News in Brief: l A driver killed in a collision southbound on the A24, Basing Hill, Ashington, at around 9pm on 27th July has been named as Jeremy Beale, 49, of Church Farm Holiday Village, Pagham.

Mr Beale died after the convertible Lexus SC 430 he was driving left the carriageway, coming to rest in a field.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. No passengers were in the vehicle.

www.do30campaign.com l A County Hall watchdog has backed a range of proposed changes to West Sussex County Council Youth Services, which will also achieve savings of £2 million.

The County Council’s Children and Young People’s Services Select Committee endorsed the proposals after a two-hour public meeting on Thursday, 29th July 29 in Chichester. l Join the Horsham Health Walks Scheme, on Saturday, 14th August and help celebrate 10 years of walking in Horsham District.

The walk is arranged so that you can do the whole round (12 miles approx starting at Horsham Rugby Club, Hammerpond Road, at 10am)) or you can join in different sections, the shortest section being 2 miles and the longest 4 ½ miles.

Lunch will be available to purchase at the Holbrook Club and tea and cake at the end at the Rugby Club. The walk will be led by trained volunteer

Station design shows some common sense As redesign plans go, it’s hardly the most revolutionary proposal you’ll have ever seen.

But nonetheless, there appears to be some good, common sense changes proposed as part of an improvement plan at Horsham Station.

Taxi drivers and people dropping off at the station no longer have to make that leap of faith into the current traffic opening, and you won’t be able to park right on the entrance just to get money out of the cash machine!

That’s because the front of the station will be pedestrian friendly, as will the area in general if the plan gets the go-ahead. Currently it’s being consulted on, and you’ve got another three weeks to have a say.

Dad left letter before leap

Inquest hears that Horsham husband cared for his wife for 30 years before tragic deaths

An inquest has heard how a 71-year-old man strangled his wife before taking his own life by jumping from the top level of Swan Walk car park.

John Swinden was found dead in Springfield Road, Horsham, at the base of the Swan Walk multi-storey on April 3rd. His wife Gillian, 70, was later found dead in a bedroom of their home in Treadcroft Drive, Horsham.

Upon finding Gillian’s body, police officers found a note that had been written by John, who had been the sole carer of his wife who had suffered from Multiple Sclerosis for 30 years.

The note read: ‘Dear Nichola, Julie and family, I’m so sorry for what I have done, but could see no other way out.

‘I could not carry on. My brain is going and we were both so miserable. There is money in the Halifax account.

Everything you need to sort out is in the briefcase or in the sideboard.’

At an inquest in Horsham

on Thursday, West Sussex Coroner Penelope Schofield gave a verdict that Gillian Swinden was unlawfully killed, and that John Swinden took his own life.

An autopsy, carried out on April 4th, revealed that Gillian had died due to asphyxia caused by manual strangulation. John Swinden’s cause of death was given as cerebral confusions and transection of thoracic aorta.

A police report by the investigating officer, Detective Constable Steven Webb of Sussex Police’s Major Crime Branch, revealed the full story of the tragic events.

It read: “Police and paramedics were called to the multi story car park in Swan Walk just before 10.30am on Saturday, 3rd April, following reports of a man jumping from the uncovered 4th floor.

“He had fallen approximately 70-80 feet into the car park of the United Reformed Church in the adjacent southern area of Springfield Road.

“Surrey Air Ambulance also attended but the 71-year-old man was declared dead at the scene.

A driving licence was found, along with a note that asked for John’s daughter, Nichola Reed, to be informed of his death. Mr Swinden’s driver’s licence gave an address in East Grinstead, but police were able to quickly establish that Mr Swinden and his wife had recently moved to Treadcroft Drive.

The report continues: “Having arrived at the address (at about midday) there was no response at the door. Concern

“There they found the body of a 70-year-old woman in the bedroom, who was later identified as Gillian Swinden.

There were no signs of a

struggle.”

Paramedic Yeats attended the scene, having earlier been at the United Reformed Church, and spotted that handwriting on a notebook in the house was similar to that used on the note found in Mr Swinden’s pocket. John

Swinden’s letter to his family was then found on top of a dresser.

Although John had expressed some concern about not being able to do his crosswords as well as he once could, there appeared to be little wrong. In fact, they had made plans to visit their daughter’s home in Newdi-

gate for Easter.

One of the main reasons they had moved to Horsham was to be closer to the family.

But just three weeks into their new life in Horsham and with the ‘Sold’ property board still resting in the front garden, John and Gillian Swinden had lost their lives in tragic circumstances.

Strada opens after facelift

Strada has re-opened after an extensive and tasteful facelift.

The Italian restaurant in East Street took the opportunity to close for ten days during the noisy but promising roadworks along the street, which has had a general impact on trade.

