor, elected by the Council at its first annual meeting after the local elections in 2011 to hold office for four years. Or we could all have a bit of fun and go for a mayor! This has its plus points. Firstly, we - that’s the electorate - votes for the mayor. This could have its benefits, as a competitive campaign could lead to a candidate vowing to better represent general public opinion on certain matters in the council. For example, anyone vowing to bring back the Christmas lights
and get Cheryl Cole to turn them on is going to be hard to beat! And secondly, the mayoral system might just entice younger voters to go to the polls on local elections day. In the ‘Strong Leader’ format, the Leader would appoint a Cabinet of at least two other Councillors, including a Deputy Leader. The Leader and Cabinet would run the Council’s main services, but the full Council would continue to set the budget and main policies for Council services. It’s not a whole lot different to the current set-up. If the Mayor system was adopted, the mayor would be elected directly by the electorate of the Horsham District for a four year period, in addition to the current 44 Councillors, who are also elected for a four year term of office. The Mayor would be responsible for appointing at least two Councillors to a Cabinet, including a Deputy Mayor who would act in the Mayor’s absence. The Mayor and Cabinet would run services in accordance with the policies and budget agreed by the Council.

Mayor Jim Duggan?
Mayor John O’Sullivan?
Could either of these popular Horsham people do a good job as mayor? With Peace campaigner Jim Duggan at the helm, we might get some new housing built, but Horsham would never become a nuclear power. Comedian and shop owner John O’Sullivan might add some colourful policies (and language!) to the council chambers and he does have some political ambition.

Everafta and Tom Viney receive their trophy from Mandy Ansell (centre) Stragglers opened the show and gave it everything. Determined to go one better than their runner-up spot in 2009, they were on the money from the first note, their phrasing and dynamics were perfect yet they still gave the impression they were just mates
jamming together. Ali (bass) and Andy(drums) played as a single unit over which Lee’s guitar and his voice by turns growled, sang and screamed out their trademark disturbing melodies. The Brilliantly Simple were as surprised as anyone to
make the final on audience vote and had come fresh from playing to “six people in Staines” to upwards of 300 and still counting. I could see the trepidation in the singer’s eyes during their opening number but they soon settled and started to enjoy the expe-
rience. They haven’t quite settled on their style yet but their songs are catchy and they play with skill and energy and put on a good show. For only their second proper gig Killing Vegas were outstanding. Singer Dom has
been the revelation of this competition and he made good use of his vocal effects especially the harmoniser. Chip(drums) Pablo(bass) and Matt(guitar) deliver melodic

Continued from Page 6... rock with a touch of prog/metal and were tight in every department, you felt that not a single note was wasted and their starts and endings were razor sharp. From experience to youth, Retrospect may be only the second instrumental band ever to appear in the final, and this was at the first time of asking which is impressive in itself. They played their funky melodies to a by now packed Drill Hall and showed why they’re a class act with loads of potential. Chris and Sam, who switched between drums and keys, set up the grooves to allow the sax players Dan & Matt to carry the melody and lead the crowd in the occasional arm-waving exercise. I have to declare an interest here as for years I’ve been a card carrying, t-shirt wearing fan of Everafta in all their incarnations. They’ve always made the final whenever they have entered but they jinx the weather so they’ve never played at the Carfax! From Kris’s invocation to the capacity Hall “You got in for free so work!” before
launching into “Natural Born Killers” I knew they were really up for it and delivered one of the best if not the best performance I’ve ever seen from them. Matt’s voice was great and Phil’s backing vocals were superb, while new girl drummer Kate was amazing. Their songs are quality, as they’ve moved towards AOR from their punk beginnings but haven’t lost their edge and can still write a killer tune and put in a 100% performance. I was never into Hip-Hop but the last band Phrase Mob may have me converted. The surprise package of last year’s final kicked off with their two best songs “Up in the Junkyard” and “Thug” before launching into some old-school hip-hop numbers. Their lyrics are clever, thought-provoking and relevant and delivered with total honesty and lack of pretentiousness by MCs Matt and Dan. The addition of a live rather than sampled girl singer really gave the sound a new dimension over the backing tracks mixed by DJs Andy & Ben and I particu-

There was a moment, right at the end of the inaugural Horsham Fireworks night at Horsham Cricket and Sports Club on Saturday, when you could be forgiven for missing the old council-organised display in the Carfax. After a tremendous finale, provided by Wisborough Green pyrotechnics experts Aurora, a huge display rack of small, sparkling fireworks spelled out the name of sponsors, Strutt & Parker. You can’t argue that the estate agency, new to town, deserved something significant for its sponsorship, or that a
new fireworks display doesn’t need such support in order to provide a display of this magnitude. But there was a tinge of sadness, a tiny percentage of regret, at the realisation that it is now down to individuals and local companies to organise and finance the biggest town centre fireworks display. Nonetheless, great credit to all of those behind the fireworks display, which was watched by nearly 2,000 people enjoying a spectacular display. The weather was

Fine weather ensured there was a family atmosphere for the display Continued from Page 8 well as music during and after the event. Other food available included a hog roast and Japanese style food by Wabi and Just My Sushi. The display was accompanied by music and the club pavilion, with its terraced seating, was an ideal viewing spot for many of those attending. Security, if anything was too good. There was little chance for imaginative youths to sneak in for free through the Causeway end. In fact, it was harder to breach, even at night, than the Sussex County Cricket match! The event was supported by sponsorship from local companies including Strutt & Parker, Wabi, Barclays and
Strategic Internet Consulting. Over 40 volunteers from all the sections of the Cricket and Sports Club acted as stewards, and ran a BBQ and outside bar whilst colts from the hockey and cricket sections sold glowies, which proved extremely popular with youngsters at a pound a pop. Sainsbury’s kindly agreed use of their car park for the evening as the club was car free for the evening. Chris Wassell, chairman of the organising committee, was delighted with the success of the event which was well supported by both club members and the public. He said: “We have been thrilled by the response to the event – It was the first we have ever run at the club and it exceeded all our expecta-
tions – not only have we have raised some money for own club funds but we are also delighted to be giving £500 to our chosen charity – The Springboard Project - which is based in Horsham and is a community based charity providing safe, accessible, inclusive play and recreation facilities to children of all abilities.” It was indeed a well organised and enjoyable event, and Aurora put on a marvellous event (they will be back, at the display at Horsham Rugby Club on Saturday night). We do have one, minor complaint though. £3 for a (burnt) ‘sausage in a bun’ was, on such a great night, daylight robbery! In comparison, Wabi’s wings looked a marvellous buy!

