Worth it? New chief of cashstrapped council paid more than PM Meet Kieran Stigant, the new Chief Executive of West Sussex County Council. He takes over a council that is looking at making huge savings as County Halls across the country face tough spending reviews. Just a few weeks ago, the council revealed its proposals for £79 million of savings, which include a reduction in subsidies for public transport, cuts to youth services and the special educational needs budget being chopped. Students over the age of 16 would no longer receive support for their
transport to college and some communities may be asked to run their own libraries. So it’s unlikely that those affected by the cuts will be too chuffed to hear that Mr Stigant will be paid £175,000 a year that’s £32,500 more than the Prime Minister! Council Leader Louise Goldsmith has defended the salary, pointing out that three quarters of a million people rely on the council’s services. And the figure is actually considerably less than the salary of Mark Hammond, who recently left the role. But is Kieran Stigant worth £175,000? See Page 3 for full story

£175,000 to run County Council if you ever bump into Kieran Stigant, the new Chief executive of West Sussex County Council, in the pub, make sure he gets the drinks in. Unless you’re a Manchester City footballer, he probably has a bit more cash in his pocket than you he’s on £175,000 a year. In fact, he shouldn’t be in the pub. Demand that he get back to work, no matter what the time is! We do, after all, effectively pay his wages... On Friday, 17th December, Mr Stigant, who has been the Council’s Interim Chief Executive since October following the departure of Mark Hammond, took on the role officially. While it’s good news that the role has been permanently filled, the County Council is unlikely to gain much popularity with the public though, For giving the green light to the eye-popping pay figure. It would seem WSCC missed the public outcry six months ago when it was revealed at least 170 senior servants were paid more than the Prime Minister (who gets by on £142,500). Anyway,
Kieran has worked for the County Council for nearly 20 years in a variety of roles and has been a member of the Chief Executive’s Board for the last 12 years. His current post has been as Executive Director for Communities responsible for a wide range of services including roads and transport, waste management, Fire and Rescue, and libraries. County Council Chairman Mark Dunn, who chaired the appointment panel, said: “The formal recruitment process allowed us the opportunity of testing the market in order to find the very best qualified person to steer this authority through some very testing times and enormous financial pressures. “I am delighted that after a very rigorous process we can recommend Kieran Stigant, and I am confident that he will provide the leadership needed during what is a rapid period of change for local government.” County Council
Leader Louise Goldsmith said: “Finding new and innovative ways of delivering services and working with our communities to really develop the ‘Big Society’ agenda in West Sussex will be another key task for Kieran. “It is a huge job because more than 760,000 residents in West Sussex depend on our services. I have every confidence in him, and am looking forward to working closely with him.
look forward to working with a wide range of partner organisations, and our local communities over the coming years. “I am under no illusions about the scale of the task, but I do believe that strong partnerships are key to ensuring a decent standard of services for the residents we are here to serve.” The County Council will be told tomorrow that the new Chief Executive’s salary will be £175,000.
“Kieran will also be responsible for ensuring the success of the new public health role that the Government is giving local authorities, so he faces a very busy agenda.” Kieran, 45, said: “I am grateful for the confidence that has been shown in me, and
There will be an additional performance bonus as part of the package but this is not automatic and will not be available during the first year of employment.
‘it iS a Huge job beCauSe 760,000 reSideNtS depeNd oN our ServiCeS’
How important can the job be?
We’re sure it’s a very important role being the Chief Executive, but does it deserve a salary three and a half times that of the average air traffic controller (£51,609)?
Mr Stigant will be in charge of the county’s roads. He’ll take seven times as much as the average road construction worker (£24,612) and the drivers gritting our roads through the night when it snows (£24,765)
No doubt he’ll work longer hours than the average worker (well, we hope!) but will it be longer than those worked by restaurant managers? They’re paid, on average, just £19,139! Mind you, they probably get free food...

Recalling club’s Metro adventure A little over a year ago, Adam Hammond published his first book about Horsham Football Club, called 'Farewell to the County 1945-51' which dealt with the
last years Horsham FC spent in the Sussex County League after the war. Adam’s new book has just been published dealing with the seasons spent in the Metropolitan League from 1951-57. Metropolitan Adventure is 484 pages and is available from Horsham FC home games, the Horsham Museum, or The Printed Word, Unit D, Huffwood Trading Estate, Billingshurst RH14 9UR. 01403 782776.

Back in the days before gloves and scarves, daft haircuts, branded boots and £100,000 pay cheques, Horsham took on some of the biggest names in football. It was an era that would yield much success for the local team, when fans could see great players against the likes of Arsenal. Memories of this era are captured in a new book by Adam Hammond (see sidebar) now available to buy. In the 1950s, Horsham Football Club became one of the first clubs in Sussex to try
and progress from county football by joining a widerbased competition. The fact they joined one in which they played against top Football League clubs only served to spark the enthusiasm of the public. The Metropolitan League was an intriguing and exciting competition that captured the imaginations of football fans across the south, until it largely outdid itself by becoming too strong to allow amateur clubs to live their dreams of playing against the biggest names in the land... ham Hotspur, West Ham United, Chelsea ... Haywards Heath! Ultimately the league faded into obscurity and merger along with most others that sprang up in the post-war football boom years. But when the Horsham club joined, the competition was just about to soar in status and a host of teams would fight to become members. This affected Sussex perhaps more than any other county. Worthing had left the County League in 1948 to join the Corinthian League. Horsham left in 1951 and opted for the Metropolitan League. From 1952 to 1957, eight other County League clubs looked to move on from that competition and every one of them wanted to join the Metropolitan League. It had that little bit of magic that made it stand out from the rest. To join the Metropolitan League was to embark upon an adventure. In Adam’s book, there is a report on every game, the thoughts of the players involved and a look at the famous player-coach the club hired to help them find success. The era saw four major trophies, a game against the mighty Arsenal’s first team, the club’s first imported London players, ambitious plans to improve facilities, and an ongoing battle with the local press, dissatisfied supporters and former officials who were unhappy with the direction the club was moving.