But the restaurant is now open again, with a new colour scheme and swing windows at the front of the restaurant, which should complement the new pedestrian-friendly East Street.

Manager Isabella Beausseron said: “The menu is the same for now, it’s just a fresh new look, which is good for the staff and good for the customers. I’m really pleased with what has been done, and it will look fabulous when the work has been finished along the street.”

When Francesco Raciti told The Resident two months ago that his new restaurant would be ready by the end of July, we didn’t laugh.

Not in his face anyway! We waited until we made our way out of the site of his proposed Italian eatery, at the top of Denne Road.

The historic building had charm and character, but it also had a lot of bits falling off it. And without massive investment - something we could not realistically imagine that Francesco’s family operation had in abundance - it was hard to see it opening before mid autumn.

So hats off to you Francesco...

For Carmela, the Italian restaurant named after the mother of former Strada manager Francesco, opened to the public yesterday.

Alongside him in the kitchen at the new Italian will be his brother Alessandro and sister Rossella, making this very much a family enterprise.

Of course, a new Italian is nothing new for Horsham - it’s not even the first time the building has been used as an Italian, as Pizza Piazza was there some years ago, while IndiGo is another to ComeandGo. So what makes Carmela so special? Well, we hope that the relaxed family atmosphere will come to the fore, and that also

the desire for it to be as much a place to enjoy a coffee as anything else adds to the increasingly Cosmopolitan vibe of the Quarter area.

Not that there aren’t a few surprises on the menu too, which is based primarily on Southern Italian and Sicilian cuisine. Some could be sampled at a special opening event held on Thursday.

“We are sourcing as much of our products as we can locally.

That is very important to us, but we are still looking to be cheaper than other restaurants as there is a lot of competition.”

shoe shop is berry nice! it wasn’t so long ago that horsham was known as a town with too many shoe shops.

Those days are gone, along with several stores, including in recent years Barratts in Swan Walk and one of two Clarks stores in West Street.

Adams, which also stocked a small range of children’s shoes at its Swan Walk store, was another victim of the recession.

But on Saturday, Raspberry Laces - an independent specialist children’s shoe company -opened in Piries Place.

The ambitious team have spent months researching the market, and believe that by stocking high quality shoes in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, they can b a success and give established stores Jones and Clarks a run for their money.

There was another new addition to Horsham this week - Just My Sushi opened in Swan walk in Tuesday.

Just My Sushi s a new takeaway concept from the team behind Japanese restaurant Wabi and will offer a fresh selection of sushi, hot bento boxes, salads and ramen noodles.

The enterprise is being over seen

by Wabi’s Head Chef Scott Hallsworth (pictured) who has created a seasonal menu that combines traditional Japanese culinary techniques with quality local ingredients using producers such as East Sussex’s organic Japanese farm Nama Yasai.

Scott says: “With Just My Sushi we wanted to create a really tasty, healthy and authentic product – for people who have only ever tasted supermarket sushi this is the real thing!”

Headlines on both sides of the Pond It’s a bit of a slow news week here in Horsham, although residents are making headlines on the other side of the pond.

Horsham cyclists Nick O'Carroll and Colin Swetman completed their epic American coast to coast ride last week after 47 days and 3340 miles across 14 states, following the historic Route 40.

Starting in Atlantic City on June 11th with NBC News recording their start with their wheels in the Atlantic Ocean, the team of three (John Maguire was the third rider, but was forced to pull out on day four with a medical condition) set off for an adventure of a lifetime.

Nick and Colin finished on 27th July with NBC recording their last mile across The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. It was shown on the news in California, although wonderfully there’s no mention of them not being American! If you want to watch it, you’ll have to sit through some great adverts for Nissans in California, but

The lads have endured the extreme weather conditions across America, crossed The Rockies at 11,500ft high, and dealt with injuries and all the trials and tribulations that a 90 mile a day ride brings you.

They have also entertained their friends, family and followers with a blog as they trekked over the mountains and rode across the Utah Salt Flats and Nevada desert.

The trio have currently raised over £7,000 for their

chosen charity Help 4 Heroes, and even visited the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court before the ride.

The lads intend to hand over the final donation cheque at a welcome home party to be held at The Bedford Pub in Station Road on 22nd August when they both return to the UK. All friends and supporters are welcome to attend.

In the end, it was LLR who walked away as the 2009 Battle of the Bands winners.

But who will win the title this year, as the Horsham District Live Music Alliance (HDLMA) celebrates its tenth anniversary?

Could the Stragglers hit back, or perhaps hip hop syndicate Phrase Mob (pictured left), who impressed the crowd but not the judges last year, could break the rock dominance.