Children show off their efforts in the best decorated pumpkin category While many of us had fun just carving weird and wonderful faces on to our pumpkins, they adopted a different tact at Camelia Botnar. The Homes and Gardens Centre in Littleworth Lane was simply after the biggest specimens for a competition on 30th October. There was a lot of support from the centre’s customers and families living in the area,
and is is hoped the competition will be repeated next year. There were lots of entries for all three categories of the competition and whilst the judging was taking place the crowd enjoyed the delicious Pumpkin Soup made by the Chefs in the Bistro. The Giant Pumpkin competition was won with a whopper weighing in at 103 kgs grown by Leigh Tucker, Es-
tates Manager at Camelia Botnar Foundation. There were also prizes for the Best Decorated Pumpkin Competition and also a Giant Pumpkin Competition for the children. Camela Botnar’s next events will be the late night shopping extravaganzas on the 1st and 8th December at 5.30- 9pm with Father Christmas, Morris Dancing and much more planned.

Safe as houses
Homeowners in Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding can holiday in the knowledge that their houses are safe, thanks to the re-introduction of a service set up in the area. The Away from Home scheme, set up by the Neighbourhood Wardens in Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding, was launched in 2007. Paul Conroy, new Neighbourhood Warden for Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding, who started in October, is very supportive of Away From Home having operated a similar scheme in Ashington. He said: “I think the Away From Home scheme is a great idea. It gives great peace of mind and re assurance to residents, particularly if they’re on holiday or in hospital." The scheme is a free service to all residents who are away from their property for a length of time, for example, whilst on holiday. To ensure their house is safe, the resident tells
the Neighbourhood Warden of their departure date, and expected date of return to the property. The homeowner also gives the contact name and number of a key holder for the property, and any planned visitors, for example people working on the property or someone feeding pets. As part of their daily patrols, the wardens will keep an eye on the property. If anything looks suspicious or the property looks vulnerable (for example if there is a lot of post noticeable at the door) the wardens will then contact the key holder, or if necessary Sussex Police. The use of the key holder prevents the need for wardens to ever enter the property.
For more information on the Away from Home scheme, contact Paul Conroy and Paul Sweeney on 01903 813236, or email the Wardens at south.wardens@horsham.gov.uk

Happy Halloween for brave Kieran Remembrance
The War Memorial in the Carfax will be the focus of this year’s Remembrance Sunday service in Horsham at 11am on 14th November. The timings for the service will see the Parade arrive at Horsham’s War Memorial at approximately 10.50am on Sunday. The Service will be led by The Revd Canon Guy Bridgewater, the Vicar of Horsham, and the two minutes silence, in memory of the fallen, will be held at 11am. The Chairman of Horsham District Council, Cllr Brian Donnelly, will lead the wreath laying on behalf of the people of the Horsham District. He will be followed by Mr Gerry Harris, Chairman of the RBL Horsham
Branch, and Air Cadet Sophie O'Shea will lay a wreath on behalf of The Rt. Hon Francis Maude MP, MP for Horsham. Captain Michael Lloyd RD** RNR MN will then lay a wreath on behalf of the Merchant Navy. Representatives of the armed services and youth organisations will then lay their wreaths, each as a mark of solemn respect. A church service follows at the Parish Church of St. Mary The Virgin in the Causeway, Horsham to which everyone is invited. After the service, the Parade will leave the Causeway and march back through the Carfax where the salute will be taken by Cllr Donnelly and Mr Harris.
Life hasn’t always been easy for Kieran Shaw. Now aged six, he has been in and out of hospital for operations since birth, when it was discovered that his Oesophagus was connected to his lungs and not his stomach. Back in March 2004, he was transferred to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, where he was successfully operated on by Dr Eric Nicholls. Since then, Dr Nicholls has operated on young Kieran another six times, and while he still must undergo treatment as he grows, Kieran is able to lead a happy and active life. This is all thanks to the efforts of the medical team at St George’s Hospital. But Kieran’s parents, Danny and Sarah,
have found a way to thank the hospital for all they have done for their son, who attends Warnham Primary School. As Landlords of the Dog and Duck in Kingsfold, and formed a charity in aid of St George’s Paediatric Department. Since 2006, Dr Nicholls has been presented

Hair Removal. It is especially worrying for those with darker skin pigmentation, i.e. Asian and African type skins as the risk associated with the therapies can be higher. At The Sussex Beauty Clinic NDYag class 4 laser has been specifically chosen as it alleviates the risks. Suitable for the very fairest white skin - type I up to level VI, the very darkest skin tone, NDYag class 4 carries none of the pigmentation risks that sometimes get associated with Laser Hair Removal. It has come to the attention of Susan Hawes the Clinical Director of The Sussex Beauty Clinic, that many clients have been offered laser therapy only to be supplied with IPL (Intense Pulse Light). Here she answers some frequently asked questions. Q. How does the treatment work? A. The Bio-MEDICAL Concepts hair removal treatments work by emitting a controlled heat source to the hair, which is then electively absorbed by the melanin in the hair, this then creates heat which damages the growth and the follicle. After several treatments the subsequent damage to the hair follicle results in a significant reduction in hair growth. Q. Is the hair removal treatment painful? A. The treatment process is gentle, non-invasive and requires no anaesthetic. Most people who
The Sussex Beauty Clinic
experience the treatment feel nothing more than a slight warmth or tingling sensation. Q. How many treatments will I need? A. Many factors influence hair growth, age, ethnicity, weight, metabolism, medication and hormones all play a part of where and when hair grows. Following your FREE in-depth consultation and patch test, we will advise you of realistic expectations. As a general average 6 - 12 treatments are required. Q. Is the treatment safe? A. Yes, treatments provide you with safe, effective and proven technology. Q. What areas of the body can be treated? A. All areas, as the treatment is gentle and noninvasive it can provide effective treatment for all areas of the body. Phone The Sussex Beauty Clinic now on 01403 241341 and speak to one of our laser technicians who will advise you on a treatment plan to achieve your optimum results.

HAODS hotties bare all for charity shots There have been all sorts of shenanigans at a Horsham theatre group’s recent meetings. While it all looks a little saucy, the rehearsals for Kiss Me Kate, showing next week at the Capitol theatre, have been fairly timid compared to what else has been happening of late. The ladies of Horsham Amateur Operatic and Dramatics Society (HAODS) have recently put together a calendar, in aid of charity. Inspired by the Calendar Girls film, starring Helen Mirren, it involves the women wearing, well, not a great deal except some strategically placed props! The HAODS Hot-
ties calendar features girls as various characters from past productions, with proceeds split between St Catherine’s Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support. HAODS regular Roz Hall had the idea for a calendar after her mum Anthea died six months ago. Roz said: “I put something up on Facebook about the idea and everyone loved it. They all started posting their own ideas for pictures, so we had to cut it all down and use the best ideas. “There’s a real mix in there. We have Kiss Me Kate as the front cover, and there’s also My Fair Lady, Chicago, Sound of Music and more.” The calendar will be on sale, priced £8.50, at the forthcoming showings of Kiss Me Kate at the Capitol on 9th-13th November. Direction for this production of Cole Porter’s classic is by Heather Kemeys, and choreography is by Jackie Shepherd. Musical direction is by Brian D Steel, who will be conducting his 21st HAODS show, together with his regular orchestra. Lee Power plays Frederick C Graham, with Debby Field playing Lilli Vanessi. Other main parts are taken by Gustavo Fryatt, Katy Kinsella, Tim Shepherd and Chris Shanks.