‘A Metropolitan Adventure’ recalls the day Arsenal’s first team came to town. Here’s an extract from the book’s insightful match report...
3rd September 1951
Horsham 2-4 Arsenal
An excited crowd of nearly five thousand braved a light drizzle to watch the Arsenal play Horsham in aid of George Cox’s benefit year. Their faith in the magnetic name of the First Division team was amply rewarded as they saw a fine exhibition of top-class football. The Arsenal team included regular first team players in Walley Barnes, Dave Bowen, Don Roper, Reg Lewis, Arthur Milton and Arthur Shaw with the latter taking the place of Alex James, the Arsenalwizard¹ after half-time. The game, in which Horsham played very well, was enlightening for the local side and it was borne home to them how dangerous it was to kick the ball wildly upfield into the fray. Arsenal gave them an object
lesson in mathematical passing and pounced unmercifully on every aimless pass by the home team. The crowd was delighted by the planned patterns of the Arsenal movements, the extremely fast play and the superb ball control. They had plenty of opportunity to enthuse over their idols, for every time Milton, Roper or Lewis had the ball at their feet a potential goal was looming. Wide gaps were left in the Horsham ranks by failure to mark a man, but they were far from disgraced. The forwards in their better spells played well, with Bert Pope and Ron Bliss outstanding. Jack Marriner and Owen Parker were the saviours of their side on many an occasion, being quite unawed by the opposition, and Roy Lindfield, too, had a good day. The game began with a blur of red and white streaking towards the Horsham goal but, in their unpredictable way, Horsham turned the tables immediately. Five thousand pairs of astonished eyes saw Bliss materialise on the Arsenal
goal-line and pass to Pope. Pope made a nervous attempt at a kick, pulled himself together and then tried again, thumping a shot into the goal off the crossbar. Five thousand throats cheered themselves hoarse. After fifteen minutes Milton, Arsenal’s inside-right and probably the fastest man on the field, followed up a kick from Lewis, beat a defender and dribbled past Foster to tap the ball into the goal. Lewis, Milton and Roper formed a lethal combination, streaking relentlessly up the field again and again. The Horsham attack refused to be subdued, however, and two attacks culminated in Pope and John Browning shooting just over the bar. After thirty-five minutes came another controlled, close-passing movement from the Arsenal forwards. Lewis passed to Milton and the Gloucestershire cricketer again tapped the ball gently past Foster. Then the crowd saw an inspiring piece of play from Parker. Amidst great excitement the right-half dribbled
The Horsham players tour the town by bus in 1952 displaying the RUR Cup and Metropolitan League Championship Shield. the ball upfield, passed to Peter Farley, collected the return, and crashed a shot at goal only to see the ball rebound off a defender. Undeterred, Parker collected the loose ball and drove in a hard shot from fifteen yards which flashed into the top corner to the delight of the spectators.
After the interval Shaw took the place of James and the visitors looked as though they meant business, attacking the Horsham goal immediately. Shaw passed to Lewis who deflected the ball to Milton and the latter scored his and his team’s third goal. It was Roper who scored
the final goal for Arsenal, catching a Milton centre and steadying himself before pushing the ball past Foster.

Confused horse out of his depth Lots of us were stuck in December due to the snowfall. But probably nobody suffered more than the Wiltshire man who spent three days trying to find his way home from Gatwick Airport after losing his way in the snow. Even the animals have been struggling with orientation. On Monday, 20th December, a horse stumbled into a pool at a house in Loxwood Road, Bucks Green. The animal had wandered from a nearby field and it is thought he fell into the pool as the plastic covering was disguised by a thick layer of
snow. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Services spent nearly three hours in the morning successfully removing the horse from the pool. They first had to quickly pump out the swimming pool before using specialised animal rescue lines and equipment to haul the horse to safety. The horse, called Ben, was safe and well despite his ordeal and is now back in the hands of his owners.
l Slightly less dramatic was when firefighters were pulled away from turkey sandwiches
on Boxing day to rescue a cat from a tree in Woodlands Way, Southwater. And Bedford Road in Horsham was the scene of two separate but very similar incidents over the festive period. A three year old at a home in Owen Court off Bedford Road had a Christmas morning he won’t forget in a hurry - he managed to get locked in the bathroom and needed to be released by firefighters. And three days later, again on Bedford Road, a two year old boy was locked in his house alone, but was swiftly reunited with his family.

history on the shelf horsham Museum is selling the story of horsham’s high street in an unrepeatable offer. Instead of the usual sale tricks of getting in material especially for the event, all of what is on display is home grown and part of the stock of Horsham Museum. Instead of tempting visitors with just one or two photographs of Horsham’s high street, the museum is offering
over 30, and every one is different. Unlike some stores this January, what you see advertised is the real deal; no flim flam, just the good honest story of how Horsham’s High Street has grown and changed over 800 years. To make the most of the sale, visitors will need time to wander amongst the genuine artefacts, looking in depth at
the eighteenth-century bills written out by the store’s owner in neat copperplate writing: a window onto the past. None of this secondary glazing made from Perspex, mind you, but crystal-clear glass that gives you a real insight into Horsham’s shopping habits. From its earliest origins

back in the medieval period, Horsham has been buying and selling, from the ‘cheeky chappy’ on the market stall through to the multi million pound refit of the late twentieth century, all of this is explored in an extravaganza of salesmanship. Using techniques developed from window dressers, an art form that Horsham excelled at, the displays show off the full range of selling and shopping paraphernalia, from the superb penmanship of ticket writers to seventeenth-cen-

The exhibition Horsham’s High Street doesn’t just rely on objects and photographs, it also tells its story in the words of those who worked or shopped there, from the diaries of an eighteenth-century tailor’s daughter to a London
book buyer visiting the town on a trip to Brighton, to a cobbler who recounted 60 years after the event what shopping was like in Victorian Horsham. Unlike many sales, where the items purchased turn out to be an unwanted bargain, visitors coming to Horsham’s High Street exhibition will walk away with a real and lasting understanding of Horsham’s high street.
How East Street, Carfax and West Street has changed to reflect the changes in retail trade, shopping will never be seen the same again as you have a taste of the history, characters and events that make up Horsham’s High Street.
‘Horsham’s High Street’ opens its doors 10am on 6 January, closing on 23 April 2011.

Bands play for Heroes Last year, the cream of Horsham’s musical talent came together to compile an album for Help for Heroes. Sold at Horsham Music and even HMV, the CD featured some great tracks by the likes of The Collector, Calum Pratt and Dyscarnate. Now those behind the CD at the Horsham District Live Music Alliance (HDLMA) have teamed up with Highgain Promotions, which hosts rock nights for young people at Horsham Youth Club, to stage a concert which could raise 1,000 for the same charity. Up to 200 are expected at the gig, on Saturday, 15th January, at 7pm. Playing will be the excellent Calum Pratt, who provided one of the best tracks on the CD,
and The Collector - a more seasoned collaboration of local musicians who won the 2010 Battle of the Bands Acoustic competition. Drop Out Luke have gathered a healthy fanbase since they came third in the main 2009 Battle of the Bands competition, while Blue Stragglers, third in 2010, are a consistently good live band. Rounding off a great night will be Madeira Drive, who when known as Everafta won last year’s Battle of the Bands. The gig is an all ages event and there will be a fully licensed bar for anyone aged over 18 with ID. Tickets are £5 each and available from HighGain by calling 01403 888 005 or from Horsham Youth Club.