Maybe one of the town’s heavier outfits such as If Heroes Should Fail will win over.

Of course, The Resident will be supporting the event throughout as we did last year. We’d love to see some new bands getting involved - one of the elements of BOTB that most impressed us last year was the support all the acts showed for each other,

Some of these rugby lads seem to enjoy dressing up in pink a little too much.

Questions have got to be asked when some of the town’s best players spend hours dolling themselves up for a tournament, and then have to be dragged away from the bar when it comes to actually playing a match!

But it was all part of the fun at another successful social event at Horsham Rugby Club.

Organiser Tom Wright put together the club's 4th Annual Touch Tournament at the Coolhurst Ground.

There were a few hundred spectators and over 160 players in attendance at this infamous event which attracts rugby teams from around Sussex. This year they included a semi-professional women's team.

This wasn’t taken at the rugby - it’s just a stock photo we have of ordinary life in 1988...

Such was the level of interest in this year’s tournament that many applicants had to be turned away.

Of the 16 teams taking part, many were in fancy dress, but they were all celebrating in one way or another after their tournament exit with a few drinks in the sun, just pleased to again be part of a great day in Horsham's Community calendar.

There was fierce competition all around, but everyone was happy to cheer on the remaining squads once their team had been knocked out.

However, having built a mini city as their team campsite on the day (with homemade bar, lounge, marquee and garden), it was safe to say that they too tired to care when it came to playing rugby and allowed the women's team to walk all over them.

Barns Green impressed, getting to the final, while Monty's Finger won the Plate competition after 2 years away from the tournament.

But the real stars were the Motley 7's, who won the final by 8 tries to 2. Ed Phillips, who was part of the team, is considering return-

Urge to energise Greening groups Horsham communities are being urged to sign up to the Greening Campaign, with support available to help them set up.

There are already six Greening Campaigns, a community-led initiative supported by local councils, in the district.

The first phase sees residents pledge their support to the campaign and to make changes in their household such as switching lights off, not leaving electrical appliances on standby and reducing water usage.

In the second phase, the campaigns move to working on green projects for their local community. Henfield Greening Campaign is one of those that has proved a great success, with a film night showing climate change film ‘The Age of Stupid’ attracting over 250 guests.

County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Econ-

omy Deborah Urquhart said: “Just a few small changes by every household can add up to a sizeable reduction in a community’s carbon dioxide emissions, and saving energy helps save money on household bills as well.

“This is an exciting campaign bringing communities together and leading to innovative ideas and projects. “To date the Greening Campaign across West Sussex has managed to save more than £100,000 from household utility bills, equating to 930,000 litres of water and 807 tonnes of carbon dioxide – a fantastic achievement.”

I’m on the other side of the coin I can empathise with residents featured in the newspaper (July 30th) who are opposed to more housing that will effect beautiful open countryside close to their homes, as I love nature and wide open spaces.

But I am representative of the challenges faced by a resident desperately in need of housing.

I have just been discharged from hospital after spinal surgery and am sleeping on a two seater settee due to lack of space for a suitable mechanical bed.

For two years I have been unable to use the bathing facilities as I require a wet room due to my physical limitations.

I have a report from the OT stating that my resi-

dence is unsuitable along with doctor’s letters supporting my needs.

I have been waiting for suitable housing for a year now. I am sure I am not the only person who is in this challenging situation and wish to highlight this situation so that those residents who are opposing housing become aware of the other side of the coin.

Maybe some sort of meeting in the middle could be a solution.

Big players in the project were also Horsham Folk Club, currently one of the most successful and best attended folk clubs in the nation and the longest continuously running folk club in the country.

Effort, ideas and links to local history were ably provided by Horsham Museum too. All of these things were achieved at a tiny cost to the taxpayer. For all their Arts Council money, people like the English Folk Dance & Song Society at Cecil Sharpe House in London could only largely

Consider Horsham Music Week that ran in 2007 and 2008, featuring predominantly local artists on an expenses only basis. Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show that overall cost to the taxpayer was just £3,000 to gain profile and kudos across the region over the two years. Horsham Music Week had its plugs inexplicably pulled in 2009 by the Council, only to be replaced by events under its direct control, using out-of-town artists at greater expense.

The experience of the Black Cat was therefore seen to be an 'outlier', in my opinion. In spite of highly acclaimed 'out-oftown' artists such as Seth Lakeman; an 'out-of-sight, out-of-mind' venue, plus initial compliance and PR problems, contributed to its downfall.

In dire economic circumstances, Horsham has a choice.

It can play to its arts and heritage strengths, or it can turn them, via lack of encourage-

If there is one thing that Horsham is over saturated with it is clearly restaurants!