news
Blowers’ irreverent take on modern life Seeing as Horsham’s shops have already started selling festive crackers and the kids are writing out lists to Santa, it seems we have to accept it...Christmas is coming. If you get stuck for presents though, and you find yourself entering soap basket/underwear/book voucher territory, why not have a look at the Capitol’s website for what’s on next year? It could be you could buy a ticket to a great show. 2011 looks promising already - there’s Roary the Racing Car, The Gruffalo’s Child and Fireman Sam for the youngsters, Chris Packham’s A Wild Life Exposed and High School Musical for older children, and the likes of Barry Cryer and The Searchers for the older generation. There’s plenty of music too Chas and Dave are in Horsham next April and the Manfreds drop by in March. But next up is sports journalist Blowers, previously known as Henry Blofeld, on Sunday, 14th November at 7.30pm Whenever Blowers is at the microphone, laughter is never far away. He has an irreverent approach to life, he often gets his knickers in a twist and everything he says, in the commentary box or on the stage, is often tinged with more than a humorous touch of wickedness. Of course hysterically funny
stories will be the staple diet. His new show combines all these attributes as he pokes fun at every aspect of his life, mocks pomposity and pretentiousness and there is no one he laughs more at than himself. He spends a good deal of the

time with egg all over his face. This show has two new parts to it. Blowers is a self-confessed outrageously stuffy old fart who cannot stand much that goes on in life today. When it comes to things like Political Correctness, good old
‘Elf and Safety, the European Union and all those beloved unelected whatnots in Brussels that try and rules our lives, he becomes, if not apoplectic, at least singularly grumpy. For example, the disappearance of old fashioned light bulbs has given him a distinctly unpleasant shock and has sent him back to his optician. When it comes to such things, no holds barred, Blowers gives it everything in a good mix of humour, common sense and ridiculousness. He descends like several tons of bricks where he has to. He is constantly flexing his muscles in these directions throughout the show. The other difference is that in the last half an hour of the show, Blowers hands the stage over to the audience and answers their questions. He will take anything from inter-galactic travel to cricket, from horticulture to mountaineering, from William Shakespeare to John le Carre, from the absurd to the ridiculous - not that he knows anything about any of them! But that won’t stop him and it will all be a lot of fun from first laugh to last. You mustn’t miss it.
Tickets cost £17.50 (Concessions £15.50) from the Box Office on 01403 750220 or online at www.thecapitolhorsham.com

All fired up for winter! to mix nature and technology to dazzle and amaze all ages! Another interesting sight this week, was the setting up of the annual Christmas lights in the town and this leads us to start thinking of another season of lights which is fast approaching . One in three of us have, apparently, started Christmas shopping with the purchase of alcohol and food at the top of the list!
If the thought of all this over indulgence, threatening to envelop us, worries you, then there are plenty of options available in this feature, to tone and trim so you can confidently cope with the tide of parties! Talking of parties, my thoughts turn to shoppng for that little black or red dress so that the fireworks will fly! We can all dream,
but to help make it a reality, we can elicit the support of a personal trainer and Victoria at My-Pro-Fitness.co.uk.has joined us this week to give us a few tips. If you prefer a group approach to exercise then I thoroughly recommend Sue Caile’s friendly classes to shape up and tone up! We can all be fire crackers this Christmas! The countdown to Christmas requires a great deal of organisation in advance, if you are not to end up frazzled, stressed and too tired to enjoy the season fully. However, I quite like the scene in the film ‘Serendipity’ where two ‘destined to be’, lovers, meet in a department store on Christmas Eve as they are rushing to find a Christmas last minute gift for their respective partners. When you realise the gift is a pair of gloves (woolly ones to boot!)
though, you know that those relationships are doomed ! So if you want to buy your loved ones a special gift and save money and time, read about my exciting discovery in the’ My Shopping Genie’ article. This helps you source the best price for potential purchases. Mmm, I wonder how much a Tiffany diamond necklace would be? As we are touching on the costs of the festive season, we have also been warned that utility bills are set to rise significantly again, so if you need to save money, do not forget the excellent discount card from Utility Warehouse which offers a 5% discount on your shopping and can earn you substantial discounts from your winter fuel bill. With the money you save, you can buy yourself a little treat such as a wonderful facial from the Retreat at Slinfold
Golf and Country Club and imagine yourself transported back to a haven of peace and tranquility amongst all this frenzied activity! Finally Janine Lowe, our feng shui expert gives us advice on how to have the charisma and sparkle of a firework at parties by paying attention to the South area of our home which is linked with fame and recognition. Who knows we could all be celebrities? But, of course we all know that! Enjoy!

Welcome again to the pages where we help you find ideas to lighten and brighten your life and introduce you to a range of services designed to enhance your lifestyle. Well, as this year is galloping away and we find ourselves once more in the dark days and nights, we can rejoice in the glorious fireworks which illuminate the sky and herald in the winter. If any of you were lucky enough to see the marvellous vista of lights created on Saturday 30th October by the Horsham Cricket Club, then you will surely agree that fireworks can truely be awe inspiring and lift the spirit as the colours and lights flash, whirl, whizz and cascade down through the inky darkness. This man made light shower is surely unique in its ability

Head south for fame!
Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art which explores the use of the five elements; fire, earth, water, wood and metal in a space. Feng shui expert, Janine Lowe gives us advice this week on how to optimise our chances of recogniton and joy in our lives through the organisation of our home and business. “With bonfire night and fireworks all around us, our thoughts turn to celebration and entertainment and we
can increase those aspects of our lives through attention to the South in the Lo Shu of our homes or businesses. This area is associated with the colour red and the number 9 with the months of May to August being the most powerful as the sun is at its strongest. To encourage fame, joy and recognition, you can place spiky plants such as cacti alongside pictures with red, orange and yellow in them. Blue should be avoided

Victoria helps you take plum place at the party With the party season fast approaching, we all want to look our best and dazzle in our party frock rather than fade into the wallpaper. You may have set your eye on your a new dress and want to ensure that your figure is in tip top shape to really make a impression! Victoria, of MyPro-Fitness is on hand to help you reach your goal in a few short weeks. Her expertise and experience can make all the difference as she can provide friendly, motivational guidance to keep you on
target. Here she shares some key tips with us which can easily be incorporated into our lives.
1 We all know fruit is good and provides vitamins and fibre but beware of sugar rich juices! 2 White meat has less calories and fat than red meat so opt for chicken, fowl or fish rather than sausages or beef. 3 Cut down on salt as this can help increase obesity. 4 Alcohol contains a large
amount of sugar so cut down on this too. 5 Whole wheat flour and bread provide fibre and are a far better option than white flour. 6 Sit up ! Slouching gives even the slimmest people the illusion of a belly !
Victoria has many more useful tips which can be found on her website: www.my-pro-fitness.co.uk For personal training contact Victoria on 07796920133.
My-pro-fitness offers you:

Let the Genie out of the Lamp and put your feet up! We all long for more time and a little more money, so when I heard the exciting news this week about a new computer application which not only takes the leg work out of shopping but also finds you the very best prices online, I had to share it with you. Instead of trawling through different sites to find the best value, the MyShopping Genie does it all for you at a click of a button! The genie has recently found such gems as a vacuum cleaner which was nearly £100 below the list price and as Christmas approaches, (48 days to go!), it can really come into its own. Testimonial: “My daughter wanted the new blackberry model 8520 for her birthday. All the shops had it for sale for £160. The Genie found it in 10 minutes for £111. Wow! What a saving!” - Peter Lewis The best news is that the application is totally FREE and only takes moments to install so what are you waiting for? Call Caroline on 07921 715841 and let the Genie work its magic!! (without any polishing either!)