Tired of Easteds excuses Mrs. S Broomfield of nutham lane, Southwater, writes: I was at a loss for words after reading a recent statement given by Southwater Parish Council regarding the future of Easteds Barn. The statement read ‘the council advertised extensively in the hope that more local groups would make use of the facility but very few came forward.’ It was almost beyond belief that they could make such a statement when they confirmed the following at one of their own meetings: ‘‘…the Council has not to date carried out marketing of their halls and facilities in order to bring in much needed income to reduce the impact on the precept.’ (Minutes of Southwater Parish Council Finance and General Purpose Committee held on 4th November 2009); these
minutes have been read and signed as accurate as a true account of the meeting. Local residents have questioned the lack of proactive marketing and advertising of Easteds Barn since the first ‘change of use’ planning application submitted in March 2010. Amongst the points raised are: • There is no brown directional sign on Cedar Drive yet there is one for Southwater Leisure Centre. (Easteds Barn is making a profit – the Leisure Centre is losing money!) • Information on the SPC website has been difficult to find, there are no conditions of hire and it gave incorrect information. At the meeting of the F&GP committee in October it was agreed that bookings would be taken on a 6 month rolling hire basis (a decision also minuted) and the site was not updated with this in-
formation for several weeks, so the site still showed that SPC were only taking bookings until the end of 2010. • When it was suggested that an advert could be placed in the Southwater News the residents were informed that it was too expensive. It costs less than £200.00 a year for 10 editions and is distributed free to nearly 3800 houses in

Capitol chief Michael Gattrell in the spotlight as the Genie in his own production of Aladdin
We are all inclined to have a good moan about our Council Tax bills when they arrive through our letterboxes and have a good grumble about our the way Horsham DC manage our affairs, but I want to give the Council some praise for a change! Having moved back to the area after 35 years away we were delighted to find the marvellous Pavilions Sports Centre with its five swimming areas and excellent gym facilities. However, what I want to express is thanks for our lovely theatre. On 23rd December I attended a performance of Aladdin with my daughter and grandson. How fortunate are the residents of Horsham to have such a talented and energetic Theatre Manager in Michael Gattrell! Whereas most provincial theatres hire in a panto production company to produce their panto at great expense, and leaving themselves little to do other than sell tickets, Michael produces a homegrown one, which must save
us Council Tax payers a fortune! But not just that, Michael writes it, produces it and directs it, so it was no surprise that on the performance we attended The Genie of the Lamp was off sick and who was playing the Genie? The all singing, all dancing redoubtable Michael of course! For a small venue Aladdin was an excellent family show. It rattled along at a fast pace that didn’t allow for small children to become bored. All the cast of 14 could sing, act and dance and the sets and costumes were of the highest standard. A high quality show that for a change didn’t include children from a local dance school but instead relied on five professional dancers who made an excellent chorus. On the way out I overheard a small boy asking his parents if they could come and see Jack and the Beanstalk next year so he was obviously a very satisfied customer! For a theatre of this size, Michael’s year-round programming is varied and interesting, so well done to The Capitol, and Michael Gattrell in particular!

A new class recently started in the barn and children’s parties are now being held there as well – all in a facility that, up until now, many Southwater residents didn’t even know existed! Neither I nor other residents have anything against the Montessori, our issue is solely related to the potential loss to the community of a
cessful, obstacles have been put in their way, the process is difficult and if you are successful you are presented with a 13 page hire document. How can this be considered as extensive marketing? The best advertising Easteds Barn has received recently is the publicity linked to the plan-
valued, profitable building (Southwater Parish Council’s only profitable building!). It is well used today and could be used even more so in future. The loss of the Barn to a private business would be a major loss to this community – not exactly a ‘Big Society’ action!

Fears for Barn Owl The RSPB is receiving a growing number of calls from members of the public who have discovered dead barn owls in recent days. Although owls have been found dead in a range of locations, there has been a significant number found in barns and out-buildings. Experts at the RSPB believe it is because the cold weather is making food almost impossible to find and the birds are dying of starvation within their roosting locations. The wildlife charity is worried that the second expected big freeze can only make this situation worse and is appealing for vigilance where the birds are known to be roosting in the coming weeks. Barn owls feed on small mammals like voles and mice, and with the ground frozen and covered in snow, this food is almost impossible to find. The problem is likely to be
most serious for barn owls born this year, that are less experienced at dealing with difficult conditions. It is thought that these first year birds will account for a high percentage of the mortality. All owl death reports received so far are about barn owls, and the RSPB believes this is likely to be because they commonly live close to man, usually in out-houses, barns and farm buildings, so they are easier to notice. Mark Thomas, RSPB Investigations Officer says: “We

have been receiving a growing number of calls from people who have discovered dead barn owls in recent days and we believe it’s because they are starving in the cold weather as the icy, snowy conditions make their main food sources like voles and mice much harder to find. Although practically there is little that can be done to supplement the diets of Barn Owl, farmers and members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant and report

It’s a little out of our normal ‘patch’, but animal lovers might like to hear that a white-tailed eagle, the UK’s largest bird of prey, has been spotted at RSPB Amberley Wildbrooks. The juvenile bird is the first to have been reported in Sussex for nearly 50 years. It has probably been forced further south-west, due to severe winter weather, from Scandinavia or the Baltic. Warden, said: “When I got a call on Saturday lunchtime from someone who said he was watching a white-tailed eagle at Amberley Wildbrooks, I'll admit I was a little sceptical at first. But fifteen minutes later I was there too, watching this magnificent bird.” White-tailed eagles are mainly found in northern Europe, but through a reintroduction programme there is now a small UK population which is confined to Scotland.

any sick or injured looking owls to a wildlife rescue centre immediately. It’s very distressing for both the birds and the people who discover them, as they are beautiful and charismatic species of the British countryside. Prompt action could save the life of a starving bird and once fed up they should soon be fit for release back in the original location.” Barn owls are most commonly seen at dusk, in open country, along field edges, riverbanks and roadside verges. They nest and roost in buildings found near these habitats, such as farm outbuildings and barns. Despite the UK Barn owl population doing well in recent years, a high mortality event such as this could have serious conservation implications.

Pesky potholes pop up after more snow You may have seen that the roads have started breaking up again... Last year, potholes were big news, and media hysteria (during a quiet time of year) led to councils up and down the land forking out for repairs. Currently, there doesn’t appear to be such a fuss. Perhaps we accept that the council has to tighten its budget like the rest of us, or perhaps we’ve all enjoyed adding a slalom element to our daily trips! But West Sussex County Council is aware that many have sprung up again, and is asking motorists to help keep the roads in the best condition possible by reporting potholes early. “As we experience another severe winter it is unfortunately inevitable that potholes will appear on our roads,” said Lionel Barnard, County Council Deputy Leader with responsibility for Highways and Transport. “During the 2010/2011 financial year we have invested £15 million in permanent road repairs including resurfacing, deep patching and surface dressing. “However we know that de-
spite this we are still bound to see potholes appearing following the snow and freezing conditions.” During the winter weather roads are exposed to a condition known as ‘freeze-thaw’, which damages them in wet and particularly freezing conditions. The water gathers in small cracks in the roads and expands when frozen, causing the surface to break up, which results in potholes appearing. This year the County Council used more than 25,500 tonnes of chippings, 3,000 tonnes of bitumen and 35,000 tonnes of new tarmac to improve the condition of roads in West Sussex. Lionel added: “We hope that the investment made this year will have made the roads more resilient to damage. However, we are asking people to help keep the roads in the best condition possible by reporting problems to us as early as possible.”
You can report potholes by calling 01243 642105 or via the West Sussex County Council website at www.westsussex.gov.uk