Horsham does not need any more eating establishments and even if it did Horsham Town Hall should not be used as such.

Horsham Town Hall was

"gifted" to the people of Horsham in 1888 by the Duke of Norfolk and should be returned to the community without delay.

There are rumours that Bill's Produce has "walked away" from the Town Hall proposal but Horsham District Council are not prepared to confirm or deny this at the moment.

We currently seem to have a flurry of summer events, of which few people are entirely sure what happens at any given one of them as there is so little time between them.

The Italian Festival is the

only one that really gets much pre-publicity (do you not read our Events guide? - Ed) and is the only one that comes close to replacing the Town Carnival.

Can we not keep the Italian Festival and then pump resources into one big summer event with fun and games, music, good food, and of course a proper parade like we used to enjoy so much?

It’s time for a new plan Left: Young campaigners fight new homes in Southwater

In deciding to abandon its Core Strategy, Mid Sussex District Council said that it had “consistently and rigorously disputed the housing figures allocated to it”, that “the unjustified high housing allocation has caused difficulty and conflict across the whole of Mid Sussex”, and that they could now make decisions for their District.

Sounds familiar?

Yes, because HDC in response to growing public opposition has insisted all along that it had no choice but to comply with Government dik-

tat and build the 13,000 new houses allocated to it in the South East Plan and that but for the Plan fewer new houses would need to be built in Horsham District.

However, despite the revocation of the South East Plan, HDC intends to go ahead and build the same or a greater number of houses.

Why? Because a “Study” produced by consultants for HDC, entitled ‘Locally Generated Housing Needs’ concludes that HDC should do so.

The “Study” comprises 93 pages in which various scenarios for population and household -growth projections and economic performance, supported by numerous statisticsbased bar charts and tables, are considered to determine “what level of housing might be needed over the period to 2031”.

For readers who are baffled by statistics or have insufficient time to read, absorb and understand the ‘Study’ and the assumptions, statistics and calculations that seemingly underpin it, there is an 11-page executive summary.

Any one reading the summary alone could be forgiven for believing

Dr Roger Smith, of CPRE Horsham and Crawley Committee, argues that Horsham District Council should follow Mid Sussex in abandoning its Core Strategy,, following the revocation of the South East Plan that the consultants’ concluding recommendations were the result of sound reasoning, underpinned by reliable and conclusive evidence, and therefore indisputable.

They would, however, be mistaken because the ‘evidence’ used in the ‘Study’ to predict future economic growth and consequent housing need is statistics-based and therefore neither indisputable nor conclusive.

As for the assumptions, well an assumption is “the act or an instance of accepting without proof, for the purpose of argument or action”; in this instance the release of around 2,000 acres of our countryside for four or more huge developments, an approximate equivalent to Horsham’s current built area.

In the Study, the crucial statisticsbased assumptions are that the District’s population will increase significantly through inward migration in response to significant economic growth at or above pr-recession levels creating many new jobs resulting in a requirement for 13,000 or more new houses to accommodate a hugely enlarged

workforce.

To support their assumptions about future population growth and inward migration the consultants employ a bar chart (Figure 3: Components of population Change, Horsham District) which shows population growth through ‘natural change’ and ‘net migration’ at midyear intervals1991 to 2008. However, contrary to the interpretation placed on it by the consultants, the trend revealed by their bar chart seems to be a decline in inward migration from a peak of 2,000 people in 1996 to around 700 in 2008, with significant peaks and troughs in between. Notably, throughout the period annual increases due to ‘natural change’ are consistently less than 350 persons.

Clearly, the assumptions and use of statistics in the Study need to be subjected to careful scrutiny. Readers of the Study should be mindful that in the introduction, the consultants’ state that “Housing need and demand is driven by growth in the population and the changing structure and size of households. The Study explores these factors to con-

sider what level of housing might be needed over the period to 2031”.

The key phrase here is “might be needed”; e.g. the consultants are not saying “will be needed”.

The consultants’ conclusions are not statements of the inevitable and the projections therein are subject to a high degree of uncertainty.

Economic growth and employment at or above pre-recession levels is not assured, whilst economic growth does not always increase employment; indeed use of new technology may result in fewer jobs.

CPRE Horsham and Crawley are very concerned that uncritical use of the consultants’ ‘Study’ by HDC will result in inflexible house-building targets being set that are neither appropriate nor sustainable in terms of essential infrastructure and the environment.

It is of more general concern that HDC has not consulted local communities for their views on the level of sustainable development in the District now that it is no longer obliged to work with housing numbers handed down by central Government diktat.

Wisborough Green Balloon Fest 7th - 9th September A three day Hot Air Balloon Festival held on the 7th-9th September in Wisborough Green, in aid of CHASE hospice care for children.