Harmony in a hectic world We are always trying to find ways of improving our lifestyles so we can achieve more balance between the various demands on us, and I managed to find time in my busy schedule this week to luxuriate in a top class re-balancing facial at the Retreat in Slinfold Golf and Country Club, and I am so glad I did! Not only did my skin feel silky soft but I felt totally relaxed and replenished which, after a major house move, was just what I needed! I felt pure delight as I stepped into the spa to be greeted by soft music, oriental decor and gorgeous exotic smells. The sensory
experience continued when I was asked to smell samples of the range of E’spa products which are produced from totally natural oils such as Rose Nerolid and Patchouli. The philosophy underpinning the products is that we are naturally drawn to scents which harmonise and balance our body. I was attracted to Patouchi (must have a hippy inside me somewhere!) and this oil was then used for my facial massage which was preceded by a thorough cleanse and exfoliation. The massage centred on pressure points in the face and then I was given a relaxing but firm lymph dainage massage of the shoulders and neck.
Following that, was a soothing mask which did not tighten but felt invigorating. The most relaxing part was the scalp massage which was totally blissful despite the fact that I left looking like Worzel Gummidge on a bad day! However, the spa facilities enabled me to have a good hair wash and shower afterwards, which was a real bonus ! I totally recommend this experience to all of you as it makes you feel wonderful and also works to brighten and enhance your skin in these grey days. Many thanks to Emily for her calm and pleasant manner. When can I come again?
Get fit! Get active! If you want to have fun while you exercise and make friends, then head down to Sue Caile’s classes! Sue believes that exercise should be a social activity and that it can help people keep fit whilst improving their social life. She says “ Don’t
worry about matching leg warmers and headbands- a big t shirt is ideal - just come along and have some laughs whilst keeping fit !” She has been known to organise coach trips for her members and regular social get togethers are a feature of her classes. On
her Friday class, you can have a chat over a cup of coffee too. Sue runs her classes from the Millennium Hall on Crawley Road and there are Shape up,Turn Up and Tone Up classes on Mondays and on Fridays she runs 50+ classes. Contact Sue on 01403 730783

The season Holly Home of yourfor dreams With land at such a premium and designs reflecting the need to maximise every inch of space, it is increasingly hard to find a bespoke luxury brand new family home. Especially one that has been traditionally constructed to a spacious and flexible two storey design, set on a wide private plot in a select yet convenient location. With this in mind, Churchlands Homes are pleased to announce that Holly House, The Oaks, off Forest Road, is now ready to be offered for sale. Churchlands, a local company specialising in bespoke projects, have been building in the Horsham area for some 12 years, and their policy is only to offer each of their select brand new homes for sale when they are nearly complete. To make the move as easy as possible, Holly house is fitted with ceramic floor tiles and new quality carpets, and the gardens are professionally landscaped to the front and rear with turfed lawns and shrubs. Every effort is made to present an established environment yet with all the benefits of new build. Holly House is likely to tick all the right boxes if you’re looking

What are the winter rules for vacant properties
Away for a Weekend If you are only going to be away from the house for a couple of days, you can either leave the heating on its normal settings or be prepared to pay the fuel bills or, if you want to save money, do the following: - Set the heating programmer to 24-hour (‘continuous’) operation - Set the room thermostat to a low setting - say 5°C/41°F - Remove or prop loft hatch fully open. This will allow the boiler to fire to keep the house (and the loft space) above freezing point. Away for Longer If you leave the house for more than a few days, and want to turn the heating off, you need to drain the hot and cold water systems of all water. If the heating system (which is separate from the hot and cold water systems) has anti-freeze in it, you do not need to drain it. - Drain down the cold water system entirely - close the main stop valve, open all cold taps, and flush all WCs. - Drain down the hot water cylinder fully using a length of hosepipe attached to the drain valve at the base of the hot water cylinder (which needs a small spanner to open); put this into a basin or bath, and open all hot taps. - When you return, check that all drain valves are closed before opening the mains stopvalve. - Close taps as water flows from them - the kitchen cold tap first, then all other cold taps, and then all hot taps.
General Precautions Whether you are planning to be away or not, it’s sensible to take general precautions against freezing in case you are away during a cold snap and haven’t been able to prepare for it first. There are two general ways to prevent freezing: 1. Fit a frost thermostat that brings the boiler on whenever the air temperature drops below a certain level - much lower than the level required to bring the heating on when the house is occupied. This is certainly something you should do if the boiler is situated in the garage or an outhouse that could get seriously cold even if the rest of the house is above freezing. 2. Add anti-freeze chemical to the feed and expansion cistern so that it circulates around the central heating system. This chemical is made by specialist firms - and is not the same as the antifreeze used in cars. Adding antifreeze to your central heating system or fitting a frost thermostat are useful general precautions against freezing pipes, but you should still take the specific precautions described above if you go away in the winter to prevent the house water pipes freezing. Q
I have a rental property which is currently vacant as it is between tenancies. I am concerned about the possibility of squatters taking up residence and wondered if you could advise on the likelihood of this.
A
As we all know, a squatter is a person occupying a property without permission from the owner or other person who is entitles to possession. There is no such thing as “squatters rights” but under the Protection From Eviction Act, it is unlawful to try to evict a squatter from a property without following the due processes of the law. There is a fast track procedure for possession, it can take between 14 – 28 days, but having your property occupied by squatters is certainly not a position you want to find yourself in so it is worth noting the following; Most squatters pre-view a property before they take up the squat – they need to know it meets their requirements! One method they use of gaining entry is to pose as potential tenants and leave a door or window unlocked so that they can regain entry if the Letting Consultant has not been vigilant enough and sufficiently checked the property is fully secure before leaving. In order to be a squatter, possession has to be obtained without breaking and entering, which is why a window or door has to be open for them to get in – breaking the door or window for entry is “breaking and entering” – a completely different thing. Squatters may trick a Letting Consultant into leaving them in the property i.e to fetch something from the car, or checking something outside – the Letting Consultant steps outside, the squatters slam the door and hey presto – a squat is born! Experienced squatters even have a website – sharing information on empty properties and the easiest way how to gain entry. The Empty Property Register produced by Local Authorities also helps squatters to identify available properties. In summary, it is highly unlikely that your property will become the victim of squatters, as long as your Letting Agent is vigilant when carrying out viewings with prospective tenants. Leaders Lettings Consultants are thoroughly trained in viewing safety and security. Additionally, all prospective tenants are fully registered before being allowed to view any potential properties and this includes obtaining a contact telephone number, email address and home address. Q A
How much should you pay for conveyancing?
In the current financial climate we all need to watch how much we are paying out. However when looking for a solicitor/conveyancer it is always worth investing in a firm who is local to you and easily contactable. A professional who will carry out the process for you in the time frame you want for your move. It is never a good idea to instruct someone just because they are the least expensive as moving is one of the most stressful things that you can do and you need an excellent service from you solicitor to help and guide you through it. It is also not always worth instructing the most expensive solicitor in the town. My advice would always be to instruct someone who sets a reasonable fee for the service they provide. We at Nicola Phillips Solicitors pride ourselves on our service and know that our fees are very competitive and reasonable for the level of service provided. These are tough times and we know that lots of you are looking to move and will want to be thinking about this for either a move prior to Christmas or in the New Year. If you are looking to be in for Christmas and have a buyer, if you are selling and/ or have found somewhere to buy, we can still aim to have you in for Christmas if that is what you desire.
Why not try our excellent service at a great price for a limited period. We are offering clients who instruct us before Christmas Eve this year the chance if they are selling to have their conveyancing on their sale carried out for £349 plus vat (plus minimal disbursements). To qualify for this offer you only need mention this advert and be selling a property. If you are also purchasing you will need to instruct us for your purchase as well and our usual fees will apply. Please telephone for a quote.
Nicola Phillips Solicitors now has a solicitor, Caren Ogwayo for Divorce/ Separation/children matters/ injuctions and immigration matters. Nicola Phillips Solicitors also do Wills/Probate/Advice on Redundancy Packages.