Weird news from Planet Earth
Reindeer reflections N o r w a y ' s 200,000 reindeer are being fitted with reflectors to protect them from being run over. So far about 2,000 of the animals have been fitted with reflective yellow collars or antler tags, reports The Telegraph. The aim is to reduce the number
of car crashes that kill around 500 of the animals each year.
Police are Horrified Police in Pittsburgh mistook a 'blood-splattered' horror movie set for a real life murder scene - for eight hours. One officer labelled the room "the most grisly murder scene" he'd witnessed in his 35 years in law enforcement. Firefighters responding to a call at the George Washington hotel happened upon the room.
They saw blood splattered everywhere, bottles of alcohol scattered about and "a piece of a scalp with hair still attached".
Roadkill calendar hit A controversial roadkill calendar f e a t u r i n g squashed squirrels, battered badgers and dead ducks has become a surprise bestseller. High street stores are refusing to stock the calendar but creator Kevin Beresford says he has been inundated with online orders. Mr Beresford, 58, a courier, trav-
elled around the country to take his photos of carcasses, some of which are so squashed they cannot be identified.
A Belgian man renovating a former bank found £255,000 in cash that had been left behind in a vault. Ferhat Kaya, 33, had paid £153,000 for the property, a former branch of the Dexia bank in Ghent, as a base for his accounting firm. Before accepting the keys, he
turned down the estate agent's quote of £3,000 to remove an old safe, reports the Telegraph.
One of the nation's best loved television animals, the Andrex puppy, is being replaced with a digital version after almost 40 years. The Labrador retriever, which has been a fixture on screens since 1972, is being revamped in a new £15m advertising campaign. Andrew manufacturer Kimberly
Clark has confirmed the new ads will star a computer generated image instead of using a real-life puppy.

‘Martello Monster’ more than a myth? The counties of Kent, and particularly Sussex, have many folkloric legends of great dragon-like monsters said to inhabit the ancient woodlands and forests. Sceptics often discount such beasts as superstition and instead blame possible encounters with adders or escaped reptiles. However, the following accounts suggest that something far bigger than your average snake once lurked in the foamy waters off the coast-line of Kent and Sussex. From Bygone Kent magazine, Vol 6, No. 9, 1985, featured in an article named ‘Submarines, A Ghost And A Sea Monster’ by W.H. Lapthorne: ‘Each year during the silly season the media revel in fresh sightings of Nessie, the legendary Loch Ness Monster. ‘Yet the sea monster encountered off the North Foreland in 1917 was far from legendary and more than just a product of a “wee dram”. ‘In July 1917 the ‘Paramount’, an armed drifter from Ramsgate attached to the famed Dover Patrol, was cruising a mile from the Long Nose Spit, between the North

Foreland and Margate. ‘Suddenly the sharp eyes of the look-out sighted a large snake-like creature rearing out of the sea ahead of them “hard on the port bow”, a creature which the startled man later described as being “like some gigantic conger eel about fifty-feet in length, with a long scaly body, a large spiny dorsal fin and dark olive green in colour”. ‘At the approach of the oncoming vessel the creature inquisitively raised its head, as the craft steamed past at a steady eight knots. ‘At a distance of 300 yards the skipper gave the order to open fire on the curious but seemingly inoffensive beast. ‘Six shells were fired, the last of which struck the creature in the dorsal fin. After thrashing violently on the surface for a few seconds it
sank from sight in a welter of blood. ‘Years later in 1957 a sequel to this narrative came some miles down Channel at Seaford in Sussex, when local fish-
ermen reported having their nets ripped to pieces by a strange sea serpent some fifty-feet in length, with a long scaly body bearing traces of a deep seven-foot scar.
‘The same thing happened again in 1968, when the incident was reported in a national daily and described as the Martello Monster, as it took place off Martello Tower No. 74 at Seaford, but this time the assailant remained unseen below the surface.’

Spinetti stars in Deathly comedy Ian Dickens Productions Ltd. are proud to present the wonderfully funny comedy, Murdered to Death, at the Capitol on 13th15th January. The play, by Peter Gordon, stars the legendary Victor Spinetti, Sandra Dickinson from the cult classic Hitchikers’ Guide to the Galaxy, Michelle Hardwick (Lizzie Kennoway in The Royal) and Chloe Newsome (Vicky Arden/MacDonald in Coronation Street for five years). Murdered to Death is a hilarious comedy thriller in the Agatha Christie genre, this whodunnit twists and turns with side-splitting antics and ever-increasing merriment and confusion. Set in a country manor house in the glorious 1930’s, the colourful cast of characters guaranteed to delight include Bunting the Butler, Charles Craddock with the prerequisite stiff upper lip, the bumbling local inspector and his Constable and a well meaning local sleuth Miss Maple who seems to attract
murder wherever she goes. Add to this a high society debutante, a shady French art dealer and his moll, and supporting cast, and you have the perfect recipe for uproarious fun and hysterical happenings. But following the mysterious death of the house’s owner, will the murderer be unmasked before every one else has met their doom, or will the audience die laughing first? Hertfordshire Life described it as ‘Hilarious, one of the most enjoyable shows I have seen in a long time.’ This sublime comedy from Ian Dickens Productions Ltd. follows the great success of the recent critically acclaimed productions of Noël’s Coward’s ‘Star Quality’ and J.B. Priestley’s ‘Dangerous Corner’.

Happy New Year! It has been a very busy and bustling Christmas season at The Capitol, with not only one but two shows running alongside each other. Our pantomime Aladdin in the theatre and Dear Santa in the studio have both been met with great praise and it has been a pleasure to see so many excited children (and grown-ups!) coming into the venue over the past few weeks. It’s always sad to have to say goodbye to our Christmas casts as they become part of ‘our family’ during their time at the venue, but in turn we look forward to a new season of shows and films to entertain. The spring theatre programme starts next week with the return of Ian Dickens Productions with Murdered to Death and at the end of January we welcome back The Birmingham Stage Company who present Horri-
ble Histories Live on Stage. The film schedule over the coming weeks includes 127 Hours, directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire), the true story of a mountain climber who becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneering alone near Moab, Utah. Russell Crowe stars in The Next Three Days in which a married couple's life is turned upside down when the wife is accused of a murder, Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter star in The King’s Speech and Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp star in The Tourist. Finally for those eager early bookers out there this year’s pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk is already on sale ‘Oh yes it is!’ so get your tickets booked now!