Brian Smith and David Longden organise this event every year and it truly is one of the most dramatic spectacles on the local events calendar.

by flying their balloons and donating the £90 fee for passengers directly to the charity with no expenses or costs deducted. It has proved to be a very popular annual event.

Understanding youth

Those who work with young people are invited to take part in the next course of the Volunteer Youth Work Training Programme.

The successful training programme has been running since the beginning of March and aims to raise awareness and provide a basic understanding of the issues identified in the training programme.

The programme provides those working with young people, both in a paid and voluntary capacity, with useful resources as well as information, advice and guidance.

By the end of the sessions, those attending will be equipped with the basic information and confidence to engage young people in discussions around these issues.

The next course is on Saturday

4th September and covers the topics of education, training and employment. The session will cover an overview of training and education available to young people such as apprenticeships, course information and education levels.

The free to attend course is open to anyone who works with or volunteers with young people aged 10-19 in a range of settings.

The training programme is a partnership initiative between Horsham District Council, Churches Together, Kingdom Faith, West Sussex Council for Voluntary Youth Service, and West Sussex Youth Service.

Two aces at charity golf event Something in the air

The public is being asked to respond to proposals to declare an Air Quality Management Area in the central area of Storrington.

Horsham District Council has a duty to review and assess air quality in the Horsham District on a regular basis and the results of recent detailed tests show that levels of Nitrogen Dioxide are likely to exceed the maximum allowed in central parts of Storrington, including West Street and the High Street.

In Storrington the air pollution

is due to the large number of vehicles using the road, combined with the stop/start nature of driving conditions.

Robber moans haul A US man who robbed a fast food restaurant was so upset with his haul that he twice called the restaurant to complain.

The man robbed a Wendy's burger restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia, at gunpoint, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Police say he later phoned the restaurant twice to complain about the amount of cash

Drugs team boosted by 3 new additions The award-winning Horsham Family and Friends team, which helps the relatives and friends of people who misuse drugs or alcohol, has recruited three more trained volunteers.

The team, which runs a free drop-in service at the Park Barn, North Street, Horsham (opposite The Capital behind New Park house), between 5.30 and 7pm on the first and third Tuesday of each month, now has eight members.

The centre is one of a countywide network run by the West Sussex Drug and Alcohol Action Team’s (DAAT) Family and Friends Network.

One of the new team members, Rochelle Abrahams,

“WE OFFER ADVICE AND GIVE PEOPLE AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE THEIR (DRUGS) EXPERIENCES!”

said: “The drop-in centre offers people a safe place where they can receive information and support in complete confidence.

“We can, for example, help with exploring options open to those affected by someone misusing drink or drugs, offer advice and give people an opportunity to share their experiences.”

Rochelle and her seven colleagues receive ongoing comprehensive and accredited training from the DAAT. They are taught to actively listen to people in a non-judgemental way.

“We believe family and friends can play an important role in helping someone to recover from their addiction,” she said.

cil Cabinet Member for Public Protection, said: “The additional volunteers will be able to build upon the successful service this drop in centre has been offering the community for some years now.

“Living with someone who misuses drugs or alcohol can create a lot of stress, tension and a feeling of isolation. The volunteers show people they

are not alone – that, in fact, there is someone out there who can provide support and assistance.”

According to latest studies it is not just sports fans that ought to be excited about the London 2012 Olympics.

The staging of the event is set to provide a cash windfall for homeowners living or renting property near London.

HomeAway Holiday-Rentals says that those living near the site could make around £2,000 a week by renting out

their home during the event.

Over its 16 days it estimates that the average east London property owner could make £4,500.

Tim Boughton, UK general manager, for HomeAway Holiday- Rentals, said: “The switch from hotels to holiday rental has been steadily increasing, with particularly high spikes in demand around major global sporting events.

“For the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, many visitors sought out holiday rental properties as an alternative to a hotel, which meant the average weekly income generated per property soared by almost 150%.

Lack of first timers following the council of Mortgage Lenders’ report that the percentage of first time buyers entering the property market has reached a three year low, a recent home sale network survey has found a similar decline.

Birthday for iconic Transit Ford's iconic Transit has a significant birthday next month, celebrating 45 years of success.

The Ford Transit, the pioneer of the ubiquitous white van, has led the UK market ever since the year that Jim Clark won the Indianapolis 500 and F1 World Championship, Tom and Jerry and Thunderbirds made their TV debuts, the Sound of Music movie was released and Mary Quant invented the mini skirt.

At launch, the cheapest Transit, a short wheelbase, petrol-engined van with 610kg payload, cost £542. The most expensive Transit was a 15-seat Custom bus which cost £997.