14th Century home
Lines and James are delighted to present this beautifully renovated house dating back to the 14th Century set in Rudgwick. Local shops and amenities in this thriving village are within a few minutes walk and the 12th century church and local pub are within fifty yards. A greater selection of shops, including M&S and Sainsbury's are located 5 miles away in the large bustling village of Cranleigh, just across the Surrey border. It is available on a long term let for £1,795 pcm. The house boasts many features of its time including oak beams and Georgian win-
dows. This is contrasted by the fantastic renovation which gives a modern touch to this property. The downstairs accommodation comprises: Spacious lounge area with steps up to a long dining room, well-presented master bedroom with a large built-in wardrobe and en-suite bathroom, newly fitted kitchen with integrated appliances including separate fridge and freezer, double oven and wine cooler. Leading on from the kitchen is a utility and shower room including washer/dryer. On the first floor there is a good sized double bedroom with stunning westerly views
over the local countryside. Large attic storage, walk-in wardrobe and a spacious wash room with wc can also be found on this floor. Going up to the second floor is another spacious double bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and even more fantastic views, this time in a southerly direction. This beautiful house has a charming, cottage garden with a patio area and driveway parking for 4-5 cars.
Internal viewing is highly recommended as this brand new instruction won’t stay on the market for long, this can be arranged through Sammy on 01403 210088.
An elegant and substantial five bedroom house has just become available through Henry Adams Lettings in Horsham, at a rental of £3,000 per month unfurnished. The country house in Hammerpond Road, Mannings Heath, has character features at every turn according to Richard Town who is letting the property. “This is a wonderful house" said Richard, "with that perfect combination of period features matched with bright and airy accommodation thanks to the high ceilings and plenty of windows - which themselves offer great views over the gardens to the countryside beyond” The kitchen has an oil-fired AGA and Belfast style sink which would provide the perfect backdrop for a country Christmas gathering, as would the sitting room complete with inglenook fireplace. An oak framed staircase and galleried landing lead to the first floor
bedrooms, three of which have fireplaces, which although not operational, offer attractive features to the double rooms while the remaining bedrooms add their own character. Even the bathroom has elegant sanitary-ware and a timber floor in keeping with the age and style of the home. Externally there is a large garage, previously used as a 'home gym', which has general storage in the rafters, and an extensive driveway with ample space for several cars. Bradburys is set in about two acres of land with well stocked formal and informal gardens as well as numerous fruit trees. Mannings Heath is a highly sought after village just outside Horsham and is home to the prestigious Mannings Heath Golf Club.

Goodwood faces rival for historic race crown We know both our readers are big fans of the Goodwood Speed and Revival festivals, so we thought we’d let you know of the provisional 2011 dates at the earliest opportunity. We’d also thought we’d let you in on a bit of news about a new event, which is clearly aiming to mimic some of the success of the West Sussex motor racing events. Donington Park has confirmed the launch of its own annual Historic Festival – a new venture which it says “aims to rival the very best UK and international historic motorsport events”. The inaugural Festival will be held on the weekend of 30th April to 1st-2nd May 2011, but we’ll wait for a line-up before we mention it in the same sentence. As Goodwood. The 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed is provisionally scheduled to take place over the weekend of 1st-3rd July, the same weekend that the world’s largest celebration of motoring culture has been held over the last two years. The 2011 Festival promises to be packed with action and excitement as the planet’s most glamorous racing machinery and
Donington will host an Historic Festival in 2011
famous drivers gather together in the beautiful surroundings of Goodwood Park. The 2011 theme for this leading motor sport event is currently being finalised and will be announced in the coming weeks. The day before the 2011 Festival of Speed gets underway, on Thursday 30th June Goodwood’s second Moving Motor Show will provisionally be held, giving new car buyers and motoring enthusiasts the opportunity to see the very latest models up close, and in many cases drive them on a
dedicated vehicle evaluation route within the grounds of the Goodwood Estate, which includes the famous Festival hillclimb. The Goodwood Revival is provisionally scheduled for the weekend of 16th-18th September next year. The Revival is truly a magical step back in time and celebrates the halcyon days of motor racing as it used to be with all of the accompanying spectacle and glamour of the era. Competitors and spectators alike dress in period
fashions with the finest sights and entertainment of the pre1966 era for all to enjoy. All of the 2011 Goodwood motor sport events promise a spectacular array of cars and motorcycles, plus star drivers, riders and plenty of other fabulous attractions to thrill the crowds. Goodwood will provide all the latest news and updates on these ‘must attend’ sporting and social events in the coming weeks and months, when the finalised dates will also be confirmed. As in previous years, admission to both Goodwood motor sport events will be strictly by advance ticket only, with 2011 ticket sales now available. New for 2011, young adults aged between 13 and 18 can now purchase Festival of Speed and/or Revival tickets for half the full adult price. The James Bond DB5 that featured in both Goldfinger (1964) and Thunderball (1965) sold last week for just under £3 million. The DB5 with the revolving registration plate ‘FMP 7B’ was sold for £2,912,000 ($4,608,500) at RM Auctions to an American bidder who plans to display it at his private collection in Ohio. Held in private ownership for some 40 years, ‘the most famous car in the world’ was one of two DB5s which appeared on screen in both films.