Something old, something new Something borrowed, something blue so the old saying goes; this is traditionally the advice given to brides on the eve of their weddings but it also seems very apt for this time of year too. The old year has vanished and the New Year beckons us with grey skies, cold days and the old British habit of moaning seems to be rife; everywhere we are told by pundits about the huge deficit (something borrowed does not seem to be a good thing!) and having just celebrated the New Year, we are urged to rid ourselves of the old as quickly as possible whether it be a stone of weight or the unhealthy habit of ....... (fill in the blank ... smoking, drinking, spending, eating chocolate etc). Well, I am advocating positive thinking as the “cure all” for a fabulous 2011, and what a better way to cheer yourself up than turning your mind to joyous family celebrations and romance? With the Royal Family leading the way with the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton (sorry Katherine!) we feature the Mannings Heath Wedding Fair. This event showcases all that is glorious in gowns and I am sorely tempted to pop down and re-enact the famous scene from the hit series “Friends” where Monica and Rachel parade around in gorgeous wedding dresses just for the fun of it! Oops I have probably blown my cover now! Another positive tip is to use your imagination and plan an amazing holiday and then try to recreate aspects of it in your everyday life. Now, I love Rome but popping down to Sainsbury’s for a pizza is not enough to create the magic but maybe listening to Italian Opera whilst eating a delicious Italian dish accompanied by a small (!!) glass of Frascati could do the trick? Of course, we are talking about a calorie counted meal and alcohol free wine, you understand! Writing this column does pose problems when one
is tempted to indulge and I am reminded of my preChristmas rescue mission for the boys in the office to a local takeaway; I had a hacking cough at the time, and whilst ordering cheeseburgers and chips, I was asked what feature I did in the paper and spluttered out between coughs “Health and Lifestyle!” to a very unimpressed assistant! I am a serious candidate for detoxification at the moment, as we all are after the excesses of the Christmas season. Even yogurt TV advertisers are advising us to get rid of the old and bring in the new. So, with the idea of creating the experiences of a holiday
with all the health benefits of detoxification, I could do no better than treat myself to a wonderful Hammam treatment at The Beauty Cocktail Spa. This exclusive pampering and relaxation ritual has ancient origins and it is undertaken in an authentic Hammam with the benefit of total exclusivity if so desired. The whole experience is the perfect antidote to the January blues so find out more in my article over the page. I love the name of the women only gym “Curves” as it fully celebrates femininity whilst offering an easy and stress free way to tone and lose weight for “time poor“
busy women! The gym is offering free trials at the moment so make a decision to pop down there soon. That neatly leads me to the subject of New Year’s Resolutions and if nothing else, please spread the positivity around and do not join the league of grumblers, as in the larger scale of the world, we are all very fortunate! Now where is that CD of Rossini’s “Barber of Seville”? Enjoy! Happy New Year!

Cleopatra’s secret revealed! ‘It’s important to find the time to pamper yourself’
I always remember the wonderful Hammam ritual I experienced in Marrakech, Morocco and I was amazed to find out that this wonderful relaxing treatment was available in Horsham at The Beauty Cocktail Spa. The Hammam has its roots in Ancient Eygpt and was beloved by Cleopatra and was considered to be the ultimate exclusive luxury. The whole experience leaves you with a truly deep sense of peace and your skin and mind feel reborn . In fact, the whole process immerses you in a glorious feeling of being renewed on many levels. I strongly recommend it as a winter pick me up.
The beauty of this treatment is that you can enjoy the benefits without having to pay for a whole spa experience; you can indulge on your own or with up to two friends in a private calming environment during the week. Opportunities are available for week day appointments at the spa with the treatment lasting an hour and a half but you can also make full use of the heated pool and spa facilities for a longer time too. Another popular option is to come after work and enjoy a few hours; a great way to celebrate Friday and shake off all the stresses of the week! The basis of the Hammam ritual revolves around the Hamman bed which is
heated gently from below and provides deep muscle relaxation whilst the body is prepared for the application of the famous black soap which despite its strange name and colour, is one of the most efficient exfoliating treatments available in the world and I can honestly say it leaves your skin feeling like that of a baby! The feeling of being like a baby continues as you are soaped and it is this ‘letting go’ which is the key to success of this process. The body is then encased in a wrap infused with gorgeous scented oils and you are be pampered further with a facial and scalp massage! After the wrap is removed, your skin smells so delicious
that you never want to wash it away! Clients are able to choose the pace and times of their treatments and there is always a therapist dedicated to your well being and enjoyment. Natalia, who runs the spa is extremely attentive and she is totally committed to helping all her clients relax and enjoy their stay. Refreshments include detoxing teas which are superior quality and the products used during the ritual are based on honey, ginger and rose and are used in top class Parisian spas. Contact Natalia at Beauty Cocktail Sap to take advantage of this unique experience for a very reasonable cost.

Unique workout at Curves promises speedy results! we
There is a tardis in Gladstone Road which can transform your life and make you stronger and fitter in the minimum of time! It is called “Curves” and although it looks small on the outside, it opens into a large well equipped space with the latest hydraulic resistance machines which deliver a complete aerobic and strength training workout within 30 minutes. The friendly atmosphere is the first thing you notice about this gym; it is relaxed and there is no pressure to look like the next entrant for the Olympics in skin tight lycra! However, do not be fooled, this is a place where challenges are made and achieved! Whatever your age or fitness level, the team at Curves will help you fulfill
your goals and then some more! The gym offers a fun and non intimidating 30 minute workout for busy women who want to achieve the best results in the shortest time possible. How is this possible? Well the impressive range of hydraulic resistance machines intensify the action of the workout through a graded system so that if you work faster the resistance is increased but there is still room for more gentle exercise for the less fit amongst us. The age range of the members runs from 16 years to 80 years and everyone is made to feel welcome and valued. I was impresssed by the birthday messages on the wall and Gina and her staff are committed to helping everyone feel amazing and their target setting is an
integral part of their success. They have launched their nutrition programme to complement the exercise
programme which is ideal for this time of year! You can book a free tour and fitness assessment at
“Curves” during January and my advice is to head down there as soon as possible to experience the futuristic
machines combined with traditional customer service.

Leaders let appealing town centre properties
The Paddocks gallop on Berkeley’s Village Collection development, The Paddocks in Horsham, has been one of this year’s success stories and there are now only five properties remaining for sale here and two of them are show homes. Berkeley’s show homes are prized by buyers who value the cachet of living in a home with finishing touches of a professional interior design. Ben Annetts, Berkeley sales manager, explains, “The show homes at the Paddocks are stunning as the curtains are hung, light fittings in place, the walls are painted or papered and the luxury kitchens and bathrooms are ready for a buyer to move in, unpack and enjoy their perfectly decorated home. “Also, the prestige of Berkeley show homes often attracts a premium price when they are re-sold on the residential market because the professional design can add considerable value.” The setting of The Paddocks is idyllic as they are in a quiet backwater of the town set against a backdrop of mature trees. All the properties here have been built with locally sourced materials and all the interiors of these properties are stylish, elegant and each home offers the very best living and entertaining spaces for the buyers. Sarah Turpin of appointed agents, Connells, says, “All the properties here have Berkeley’s

signature luxury interiors and the two show homes are exquisitely decorated and finished; but the Berkeley show homes are second to none as the company uses the best designers and décor that really has the ‘Wow!’ factor. “These properties are unique to Horsham.” The properties at The Paddocks
have spacious contemporary living and family rooms, under floor heating and fabulous kitchens with leading brand name appliances. There are also luxurious bathrooms and en suite facilities, beautiful landscaped gardens and a feeling of space and light that pervades these elegant homes and
First time buyers will soon find the process of purchasing a home easier than it has been over the past few years. First-time buyers may find it easier to get on the property ladder, if the comments of one expert are anything to go by. Martin Ellis, housing economist at Halifax, said mortgage affordability has "significantly improved" over the last three years. He explained in the "noughties" it was difficult for people who were looking to purchase their first abode and the rise in house prices prevented many from buying a dwelling.
the surroundings. The Paddocks offers a select range of detached and semi detached houses priced from £365,000. To find out more, please call 01403 251862 or see www.berkeleygroup.co.uk
l One expert has claimed the new homes market will do well next year. The new homes market is set to experience a positive year, it has been observed. Managing director of newhomesforsale.co.uk Vernon Pethard said a number of fresh developments are in the pipeline. He suggested the only thing hampering the sector will be the fact mortgage firms are still adhering to strict lending criteria.