From 78 derivatives in 1965, there are now more than 600 Transit entities, providing a range of dedicated commercial vehicles to ensure there is a model for every job required.

England beat the Germans!

A selection of Lower Beeding Lions U14’s and U15’s merged with friends from Horsham Tigers U14’s at the weekend to form an ‘England’ team to take on ‘Germany,’ which comprised of a group of visiting German summer camp students for a pre-season friendly at Jolesfield common, Partridge Green.

The mighty Lions were too much of a force for the Germans, overpowering them from the offset, eventually winning 8-1.

Played in good spirits by all, the England coaches, referee, spectators and even players, turned a blind eye when in the remaining last five minutes, the German coach, desperate for his team to gain a little more credence, allowed more and more players to play on the pitch without taking any off!

Come the end there were 16 opponents and yet they still were unable to score another goal!

Following the massive success of Horsham Rugby Club's South Africa Day on 24th July, which attracted over 700 guests, the club staged yet another great fun day out on Saturday. The annual touch tournament made for an interesting and amusing spectacle! See pages 11-13 for a report and more pictures.

Trials riders can’t keep up with Jones This month’s Horsham Riders Motorcycle trial made a welcome return to Mannings Heath, this time in dry and dusty conditions.

The results were very close on all routes. The expert white route was won on a tie-break between last month’s winner Luke Thomas and Jamie Jones, with Jamie gaining the victory this time.

Third place went to Mr Honda Clint Legget on 25ml.

The blue route went to a four way tie but the win went to last month’s winner Tom Horsborough on 12ml.

No tie on the yellow route though, with pre 65 Greeves rider Iain Philips winning on 1ml.

The only red route rider finished young Adam Holloway on 46ml.

Horsham need Lindfield slip-up

Horsham v Marine Gardens (Won 120-114) Friday 23rd July 2010 The second leg of the contest for the Centenary Bowl, away to Marine Gardens in Worthing, was a very tight affair.

Horsham had a one shot lead from the first leg at Horsham in June, and were coasting at tea with a 20 shot lead. However, Marine Gardens found their second wind and fought back to within 6 shots at the end.

Top rink of Robbie Calder, Barbara Hill, John Hitch and Bill Monckton (+9) were well supported by Lesley Grogan (+7), Frank Vernon (+3) and Dennis Tribe (+2).

Saturday 24th July President’s Day celebrated the first year that Horsham Bowling Club have had a lady President. Mrs Diana Taylor joined the bowls club in 1976 and has a very distinguished record in the County scene. She is now a top class bowls umpire. Her team beat the Captain’s team by the narrowest of margins, one shot. The Frank Mills Cup, given to the top rink, was won by Lesley Grogan, David Marden, Doug Locke and Simon Felton.

Mixed fortunes The Hornets travelled to Wey Court on Saturday to take on last year’s Division One South play-off finalists, Godalming Town.

Godalming, playing in yellow, were certainly lively in the opening minutes, though never really threatening in the last third, while Horsham themselves looked uncertain up front, the chosen 4-3-3 formation seeming to unsettle the forwards, with Dean Wright being caught offside on numerous occasions and Craig Davies tending to drift over to the left wing.

Though Mark Zawadski was the busiest of the keepers for the opening twenty minutes, he capably dealt with the half-chances that came his way and, as Godalming’s initial charge faded, Horsham began to assert their superiority.

over on 26 minutes after collecting the ball with his back to goal and Branimir Stanoev shot wide six minutes later after being set up by Jack Page and Westcott.

At half-time Horsham changed things around and assumed a 4-42 formation with George Magnus coming on at left-back, the impressive Adam Hutchings moving to centre midfield, Jamal King coming on at centre-half and Andrews moving up front.

The team immediately looked more assured and began to carve out openings. Godalming were reduced to the odd foray forwards, one of which saw Zawadski making a great save to his left to keep out a good downward header from the Town centre-forward.

dinked a delightful ball into the area where Andrews powered a header into the net.

As Horsham continued to press, Jay Lovett saw his header well saved and Westcott shot across the face of the goal before a quick ball saw Andrews clear on goal and the Horsham skipper made no mistake in drilling the ball home.

It was 3-0 on 84 minutes when Godalming's Victor Kiri knocked the ball into his own net attempting to divert Westcott’s

excellent ball across the six yard box away from Horsham’s waiting forwards.

But Horsham fell to their second 3-0 defeat in 8 days when they were comprehensively outgunned at Woodside Road this evening. Sam Tucknott had the best of what few chances there were for the Hornets, who struggled without Dean Wright and Pat Harding. hornetsreview.co.uk

Horsham v Newick (Lost 35-73) Sunday 25th July A much weakened team travelled to Newick and suffered a heavy defeat. Seven of the nine players have only been playing for two years or less, but did their best. Many experienced players were not available for a variety of reasons. Captain for the day, Colin Watson, said that he was proud of the way his team did not give up but battled to the very end.