Dynamic duo win gold again
Horsham Under 13s celebrate their narrow win on Sunday
Horsham sweep aside well-drilled Cranleigh Horsham R.U.F.C U13’s beat a well organised Cranleigh side 24-14 on Sunday morning in wet and windswept conditions at Horsham Rugby Club. The home team were looking to bounce back from last week’s friendly defeat to Bracknell, and this determination showed as they were dominant in the first third, scoring three tries and two conversions to give them a 19-0 lead over the slow starting Cranleigh. Their speed and attacking strength were too much for Cranleigh early on but as they neared the break their defence began to cope better as they set a high defensive line. From the start of the second third, Cranleigh then gained attacking confidence and pressed to
reduce the deficit. Two quick tries brought them within 5 points behind the home side, whose nerves were noticeably hit. Cranleigh continued to press going into the final third, with their powerful props driving forward the scrums as they continued up the pitch, looking to draw level. But an unlucky knock on caused a change of possession and Horsham showed their attacking strength as they made up the lost ground. Play was stopped temporarily as a clash of heads lead to blood injuries on both sides, but after the brave youngsters left the field to a rapturous applause Horsham
continued their attack, pinning Cranleigh all the way back to their try line. But for a good fifteen minutes this is where Cranleigh held them back, despite many attempts the home side couldn’t get across the line as the Cranleigh back line continuously saved their team, kicking to safety
regularly. However Horsham kept coming back and the defence was eventually broken as the strong Todd raced down the line and despite many attempts to take him out of play he made it to the try line. This was met with a huge cheer from the shivering crowd and it gave Horsham a more comfortable 10 point lead, which they kept until the final whistle. Horsham manager Craig Boswell praised his teams attacking threat and awarded the impressive Todd with a deserved man of the match award. Words: Jamie Tullett Pictures: Victoria Thomspon
Sean Richardson, featured on these pages earlier in October for winning the boys doubles at a Badminton England Silver tournament, has already gone one better by combining with David King to repeat the feat. This time theytriumphed at the higher standard of a Badminton England Gold U15 tournament held in Tunbridge Wells on the weekend of 23-24th October. David and Sean, both from Horsham Arun's successful badminton performance centre, paired up to take on some of the best junior badminton players from right across the UK in the 2nd Badminton England Gold U15 tournament of the 2010/11 season. The boys made a somewhat shaky start, losing the first game of their first match 21-18 before recovering strongly to clinch a 2-1 victory, courtesy of back to back 21-14, 21-15 triumphs. A convincing 2-0 victory in their next match saw them through to the semi-finals where they encountered the tournament nr 2 seeds. David, an U13 BE National singles’ bronze medallist in 2010, and Sean, an U13 BE National doubles silver medallist in 2010, knew that they would have to be at their best to progress in only their 2nd U15 tournament as a doubles pair but a disciplined and focused performance saw them overcome the 2nd seeds 2-0 by 22-20, 21-19. The final saw them up against a pair from Middlesex and Hampshire, ranked nr 7 and nr 8 respectively in England at U15, and David and Sean’s nervousness was apparent in the early exchanges which included some uncharacteristic errors. The Horsham boys were, however, quicker to settle than their older rivals and held their nerve to clinch the first game of the final by 25-23. David & Sean produced their best form of the tournament to win the 2nd game 21-14 and thus clinch their first gold medal at a BE Gold tournament. In the boys singles, David reached the quarter final of the Gold Star tournament, whilst Sean clinched a bronze medal by reaching the semi-finals of the Gold tournament.

Junior star wins again Horsham Boxing Club’s junior star Danny Kirkland continued his unbeaten run into the new season by stretching his record to 6-0. He had to travel to Plymouth in order to find a bout and won a close majority decision against a home boxer. On the wrong end of another majority points decision was Shane Weston on the same show. Boxing with maturity and composure, he was unlucky to lose a closely fought encounter. In the senior novices held Hove last Thursday, in front of guest of honour Roy Jones Junior, Horsham ABC came away with a win and two losses. Thinking he had a bye into a final to be held the following week, Archie Hutchinson found out with 20 minutes to go that the bout was actually to go ahead that night and went on to win on unanimous points and became Sussex champion. Both Dan Purchase and Ben Pringle had to wait until after midnight to compete in their respective bouts and both lost out on decisions. The Horsham ABC home show is Saturday, 6th November.
The runners set off at the start. You could probably have a reasonable guess as to which of these men won...

Kenyan Edwin Kipyego set a blistering pace to win the Barns Green Half Marathon on Sunday. Hundreds of runners streamed through the village in the 28th running of the Half Marathon. The race’s thirteen mile course goes through Barns Green, Itchingfield, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater making it one of the most scenic races in the country. Giving chase was Neil Boniface
of Horsham Joggers, who came in second, while Anthony Bourne of Horsham Blue Star Harriers came home eighth. Also in the top 25 runners home were Tom Coates and Darrell Stone of Steyning AC and Joggers runner Mark Greet. However, Kipyego’s time of 1:04:28 gave him an incredible six minute victory in the wet.
Rose Nicholson of Woking AC won the Women’s race, with Steyning’s Camilla Neale coming home 16th. Alison Gormley was the first Horsham Jogger home in a time of 1:37:51. Pete O’Connell was the first man home in the Veteran Men (50-54) category, the Horsham
Jogger finishing 36th overall, while club mate Keith Valentine was second in the 55-59 category. Competitors come from all over the country (and indeed some from overseas) to take part as this year 2,000 runners took part. The race is also a very important fundraiser and each year raises hundreds of pounds for different charities, local organisations and youth groups. This

The race contributed over £3,500 direct to charities last year and additionally very many of the runners taking part in the race will be also be raising money for various charities. This year the fundraising efforts of the race have been boosted considerably by the involvement of two joint sponsors of the event, the newly completed Slinfold Golf and Country Club and the Audi Car Dealership at Five Oaks. Their involvement is a huge boost to the event and will certainly add considerably to the event as well as ensuring that there is even more money to distribute to worthy causes. www.barnsgreen-half.org.uk