Clive Hancocks Director Mortgage Solutions
Kathy Taylor Senior Manager Leaders
“Research conducted by the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries (AMI) has concluded that there are a number of benefits to consumers who visit a consultancy or broker as their chosen place to find a mortgage as opposed to a high street lender”, says Clive Hancocks, Director of Mortgage Solutions Limited in Horsham. “When looking for a mortgage, customers have no shortage of information available in the market place both within newspapers and the internet, but they still need to wade through this to determine what suits their needs. This is where an independent consultant can really help as they have access to the entire mortgage market and are best placed to scrutinise the choice available on the customer’s behalf to make a recommendation. The majority of brokers provide “advice and recommendation” which differs from many high street lenders who provide information only. What this means for the customer is that a broker will determine what is the right solution for an individual’s needs and provide a written recommendation detailing how and why the product is right for the client. An information only proposition offered by many high street lenders will provide the customer with a product, or several products, and leave them to determine the right solution. Choosing the wrong product could at best be costly. A saving of just 1% on your current interest rate would mean you pay £30,000 less over a 25 year term based on an interest-only mortgage of £125,000, so the cost of a mistake is significant. Many customers have what are termed by lenders as specialist or non-conforming requirements. This may be as a result of the type of employment they are engaged in or as a consequence of previous financial difficulties. Many high street lenders do not provide products within this sector of the market and research shows that the vast majority of these types of mortgages are arranged by mortgage brokers. Despite current market conditions, we still have access to thousands of products including exclusive deals, many of which are not available directly from lenders, and this equips us to meet most clients’ requirements. We provide a clearly defined service and offer convenience in the sense that we will be acting on behalf of the customer. We will scrutinise all of that data on behalf of the client, ascertain needs, make a recommendation as to what is most suitable, arrange the paperwork, submit and manage the application (usually on-line) and liaise with the lender throughout the process and beyond completion on behalf of our clients, to make the process as smooth and stress free as possible.
Unless otherwise agreed Tenants are generally responsible for the council tax payments at their rented home. There are however several loop-holes which Landlord’s should be aware of to safeguard their interests. For example some Landlords may insist on keeping a room within a rented property “locked” in order that they can store their possessions but this has Council Tax implications of not allowing a Tenant full use of the property. In a recent case, a Landlord (not a Leaders Landlord!) stored some of his possessions in the conservatory of his property. Although the Tenant agreed to this at the outset and signed an Agreement to confirm he would be responsible for the Council Tax, he did not pay it and the Council sought payment from the Landlord. The Landlord was horrified and produced the signed Agreement noting the Tenant’s liabilities. However, his indignation soon turned to outrage when the Tenant successfully defended his case by stating that because he did not have full use of the property, (the conservatory containing the Landlord’s stored goods) it was the Landlord and not the Tenant who was liable for the Council Tax payments. It is worth noting then that should a Landlord wish to store items in a habitable room in the property (not the loft space) or the garage, then they are potentially liable for the Council Tax payments, regardless of what is stated in the Tenancy Agreement. Care should also be taken if agreeing a Tenancy for a term of less than six months as this could transfer the liability for the Council Tax payments from the Tenant to the Landlord. Section 6 (5) of the Local Government Finance Act 1992 is probably not a document that you would regularly read (!) but it is important for Landlords to understand what it means. This section defines the term “resident” used in the hierarchy of liability with respect to Council Tax responsibilities. A “resident” is someone over 18 years of age who has his “sole or main residence” in a dwelling. You are a resident if you have a freehold or leasehold interest of six months or more in the dwelling. If you are a Tenant for less than six months and can show that your main residence is somewhere else (anywhere else) in the world then you are not a resident as far as Council Tax is concerned. If there is no “resident” then the hierarchy of liability states that the “owner” or in this case the Landlord is responsible for the Council Tax.

2010 - a testing but overall positive year Chestnut donation For the last few years, Leaders have chosen not to send out Christmas cards to their clients and associates in an effort to reduce their impact on the environment. And over the festive period they opted to send e-greetings instead and to donate the money saved on cards and postage to a number of charitable donations. Leaders chose to divide the £2000 saved between four charities which operate in the key regions that Leaders’ 46 branches are located. The charities nominated by Leaders’ Regional Directors were close to their hearts Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice, Help For Heroes; Inspired Living and The Shooting Star Children’s Hospice. Leaders’ regional director for Sussex, Jane Wilkinson, chose Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice for her region’s donation. Chestnut Tree House is the only children's hospice in Sussex and cares for children and young adults from 0-19 years of age with progressive lifelimiting and life-threatening
illnesses from all over the county. Says Jane: “As a business that has been established in Sussex for more than 27 years, with hundreds of local staff and clients, we are always keen to give something back to our local community. “Chestnut Tree House is close to the hearts of many of our employees and we are delighted to be able to make this donation to help them with their invaluable work.” Commenting on the donation, Chestnut Tree House fundraiser, Sarah Arnold, said: “We are very grateful to Leaders for their support, and are delighted to have been chosen as recipients of their Christmas donation. “As we receive very little government funding, we rely almost entirely on the generosity, help and support of the people of Sussex. Leaders’ donation will certainly be put to good use.”
Leaders Limited are pleased to offer to let a selection of modern three bedroom townhouses in a small exclusive development within easy reach of the town centre and station. The properties, which are all neutrally decorated and come with allocated parking, briefly comprise of; entrance hall, cloakroom, luxury fitted kitchen / breakfast room,
lounge, master bedroom with en-suite shower room, further double bedroom and single bedroom plus a modern family bathroom. Other benefits include enclosed rear gardens, double glazing and gas central heating.

it is interesting to reflect on the events of 2010. The year began in utter turmoil as the snow bought the country to a standstill – many things have happened since but we ended the year in a similar state of disruption! As far as Residential Lettings is concerned it was a very busy year for Guy Leonard & Company. Early on in 2010 we had far more tenants than available property so the competition for each property was fierce. However although this resulted in asking rents being achieved we did not really see an increase in rental val-