Horsham v Popes Mead, Border League (Won 8 points to 2) Thursday 29th July A good win away to Popes Mead keeps Horsham in runners-up position in Division One of the Border League. However, with only two matches to play, it will be a tall order to overtake Lindfield and is dependent on other teams beating the current leaders.

Horsham v Norfolk, Littlehampton (Lost 113-125) Friday 30th July One of Horsham’s most popular matches and one which Horsham rarely win, ended in a familiar way, with a home defeat by 12 shots.

A close game throughout, with honours even at tea, went Norfolk’s way at the end. However, Horsham did win two rinks and tied a third, so will be looking for revenge when the return fixture is played on Friday 6th August. Top rink for Horsham went to Malcolm Bridgman, Ken Holloway, Chris Holmes and skip Lesley Grogan (+10) with Mike Power (+9) a close second.

Nervy start but Royals triumph

Royal United Under-14s went into the Faygate tournament (held on 31st Jul/1st Aug) looking to retain the trophy they won last year.

Although Utd lost our first game 1-0, the Royals went on to win the remaining six league games and finished top of the division.

They then played Twin Oaks in the final and convnicely won 3-0.

The whole squad who represented Royals were magnificent and did the club proud with both their football and sportsmanship. The squad was Aaron Chaplin, Luke Polie, Harry Garman, Connor Cushing, Jacob Waller, Stanley Rice, Jake Legrange and Alex Parsons.

The club would like to say a big thank you to the organisers of the Faygate Tournament, who yet again put on a fantastic event for all.

Ladies Golf

Duo amass huge total in Invitation

Carole Bauckman (Mannings Heath), Karen Stafford (Lady Captain) and Laura Marsh (Cottesmore) The annual Ladies Invitation to Ladies at Cottesmore Golf and Country Club saw guests from 18 clubs from all over Sussex and Surrey join the ladies of Cottesmore for a day of golf in a fourball- better-ball format.

Winners were Laura Marsh from Cottesmore and guest Carole Bauckman from Mannings Heath with an outstanding 45 stableford points.

Ann Morgan (Cottesmore) with Barbara Chettle from Copthorne took second place and Margaret Mitchell (Cottesmore) came third with Joan Brennan from Guildford.

The nearest the pins were on the difficult water holes at Cottesmore; across the water on the second hole Betty Linsell from Puttenham won the prize. Meriel Jolley from Mannings Heath achieved the long carry across the lake on the 17th and won the guest prize and Linda Clinton (Cottesmore) won the member’s prize.

Karen Stafford, lady Captain at Cottesmore, said: “We were blessed with a sunny day and despite the very dry weather the course conditions were excellent due to the hard work of the ground staff.”

Super Sams strike against Yankees The two Sams - Easter and Bradley - came good for Athletics as they beat the Yankees in week six of the season.

The PMW Communications Mustang League match was evenly matched with both teams scoring two runs each in the first two innings and Yankees starting pitcher Lucy Wright striking out two and assisting in a further three outs.

With the Yankees in the lead with an impressive five runs scored in the final innings, the A's scored the four runs needed to win 8-7. The A's Sam Bradley had three hits and five runs batted in, and Sam Easter had three hits and three runs scored to power the A's attack.

Starting pitcher Tom Underwood held the Yankees to two runs, striking out five in two in-

nings. Relief A's pitcher Callum Hunt earned his second win of the season, striking out two and making some fine defensive plays.

The Mustang A's won both games of a double header against the Mets to take their record to 6 wins and 1 loss.

Despite an amazing start from the Mets with Archie Darby hitting a Home Run in the first innings, the A's great pitching and timely hitting managed to overpower the Mets for an 11-5 win in the second game.

Underwood allowed two runs and struck out five Mets in two innings on the mound, to record his fourth win of the season. Sam Easter came on in relief and pitched brilliantly, striking out four and allowing only three runs in two innings.

Matthew Oldmeadow slugged a

solo home run and drove in another with a base hit, Easter had three hits and three runs batted in and Joe Riley also drove in a pair with two base hits.

In the Slinfold Country Club Bronco League, the Athletics beat the Mets 6-2. A haul of 12 strikes from Will Anderson and a superb double play kept the Mets run count down.

Callum Oldmeadow also had a great game stealing well on the bases and getting one of the runs.

The Yankees had their first exciting win of the season beating the Red Sox 10-9. With great pitching from Daniel Cannons and Adam Lamport notching a total of 12 strike outs in the game, a home run from Lamport in the third innings and a further 4 runs batted in, the Yankees cheers from the dugout could be heard across the

Ben Vodden fields.