Peacehaven got one back at the beginning of the second half when Horsham went to sleep from a corner, but it was not long before Horsham got their sixth of the game when Comber got his hattrick in the 45th minute. With Horsham playing the football they can by passing the ball around, George Hole got his name on the score sheet when he fired one in to the top off the net in the 55th minute. Jake Legrange grabbed a quick fire hat-trick in three minutes starting in the 60th minute before Ben Collier made it 11 for Horsham. Peacehaven got a second consolation in the last minute.
l Horsham Under 14s overcame a battling Selsey team to ease into the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup. The deadlock was broken on 12 minutes when a fine turn and shot from Harry Masih was only parried by the Selsey keeper and the on rushing Andrew Roberts slotted home the rebound. Horsham finally doubled their lead eight minutes into the second half when Will Kerr was able to round off a fine move with a left foot drive into the bottom corner of the net. It was quickly followed by a third, a minute later, when another string of passes was well finished by Laim Ruz placing a right foot shot across the diving Selsey goalkeeper. Further chances came and went but a fourth goal was added when a Zack Conniff-Broome corner was only half cleared by the home defence and captain Jordi Walser fired in an unstoppable left foot shot from the right hand edge of the penalty area. A fine team performance was then rounded off when Will Kerr again finished off a flowing move with a right foot cracker from just
Holbrook Allstars women’s basketball team just came out on the wrong side of a closely fought and highly entertaining game at home to the League leaders South Downs Suns. Having lost their previous encounter to the University team by 15 points, Allstars knew it would be a tough match against their visitors but acquitted themselves well in an absorbing game, which ended 32-31. Allstars opened with a half court man to man defence but were undone by the fast breaking Suns and poor defensive boxing out. An excellent 3 pointer from Alex Salichs helped to reduce the arrears to 5 points at the end of the first period and then Allstars really upped their work rate playing tough zone defence restricting Suns to 4 points in the second period reducing the lead to 2 points. A very even second half meant there was seldom more than 1 basket between the teams with player of the match Zoe Hall outstanding at both ends of the court. Ably assisted by forward Jenny Webb, Allstars maintained their work rate making it difficult for Suns to penetrate their zone. As the game entered its’ final stages, the visitors played their trump card as former England International Sadie Mason came off the bench to use her experience in driving through the key for 6 points. Allstars still kept their self belief and buckets from Hall and Webb brought them to within a point of the lead but as the clock ticked down, Allstars fell just short.
outside the box. Man of the Match went to Glen Johnson for an excellent debut at left back.
l Horsham Sparrows Under 15s faced Heron Olympic on a wet Saturday morning, with Sparrows winning 3-2. Heron Olympic took the lead with a fine goal from Connor Messinger, but Sparrows equalised after a cool finish from Zac Chinn. Heron Olympic took the lead once more with a well worked move however Sparrows levelled again through a fine strike from Joe Scallan. Finally, after some muddy conditions, Sparrows sealed the win with some good play from Dan Stutchbury capped with a great finish. l Lower Beeding Lions overcame Cuckfield Cosmos, beating them convincingly 5 – 2 in a half-term friendly. Lions started as they meant to go on, playing forcefully, with striker, Liam Ruz, scoring the first goal of the match. Aaron Pyzer followed with a
showpiece kick which ricocheted off the goal bar and landed firmly in the back of the net. A chance to catch up was lost by Cuckfield with a missed penalty kick and ten minutes before the end of the first half, a torrential downpour made playing conditions very difficult. Adam Ruz and Captain, Andrew Roberts netted a further two goals, with Cuckfield scoring an uncertain first. A further goal from Cuckfield was swiftly followed up by another from Lower Beeding’s Adam Ruz making the final scoreline a mud splattered 5 -2 win! Austen Waite was Lions’ Man of the Match.
l Horsham Sparrows Girls U13's lost out to high-flying Patcham, but gave a committed performance on Sunday. In the first half, Sparrows had three half chances to their one chance but at the break were trailing 1-0. In the second half, Sparrows frustrated Patcham at times with some dogged defending and wonderful counter attacking football, but the final score was 3-0 to Patcham.
Unbeaten at town festival Horsham Rugby Football Club’s Under 9’s team continued their great form with an unbeaten display at the Crawley Festival on Sunday 31st October. With two groups of five teams Horsham under 9’s were unbeaten in their group. Horsham had good wins against Tonbridge Juddians, East Grinstead and hosts Crawley. A 1-1 draw with Hove meant both teams topping the group but the eventual festival Gold Cup winners Hove topped the group on try count-back with Horsham. Horsham had their best performance of the day in the runners-up Silver Cup final. A very closely fought encounter against an organised Heathfield saw Horsham take an early lead. Some awesome tackling kept Horsham in the lead until the dying seconds of the match, Heathfield eventually breaking through Horsham defence to equalise. Both teams unable to be separated, they were declared joint Silver Cup winners. Fintan Ferguson, with some great running and tackling, was awarded Horsham Player of the Festival, but Thomas Edevane needs a special mention for his tackling.