‘the eveNts of the Last coupLe of years have Made us a very thrifty NatioN’
ues – I think the events of the last couple of years have made us a very thrifty nation and people are very much more cautious when it comes to spending their money. As the year went on the demand tailed off a little and we now have a healthy status quo – a selection of properties to offer and a steady stream of waiting tenants. In this area if a
property comes onto the letting market at a sensible price and presented to a high standard it will let very well. We had worried that following the recession we would see an increase in the number of people defaulting on their rental payments but I am happy to report that this has not been the case. Although we offer a rent guarantee policy to all our
landlords (subject to terms) we are very fortunate that we live in an area of high employment and do not have to utilise the insurance very often. As a company we have worked hard but played hard too. We were victorious in a recent skittles competition between Guy Leonard & Company and two other local firms of estate agents. We picked one of the rare warm evenings in
the summer for a company barbecue but were not so fortunate with our Christmas party as this has had to be postponed due to the weather conditions. However, something to look forward to in the New Year. All in all a very positive year albeit that we are all a little tired of the snow. Our goals for 2011 are to continue to expand our letting portfolio and to constantly review and improve our level of customer service.

Recently appointed Horsham YMCA manager, John Cumberbatch, was unlucky not to mark his first home game in charge of the club with a win on Monday. His side did everything to score a second goal, but they couldn’t manage to break through the defensive barriers of a well organised, ten-man Worthing. An enthralling encounter saw both sides control the game in parts, with possession continuously flicking from one end to the other. However, despite a much more promising YM performance, there is no doubting a sense of disappointment that the one man advantage wasn’t capitalised upon and a desperately needed three points taken from the fixture. New boss Cumberbatch commented, ‘I think we should have nicked it but I’m obviously biased. “They had some good chances and we had some good chances, but I felt that with the sending off, we should have taken advantage of the extra man. “I think tactically they played it well and so it still ended up pretty even.’ More new faces arrived at the club this week, but most noticeably was the inclusion of John’s son, Marc, in the starting line up for Monday’s game. The experienced centre half, who has spent time at Ryman Premier League club Tonbridge Angels looked like a solid force to be reckoned with in the YM defence, and with Glen Woodburn soon to be declared fit and the signing of Dan Duddley at right back, YM’s defensive worries look as though they may have been solved. Cumberbatch added: ‘There are one or two other players that I will bring in, but on the whole I want to look at what I’ve got and give the lads who are here at the moment a chance because I
think it’s still a good enough squad to do that. I want to make sure I can look at everyone and assess them properly. “I’m not going to base anything on what I have been told about the players or what results were like before. I will base my decisions on what I see of them in training and in the matches.” The Rebels ended the first forty five the stronger of the two sides, but it was YM who took a deserved lead right on the stroke of half time. Daryl Plummer was quick to skip past his full back, before clumsily being brought down just inside the box. In-form front man, Gavin Gordon, cooly stepped up to convert the resulting spot kick and YM entered the break with a one goal lead to build on. The arrival of the second half, however, was what brought the game to life and from the first whistle both sides began to play with a higher tempo. Former YM boss of last season, Chris White, watched on from the Worthing touchline as his side took control of the early exchanges. Then, ten minutes into the second period, The Rebels found their equaliser. Midfielder, Lansdale, this time got the better of ‘keeper Fox, curling a free kick into the corner from just outside the area. The goal opened up the play even further, but it wasn’t long before the visitors were on the back foot once more. A huge leap and flick-on from striker Gordon set free Lott, but with just the ‘keeper to beat, his legs were swiped from beneath him by Worthing’s Tony Timms. The referee had no option but to show the visitor’s skipper a straight red as the last defender, and The Rebels were reduced to ten men. YM continued to press forward in numbers, but Worthing were resilient and held on. They face a tough task away to Burgess Hill on Saturday.
YM (4-4-2): Fox, Duddley, S Bowra, Cumberbatch, Adewumi, Sachies (Ramsay 77), B Bowra, Simpson (c) (Reid 77), Plummer, Gordon, Lott.

Pro’s Order of Merit triumph
horsham denied by late Trinity strike
Above left: Jack Dean on the attack; Top right: Muji Ahmedi makes another save; Main picture: John Kimberley strikes Pictures: Clare Turnbull horsham boys under 16 team represented Sussex at the regional indoor finals on Sunday, 2nd January. The competition was held at Whitgift School in Croydon, with teams from every county in the South looking to earn a place at the national finals. Horsham were unfortunate to draw both last year’s national winners and runners up in their group but with their squad at full strength they were positive about the challenge ahead. In their opening game they were slow to start and somewhat rusty in their indoor skills, eventually going down 4-0 to Havant (Hants). After a short break they faced Bromley and Beckenham and were soon trailing the Kent side. Despite the setback Horsham
equalised and then took the lead through John Kimberley. On the stroke of half time Robbie Denman scored to put Horsham 3-1 ahead. Bromley got one back a minute or so into the second half and the match was end to end as the two teams attacked and counter attacked. Horsham looked the stronger side and went 5-2 up, and although Bromley scored a late goal Horsham were well deserved winners with Jack Dean and John Kimberley scoring two goals each. In their final pool game they played Trinity Midwhitgiftians. In a thrilling and closely fought contest Horsham scored first with a well taken goal from Jamie Whitehouse. Trinity equalised before Jamie
found the back of the net again, only for Trinity to level the score once more.
ners Bromley and Becks. (The regional stage was eventually won by Canterbury who
The score remained at 2-2 until 30 seconds before the final whistle –with Horsham conceding a short corner and Trinity taking their chance, Horsham trailed 3-2 and ran out of time to make up the deficit. With only the top two teams from each group going through to the semi finals, Horsham were disappointed not to make the cut but took consolation from their performance, particularly against last year’s national win-
beat Havant 1-0 in a close final. Both teams will go forward to the national finals on 23rd Jan at Wembley Arena.) Special mention to Horsham keeper Muji Ahmedi who made some super saves throughout the tournament.

Calum Callan, the professional based at Cottesmore Golf and Country Club for the last 18 years, won the 2010 Sussex PGA Order of Merit for the first time recently. Callan’s previous success was winner of the Sussex Assistants’ Championship in 1994, 1997; The Sussex Trainees’ Championship (1994) and the Sussex Professionals’ Championship (1997) but never the Order of Merit. He was often close and regularly in the top ten, but that top spot eluded him. He attributes his recent win to the spur from new team of professionals at Cottesmore who are young and hungry for success. Calum said: “They have a lot more potential than I ever had so trying to keep ahead of them kept me focused on my game. It is good to show the young ones that I can still play but I may need to start practising seriously if I want to stay in front.” The young professionals are certainly showing potential. Dan Croucher won the Sussex Assistants’ Championship and Mike Camille, finished just one shot behind him at the 36hole event at West Hove. Steve Grouwstra, the fourth member of the Cottesmore professional team did not play this year but shows signs of being a strong competitor. Alan Harrison (Royal Eastbourne) and Marcus Groombridge (Burgess Hill) had been leading the way all season but when they missed the cut at the Sussex Open, it opened up the field so Callan's fourth top ten finish of the season earned him the top spot. Callan coaches more than he practises these days and spends a lot of time building his Junior Academy rather than playing. “It’s great that with young professionals joining our team and doing so well it inspires our juniors to strive for success. We are all looking forward to the challenge ahead in 2011.”