Redsox saw some great pitching from Jared Cox, Eamon Huijgens and Max Dodd each striking out players in each innings. The greatest point in the game for the Red Sox was when Simon Lawrence smashed a pitch from Adam Lamport out of the field for a spectacular home run.

As the Redsox took the bat at the bottom of the 6th one player was injured and could not bat, making one automatic "out", this followed by two quick strike outs

by Yankees Adam Lamport, meant the redsox were unable to gain the two runs necessary to win the game.

Max Rivers followed up a 203 against East Grinstead with a 99 against Horsham It must be a strange feeling scoring 302 runs in two matches, and yet being slightly disappointed!

Yet you could forgive Roffey batsman Max Rivers if he has any regrets from the Sussex Junior Cricket Festival (SJCF), as he followed up a 203 on Thursday with a 99 against Horsham CC. Tom Clark was the bowler who denied Max successive centuries.

The first age group to play their full week of 70 over matches in the festival, now in its 24th year, were the Under 12s.

In the Bowl competition (open to all club sides) a total of 21 teams entered. There were 4 divisions with both Roffey and Horsham CC drawn in Pool B. Roffey began the week with a convincing win against Ansty.

Having bowled the visitors out for 111 (Hugo Cowan 3 for 2 and Max Rivers 3 for 10) Roffey took just 15 overs for the loss of just one wicket to reach their target, Hugo Cowan(48) and max Rivers (51) making the runs.

Meanwhile over at East Grinstead, Horsham were fielding a mix of U11s as well as 12s, but despite a valiant effort by Max

Sanders (30) lost their first game of the festival.

On Tuesday, Horsham had another away fixture at Ansty and batted first. They were all out for 119 (Matthew Hards 31) and Ansty reached their target with 6 wickets to spare, including a good half century from Henry Smethurst (53) Against Lingfield, Roffey scored 207 for 6 declared with the two Hugos scoring the bulk of the runs – Hugo Cowan made 86 and Hugo Vickers 34 not out.

In reply Lingfield collapsed to 70 all out with some fine bowling performances from Lewis Reeves (3 for 10) and Aiden Sparling (2 for 3) The following day, Horsham held Lingfield to a winning draw. Lingfield batted first and posted a total of 259. In reply Horsham scored 166 for 7 but ran out of overs still short of their target. Jack Mallows scored 36 and also took 3 for 44 in the match.

There was also a winning draw for Roffey against Three Bridges. Lewis Reeves (66) Max Rivers (40) and Hugo Cowan (30) contributed to Roffey’s total of 226 for 5.

In reply Three Bridges managed 143 for 7 in their allotted

overs with Reeves taking 2 for 29 and Jordan Bell 3 for 28.

Horsham lost out to Three Bridges on Thursday – Tom Clark top scored with 29 not out but the Horsham side’s total for 125 for 6 in 36 overs was not quite enough and Three Bridges reached their target in 24.4 overs for the loss of two wickets.

Meanwhile Roffey put on a massive 317 for 2 declared in 33 overs at East Grinstead. In a superb batting performance Max Rivers scored a fantastic 203, well supported by Jordan Bell (60). In reply EG reached 159 for 2 which was enough to secure the home side a winning draw.

The two local sides met in the final pool game of the week on Friday and once more Max Rivers put on a fine batting display, narrowly missing out on a century by just one run.

Tom Haynes (73) batted very well before being caught and bowled by Jack Mallows. In reply there were some solid batting performances from Horsham (Tom Clark 35 and Harry Constant 48) but they finished 174 all out in 36 overs. Tom Haynes was the pick of the Roffey bowlers.

With three wins and two winning draws in Pool B Roffey narrowly missed out on progressing to the final, contested between the two teams from the pools with the most points.

In the Shield competition (open to all clubs without county players in their side) a total of 22 teams entered with Horsham Trinity drawn in pool X. Trinity scored 215 for 7 dec (Luke Mc Dougall 44, Fraser Mc Ateer 42) as they beat Crawley (136 all out) on Monday, and followed that with a victory against Keymer and Hassocks (McDougall 61, Joe Gandy 59 not out). Keymer were all out for 55 with Joshua Pennycott (5 for 8) the pick of the bowlers.

Trinity ended 164 for 8 dec (Noah Chinn 32) against Horley, who only hit 49 in reply with Pennycott again impressing.

In their final match on Friday, Trinity dismissed Scaynes Hill for 79. In reply Trinity fired 80 for 6 (Daniel Storer 27).

Having won every match during the week they progressed to the final at Burgess Hill CC on Sunday, 1st August where they unfortunately lost out to a very strong Arundel side.