Lowly Trinity hit for 6 The Big Match Report: Nick Hind Pictures: Chris Woolgar Barns Green v Cowfold Res Horsham Trinity 3rds are now winless in 6 after a resounding 6 - 0 thumping at the hands of Capel Reserves. A battling display in the furrows of Horsham Park was not enough as Trinity were given a lesson in finishing from an opponent in red hot form. And to cap off a horror weekend for the Div 5N side, their rivals, Horsham Olympic Reserves, picked up their first win of the season against Newdigate Reserves, to leave Trinity rock bottom of the league. It was just two men, Capel’s destructible duo, Ryan Cox and Jamie Anidjah, who inflicted all the damage on a luckless Trinity, grabbing all 6 goals between them, Cox with 2, Anidjah plundering 4. The spritely pair moved with grace and guile over the sodden turf, leaving all that trailed in their wake. Ryan Cox, sure of foot, terrorised Trinity’s defence with his speed and balance on the slippery surface, while Jamie Anidjah, clear of mind, was always in the right place, producing the perfect finish to each of his 4 goals. After an evenly contested opening it was Cox who
opened up the scoring with a well struck, low drive on 10 minutes. Not to be outdone, Anidjah produced a beautifully flighted chip with the outside of the boot, his technique perfect from 18 yards, as the ball drifted stylishly in to make it 2-0 on 20 minutes. Still just 2-0 at the break; Trinity came out strong in the second half. Max Lee and Mark Swetman looked to make things happen from the midfield, their powerful surges often putting Capel on the back foot. But, the home side’s eagerness to get back into the game exposed a laboured back four, ripe for the counter. Capel soaked up the pressure and then hit with the sucker punch, ripping through Trinity with the classic counter from the back, leaving Jamie Anidjah the easiest of tap ins to make it 3-0 and game over. Ryan Cox grabbed his brace with another good finish, before Anidjah wrapped things up with goals 5 and 6 on what must have been a memorable day for the talented midfielder. ‘It was definitely not a 6 – 0 game’, Capel’s manager, Chris Anderson, admitted after the game. ‘It was fairly even for an
Capel, in red, maintained their lead at the top of Division 5 North with a 6-0 win at Horsham Trinity Thirds hour, but, we had the extra fitness late on and took our chances extremely well.’ A fair assessment as Trinity did create several chances throughout the game. No. 10, Pete Clarke, should have had his name on the score sheet from one of his 4 efforts, and Ryan Tait’s late midfield runs almost broke Capels defence on more than one occasion. With only 6 league goals scored to date, lack of goals is costing Trinity dearly at the moment. It’s a problem that manager, Ryan Tait, is all too aware of, ‘we have been playing some decent football and competing well, but just can’t get that goal when we’re on top.’ But, Trinity’s player manager remains upbeat and knows there’s only one way to stop the rot explaining, ‘we’ve just got to keep working hard to create the chances for each other and the results will come.’ Ryman League, Div 1 South A Gavin Gordon header eight minutes from time earned a jubilant Horsham YMCA their first win in six league games as they beat Eastbourne Town at home on Saturday. Assistant manager, Dean Potter, praised his side’s second half performance, and the efforts of substitute Gordon, as they came from behind to take all three points. YM started the game much the better of the two sides and were a goal up inside the first quarter of an hour. A Joey
Collewijn flick found Fabian Brown inside the visitor’s box, and the striker was able to tee up Antoine Douglas, who made no mistake in tucking the ball away from close range. Ten minutes later Eastbourne equalised through Brett Paton and before the break Mark Fox gave the away team the lead. New signing Spencer Sachies, making his first appearance for the club, came on and he lashed home a ferocious volley for the YM equaliser. With eight minutes left of normal time to play, Gordon rose highest in the box to powerfully head home the winner from a Ben Bowra cross. An anxious last five minutes followed, before the referee finally blew his whistle to hand YM only their third league win of the season.
Division 3 North Holbrook Reserves smashed all club records on Saturday when they beat Forest reserves 27 -1. Holbrook started the brighter of the two teams and should have been five up within five minutes. Shaun Beales, who scored seven in total on the day, missed simple chances early on. Holbrook made the breakthrough though when Beales got on the end of a Ben Brooker cross.
Forest quickly equalised, a mistake by Craig Mitchell, gifted the forest forward the ball and he ran unchallenged into the box and scored. This seemed to kick Holbrook into life and they then started to play great attacking football and by half time it was 12 -1, the pick of the goals being a Pete Cannon bullet header from 12 yards. The second half was much like the first. Holbrook had time and space to pick their passes and the goals came thick and fast. The pick of the second half goals was a delicate lob by Dan Naison from 18 yards out. The goals came from Shaun Beales (7), Dan Naison, Steve Williamson and Jonny Fairall all got four. Ben Brooker (3), Pete Cannon and Neil Wenham got two each and Tommy (Wagner) Di Martino got 1.
l A much improved performance from Southwater Reserves saw them play out an entertaining 0-0 draw with Henfield Res. Southwater missed a host of chances and found the Henfield keeper in inspired form as Toby Lovett, Dan Evershed, James Amankwaa, Harry Carne and Sam Packham all went close and with better finishing Southwater should have sealed all 3 points. It wasn’t all one way traffic with Henfield posing a threat throughout the game but they themselves couldn’t find a
way past Ed Morley-Smith.
Division 4 North Horsham Crusaders continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 5-3 win over Henfield Thirds in Division 4 North on Saturday. Ali Hughes opened the scoring for Crusaders before Henfield levelled and then Chris Atkinson's delightful cross set up James Callaby to restore Crusaders’ lead. But Henfield came back again and equalised when Crusaders’ keeper James Hatton made a fine save only for the ball to fall kindly to a Henfield striker to bring the scores level at half time. Early in the second half Henfield took the lead, before Ryan Taylor levelled and Luke Higham put Crusaders 4-3 up with a delightful lob. Henfield came close to drawing level again, Taylor heading out from under his crossbar, before the same player ensured the win for Crusaders when he let fly from 25 yards with just moments remaining.
Division 5 Central Another poor performance saw Southwater Thirds thrashed again at Fittleworth reserves. Chris Ross grabbed the Southwater consolation in a demoralising 8-1 defeat.

More magic from Marco

Maggs Hayles heroes despite Truro defeat Ten man Horsham were dumped out of this season's FA Trophy competition at high-flying Truro City but will take great heart from a dogged second half display. Truro shot stopper Martin Rice broke Horsham's hearts with two tremendous saves from Ben Andrews, and another from a Gary Charman pile-driver, as the visitors made light of their numerical disadvantage following Mark Knee's 40th minute dismissal. The full-back, making his return to action after a 4 match absence, saw red for a trip on Stewart Yetton on the edge of the penalty area; a decision not contested by manager John Maggs. “Mark apologised to the lads at half-
time but it’s just one of those things. I don't think it was intentional, he's just clipped the boy's heels and over he went. “No complaints from me at all. In fact it was probably close to being a penalty. “But the way we reacted to the setback really impressed me and I told them that if we can play like that every week then we are going to start picking up the points and moving away from the bottom of the table.” Having made the 8 hour journey down to the West Country the game was just three minutes old, and the travelling supporters
barely started with their musical repertoire, when former Premiership star Barry Hayles teed up Andy Watkins to shoot into the side netting from 3 yards. Harding reminded Truro that there were two teams in this tie when his deflected 20 yarder went inches past the post but disaster was to strike the visitors, five minutes from the break, when Kennett’s misdirected header caught Knee the wrong side of Yetton who went down in a heap. The linesman flagged and Knee’s afternoon, and perhaps Horsham’s FA Trophy hopes, was over. The match had begun in inviting sunshine, but in the second half gave way to persistent rainfall but it was the travelling supporters' spirits that were dampened when the home side broke the deadlock in the 55th minute. Kennett's superb challenge denied Hayles, and Zawad-
ski bravely blocked the follow-up from Martin, only for Watkins to mark his 200th appearance for the Tigers by drilling home from inside the box. Paul Kennett’s far post header almost saw Horsham equalise, and Charman’s fierce drive forced another fine save from Rice. Andrews’ amazing goal-line clearance prevented Hayles from getting on the end of a cross from the lively Watkins but it was to prove a brief respite for the Hornets when, from the resulting corner, Pugh rose unchallenged to plant a firm header past Zawadski and it was game over for the gallant visitors. When Mr Whaley blew for the end of the contest with the appreciative Hornets fans standing to applaud their battling heroes from the pitch.

Kings Arms out of reach The A Division leaders Kings Arms extended their lead over second placed BBHVC, following the Arms 5-3 victory over their main rivals. Despite Ron Clarke and Frank Pickett's maximums, the Broadbridge Heath side couldn't dent the Arms unbeaten run, indeed Tony Ayres added a 180 of his own. Newly promoted Black Horse move up to third following their 5-3 win at the Bear Inn, while Roffey Club, with a game in hand over the top three, stay a close fourth after beating the struggling Fountain 6-2. The Shelley Arms are proving to be the top dogs in the B Division, their fourth successive win came at the expense of the Rising Sun 7-1. The Plough ended the Bear Inn B's unbeaten start, when winning 5-3 to move into the top half of the table, while new side Bedford Rascals move into a top three slot after beating the Southwater Club 5-3, with the early leaders Rising Sun B slipping down the table after they could only draw 4-4 with the Norfolk Arms at the Sun. The Mill House inflicted more misery on the bottom side Roffey B, winning 5-3, thus leaving them with four successive defeats.