Rising Sun win Trebles contest
New year, new winner at slippery trials track
Ron Clarke of the Rising Sun The Trebles competition at the Roffey Sports & Social Club, was the last action of 2010, and attracted an entry field of 80 players, to end the year on an high. On the night, Dan Bradford and Rob Metcalfe both hit 180's for the White Harte and Sussex Barn respectably, while the Anchor's Richard Kinchin notched a 177 (T20, T20, T19) and not to be outdone Tamzin Hindle of the Southwater Club bagged a rare 168 (T18,T18,T20), Peter Bow of the Anchor checked out on a 125 the only notable finish recorded. With the Preliminaries out of the way, the final sixteen trebles fought it out for this season's title, with new champions being crowned as the defending champions Kings Arms failed to send a treble. From the top half of the draw, the White Harte trio of Del Furminger, Dan Grimmett and Gary Newman won through to the final, beating on the way Derek Campbell, Crystal Woodrow and Adam Russell a scratch treble, the Windmill B's Nick Weller, Martin Taylor and Andy Tilley, then in the semi-final Andy MacDonald, Rob Metcalfe and Matt Smallwood from the Sussex Barn. Facing the White Harte in the final were the Rising Sun's Alan Wyatt, Ron Clarke and Greg Upton. The Sun trio won through by seeing off the challenges of Ian Russell, Chris Smith and Andy Jefford of the Railway A, then teammates Ant Casswell, Andy Mason and Jason Trott, before ending the hopes of an all White Harte final, by despatching Dan Bradford, Andy Gurr and Gary Simpson in the semis. The final was a close fought one, with the Sun taking the opening leg through Upton. Newman levelled the score for the Cuckfield side, before Wyatt hit double eight to lift the Trebles Cup for the Rising Sun. Finally in a re-arranged league game at the Fountain, the Fountain A edged out their B side 5-4.

Horsham Riders Trials Club held their first event of the New Year on Sunday at Rome Woods near Capel. Forty nine riders signed on to compete in the event, and conditions were very slippery after weeks of bad weather. This time it was a new name who took the top spot on the podium - Tony Flegg on the white route. Former Montesa rider Eddie Charman, now having switched to a Beta, took the runner up spot by two marks from Sean Parsons. Sam Davidson had a great ride to win the blue route, having his first ride at this venue using the 4 stroke power of his Montesa to good advantage. Back on top on the yellow route was John Yardley after his fourth place at the last event. Local man Brian Barnes took runner up spot on recently purchased Beta. White Route

Delight for Hornets at high flying Kings Kingstonian
1-3
Horsham Horsham produced an inspired performance to send fourth placed Kingstonian crashing to defeat with a victory that was as emphatic as it was deserved. True, the Hornets goal lived a charmed life at times as the hosts threw everything at them late on - Bashiru Alimi hit the crossbar with 12 minutes remaining - but some committed defending, and inspired counterattacking, enabled Horsham to avenge their narrow defeat at Gorings Mead back in August. Led by the outstanding Anthony Storey, Horsham recovered from the shock of conceding an early goal to hit the Ks with a triple-whammy of goals inside a 10 minute spell to take control by the break. The stand-in skipper was involved in everything the Hornets did and fully merited his goal, the visitors' third, rounding off a superb free-flowing move but his energy and constant availability
to receive a team-mate's pass was a regular feature of this contest and made him the game's stand out performer. That this result was achieved without the suspended Michael Hector, Ben Andrews, Paul Kennett, Gary Charman and Ryan Woodford, and the 'flu-stricken Steve Davies, makes it even more impressive and says so much about the spirit among John Maggs' squad that has now seen them lose just one of their last nine games. The Kingsmeadow has always been a favourite stomping ground for the Hornets followers and they were in good number for this first outing of the new year. The hosts took an early lead when the Hornets failed to clear their lines convincingly and the ball was played out wide for Gray to cross first time and Traynor had his 16th goal of the season, powering a header into the net from 10 yards. Another free header, this time from the towering Tobi Jinadu, went straight at Zawadski and it was 18 minutes before Horsham fash-
ioned their first effort on goal when some good approach play involving Graham and Storey
ended with Pat Harding hitting a firm volley straight at Rob Tolfrey in the home goal. After a period of pressure, Joe Dolan's miscued clearance fell invitingly for Shane Graham who clipped the ball into the net from out on the far touchline to register his first goal in Horsham colours. It was another set-play that put the Hornets on their way to goal number two, on 38 minutes, when Anthony Storey's anticipation sent Billy Dunn racing clear down the left and, when his determined run was ended by a defender's challenge, the ball broke loose inside the six yard box and Pat Harding's poacher's instincts took over as he guided his shot inside the post. Two minutes later and the visitors were in Dreamland when Dunn led a superb break out of defence, finding Storey in the centre-circle. The ball was quickly moved on to Frankie Raymond whose instant back-heel threw the Ks defence into confusion and Storey calmly side-footed the ball past Tolfrey for a classic counter-attacking goal.
Jolyon shows he has speed Jolyon Palmer is a small step closer to his F1 dream after he enjoyed a strong showing during GP2's official tests at Abu Dhabi at the end of November. The 2010 FIA Formula Two Championship runner-up admitting he was pleased to register solid performances amongst a field comprising of some of the world's most talented young drivers and many GP2 championship regulars. Palmer, who had never experienced GP2 machinery before, tested for iSport on the first two days before joining Addax and ART for the third and fourth days of the test respectively. He acclimatised quickly from the outset, breaking into the top half of the field on the first day before finishing eighth fastest on the morning of day two - making him the second fastest rookie behind highly-regarded Mexican Esteban Gutierrez, who had in fact completed all the official GP2 tests before the 2010 season. Palmer continued to improve during the third day when he switched to Addax, finishing in tenth place on the timesheets just 0.4 sec off team-mate Marcus Ericsson - a race winner in GP2 this year - and within eight tenths of a second of the day's outright fastest time. Although Jolyon's final day with ART didn't afford him the opportunity to improve upon his impressive opening, he admits he was pleased with both his performances and his progress during the four day testing programme. "Overall it was pretty good," Palmer reflected. "I felt I gave a reasonable account of myself and it was a positive step towards GP2. “Every day I got quicker, and it was comforting to know that even as a rookie I could be amongst some of the most experienced and best drivers outside of Formula One. “I felt I was able to settle into the car fairly quickly, and the step-up in performance from F2 wasn't as big as I thought it would be - the carbon brakes were the biggest difference. It was also nice to keep the same team for the first two days which gave me a bit of consistency. "It was good to finish ahead of Formula Renault 3.5 and GP3 race winners as well, so overall I was pleased with my performance and hopefully I can use this as an opening and make the step up."
